Notes Editor’s note ... We knew the acreage on Caplick Way opposite the school was pegged for development, but the change from secret forest into flattened land has been tough for a community of ‘tree huggers’ to watch – and hard to explain to the kids. I keep trying to visualise the site in three years; hundreds of natives with a few architecturally designed homes peaking through the green. Turn to page 7 for information. This weekend Eumundi will be transformed again – this time by the creative colour that is the Australian Body Art Carnival. Just quietly, I fancy myself as a master face painter, so love seeing artists stretch beyond the boundaries of my usual repertoire of cats, zombies, Spiderman and butterflies. I also enjoy seeing the look on the face of one of my daughter’s discarded dolls when I transform her into an artwork befitting the theme at All Dolled Up! Turn to page 9 for the festival lowdown.

Business ENDANGERED ANIMAL MARCH Pavillion Markets Manager Leanne Baxter and organisers Marie-Louise and Chris Sarjeant lead a Global March for elephants, rhinos and lions through Eumundi earlier this October. Organiser MarieLouise said, “We had many people this year, 80 plus and a huge response of clapping and cheering from tourists at the markets and many cars tooted their horns in support.” Marie-Louise explained her passion for the movement
The Eumundi
comes from knowing the horror that these majestic beasts endure as a result of ‘sport’. “It makes me cry [in] frustration at the cruelty of lion hunting - we must get South Africa to ban it,” she shared. “Canned Hunting is the term used for lions bred at factory farms just to be killed by tourists as trophies.” Marie-Louise said the killing of elephants and rhinos has also reached shocking levels. “We are proud to do this and many wonderful, passionate people came to support these poor animals,” she said. facebook.com/ events/332585223617574/

WORK BEGINS ON CAPLICK SITE Clearance of the privately owned five acres of land between Cook St and Caplick Way has commenced and dramatically changed the landscape in the township. Council made it a condition of the approved subdivision that all identified weed species on the site, such as Camphor Laurel and Slash Pine be removed. Unfortunately some of the old mango trees that were badly damaged by a house fire were advised to be in poor condition and also removed. A new curb and parking places will be put in on Caplick Way this week with a retaining wall to stabilise the bank and driveways and pavement to follow. All removed trees will be replanted with hundreds of natives by the
landowners soon, who plan to start building early next year. The site was originally planned to be subdivided into 14 blocks of residential lots but will now be divided into six lots on which only four will be built. The infrastructure work is scheduled to be completed by December 2015. Eumundi Green ran an article in issue 220 which you can still read online at issuu.com/ eumundigreen

The outing was part of the school’s curriculum to learn about Thai culture and to participate in the restaurant’s new cooking school. The students enjoyed learning to make spring rolls and Thai fried rice then had fun eating what they had just prepared. It was good to see the students participating and enjoying eating their own food. Upgrading North ArmYandina Creek Rd It was a good turnout at the public consultation meeting council held at North Arm State School regarding North Arm-Yandina Creek Rd. There was a fair bit of community interest in the bitumen sealing of this road and feedback on the night was extremely positive with unanimous support for the work to be done. One of the challenges for this project is the need to close the road for six weeks from 8 October until late November, which will minimise delays in construction and reduce the overall construction time. I appreciate the alternative route will be an inconvenience but your patience while the road is closed would be appreciated. Fast facts about this project: • 2km of the road will be bitumen sealed – it will link Valdora Road to the existing bitumen to the west (toward Hidden Valley Road). • The sealed road will consist
of two 3.3m wide road lanes with 650mm sealed shoulders on both sides. • This project will continue through the 2015-16 financial year, with completion expected in May next year. Body Art Brilliance This year’s Australian Body Art Festival is promising to be one of the most exciting events for the Sunshine Coast. The two day Eumundi festival will attract some of the world’s best artists and showcase everything great about Eumundi and its nearby neighbours. The Local Colour exhibition by Carole Roberts, Meg Woods and Jenni Radke, will run from 17 October to 8 November at Wan’din’in Arts Space, behind Discover Eumundi. This will be the first of a series of exhibitions by local artists, who were successful in applying with expressions of interest to use the space. Each artist’s work depicts the colours of our region in different ways. Hinterland artist Jenni Radke said, “A walk through Eumundi Conservation Park emphasises the grandeur of trees as living beings. Forests create ‘nature’s cathedral’ and historically inspired the design of great Gothic cathedrals. They provide a sense of clearheaded calmness essential for wellbeing.”
this area has such a brightness that it appears to shimmer with a glowing white radiance. With a view of Mt Ninderry from her studio, Meg Woods is fascinated by the influence of the changing light and weather on the aspect of the mountain. Mt Eerwah and Mt Cooroy make up a triangle of local volcanic mythical mountains. Discover Eumundi is open 7 days. 5442 8762
Carole Roberts’ new work draws from the natural beauty and light of the sky, ocean and bush landscapes around Peregian Beach. She notes that the sky in Artist Meg Woods captures her view of Mount Ninderry from her home.

Living A FA I R F O O D M O V E M E N T C H A N G I N G T H E W O R L D Sally Hookey, Hinterland Feijoa farmer Fair Food is a book of honest, heartfelt stories written by a group of unlikely activists working right now to make a difference in their world through simply changing the way our food is produced. Their common ground is that they all believe in the power of fair food to change so many of our cultural, environmental and health issues. This is also the story of how the social movement the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance (AFSA) was formed in 2010, bringing together the many angels and organisations already working to make a difference throughout Australia. AFSA has released a documentary entitled Fair Food, organised Fair Food Weeks, and most importantly written a People Food Plan in response to the Gillard Government’s National Food Plan. I loved this book. Of course this is my tribe and reflects my values and my love of food. I know some of the contributors personally and can identify with
each and every one of these wonderful people, but I’m still surprised by the complete lack of common sense that has allowed our food to become a political weapon instead of sustaining us. My favourite phrase at the moment is that we are at the “Cutting Edge of Common Sense” and I can see the beautiful groundswell of change happening all around me. It’s exciting to know that there are so many people questioning the big business of food and where it has taken us. The story tellers in this book have come from a wide background, including political careers, academics, old and new-time farmers, and homemakers who have all had some sort of tragedy, lightbulb moment or convergence of light bulbs that caused them to question the everyday and make changes in their own lives. Change organically connects you to like-thinkers. All have realised that change will not happen from the top down, that

“Australia’s Food system is more than just broken: it’s killing us. Now is the time to act, to make a difference – to change the world.” This message on the back cover of Fair Food might sound a little scary, but it doesn’t take much research into our ailing food system to understand how true it
is. I would recommend this book to anyone. It’s topical, thought provoking, honest, unsettling, but positive about our ability to make a difference today. One contributor even mentions Tony Abbott … who? Thank you for your work Nick Rose.

Iggy Lucas, Year 2, ESS Ignite English On a rainy day last February, mum told us we were going somewhere special. My brother and I jumped in the car in excitement. We thought we were going to a theme park but we ended up going to the RSPCA. We looked at all the animals there, before we saw the one that we wanted. Black and white with blue spots, she was staring out at us and jumping up on to the cage. As soon as I saw her happy hazel eyes, I wanted to take her home. She was taken out of the cage. I felt a wet, slobbery tongue lick my face. It was a nice, but kind of gross feeling. I patted the hairy, sooky creature. It licked me back. “This is the one!” I begged my mum. I already loved Billie. At home Billie chases the chooks, runs around like a Tasmanian Devil and messes up the house.
She always asks for cuddles but sometimes she can be helpful being a guard dog. Our mailman is very clever and comes prepared for dog attacks. Billie loves his doggy treats. Billie is a cattle dog crossed with a red heeler. Her favourite food is tuna. In September, Billie was bitten by a paralysis tick. Both of her back legs were paralysed. Sport R I D I N G H I G H AT T H E E U M U N D I A G S H O W Leo Wiles The annual Eumundi Agricultural Show may be smaller than its Nambour and Noosa Show cousins but for 160 attendants from the equine set (who paid their gold coin admittance for local charity), that’s a large part of its appeal. This year’s ring-steward and announcer, Julie Templeton explained, “Because it is a quiet show, [no noisy sideshows], it gives beginner riders and horses a chance to have a good experience without all the scary stuff they usually have.” While parents are happy to bring their first time competitors and green horses out, the show also provides riding royalty a chance to put themselves and their horses through their paces for the upcoming QLD Show Horse Hack of the Year. “There is always a very high standard of horses and riders at Eumundi in all the events including the main events such as the Grand Champion led breed class, Grand Champion Hack and Grand Champion Hunter Hack” Julie said “Being the last show for the year, they are very practised by then - also the QLD Show Horse Hack of the year is the following weekend, so they are practising for that.” Judges Suellen Brooke, Jane Clifford and Kylee Chandler awarded Ruby Baxter and her Champion Large Saddle Pony KD ‘Pinkie’ Park Perfection Grand Champion Hack on the day. “I was very proud to win supreme - especially with a pony because usually the bigger horses win but I was also extremely happy because Pinkie put her best foot forward,” Ruby shared. Pinkie was also the Australian champion at this year’s Grand Nationals. Ruby said, “I love Eumundi show
because adults can ride ponies and not many shows in QLD allow that.” Cheerful volunteers served sandwiches and burgers from the canteen hatch at the old Sunny Brae hospital and on display upstairs were; prize winning jam drops and scones, home grown plants, beautifully knitted and crocheted crafts, and the artwork of Eumundi State School children. the better. Put those plans into action. Spring is the time to let go of your fears and just go for it!
Do you need to make some changes in your life? Have you been thinking about changing things but you haven’t quite had the impetus? Well spring is finally here and it is time to take the leap and just do it! In Oriental Medicine spring is all about the energy of change, expansion and putting all those plans into action. Over winter we used introspection to work out what no longer served us and what we needed to let go of, we also contemplated where we would like to be in the future. Well it is time to get your future on and use the energy of spring to drive change in your life for
Want to learn something new? You always benefit from study!! Go for that career change or just learn for the sake of it, isn’t that what life is about?! Universities like applications to be in by the end of October – so apply for that course you have always wanted to do. Do a class locally - how about ballroom dancing at Templeton’s Dance studio, or yoga at the Yoga Temple, an art class or finally learn to surf? Need to exercise? The weather is warming up, get your walking shoes on, pick up a second hand bike and ride along the river, go for a swim, climb one of the Sunny Coast’s glorious mountains, start yoga. Eumundi has some great exercise classes at the amphitheatre on Tuesday and Friday mornings (6 & 9am) and boxing on Thursdays (6am). Make exercise part of your routine, your body (and mind) will thank you for it!
Be Kind. Spring is associated emotionally with anger and frustration and you may notice these feelings arising more at this time of year. Try to use them to your advantage, anger can be a great driver of change. When we recognise what is wrong in our world it can push us to create the change that we want to see and help us create shifts, not just in our own lives but also at a social and humanitarian level. Focusing on kindness can be a great way to deal with frustration and annoyance at others. We don’t always have insight into other people’s
journeys and with spring being focused on growth and development, think about what you can learn from this person. The more lessons we take from life the wiser we become. Also … Book in some me time! Be kind to yourself, take some time out to nourish yourself, convene with nature, enjoy some peace, book that “me” time into your diary. It will help you feel balanced through the dynamic growth and change of spring. doublehappiness.net.au

Gooseberry and strawberry pie Annie Wilson When I was a child, my grandmother had a gooseberry bush growing alongside her fence. I was intrigued by the tart little fruit in pretty little cases and spent many hours foraging for the treasured fruits. Now I have my own gooseberry bush bursting with fruit and these delightful fruits star in this delicious pie. Teamed with sensational Eumundi Strawberries, the tiny globes burst tartly in your mouth to provide the perfect foil for the sweet strawberries. Now the mulberries are ripening, we might try a gooseberry and mulberry combo next! Ingredients Pastry • 1 large egg, separated, at room temperature • 225g soft unsalted butter • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 50g caster sugar • ½ tsp salt • 350g plain flour, plus extra for dusting • Extra-thick cream, cold, to serve Filling • 500g ripe strawberries, halved, or quartered if large • 500g gooseberries, washed • 100g golden caster sugar, plus an extra 1 tblsp • 1 tsp of cinnamon • 2 tblsp of semolina or ground almonds Method 1. Put the egg yolk, butter, vanilla, sugar and salt in a food processor and pulse until creamy and soft. Add the flour and pulse until the mixture 15
comes together in clumps be careful not to overwork it. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and massage the dough together. Divide into two pieces, one slightly larger than the other, then shape into smooth discs. Wrap in cling wrap and chill for 30 minutes. If you aren’t keen on making pastry from scratch, you can purchase ready-made sweet short pastry - but it’s worth the extra investment of time to make your own if you can manage it 2. Meanwhile, make the filling. Put the berries and sugar in a wide pan and cook for five minutes until syrupy and the gooseberries are soft but not bursting. Drain in a colander over a bowl and leave to cool. Mix the cinnamon and extra sugar together and set aside 3. Heat oven to 200C (180C fan forced). Roll out the larger piece of pastry to about 2-3mm thick and place in a greased 23cm tart tin. Prick the base several times with a fork, chill until firm, then line with

foil and fill with baking beads (or dry rice). Bake on a baking sheet for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and beads and bake for a further 10 minutes or until the bottom of the pastry is golden and feels sandy. Roll the second pastry disc to roughly the size of the tart and cut into 5cm squares 4. Scatter the semolina or almonds over the pastry base (this will help to prevent the bottom getting soggy). Top with the fruit and drizzle with 2 tblsp of the fruit syrup. Space the pastry squares over the tart and brush with egg white, then scatter the pie with most of the reserved cinnamon sugar. Wrap the edge of the pie with a collar of foil to protect it from overcooking, and bake for 30 minutes or until golden and crisp. Scatter with more spiced sugar and serve warm with thick cream and the fruity syrup in a jug for pouring. It’s also delicious served with custard. fabfreshfood.com.au

Pigs as pets It seems that everyone loves a pig and they always get the most attention by visitors on my farm. I currently own five pigs all of which know their name and provide much entertainment. Apart from the fun side of having pigs as pets, there are many other aspects that need to be considered before buying your cute little “oinker”. Teacup Pigs You need to be aware that in Australia there are no teacup pigs or true miniature pigs such as the Pot-Bellied pig and the Kune Kune. This means that any pig younger than three years of age has the potential to become rather large and extremely strong. When I say large, I mean they could grow to 300 kilos! Many breeders sell “miniature” pigs as they have bred small framed sows and boars over generations. Even though the pig may have small parents it does not necessarily mean it will be as small when it is fully mature at three years of age. Diet plays a huge role in managing the weight of a pig. Housing Pigs need a fair amount of space to roam (e.g. an acre), forage for roots and get exercise. They need: shade as they easily get sunburnt, some form of a mud bath or shallow pool and a draught-free night house with straw or blankets for bedding. They feel the cold and can become ill from draughts. Fencing can be challenging when it comes to containing pigs. The best solution is chain fencing concreted into the ground at a minimum of one metre high. As they are intelligent creatures they can get bored and then become destructive so being creative with toys and food games is good for their wellbeing.
Feeding You can buy a commercial mix which contains all of the correct nutrients but it will make the piglet gain weight quickly. Here is an example of my pigs’ diet (amounts vary based on the age): Breakfast: barley flakes, pony pellets, sorghum & kelp meal (and milk for piglets) Lunch: grass or lucerne hay (free access to grass all day will make the pig gain weight quickly) Dinner: kale, apple, pumpkin Care Pigs need regular worming and I add this to their water or breakfast as holding a 100kg pig for medication is not an easy task. Ideally once a year they need their trotters trimmed and getting this done by a professional is the safest way for you and your pig. I add natural supplements to all of my animal’s diets so try kelp meal, garlic and dolomite for good health. If you are well prepared for the arrival of your pig then it will be an amazing experience and you will form a close bond with your new pet. Pigs love human company and tummy tickles, scratching, walks, hide ‘n’ seek, car rides (in a seatbelt of course) and treat time. If you can provide a suitable environment with strong fencing and provide good nutrition then it may be time to start looking for a good local breeder. citychicks.com.au Note: Check with your Council and DAFF before investing in a pig as certain regulations are in place for housing all livestock such as pigs. 16
In last month’s article [issue 228], I wrote about the importance of healthy soil as the basis of a healthy garden. I’d like to continue the theme in this issue, by describing some techniques that I have found to work for me in building and maintaining fertility in my gardens. As a long-time biodynamic gardener, my first port of call to build fertility is using the BD preparations, however there are a number of preliminary steps in establishing a garden which will enhance their effectiveness. 1. Observe your soil type: Is it very light and sandy? If so, nutrients will be rapidly leached through it, so it will require lots of compost initially and probably a regime of foliar liquid fertiliser such as seaweed, fish, cow manure and worm juice. As the organic matter and humus builds in the soil over a period of time, the water and nutrient holding capacity will increase and the need for intensive foliar feeding will decrease. Is it tight and compacted? As mentioned last time, healthy soil needs to breathe, so the soil will need to be loosened and organic matter incorporated, preferably in the form of good compost. Use a garden fork to dig the soil, rather than a shovel. 2. Observe your existing plants: Are they lush and thriving? If so, your soil is obviously in good shape and will only need a little additional fertilising. Are they lacking in vigour and a bit stunted? If so, they are obviously hungry and lacking in nutrients. Adequate supplies of calcium are key to plant nutrition, so if there is an overall yellowing of the plants and you haven’t added lime to the garden for a while, it’s a sure bet the plants are calling out for some calcium. There are three commonly available forms of calcium for the garden; agricultural lime, dolomite and gypsum. 3. Test your soil pH: This is a test of the soil’s acidity or alkalinity. The majority of our vegetables and flowers are happiest growing in a neutral or slightly acidic soil, with a pH of between 5.5 and 7 (neutral). Too much deviation from this range in either direction will inhibit
{ T H E G R E E N 14 October 2015

the plant’s uptake of nutrients from the soil. Test kits are easy to use, inexpensive and readily available from garden shops, hardwares, etc. The pH test will also tell you the best form of calcium to use for your soil type. In my experience of gardening in acidic soils (pH 6 or lower) here in south-east Queensland, I have had better results using agricultural lime (calcium carbonate) rather than dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate) as the soil magnesium levels have been adequate. Both of these products will raise the soil pH, so if your pH is above 6, I would recommend using gypsum (calcium sulphate), which does not alter the pH. Gypsum has the additional property of opening up heavy soils and is generally recommended as a clay breaker. To be continued next month. Happy gardening.

Outdoors M O R E A C T I V E M E M B E R S WA N T E D ! N ews f rom the W ildli f e C entre Baby birds The spring and summer months are always hectic at the Rehabilitation centre. The bird nesting season is in full swing and often baby birds are brought to the Centre. So far so good – BUT, some of the birds brought to the Centre had not been abandoned by their parents at all … in fact they were kidnapped by well-meaning people. Some bird varieties such as plovers, ducks and swamphens hatch from their shells very well advanced. They have their eyes open, can walk, even run and are usually covered in fluffy down. They are called Precocial Chicks. These chicks are often “parked” in a safe place whilst their parents search for food. Some, such as ducklings, accompany their parents on food searching expeditions on lakes and dams and can feed themselves. Brush turkey chicks hatch from their mounds and are totally independent right from the start and can even fly up to a safe tree branch at dusk. Other chicks such as honeyeaters, magpies, parrots, pigeons/doves and tawny frogmouths are called Altricial
Duncan Sayers, 1st Officer Eumundi RFB Helen Hepburn
Chicks. They are born with their eyes closed, little or no down/feathers and are totally dependent on their parents for the first weeks or even months of their lives. Many of the magpies brought to the Centre have NOT been abandoned by their parents even though they look quite scruffy especially when they are moulting. Please be observant before you rush to help what at first glance seems a lost chick. Most birds don’t just abandon their chicks but storms can blow nests or nestlings out of trees. Occasionally excess babies are left if available food supplies dry up during drought. If this is the case, then the weakest or smallest is the first to go! When is it appropriate to intervene? • Cannot be returned to their nest (too high and chicks are very cold) • Have been injured or caught by cats or dogs • Dead parents nearby • Haven’t been able to locate either parent by the end of the day If you are satisfied that the baby bird(s) is in trouble, please place the chick on an old towel and place in a box with air vents punched in and bring to the Centre ASAP. Please do not give any food or water. A phone call to the Centre is also a good idea as Gill or staff can help you with decision making.
Your local fire brigade has been busy over the last couple of months. With rainfall keeping the landscape green we fortunately haven’t had many emergency callouts, but the brigade has been actively training to keep skills fresh. This highlights the dilemma for any emergency service – we really hope to never encounter the situations we train for, and yet we must keep motivated for when inevitably we do! Fortunately, bushfire fighting isn’t just about putting wet stuff on hot stuff. We have had a number of diverse training opportunities lately; chainsaw training, 4WD driver training, and hazard reduction burns with National Parks and other landholders – and we had a great catch-up over pizzas and beers. So there’s plenty to keep us entertained!
but are looking for more to sustain the brigade and bring a diversity of ideas and experience. Active community organisations are what sustain great, small towns like ours. Bushfires don’t go out by magic, flooding houses don’t get sandbagged on their own, elves don’t deliver the Green, sausages don’t flip themselves for a fundraiser – our local volunteers do all of that and more. Please come along to one of our training nights (First and third Tuesday of each month at 7pm), find out what we do, and let’s see if we can inspire you too. 0402 321 526
Our greatest challenge seems to be attracting new volunteers for when the fire season gets into full swing. We have a great band of active members,

Letters CASH ROAD SUBDIVISION Because the subdivision proposed on Cash Road is impact-assessable, due to its proximity to the creek, the community can have their say. But we have to act quickly if we want to ensure that this subdivision does not harm an ecologically sensitive area, wildlife corridor and important waterway. The subdivision proposes to chop up a ten-acre block into four small house blocks, which will threaten the waterway, its resident wildlife and rare Notophyll subtropical vine forest. In Queensland, we need to protect what little natural flora and fauna we have left. If our state were a country, in 2000 it would have rated as one of the most de-forested countries in the world, “up there with the Congo, Brazil and Indonesia” (The Wilderness Society 2015). We need your help to argue for the forest, the creek and the animals that live here. Any comments or objections regarding the proposed subdivision must contain your name and address, as well as the Application number: REC13/0111 and your signature. You can make a submission by email: mail@sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au; or send it to the SC

MYSTERY ANIMAL SPOTTED IN DOONAN
A lady acquaintance recently told me of a creature she saw just off the Eumundi-Noosa Road down in Doonan near Lenehan’s Lane. It was late at night but in the headlights she clearly saw a very large cat-like animal which glared at her before “bounding” off the road. This sighting in turn reminded me that a year earlier a Verrierdale mother and her teenage daughter were driving home late at night very near Lenehan’s Lane and saw what they described as a large cat, with a characteristic long, curved cat’s tail. This creature also looked at them then bounded off the road into the vegetation. Both of them saw it, looked at one another and said, “can you see what I’m seeing?” Both felt a little “spooked” by the encounter. It is interesting that the two sightings happened
at the same place, all three ladies thought it was a large cat – panther-size and used the word “bounded” which is not usually used for dogs but describes the motion of cats and kangaroos. But all are sure that what they were looking at was not a kangaroo or wallaby. So, do we have our own mystery animal roaming around Doonan? Perhaps we have a Tasmanian Tiger presumed extinct since 1936. These included a large head with strong jaws, a kangaroolike tail and stripes. Sunshine Coast has reports of sightings, usually just short glimpses and going back to the 1800s - of creatures resembling large cats, usually black. Of course no one has a camera handy and it would be of limited use at night. But many property owners and Council wild-life officers have installed infrared and motion detecting cameras and so far none have captured footage of anything unusual. There are also a lot of dogs about which would surely raise the alarm if a big cat entered their property. It would be very interesting to find out if any other residents have seen (or thought they saw) an unusual animal in our region? Kon Hepers, Verrierdale. If you’d like to report a strange sighting to Kon please email editor@eumundigreen. com.au and we’ll pass it on.
