“We were more than satisfied with how Sirah helped us in selling our property in Doonan. She was very helpful in agreeing what should be our target price, in sourcing the right buyers to inspect, in ensuring that our property looked the best it could and that we put emphasis on the right elements and then in negotiating with the buyer to achieve our target. All in a couple of weeks, so a very big vote of confidence in Sirah. We would not hesitate in recommending her to anyone looking to move in the property market in the Doonan area.” Sellers – Julie and Neil

Notes

T his issue ... I remember some of the most fun nights as a child involved running around at dusk as the temperature plummeted, feet and hands freezing, breath misty, hysterically laughing as my cohorts (usually cousins) and I sprinted in the opposite direction to our mum’s calls to come inside. When finally dragged indoors and into a bath, I remember that strangely painful and wonderfully warming sensation of limbs burning - tingling - and defrosting. Then the feeling of exhaustion and complete contentment, in front of a toasty fire, reading and listening to my parent’s records. Simple memories I’d forgotten until recently when I found myself chasing a gaggle of cheeky kids around our backyard in the dark. Their feet blue, cheeks flushed, covered in dirt, scratches and happiness.

C om p u ter N otes Computer viruses are extremely common these days and very in your face, even though they may not seem it at the time. Traditional viruses are destructive in nature with the intent to just cause flat out havoc. A lot of what we see these days is called adware, spyware, scam-ware or scareware. How they operate is to convince you something is wrong and that they can fix your problem, at a price of course. One of the popular viruses cons people into thinking that the Australian Federal Police have locked down their PC and they are going to be fined $250,000 or face jail time - or they can pay $100 right now to make the problem go away! Others infiltrate your computer or tablet by bundling with legitimate software, downloaded from the internet. They can also come through in ill-gotten software; such as Torrents or illegally downloaded music or movies.

BUSINESS TIPS Nick Rutland, Digital Marketing Strategy Group

computer. This is also how they get past a lot of anti-virus software; because you have said it’s ok to install it, the Antivirus isn’t activated. Most of the time this malicious software is a cleaning program or a virus scanner which has found lots of threats/problems on your computer and needs to be fixed straight away. It’s all a con and often the problems they have “found” don’t even exist. The best piece of advice I give is if you are downloading from the internet check it’s from the original website, check each “next” box before you click through, and use legal channels to get what you are looking for.

Once you run what you have downloaded you will often be bombarded with lots of terms and conditions which (let’s all agree) we skip every time. In the midst of our “next, next, next, next, install” most of those “next” are actually malicious software which has been allowed to install on your

Mobile friendl y business website Let’s assume your website is fully optimised for Google search. Your site will normally appear in Google results based on words or phrases customers might use to find your services or products, if they don’t know who you are yet. If you are in a niche sector or do something unusual where your business does not have a large number of competitors then you may even be getting on to page one of Google! Statistics are telling us that around 75% of us are now browsing and searching exclusively on mobile devices - smart phones and tablets – as opposed to desktop and laptop computers. In fact the use of computers by people (apart from professionals), is in a decline that’s closely matched by the increase in the use of mobile devices for browsing and email. The way we live has adjusted to the changes that the internet has delivered and technology continues to develop to meet our future needs. Some of us still wear watches because we like them but a watch is seen as an old fashioned single function device and therefore not interesting. Apple of course now offers an iconic “watch” phone that is multi-function and still tells us the time. Google saw this downsizing of gadgets and changing user habits coming a long time ago and recently announced that from 21

April they would no longer index non-mobile friendly websites in searches done on mobile devices. In simple terms this means if your website is not fully responsive (mobile friendly) it will soon disappear from Google search results on mobile devices. If your website is not responsive it may already have dropped off and if it hasn’t yet Google has promised it will. Getting your ranking back once your site is responsive will be a challenge but it’s just a matter of time. Google wants us all to have a nice mobile website experience website layouts that automatically adjust to the screen, content that loads fast, simple navigation, big text, fewer clicks to get to where you want to go, less clutter, easy shopping, buttons and links not too close together and a number of other prerequisites for happy mobile browsing. Your business website must be mobile friendly very shortly or it will no longer be available via Google search to up to 75% of your potential customers. Google provide a test site (google.com/ webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly) where you can check your site for mobile friendliness. Many websites only have a responsive home or splash page so you need to check every page in your site. My next article is about Search Engine Optimisation. digitalmarketingstrategygroup. com.au/

Business EUMUNDI LIVING, LOVING AND L I V E L I H O O D Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher For the past year in my role as general manager of Eumundi Combined Community Organisation (ECCO) I have had an incredible opportunity to meet with many passionate people who make Eumundi their home or place of business. It’s clear we have many elements that make Eumundi unique. A place that welcomes many new arrivals each year – tree-changers looking for a place away from the madding crowd, self-contained professionals, artisans and young families drawn by our community spirit, arts, music, heritage, township… or maybe just our fantastic schools. Eumundi is a multi-faceted township – but, a careful balance is necessary so all aspects of the town and community thrive, both commercially and from a lifestyle perspective. In recent times we’ve seen the loss of the newsagency, butcher and pastry chef along with other businesses closing or struggling to break even. Additionally there’s evidence the Wednesday and Saturday Markets parking is trending down year-on-year. Fortunately we do have a new first rate medical centre, a beautiful new artisan’s gallery and great organic cafes, a gelataria, and even a fab new burger bar at the Fig Tree! The pending upgrade to the market terraces will provide further opportunity to upscale our Markets’ experience and brand. And we are blessed with some key tourism and community events including the Australian Body Art Festival, Eumundi Sculpture Prize, Xmas in Eumundi and Night Markets, Eumundi

Live, Festival of Small Halls, Doo Wop Dolls, Full Moon Dance, Eumundi Business Awards, Reality Bites writers festival and upcoming Author Nights and special events at our lovely School of Arts including Eumundi World Cinema. Plus we can also boast ongoing gigs and special events at Discover Eumundi, our two pubs, wonderful cafes and plenty of great coffee along Memorial Drive. Eumundi also boasts good community and lifestyle amenities including our aquatic centre, tennis courts and the soon to be refurbished Caplick Park Playground (including a cool new rickety bridge). Furthermore, there is a strong groundswell to finally get cracking with Eumundi’s community garden concept.

news The Belli Dance for the Cancer Council was attended by 86 dancers, many dressed in blue and yellow to support the Cancer Council fundraising effort. $750 was raised including donations from dancers and contribution from the Belli Community Hall. The annual RSPCA cent sale will be held on Saturday 27 June at the CWA Hall on Maple St, Cooroy from 12pm. Draw commences at 1.15pm. There will be a large variety of prizes including a special Grocery Table this year. No Entry Fee but afternoon tea is available for a gold coin donation. Funding for local groups Council has just endorsed its latest round of community grant funding and I’m pleased to announce several Division 10 groups will receive a funding boost for their projects. These groups include Arts Connect Inc., which is developing monthly open studio trails for artists to share their skills with the public. Our Community Grants Program is a wonderful opportunity for Council to provide a boost to these groups that do so much in the community. A big thank you to all the hardworking volunteers who give their valuable time, effort and commitment to benefit the Sunshine Coast. We’ve also recently awarded Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants. Local projects include a new multi-faceted live rock-opera production by HoneyBird So much on offer in our region I recently drove along Maroochydore’s Bradman Avenue and spotted the sea plane attraction in flight. Have you seen it on your way past? I know this isn’t Division 10 news but I think it’s worth a mention. Our region has all sorts of events and experiences on offer and it’s great to see another one set up here. Next time you’re in Maroochydore,

take a look or give it a go. I was proud to support this particular experience when the business permit application came up for debate at a recent council meeting. Council’s plan for koalas Did you know koalas contribute $1.1 billion to the Australian tourism industry? Council has drafted an action plan, funded by the Environment Levy, to guide the management and protection of the Sunshine Coast’s koala population and wants to know what you think. You can read the draft plan online or in libraries and complete a feedback form to have your say. Submissions close at 5pm on 26 June. Discover Eumundi It was good to take part in recent opening celebrations for the building extension of the Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre. It was officially opened by Senator James McGrath on behalf of the Federal Government, which contributed approximately $165,000 to the project. Council established all-weather vehicular access to the new building and to the existing Museum. Congratulations to all involved in the collaborative effort and to the Eumundi Historical Association.

VERRIERDALES’S BIGGEST M O R N I N G T E A Sirah Robb Congratulations to Fay Wiggins on raising $1620 at her Biggest Morning Tea held at the Verrierdale Hall on 28 May. The event was a huge success with more than 25 people in attendance. Thanks must go to Fay and all those who contributed to the funds raised for The Cancer Council by purchasing raffle tickets and buying items like hand knitted scarves and home-made jams that were offered for sale on the day. Markets Original Eu m u n di Market u pdate Daniel West Markets are not just about great shopping and quality products. They are also about engaging with our community, sharing a moment and seeing something different. These elements underpin some great projects currently underway for our lovely market grounds. The OEM Art Gallery Wall is under construction at our main stage area. This collaborative project involves 15 of our talented artist stallholders, who are each creating a unique piece that will be hung on the wall in the weeks ahead. It will be an amazing asset to our market grounds.

Another arts project we’re working on is with local artist Grant Rothwell “The Heart

Whisperer”. His metal hearts are springing up all over the postcode and we’re proud to say they’ll feature prominently in another installation project that’ll come to life in the Loop section of the markets. We’ve also developed a garden project team being steered by Jamie Loft - donut king on market days, but also an experienced landscape designer. The first plans have been drawn up to rejuvenate the garden beds in our market precinct. Exciting stuff!

PHOTO EXHIBITION OPENING There was a great turnout of Original Eumundi Market (OEM) stallies and locals for the photographic exhibition opening of Market Characters by Alain Bouvier. Books A SPOOL OF BLUE THREAD REVIEW Judith Pattison Anne Tyler is a Pulitzer Prize winning (for Breathing Lessons, 1988) American novelist, short story writer and literary critic. I first came across her writing in the ‘70s, when, like a number of my women friends, I discovered the immense pleasure and relief of finding my life reflected in books written by and about women - sometimes dismissed as purveyors of the “domestic”. Anne Tyler, Carol Shields, Alice Munro, Doris Lessing, Amy Tan and Jane Smiley are just a few of these authors, and of them Anne Tyler is my favourite. Breathing Lessons is the best book about conventional marriage I’ve ever read. A Spool of Blue Thread, her latest book and possibly last, once again deals with the domestic. While it also tells the wider story of the Whitshank family - its children, their working lives and one remarkable house are all characters - it is once again the three generations of marriages that dominate and enthral. As Tyler details them it’s impossible not to get caught up in the seemingly irrelevant details of ordinary lives across generations. These fine details weave the whole. Once you open the door to this family, wander around a bit and observe, you won’t be leaving until they let you go. It is the depth of the characterisation as much as the story that engages. Even though they are full of eccentricities, these are real people full of surprises. For

Searching for My Father: Ramona Koval’s autobiography Ramona Koval’s parents were Holocaust survivors who fled their homeland and settled in Melbourne. As a child, Koval learned little about their lives—only snippets from traumatic tales of destruction and escape. But she always suspected that the man who raised her was not her biological father.

example the following passage is about Abby, the central character who seems so much in charge of her life: “If only she didn’t feel so pushed aside … so extraneous, so unnecessary. She had always assumed that when she was old, she would have total confidence, finally. But look at her: still uncertain. In many ways she was more uncertain now than she had been as a girl.” After 20 novels, a new book by Anne Tyler is still something to look forward to. Let’s hope this isn’t her last.

One day in the 1990s, long after her mother’s death, she decides she must know the truth. A phone call leads to a photograph in the mail, then tea with strangers. Before long Koval is interrogating a nursing-home patient, meeting a horse whisperer in tropical Queensland, journeying to rural Poland, learning other languages and dealing with

Kafkaesque bureaucracy, all in the hope of finding an answer. A quest for identity recounted with Koval’s customary humour, Bloodhound takes hold of the reader and never lets go. It is a moving story of the terrible cost of war and of family secrets. textpublishing.com.au/books/ bloodhound

CRAFT PROJECTS APLENTY AT CWA HALL Eumundi craft group meet in Eumundi’s CWA Hall every Monday afternoon from 3.30-5pm during school term with teacher Bridget Bygott who shares a new project with the group of all ages. Adults and kids from North Arm, Eerwah Vale, Eumundi and further afield learn crafty new skills – or remember lost ones . This week’s project was making pompoms and God’s eyes that were then tied onto sticks to create colourful staffs.

Every year we celebrate the youngest members of our community with a day that’s all about fun and friendship. At Eumundi State School the prep to year two students, along with local toddlers, enjoyed a range of activities including: box monsters, weaving, plasticine, obstacle course and - ever the favourite - face painting with the ‘big kids’.

On Sunday 21 June, the group will have a family gathering and celebration for the Winter Solstice. Next term the group will learn circular weaving. $10 per person. For more information contact Bridget Bygott 0402 142 030.

N O R T H A R M ’ S A R T TA L E N T Every Tuesday afternoon an enthusiastic and talented group of children can’t wait to attend their art class at North Arm State School (NASS). Under the instigation of Kelley Edgar, the school principal, an art class has been offered to children who show a talent in this subject. To

Margaret Killip, NASS Art teacher

join the class the children submit a collection of drawings or paintings along with a letter explaining why they would love to join the GENAS (Growing excellence at North Arm Students) art class. Earlier this year the children experimented with and enjoyed the use of water colour pencils and water colour crayons with spectacular results. Zebras and giraffes were the subject of the water colour paintings. Currently

we are working with acrylics creating a beautiful background incorporating the moon and sky. On this background the children are then going to paint silhouettes of trees which will be etched with fantastic patterns.

Health HOW TO KILL THE COLD

health n e ws

Dr Jo Deverill, Nambour General Hospital Emergency Medicine Staff Specialist Ait-CHOO! It’s winter, and the common cold is back in force. With it comes sore throats, runny noses, blocked ears and bunged sinuses which cause mucus misery for millions of Australian adults and children - and the economy will receive a multi-billion dollar hit from absenteeism. The common cold may be commonplace, but it is also a big deal. So, in an era when we can treat AIDS, transplant lungs and zap cancers, why can’t we prevent it, cure it, or just make the symptoms go away? This question has been bugging medical scientists for decades. In Britain, the Common Cold Unit was set up in 1946 in a miserable field in Wiltshire. For the next 53 years volunteers were sprayed with mucus, injected, bled, fed tablets and generally experimented upon.

blighters. Apart from … zinc. Lots of zinc. Like a zinc lozenge every two hours. Which might reduce the duration of a cold from say seven to six days. Shame about the bad taste … and the nausea … and the potential to cause permanent loss of smell. So much for zinc then. And so much for the Common Cold Unit, which was closed down a couple of years after the discovery. Now other stuff may be worth a go. Your pharmacist can offer antihistamines (meds that stop sneezing and runny noses), decongestants (unstuff blocked noses), mucolytics (dissolve thick mucus), expectorants (clear secretions) and antitussives (reduce cough). But none of these are particularly effective: paracetamol or aspirin are probably just as good.

The results? Well, for starters they found that the common cold isn’t just caused by one virus: it’s caused by hundreds of ‘em. They are almost impossible to immunise against and almost no medicines work against the

Vitamin C may shorten symptoms, by a day at most. Echinacea, garlic and ginseng might help but clinical trials haven’t been positive. Antibiotics won’t help either, unless you also have a bacterial

infection like pneumonia or bronchitis. Having green mucus doesn’t necessarily mean you need antibiotics. If you are prescribed them, you may also end up with diarrhoea and a rash. So, it’s not looking good in our war against the common cold. However there is one thing that will kill cold viruses, stony dead: the humble tissue. While common cold viruses can stay alive for hours in the air - and on hands and tables and cups and forks - tissue paper neutralises them. So at least if you get a cold, you can take your revenge on the culprits and prevent them infecting your friends and family. When you sneeze: catch it, bin it and then wash your hands.

Dragons have a rough texture and many have spines on head and neck or on the throat and legs. They have excellent eyesight and are very swift runners, hence preferred habitat is more open country and many species are found in the desert near clumps of spinifex. One species found on the Sunshine Coast inhabits sub-tropical rainforests in more elevated areas. One such area is the

old-growth rainforest up near Maleny in the Mary Cairncross Reserve. Here you can find the Southern Angle-headed Dragon, Hypsilurus spinipes (Y-shaped tail with spiny legs). This is one of our most attractive lizards, somewhat resembling certain chameleons. It grows to about 110 mm SVL. But you have to have really good eyes or else be very lucky to even get a glimpse. This dragon, with its blotched olive/grey colouration is a camouflage expert and can be clinging to a tree right in front of your face and be practically invisible. Juveniles can be a dirty yellow colour, hard to see in dappled sunlight. We have been to Mary Cairncross Reserve many times and closely searched the tree trunks hoping to get a photograph, but have never seen one there. A friend (who supplied the images for this article) has also been there many times and often spots one, sometimes whilst having a coffee at the cafeteria. The range of this dragon is from the Border Ranges in northern

In Queensland there are about 28 – 30 species of dragons. Dragons are a family of lizards in the class Reptilia, or reptiles. Down here near the coast and in our immediate area the two species we generally encounter are the Eastern Bearded Dragon, which is often misidentified as a Frilled Lizard, and the Eastern Water Dragon, sometimes misidentified as a monitor (goanna). These species can grow to about 600 mm snout-vent length (SVL) with about as much or more length again if you include the tail. Other species can be as little as 50 mm SVL.

Outdoors E U M U N D I B ushcare G R O U P Kim Morris and Amber Grimley Eumundi recently hosted its very own War on Weeds day. The Sunshine Coast Council provided us with free plants to give away to people who brought along a bag of weeds. Apparently this was one of the best War on Weeds turn outs on the Sunshine Coast! Well done Eumundi, you should be proud! Over 30 bags of weeds were brought along and swapped for native plants. It’s good to see people are interested in making a difference on their own properties. Eumundi Bushcare Group vollies were also there pulling out more of the lovely weedy fishbone fern. Thanks team! The weed of the month is the Cocos Palm – Syagrus romanzoffiana. This palm was once very popular and it is seen a lot around Eumundi. It has now become a weed due to the ease with which it germinates. It was planted in Eumundi’s Sunken Garden and there are many seedlings popping up in the bushland surrounding

the garden. This palm can look quite ratty and is not a selfcleaning palm so it often looks unkempt. It has been found that Cocos palm fruits are a hazard to bats due to the large seeds getting caught in their jaws, also wearing down their teeth, and the unripe fruits may be toxic (Bat Conservation & Rescue QLD Inc.). Rats and cockroaches are also attracted to the fruits so they are more of a nuisance than a good behaving garden plant. The only way to get rid of this plant is to cut it down and bin the seeds so that they don’t spread. The next Eumundi Bushcare Group Meeting will be on Sunday 28 June 9.30am-12pm.

Letters DELIGHFUL EUMUNDI STORY

What you’re saying on Facebook … Eumundi’s entrances

I thought Leo Wiles’ Eumundi Roses in Full Bloom in the last Green was a truly delightful “Eumundi story”. The Eumundi community is quite organic in the way it grows, contracts and changes over time, which a healthy community must do. The Green does a great juggling act of representing the different current interest and activity groups in our area, itself being an ongoing record of our history, and the stories of the enduring people and activities that are here. The “old” families, what life was like in the past, traditional businesses and activities and beautiful life stories like that of Annette and Graeme. Fran Maguire, North Arm

It concerns me that the approaches to Eumundi are not as attractive as they could be. Coming from Noosa or using the Northern roundabout just near the railway overpass – this area is very neglected and rarely slashed or mown. Some regular attention and planting of trees and shrubs would make a big difference. I have approached our local councillor and was told it is a Mainroads responsibility. Mainroads have not responded to my suggestions. Similar attention to the Southern approaches to Eumundi would make a big difference too. We have so much to be proud of with our town but it could be a lot better. Noosa and its surrounds are a wonderful example of the way our landscaping could be too. Yours Sincerely, Anthony Everingham, Eumundi. Annie Jones: Surely with the amount of money Eumundi brings in to the local economy, we can have a makeover? Montville is a lovely example of a small town being looked after. Cindy Suters: Well said and absolutely agree. First impressions count and Eumundi with its artistic and cultural heritage should be presented with improved and inviting entrances from both directions. Ros Mayes: How many of

weekly. I wonder what the next step is…

the oldies remember old Alan Templeton planting and watering the trees at the entrances to Eumundi? It should be the Main Roads job, but if they will not come to the party, then perhaps a Residents Action Group could be formed? Interested locals could band together to make our town proud!

Peter J Djordjevic: Night stealth mission could be on the cards, and just as an added note...can we have something other than a new coffee shop where the news agents used to be? Amanda Di Rosa Has always seemed to me that Eumundi is just for taking money from tourists, not very much goes back into the beautification of town by the market owners. They take, but not a lot of public benefit is seen from the onslaught that is left behind after market days, the half up and down tents, the rubbish that is left around the side streets. Surely the owners of the markets could pay a local to maintain these roundabout entrances to town. That way the money would benefit a local and stay within the community.

Annie McDonald: I definitely agree, I think it is a shame that the approaches to Eumundi are so neglected! Come on whoever is responsible, get it together! Duncan Sayers: Never mind the entries into town: take a few steps beyond the main street on any non-market day and you’ll discover a shambles of halfdismantled tents and other bits of stall holder debris. Perhaps we could stop blaming council for everything (the parks they’re responsible for get a cleanup and mow) and have a look at those responsible for other property in the center of town.

Amanda Brooks Totally agree, very well addressed! Let’s hope they do something. Analiese Long Uh-oh, if we are inviting people to Eumundi on non-market days they will see the poor shanty-town look that is left in the market space. Better think about packing up the tarps and tent poles left lying around, coiling the electric cables and perhaps presenting a good image rather than shrugging it off with a nonmarket-day apology.

Maree Woodman: Maybe the markets could put money towards the town approaches? Andrew Stabilo Boss: It’s been an eye sore since the highway was upgraded. Check out the paint on the concrete barriers at the southern end - pretty shabby. Arzu Unel-Cleary: My husband and I talk about this almost
