T his issue ...

Here in the Hinterland we saw a fare bit of rain, some flooding, but overall we got off pretty easily and the water was gone again quickly. And it was, if I’m truthful, a wonderful reprieve from a long, hot, humid summer. It’s beautiful to see how Mother Nature can transform our hinterland: roads become rivers, a hill an island, a ditch becomes a stream, a cliff a waterfall. Colours are vibrant, shadows deeper, edges smudged. This rainy weather also signalled a change of season. Now Autumn’s back we can return to the vegie patch and work on projects out in the tin shed again… I actually think it’s the best season of the year on the Coast - still hot enough for an ocean swim and cool enough to sleep without sweating.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT A rt of F lamenco

What and where is your business? I am a professional flamenco artist who runs Arte Flamenco Dance School on the Sunshine Coast. I recently started up classes on a Thursday night at the beautiful Eumundi School of Arts. What made you choose Eumundi to base your business? I have students from different parts of the coast so I was looking for a central location for them that was suitable, not far off the Bruce Hwy. The Eumundi School of Arts is a fantastic hall so it seemed like a perfect choice. Flamenco is a vibrant art form with a huge, artistic personality and I felt that it matched Eumundi perfectly! What is the best thing about working here? The town, the people… The feeling you get that this community willingly embraces all different sorts of artistic expression with an open and warm heart. I love that! What would you like to see change in our business district? I think that the community is very fortunate to have a wonderful, historic School of Arts hall, with a caring committee doing its best to preserve it. I feel that anything the business community can do to further support it in a financial way will be of benefit to everyone. ArteFlamenco 0466 657 607

At the recent Eumundi Chamber Breakfast meeting at the Fig Tree Café, key speakers were Experience Eumundi GM Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher, e-Learn Australia’s Chris Sutton, Designer Matt Blak and Business Advocate Ted O’Brien. Anthony informed local business owners that the restaging of the Australian Body Art Festival this May was hoping to, over time, emulate the success of a similar type of event held annually in New Zealand, World of Wearable Art. This NZ event has a broad appeal to consumers as well as artists and now attracts 55,000 attendees each year. As part of the broadening of appeal he also announced new programs for this year including skate and surfboard art and also a plan to transform the School of Arts into an “Andy Warhol Factory” style of arts happening for the opening night. Ted O’Brien from Ted O’Brien & Associates shared his new not-for-profit venture aimed at addressing high

youth unemployment in the Sunshine Coast by encouraging young locals to become entrepreneurs by participating in his new program called the GI (Generation Innovation) Challenge. He said he hoped the community would get behind this project of empowering young people with the confidence and skills they need to become entrepreneurs, achieving their own business goals and creating opportunities for themselves and others, without having to leave the region OEM Board Chair and local training entrepreneur Chris Sutton delivered an interesting insight into her sophisticated e-learning training programs. eLearn Australia began as a single person business, but became eLearnAustralia.com.au Pty Ltd in 2008. While the company itself is small, its ability to meet the needs of large and complex organizations is unsurpassed. Well known web and graphic designer Matt Blak showed members a sneak preview of the new Eumundi Chamber of Commerce interactive website and also the upcoming fourth edition of the popular seven days in Eumundi tourist brochure. Community WELLINGTON THANKS THE COMMUNITY Almost a month has passed since the recent election and I would like to thank you, the people of Nicklin, for your support and assure you that my door is always open and I will continue to represent you to the best of my ability. For the second time in my political life I was to hold the balance of power, first in 1998 and now in 2015. I met with the new LNP Leader Lawrence Springborg who I have known for many years and respect and I told him that before the election I made it very clear that I would not support a Newman, Seeney, Bleijie, Nicholls team. Consequently I gave my support to Labor Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk to form

N ews from the W ildlife C entre

Government. That support is conditional in that there is no gross fraud or illegal activities and that I retain the right to vote on every Bill in the way I believe is right for my electorate and Queensland. I am looking forward to taking my seat in Parliament and I am confident that this new Government will provide the stability and good governance that was lacking in the last. With your support I was able to increase my majority to 65% and I am looking forward to the next three years in Parliament.

Independent MP Peter Wellington was nominated by Queensland’s new Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk last Friday 27 February as the new Labor government’s nominee for Speaker. A humbled Mr Wellington said his first order in the new role would be to reverse the ban on cameras in the people’s house introduced by the LNP government. “Parliament should be accessible to all media,” Mr Wellington said. Parliament will resume on 24 March.

Cr Stephen Robinson Division 9

Councillor Greg Rogerson and I are very pleased to be able to progress the Gridley St access project that will make life easier for the volunteers at the Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre. This access required very careful planning and design because it sits alongside significant memorial trees that needed to be safeguarded. I’m pleased to say that the design for this access is complete and construction is scheduled to start in early April. Maximising the markets It was great to catch up with Eumundi Markets General Manager Daniel West recently for a chat about his aspirations in working with key stakeholders

to revitalise the markets and its offerings for locals and visitors. I was really impressed by Daniel’s enthusiasm and his ideas and I think he can help make the Eumundi Markets experience an even better one in the future. Let’s talk The poor weather we had during the most recent community meet and greet in Eumundi didn’t deter locals from turning out in good numbers to chat and ask questions about a range of topical issues. The next meet and greet will be held on Wed 22 April, 10am - 12pm, Lonergan’s Lane. I look forward to seeing you there!

WORK STARTS ON RDA’S 2ND ARENA The steel for the RDA’s enclosed arena arrived at the North Arm sight last Thursday and is expected to be completed in 6 weeks – weather permitting. The indoor space will allow the club to run programs for the disabled, which will include horse and cart riding, as well as children’s riding classes. The new outdoor arena was also recently completed.

14 year-old Swanky (pictured), along with his partner Swanny, had played an important part at the Centre rearing orphaned cygnets. They were also very dear companions to me. Both birds were unable to fly. I’m sure everybody has been told about keeping their cats indoors after dark, but this also applies to dogs. At the Wildlife Centre we see as many dog attack victims as we do cat. So many people move to the country so they can have a big dog. Then it is just allowed to run about without many owners aware of what their dog is up to. Unfortunately, when your lovely, gentle pooch chums up with the neighbours lovely, gentle pooch, they can behave very differently and fall into a game of “Who can chase the most animals.” Before you know it, something gets killed. Having just spent two days in Nambour Hospital, I excitedly went up to feed my two permanent care black swans and five ducks. Both swans, Swanky and Swanny, were dead and three of the ducks missing. My older swan had been here

with me for the last 14 years. Their paddock has a 7ft high, netted fence. The next day [after the attack] I read in the Eumundi Green [Issue 213] that the old Slaughter Yard across the road from us [Eumundi Noosa Rd], had had the same problem the previous night. Please keep your dogs and cats contained on YOUR property. This incident happened on Tuesday 10 February. The Police have now been informed and if anyone can offer any information, please phone the Eumundi Police Station on 5442 8222 during office hours.

The long list for the Stella Prize, named after iconic Australian author, Stella Maria ‘Miles’ Franklin, has just been announced. Though it was only established in 2013, the prize and has already provided me with two great books; the 2013 and 2014 winners, Carrie Tiffany’s Mateship with Birds and The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka by Clare Wright, were my favourite books of those years. I’m looking forward to what 2015 reveals : the short list- due to come out on 12 March and, of course, the winner to be announced on 21 April. Last year’s winner, The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka is both a remarkable achievement for Clare Wright and an invaluable contribution to Australian history. Ten years of research and writing have produced a work the Stella judges called a “rare combination of true scholarship with a warmly engaging narrative voice”. By adding women (and other groups) to the story, The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka, completes the history of one of the foundation events and legends in Australian history:

the Eureka Stockade, sometimes called the birth place of Australian democracy. It is a social as well as political history, beginning well before the events of the stockade itself, revealing the circumstances of women and men in the countries they left and the effects of the transition to the new country. Fascinating reading. By including women’s roles and influence in these events, a much more complex, interesting and accurate history emerges. (An example is the one woman who died in the stockade and was overlooked until this book.) The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka builds on and expands existing versions of events rather than contradict them. It completes the picture. As Wright says, “These women were central to the movement and were agents of change, not just helpmates watching from the boundaries.… The story is one of Australia’s foundation legends, but until now it has been told as though only half the participants were there.” Why tell only half the story?

Arts C R E AT I V E S PA C E Where is your hinterland studio and how long have you been painting there? We’re in Doonan. We bought the property 10 years ago and fell in love with the sweeping views of the Coast - and the space. We have a few acres and back onto our own mini rain forest. We have spent 10 years planting it out and creating new gardens. It’s our little sanctuary. What was your previous career? What made you take the leap to Artist? I studied graphic design and photography once I finished school. I also did a contemporary floristry course and was a florist for some time. I have always been creative and art has always been my first passion. Where do you find your inspiration? I am a very visual person so inspiration is everywhere. I love home magazines to keep up to date with trends and find much inspiration on Pinterest and Instagram. I collect all my home magazines. My visual indulgence. Why do you think your artwork is so incredibly popular? I have been painting professionally for

Amanda Brooks, artist 20 years and am always evolving and changing. I like to be diverse and offer many different genres, although my painting style remains distinct, that’s how I would like to keep it. I have a huge following on my Facebook page (about 14,000) and it definitely helps spread the word about my work. I’m also very open to commissions. People love having their own special piece. I get wonderful feedback that my art makes people happy. What more could I ask for! Is it hard to juggle a young family and working from home? Yes it was a struggle for many years with my husband working away overseas, but last year we made the decision to form a partnership: my husband resigned from his job overseas and now we work together as a team. I do the painting and liaise with clients, while he takes care of all the publishing (we do our own limited edition prints) packaging, freight and administration. We make a great team and it allows me many more hours each day to concentrate on fulfilling

P eace is my dr u g Local songstress Katie Noonan and her young family had the chance to relax and enjoy living in the Eumundi hinterland this Summer – the first big chunk of time out in about six years. Katie is constantly traveling and touring and is prolific at making music - as natural to her and husband Zac as breathing. She has released 12 albums and been involved in numerous creative projects and this album she’s currently working on evolved in part from her time unwinding this summer amongst the hinterland trees and on Straddie – her magical place. Her new single Peace is my Drug was also inspired by the poetry and drawings of Michael Leunig. Katie calls Leunig a “true master of simplicity” and has found him a constant source of inspiration. Looking over her body of work Katie has an amazing affinity with many genres, most recently known for her soothing, elegant melodies. This new album sees Katie return to her first love and the music style that brought her recognition with her

former bands George and The Captains. On this new project, Katie’s returning to playing with a band – and she’s very excited! “My first love is sitting in a room with drums and paddles - there’s a bigger palette in the electric world,” she said. This new music, which Katie said has been “simmering on the sidelines” over the last couple of years, is going to be electric with swirls of orchestral. “It’ll still have some quiet, gentle moments but also more electric - this new album is feeling amazing!” Katie shared. She feels she is making some of her best work – and most personal yet. Katie experimented with crowd funding for this latest CD and was overwhelmed by people’s support and quick response. She’ll be heading into the 11

studio with a bunch of “creative superstars” to record the Peace is my Drug CD over the Easter holidays so her boys can tag along. Katie said her kids have grown up with their parents and friends constantly making music and are used to watching them mixing in the studio. Katie said she actually feels she’s making better records now she’s older and a parent - time is now a commodity not to be wasted – and what would’ve once taken months to perfect can now be achieved in one or two takes. “It’s also easier as a solo artist to control parameters.” she explained. Katie will be playing locally this March at the Sol Bar in Maroochydore and then taking the new CD on tour later in the year. Katie shared that as much as she loves playing with talented musicians in so many amazing parts of the world, “It’s always so great coming home to such a beautiful part of the world.” For more information about Katie Noonan’s crowdfunding check out pledgemusic.com/ projects/katienoonan.

It was Sunshine Coast blues band HoneyBird’s love of Rock Operas that inspired their desire to perform a soundtrack to the expressionist classic silent film, Metropolis. The band’s lead singer Ilsa WynneHoelscher explained that this dark, political romance shared similar themes with their recent album A Golden Thread. “It’s a film that questions morals in society, power, change, love and hatred, and this excited us, so we re-imagined the film’s meaning in today’s world and wrote new songs,” she said. Ilsa along with other Honeybird members Andy Kidd, Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher and Paul Kusy, also composed music for local musician Matisse Willement’s string quartet Adiamus to perform as part of their rock opera ensemble. When asked why the band had chosen Eumundi’s School of Arts, Ilsa shared, “As local artists we’re all about supporting the live local music and arts culture scene.” She also explained that at the

recent Festival of Small Halls performance the band realised what a wonderful space it is for live music. First screened in 1927 and considered the mother of science fiction film, Metropolis is set in a futuristic dystopia. Health YOUR PET IN THE WET – HEARTWORM Cyclone Marcia has left behind a lot of water and we should not forget to look after our pets in the aftermath of such an event. Unfortunately, the standing water means lots of nuisance flies and mosquitoes which can spread a number of diseases. One very preventable and potentially deadly disease is heartworm disease that both dogs and cats can contract from infected mosquitoes. If an infected mosquito bites your pet, it can inject a larval stage of the worm under the skin. This larval stage matures for 5 to 6 months and then becomes an adult worm and migrates through the organs to the heart and lungs. The adult worms then breed to produce microfilaria (baby heart worm) in the bloodstream which are then drawn up by a mosquito when it feeds on the pet. And so the cycle begins again.

Signs that your dog has heartworm include loss of stamina, coughing and lethargy which can progress to difficulty in breathing, a distended abdomen and weight loss. A cat may not show obvious signs, except a cough and a little lethargy. The disease is fatal if not treated, but completely preventable. In the dog, a blood test can diagnose heartworm, however cats are more difficult to diagnose and sometimes require an ultrasound. Treatment includes medications for dogs, but in cats treatment is very difficult as the medications can have serious side effects. Thankfully, preventing heartworm disease is easy in dogs and cats. There are many monthly treatments to prevent the disease in either tablet form or top-spot which also incorporate other forms of

Dawn Herd, Vet

parasite protection for fleas and worms. There is also an annual injection to prevent heartworm in the dog which is administered by your veterinarian and removes the risk of forgetting your monthly dosing. Puppies and kittens should begin heartworm prevention from 3 months of age. It is important that you know that an older pet does not have heartworm before you start any preventatives, therefore, a visit to your veterinarian would be the safest first step. walkaboutvet.com

Everybody loves beans!

Discover how your garden can become your ultimate wellness tool.

Liesl Doery

It’s often how we start the day that determines how the rest of the day rolls out. If we start tired, rushed and flustered, that’s how the day seems to keep on rolling. If we start the day well rested, steady and positive then things seem to just flow... Well that’s how it seems to go in our household. One of the things that I find helps to ground me and my family is starting the day with a good, full belly. My son loves beans and although I often fall prey to buying ready made baked beans because my son loves them, I love to make them from scratch. You know what goes in to them, less of the “sugar” hit you get out of tinned baked beans and you get to add lots more fresh herbs and locally grown produce. It might take a little persuasion to try the “new” beans and it may not always work but it doesn’t mean that we stop trying. If you make a big batch, then you can freeze them in portion sizes so you don’t need to make them from scratch every time, but have them all ready to go when you feel like a little grounding is needed. They can be had as a side to scrambled, fried or poached eggs, as a baked dish with an egg and cheese on top, or even as a side for an evening meal, perfect for sausages or lamb cutlets for those who love meat. Baked beans good for the heart Baked beans make you fart The more you fart The better you feel Baked beans for every meal :-)

Let’s talk about your Eumundi Green...

L i v ing B ackyard

For more than 7 years, Eumundi has had a voice that focuses entirely on our local area. Unlike other publications, Green readers feel a great sense of ownership and belonging. They keep back issues Free of the magazine for reference, are more likely to read it from cover to cover, offer it to visitors and share the magazine with friends and family out of town. Our community magazine has a print run of 4,350 that is hand delivered every fortnight. The professional quality of The Green is created by a small, passionate team, both paid and volunteer, who work tirelessly to create a new issue that surprises and delights - every two weeks... This year we will upscale our investment and work collaboratively with the Foundation to achieve a sculptural statement that will be a large entrance statement and welcoming sculpture that captures “The Essence of Eumundi” to be installed on the major roundabout to Eumundi township (opposite the strawberry farm). Moreover, Sunshine Coast Council will be recognising Eumundi Public Art’s 10 Year Plan, which will recognize Eumundi as an arts hub, highlighting the three pillars at the essence of Eumundi – arts and culture, environment and heritage. eumundisculptureprize.com

Tractor? Permanent? Timber? Metal? I spent many hours researching designs when I decided to build my first chicken coop. After trial and error I ended up with a cyclone proof Queenslander, with a ginormous aviary. Little did I know that we would move two years later and that the 2 tonne beauty was going nowhere unless I hired a crane! Here are some of my top chicken coop tips: 1. Council Regulations - There are rules about distances from boundaries, size, number of chickens and maintaining hygiene. Allow enough room in the daytime run and a minimum of 30cm per chook on the perch. Enough space isn’t always a happy space, so go larger if you can.

Eumundi Chamber of Commerce Inc.

Eumundi & District Historical Association Inc. Serv

ty ing the Communi

4. In a coop you will need: a perch (square approx. 5cm wide), a nesting box (1:4 chooks), ventilation (ventilate at the top with mesh to avoid draughts), deep litter (min. 10cm) to absorb smells, easy access for cleaning/egg collection, insulation and predatorproofing (snake, fox, etc.). 5. Use aviary mesh for chicken runs. It’s more expensive but it will protect your girls. If you are running a coop on the ground, then place a sheet of flat welded mesh (max. squares of 10cmx10cm) underneath, but protrude outwards on all edges at least 30cm (stops foxes digging under). If you have any questions Kirstie is happy for you to email her sunshinecoast@citychicks.com.au.

nature news

Working closely with Councillors Greg Rogerson and Steve Robinson and with the generous support of EDCA and some additional contribution from ECCO, we are looking at integrating a “Jungle Jim” rickety bridge between the two large figs in the Dick Caplick Park playground - as it undergoes a full restoration in coming months. We are excited about this fantastic play element for older kids in our new playground.

the

3. Do not trust the specifications on the internet when it comes to the number of chickens you can keep in a coop. I bought one on this basis and it is now a home for two guinea pigs instead of 6 chickens! Many coops will need to be painted with exterior paint; otherwise they don’t last more than a year.

2. Do you want the chooks to mow and fertilise your lawn (a tractor) or do you want a permanent coop? If permanent, then you want it to face north/north- east and the run to have shady areas in summer.

Playtime for our bigger kids.

Outdoors S earch for an I conic F rog The heavy recent rain has triggered the frog population into action. Several species are calling from dams, ditches, wetlands, ponds and riparian bushland. This warm, wet weather is ideal for frogs to start moving and to go into breeding mode. But after two relatively dry summers with few frogs evident, it was opportune for both Mary River and Maroochy River Catchment authorities to activate their surveying and monitoring programmes, carried out by qualified field officers with the assistance of eager volunteers. We have taken part in a number of night-time surveys. These surveys have two phases: the first involves finding frogs and suitable or threatened habitat for possible further study later, the second involves counting and identifying frogs within predetermined areas usually marked out in transects of about 10 square metres. This process is carried out over a number of searches maybe days or weeks apart to cover a range of weather conditions. Obviously searches during and

Kon Hepers

after rain yield more results. For each transect all observed frogs (even Cane Toads) are recorded, often photographed and measured; if possible sex is determined and mature/ juvenile status is assessed. Factors of water quality such as pH, turbidity, and oxygen content are also measured and recoded. Of course after a severe flood event the picture may change completely. But why conduct frog surveys at all? It is well known that frogs are indicators of environmental conditions such as degraded land and polluted waterways. Their absence from known suitable habitat can be a sign that something is amiss. So when a major project such as the Bruce Highway upgrade at Cooroy is planned and carried out, part of the Environmental Impact Study is to monitor the indicator frog species particularly downstream. Would a project of that magnitude be held up because of the presence of “a few frogs”? Not likely! But small changes such as provision of frog tunnels might be made and a “catch

Be Fit Pilates

and relocate” program considered. Certain species are highly sensitive to habitat loss and disruption, none more so than our target species – the iconic Giant Barred Frog (Mixophyes iteratus), a large frog found in the riparian forests along flowing waterways. This species can be distinguished from the more common closely related Great Barred Frog (Mixophyes fasciolatus) by the pointier nose and large golden iris. The calls are also different. One technique for finding frogs is by their calls. On a recent survey we were amused when neither species responded to a professional recording of their calls but both replied immediately to our own poor effort at mimicking one of their calls. Barred Frogs do not lay their eggs in water but deposit them on stream banks in a position where heavy rain and/ or flooding will wash them into the stream. The “barred” part of the name comes from the bar markings on the hind legs, evident in all five species in this genus.

Onsite G Consult arden availab ations you pla le to help n an a sustaind create ab garden. le

Miteratus is found in wet forests of the East Coast from about the top of the Cooloola Coast to Mid-north Coast of NSW. Sadly, The Giant Barred Frog has also been affected by the chytrid fungus which world-wide has depleted frog populations and eliminated entire species. Our Giant Barred Frog is now classed as endangered. However recent surveys have found that in some severely reduced populations a few individual frogs seemed unaffected and this could be a sign of recovery of the species from the edge. This information is of scientific value and might be a clue to a possible management of this serious condition which has already wiped out several native species.

The Official Opening will be in late May. See photos of its progression on our website: eumundihistoricalassn.org

In 2007 the then Queensland Minister for Natural Resources and Water, Craig Wallace, announced that a request had been received to name a hill in Doonan as Mitchell Hill. In a Media Release Mr Wallace said the department had been approached by a local resident to officially name the geographical feature Mitchell Hill after two local farmers who served in the First World War. “Mitchell Hill rises steeply from its base at the Noosa Valley Golf Club on Wust Rd to its peak on Sunrise Road, approximately 145 metres above sea level,” Mr Wallace said. “The name ‘Mitchell Hill’ has apparently been used by the local community for generations. Local residents say the feature was named after Harold and Allan Mitchell, brothers who once owned and farmed all of the property from what is now Noosa Valley Golf Club, west to Sunrise Rd,” Mr Wallace said.

A bit of research by staff and volunteers at Discover Eumundi has uncovered some of the interesting story behind the two brothers. According to local Bryan Cooper, “obviously the request was approved because a year or so later and without any fanfare or local celebration, a sign appeared on Wust Rd, Doonan designating Mitchell Hill.” Allan Archibald Mitchell, Service Number 125, born near the NSW town of Murrumburrah was a farmer and enlisted at Lismore 21 September 1914, aged 26. He served in the Middle East with the 5th Light Horse and was at Gallipoli after 25 April. When they arrived they were deployed without their horses to reinforce the infantry as the terrain was considered unsuitable for mounted operations. They left the peninsula on 20 December 1915.

Harold Lawson Mitchell, Service Number 2186a also a farmer was born in Mossvale NSW and enlisted at Lismore 18 October 1915, aged 24. He served in the Middle East with the 4th camel Regiment and also the 5th Light Horse. Hospitalised in Suez with mumps in 5 May 1916 he later had bouts of malaria and returned to Australia 3 August 1919. It appears that they moved to the Eumundi district after the War and their names are listed at Eumundi as farmers, on the Commonwealth Electoral Roll for 1925. At Discover Eumundi there are a number of photos of the property they farmed and one of Harry and Mollie Bowden being married at St Ita’s Roman Catholic Church in Eumundi which was high on the hill at the Crescent Road end of Gridley Street. Cooroy historian Betty Sutton who knew Harold, remembered he had a daughter called Joan, recalled she married Joe Nilon and they took over the farm. Harold Lawson Mitchell died 1 August 1966 aged 75 and was buried in the Eumundi Cemetery. Allan Archibald Mitchell died in Brisbane 1960 and was buried in Yandina Cemetery. Special thanks to local Bryan Cooper who brought the sign and story to the attention of The Green and DE.
