T his issue ... Every year Anzac Day connects us to our community and our heritage. It makes us take stock of how easy life is in comparison to 100 years ago. This year, as the sun rose over the ANZAC centenary memorial in Verrierdale, I hugged my son and told him about his Great Grandpa, Great Great Grandfather, Uncles, Aunts and cousins who’ve served in Australia’s wars. I am truly hopeful my children will never know what it means to take up arms, leave family and watch friends die at such a young age. And I can’t fathom what it must be like for those who live such a truth in a war-torn country today. Air Marshal Geoff Shepherd said in his speech, “Freedom is not free, it demands sacrifice. Each generation must face new and emerging threats. We still fight for our freedom and for the right of people to choose.” Freedom is indeed a privilege, yet the thought of sending my children off to fight a vicious war to defend it is something I find truly incomprehensible and terrifying.

Business A WA R D W I N N I N G R O B I N S O N ARCHITECTS Local Eumundi architect Jolyon Robinson of Robinson Architects took out another prestigious award at the 2015 Sunshine Coast Australian institute of architecture Awards on Friday 17 April at Maroochy Surf Club. This year, Robinson Architects won a commendation and the Regional Building of the Year award for their Lake Weyba Duplex. Historically the Duplex has been a challenging building type to get aesthetically right, but Jolyon’s design takes advantage of the corner site and the two residences have a feeling of separation and privacy as well as maintaining a strong connection to the landscape outside. Jolyon

said for him the win was a great thrill as the jury panel is made up of his peers. The Lake Weyba Duplex will now progress as a candidate for the Queensland Architecture Awards in June.

Friday 22nd May 2015 - School of Arts Guest Speaker: Sandy Zubrinich, Chairperson, Sunshine Coast Business Council “Investment and Advocacy for Generations to come on the Sunshine Coast” (includes AGM)

Mr Elmes told the group that our region has a higher than average aging population and there’s an urgent need to create opportunities here for young people so they’ll stay for work. This will balance the demographic long term and increase income per capita. Currently this region has the lowest average earnings in the State. Mr Elmes said creating job opportunities while having a good economy within a sustainable environment is key.

At last Thursday’s Eumundi Chamber breakfast meeting at The Fig Tree, Member for Noosa Glen Elmes (right) caught up with Chamber President Barrie Adams (left) and Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor’s Centre manager Wendy Birrell. Sunshine Coast Councillor (SCC) Cr Steve Robinson was also at the morning and spoke to the group about Council’s economic plan for the Coast: creating new job potential and initiatives such as the solar farm in Valdora which will go towards making the region leaner and greener, creating net energy savings over time for rate payers. Council are also looking into a long term light rail network across the Sunshine Coast, and remain keen for the new airport runway project go ahead to facilitate high end tourism and develop a competitive international business hub here on the Coast.

Business A N Z A C C E N T E N A RY B A L L At the ANZAC Centenary Ball held Saturday 18 April, officers, gentlemen - even a best dressed admiral - could be found cutting a rug with their bejewelled partners to wartime tunes ranging from the upbeat big band favourite In the Mood, the post war Rock Around the Clock and the nostalgic I’ll Be Seeing You. The Doo Wop Girls and Guys were in fine voice and bush band Flash Jack led the young and the young at heart in many an Irish jig and bush dance, making the most of the Eumundi School of Arts dance floor. Set against the backdrop of sandbags and 500 blood red poppies (made by two loyal volunteers), it was a fitting tribute to Eumundi’s diggers as well as a celebration of our community hall. Eumundi Historical Association’s President Donata Page explained to the 100 guests that the ball wasn’t held to make a profit but “to showcase the grand old dame.” It was a night of nostalgia and a chance to remember the close to 100 men who enlisted from Eumundi to serve in WW1. Event

Leo Wiles

organiser and Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre manager Wendy Birrell said, “It was another night of fond memories for the grand ol’ dame - the Eumundi School of Arts and truly one to remember.” Local celebrity chefs Max Porter and Peter Wolfe from “Old Dogs New Trix” served up wartime style rations which included; rabbit pie, meat loaf damper, devilled eggs and fish and chips in individually wrapped parcels of reproduction newspaper from the era. A table groaning with delicious desserts made by a bevy of volunteers were a treat to look at and to eat towards the end of the night. It was this attention to detail by the incredible fleet of volunteers that set the tone for what was a fun filled evening and ended with a tear-jerking finale and production values that would put Baz Lurhman to shame. Hair rose on the back of necks and a tear fell with the final notes of We’ll Meet Again. I for one hope we do meet once more on that wonderful sprung dance floor milled from our very own Eumundi timber.

Community A N Z A C – 1 0 0 years A procession of locals walked along Verrierdale Rd in the dark towards the community hall where they came together in the garden in front of the new memorial site to remember the ANZACS at the dawn service. Piper Jimmy McKinlay welcomed in the morning as the sun came up. He was joined by The Noosa Chorale, a small assembly of local returned soldiers, community groups, councilors,

Verrierdale politicians and locals of all ages, in remembering the ANZACS and all service men and women who have fought for their country overseas. After the laying of wreaths and singing of the Australian and New Zealand national anthems, much of the community sat down together and enjoyed a traditional Gunfire breakfast. Community Eumundi Eumundi’s centenary ANZAC Day march saw an impressive turnout and continues to grow in numbers every year. The street was lined with locals, proud parents and many market stallholders as returned service men and women, community groups, light horse riders and school children marched up Memorial Dr under the canopy of trees planted as a living memorial to fallen soldiers. The assembly stopped to lay wreaths under a memorial tree and reflect as the Discover Eumundi bell tolled 27 times – once for every local man who never returned from WW1 and WW2. The community then congregated at the Amphitheatre to hear the Noosa Chorale and Melissa Isles sing, observe a minute’s silence and listen to speeches which included a moving and poignant one from Eumundi’s Returned Air Marshal (retired) Geoff Shepherd. It was really terrific to be invited to the ANZAC Day Remembrance morning tea by the House With No Steps in Doonan. A real highlight of this event was representatives from the light horse battalion and their magnificent horse Mr Fire who held centre stage. Families from the House With No Steps honoured their guests with a wonderful presentation in commemoration of our fallen diggers. A big congratulations to Phillip, Jeanie and the fantastic staff at the House With No Steps for a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable ANZAC Day service. Well, as we all know last Saturday was a very special occasion and it was indeed a privilege to attend the Eumundi ANZAC Day Service to mark the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli. I was particularly moved by the dedication of a lone pine tree that was a direct descendant of the original line pine in Gallipoli. With the summer sizzle finally

making way for our idealic autumn weather, the Eumundi Markets really are becoming even more popular. It’s fantastic to see so many people buying local at the markets and supporting the wonderful array of goods our market vendors produce, make and grow. As the saying goes “fresh is best” and you really can’t any fresher and cleaner than what’s on display from local growers at the Eumundi Markets! Of course, the markets are also a terrific spot for my monthly ‘meet and greet’ sessions that are open and available to anyone who would like to stop and chat with me about any issues affecting the local area or our region as a whole. Not surprisingly, the Sekisui House proposal at Yaroomba was a hot topic of discussion at the most recent session and the consensus was most definitely opposed to the development proceeding. The next meet and greet in Eumundi will be held on Wednesday July 1 from 10am to 12pm.

Heritage T he E u m u ndi L one P ine This year on Anzac Day saw the planting and dedication of a descendant of a Lone Pine from Gallipoli. Planted near the Eumundi Amphitheatre it will grow and become a focal point for future Anzac Day commemorations. A plaque in front of the tree was created and donated to the community by John Pilling a monument and memorial mason who installed it at the site on a stone plinth. The story of the Lone Pine is a poignant one. On 6 August 1915, the 1st Australian Infantry Division launched a major offensive at Plateau 400 at Gallipoli, Turkey. The ridges were once covered with the Aleppo Pine, which had been cut down to cover and line trenches, leaving one solitary pine. This area then became known as Lone Pine Ridge. In the three days of fighting the ANZACs lost 2,000 men and the Turks losses were estimated at 7,000.

cones from this lone pine to his mother in Inverell, NSW. Mrs McMullen sowed some of the seeds some 13 years later. Two seedlings were grown and one was presented to the town of Inverell. The Duke of Gloucester planted the second tree at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra in 1934. Sgt Keith McDowell of the 24th Battalion brought back a pinecone and gave it to his aunt, Mrs Emma Gray, of Warrnambool, Victoria. Four seedlings were grown and planted at several Shrines of Remembrance in Victoria. In 1990, two trees were taken back to Gallipoli by war veterans who attended the memorial service that marked the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Lone Pine Ridge. Kids E S S A nzac D ay Eumundi State School’s captains led the ANZAC memorial last Friday under the canopy of trees planted during and after WW1 as a living memorial. Air Marshall Shepherd explained to the school children, teachers, parents and locals that this was the first time Australia had sent its young people overseas to fight. Children from every class laid a wreath under the memorial cross as the school reflected on the loss of war. Air Marshall told the students that the ANZACS should be remembered for their bravery, friendship, compassion and humour. The way the soldiers conducted themselves during that war set the tone for how we should conduct ourselves today. The three main things the children should strive to replicate are: Purpose, Responsibility and Compassion. One of the lovely traditions at Eumundi State School to come out of ANZAC Day commemoration is the parents creating wreathes for children from each class to carry. The kids walk to school with flowers brought from home to decorate their classes wreath.

Harrison Bergman will travel to the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre in Tamworth to attend the Paint Horse Association of Australia’s national championships where he’ll be showing multiple horses from around Australia. Harrison will be competing in both Open and Youth events in huge classes and will also attend clinics while there. Harrison’s Mum Dale said her son is very serious about

competing and it is hard keeping up with him, “I have been to three horse shows in a week!” Harrison’s dream is to represent Australia at the World Youth Titles in America and learn more about showing western performance horses over there. “He is right up there for selection, but there are about 44 youth at the top and eight places in the team,” Dale said.

Two weeks ago, Imogen placed second overall at Senior Regionals SEQ. Imogen juggles school at St Andrew’s Anglican College with 20 hours a week training with her coach, Rimma Lazarus above left.

This is the third year in the row that Imogen has walked away with this award. Imogen has earned a place in the state team ready to compete at The Australian Gymnastics Championships in May.

In the footsteps of the famous Ella brothers (Mark, Glen and Gary) and more recently the Fainga’a brothers (Saia and Anthony) who have played for the Wallabies, the twin Sparks brothers from the Dragons Junior Rugby Union Club are starting to make their mark on the Rugby field. Jack and Will Sparks, (pictured) who attend Eumundi State School, have signed up to play in the Dragons Under 7’s team in the 2015 Sunshine Coast Junior season. Their coaches, Doug Toms and father Dan Sparks, have been impressed with the way the boys and their team have already started to exhibit a real development of skills as well as an enjoyment of playing the game. young age the boys and girls participate in a modified version of the game called Walla Rugby, where a two handed touch on the waist constitutes a “tackle”. Other elements of the game, such as scrums and lineouts are noncontested. So far, the teams from the Dragons have played three development or training rounds and are now eagerly looking forward to the start of the regular season on Saturday 2 May. Parents of prospective players born in 2009/2008 (Under 7s) or 2005/2004 (Under 11s) are still welcome to bring their future Rugby stars along to training and registration on Thursday afternoons, 4-5.15pm at Eumundi Showgrounds. 15

Health EMBRACING AUTUMN Autumn is now here and in its full force bringing with it crispness in the air and even more majestic blue sky. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) there are five elements rather than the four in the western world with metal being the element in TCM that governs autumn. Metal gives us our sense of value, quality and integrity, so that we may look beyond our day-to-day existence and provide us with the power to let go of what no longer serves us. The trees have started to shed their leaves, and those leaves go back to the Earth so it can become rich compost used to feed the next generation of plants. Nature instinctively informs us about our inner cycles of creating and letting go. You don’t see the trees stubbornly holding onto decayed leaves for the following year. This is the same within us! How many of us go against the rhythms of nature

Trent Banyan B.H.Sc (Acupuncture) & Yoga Teacher

and hold onto what we have produced and accumulated, not just physically but also on mental and emotional levels. In TCM the lungs and large intestine govern metal element and autumn. They control our breath, pores and our waste, showing the importance this element plays in cleansing the body. Imagine they failed in doing their jobs and the amount of physical ailments that may occur as a repercussion. If you have chest complaints such as a cough, bronchitis or easily catch flus and colds, have rashes, poor quality skin, feel emotionally fragile, constipated or have issues to do with elimination then your metal element may need to be in more harmony. Embrace autumn through observing nature, it’s beginning to rest and slow down and we too should

do the same. Go through your house and discard, donate or even sell any clutter that you don’t need anymore. Mentally bring awareness to attitudes that you’re holding onto and attempt to resolve them and then let them go. For those issues you’re unable to resolve directly, write them down on paper and burn the paper symbolising the release of the content. You can use your breath through breathing in all that life has to offer and exhaling any impurities or anything that does not serve you anymore and you can also use yoga asana and qi gong exercises. You can also book in for an acupuncture treatment at Double Happiness as they will use their knowledge of energy and the mind and body to assist you towards optimal balance so that you are at one with the energies of autumn and the metal element within you.

Outdoors FIRE BRIGADE NEWS - EUMUNDI N ews from the W ildlife C entre Every summer, all of us watching the TV will be shown advertisements regarding child safety and swimming pools. What is totally ignored are the number of animals that are also trapped and drowned in backyard pools. From frogs, snakes and birds to bandicoots and koalas - it’s yet another hazard facing our wildlife. I have to put my hand up and admit that when we lived in Brisbane we had a swimming pool and some creatures did drown. Most victims were frogs - in particular pobblebonks and striped marsh frogs. It was always very sad to scoop them out of either the filter box or from the bottom of the pool. When we fly over suburbs it’s always eye popping to see just how many pools there are in the suburbs and the yearly total of dead wildlife must be horrible. There are a few things we can do to cut down the drownings. Here are a few, but readers might also have some worthwhile suggestions. For starters some large rope can be hung over the edge in several spots so that snakes and frogs can get purchase. Kon Hepers has suggested shade cloth be draped from the edge and just into the water so that the Kreepy doesn’t get snagged. Pool noodles can also be deployed. Put your thinking cap on and think what might work for you and your pool situation. Please be aware that any prevention method needs to be child safe and things like rope should only be used when there are NO children within the pool

enclosure. I had noticed over the years that dry conditions always increased the casualty rate so extra birdbaths in the garden can be a help. Water filled plates on the ground are great for smaller snakes and lizards. The koala as mentioned earlier certainly died whilst trying to reach the water. Yes koalas do drink when it gets very dry. Many pools have beaches and if you are considering a pool, perhaps one which tapers to a beach is very child and animal friendly. Gill also asked me to mention the new glass pool fencing which looks good but is lethal to many birds. We all need to enjoy our lives, but wildlife also needs to be considered.

Rural Fire Brigades are a volunteer service. Collectively Brigade members contribute many hours of their time to the community for no monetary reward. So why do it? It turns out that it’s for our own good! Studies suggest that volunteering leads to improved physical and mental wellbeing. The Act, Belong, Commit campaign promoted by the WA Mental Health Commission provides guidelines for positive mental health: • Act: keep mentally, physically and socially active. • Belong: join community groups, go to events, get involved.

local area. Yes, it’s often hot, smoky, dusty and exhausting work. However, in our society, where our mental and physical wellbeing face complex challenges, we individuals need our communities just as our communities need us. Volunteering might be just the thing needed to reconnect with our towns and landscape – the act, belong, commit advice put into practice. So volunteer! Fire Brigade, SES, Bushcare groups, Eumundi Green, the list goes on – these are organizations that provide individual and community benefits that money can’t buy. You might even enjoy yourself.

• Commit: take up a cause, learn something new, volunteer … The volunteer Rural Fire Service provides opportunities to tick all those boxes. On top of that, if you love the bush you’ll get to help protect and preserve it, learn new skills and really get to explore the

Letters BAL L A REA L JOY On Saturday night I attended the ANZAC Cente nary Ball in the beautiful Eumundi School of Arts and a wond erful night was had by all. The retro food by Max Porte r and Peter Wolf, enter tainment from Doo Wop Dolls and Guys , Flash Jack and support of many volunteers including Paulin e the Rotar y exchange student from France and a WOOFA currently staying with Wendy, made for a memorable evening. It was such fun to see people up on the floor learning new/o ld dances from Flash Jack and some of the dancers really wowe d the crowd with their fabulous moves ... I think the Temp leton family influence really shone through! Seeing young people enjoying themselves at an event that some might think was only for “oldies” was a real joy. The Doo Wop Dolls and Guys pictorial tribute song to Eumundi WWI men who didn’ t return was both beautiful and very moving. Congratulations and thanks to EHA and their volunteers for putting on this wond erful evening. Clytie Glass, Noosaville.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTION On behalf of the Rotary Club of Eumundi I would sincerely like to thank The Green for generously providing the free advertising for the Katie Rose Summer All Over Long Lunch [held in March]. The inside cover advertisement certainly was impressive and raised the profile of our function. It is the kindness you showed in assisting us that helped us make the day the success it turned out to be. We sincerely thank you for your contribution. Kind regards, Bronwyn Innes, Rotary Club of Eumundi.

MAKE OUR ROAD SAFE I recently wrote to Sunshine Coast Council requesting them to reconsider the new speed limit allocated to Seib Rd, Eumundi. It’s now a 70km p/hr zone; I want it back to the 60km p/hr that it was before. My family has lived on Seib Rd for more than 10 years. The increase in speed puts our children and everyone else’s children on the road in danger. Does council expect a car to be able to pull up in time on a blind, narrow corner travelling 70km p/ hr if there is a child on the roadlet alone a truck? Cars visiting the road often speed; increasing the limit to 70km p/hr may see those drivers increase their speed to 80km p/hr. Our beloved pets and cattle are also at risk. The condition of the road is also a factor. The majority of Seib Rd is narrowed, the surface is damaged, potholed and dangerous, and is subject to flooding. It has many blind

corners on which driveways are situated and, to the majority of traffic, it is a dead end. Council responded that they reduced the limit from the default 100km/h rural speed limit to the current 70km/h as a result of resident requests for council to review the limit. This review recommended 70km/h and this recommendation was ratified by council’s Speed Management Committee. That verdict does not keep our children, animals and the people traveling on our road safe. I’ve wondered who agrees or disagrees with me. If you’re interested in helping me change the council’s decision, please email me. Erin Picken, Eumundi. admin@ rechargeelectrical.com

Our community, our voice. Who doesn’t love a rickety bridge? You may be aware that Sunshine Coast Council is commencing a complete refurbishment of our beloved Caplick Park playground in coming months. This redevelopment is planned over three stages and will include a natural play area within a “dry creek bed”, new swings and rocking apparatus, refurbishment of our famous choo choo train and many other improvements to make this an even better family attraction. And we’re thrilled that the Council is making this a priority for 2015! But, we also know that the older kids also love to play – so ECCO, working with the Cooroora Woodworkers and in collaboration with EDCA and Councillors Greg Rogerson and Steve Robinson are committing a total of $25,000 to build a fabulous rickety bridge and fort play zone that will extend between the two massive fig trees inside the playground. We are also looking at including some musical and percussion play apparatus and an upgrade to the basketball half court for more fun and creative play for kids of all ages. All part of our quest to make Eumundi a fabulous place to live and visit everyday of the week. We’d like to hear from you, what makes Eumundi great? What would you like to see in Eumundi? Love to hear your thoughts… please email Anthony: gm@eumundicco.com.au
