Notes Editor’s note ... I can pretty much gauge where this community’s interests lay by which areas of the Green have the most content, photos and articles – and in this issue the Outdoors, Health and Living, and Sport pages are bursting out of their sections. Spring is stunning in our hinterland and we’re taking advantage of it! There’s nothing better than finishing a sultry day with a swim in the pool, a splash in the ocean, sitting on the veranda in the cool afternoon breeze with a cold drink, watching the birds and taking in a breathtaking view – then having a tropical thunderstorm cool everything down! The beautiful reader’s photos are capturing our lifestyle and loves perfectly. Thank you for sending them in; such a treat to receive an email with your photos attached. Enjoy our spring and see you poolside reading the Green!

Loving some street art.

All over the world street art (aka Graffiti) is becoming an important addition to the arts fabric of many towns, as part of a varied arts pallette. And now, thanks to the driving force of locals such as Karen Bracher of the new Genrator Gallery, we are seeing vistas of street art, as curated by Karen, now popping up around Eumundi - not only at the Generator, but in places such as the Artisan Gallery and the Imperial Hotel... and just recently, to celebrate the Australian Body Art Festival, a new and distinctive piece was painted on the wall of or SPS Energy at the Southern entry to town. “Generator Gallery has been working with street and graffiti artists for many years on various projects and the time had come to share their exciting, eclectic blend of contemporary art to a wider audience,” says Karen.

We salute your time in assisting to make the carparks run smoothly and putting a smile on the faces of our visitors from far and wide.

Another interesting and exciting addition to Eumundi’s artsisan heritage.

Council has recently fielded a few complaints about the clearing works on the corner of Caplick Way and Cook St. This is a subdivision that was ticked and approved by the former Maroochy Council. I’ve investigated and have been informed that none of the vegetation removed was native only introduced species, predominately Slash Pines. Whilst I completely understand community sentiment when it comes to removal of trees, I’d like to reassure everyone that these works will provide plenty of positives. There will be more carparking spaces for the school as well as safer access to and from school for families that park on that side of the street through the construction of a pedestrian pathway as part of the development behind the new car parking area. Body Art Festival There was even more colour than usual in Eumundi last weekend when the Australian Body Art Festival came to town. This terrific event included workshops, competitions and internationally renowned Australian artist Emma Hack. A big congratulations to Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher who did a fantastic job coordinating this event in an extremely professional manner. Eumundi Range Road Bridge Together with Cr Robinson, I’ve had some detailed discussions

with council staff about the heritage look and feel of new Eumundi Range Rd bridge. This unique project has come about at the request of local community groups, who wanted a point of difference with this new bridge and something that provided a striking entry statement to Eumundi. The new bridge will include exposed aggregate footpath finishes, ‘bespoke’ fungal orange balustrading uprights with timber longitudinal top rails and rock faced end plinths, for the pedestrian pathway. Recycled bridge timbers will be used for the gazebo shelter, adjacent to and south of the bridge as well as welcome to Eumundi entry sign reflecting the historic construction technique employed in the original bridge. This entry signage will be erected on the western side of the Eumundi Range Rd and to the North of the bridge. Car Parking I’m aware of the ongoing concerns and problems that people are encountering in Eumundi with regards to the misleading nature of car parking signage. Whilst Council is required to install the national-standard signage, I’m very much aware that the terminology on these signs can be confusing. Rest assured I’m committed to working towards a solution to these ongoing problems that will provide greater clarity.

Books EYE OF SOFIE LAGUNA Sofie Laguna’s The Eye of the Sheep (winner of the 2015 Miles Franklin Literary Award) is the story of a struggling working class Australian family torn apart by the pressures of a “difficult” child, alcoholism and violence. It is beautifully written as you would expect from a Franklin winner, but Laguna reaches the extraordinary in her creation of Jimmy, the youngest son, whose voice illuminates and drives this story. His unique insights, made all the more powerful because Jimmy is never diagnosed, pinned down as a list of mental symptoms in need of a classification, but free to roam in our minds throughout this remarkable novel. Likewise, the stereotypes of violent father and saintly mother get a bit blurred at the edges through his view point. He sees and understands his mother’s need and his father’s repulsion to it and where it leads. The heartbreak is that he needs both. Here he describes his father’s relationship to the scotch bottle with a ship on its side,

Judith Pattison

“The weight of the Cutty Sark blocked the valves that led to Paula. Dad tried to clear the blockages with his hands and that’s what left Paula with the bruises. But if he didn’t drink the Cutty Sark, the valves inside pressed against his heart and other vitals, carrying the past through his bloodstream. The pressure built like the boiling water in the refinery pipes that led to steam and flame. It wasn’t bearable.” Another major influence on the family is the industrial suburb of Victoria where they live. The only work available to his father is demeaning, dangerous, insecure and eventually life destroying work in a refinery. It also becomes clear that there is very little outside support for this desperate family, either for Jimmy’s special needs, his father’s drinking, or the violence he inflicts on the others. In spite of all this, Sofie Laguna manages to create a powerful and positive story. Absolutely worth the read.

Sacha Hamilton-MacLaren Very excited and nervous Eumundi State School children from grades one to three began their summer swimming program at Eumundi’s Aquatic Centre on Memorial Dr last week. New manager Adrian Williams quickly became the kid’s favourite instructor, with the youngsters enjoying his fun and professional teaching style. Parents commented that the

classes were well organised and the parental help in the pool was welcomed. Adrian moved from Maryborough recently and took over the reigns at the Centre last month. Among his coaching acheivements Adrian’s proud to say he coached Olympic champion Jodie Henry. This month, the Aquatic Centre’s Thursday night swim club also started back for the summer. The club improves kid’s swimming and helps prepare them for carnivals while still having fun. Afterschool learn-to-swim classes are also available 5442 7186.

We’ve really been looking forward to our Show Grounds becoming available as it’s a great venue and we’re proud to be a Eumundi line up that’s supported by a local business, The Imperial Hotel. For those who enjoy cricket and the excitement of the short game, you won’t be disappointed. Bring the kids, a picnic blanket and some camp chairs. The canteen will be operating with refreshments. Your Mum’s Undies will hit the field at 12.15pm against team 6 & Out. The boys would love some home town support. The team previously called the grounds at Yandina home. Eumundi’s T-20 cricket team, Your Mum’s Undies, will be playing their first competitive match on home turf at the Eumundi Show Grounds. The local lads will host three matches this Sunday 1 November, from 10am. The modified rules format is known as Last Man Standing & has over 30,000 players competing worldwide.

Health SNEEZIN’ SEASON

Tania Watson, Pharmacist due to a reaction to pollen. Most of us are sensitised to the many different pollen species, however the most troublesome pollens tend to be the tiny, hardly visible pollens of wind pollinating plants such as the northern hemisphere grasses, trees and flowering weed species. These include improved pasture grasses, Patterson’s Curse, Parthenium weed, ragweed and trees such as the olive tree. Photo: Wendy Birrell

For those of us who suffer from hay fever (or allergic rhinitis) the symptoms are all too familiar. They can include itchy, watery eyes, sneezing and a constantly irritated and dripping nose. These symptoms are caused by an allergic reaction in the inner linings of the nose. Allergic rhinitis is one of the most common respiratory conditions affecting Australians, with around 15% of the population affected and it is more

common in females than males. Conditions that commonly occur alongside allergic rhinitis include asthma, chronic sinusitis, middle ear infections and a decreased quality of sleep. The most common triggers of allergic rhinitis are pollen, house dust, animal fur (or dander), fungal spores, air pollutants and occupational sources. Spring is often the time many of us experience this condition and this is generally

The Weatherzone Pollen Index measures the potential for pollen to trigger allergic reactions in susceptible people. Pollen levels in the atmosphere will be highest on hot days and on days where a dry wind is blowing. Additionally, light rain overnight or during the early morning will also cause high pollen levels. It is on these days that you may experience the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. For individuals who suffer from hay fever, the treatment goal is to manage the symptoms of the condition. These may

include avoiding allergens, pharmacological treatments such as antihistamines or intranasal corticosteroids, nonmedicated treatments such as saline sprays or douches and sensitisation therapy. What are some tips to avoid allergies around the house? • Clean surfaces regularly to avoid the accumulation of dust. • Avoid feather and down pillows. • Don’t hang sheets or clothing outside to dry on days of high pollen count. • Avoid high pile carpets, as they offer places for dust and allergens to hide. • Keep your pet away from bedrooms and off all furniture. • Wash your pet weekly. • Try to stay indoors on days of high pollen count. • Avoid mowing lawns or wear a mask if it is unavoidable.

Health SNAKES AND LADDERS

health news

Dr Jo Deverill, Nambour General Hospital Emergency Medicine Staff Specialist I have been visiting my parents and spent yesterday evening rummaging through cupboards trying to find my old Snakes and Ladders board game. My four year old boy would love it, and it would help him learn addition and subtraction too. Even better, unlike an iPad, it doesn’t need charging. By coincidence, snakes and ladders were the two topics that came up when I asked one of my most senior colleagues in emergency medicine for his advice on good material for public information. As well as being an emergency doctor he’s a herpetologist, which means an expert on snakes. He loves them and I agree that they are beautiful creatures, much maligned. When did someone actually say something nice about a snake? From the Garden of Eden to the Jungle Book, they are universally damned. When we see them in the emergency department, they have usually been decapitated and presented in a bucket alongside a worried patient. You

might have thought that this would be a useful manoeuvre but it’s not. The majority of bites are sustained when people try to kill snakes, or pick them up. The snakes are just trying to defend themselves and they are pretty good at this. Furthermore we’ve had several occasions where relatives have presented the mashed up remains of nonvenomous species like carpet pythons. As well as being daft, this is against the law as they are all protected species. We don’t use snakes - alive or dead - for identification purposes. This is done with a venom detection kit (VDK) which is more accurate. When combined with blood tests, the VDK tells us whether the patient has been envenomed, and if so, which antiserum to give.

want it removed from your yard, call a licensed snake catcher. If you are bitten, don’t move and get someone to call an ambulance. Please don’t wash the bite site: it can interfere with the VDK. Finally prevention is better than cure: when you are in snake territory, wear closed shoes. This applies at night too. Which leaves me only a short space for ladders. If you are going up an extension ladder, get someone to hold the base. Obvious really. Never roll the dice with snakes and ladders. Unless you are four years old and they have come out of granddad’s cupboard.

So if you see a snake, leave it alone. If you

My philosophy: Feed your body with nourishing, organic and fresh wholesome food to feel alive and energised; educate yourself, your family and your community to a healthier lifestyle; share food with the people you love. Not every diet is perfect for every body - it’s whatever works for you! For me there are five ingredients I can’t live without: coconut oil, chia seeds, raw cacao, activated nuts and seeds and organic spelt liquorice (my weakness). And I do love a good Acai bowl. I was born in Denmark so my Danish heritage is important to me but since I have lived in Australia, almost half of my life, I have definitely adapted to the laid back lifestyle here. Line the tart tin with baking paper and carefully roll the pastry around the rolling pin to make it easy to transfer across. bRIDGE STILL TOO RICKETY Eumundi’s new rickety bridge playground equipment, crafted by the talented local Cooroora Woodworkers, is still awaiting final playground equipment council compliance. ECCO General Manager Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher explained, “Due to the rickety bridge being a unique installation, there have been a number of modifications required to meet required

safety standards,” Anthony said, “ECCO has been working with both Council and the certifiers to modify the equipment to meet standards, but unfortunately as fabrication takes place off site, it has taken longer than hoped.” Anthony assured the rickety bridge would be have a proper party just as soon as compliance was given.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Vegetation fires can be categorised in terms of the fuel in which they are burning. A Ground Fire can occur in any conditions and where organic matter, tree roots or other materials ignite and burn under the ground. Ground fires occur in only a few parts of Australia. A Surface Fire is a low to high intensity fire that burns on the surface of the ground. The tree canopy may be scorched by this fire but it does not burn to the extent that it will carry a fire.

{ T H E G R E E N 28 October 2015

A Crown Fire occurs during fires of extreme intensity. A crown fire burns through the crown or canopy of trees and where the canopy is continuous, fires can spread incredibly quickly. Crown fires are difficult to extinguish and are very dangerous. #bushfiresafe

N atu re N otes MAGPIE GEESE

Kon Hepers

Ducks, swans and geese might appear to be different in size, shape, colour and behaviour but they are all just ducks anatomically, in the bird family Anatidae. There is one exception – the Magpie Goose. This species is almost a living fossil having evolved from a common ancestor before the modern ducks. A few million years earlier and they would have been on the menu for dinosaurs. Their scientific name is Anseranas semipalmata. The genus name shows that they are distantly related to other geese and the species name semipalmata refers to their feet which are only half webbed, unlike all the other ducks/ geese. They really do look like large ducks but have a few distinguishing characteristics. Also unlike other waterfowl, but like most other birds, they do not moult their flightfeathers in one go but lose them one at a time, meaning that there is no time when they are not ready for flight. Very important in a prey species. Like so many of our native birds Magpie Geese are black and white with a black edge on the underwing. Males have a distinct knob on the head and in both genders have long, slender necks (like swans), toes with long claws and a hook at the end of the beak. Those half-webbed feet are really noticeable. Their lifestyle is interesting: they mate for life but usually every male has two females. He builds the nest, usually on

trampled down reeds or other aquatic plants, occasionally in trees. The females lay anywhere up to 16 eggs, then all three share the incubation and feeding duties. This again shows that they are different to other waterfowl – they are the only waterfowl to feed their young. The diet consists of aquatic plants, grains like wild rice, grasses, seeds etc. The hooks on their beaks allow them to harvest water chestnuts and other submerged bulbs. The most usual habitat is floodplains, wet grasslands, wet pastures and at times the close vicinity of large lakes. We have all seen pictures of those huge flocks in Kakadu numbering tens of thousands of birds. Their breeding range is northern Australia and southern New Guinea but the overall range covers most of the Queensland and NSW coast with scattered populations in small areas of Vic and SA. At one time these populations were quite extensive but were depleted through draining of wetlands, overhunting and even poisoning to reclaim marginal pastures. The birds were reintroduced in some southern states to build up numbers for hunting purposes. A Magpie Goose can live to 32 years of age but not when facing some hero with a shot gun. Locally, a few years ago we used to see small flocks of up to a dozen birds on the land where the small abattoir used to be, but not lately. We see the occasional pair up at Lake Macdonald but there must still be some flocks in the area. Residents underneath their flightpath hear their ‘honking’ and the rustle of their wingbeats as they pass overhead in late evenings.
