Shopping trips every Thursday morning!
A HINTERLAND MOMENT
Every year on ANZAC Day I overcome the urge to roll over and have a sleep-in and drag myself down to Verrierdale Hall for the dawn service. Every year I tell my son he doesn’t have to come along, but without fail he’s dressed and ready to go before I even opened my eyes.
EVERY THURSDAY YOU CAN CATCH THE BUS TO NOOSAVILLE OR COOROY (ALTERNATE WEEKS) AND ENJOY A MORNING’S SHOPPING TRIP TO YOUR FAVOURITE SUPERMARKETS AND SHOPS.
There’s something very special about the Verrierdale service; it always feels intimate, sombre, communal - beautiful. I love the way the shafts of light radiate through the trees as though it were an outdoor cathedral, the way the Noosa Chorale’s voices mingle with the cries of morning birds, the way Air Marshall Geoff Shepherd brings that day in Gallipoli vividly back to us every year, and the way we all sit down together for a gunfire breakfast in the old hall.

Just Love Eumundi! Volunteering for fun and money! Eumundi Combined Community Organisation runs the Eumundi Markets carparks in Napier road, parking some 100,000 cars every year. This service not only contributes to the convenience for a big percentage those visitors who enjoy our wonderful town and markets (some 1.5 million people every year!), but also is the main income generator for the community amenities and services ECCO provides via The Green, the Community Bus, the RV Stopover, our playground rickety bridge and the many cultural and community events and activities under Experience Eumundi. In addition to the significant annual expenditure on these projects and community amenities, ECCO every year also distributes some $60K to carpark volunteer associations - helping to give service to many important local community groups.
we are also seeking someone to deliverThe Green in the “Eumundi 110” housing estate. Every second Thursday, if you’ve got an hour to spare, there are about 100 homes in the new housing estates at the northern rn end of Memorial Drive (just before the Showgrounds) that need their letterboxes stuffed with some Green goodness. We will pay a regular cash honorarium to someone who is able to commit to this task on-going. You’ll meet your neighbours, stay fit and be helping the community stay in touch with all the news and happenings in town.
And, we are now looking for more volunteers
SOUNDS GOOD?
If you are part of a community organisation that seeks a reliable means of raising funds for any worthwhile project - for a minimum 2 hour shift, you’ll be fully trained and your group can earn $22 per volunteer / per hour greeting visitors to the markets and helping them park their car on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. No experience necessary - just need a wide smile, like the great outdoors and love people!
If you would like to help deliver The Green or participate as a carpark volunteer group, please contact Richard without delay! carparking@eumundicco.com.au

An enthusiastic group of locals met on Sunday 17 April to plan the future use of Eumundi’s neglected Scout Hut and surrounding land. Eumundi & District Community Association (EDCA) were awarded the Council lease to establish a community garden, men’s shed and youth group at the site. Long time local, EDCA member and Eumundi Community Combined Organisation (ECCO) Chair, Louise Formosa, gave the group a tour of the space and shared EDCA’s proposed vision
of how the three groups could potentially utilise the space and support each other, and asked for community insight. Don, who lives across the road, said the area has firm soil because it was once Eumundi’s rodeo ground. “Pioneers in this area selected this land for a community park – it is fitting that it’s now returning to that role,” Don shared. ROOTS, SOUL AND ISLAND STYLE R O L L Kim Johnston A typical Sunday morning for us involves pjs, pancakes and music to chill to. Andrea Kirwin is a fave! An independent singersongwriter with Australian-Fijian roots, her music has been described as “Hip Hop, Funk and Soul with an Island Style Roll”. Her latest album, The Story Of Us, interweaves poetry about life and love with silky laid back vocals and a groove you can’t help but relax into. Andrea can often be found performing locally. “The Sunshine Coast definitely inspires me. The people here, the venues. The laid back arts/surf/music lifestyle. I’m inspired by love and living simply.”
flows nicely and the last song transitions back to the first song - it was so much fun to record and release!” Andrea is a full time musician, which allows her to focus on her music and development as an artist and person. She enjoys a good cup of tea, board games, gardening and reading books which prompt reflection. You can check out Andrea’s music at the Imperial on 1 May and Sunspace Café on 8 May (Mothers Day). Challenge her to a board game if you dare!
Four of the songs from her latest album were highly commended in the Queensland Music Awards. Andrea describes her album as a “feel good” album which captures the sound of the Sunshine Coast. “A lot of friends listen to the album when driving, so I put a lot of effort into where each song sits on the album from start to finish. “It

TINA BIDS EUMUNDI GOODBYE
Michael Carney, Chair of the Foundation for Culture and Art Eumundi
Glass artist Tina Cooper, who first came to Eumundi as a stall holder 27 years ago, bids the township goodbye. Tina who hails from up on the range (Maleny/Montville), established her first studio in Mapleton 24 years ago and was also a part of the Hot Glass Studio in the old Imperial Hotel in Eumundi. She also opened a studio in the old garage at the top of town. The owners of the property where Tina recently had her gallery on Memorial Drive have recently sold the premises, and Tina has decided to close her store.
Tina wishes to thank all who have supported her and her partner Wolfgang Engle over the years and hopes that they have enjoyed their creations.
GROWING UP IN A COUNTRY TOWN Academic and author Kim Hodges’ memoir, Girl on the Edge shares an insight into what it’s like for a sensitive teenager struggling with growing up in a claustrophobic country town. Kim captures the oppressive feeling of being trapped by her family, her community, her circumstance and also her body. Kim will be holding a free discussion about her book at Berkelouw Books on Memorial Dr, on Thursday 28 April at 5pm. berkelouw.com.au/ stores/eumundi or 5442 8366.
The winning entry in the Eumundi Sculpture Prize 2015, was officially unveiled on Monday following the ANZAC Commemorative Service. A large contingent of onlookers were there to share the moment when Councillors Rogerson and Robinson together with artists, Meg Geer and Richard Thompson and Louise Formosa, the Chair of ECCO, jointly removed the veil. The installation of the Spirit Orb is the result of a combination of enthusiastic commitment by a number of people, not least Meg and Richard and Luke McCrea and his partner Jules at Artisan Blacksmiths in Nambour. Without the long running support of Darcy Ringland, Council approvals and meeting the strict regulations required to make the site child friendly might not have been achieved with the expediency and effectiveness that occurred. Darcy also worked with all the material suppliers and tradespeople who were engaged
in the site preparations. As well a number of volunteers helped out as the occasion demanded. It was a great experience to be part of the project where everyone worked together so well and so conscientiously to ensure that the Sculpture would be child safe and a lasting contribution to the continuing development of Public Art in Eumundi. The project would not have been possible without the significant financial support provided by ECCO and the Sunshine Coast Council.
G E N E R AT O R G A L L E RY T O C L O S E Eumundi’s Generator Gallery is closing after less than a year. Owner Karen Bracher had wanted to share her passion for street art with her community. Karen said her decision to close was due to “being positioned in a less frequented location” in the town. She plans to take a short break and relocate in the near future and continue to hold regular workshops. Karen plans to also run an online gallery through the Generator website. generatorgallery.com.au 10

Kids ESS REMEMBERANCE CEREMONY The emblem that adorns the Eumundi State School uniform features the school name under the canopy of a tree. Eumundi is known for its leafy canopy and once a year the children are reminded why they were planted during an ANZAC service under the trees. The long row of memorial trees, each one representing a fallen soldier, shows the impact such loss of life can have on a small, country community. This memorial has also become a part of how Eumundi defines itself - a leafy village known for its beautiful trees. Local returned serviceman Commander Greg Molyneaux of the ADF who served for 32 years, spoke to the school community about how the ANZAC spirit was born out of the Gallipolli campaign: courage, tenacity, mateship, pride in country and humour – “Attributes evident throughout our society today... and at the core of our being.”

One of the top reasons a person checks into assisted living is because they can’t get off the toilet. And that’s because they can’t do a half rep of a bodyweight squat, so they have to get someone to care for them. Let’s focus on strength training as part of a fitness regime. Strength training is a type of physical exercise which uses resistance (being weights or bands or bodyweight) to induce muscular contraction which builds the strength, endurance, and size of skeletal muscles. Strength training can sometimes have a stigma attached to it that it is just for how we look like producing abs, vanity, the pictures in magazines and that you will end up looking like a bodybuilder. Strength training is about staying strong and maintaining lean muscle tissue as you get older. Moving around and keeping your diet on point is going to help you live longer and make your life better. As we age our muscle mass decreases and is harder to build. The things that matter when it comes to exercise is the benefits it gives you to your life. For example, the 57 year old woman who’s going through menopause and finds her metabolic rate is slowing down and she’s gained three kilos of body fat a year for no reason. If she can do 3 days a week, a 40 minute exercise session based on strength training, being weights, bodyweight or bands, she will add around 10 years on to her life and it will also mean living on her own without help. Scientists have found that strength training also has the ability to preserve bone density, which reduces the risk of osteoporosis. It also reduces the risk of heart disease, arthritis, and type 2 diabetes. Another important benefit is to help build balance and core stability. By building these two areas, it reduces considerably the risk of falls. As people get older this is a high risk and can mean a broken hip with very little chance of a full recovery. Exercise can reverse the signs and symptoms of aging. It’s not just good for your body, it’s also good for your mind, mood and memory. You are never too old to start exercising and to reap all the benefits. The best thing is that it gives you the energy to get more out of life. Health PHYSIOTHERAPY AND HEADACHES Andrea Shaw, Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist If you suffer from the sudden occurrence of a headache associated with a sore neck, or recurring headaches, particularly if they are one sided, they may be caused by a disorder of the neck. A headache arising from the neck may start as an aching or tension at the top of the neck and commonly refers to the back of the head, temples and forehead or behind the eyes. It may be accompanied by dizziness or lightheadness and is frequently worsened by neck movement or by holding the neck bent forward for long periods. The first three nerves of the neck supply the three upper joints of the neck and their supporting ligaments and muscles and they can carry the sensation of pain or aching into the head, or even the face. Physiotherapy helps by identifying and mobilising the offending joints (mobilisations or manipulation), postural advice and inner core muscle strengthening exercises (if needed).
by prolonged overhead neck extension (painting ceilings, writing on a blackboard) or sustained postures turned to one side or bent forwards (reading, sleeping on two pillows) These trigger points can be treated by your Physiotherapist with either sustained digital pressure (or dry needling) and stretching. You can also treat them yourself by kneading the muscle between your thumb and index finger to locate the TP’s (typically very tender points that may even reproduce the referred pain). Sustain a comfortable pressure for about one minute and do this 3-4 times per day. Of course, there can be many other causes for headaches and your Physiotherapist should be able to identify fairly quickly if they are not neck related and will refer you on to your Doctor for further investigation if indicated.
Headaches can also arise from Myofascial trigger points in several neck muscles. For example, the Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle (pictured) rarely hurts but can still be stiff or tight and the associated trigger points within the muscle belly can refer pain in the form of headaches, facial, jaw or ear pain, as well as cause dizziness, brain fog or blurry vision. The SCM trigger points are typically activated

Welcome back Dr Karen Macmillan Ochre Health Eumundi are very pleased to welcome back Dr Karen Macmillan from maternity leave, she will initially be working Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, commencing from 12 April. We would also like to welcome and introduce Dr Melissa Lee, who has joined our team and is working Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Pickled Cucumbers
Valda Andrews
This recipe came from a 90 year old lady from the country who always won the prize for her pickled cucumbers at many regional shows. There are times in the year when cucumbers are in abundance and this recipe is perfect for using up the surplus. Pickled cucumbers are a delight served with old fashioned, cold, corned meat or ham. It is also most enjoyable on a cracker with cheese. Ingredients
Drain but do not rinse.
• 1 red capsicum diced & cut into thin strips
Combine two cups white sugar, two cups white vinegar, 1 tsp turmeric, 2 tsp yellow mustard seeds.
• 2 med onions diced - but not too finely • 1 kg lebanese cucumbers and zucchinis (about two cucumbers & two small zucchinis) thinly sliced • ¼ cup salt Method Combine prepared vegetables and salt in a glass bowl and let stand for two hours.
If you are a new or existing patient and would like to discuss health issues with Dr Macmillan, Dr Lee or any of our GP’s, please call our friendly reception staff to make an appointment.

Pour over drained vegetables and let stand a further two hours. Transfer to a stock pot and boil for approximately five minutes or until cucumbers are crunchy but not raw. (I find it is usually eight mins). Never overcook.

effect. Follow the directions on a chicken-friendly product and use several times a week.
Poultry, such as chickens and ducks, are usually very hardy creatures and easy to keep as hassle-free companions in the backyard. Sometimes however, our little feathered friends can get a bit under the weather and succumb to some illnesses. I have found that the key to keeping poultry healthy is to keep their immunity strong. Many birds can carry diseases, but they may not show any symptoms until they become stressed. Stress can be from heat, travel, noises, living conditions, diet, worm load, parasite infestations and the loss of a flock member. Over the years I have trialled lots of different natural strategies for wellness and here are just a few.
Apple Cider Vinegar or ACV: This is a product I use on all of my chickens and my other farm animals. It is best as a monthly treatment as it alters the pH in the digestive system to discourage bad bugs and encourage the good bugs. ACV also contains vitamins and minerals and can reduce mucus levels in the respiratory tract. The rate recommended in 1 litre of water is 20 mL once a month. Following this treatment, a good probiotic is a great way to increase the good guys. I highly recommend buying unpasteurised ACV as it is gentle on the good bugs.
Garlic: The natural properties of garlic have many benefits. Including it in your chicken’s diet a couple of times a week can keep their immunity strong. The sulphur component in garlic is also a good deterrent for those nasty bugs such as lice and mites. Add half a teaspoon of crushed garlic to 2 litres of water twice a week. Diatomaceous or D.E: This amazing fine powder has extraordinary benefits, but if you intend to include it in their feed then ensure it is stock grade. It is a unique natural product that eats into the lipid layer of parasites that frequently affect chickens. This process causes the parasites to dehydrate and die. Use as a powder in the nesting box, perch and on the chickens or add to their feed.
Health Garden: If you plant some herbs along the side of your chicken run (so the chickens can’t scratch them, but can peck the leaves through the fence) they can self-medicate and be very content. The plants that I love to have available to my chooks include; comfrey, oregano, basil, lavender, rosemary, nasturtium, peppermint, wormwood, parsley. All of these plants have amazing benefits and will help to keep their immunity in check. To learn more you can come along to my Natural Chook Care course on 30 April 2pm-4pm. $10 per person. To register visit www.citychicks. com.au and under SHOP click on workshops.
Humic/Fulvic: These natural products will help to keep your flock’s immunity top notch. It is a dark black powder and can be mixed with water. Fulvic and humic acids have good broad spectrum minerals plus a gentle detoxing
trees encircling the area were actually a hindrance because of the extensive root systems the trees have. Janet was also the driving force behind the Men’s shed; she said her motivation for helping the group get off the ground was to provide a safe and busy environment for retired, unemployed or isolated men to connect with each other, learn new skills, share old skills, feel useful and be social. “It’s a place to gather for a yarn and for mateship.” “Let’s keep our men healthy and happy well into retirement,” Janet enthused. As one of the key organisers behind the community garden Anya Morgan said she felt, “We’re losing sight of who our neighbours are and we don’t socialise together any more.” Anya said the community garden is a way to take pride in our village, learn new skills and grow food for the volunteers and potentially the wider community. Anya feels it’s exciting times ahead and some of the group couldn’t wait to start digging so they’ve already planted coffee plants around the hut. First jobs on the garden list were: building compost bays, building raised garden beds, building a shed, designing the garden layout around the men’s shed, mixing healthy soil, collecting seeds and seedlings.
create a space to ‘chill’ that offers counselling services and workshops,” Louise explained. Karen Bracher, who has been running youth workshops at her Eumundi Generator Gallery, said she is keen to coordinate street art. With three years to prove the community endeavour to Council, the group are very keen keep the ball rolling. Louise is encouraging the wider community to say what they want by registering as a volunteer with one of the groups and help establish the programs. If you’d like to get involved with one or all of the groups, contact Louise, eko.consulting@ icloud.com or 0421 958 087. People are very welcome to also head along to the next EDCA meeting on Monday 9 May at Joe’s Waterhole on Memorial Dr from 7pm.

“The dream is to eventually infiltrate the whole town and replace weeds with natives, vegetables and herbs,” Anya shared. Louise Formosa spoke on behalf of Youth Group instigator and EDCA member Adrian Combes. She said they had identified a drug - dope and ice - problem in the region. “We’d like to

By the size, shape of head and beak, and construction of the nest this had to be a pair of Lewin’s Honeyeaters, Meliphaga lewinii. But Lewin’s Honeyeaters breed from August to January, not June, and make their nest only up to six metres above ground and their habitat is not usually Coastal. That led to another candidate. Nearby parts of the Maroochy River are fringed with mangroves. So Mangrove
Honeyeater, Lichenostomus fasciogularis was a possible ID. These birds do nest any time between April and December, but again, build nests up to only five metres above ground. Also, Mangrove Honeyeaters’ eggs are glossy pink with rusty spots; these eggs were matt white with faint speckles. This led to a third possibility: Brown Honeyeaters, Lichmera indistincta. The birds, of course, didn’t care about when or what they should be doing and whether our identification was correct. They just went ahead rearing the chick. In this species, only the female carries out the duties of nest-building and incubating the eggs; typically, the male is busy with important work like singing, but both take part in rearing chicks. By mid-July, with no sign of acrophobia, the fledgling launched itself from the balcony railing and flew down to the mangroves.
Community Partnerships
The “Empty Nesters” status was very brief and by September the nest had been refurbished, soon after two eggs were laid, brooded and hatched. When in doubt ask an expert – we did - and the ID of Brown Honeyeater was confirmed. The nest, eggs and yellow patch behind the hen’s ear were good clues. All three of the “possible” species are common in this area with the Brown Honeyeaters ranging over most of the Australian mainland except central and southern parts. Being honeyeaters their main diet is nectar but they also eat insects which they seek in their preferred habitat among paperbarks and mangroves. The male sits on a high branch and sings with a ventriloquistic voice to mark his territory, while the hen does all domestic work. Identifications and bird behaviour need a bit of interpretation and flexibility! They don’t all stick to the rules.
Brown Honeyeater fledgling
Brown Honeyeater Brown Honeyeaters usually nest less than two metres above the ground, but the nest in the palm is only a metre and a half above the balcony floor. And Dad actually helped with nest building – must have been henpecked. We are not the only ones at first puzzled over this ID. In 1827 the scientists who originally studied these birds had difficulty separating them. Hence the name indistincta meaning obscure.

Friends live in a 10th floor unit on the Maroochy River estuary. On their balcony with spectacular views, a potted palm adds a touch of greenery. It has also brought some little visitors. Last June a pair of small birds appeared and, oblivious to humans, proceeded to build a nest in the palm. In just a few days the nest was complete and two eggs were laid. About two weeks later one hatchling emerged and started calling for a constant food supply.
