Notes Editor’s note ...

A Hinterland moment

Now that our tropical summer is in full swing it seems our flora and fauna are holding a party every night as noises of randy frogs, bickering fruit bats, possums roof racing, bandicoots chasing and rowdy crickets fill the night in between crashes of thunder and heavy rain. In the morning our garden is strewn with half eaten fruit and nuts, the grass has drunk too much, insects are moving very slowly, roos have collapsed on the driveway, new plants are growing where yesterday there were none, and the birds are in hysterics – again. Humans are really just the bystanders who just get in the way of nature’s good times. This issue we celebrate our delicious tropics from the sidelines.

I have been working at Joe’s Waterhole for 34 years and every year, to celebrate my birthday milestone, the hotel has a dress up themed party for the locals - and anyone who likes to dress up and dance. This year it’s on Saturday night, 12 March. This year on January 14 we lost one of our most loved locals Bluey to leukemia. One of our other locals Michelle Thurbon is going to shave her long hair off in honor of Bluey at this year’s birthday bash. Bluey did the shave himself 10 years ago at Joe’s so it’s ironic that’s what got

Sophie and Bluey at Joe’s. him in the end. If you are keen to join Michelle in the World’s greatest Shave for Leukemia on the 12th, or to donate, please call me on 5442 8144.

Eumundi Rotary’s Pride of Work Awards on Thursday 25 February, 5.30pm at Joe’s Waterhole, aims to recognise four people within our community who not only do their job well and consistently but who do it with a smile and go that extra mile - whatever and whenever the work situation dictates. Guest speaker is Sunshine Coast Business Council Chair Sandy Zubrinich. RSVP by 23 Feb by text to club president Les Godwin 0411 877 346.

• Don’t let The Green fall into the trap of being aimed at the Coast’s affluent, elite enclaves. It will alienate locals that provide valuable support to ECCO, The Green and the local economy. • Thank you for creating a beautiful community magazine, bringing everyone together. • Keep balance of editorial and ads - read it for content, not for ads. • Love it. Love the content and the way it is put together. Good job well done! • Congratulations on a great magazine - but must always strive for that little bit more.

The well attended exhibition opening of Boundaries and Beyond at Wan’din’in arts space behind Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitors Centre on Memorial Dr, featured the work of expressionistic painter Tarja Ahokas. decades with five singles from each era along with a trivia smack down. The solid gold dancers were slow to hit the dancefloor, but when the spin jockeys spun their 80’s favourites the crowd soon worked itself into a lathering frenzy of Footloose worthy masterful moves. When the dynamic duo hit the 90’s, DJ AJ looked unbeatable, so DJ Mr T resorted to dirty tactics with nasty dance moves that mesmerized onlookers. Groupie Katie was heard to swoon, “He’s so bad – but it’s so, so good!” Tasteful music reigned supreme on the night with DJ AJ taking the win: 51 votes to 27. DJ Mr T was dragged from the Bunker, vowing to return with a better vinyl collection and take back the title.

D I V I S I O N A L B O U N D A RY R E V I E W The Sunshine Coast Regional Council has recently changed the boundaries for division 9 and 10 in accordance with the Local Government Act 2009. The Act requires all 10 Divisions in the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to have the same number of voters, plus or minus 10% (the quota). Key to the redivision was voter count information sourced from the electoral roll and the Australian Bureau of Statistics. On 23 February 2015 Sunshine Coast Regional Council had 195,680 voters on the electoral roll, making the average enrolment across all divisions 19,568. It was determined that division

9, which had the highest number of divisional voters across the 10 divisions, was above its quota. On this basis, Council resolved to change the boundaries of division 9, across to division 10. This sees divisions 9’s north western boundary move east. Approximately 2,220 electors have been transferred. This change affects the communities of: Eumundi, North Arm, Ninderry, Bridges, Yandina and Kulangoor. Polling day for the next council elections is Saturday 19 March. ecq.qld.gov.au/ electoraldistricts/ localgovernmentareas/localgovernment-reviews.

Division 10

Boundary Changes for Division 9 and 10 I was prattling on the other day reflecting on the fact that we are already one and a half months into 2016, when it struck me that with the Local Government Election on March 19, I have already completed a hectic four year term as your Division 10 Councillor. How time flies when you’re in a job that you enjoy and feel you’re making a difference. In the upcoming election, the State Boundary Commissioner has made quite a few changes to the Division 10 and 9 boundaries by uniting the divided communities of: Eumundi, North Arm, Ninderry, Bridges, Yandina and Kalangoor into the Division 10 boundary. So if you live in the above local communities, you’re in Division 10. All this change is due to the lopsided, high increase in development toward the beach front and rather low growth in the hinterland which is exaggerated by the limitations of the SEQ Regional Plan.

Eumundi Range Road Bridge Completion Construction completion date is 8 March and includes picnic shelter, heritage treatment for the pedestrian side (east) of the bridge and a new Eumundi entrance statement. Pride of Work Awards I am really looking forward to attending the Rotary Club of Eumundi’s Pride of Work Awards on 25 February. This night also includes the launch of the Welcome to Eumundi Kit. The kit is an excellent collaborative project between ECCO, Eumundi Chamber of Commerce and Eumundi Rotary, and contains everything you need to experience Eumundi and her finest! Meet the Candidate Night You will have your chance to meet me and the other candidates running for the Division 10 seat, on Tuesday March 8, 6.30pm at Joe’s Waterhole Hotel, Memorial Dr, Eumundi. I look forward to meeting you and participating in the evening.

Arts

Art ist Spot lig ht D av id S u ters , T imber cra f tsman How long have you been using wood to make bespoke furniture and artworks? I’ve been handcrafting timber furniture for over 30 years. For the past 15 I’ve refined my designs to emulate the natural beauty of solid timber, adding other materials into my works such as metal, glass, pigments and semi-precious stone. Where do you work and why? How long have you been in this space? My studio is in Eumundi - an awesome boutique village to live and work. We relocated here in mid 2014 - I just love the culture of the area. What is your connection to the region and Eumundi? Kinfolk connect us to the wider region, particularly Tewantin and Noosa Junction. However, I fell in love with the Noosa hinterland, preferring to make Eumundi home for our family and business.

What/who is your inspiration? Firstly nature, which is then enhanced by the abundance of extremely talented local artisans, each willing to share their stories, passion and aspirations. Tina Cooper is one such artist I find extremely inspiring. I am motivated by these types of alliances and am looking forward to developing a number of joint projects with Tina later this year. What can’t you work without? Ah, a very simple answer my wife Cindy! Also a gifted artisan, she is a passionate crusader for the creative industries and artisans in our region. Cindy is very supportive of my goals, and at the same time keeps me grounded. Where is your work currently on display? My collection of current work is exhibited at Artisans Gallery Eumundi. The Gallery opened in May last year.

10

What would you like to see for fellow local artisans in the future? With a decline of quality local galleries in Eumundi, I’d like to see a seven-day a week workshop/retail space evolve for our many local artisans to both demonstrate and showcase their individual and collective talents. I sincerely believe a dedicated Makers Centre - Arts Hub concept to be of economic value as well as a future cultural attraction to our town for locals and tourism in general. timbercraftsman.com.au

Books A SENSE OF EUPHORIA I’ve just read and very much enjoyed Lily King’s Euphoria. This award-winning novel is loosely based on the life of renowned anthropologist Margaret Mead. Set in the 1930s on the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea, Euphoria takes readers into the lives of three young anthropologists working in very isolated tribal communities. The title refers to the transient sense anthropologists get at some point in their work when they have grasped the culture of a community. Although the novel eventually departs dramatically from Mead’s life, it begins with an actual incident in which Nell (Mead), Fen (Reo Fortune, her second husband) and Bateson (Andrew Bateson who became her third) first meet at the end of an arduous trip. In that intense setting, their intimate personal relationships and their work including the theories they are developing become deeply entangled. It’s fascinating to see how their contrasting anthropological theories mirror their personalities.

At one point Nell declares, “I’m not a zoologist. She insists on involving the “researched as participants rather than specimens and builds lasting relationships, blurring the boundaries--a radical theoretical departure from practice at the time. King has done a very fine job with this book, but I can’t decide whether it is made worse or better by it being so identified with real people and events. For instance, I found myself wondering if Mead had actually visited a particular place or was it just a substitute to fictionalise the work. Was Fen as terrible a man as he is portrayed in the book? Just how blurred should the lines be? This is a book that deserves to be discussed.

C O O L O O L A C R O C S C A R N I VA L Alasdair Scott Eumundi Swim Club’s annual “day out” to the Cooloola Crocs carnival at Tin Can Bay last weekend was a resounding success for swimmers and parents. Rain showers did nothing to dampen spirits, in fact they provided a cool reprieve as the swimmers delivered “hot” performances in the pool. Jaea, Isabella and Emma were amongst the youngest competitors and set a great standard with their effort and enjoyment. Not to be outdone, club president George Brook helped out the “A” relay team and brought home the top spot. The award for the most tenacious swim has to go to Ally Broderick, who swam virtually the entire 100 Individual Medley with her goggles clenched between her teeth and received a great ovation for her effort. Eumundi is a small club with a big heart and the family friendly 12

culture is noted throughout the region. Coach Adrian Williams has fitted straight in and has had a significant impact in improving the technique and times for all the Eumundi swimmers. His relaxed, but passionate approach for bringing out the best in each individual whilst fostering a genuine team spirit, bodes well for the development of the club. Dash for Cash events started the day, but somehow the 24 Eumundi swimmers saved some energy for a mammoth series of terrific team performances in the relays. Go Eumundi! We may need two buses next year!

Health IF YOU CAN KEEP YOUR HEAD You are driving along a country road when you come across the scene of a high speed accident. It looks like it has just happened. Nobody else is at the scene. A motorcycle rider is lying on his side on the road, and a car has crashed into the verge. The driver has just opened her door, but even from a distance you can see that her face and arms are covered in blood. The man on the ground isn’t moving. The first thing to do at an accident is to remain calm. Take a deep breath and a good look around. Do not rush in because it is very likely that you are in immediate danger too. Park your car in a place that is visible to oncoming traffic and turn the hazard lights on. If it is dark, use your headlights to illuminate the

people are injured.

If there is another adult with you, you get them to stop traffic by signalling from the side of the road. As soon as you have a second helper, get them to do the same in the other direction. Call 000. If you are using someone else’s phone, you don’t need to enter a passcode.

You are now by the side of the motorbike rider. He’s conscious and can talk. He says his back hurts. There is a very serious risk of a spinal injury so you should not move him. Leave him on his side with his helmet on, but lift the visor, undo the chin strap and support his head. Tell him that help is on its way, and until then not to move.

Ask for ambulance. State your location as accurately as possible. Some information about your whereabouts is automatically provided to the operator, but this is only approximate. Say which direction you are travelling in, and the last exit you passed. Tell the emergency medical dispatcher how many vehicles are involved, and how many

You can hear the sound of sirens. You did really well. You kept your head in a crisis. And you make a mental note to book yourself - at the first opportunity - into a St John’s Ambulance first aid course. stjohnqld.com.au

Another driver has stopped and is helping the woman with the head injury. She remains in her driver’s seat and he is holding a towel to her head, putting pressure on the bleeding site.

Living A HEALING jOURNEY Mick and Janet Millington made a huge lifestyle choice back in 1994. They needed to find a chemical free home, as Janet was suffering from a serious illness. So they uprooted their Sydney life and purchased 32 acres of degraded cattle land that sits between the rail line and the river just out of Eumundi village. Compacted and severely damaged by decades of water from the railway tunnels, the property had major erosion and fertility loss. Storm water runoff added to the damage by flooding the property from the huge catchment areas above the old corridor that had blasted through pipes creating deep gullies and seasonal swamplands. The Millington’s took on the

Sacha Hamilton-MacLaren

challenge of transforming this traumatised property using many chemical free techniques and strategies. The couple came up with a very detailed plan with a view to establishing three main businesses: farm forestry, bamboo forestry and crayfish farming, as well as wanting to produce some of their own vegetables, meat and eggs. They set about learning all they could about chemical free forest establishment and fish production in the sub tropics. They studied permaculture practices in earthworks, dam and pond construction. Janet participated in three master tree grower programs and studied

permaculture with Geoff Lawton and Bill Mollison.

the Coast to share with others living on the farm.”

The couple planted 300 cabinet trees; cedar, silky oak and eucalyptus, to establish the forestry business. Bamboo was an emerging industry in ‘94 and they planted in excess of 400 bamboo plants which grew perfectly in Coastal conditions. Mick undertook a degree in Aquaculture and they developed their crayfish farm (which they’ve since sold on). Janet explained, “We learnt from some of the great teachers in the region and across Australia, by participating in courses and workshops and bringing experts to

Today the property has eight acres of registered farm forestry and six acres of riparian zone enhancement. There’s also regenerated forested areas and productive flats, orchard, bamboo groves, vegetable gardens and picturesque spots to relax and reflect. Last month the Millington’s were awarded for their hard work when they became this year’s winners of the Sunshine Coast Council Living Smart Australia Day Award. This win has inspired the couple to open their farm for a day of workshops for others wanting improve the land of this region and are interested in their farming methods. Mick said, “We want to show people how you can resurrect degraded land and the methods to use,” he added “It’s all about the long history and the impediments along the way - working and studying full time - what we have today is quite extraordinary.” Their 22 year journey healed both the land and the owners.

N atu re N otes FOUR GREEN TREE FROGS In our immediate area there are four species of native tree frogs which are green, or mostly so. There are several more which are only partly green and more still that have no green colouration at all. Most of these “non-green” tree frogs are terrestrial and never climb up into trees or other vegetation. They are called tree frogs because anatomically they belong to the world-wide family hylidae which includes all tree frogs. The Australian “branch” has the genus name “Litoria” and note that in all our native species the eye pupils are horizontal. The four local green (or mainly green) species are quite common in our gardens and where three or four of them are found in the same habitat, identification requires a closer look since the young of a large species may look very much like the adults of a smaller one. Also, two of the four species are able to change colour to better blend into their surrounds. The largest one of the green four is the one that is officially titled in reference books as “Green Tree Frog” (Litoria caerulea). Easy to identify, this

Kon Hepers

species grows to about 100 mm body length, has a “blunt” head, large pads on fingers and toes. They are green, sometimes buff above (dorsally) and granular white underneath (ventrally). Definitely our most placid frog. In wet weather they often call from hanging baskets, down-pipes and drains where they can live for years. Next in size is the Orange-eyed Tree Frog (Litoria chloris), easily recognizable from its bright red/ orange eyes. These frogs are not so much garden inhabitants but prefer wet forests, especially those adjoined by open grasslands where the frogs breed in ephemeral pools during heavy rain. Overgrown road-side ditches are also a good habitat but they only vocalise during and immediately after very heavy rain. They grow to about 65 mm. Very acrobatic and our favourite frog! Almost every garden would have a few Dainty Green Tree Frogs (Litoria gracilenta) hiding in trees and bushes. Inside the “stems” of palm fronds is a favourite place. This species has a lighter green dorsum

with upper arms and fingers bright lemon and the ventral side a paler lemon. They are also a placid frog and are not easily disturbed. On rainy nights these are often the ones you see hopping across the road. It’s a really beautiful frog that grows to about 45 mm. This species has two different calls: one is a muted low-key “moan” heard occasionally but in heavy rain they let loose and become the soprano component of the frog chorus.

including Eastern Dwarf Tree Frog (they grow to only 25 mm) and Eastern Sedge Frog. This species is not entirely green: it has a white and a brown streak from nose to shoulder. Often they are not green at all and have a buff coloured dorsum. Our most common tree frog (Litoria fallax), loves to hide out in the little pools within bromeliads and similar plants, exactly where we are discouraged from having these mosquito breeding grounds. Even in winter they announce their presence with a sharp “w-r-e-e-k” call which becomes a chorus on wet nights.

Also probably in every garden somewhere is the smallest of the four. This frog also has a number of common names

Outdoors BUSHCARE VOLUNTEERING

E U M U N D I B ushcare G R O U P

Amber Grimley

Kim Morris, Bushland Conservation Management

I have found that volunteering has been one of the most satisfying things that I have done for my wellbeing. Being a new mother, I needed to be able to remain connected to the community which is sometimes hard when you are giving so much to your little ones. Volunteering is something that we only seem to have time for when we are retired or out of work. However some volunteer opportunities, like bushcare, is perfect for school age children.

Nuts about the bunya nut

The icing on the volunteering cake, for me, was the recent Australia Day award that I received in the sustainability category for my contribution to the Eumundi Bushcare Group. How wonderful and what a huge surprise this was! It is great to know that our little group has community support. However, without the support of our volunteers the group would

not have come about, so this award is also a reflection of their passion and support. Also Council supports us through their Community Nature Conservation Program, and we thank them.

EUMUNDI FIRIES REPORT Duncan Sayers, Eumundi 1st officer Pictured here is Clive Solidway. His name has been changed to protect his true identity because Cleve - ahem, I mean Clive - is insane. Here he is after lugging a fire-fighting backpack full of water up steep, burning country, in roasting conditions and yet he is still smiling. Or is that a manic grin … whatever, we can see teeth so I’m calling it a smile. Certifying Clive’s insanity is that he isn’t being paid for this. He is a volunteer. He dropped everything to head out and fight fires on someone else’s land for no monetary reward. So where does that smile come from? Can’t put it down to pyromania, he’s putting the fire out. Hero complex – unlikely. The money he’s saving on gym fees – yep. Perhaps it is that odd combination of helping out your community, and getting a strange sense of fun to go with your quiet satisfaction. Or maybe Clive is actually mad!

During my time on the Bunya Mountains I observed how the Brushtail possums absolutely loved feasting on these beautiful nuts which is something I have adopted for my own wildlife care of Possums and always have a supply in my freezer to supplement my Brushtail possums while in rehabilitation.

Council put up a new sign for us recently at the Sunken Garden which informs locals about our work and we can update working bee dates. Check it out! The next Eumundi Bushcare Group working bee in on Sunday 28 February, 9.30am to 12pm, morning tea provided at the Sunken Garden, Pacey St.

There was plenty of practical, local patriotism on display at the recent Invasion/Australia Day awards ceremony. Volunteers were recognized for their enormous contributions in many areas of our community. Our fearless leaders in Canberra have famously asked us whether we are lifters or leaners: seems like there’s plenty of lifting going on in our little town. You’re all completely bonkers – keep it up.

Every year from December through to March the Bunya Cones are crashing to the ground, with a bumper crop every three years. Many years ago I was lucky enough to live and work on the Bunya Mountains. My spare time was spent walking the National Park trails, wildlife spotting and my determination to be a wildlife carer and work in the environmental field really took off. The first botanical name I ever learnt was the Bunya Pine: Araucaria bidwillii which was named after John Bidwill the botanist who first recorded this species. These football sized cones will come crashing through the branches to land heavily on the ground and can cause serious injury to anyone standing below. Inside these cones are many segments containing the bunya nuts. The chef on the mountains would have us open up the nuts with a guillotine and he would grate them into his fillings for chicken kiev and pop a roasted nut

16

on top for decoration. They are often enjoyed traditionally in a pot of salted boiling water and the shell splits slightly. Another popular way is to roast them and add a little butter or garlic butter. They can also be grated into baking and the Aboriginal people would grind them into a powder to make bread. I find the nut similar to a chestnut with a potato starchy texture. These nuts are extremely good for you, very high in protein, fibre and complex carbohydrates and also magnesium and potassium.

{ T H E G R E E N 17 February 2016

A very special event in cultural history is the Bunya Bunya festival, a gathering of many Aboriginal tribes who would come great distances along the Bunya trail to the Bunya Mountains, the largest stand of Bunya Pines found anywhere in the world. The tribesmen would camp for months: feasting, trading, exchanging information and performing ceremonies. There is now a Bunya Mountains Murri Ranger program that ensures places of traditional significance are restored and maintained. Another important smaller feast was also held locally in the Blackall ranges at Baroon Pocket. The Bunya Pine is an essential food source to many native animals such as cockatoos, possums and rodents and holds a truly special significance for our local indigenous community.

Outdoors COMPOSTING

Rob Birse, Biodynamic gardener

In this first article for 2016, I’d like to discuss composting. I have to confess at the outset that I LOVE making compost! To me, composting is a truly alchemical process – it’s intensely satisfying to create new, wonderful, lifeenhancing substance out of decaying waste matter and it really isn’t difficult once you’ve learnt the few keys to success. Well-made compost, particularly if it has benefitted from the addition of the six biodynamic herbal compost preparations which guide the breakdown process, is the most powerful fertiliser I’ve ever used! It is an ideal way to produce large quantities of humus, that magical substance so crucial in enabling plants to access nutrients from the soil. Compost is also chock full of microorganisms which bring our soils to life. If our soil is hungry to begin with, we will need to apply a reasonable quantity of compost initially, however I’ve found that as my soils improve, I need to add less and less in subsequent applications . We just need to give a stimulant to

the microorganisms, which are busy creating humus in the soil. Because a properly functioning compost heap is a living organism, it needs to incorporate the four elements of life, acknowledged since Ancient Greece: Earth, Water, Air and Fire (Warmth). Generating fire in the heap is crucial to the breakdown process. The other three elements need to be adequately addressed to generate the heat. Earth This is all the materials we use for the heap. Successful compost needs a mix of c arbonaceous (C) material: dry grass, straw, cane mulch, chipped prunings; and nitrogenous (N) material: manures, fresh greens, green hay, vegetable scraps; in the approximate ratio of 25C to 1N. Because the C:N ratio of the various ingredients can vary considerably depending on their age and storage, it becomes a bit of an intuitive thing when it comes to quantities! For example, if you have access to plenty of fresh manure, you

would need to add more carbon material to balance it, with not too much extra fresh green material. Similarly, if you only have aged manures use plenty of fresh greens or possibly a legume hay like lucerne. Don’t be afraid to put citrus scraps or onion skins into the heap, unless you have really unbalanced quantities of these, they cause no problems at all. Balance is the key! Water Having adequate moisture levels in all the ingredients going into the heap is crucial and probably the most common cause of poor breakdown I see in people’s heaps. Pre-soak any dry ingredients prior to building your heap, as it is almost impossible, apart from a tropical downpour, to properly wet a dry heap! My preferred method is to soak them in a wheelbarrow or bathtub until wetted through. This is water efficient and can be quick. Air Living organisms need to breathe, so ensure adequate ventilation. A well-functioning

Also, I am happy to run a workshop on composting at Sunspace café if there is sufficient interest. Please contact the café directly if you are interested.
