Notes

As we were leaving the first World Cinema movie screening last Wednesday night - with a belly full of peach cobbler thanks to local chef Max - an announcement was made to drive slowly on the way home as there was a herd of livestock stampeding through the township. Locals chuckled and were heard to say, “Only in Eumundi!” On the early morning walk to yoga, the local mob of kangaroos bounded into view, a joey’s legs jangling from the pouch of a Jill. In the afternoon, young mums with snoozing babies in prams exited the bookshop holding parcels wrapped with ribbons and ambled past the regular bikies enjoying a beer outside the pub. It’s these juxtapositions that make Eumundi such a special and constantly entertaining place to live.

Business E U M U N D I ’ S S A L E YA R D A L I V E & K I C K I N G If you know the difference between Droughtmasters and Murray Greys, then chances are you’ll be at home amidst the big hats and dusty boots lining the sun-bleached posts of Eumundi’s Saleyard. It’s here that Mike Wheeler holds his fortnightly livestock auctions under the shade of mammoth Fig Trees on unsealed Hatfield Rd. Once a national institution to Australian graziers and slaughterhouses, auctions like the Eumundi Saleyard are increasingly becoming a thing of the past. This decline is not due to computer livestock auctions as you might think, (introduced to Aus. in 1982 they still only account for around 5% of all sales), but by the campaigning of animal welfare groups who wrote a welfare paper in late 2012 calling for the ban of country auctions by 2018. It was claimed that rural sale yards, which account for approximately 40% of all cattle sales in Northern Australia, cause cattle undue stress. In 2013 RSPCA scientific officer for farm animals Melina Tensen, told The Australian

newspaper; “Selling direct [to the meatworks] is a much better outcome for the animal than being auctioned through the saleyards,” adding, “The whole process of an extra yarding, trucking, stressful journey, time off water and feed in the yards and mixing with unfamiliar animals is an extra layer of stress that we think is unnecessary and not in their best interests.” For me, however, Eumundi’s cattle auction is a chance to take my youngest son Ted to experience a lively tradition that most rural Australians would have experienced as a social country highlight. My once white station wagon, amidst the army of empty stock trucks waiting for a successful bid to fill them, sticks out like an unbranded cow as we walk past the holding yards teaming with mustered Droughtmaster heifers, cull Charolais bulls, Hereford steers and heavy cows (sold for $751 to $866), and slaughter cattle (reaching between $50 to $100 per head). Heading to the main pen, Ted

and I are quickly entranced by the staccato voice of the well-seasoned auctioneer spruiking his latest lot. His is the only voice in this dusty world, where the only respite from the midday sun is the warm welcome under a hot tin roof of the two women selling cups of tea and instant coffee next to a jar of assorted Arnott’s biscuits. Theirs is the only other female presence, apart from mine, in this masculine world of weathered cattlemen. Perched as they are, notebooks in hand nodding to their counterparts as they keep an eagle eye on the silver grey, red, roan and white coated bulls, cows and weaned steers coming through the gates waiting to take them to a new home. What and where is your business? I run Be Fit Pilates, scheduling classes in both my fully equipped private studio at home, as well as in the Eumundi CWA Hall on Monday evenings. How long have you been in business in Eumundi? After teaching pilates for years in other studios, I’ve decided to work from home and focus on my personal clients – particularly in Eumundi. What made you choose Eumundi to base your business? I’m a Eumundi local and I enjoy the flexibility of working from home or close to home. What is the best thing about working here? I love connecting with our warm, friendly community and being a catalyst for them to be fit and live happy! What is the worst thing you’ve found about working here? I can’t think of a “bad” thing … it’s all good!

What’s in store for Eumundi rewards!

For abled bodied people, scaling a flight of steps provides no obstacle. Have you ever thought what challenges a flight of steps might pose if you had a disability or were wheelchair bound? For many of these people steps are not their only obstacle. However, there is an organisation that has removed these “steps” and works towards breaking down the barriers these people face. House with No Steps is an organisation that was founded in 1962 by Lionel Watts to help disabled people learn independence and empower them to integrate into society with self-esteem. Group homes, supported by House With No Steps, are located throughout suburbs and towns in both Queensland and New South Wales. Such facilities are even located in our local area in Doonan. House with No Steps caters for a range of disabilities from mild physical or intellectual disabilities needing minimal support, to those who need full intensive support. The employment of a great range of skilled professionals allows this wonderful organisation to break down the barriers for disabled people from teenagers to adults. People who work for House With No Steps include support workers, trainers, vocation

officers and managers. Any person with a disability can benefit from the personal centred approach provided by House With No Steps. This enables them to have their feelings and desires heard and acted upon. Games, education and even supported holidays, including overseas holidays, are among the range of activities the organisation provides its disabled clients. House with no Steps celebrates disabled people’s strengths and abilities - whether they are disabled or employees - and make sure their needs are met. This essential organisation is funded by subsidies, pensions and public donations. hwns.com.au.

C AT T L E S TA M P E D E T H R O U G H EUMUNDI 13 head of cattle took to the road last Wednesday night after escaping from the old slaughterhouse property on Eumundi Noosa Rd. Owner William Gray said he believes the herd were chased by dogs through the an electric fence. The spooked herd then made their way over the bridge, down past the strawberry farm, past the Bruce highway entrance and onto the West Eumundi Rd roundabout. He said the fence was really smashed up where they escaped and could have potentially been a very dangerous situation.

make a case for change. Winston Churchill once stated – “Democracy is the worst form of government except for all the rest” and we witnessed democracy in action last Saturday. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of the Noosa electorate for again placing their confidence in me to represent them for the next three years in the Queensland Parliament. The undeniable fact of the election result is that the voting public will not tolerate perceived arrogance and politicians who fail to consult and adequately

I congratulate the other candidates for putting their names forward and campaigning for their beliefs. It makes our State and community richer and stronger when we are able to engage in vigorous debate without rancour or threat. Once again, my sincere thanks. You have my assurance that I will continue to work as hard as I possibly can for our community.

L atest election res u lt Joe Shlegeris - Green’s candidate for Noosa The biggest problem with the recent election is that most voters still do not understand how Queensland’s Optional Preferential Voting (OPV) system works. Over the course of the campaign, hundreds of people asked me what would I do with their preferences. The answer, of course, is that your preferences are totally under your control. If you just vote 1 - for any candidate - that’s it. If your candidate doesn’t get a majority of the number 1 votes, your vote is “exhausted” and you don’t give any preference vote to anyone. If you choose to number more boxes, the only preferences your ballot can give are those which you specify. No candidate can give your preferences to anyone. Your vote(s) can only go to the

candidates you choose, in the order you choose. The great irony here in the Noosa electorate lies in the influence of the Palmer United Party (PUP). Most PUP voters wanted to reject the major parties as a top priority. Stupidly, however, PUP told its voters to “just vote 1,” and from the bits of the counting I observed, many of them did so. The LNP candidate got less than 50% of the number 1 votes. The PUP candidate came last, with 9%, so his number 1 votes were discarded and the number 2 votes from his ballots were allocated. Because many PUP voters stopped at 1, the LNP candidate got past 50% after PUP preferences despite getting very few preference votes from PUP supporters. Nice work, Clive.

My name is Pauline Tiberghien and I am 17 years old. I live in the north of France near Lille and Belgium. I am in Australia for one year as a Rotary International Youth Exchange Student. I’ve got two host clubs, Eumundi and Cooroy. I arrived on 29 July after a 29 hour flight. I was quite nervous and excited at the same time about my experience far away from my friends and family. But when I saw all the beautiful landscapes and the most lovely people I was reassured that I would have the most wonderful experience. I was really excited to meet new people, learn about the Australian culture, go to a new high school, speak another language, try to understand the slang, discover some new places, learn a new lifestyle, gain some new knowledge and new habits with each host family. Since I arrived, I’ve been doing a lot of different things. First, I go to St Teresa’s Catholic School which is a beautiful school. It’s very different to my French school. Everybody is so nice to me since I arrived. I wear a uniform which is very different for me, I can choose my subjects and I start at 8am and finish at 2.20pm which is very short for me. I never think about that since I’m here but now I can say, “I like going to school!” I have done a lot of travel with my host families. I have stayed with three host families and they are all very different but very nice! With my first family I had the opportunity to go to North Queensland to Port Douglas, Cairns, the Whitsundays and Cobble Gorge. That was a great trip and I saw some beautiful landscapes. I did some bushwalking, snorkelling … I also camped on Fraser Island. With my third host family, I went to Sydney. I was so excited because this is the city I have always wanted to visit! It was great to see the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and have dinner in the Sydney Tower. I spent some weekends and a Sunshine Safari with all the exchange students of my Rotary District 9600. We are nine exchange students from different countries all over the world, we are like a family. We did some

{ T H E G R E E N 18 February 2015

surfing, that was so much fun and a real Aussie sport! During the Sunshine Safari we did a number of activities and met a lot of Rotary clubs around the Sunshine Coast. I have done lots of different activities with my host families and friends including Australia Zoo, a picnic next to the water, jumping in waterfalls, going to the movie, visiting Brisbane, shopping, going to the beach, swimming in the pool, walking around Noosa National Park, standing up on a paddle board, preparing a Christmas dress up party, a helicopter tour, cooking some French food, doing activities with my Rotary clubs or just meeting to have a coffee. I have had real Aussie experiences. Indeed, I had a hot Christmas! In December, I was still thinking we were in August (summer in France). That was the most different experience since I came here. But it was a great and busy day. We had some nice food and good time with the family of my third host family. I can’t believe I’m half way through my exchange. Australia is just an amazing country with some wonderful people! I really want to thank my host Rotary Clubs and my host families, they are fantastic. I enjoy every day here and learn a lot! Exchange is not a year of your life, it’s a life in a year.

Community ARE BOUNDARIES CONFUSING? were the centres of commercial business, mostly primary industries like farming or treefelling and timber processing. Many things have changed in the meanwhile.

Joanne Wright, EDV President How strange that at the same time we all received our half-yearly rate notices from the Sunshine Coast Council we could go to the Christian Outreach Centre in Noosaville and cast a pre-poll vote for the State electorate of Noosa.

There is no restriction or limits on the population in a local government area (although there are within Divisions). Figures from the latest census show that the SCC had a total population of 306,909 in 2011. The EDV districts plus Weyba Downs had 6077 persons, or less than 2% of the council where we pay our rates.

This has been the subject of a number of queries –“why am I in the Seat of Noosa when I pay rates to the Sunshine Coast” and illustrates how boundary issues may be confusing. The most obvious thing is that rate notices are issued by the local council and State elections are run under the authority of a statutory body, the Queensland Electoral Commission. Electorate boundaries are not required to be council boundaries and are set using population statistics so that all electorates have roughly the same number of voters.

Based on the rapid increase in housing taking place in the southern parts of SCC, every year about 5,000 to 6,000 additional people are moving into housing south of us. So over time the SCC will become much bigger and we will become an ever smaller part of the total Council population. This is an important issue to consider when considering boundaries and one that an independent boundary commissioner would include in an unbiased evaluation of which is the most logical council for the EDV area to belong to – Sunshine Coast or Noosa.

Shire or council boundaries were created many, many years ago, some back in the century before last. They were based on river catchments or defining geographical features and included towns which at the time

W ho are S C A I ?

Vonnie Burton, Vice President SCAI

The Sunshine Coast Alliance Inc. (SCAI) were formed by long term residents and ratepayers that oppose any boundary change of our lands to become part of the Noosa Shire Council (NSC). We now have well over 150 members that live in and own property in the community. We have absolutely no faith in any of the surveys that the EDV group have carried out and are concerned the EDV Group have not been forthcoming with the results and methodology from their phone survey conducted late last year. Could this be because the results do not support their claims of a majority? The majority of the Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale areas are the catchments of the Upper North Maroochy River system. Our communities of the Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) are naturally aligned and have always supported our community through Council financial support, grants and

subsidies. SCC and its rate payers have funded substantial infrastructure and services and recent infrastructure upgrades for our community. If the EDV want this romantic notion to go to a vote, then it should be across the whole SCC Communities as they are the losing stakeholders in this situation! The EDV Group should also fund this referendum in this case and all promises that the EDV Group have made - such as “No Rate Rises” should have a NSC spokesperson endorse them. If the NSC take over the local Governance of our area, are we to witness the monies raised through Eumundi Market Parking be taken from our local community organisations and given to other Noosa organisations such as the NPA? Will the same happen to the marketeers at Eumundi as happened to the marketeers at Peregian Markets - 33% increase of stall fees? 10

Cr Greg Rogerson Division 10

On the Political Scene Politics in Queensland is never dull and what happened on 31 January at the State election confirmed that fact. Irrespective of which party forms government, the Mayor of the Sunshine Coast issued all candidates in our region with a list of the top 10 priorities for the Sunshine Coast – which included seeking a commitment that there would be no further changes to the boundaries of the Sunshine Coast Council. Scout Hall update: I know the tender for the Scout Hall lease is a hot topic in Eumundi. The tender is now closed and the evaluation process is underway. As with all tender processes, confidentiality is paramount and I cannot yet deliver any news. I look forward to this great community asset being well-used by our community, and I’ll let you know as soon as I can. Australia Day Sunshine Coast Council’s latest Citizenship Ceremony was held at Caloundra on Australia Day, and I would like to extend a warm welcome to the new citizens in Eumundi and the wider Division 10 area. Council also hosted the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards, where Eumundi’s very own Julie Templeton was recognised

I attended Eumundi’s Australia Day Awards where outstanding locals were recognised. I would like to give special mention to Beverly Hand, who received the Cultural Award, and to Vicky Blackall who was nominated for her contribution to Sustainability. Mike Blackall was instrumental in establishing the Kenilworth Visitor Information Centre and it’s great to see his dedication to the community clearly runs in the family. Parking on market days: I’m aware of the continual parking infringements on our market days and I am endeavouring to get to the bottom of this issue with council staff. If it turns out these tickets are not just, I will wholeheartedly support their recipients who object. However, if there have been legitimate parking offences I have no alternative but to back council’s parking officers. There’s often safety reasons why parking is not permitted in certain areas and it’s important we all abide by those restrictions. I hope to have an update soon.

Tara Peebles, Year 5, ESS Ignite English After 14 years of putting her imagination on canvas, Lindy Longhurst stops in Eumundi to share her creative thoughts and talent. She is determined to present her imagination to the people of the Sunshine Coast through the Eumundi Markets. A variety of mixed media, including acrylic paints, paint pens, ink, paper and fabrics are collaged into her amazing artworks. The combination of media gives added dimension and detail to her paintings. Many of her artworks have a connection to the Earth. Lindy is also inspired by dream imagery, symbolism and fairy tales. Hearing a word or seeing something that catches her eye can also inspire her to visualise an image for a painting. Lindy’s paintings flow onto one another and somehow connect. All of her ideas come from a sketch book that she carries around with her and any eye catching scenes she sees. She then converts these into her magical, stunning paintings. As a young person who was

interested in art, Lindy taught herself to create her paintings. She has done a design-based degree at University - Landscape Architecture. Also, she undertook electives in painting at the School of Arts in Canberra. Lindy was inspired by other creative people at the University. Surrounded by many different talented artists with lots of new ideas and inspiration, her creativity was reignited. Lindy brings whole worlds to life by believing that anything is possible and including magical symbolism. It was not until five years after finishing university, when Lindy was living and travelling overseas, that she started to draw and paint seriously. Lindy’s creations are sold online and she also sells at different markets around the local area and in Brisbane.

Local Doonan girl Danielle (right) will be making her way to Poland in September to take part in the Gap Medics program. She will spend two weeks shadowing medics in Warsaw gaining invaluable pre-health education. Danielle shared, “I am really interested in a career in the medical industry, particularly in family medicine as I enjoy working with people.” “Taking part in the Gap Medics program in Poland will give me knowledge about the medical field before I start university, as well as give me an understanding of global health development which will help me in my studies and ultimately

LUNCHBOX LOVE The earth is alive from the beautiful summer rain and the kids are back at school for a fresh year! With each weekday morning comes the task of packing the lunchboxes with something to fill their tummies and keep their bodies and minds healthy. I know many parents enjoy the break from making lunches over the holidays but now we are back in business and it is time to chop, slice and grate again! Personally, I find my kids eat much better when they go to school as I can plan and provide a balanced diet for them. During the relaxation of holidays, it is hard to keep track of what they are eating because we tend to eat out or they help themselves to all sorts of things in the fridge! Then there’s the consumption of sweets over Christmas … but that’s another story all together!

Siona Howard encouraging them to make their own lunches also. They are so capable and enjoy the responsibility. Having fresh herbs and produce in the garden, cookie cutter shapes and cookbook recipes all help to spark their creativity - and mine! We are so very privileged to live in a country where not only do our children have the option of free education, but we also have the means and the opportunity to feed them well. Being able to make my children lunch each day is a gift. It is not a dreaded chore, it is just another thing I can do for my kids to show how much I value them.

My culinary imagination could be better so I absolutely LOVE any inspiration for healthy and yummy food choices. I have learnt to ask the children what they would like and I am

Health LOVE IS …

Jane Welsh tune into that quietness, we can feel it is always there.

I grew up in the ‘70s when mums mostly stayed at home and baked and we heard many stories of princesses waiting to be swept off their feet by their true love and live “happily ever after”.

Just like the stars are still above us by day, but we can’t see them, our love is always there, buzzing gently within. We can make it grow by tuning into it more, by giving it time and space and acknowledging it.

We were taught to look for love outside and to compete with others to find it. Loving ourselves was thought to be vain or egotistical and was discouraged. Valentine’s Day was peak expectation day of this romantic love and often left me feeling like I had failed, or if I had a “valentine”, he had not lived up to Prince Charming standards. Love hearts and red roses were symbols of this expectation that seemed hard to live up to. Nowadays “love” means much more to me than the romantic kind. I feel it within me, during times of meditation, or loving and caring for my family, in appreciating the beauty and

Practitioners for happiness

wonder of nature, or close connections with friends. Sometimes just “being”. Our love for other people may ebb and flow, but we all have this quiet gentle feeling of love within us.

I choose now to see Valentine’s day as a day to celebrate all kinds of love, love for self (where all love begins), love for precious family and friends, love for this gorgeous place we live in, and express appreciation for all the love that is around and within.

If we can just distract our attention away from the dramatic shouty ego voice and

If we can do this more, I’m sure our wonderful world will appreciate it right back.

Health S O A P B A R R E - B AT C H I N G Did you know it is worth your while to save all those pesky left over soap bars that have become too small to use? You can actually do something with them and it is called re-batching or re-milling. It is a lot of fun and a great activity to do with kids You’ll need: • Roughly 500gm of left over soap bits finely grated.

spice of your choice or 2 tablespoons of powdered milk or dried flowers. • 1 tablespoon of moisturising oil. • A soap mould: an empty used 500gm milk carton is good, silicone muffin moulds are good as well.

• Crockpot or a double boiler; a smaller pan that fits into a larger pan that is filled with simmering water.

The process goes as follows: Turn on the stove until the water in the bottom pot is simmering or have the crockpot on high, pop the grated soap in the pot then add the liquid, either water or milk, and warm the mix until the soap turns transparent and has mixed with the liquid (looks like it has melted and has the consistency of thick oatmeal porridge). Now is the time to add

your extras. Gently stir through, ideally with the rounded end of a stainless steel knife. Once you’re ready to pop the soap into the moulds you’ll need to work quickly as the mix will harden fast, also take care as the soap is very hot and can burn. Let it harden overnight, remove from the mould, trim and cut to size. willowsnaturalproducts.com

• Max ½ cup of either water, goats milk or coconut milk. • Up to 2 teaspoons of essential oil. • Extras like foodcolouring, honey, grated almond, sprinkling of cinnamon or

Tall tales and true Max Porter

Photos thanks to Leanne Staff

For the Eumundi World Cinema’s first film for the year we took a visit to the deep south with O Brother, Where Art Thou? and served a supper picnic plate of vittles – Jumpin’ John’s Black Eyed Beans and Buttermilk Sweet Potato. The beans recipe appears as early as the 1840s, attributed to an old southern guy called John who had one leg. He made this dish as a street hawker not dissimilar to ours! Black Eyed Beans are eaten traditionally on New Year’s Day with a coin hidden in the dish - whoever scooped out the coin received good fortune in the coming year. Rice is usually added but we have omitted it. Happy trails! nativesunfood.com. Jumpin John’s Black Eyed Beans Serves 10

• 3 whole sprigs of garden thyme

celery and stir for another 5 mins.

• 3 tbs honey

• 500 gms black eyed beans, soaked in plenty of water with 1 tbs bi-carb of soda

• 1 tbs crushed black pepper

Now add 1 litre of water, tomatoes, chillies, tarragon, thyme and bring to a simmer.

• Sea salt & freshly ground black pepper

When carrots are tender add black eyed beans.

Preheat oven to 210°C.

• 150 mls apple cider vinegar • Sea salt

• 100 mls olive oil

Method:

• A knob of butter

Drain beans and add to large pot and cover with water.

• 2 rashers of bacon - rind removed & chopped • 2 medium brown onions chopped in large dice • 3 medium carrots diced • 3 sticks of celery diced • 6 cloves of garlic chopped • 3 large ripe tomatoes roughly chopped • 2 green chillies chopped • 100 gms sliced jalapeños chillies in vinegar • 2 tbs dried tarragon leaves

Note: Don’t add any salt at this stage as this will prevent a creamy texture - add in the last five mins of cooking. Bring to the boil and simmer until tender - approx 20 mins. Drain, cool and put to side. Heat a large pot and add olive oil, then butter. Add bacon and brown slightly. Add onions and soften for 5 mins. Then add garlic, carrots and 18

Season with black pepper, sea salt and the vinegar. Note: there should be about 3cm of broth covering the contents of your pot - if not add some more, check seasoning, stir and bring back to a simmer.

• 100 mls extra virgin olive oil

Method: Put sweet potatoes on a tray and into the oven. Bake until roasted and you can easily slice a knife through them. Remove sweet potatoes and cool for 20 mins.

Lastly, turn off stove, put lid on pot and rest for 30mins before serving.

Peel off skin and place into a pot.

Smashed Sweet Potato with Buttermilk Serves 10

Mash roughly and gradually stir in buttermilk.

• 3 large sweet potatoes

Note: You may not need all of it - the texture shouldn’t be sloppy.

• 500 mls cultured buttermilk • 150 mls apple cider vinegar

Exotic weed: Chinese Celtis

The recent Lake MacDonald summer garden walk in Cooroy was guided by botanist and newly appointed Chair of Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends Dr Seonaid Melville. The group enjoyed exploring the eight magnificent acres of tropical and sub-tropical plants and trees.

Chinese Celtis (Celtis sinensis) is a class three declared plant, meaning that it cannot be bought or sold. It is an escaped garden plant. It is a large, fast growing tree that is common along watercourses, in bushland and in gardens. Birds love eating the numerous, colourful fruits and therefore spread the seed everywhere. It secretly germinates in your garden, lurking there amongst the other plants. Before you know it, it has become a tree and you don’t even notice it. Or you might think “I wonder what tree that is? Hmm I think I’ll just leave it there”. In autumn its leaves turn yellow then fall. This is when it can be seen everywhere, especially along North Maroochy River. It is currently fruiting. The big tree that fell down next to the Servo was a Chinese Celtis. Poor tree you may think, but it is for the best that it is now gone (and that no one was hurt!). There are many of these trees around, and we may not be able to get rid of them all, especially the massive ones. But if you see this one in your yard as a seedling, pull it out now, before it turns into a large tree. If you are unsure feel free to ask Council or the Eumundi Bushcare Group. I hope that together we can reduce weeds and encourage natives to make the green areas of Eumundi

Amber Grimley

better for everyone. The Eumundi Bushcare Group has copies of Sunshine Coast Councils “Take Another Look – Our Locals are Beauties” booklets. These booklets are wonderful, informative and a must for you if you are into native plants. Half the booklet has some of our lovely local natives and the other half has local weeds, including the Chinese Celtis. If you join the Eumundi Bushcare Group you can have a copy of this booklet. The next Eumundi Bushcare Group Meeting will be held on Sunday March 8 at 3pm at Eumundi’s Sunken Garden, top of Pacey Street. Please come along and join our group.

Dr Melville, when pointing out the Rainbow Shower Cassia tree (pictured) that is currently flowering, recollected, “last year when we posted photographs of this beautiful flowering Cassia we had enquiries from afar as to how they could obtain a seedling.”

T he next scheduled walk will be in autumn on Sunday 24 May.

Outdoors N ews from the W ildlife C entre Blue-tongued lizards Gill Brownhill at the Eumundi Wildlife centre has heard the patter of little happy feet (no not penguins) since mid-January when two of the mother Blue-tongue Lizards (Tiliqua scincoides) gave birth to a total of 34 babies at the Wildlife Centre. These lizards (skinks really) give birth to live young and between 12 – 20 babies are born per mother. Soon after birth, Gill removed the youngsters from the mothers to the safety of a large glass tank where they will spend several months gaining some size before their release. They will be fed a well-balanced diet including mealworms and crickets. Usually the staff from the Centre are only too happy to take a few home to their gardens for a safe release. They will be supplied with some mealworms and a saucer of clean water until they adjust to their new lives. Please remember that it is illegal to keep any Australian lizard without a permit.

The main predator of young blue-tongues are kookaburras. The rise in kookaburra numbers is mostly due to us humans feeding kookas, thus keeping their numbers to a higher than usual level. The other predators of these lizards are dogs. Gill treats many blue-tongues every year following dog attacks and indeed her mother lizards are dog attack survivors. Often many are too maimed to survive. Lawn mowers are another nasty hazard for lizards of all sizes. Similar to bluetongue lizards are pink-tongue lizards, these are a little smaller and are keenly sought after by cats.

Another recent addition is the water garden with its kaleidoscope of tropical blooms. Gourmet lunches and cakes available from 10am-4.30pm.

letters PA R K I N G P R O B L E M I see we had the usual parking problem at Eumundi School on polling day due to it being a market day. Why the polling booth is at the school is beyond me, why can’t it be at the School of Arts where the parking would be better or even better still the Eumundi Showgrounds. Doug Vowell, Eumundi.

DUM PIN G ROO STE RS To the person dumping roosters on Black Stump Road, you’re not being kind or helping them, you’re weak for passing your problem on to other s and leaving them to suffer and starve. So far you have dumped six roosters, three of which have met an end via various ways - including dogs. It’s obviously someone who has a lot of chickens and when a baby rooster comes along, dumps it instead of dealing with it.

These roosters have become a nuisance in our area, besides the constant noise, they bully, attack and chase native birds away from bird feeders we have set up. If you are seen you will be repor ted. Council will not do anything unles s we trap them. I am too busy to do your dirty work so they are left to hopefully meet a quick end under a tyre or dogs. Andrew Cunningham, Eumundi.
