Notes Editor’s note ...

A Hinterland moment

Our schools have been busy lately organising their major fundraising events for the year. Eumundi State School held its Arts in Action Day, Steiner its Children’s Fair, and North Arm is about to celebrate 130 years with a massive celebration (fireworks people!). These events take such an incredible amount of effort – hundreds of volunteer hours – from parents and staff. They are so important to our schools and exciting events on the kids’ calendars! We are extremely lucky to have such beautiful, nurturing schools in our region – they’re a credit to the staff, students, and to the glue – the parents. The next sculpture acquisition was announced last week; a popular choice which will add to the creative vibe of our village. Dick Caplick Park is going to be a great place to be – new playground, new sculpture – now we just need a dog park, a communal veggie patch… and a flying fox!

Just Love Eumundi! To RV... or not to RV - that is the question.

Recent newspaper reports have indicated that Australia’s caravanning industry is experiencing a golden era of growth with a new RV coming of the assembly line in Australia every 12 minutes. With over 550,000 caravans and motorhomes on the road this is one burgeoning bunch of happy campers! Aussies pay on average $125,000 to buy an RV and this industry is close to a massive $20 billion market – with main growth coming from cashed up retiring Baby Boomers. Tourism Research Australia states that the RV community make up 10% of all tourism visitor nights in Australia. And, our new RV stopover is licensed to take just 20 rigs. On the other hand, many market stallholders feel that the situation of RV’s in the carpark is becoming unacceptable, with a perception that they are parked irregularly and limit parking for regular Markets visitors.

Eumundi – Art Town, taki taking ng it to the streets!

With our rich heritage in the arts and with upcoming major events such as the Eumundi Sculpture Prize and the Australian Body Art Festival, its so exciting to see new street art popping up on the Eumundi canvas. More please! The Generator Gen Art Gallery - Art by anonymous

ECCO is committed to ensure that the RV stopover both enhances market trading and provides important tourist revenue for the town on the other five days of the week. The carpark was enlarged prior to building the RV amenities to increase car park spaces by an extra 60 - and the protocol on Market Days is to corral the RVs in a specific area where the maximum space used up for the 20 RVs is just 30 car spaces. We will be carefully reviewing the situation in coming months to ensure that there is definitely a net benefit to all Eumundi stakeholders from our major investment in Eumundi’s RV Stopover.

Eumundi Chamber of Commerce President Andy Dudas played host at his Fig Tree restaurant for a special networking night for Chamber members last Thursday evening. Local State Member Glen Elmes joined with many Eumundi business leaders for this delightful change from the monthly breakfast sessions where fellowship and cocktails were the order of the day along with Andy’s signature (and delicious) sliders and tapas style treats. Two speakers addressed the meeting: Annie Nolan, Coach – ecoBIZ, spoke passionately about making your business green for fun, and profit! There are free eco tools and assistance available for small business right now in Queensland, which have seen businesses make thousands of dollars worth of savings just by addressing simple things – like not lighting a sunny

room, or setting the aircon to 24 degrees in summer. TAFE East Coast recently found savings of $175,000 per year just by implementing some of the ecoBIZ tools and strategies. The Chamber has committed to work with business in town to see how Eumundi can further reduce its reliance on expensive energy. Cont’d on pg 6

Community Cont’d from pg 5 Sue Campin then spoke about Street Revitalisation Ideas for Eumundi and examples of other successful programs, such as Renew Newcastle and nearby Nambour where empty spaces are being populated by microbusinesses on a month-bymonth basis at minimal cost. This then leads to renewed and local business growth, a cultural

cohesion and community pride. As a starting point the Chamber will look to conducting an audit of vacant shops in Memorial Drive and from there see what opportunities may exist for our very own street revitalization. Next Chamber activity will revert to the regular monthly breakfast briefing – Friday 25 Sept. Stay tuned for time and place.

N oosa’s M P supports ESS Mr Glen Elmes MP said he has a soft spot for Eumundi State School (ESS) as it was the first place he gave an award when he first became Member for the Noosa region in 2006. He was very happy to donate a bicycle and helmet for the school’s Arts in Action fundraising day. Glen said he can still remember that feeling of freedom you have cycling around your neighbourhood on a new bike when you’re a kid. “Your world existed for as far as you could ride,” said Glen. EUMUNDI POLICE UPDATE Sgt John Delandelles Eumundi is currently experiencing an increase in stealing from vehicle offences. Last financial year there were only seven reported offences. There have already been four reported since the start of July this year. These type of offences are mostly opportunistic. The easiest and most effective means to combat this is by making sure your vehicle is locked when it is not being used. Remove all valuables including handbags, wallets, purses and briefcases and place other items of interest such as GPS devices, out of sight. All of these offences so far, have been committed in the town area and only 1 relates to registration plates being removed from a vehicle. Keep an eye out and report any suspicious activity. Don’t make it easy for them. Unregistered vehicles - The Department of Transport has removed the requirement for labels to be attached to vehicles and is not supplying them when registration is renewed. To avoid falling

Eumundi Range Road bridge As a quick update on the bridge work, I’d like to let you know that some of the timber from the old bridge is being stored for a future bridge entry statement. We’re not sure what form that would take and are working on concepts to present to community representatives. Some of the other safe and sturdy timbers are also being stored for future bridge repairs around the region. Dick Caplick Park It’s good to see the playground upgrade at Dick Caplick Park in full swing. Councillor Robinson and myself have each contributed an addition $9000 in funds towards this project to ensure we deliver a top quality playground that will provide fun for local kids well in to the future. Closing Memorial Drive I noticed a call on Facebook for my support in closing Memorial Drive on market days. On first glance this appears to have merit, however it really should

be a collective consensus from the businesses, community bodies and residents. I’m prepared to listen to the voice of the community and I understand there would be two alternate access routes (to the east and west). However, there would be significant traffic management costs each time and some business owners may feel this would have negative implications on their day to day trading. Say hello I’ll be at the markets on Wednesday 2 September between 10am and 12 noon for a community catch up if you want to drop by and say hello. I will gratefully accept accolades as well as grievances. Nambour’s TrackFest The community’s major fundraising event for Nambour Heritage Tramway – TrackFest – will have its second event on Saturday 5 September. Come along for great food, good music and lots of fun, all to raise funds for the tram.

into the trap of driving an unregistered vehicle, set reminders on phones, computers etc to ensure registration is paid by the due date. Fines of up to $376 will be imposed for driving an unregistered vehicle. After 28 days of being unregistered, insurance also lapses and creates a separate offence of driving an uninsured vehicle. Driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle is a Type 2 traffic offence, which can result in vehicle impoundment and forfeiture for repeat offenders. Trailers – There has been a spate of trailer thefts particularly in Noosa but also here in Eumundi and Cooroy. If possible keep your trailer out of sight from the road and secure it to something immoveable. Coupling locks are effective to a minor degree, but motivated thieves have removed these in the past with very little effort. Again, report any suspicious activity to Eumundi Police on 54428222 or Crime Stoppers on 1800333000. 6

Last week Sunshine Coast Council announced the 87 not-for-profit community organisations to be granted part of the $762,906 allocated to help meet their operational expenses this financial year. Books I L L U M I N AT I N G A U T H O R S Luminaries on the Loose was recently launched at The Bohemian Bungalow in graceful style. The book is a collection of stories which guides the reader along their “Archetypal Trail”, or the journey of life, based on the “three ancient and time-tested phases and twenty-two essential steps in life’s ultimate quest for success, health, happiness… and love.” As local author and publisher Nadine Love, passionately shared the ingredients of her transformational book and introduced her well-respected co-authors, a sense of belonging came over me. A peaceful smile came to my face and I knew I was in nurturing company. The co-authors of the book include: coaches, mentors, businessmen and women, presenters, health advocates, an astrologist, Nadine’s greatest joy, her daughter Mira and the love of her life, Dr John Cronin. Each of the 14 authors shared an open, personal and intimate story relevant to their own evolutionary growth.

Siona Howard

I curled up in bed with the book last night and got intertwined in the fascinating read. I have somehow connected to each of the chapters so far and this makes me realise just how rewarding and important it is to share our personal stories with the world. It really does open the door to human communication, connection and understanding. It links us all together. “Through the sacred quests and cycles of the seasons we discover we are not part of the world. We are the world.” – Ted Andrews

EUMUNDI’S NEXT SCULPTURE ANNOUNCED Meg Geer and Richard Thompson are the winners of Eumundi’s $20,000 sculpture prize for 2015 with their sculpture entitled The Spirit Orb. The winner was recently announced to a large crowd at Discover Eumundi’s new arts space Wan’din’in, where marquette’s (3D models) by the eight shortlisted sculptors were displayed. This year’s judges were: Samantha Littley, Curator of the University of Queensland Art Museum; Philip Bacon, Director, Philip Bacon Galleries; and Sunshine Coast architect and art collector John Mainwaring. In his speech on the night, Mr Bacon shared that the judges had been very impressed by the quality and diversity of the entrants and that it had been quite difficult to decide on this year’s winner considering the weight of the theme, The Anzac Spirit – yesterday, today, tomorrow. But reading the artist’s explanations gave great insight into the sculptures and motivations and put the works into context.

The parents enjoyed the bar and pizzas and watching their kids having a great time. The evening highlight was the annual art auction of works created by the children under the guidance of teachers and parents.

An overcast and drizzly day couldn’t dampen another wonderful Noosa Pengari Steiner School Children’s Festival in Doonan. The day was filled with colour and fun and the highlights were the excellent craft activities for kids, the scrummy homemade food at the children’s café, the chai and being serenaded by the sounds of strings wafting through the trees. It was a fantastic family celebration for our community. NPSS Principal Allen Kloeden said, “As well as the wonderful sense of community building that occurs through the Festival, the financial return flows through to the benefit of the students.” Allen added “On behalf of all the students and staff, I thank every single person who participated in any way, for your contribution to the school.” Photos thanks to Uwe Wulfen

Health O N YA B I K E

Dr Jo Deverill, Nambour General Hospital Emergency Medicine Staff Specialist

In 1842 a Scottish blacksmith knocked over a little girl in the Gorbals, a rough part of Glasgow. He was riding his own invention, a two-wheeled device that he called a “velocipede”. This was the first recorded bicycle accident. It brought on a fine of 5 shillings, but no permanent injury. Unfortunately modern roads are far more treacherous, owing to the advent of motor vehicles. 45 cyclists were killed on Australian roads in 2014. The most common cause of death was head injury. Human brains are protected by 7mm of hard bone. Like just about everything about the human body, skulls are amazing examples of engineering. They have evolved to protect human brains from low speed impacts, like falls from standing height onto dirt. But they smash like

eggs when they hit concrete or metal at 20 kph. Heads just weren’t designed to withstand this sort of abuse.

stroke. And the resultant excess mortality from these, outweighs the direct protective benefit of helmets.

on the road. The fewer cyclists there are, the less safe it may be because drivers just aren’t used to them.

In this setting, bike helmets work better than biology. They are made from expanded polystyrene, which absorbs the energy of a hard strike. Bike helmets have been shown to decrease the risk of skull fracture by about 80 per cent. So you would have thought that their use would be a no-brainer. And indeed mandatory bike helmet laws were brought into Australia in the early ‘90s.

The argument is multifaceted and furious and there are medical experts, risk analysts, civil libertarians - and cyclists - on either side of the debate. While helmets definitely decrease the rate of skull fracture, they aren’t so good at protecting brains from shaking (which can cause devastating brain damage, termed diffuse axonal injury). And although injury rates definitely went down after the new laws were introduced, much of the apparent benefit may just have been because there were fewer cyclists

So what’s the answer? I’ll leave the ethical and legal stuff to the Senate inquiry. Helmets protect your head. Bike riding is good for your health. Now, on yer bike... with a helmet!

But last week, a Senate inquiry heard that mandatory helmet laws may do more harm than good. The reason? Because they discourage people from cycling. Reduction in exercise leads to death from cardiovascular disease, like heart attack and

Photo thanks to TEDX Noosa

This year in May I was gifted the privilege of speaking at TEDxNoosa. I decided to tell the story about how my partner Pete and I met, fell in love over our mutual love of farming and decided to return to our roots and create our own farm business. We both grew up on farms, Pete in Kingaroy, Queensland and myself in wool country near Yass, NSW. We wanted to grow our own food, create a sustainable business on our land and bring up our family in a clean simple lifestyle… we wanted the Good Life! We had never run our own business, but we knew a lot of farmers and were aware of the pitfalls ahead. Farmers face the issues of climate change and products with a short shelf life. Farmers work in an untenable pricing structure, where supply chain sets a price regardless of costs, and we knew many farmers who’d ploughed crops back into the ground as the price on offer at the time of harvest did not cover the cost of picking. As I started writing my talk I saw an advertisement in the local paper for carrots priced at $1 per kg. In my adult memory carrots had always been $1 a kg, so I decided to go the library and look at advertisements from 25 years ago. In the first paper I looked through I found carrots advertised for 99c per kg (Noosa News from March 1990). I showed a slide of the two prices and heard the audience gasp. Low prices have resulted in low incomes for agribusiness. Pete and I researched what was being grown in the region. Here and all around the world farmers are growing meat: it offers slightly less risk and higher returns. Fruit and vegetable production is rapidly declining. However the biggest issue for

us was the use of chemicals in food production. Coming from a farming background we saw this a little differently. We see chemicals as the shortcuts farmers can use to grow cheap food. When you want low food prices, you are really encouraging shortcuts. We did not want to harm our environment or our family so we decided to grow organically - bypass the supply chain and grow a new commercial crop to allow us to develop our own market and sell direct. That’s how we decided to grow feijoas! I grew up with this delicious fruit so they were not new to me, but most people, including Pete, had never heard of them when we started. We didn’t know how to grow feijoas, but knew the alternatives didn’t work, so we decided we would learn along the way. We learnt so much more than we’d ever imagined: how to grow a new crop, how to market and use social media to connect with customers, how to run a business, and best of all we learnt how much we loved each other and working together outside on our farm. We also became aware of all the political debates and global issues raging around the world, like food security. World leaders are rightly worried about where our food will come from in the future. But out here at Belli Park we’re just sticking to our plan and loving the way our customers adopted our ideas. They were thrilled to be able to come out to our farm and collect their boxes of unsorted, imperfect but exquisite organic feijoas. Just like us they were connecting with their own roots and memories. We’ve made 15

Photo thanks to Alain Bouvier fantastic friends and receive so many hugs of gratitude that it makes me cry to see how happy everyone is! We now sell ALL our crop from our farm gate. Our community also adopted us, and in October 2014 we were sponsored by Slow Food Noosa to travel to Italy as Australian delegates at the Slow Food International Conference “Terra Madre”. We spoke to farmers from all corners of the earth. Everyone was so happy growing food, but everyone struggled to make a good living. In my talk I wanted to share the idea that cheap food costs too much. If we don’t start to place a higher value on our food choices, we will not have new farmers, we will not grow enough fruit and vegetables in this country, and we’ll be importing more and more. I also believe that the cost of cheap food is too high for our environment and our health. Imagine if we just said no to all chemicals in food … how much could we save in healthcare bills at the end of our lives? How much could our country save? How much cleaner would our waterways be? How much could we slow global warming with this one change? The day at TEDx was awesome, and making connections with the other speakers was one of the highlights. I had the chance to share the day with my 22 year old daughter Grace. Seeing her cry in pride when I was on stage was something I’ll never forget. Parents often cry in pride at their children’s accomplishments, but the role reversal of this occasion was an unexpected gem. Cont’d on page 18

This beautiful little bush inhabits wet forest and rainforest margins and is seldom noticed until the end of winter/early spring when its blue-mauve pea flowers totally cover the bush. The leaves are a lovely dark green on top, with a rusty, hairy underside. The seed pods follow the flowers and can be heard popping open when the weather warms up. It makes a lovely shrub for native gardens and does well in sun or part shade. With spring just around the corner, we will be seeing more and more beautiful flowers blooming, both native and exotic. Community Wild Dog Baiting Program September and October 2015

Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with Bio-security Queensland is supporting a community based coordinated Wild Dog Baiting Program. Failure to control wild dogs can result in livestock losses, attacks on domestic pets and the loss of native fauna. Landholders have a legislative responsibility to control declared pests on their land and participation in this program is an effective way to help meet this responsibility.

The recently reformed Friends of NBG have been actively raising funds, giving guided walks and undertaking garden maintenance for the past four years.

While we have a problem with funnel ants infesting our lawns, a bit further west in drier country, another species of ant is building a very different nest. They clear an area of all low vegetation and replace it with hundreds of small pebbles. Most of the pebbles are a dark colour which attract and retain the sun’s heat. Underneath this domed area they make subterranean nests, leaving a few holes for entry and exit. We came across one such site on a friend’s dried lawn. We remembered they were called Sugar Ants and that they don’t sting. So to get a close-up photo of the ants, we knelt on the nest site and weren’t worried about the hundreds that poured out of holes and crawled all over our legs. But back at home when we looked at our photos, we realised these were actually Southern Meat Ants. Fortunately they don’t sting either. They give mild bites and squirt formic acid at intruders but we didn’t notice any of that. We were careless but lucky! Southern Meat Ants, Iridomyrmex purpureus (meaning purple iridescent ant) are one of 63 species and sub-species in this genus found all over Australia in varied habitats. The ones we encountered prefer dry grasslands. Like many ant species, the nest contains a queen (sometimes two or three), a lot of workers and a minority of males. Those holes lead to underground chambers but surprisingly don’t connect so there can be several populations of the same species in one large nest. When the ants are disturbed and come streaming out of their holes, they mean business - both in attitude and numbers. There are many thousands (experts claim over 300,000) in a nest complex. Often there are ‘satellite’ nests of the species nearby, ‘tolerated’ by the main headquarters’ inhabitants and connected by clearly defined tracks.

A good part of their diet is secretions from plant matter and insects but as the name ‘meat ants’ indicates, they are fierce predators on other arthropods and small vertebrates. Because they are unaffected by cane toad toxin some researchers thought they might be a natural countermeasure. Tracks to their favourite hunting grounds are clearly defined, patrolled and defended along with their nest. Ants of different species are eliminated to the point that only night foraging species can exist within range of a nest (Iridomyrmex are strictly diurnal). However, if the trespassing ants are also Iridomyrmex purpureus from a different nest, non-lethal combat ensues. The opponents face each other and spar, raising their bodies and kicking with their hind legs. Very few casualties result but this ritualised combat can last for days - humans could learn from that!

Of course the ants also have predators. When an ant gets injured it gives off certain chemicals to warn other ants of danger. Some spiders recognise that scent and home in on these hapless victims. Certain beetles inhabit burrows near the ant nests and lunge out to ambush passing prey. In late spring, usually after rain, many recently matured queens emerge from the nest and take to the wing escorted by males in what is called ‘nuptial’ flight. After mating they begin a suitable nest and start their own brood. Complicated and fascinating creatures! 17

The Council keep the park tidy and give the place an annual ‘tick spray’ as well as supply the park with doggy bags and clean water. As you can see the dog park does have a lot of bare areas where the dogs are running around but it’s not an eyesore, in fact it was very pleasant sitting inside the a dog park, lots of trees and seating areas. There was a coffee van there today - plenty of people with their dogs - it was really pleasant watching the four-legged friends running around without leashes and people socialising.

Yes, l suppose there will be the occasional dog fight, but the small dog and large dog areas are ideal with separate gates. I believe from what l heard the dog park is a much valued asset to the community. You can’t really appreciate these places unless you make a visit. I’m sure if the Council was to visit they would be impressed.
