Notes Editor’s note ... A cycle of change can be a hard thing for a small community. People leave, new people move in, businesses close then new ones open. We’re a small, tightknit region; we take it personally if a shop fails or moves or a family leaves. But change can also be invigorating and encourage new growth with fresh enthusiasm. I seem to be meeting lots of people moving to our area – leaving city life and searching for a good community in a beautiful pocket. And a number of new business ventures are opening – with word on the street that there’s more on the horizon. I’ve also heard a few people moan that the creative life force of Eumundi has died, that locals don’t support small business cont’d on pg 8

Just Love Eumundi! From this. . .

Home deliver The Green in “Eumundi 110”

to THIS! Channelling our history.

Every second Thursday, if you’ve got an hour to spare, there are about 100 homes in the new housing estates at the northern rn end of Memorial Drive (just before the Showgrounds) that need their letterboxes stuffed with some Green goodness. We will pay a cash honorarium to someone who is able to commit to this.

Last week, Mayor Mark Jamieson and Crs Greg Rogerson and Steve Robinson (pictured right) cut the ribbon on our new Eumundi Range Rd Bridge. As many Eumundi folk will recall, originally it was planned that this bridge would be standard concrete and steel construction with no bearing to our built environment history. But, after community consultation, ation, Council upscaled its committment to this piece of infrastructure and we now have a bridge that will not only serve our traffic needs for the next 100 years, but also has recycled timbers from the old bridge re-purposed into a lovely new welcome sign as well as a delightful rest area. The pedestrian / bikeway’s distinctive hardwood capped balustrade features a bright ochre colour that refects the rare Pycnoporus Coccineus (Scarlet Bracket) fungus found in this part of Maroochy River.

Think of it as a fun new paper round!

And, we are seeking more carpark volunteers

If you are part of a community organisation that seeks a reliable means of raising funds for any worthwhile project - for a minimum 2 hour shift, you’ll be fully trained and your group can earn $22 per volunteer / per hour greeting visitors to the markets and helping them park their car on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. No experience necessary!

M a rket Spot lig ht HE AVENLY BLOOMS Clio Kross and Indigo Whyatt, Year 4 ESS Ignite English. Where the flowers are bright and the sweet scent of roses fill the air is where you’ll find Nat Evans in her gorgeous garden. Heavenly Blooms is a wedding florist and stall at the Original Eumundi Markets with all of the flowers your heart could desire. Inspiration fills the air from the bottom of the stem to the top of the petals. Nat said that, “It comes from the change of nature and all of the trees dancing in the wind.” This gifted florist is pleased with her beautiful business and enjoys watching how people feel when they leave with her stunning bouquets. Nat finds floristry a pleasure because exquisite flower arrangements are her passion. She also loves to help couples create their dream weddings with her wild and different bouquets. Nat picks most of her flowers from her Verrierdale garden. She loves roses and her favourite

colours to use are vibrant purples, light maroons and yellows. She finds inspiration in her mother’s garden and on rare occasions will also pick flowers from there. Nat’s choice of floristry is what really inspires us. Her whimsical bunches are colourful and beautifully created. Nat’s passion for flowers is reflected in her arrangements, as each bouquet and posy is unique and often displayed in recycled jars wrapped in lace and fabric remnants. Indigo shared, “I love arranging flowers and I hope I have a florist shop which is as wonderful as hers.” heavenlyblooms.com.au.

Community SUNSHINE COAST EMBRACES SOLAR The Sunshine Coast Council announced that the 15MW solar farm, covering 24 hectares of Council owned land at Valdora (located between North Arm, Verrierdale and Yandina Creek), has been given the green light and Downer Utilities awarded the tender. Mayor Mark Jamieson said Council is planning to offset its entire electricity consumption from green energy by 2017 and is striving to become the nation’s first local government to build a utility scale, grid-connected solar farm. “[This] will be the biggest solar farm in Queensland - and the fifth largest solar farm in the nation,” the Mayor said. “That includes our administration buildings, swimming pools, performance venues and community centres, our holiday parks, libraries, galleries and our sport facilities,” Mayor Jamieson explained. Jock Howard, owner of Eumundi’s SPS Energy, explained that this project demonstrates the cost effectiveness of generating and transporting energy on a third party

distributor and is a precedent for further opportunities at a local and national scale. “This outcome required the cooperation of both Energex and Diamond Energy to overcome considerable regulatory roadblocks and financial risk management - but proves what can be achieved with good will from all parties.” Mr Howard added, “With the roadblocks clearly identified it should now prove possible to amend regulations and legislation to lower the obstacles for entry to other proponents and hopefully lead to the reticulation of privately generated power within precincts, towns and cities.” Division 9 Cr Stephen Robinson, who is responsible for the Economic Development and Innovation Portfolio, said the initiative would provide real savings for council and ratepayers. “Naturally any savings forecast includes the up-front build costs, in addition to the ongoing operational costs for the farm,” Cr Robinson said.

An artist’s impression of the proposed Valdora Solar Farm. Jock Howard contends that the Coast has few natural assets that can create more jobs. “We have sunshine, agriculture and tourism. Without coal or metalliferous ores in commercial quantities - no heavy industry or transport hub - the Sunshine Coast has to look to other forms of industry to slow the export of youth and talent by providing value-add industries.” Mr Howard maintains the Valdora Solar Farm development will push the region into a leading position in the race to

nurture clean-tech industries, helped by the area’s branding as clean, green and sustainable. Six years ago, when the project was first mooted, Jock Howard was interviewed by Channel 7 at Valdora and stated that the project was ahead of its time, optimistic and bound to encounter hurdles. “I also indicated that the elegant logic of solar energy would ultimately prevail - I would love to see a copy of the tape because I think I could then prove I told you so!”

EUMUNDI POLICE UPDATE Sergeant Brooke Flood Ph 5442 8222 I would like to introduce myself. My name is Sergeant Brooke Flood. I am the newly appointed officer in charge of Eumundi Police Station. I am thrilled to obtain this position and be a part of this fantastic community. I moved to Eumundi about two weeks ago from Tara, where I was the officer in charge of police for the past three years. I completed my first year of policing in Noosa, and have served in Kingaroy, Emerald, Cunnamulla and Dalby.

From left: Cr Greg Rogerson, Mayor Mark Jamieson and Cr Steve Robinson. Eumundi Range Road’s revamped bridge and new town welcome sign was officially recently with Mayor Mark Jamieson, Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson and Division 9 Councillor Steve Robinson officiating, along with community group representatives in attendance. The whole structure cost $1,650,000 to complete. Eumundi Community Combined Organisation (ECCO) manager

I have moved here with my partner Jason who is a builder, and my three children who are attending Eumundi State School. If you have any queries or concerns you would like to discuss, please feel free to call the station. Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher said, “How great to see the outcome of the community and Council working together to create a new bridge that channels that ol’ Eumundi spirit”.

Eumundi Police Station is undergoing a few changes over the next couple of months. We are presently in the process of being upgraded from a two officer station to a four officer station. Senior Constable Craig Hughes

has recently transferred to Eumundi Police from Nambour, Senior Constable Blair Doran will continue at Eumundi and a fourth officer will commence duty in the coming month. Our Administrative Officer Fiona will be opening our counter on Mondays, Tuesdays and every second Friday. If you attend the station and the counter is closed, please use the blue phone on the front wall and speak to our call takers. Although the front counter of the station is not open at all times, police are ALWAYS available for jobs requiring police attention. If you contact the police station and an officer in not in the station, the phone call will be diverted through to Maroochydore Communications who will pass your information onto one of us, either to attend to your call right away or to attend at a later negotiated time. You will ALWAYS get a response to any serious or life threatening jobs as a priority.

Kids NASS EXCELS

Kelly Edgar, NASS Principal

North Arm State School (NASS) recently received a congratulatory email from The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority’s (ACARA) CEO Mr Robert Randall. His email highlighted the magnitude of the school’s National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) gains in Reading and Numeracy, as the students progressed from Year 3 to Year 5, compared to similar schools. This year, NASS was one of only twenty-one schools in Queensland to achieve official recognition for the accelerated growth in their students’ results. Mr Randall congratulated myself and the school community for our significant achievements in both Reading and Numeracy. Mr Randall said that NASS had been identified by using four main pieces of data: the

substantial growth in NAPLAN scores compared to previous years, schools with similar students based on the Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA) level, other students at similar NAPLAN average score start points and 70% or greater of the Year 3 cohort in 2013 sitting the test again in Year 5 in 2015. As ACARA is responsible for Australia’s national reporting program (NAPLAN), to receive this acknowledgement from Mr Randall confirming that our school is demonstrating substantially above average gains in our NAPLAN results was news that I was thrilled to share with my school community. Although I can’t pinpoint any one contributing factor, the last few years we have had a major focus on the teaching of Reading and Numeracy. All teachers refined their skills in

these areas through professional development and coaching opportunities. Whilst we have high achieving students that set themselves learning goals, we have also heavily invested in our extension and support programs for students that require additional assistance. We have a truly supportive school community that values high attendance rates, the

importance of homework and they actively participate in the volunteer programs. There is no doubt that our staff were a huge part of our success. The strong relationships that are formed between staff and students alike really made a difference to student learning. When you feel happy, supported and cared for in a rich learning environment, children learn.

Health NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE There’s a fiercely burning argument among doctors, public health experts, civil libertarians, industrialists and politicians. About e-cigarettes. These devices have been around for about a decade. They were invented in China by a pharmacist called Hon Lik, who quit smoking after his father died of lung cancer. While withdrawing from his own habit, he devised an electronic alternative to the cigarette: the e-cigarette. E-cigarettes are powered by lithium batteries, rather than burning tobacco. A heating element converts a solution of e-liquid to an aerosol, which the user draws in and exhales. E-liquid contains propylene glycol and glycerine, which make an impressive plume of white vapour (these chemicals are also used in smoke machines in cheap discos). But vapour isn’t smoke, and using e-cigarettes isn’t smoking. It’s vaping. If fog juice was all they contained, e-cigarettes wouldn’t be such a big deal. But there’s more, of course. Flavours like butterscotch and turkish delight

Dr Jo Deverill, Emergency Medicine Specialist

and raspberry. Vivid colours to match. And - assuming you are buying this in a country in which it is legal - nicotine. Now if you were devising an alternative to smoking, why on earth would you include nicotine? Well, it provides a hit, boosting the brain’s reward centre, and causing a pleasant, happy feeling. And for people who are giving up smoking, it satisfies their nicotine cravings, because hey - this is addictive stuff. And this is where the argument starts.

the heart, lungs, eyes, bones and gonads. Should we be encouraging this? Mixing it with sweet flavours and colours? To get the kids into this stuff? For now, e-cigarettes containing nicotine are illegal in Australia.

So if you are after a safe legal hit, I recommend you climb Mount Cooroora at dawn, and deeply inhale a mixture of oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen oxide vapour - otherwise known as fresh air.

H E A LT H N E W S

On the one side, it is pretty much beyond dispute that e-cigarettes are less harmful than smoking tobacco. Cigarette smoke contains about 250 poisonous chemicals, a good 70 of which cause cancer. E-cigarettes are relatively benign. So if they help smokers give up the fags - surely that’s a good thing? Think of the lives this could save!

Health DEAR BODY….

Siona Howard

We have been together quite a few years now and I find myself sitting here thinking about how miraculous and resilient you are. I was just chopping up some lunch for my children and sliced my finger with a sharp knife. I know you will heal. Some Savlon and a Bandaid and I am good to go. You do the rest without a thought from me. You have healed many things for me over the years...a broken arm, a dislocated shoulder, bumps, scratches, bruises, sprains, headaches and heartaches. You have put up with me when I have fed you the wrong food, drank too much wine, starved you, overfed you or dehydrated you. I’m sorry. I know how much you love it when I nourish you well.

can beat with pride, my legs can carry me and my arms can hug people. I am so grateful for the extraordinary capacity my brain has to transform thoughts into a reality which supports my life and my goals. I love how it connects to every inch of my body without having to be told what to do...that is so cool. My intuition, my nervous system and my adrenaline support and guide me every day.

Finally, you carried my two beautiful babies without a worry and delivered them naturally without any pain relief. What a gift! You are always there to keep me safe. Thank you for taking this journey with me. It is time to nurture you and honour you for what you truly are... incredible. Love, Siona Howard (your live in mate) xo inspirationalsanctuary.com.au

Over 50 years ago I graduated as a Home Science Teacher and taught for a few years before marrying. We then went travelling overseas where I taught at Nauru Island and London. Returning to Australia, I then became the Home Economist for the Queensland Butter Board, giving cookery classes, judging bake-offs, recipe testing and writing. I have always been passionate about food and have been known to have recipe books on my bedside table. I find now that I like to make some of the “old” recipes that have been tried and tested over many years. 14

Invasive potato vine The Aerial Yam/Potato Vine (Dioscorea bulbifera) - not edible! This photo shows just how invasive this exotic is, smothering out our riparian bushland. The tubers are easily washed throughout bushland with rainfall, originating from an out of control back yard plant. The potato like tubers must be bagged and there are many! Don’t be confused with our Native Yam (Dioscorea transversa) which does not produce potatoes on the stem and indigenous people will dig deep down to collect the edible roots; which take some effort to prepare before being edible. The native yam has slender heart shaped alternative leaves, also an important food supply for several caterpillar species. Bush tucker foods can be interesting and tasty but with

many different, similar species and special ways to prepare bush tucker I recommend always trying them with an expert in the field. Thankfully this is not one of the weeds our small group of volunteers need to tackle during our working bees but if you would like to learn more on invasive plants and how to remove them from your own property we would very much welcome extra volunteers that can make it along. The next Eumundi Bushcare group working bee to be held at the Eumundi Sunken Gardens, Pacey St, will be Sunday 22 May, 9.30am to 12pm. Cuppa and morning tea provided. Outdoors TA P P I N G I N T O N AT U R E ’ S B E A U T Y A N D E N E R G Y For me, one of the joys inherent in my ongoing work as the vegetable gardener at Sunspace Café in Doonan is the opportunity to observe how much pleasure other people also derive from it. I sense that apart from being touched by the beauty and energy of the garden, we human beings draw soul nourishment from a connection with the source of our physical nourishment. In some cases, it may be just reigniting memories of a parent’s or grandparent’s garden, but I think in all of us there is a hunger to get back to the essence of things, particularly at a time when so many forces are at work to keep us locked in a world of gadgets and technology. Another source of joy and encouragement is in meeting so many beautiful, young people, whether back packers or WWOOFers from overseas, or our home grown local kids, who have a passion to work with and care for the land. It’s so important to re-invigorate the land and rural communities

with their youthful energy and enthusiasm. I believe people can also experience the quality of “aliveness” in a well-functioning biodynamic or organic property. Certainly there are cycles of life and death in individual crops, but there is an overall process of enhancement happening. Life builds upon life! The energy pouring into the earth from the sun and stars around us is unlimited and the gardener works with processes which enhances this energy flow. This is in stark contrast to conventional agriculture, where so often the picture is one of waging warfare against whatever pest or disease is invading at the time. The toxic chemicals that some farmers resort to are only dealing with the symptoms and not the cause, which is really an ailing farm organism. This can almost inevitably be traced back to lifeless or out of balance soils. Thankfully nature, like the human body, is remarkably

Rob Birse, Biodynamic gardener

resilient and able to bounce back given sufficient time and correct remedies. I firmly believe that managed with awareness and provided water is available, virtually any soils can be made productive. This is of huge significance to the planet when we realize that through the miracle of photosynthesis, every plant from the tallest tree to the slenderest blade of grass is extracting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and using it to build organic matter in the soil while also producing oxygen for us to breathe! So, even on the small scale of our backyard gardens, through enhancing fertility and growing more plants we are making a difference to the planet. Happy gardening! N atu re N otes DETERRING BRUSH TURKEYS & O T H E R C R E AT U R E S Helen Hepburn We moved to Eumundi 15 years ago. It was several years before we started getting brush turkeys (BT) in large numbers. We really don’t mind the females scratching about. We are happy to share our yard. However, the last few years we have been plagued by several large males wanting to build mounds in our established and much loved garden beds. Both our large gardens are dual purpose - apart from housing rainforest plants and shrubs they also take our treated water which is dispersed by piping onto these two gardens. Battling these birds and their massive mounds - either my husband or I were going to end up in hospital. As wellknown Naturalist Rick Nattrass famously said years ago, “they are the only birds I know of who

could put a person in hospital without laying a beak on them.” Yes, I concur… but perhaps a cassowary mound might be a close second! Two years ago a new young BT arrived and immediately started large scale earth works. This fast working serial pest took over our lives. Remembering that nests can be four metres across and more than one metre high this is not a small quibble in the garden! Daily we were on guard to see him off and return the soil to where it belonged. One night I hatched up a scheme which I knew would be expensive to implement … but what the heck it is cheaper than a funeral! The plan involved plastic mesh available from larger hardware stores, some fine stakes and cable ties. I bought about six

rolls of the mesh. I snip the mesh into three or four sections and using the cable ties make circles. Using the stakes, I secure the circles in position (see photo) and tap the stakes into the ground using a small hammer and almost cover the proposed nest site. In the photo I have now planted out many small palms to fill the area as it’s been a hotly contested site for many years. This has worked a treat and I find it better than say a tarp on the ground as I find the male just simply scratches even more

soil and mulch on top, and in my case, just the corners of the blue tarp were visible after a few hours work! This mesh can then be deployed elsewhere at the tap of a hammer and I now surround many plants with these crop circles. In the second photo I am protecting my mother’s much loved hippeastrums. This mesh is fantastic and can be used to protect seedlings by shaping it into a tunnel. The BT season will begin in winter - and I’m ready for it!

LETTERS S M O K E F R E E PA R K P L AY We moved to Verrierdale over two years ago and frequent the town for bread, fuel and odd bods. One of the major attrac tions for us is the park as we have a toddler and 16 month old twin girls. Most certainly Caplick Park is one of the best on the Coast as it is safe and friendly for little ones. Just this Tuesday we set off for a pie and play in the park. On our arrival there was a man smoking, sitting on one of the many chairs that surround the park, we put up with this. Another 10 minutes later two more cigarettes were lit which forced us to leave. I ask why is there no signage to prevent the inconsiderate from breathing toxic air into my children. It is proven secondhand smoke can be more damaging than firsthand particularly for little ones. Why has my town which is meant to be all about family and our children allowing this, as this hasn’t been the first time it has happened to us. I too believe in freedom of choice and if someone wants to consume

tobacco it’s up to them, but when I go to my local park I believe I have a choice not to consume tobacco smoke. I understand even having signs threatening fines would have little effec t on ones who are too lazy to put their butts in a bin, rather they flick them onto the bark in the park. Wish there were stronger laws to protect children from unwanted and unnecessary pollution that it seems we have no control over. No control in the sense we, “the non-smoker” have to move on while the “smoker” goes on with life blissfully unaware of the damage they have on others. Thumb’s up to Eumundi Green. Arlo Kinnaird, Verrierdale.

EQUIPMENT STOLEN FROM YA N D I N A C O M M U N I T Y GARDENS On Monday 2 May, amidst a Labour Day Working Bee at Yandina Community Gardens, volunteers discovered that the side gate and shed door had been forced open by unwelcome visitors over the weekend. Garden Coordinators Penny Foster and Linda Mahony discovered that the group’s brush cutter, chain saw, power drill and jerry cans had been stolen. President Michelle Parry said, “we were having such a productive day preparing the gardens for our Open Day on Sunday 15 May, so it came as a great disappointment to learn that we had been burgled”. Michelle has posted the following letter on Facebook hoping that the much needed equipment will be returned to the community garden: To the person/s who broke into Yandina Community Gardens on the weekend & took our brush cutter, chain saw, power drill and jerry cans, We would really appreciate it if you would return our equipment as our volunteers need it to maintain the gardens. YCG is a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers who give their time and skills to provide a place for the public to visit and learn how to grow their own food and be healthier and have less impact on the earth. We provide a community space where people can belong and feel valued.

LIVING ON THE FRINGE OF TWO COUNCILS I am wondering what the positives are being on the fringe of two councils? I live in a part of Doonan that is governed by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. I have several concerns regarding being in this shire.

The equipment we use at YCG is donated, paid for by grants or paid for through funds we raise through the work of our volunteers (e.g. propagating the plants we sell).

In 21 years I have not seen one extra bus stop put along the Noosa Eumundi Rd and we pay a levy for transport. It would have been a good idea to put a public bus stop in near the petrol station. This could be part of a route that would take patients to the new hospital at Kawana as the Nambour Hospital is going to

If you took our equipment because you are having financial difficulty, perhaps we can help you by providing you with some produce from our gardens – you can contact me by messaging this page or emailing info@ yandinacommunitygardens. com.au

NOTICES

Also the Noosa Council provides a rubbish pick up now and again, we don’t get that here. We only get Noosa newspapers so I didn’t really see much information at all about the recent election and the candidates. We don’t have a newspaper that covers our shire’s issues that gets delivered to us. When I went to do a pre-poll vote at the Christian Outreach Centre I got told to go to Coolum or Nambour.

LOST! Black heifer has gone missing in the Eumundi Range/ Sunrise Road area. If anyone sees or has seen a wayward heifer, please contact Tanya on 0427 756 187. Thank you.

The roads don’t seem to be as maintained as well in this region either - or the weeds. The potholes just get patched up. I do have concerns about the expansion of the airport too if this gets running at full capacity, how much noise this will bring to this area?

Have a lost pet or something to give away to a good home? Send through brief details and we’ll print or post on FB for free. editor@eumundigreen.com.au

I love where I live, but there is a room for improvement with the services. Regards, S Kenrick, Doonan.
