Notes Editor’s note ... Happy New Year hinterlanders! In this, our first issue for 2016, we celebrate our summer, ease into another year and enjoy our incredible lifestyle. Its little wonder so many people spend their summer visiting our region – and we have the pleasure of living here all year round. We have a special guest star designer this issue while Lil is on holidays. Rach has done an amazing job - it’s a credit to both designers how smoothly this issue came together.

A HINTERLAND MOMENT

The Green survey is still running until the end of the month. Please give us your feedback – it’ll only take a few minutes (unless you have heaps of feedback). This magazine is one-of-akind: pulled together and distributed by part timers and volunteers for our community by our community.

Just Love Eumundi!

Did you light up Eumundi at Xmas time? What a wonderful Christmas we have just enjoyed. Not only smashing weather, but also fantastic nights and days in Eumundi, and including the fantastic Eumundi Lights up Night Markets this year. Caplick Park was another enchanted wonderland with lots of fun for young and old as a respite to some frivolity and serious markets fun at Parkside and Original Eumundi Markets along with the shops, pubs and restaurants in town enjoying the record crowds. Oh and a fabulous laser light show courtesy of Bruno Kempler! More please.

2016 - the year we see the rejuvenation of the Terraces

For a number of years, the area of the Wednesday and Saturday markets abutting the amphitheatre known as the Terraces has been in desperate need of an upgrade for safety and enhanced community amenity. Whilst we know that it is important that Eumundi retains a multifaceted lifestyle benefit for all... marketeers, businesses, residents… our world famous markets are the biggest economic and employment driver for our town and it is important that we work productively with all stakeholders to make sure that the Eumundi markets are safe, fun, productive and profitable. To this end ECCO has been working with our members; EDCA and EHA as well as the Sunshine Coast Council in facilitating a long term upgrade to the Terraces that will be not only be architectually pleasing on market days and non-markets days alike - but also will have built into the project a long term maintenance program so that the facility does not again fall into any disrepair. With a total combined investment of $1.3million this will be one of Eumundi’s biggest capital projects in some time and will provide a major fillip to the enduring success of the markets as a whole as well as a lovely shaded community dwell space and parkland on non market days. The works will be scheduled to create the least disruption to town and to those mark stall holders who normally occupy this space.

What would you like to see in Eumundi? Love to hear your thoughts… please email Anthony: gm@eumundicco.com.au

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT T I N A CO O P E R G A L L E R Y

Tina Cooper

What and where is your business? What do you offer?

Old Hermitage building at 93 Memorial Dr.

Tina Cooper Gallery – High class local artwork, jewellery and pottery for sale. Live glass blowing demonstrations by Wolfgang Engel and showcasing the largest collection of international glass art by Tina Cooper. We have a main gallery fronting the main street with an internal studio of Wolfgang Engel’s work and his live glass blowing demonstrations. At the rear of the main building we have the unique art cave where exhibitions are ongoing.

What made you choose Eumundi to base your business?

How long have you been in business in Eumundi? Twenty seven years in Eumundi starting at the Eumundi markets as a stallholder. In 2002 I opened my first gallery at 106 Memorial Drive, The “Top of Town”. In 2012 I had to relocate due to the site being demolished, so I moved to the

Eumundi had a great boutique market to sell my work in 1990 where I picked up many galleries and collectors including celebrities like Pat Cash who adored my work. In those days Eumundi was known as a Glass Town with a Glass Blowing Studio in the old Imperial Hotel which used to attract thousands of people 7 days a week. To this day people still ask where it has gone as they loved to watch so much. What is the best thing about working here? Eumundi still has its old town charm with great restaurants, coffee shops and pubs. You never have a problem getting a great brekkie, lunch or dinner, with a good country smile. Knowing that my business

5

has survived the GFC (Global Financial Crisis) here in Eumundi it speaks for itself as customers still want quality local Australian art. I give thanks to all my loyal customers. What is the worst thing you’ve found about working here? The two day trading town has always focused on the Market Days only. I feel that it has never really integrated as a whole town to include the great galleries, coffee shops, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, pubs and great produce of this area etc. What would you like to see change in our business district? I feel that we haven’t embraced the amazing art talent that we have had here over the years and, as such, have lost the soul of this town as it has been consumed by too many imported low quality stalls that take away the boutique feel of the Original Eumundi Market - not saying

{ T H E G R E E N 20 January 2016

that there isn’t a place for high quality imports here in Eumundi. “Quality Control” over what is sold at the Markets and “less” stalls. I hear this every day from customers and tourists who have come here year after year. To sum it up ... More support for the businesses and promotion as one entity. Tina’s lastest exhibition Scyphozoa is on display from 22 Jan at her Memorial Dr Gallery.

EUMUNDI PA R K I N G F O R U M Around 150 revellers enjoyed an Cr Rogerson held an open community forum on 9 December in the CWA Hall to discuss parking arrangements with concerned locals and community groups. The meeting’s priority was to find a compromise to cater for residents and market visitors. Key points made at the meeting were:

afternoon of rock with Harvey and Bryan Alcorn at Joe’s Waterhole on 2 January. Manager Sophie Eaton said the Pleasure Kings rocked the day and early evening. “It was a great afternoon with so many locals catching up with friends - a big family reunion.”

• There are too many 30 minute parks. • Two hour parking along Napier St all the time in front of Square, remove 1/2 hour limit • More loading zones for market parking in Memorial Dr. • Change 1/2 hour parking time limit from 6am to 1pm Wed and Sat, 2 P 8am to 5pm Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri. • Requested additional 10 minute parking bay in the first bay the uphill side of Lonergans Ln. ECCO will continue to offer locals a $12 per year or $6 per half year to park in the off street car park.

Books TO O M U C H O F A G O O D R E A D Blasphemy, I know, but I’m beginning to wonder if there are too many books being published! As an avid reader, I look forward to the publication of new books by trusted authors as well as discovering new authors and books to expand my experience. I know trusted authors can disappoint and it’s risky to try new genres and authors but it is part of the process. At the beginning of each year, publishers tout their anticipated book releases and the multitude of literary platforms and forums in turn promote/preview those releases. Because I like a mix of Australian, English and American content; my regulars are The Guardian (Australian and English), The New York Review, Huffington Post, The Sydney Morning Herald and Australian Review of Books.

Gr o

This year the number of books being promoted is ... daunting. I have slogged my way through the lists of upcoming publications for 2016 to find some that Green readers might like. Most are ones from “trusted” authors, others just sound intriguing. No guarantees!

M E AT TO DAY, TO F U TO M O R R O W Dr Jo Deverill, Emergency Medicine Specialist Welcome back to the health column and a Happy New Year to you all. I’ve embarked on a New Year’s resolution - to give up eating meat. In doing so I’ve joined about 5 per cent of Australians who are vegetarian (though I still eat fish, so technically I am a pescatarian). Now there are plenty of ethical, economic, and ecological arguments for and against eating meat (and fish) but I won’t get into those because I am not an expert. There is also the undeniable bacon/tofu problem: bacon is delicious, but tofu has the same mouth feel as a boiled thong. Some would argue that a boiled thong actually tastes better than tofu. However we now have some confronting data about the health effects of meat consumption. The story that really hit the headlines was last October’s World Health Organisation report, linking processed meat (ham, bacon, sausages) to bowel cancer. The WHO was relaying the

conclusions of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which had reviewed 800 epidemiological studies, comparing the dietary habits and cancer rates of different groups of people. Shockingly, the IARC labelled processed meats as a group 1 carcinogen. This means that they found a definite association between eating sausages, ham etc and the occurrence of cancer. Other group 1 carcinogens include cigarettes, asbestos … and plutonium. But strength of association is not the same as magnitude of effect. Having a daily bacon burger is considerably less detrimental to health than a daily packet of cigarettes. Likewise a belly full of bratwurst does not compare with the aftermath of an N-bomb. Which is just as well, otherwise Kim Jong II would be weaponising frankfurters.

compares with about one million deaths from smoking, 600 000 from alcohol, and 200 000 from air pollution. The risk from processed meat (unsurprisingly) goes up with exposure: for every 50g daily, the risk of bowel cancer goes up about 18 per cent. There is also a strong (but not definite) link between cancer and red meat (steak, roast lamb etc). Data isn’t information, information isn’t knowledge, knowledge isn’t wisdom. The Cancer Council recommends that we cut down on processed meat, and limit red meat to three or four small serves a week. But they still recognise the important health benefits from eating meat. Does anyone know any good tofu recipes?

If the IARC is right, about 34 000 deaths worldwide are caused by eating processed meat. That

DRESS UP, DRESS DOWN BANANA CAKE Valda Andrews

This is an old family favourite that can be dressed up or down. This version I made for afternoon tea with fresh cream in the middle with banana slices which had been soaked in lemon juice (to stop them going brown). This mixture is quite large and for the dressed down version I bake in a bar tin with sufficient mixture for an extra six patty cases. I make a cream cheese lemon icing or passionfruit icing for this version. Enjoy! For the Cake:

Cream butter and sugar till light and creamy.

Bake in a moderate oven for 50 minutes or until cake leaves side of tin and is tested with a skewer.

Add eggs one at a time and beat well.

Allow to rest for approximately five minutes.

Mix in mashed bananas.

I freeze cavendish when they start to blacken and are perfect when thawed for this cake.

EUMUNDI BUSHCARE GROUP Kim Morris, Bushland Conservation Management

When Gardens Escape We all love a beautiful garden brimming with greenery and bringing tranquillity. We often pop into a local nursery asking for something that is easy to grow and care for but unfortunately many “easy to grow” species can be a serious problem for our bushlands. A native from Mexico Syngonium podophyllum is a popular indoor plant and a real pest in our bushland. It is an aggressive climber, most often escaping from gardens or an old forgotten pot plant, sometimes just from garden clippings dumped into bushland. All parts of this plant

are extremely toxic to cats, dogs, wildlife and us including skin irritation! There are many beautiful Australian native species that can be planted to match the green, lush and tropical feel people may be looking for. Check out some shade loving locals such as Sedges and Lomandra species which have fantastic bank stabilising benefits and attract butterflies. Lillypillys are always a lovely addition with edible fruit for you and local wildlife. Or try the beautiful Orthosiphon aristatus also known as Cat’s Whiskers! Ask your local community native nursery this weekend!

The Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade crew had their first call out for 2016 at 4.45am on New Year’s Day. Volunteer’s Duncan Sayers and John Kennedy, who answered the early morning call, suspected

We were surprised to find an interesting beetle on a small Black Wattle (we were looking for spiders). A closer look showed it to be a weevil and from its beautiful markings of metallic green specks and patches it was easy to identify it as a Botany Bay Diamond Weevil, Chrysolopus spectabilis. This species is one of only five insects collected by Joseph Banks during James Cook’s first journey to Australia. Australia is crawling and buzzing with insects so it is strange that Banks documented words to the effect that “insects here were very few … only the ants were troublesome.” In fact the Botany Bay Weevil was probably collected up near Cooktown as Cook’s

landing at Botany Bay was in the cold part of the year when this species is seldom found near Sydney. But there would have been plenty further north. The name probably was given by early settlers who found them abundant on the shores of Botany Bay in summer.

beetles, 60,000 are weevils. Apart from the distinctive snout there are some differences. All weevil species are herbivores and/or seed eaters. As a group, beetles have a more varied diet ranging from vegetation, carrion, wood, detritus and other insects. We all know what Dung Beetles eat!

These weevils grow to about 25 mm body length and have that typical long snout with mouth parts on the end. The antennae have a distinct “elbow” about two thirds along with a little club on the end. The feet have a “furry” look which makes us think that they are wearing fluffy slippers. Like all weevils they are herbivorous (some weevils are granivorous and eat seeds) and use their jaws to bite into and chew stems and leaves. Botany Bay Weevils are quite selective in their food and out of around 1000 native acacias, feed on only 28 species including Cootamundra Wattle and, locally, Black Wattle. The larvae are fussier still and feed on only seven species of wattle, after they emerge from the holes in acacia stems where the eggs were deposited by the females.

A feature of coleoptera anatomy is that beetles have a pair of hardened “sheaths” called elytra over their membranous wings which they must lift up before flying off. At rest, or when burrowing, the elytra protect the soft wings. True bugs are in the order hemiptera which includes aphids and are not closely related

When we thought we had found a pretty beetle we were still correct. Weevils are beetles. They make up a superfamily in the order coleoptera which includes all beetles. Of the over 350,000 described

THANK YOU FOR THINKING OF US My family and I live on a sheep/cattle station near the small outback town of Yaraka in Western Queensland. The district’s annual Christmas Tree celebration was held on Saturday 12 December. Damian Arthur and John Metelli from the Longreach Rotary Club drove to Yaraka with lots and lots of good things (drought aid) which was lovingly donated by many generous people across Australia. Included in these wonderful gifts were children’s books and pamper packs - which Damian told us were provided by the Eumundi Rotary Club and the Eumundi community. He also said that Eumundi Rotary and the Melton Valley Rotary club from Victoria provided the delicious Rotary Christmas cakes. Thank You does not come close but on behalf of my family and myself, THANK YOU for thinking of us during these appalling times.

There is no doubt times are tough and it really means so much to know that we are being thought about by total strangers and also that people are aware that this drought just won’t ever seem to go away. Wishing you and your loved ones a Holy, Peaceful and Happy Christmas and all the best for 2016. Many thanks, Mary Killeen, Navarra, Isisford Queensland.

G O L D E N WA L D E R S Congratulations from the Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove, Prime Minister Turnbull, Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey, Premier Palaszczuk, MPs Clive Palmer and Peter Wellington, along with live entertainment from guests including Noosa Councillors Frank Wilkie and Joe Jurisevic, were just some of the huge surprises in store for Eileen and David when they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary at Noosa Arts Theatre in October. Eighty friends and family including grandsons Dylan, Josh and Taylor Crisp, joined them for this milestone celebration with many of the guests providing entertainment and revealing to MC Stephen Moore, their connection to the Walders. Following the birth of daughter Kim, they made Australia their permanent home in 1967, moving from Melbourne to the Sunshine Coast in 1979, where they quickly became heavily involved in the community especially through Noosa Arts Theatre and Cooroy Golf Club.

Letters Cont’d from pg 9 husband is a realist painter) and grow vegetables and bamboo! What/who is your inspiration? Mobile photographers and long road trips. Watching films old and new offers me heaps of insight into how light works, how moods are evoked by lighting settings, choices etc. Aussie music right now is highly creative and pushing new boundaries whilst drawing on past genres and influences - especially the way hip hop musicians (Illy, Briggs, Hilltop Hoods, Thundamentals) - are expressing themselves inspires and excites me. Something parallel is happening in photography; film, illustration, design and photography are all merging and

drawing on old methods and styles in new ways. It’s an exciting time in the arts. And street art - I love urban photography.
