Words can’t truly describe the level of commitment, passion and above all integrity that Kess demonstrated. She is an intuitive agent who’s authentic, honest and direct approach is refreshing. You’d think being the beginning of the year there wouldn’t be much happening in a few sleepy hinterland villages. But this issue is literally choc-o-block full of our busy, vibrant township’s activities. We celebrated a few outstanding locals recently at Eumundi’s Australia Day awards (page 6). It was also a big week for our kids heading back to, or starting, school (page 13). There is also a lot happening in our creative communities with art exhibitions and workshops, fitness groups, cinema club, live music, fitness classes and nature news – take your pick! As designer Lil and I put this Green to bed, a storm raged in the region cutting our power and literally blowing up Lil’s fuse box, light fittings and TV. Luckily she’d turned her computer off. Thankfully, she’s married to a sparky and we could still get this issue to the printer. Thanks Paul for being our support crew!

Just Love Eumundi! Our Community Bus - It ain’t getting any younger! Some years ago one of ECCO’s first major investments into community amenity - from proceeds from the Markets Carpark - was our beloved Community Bus. Initially a ride was by way of a gold coin donation, with that changing in recent years due to Government Regulations to a controlled fare (just $5.00 for local pick ups and returns). This service has always required subsidisation, but in recent times as the bus nears its ‘use by’ date, the cost of programmed maintenance, safety upgrades and repairs has escalated to a point where the subsidisation is becoming unsustainable. Of course if patronage became much greater than our current average of around ten to twelve passengers on a typical Friday night and just four to six on Saturday night, there would be some welcome additional income to help offset to costs. For this service to be able to continue, we will need to see greater patronage on Friday and Saturday nights and also on our grocery and shopping run on Thursday mornings. Also we offer a charter service for private functions. The bus seats 19 - so it is great for wedding trans transfers, local expeditions, shopping trips or other gr group functions, where you can have a drink or two and know you will get home safely. The Board of ECCO will review the service again in early March and from that point decide the future of our Community Bus. But, as they say in the classics... “love it or lose it!” To book please phone: 0488 322 323 (if the phone goes straight to voice mail please leave a clear message and one of our friendly drivers will get back to you when they are organising their runs)

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Sala Th ai
Jang Etheridge
What and where is your business? What do you offer? Sala Thai Restaurant and Café is on Memorial Dr in Eumundi. We do dine in and take away meals seven days a week and cater for big or small functions. How long have you been in business in Eumundi? We started the business in 2009 - seven years ago. What made you choose Eumundi to base your business? Because I live in and love Eumundi. Eumundi has a very unique market and a lot of character - also my husband, John Etheridge, has a long family history here. The Etheridge’s were one the first families to establish the township. The Etheridge’s owned the sawmill that supplied all the timber to build the houses and motor cars, then later the local garage. I’m very proud to talk about the family business history and our business today. What is the best thing about working here? It’s a good environment and has a lovely and very friendly community. 15 February 16 February 17 February 18 February
What is the worst thing you’ve found about working here? Still looking!
Eumundi and Caloundra Maleny Beerwah and Bokarina Buderim
What would you like to see change in our business district? I would like to see more houses built in Eumundi. That would mean more population and more chance for a business to survive. Providing enough carparking would be the first priority. Also the entrances to Eumundi need a big improvement and clean up, and to provide a better rest area. Facebook: Sala Thai.

Eumundi’s annual Australia Day Ceremony was held in Dick Caplick park this year. A sausage sizzle raised funds for the proposed EDCA community garden.
This year a group of cheerful locals celebrated Australia Day at the Verrierdale Hall with local entertainment and a free sausage sizzle, along with games and prizes.

Division 10
Division 9 Australia Day Awards
I joined Cr Greg Rogerson at this year’s Eumundi Australia Day Awards ceremony, which was another outstanding success. What could be better than an Aussie barbecue breakfast, entertainment by bush band Flash Jack and an opportunity to recognise standout groups and individuals for their wonderful contribution to the Eumundi and districts community? I would like to thank the Eumundi and District Historical Association and the Eumundi and District Community Association for organising such a memorable event. As always, one of the highlights for me personally was having the privilege of presenting awards to the winners. Congratulations also to the Millington family, Division 9 locals who received the Environment Award at council’s 2016 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards.
Peregian development update While I’ve been out and about in the Eumundi and districts area, a number of people have asked what happened with the recent tree clearing at Peregian Springs. This area, the Coolum Ridges estate, is a master planned development by FKP that was approved in 2005 by a previous council. The environment was an important consideration in the master planning process and the recent clearing was undertaken in accordance with that approval. In response to the community’s concerns, I followed this up with council’s planning department who advised me the clearing was done in accordance with conditions of the development approval. This included the implementation of a fauna management plan – a specialist team oversaw the relocation of any fauna in the area prior to the clearing activity.
I’d like to wish you all a very happy New Year! I hope the festive season was an enjoyable, safe and healthy time for you and your family. Eumundi Scout Hall I’m very pleased to report that at long last the unused scout hall will finally have a tenant in the very near future. The new tenant is the Eumundi and District Community Association (EDCA). Whilst this is the first and only building that EDCA can call home, they have already assured me that they will work collaboratively with the entire Eumundi Community to make sure the ‘Old Scout Hall’ is utilised intensively and put to good use. The existing Eumundi Playgroup and newly formed Eumundi Community Garden Group are two notable sub-groups expressing genuine interest in cohabitating the space and I feel certain that a ‘Men’s Shed’ of some description, won’t be too far away! Eumundi Market Terraces
C H A R I TA B L E L O C A L S
The Eumundi Market Terraces have given me a great deal of consternation over the last couple of years, but I feel relatively safe in declaring that we are finally marking excellent ground in reaching an amicable agreement on their future
Eumundi’s Rotary Club raised an impressive $4,055 to be given to the Rotary Club of Longreach to be distributed to those most in need. Raffle coordinator Tania Broadbent reported the club was also responsible for providing over 175 pamper packs and 160 Rotary Christmas cakes to needy farmers, thanks to the charitable donations from locals.

together with Council are just working on a few minor terms and conditions, before everybody’s signatures are placed on the legal documents. This new collaborative agreement will enable the existing dilapidated ‘Terraces’ to be renewed and a maintenance sinking fund established, that will guarantee the ‘Terraces’ are well loved and most importantly cared for into the future. When the new lease documents together with conditions are finally signed, I promise to personally buy a magnum of Champagne to share and toast the occasion! Car parking When your town is loved by many, it is inevitable that parking becomes a major problem when tourists flock in - the Eumundi markets create such a dilemma. Recently I convened a public car parking forum, where Association executives, local residents, stall holder representatives and Council Traffic Management officers ‘banged heads’ and ideas to try and manage this ongoing concern. New signage will soon be erected, that hopefully still looks after locals, yet gives the tourist outsiders a more fairer and common sense approach. Fingers crossed it will be a welcomed change.

Arts OCEAN TREASURES IN GLASS Tina Cooper Gallery’s latest exhibition entitled Scyphozoa, features the stunning work of four of Queensland’s talented glass artists Tina Cooper, Wolfgang Engel, Jonathon Westacott and Sean O’Donoghue. The artists have come together with their evocative interpretations of the colourful Scyphozoa jellyfish that are found in coastal waters around the world – including the Great Barrier Reef. Jonathon said snorkelling around Lady Musgrave Island’s
coral reefs was his inspiration for his latest work. Wolfgang, was inspired while working with Tina on her Ramada Resort commission in Hervey Bay, making some of the delicate coral reef components. This inspired him to make his own version of jellyfish using his torch blowing techniques. Tina said she has always been fascinated by the Great Barrier Reef’s beauty and uniqueness. Tina feels there is a beautiful correlation between the fragile world under the waves and the fragility of glass.

Health T H E H O L I D AY C R A Z I E S C O M E T O A N E N D With the chaos of the summer holidays behind us it is no wonder we feel like we haven’t really landed in 2016 yet, especially if you’re a parent. I see a major increase in tension headaches coming into the clinic as school holidays wrap up and it isn’t because school is back. It is because we finally have time to recognise just how tense we have been. There are plenty of tricks you can do to take care of yourself. The trapezius muscle is a triangular muscle that roughly runs from the middle of your back, to the tip of your shoulder, then up to beneath the base of your skull and back down. When we are stressed this is one of the muscles that tighten up. If you bring your shoulder towards
your ear you can feel this muscle behind your clavicle (aka collar bone). Right in the middle of that muscle is a trigger point, squeeze it with a 6/10 pressure. You should feel the whole muscle release. After you do this move up to where the skull bone and muscle meet at the back of your head. Put your hand on this area and tilt your head down. A muscle should protrude. Just to the side of this muscle, the side that is away from the spine, there is another trigger point. Putting pressure on this point will help unwind the deeper muscles causing mental fog or headaches. Spending five minutes on each of these points along with a few glasses of water to flush away any toxins, should

relieve your tension headache. Stress can do wacky things to our body which can interrupt our daily lives. If we aren’t present for our loved ones, our family or work, this stress can accumulate and accumulate. Don’t put up with mental or muscle tension. So invest some time for yourself and give your body a massage session with a trained practitioner. Life is more wonderful when
your body and thoughts are free and relaxed. eumundiwellness.com

Balls of bliss
Isa DeLuca
I have two basic bliss ball recipes that are perfect for lunch boxes. I’m very flexible with ingredients - as long as there are enough dates and coconut oil, honey or water to bring it all together. Sometimes I might add sesame seeds, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, or any type of nut. Goji berries are yummy too! If you want to make them even healthier you can also add Probiotics (use the soil based one so temperature isn’t an issue) and Swisse make a fantastic blueberry powder packed with vitamin C which works a treat too. They will store well for a week or so – or make a double batch and freeze. Happy blissing! xoxo EASY PEANUT BUTTER BALLS Ingredients • 1 cup of pitted dates • 3/4 cup of Linseed, Sunflower, Almond (LSA) mix or Almond meal • 3/4 cup desiccated coconut • 1/2 cup peanut butter • Pinch of Himalayan salt to taste (if peanut butter is not salty already) Method Vary ingredients according to the above ratio for more or less balls as desired, but of course you can also vary to taste. More dates will make it even richer/more caramel-like. Soak dates for 30 minutes to hydrate them and make them a bit like creamy caramel and to help the balls to bind (do it for longer if you want them to be richer). Place ingredients into blender and whiz on low-medium until quite fine. I usually have to scrape down the sides of the blender a couple of times to ensure a good consistency.
Roll in to small bite size balls. Pop in to the fridge to harden them.

• 1 Tbs water Method Put cashews in blender for 10 seconds. Add pitted dates, ¼ cup coconut flakes, coconut oil and water, then process for a minute or until mixture comes together and no big nuts or dates remain. Scoop out 1 tablespoon of the mixture with a spoon and roll to form a ball (This is easier if your hands are damp). Put remaining shredded coconut in a bowl with the sesame seeds, then roll the ball in the mix. Store in refrigerator. 15

P lanting by the M oon Amber Grimley I recently planted some seeds in my garden and miraculously they have nearly all germinated! I was at first very surprised at this, as many times in the past my seeds always seemed to be very erratic. But this time, I actually planted these seeds according to my Moon Planting Calendar. Now I am certain that the moon makes a big difference! It makes sense really. The moon has a monthly cycle and is such a powerful influence on our planet that it can move our ocean. It also affects us women, as you all know. Therefore it makes sense that the moon can influence the movement of sap in plants too.
GARDENING best for harvesting and other garden activities like weeding. It’s certainly not a new thing. People have been planting by the moon for a very long time. If you want more detail I suggest getting yourself a moon planting calendar. Give it a try. It’s always fun planting your own seeds and watching them grow into plants and then harvesting the goodies! Happy sowing.
The first quarter of the moon, when it is waxing, is the perfect time to plant leafy vegetables. The second quarter is best for fruiting annuals. The third quarter is best for root crops and perennials. The last quarter is
Property owners are being invited to provide feedback on the future management of West Indian drywood termite, particularly, who pays for treatment. Queensland Chief Plant Health Manager with Biosecurity Queensland Mike Ashton said, “the Qld Govt’s surveillance and treatment program has confined the pest to sites in Brisbane, Wide Bay, Townsville and Rockhampton but is keen to hear of any reports on the Sunshine Coast.” The termite is a serious pest of timber used in construction, so it’s important that it’s spread is contained. “We currently spend around $745,000 each year on fumigation, surveillance and related activities for the termite, but if left unchecked it could spread to be a greater problem to property owners in Queensland.”

Outdoors N ews f rom the W ildli f e C entre It is with a sense of relief for staff at the Wildlife Centre when the bird breeding season draws to a close. They’re run off their feet to feed the huge varieties of birds over the summer months. All the different babies eat different foods ranging from: seeds, meal worms, crickets, nectar mix, ox heart to fruit etc. Some birds are self-feeding whilst others are hand fed. Clean water pots are essential as are clean cages. The workload is relentless. Two eastern grey kangaroos (Bobby and Louie) have been released to a safe site well away from traffic and predators. A new admission is a Melomys appropriately named Mel. These are quite small nocturnal marsupials and at first glance resemble a small rat in both size and colouration. However these adorable creatures can be found along the coastal rainforests and particularly like vine thickets where they scamper up trees to build a nest using leaves and grasses. They are mostly vegetarian and eat leaves, shoots and fruit. Not only are these marsupials that live near human habitation at

risk from cats and foxes, there is also the worry that they could accidentally be fed rat poison. A young possum is at the centre having been shot by a young lad with a bow and arrow! If you have found a bird or a mammal that you think is in need of help please phone the Centre to find out what you should do, or bring to the Centre ASAP. Please DO NOT attempt to administer any medical help or give food and water.
I quite often get called the “crazy chicken lady” but I’m not sure why? Yes, I have a lot of chickens. Yes I talk to my girls like people, but is that odd? Chicken lovers will be shaking their heads saying “no”! If you are thinking about getting chickens for your backyard then be prepared to transform into a crazy chicken person too. These highly addictive creatures have so much to offer and are pets with benefits. We are just getting chickens for eggs. This will be the intention, but I guarantee that 90% of people will very quickly become fascinated by their chickens and talking to their chooks every day. “Good morning ladies. Did you sleep well?” We just want brown hens. Many people start out with brown laying hens such as Isa Browns. These girls are extremely people-friendly and great layers. They are crossbred to lay nearly one egg a day for up to 18 months and rarely go broody.
Above: Ringtail possum recovering from burns from a BBQ. Below: Mel the Melomys
But once you develop a chicken addiction thoughts about introducing some different coloured chickens to your flock will begin. Google images will get a thrashing as you search for different breeds and different coloured eggs. Heritage chickens (also called purebred) come in over 120 different breeds and all have their own traits and egg laying abilities. These purebred bloodlines will live much longer, with the oldest

chicken on record reaching a ripe old age of 16. We don’t eat many eggs. Ever tried a 100% free range egg? You’ll never want to buy eggs from the supermarket again! Due to the taste factor, and the delight in collecting your own eggs, household egg consumption will rise – I promise. You will need to get more chickens! The kids want chickens. The kids will definitely get much joy and education from having your own backyard chooks. But be prepared - soon the new girls will be up on your balcony having their morning tea with you. They also enjoy some lap time watching your favourite TV show and they love helping you dig in the garden. A small coop is fine. In the initial months a small chicken coop purchased from the internet will be fine for your flock. As time passes though you’ll realise; the girls need a better nesting box as the current one gets too hot; the girls might need a bit more room on their perch for a good night’s sleep; the girls are getting bored and need more space to stretch their legs. At this point you will once again thrash Google images for ideas on building your own coop. Your chicken Taj Mahal will eventually emerge! I believe a chicken addiction is a healthy one. With delicious eggs on your doorstep, amazing family pets and stress relievers why wouldn’t you?

subject to noise for the first time namely in the area of Eumundi, Cooroy and Doonan?
I have read in the news sheet sent with my [Doonan] rates notice recently, an article concerning the Sunshine Coast Airport. It is nothing more than an incorrect, misleading propaganda relating to the proposed expansion.
8. Some improvements may be necessary to the existing runway but would not involve anything like the costs the extensions proposed and could handle any increase in any aircraft or traffic likely to be involved in the foreseeable future.
1. The statement claims $4.1 billion increase in revenue will result – what nonsense!
It would not be necessary to alter existing flight paths and so would be more environmentally acceptable. Finally, I would be pleased to learn whether you are in favour of the extension or not. Yours sincerely D.W Aitchison, Doonan.
2. Where is the 4.1 billion coming from and who will benefit if it did? 3. Over how many years is the projection calculated? 4. The justification for the airport expansion is based on laughable estimated traffic flows having no relationship to a regional airport situated some sixty minutes from a capital city airport (Brisbane). 5. The airlines would not agree (if asked) and so will not supply flights and aircraft. 6. How (and where) do 3,500 homes enjoy noise reduction where are they? 7. What about the number (in your electorate) who will be
FLUSHING OUT YOUR COLON There is no evidence that Colon Cleansing will improve your health and wellbeing and if the claims by these therapists were true, the medical professionals we consult would have studied the practice at University. The mythical belief that constipation, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome and weight reduction can be remedied by Colonic Cleansing is a notion instigated with heavy marketing from spa
facilities and with endorsements by well-known celebrities. There has been no evidence that flushing out your colon has any health benefits whatsoever.
NOTICES Wanted! Cleaner/ Handyman wanted for The Imperial Hotel, Eumundi wanted. Call Brendan 5442 8811 or drop into the hotel.
Colon Therapists like to tout the benefit of detoxifying the colon but the body already has an efficient system of eliminating waste from the body and it is called pee and poop.
Wanted! Gardener wanted 1/2 day per week, Doonan. Call Austin 5471 1962.
This practise appears to me to be another way for quacks to profit from gullible people who believe that Colon Cleansing will be the way to cure all that ails them. This treatment and the belief that it will assist in your health is very concerning as it is totally unfounded and has no basis in gastrointestinal physiology whatsoever. Vicki Wood, Eumundi
