Notes Editor’s note ... I’ve had a few people say to me lately that they live here not for the summer months but for the weather during the rest of the year. This autumn of endless blue skies has seen such a mild drop in temperature – just enough to slip on a pair of slippers and throw a blanket on the bed. The only thing to put a real dampener on this picture-perfect weather is the arrival of the dreaded cold and flu season. It’s already filling the medical centre and spreading throughout our schools. I’ve spent the whole edit this issue sniffling and blowing. But it’s nothing that lying in the grass and feeling the warmth of the sun seep through my skin won’t fix. This issue we celebrate our region with our new seasonal Hinterland Living Supplement which you’ll find nestled in the centre of this issue.

TA K E A WAY W I N D O W AT S U N S PA C E Sunspace in Doonan now has a takeaway hatch thanks to the efforts of Hideyoshi Wakamatsu who built the new feature using bits and pieces he found around the café. Owner Tom said, “Hideyoshi cut one of our heavy shelves, found some old bed slats, The counter top is from the original German club some 30 years ago - he was really set on making it a sustainable project by only using found pieces already on site.” Sunspace takeaway curries, soups and pizza will start in June.

Sgt Brooke Flood, Eumundi Police The past two weeks have seen an increase in property related crime with a shed on Memorial Drive being unlawfully entered and a small amount of money and a set of keys stolen. A vehicle was stolen from a residence at Verrierdale and a council depot was unlawfully entered and damaged. Police have also received ongoing complaints in relation to people being on school grounds outside school hours. It is an offence for anyone to be on the school grounds without permission outside of school hours. Police are actively conducting patrols both on foot and in vehicles in and around our schools outside school hours and if children or adults are found

on the grounds, they will be prosecuted.
New Term Well it has certainly been an incredibly hectic few weeks since the recent local government elections, with meetings aplenty about the council budget and the future direction and strategy of council. On a personal side of things, it’s been a difficult time due to the recent passing of my mother.
Do you know what your children were doing on the weekend? On Sunday afternoon two children were observed throwing sticks and rocks at cars on Eumundi Range Road. I don’t need to tell anyone just how dangerous this type of behaviour is and the potential for these type of actions to be fatal. There has been at least one vehicle damaged due to these children. Police have received a good description of the offenders and if you believe you may know these two children, or had your vehicle damaged on Sunday 15 May 2016, please call the Eumundi Police Station.
I’m really looking forward to this new four-year term as your Divisional Councillor in order to achieve some terrific projects that will benefit our community and the region as a whole. Open to both boys and girls of all ages, entrants participate with fundraising and as the show representative at the show ball, sashing animals, doing interviews and engaging with the community. It was absolutely fantastic to officially open the new $1.9 million bridge on Eumundi Range Road recently. Mayor Mark Jamieson and Cr Stephen Robinson joined me for the opening of the bridge that is almost 6m wider than the former timber bridge and includes 1.2m wide road shoulders and a 2m pedestrian walkway on the eastern side. The new bridge also includes a feature balustrade that is orange ochre. This colour was
chosen after close consultation with local community representatives and is symbolic of the scarlet bracket fungi which is found along the creek banks in and around Eumundi – the way the railings overhang the bridge mimic the way fungus grows along fallen trees in the bush and along the creek banks. This project also includes a welcome statement that was constructed nearby using recycled bridge timber and a shelter for people who walk along the Eumundi Range Road. Sculpture adds spirit I recently attended the unveiling of the Spirit Orb sculpture near the amphitheatre. This striking 2 metre high sphere was the winning piece in the 2015 Eumundi Sculpture Prize and is a tribute to the 20 Eumundi soldiers who went to war and didn’t return home. Within seconds of its unveiling, Spirit Orb was set upon by local children who couldn’t wait to climb all over it! I’d like to sing the praises of the Chair of the Foundation for Arts and Culture Eumundi Michael Carney, along with Louise Formosa and the ECCO Board for their great collaborative efforts to install this terrific artwork in a location where it can be fully appreciated by the local community.

SENS AT IO N A L SCUL P T URE S Jake Walker, Year 4, ESS Ignite English Tap, tap, tap! If you go to Eumundi markets you will hear Imron Abdul sculpting away at his amazing masterpieces. Imron has been at the markets for 14 years and has been creating his sculptures since he was nine years old with his mother! He doesn’t just make these sculptures for visual appeal but also creates them because they have significant meanings. “My sculptures represent: well coming in the mornings for your day, offerings for your souls, protection, meditation and natural feelings,” explained Imron. Wondering how big his biggest sculpture is? 3.2 meters tall! The talent behind these grand monuments is outstanding and would be such a challenge to make. Imron believes in tradition and explains that, “I want to sustain the old-fashion ground roots of my stone creations.” Using his Indonesian heritage and creative flair, there’s no stopping this master.
When visiting the market recently, the Eumundi school children watched Imron intently as he applied his skills using tools to mould his designs. The materials used for his statues are: silk stone, Hebel stone and wood. In the future, Imron would like to go back to teaching people how to sculpt stone and create beautiful pieces of art but for now he is kept busy with the demand of his art works. Time, effort and passion are the main ingredients for the success of his beautiful work. We thoroughly enjoyed interviewing Imron with his warm nature and look forward to seeing more of his unique creations. 5448 3474
On the last Friday of every month the SevGEN Indigenous Corporation initiative is holding a Blackmarket at the Pavilion Market, off Memorial Dr, from 11am-5pm. Stallholders are keen to trial their cultural and creative entrepreneurial ventures. ARTISAN TWILIGHT MARKET The artisans and creatives Twilight Market will be held this Sunday 29 May from 4-8pm at Sunspace Café, Beddington Rd Doonan. Original Eumundi Markets have transferred custodianship of the Australian Body Art Festival to the township of Cooroy. Of the move, market operations manager Jan Ammitzboll explained that, “OEM are presently concentrating more on their core business which is the market,” she clarified, “Whilst Body Art is a wonderful event it falls outside OEM’s core business. “We’re very keen to see it remain in our hinterland region and Danielle has a great history with the event so I know it’s in good hands,” Jan said. Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President and Firefly Solutions publicist Danielle Taylor, who was previously event manager for the Body Art Carnivale, will be back at the helm from 2017 organising the event.

Danielle said she’ll be looking to partner with Cooroy community organisations and has already had interest from volunteers. “Our plan is to start back at grass roots, so our first step will be to talk to the body artists about what their preferences are for things such as dates and themes,” Danielle explained. “We are aiming for a 2017 event and will provide updates once we have firmed up some of the plans,” she said.

Music THE LITTLE SINGERS NEST Some performers play beautiful music. Some performers embody beautiful music. Jeunae Rogers, local poet and musician, falls into the latter category! To watch Jeunae perform is a magical experience. Her giving of herself to the music and audience feels like an intimate and almost sacred offering. Jeunae’s original music features in her guise as JuJu Bom but she also performs in a number of jazz ensembles. She is an active musician on the Sunshine Coast and beyond as a jazz/ soul/blues singer, improvisation artist, original songwriter, flute,

guitar, ukulele player and voice facilitator. Jeunae grew up on the Sunshine Coast and spent the majority of her youth singing while exploring the beautiful Black Mountain bush. “Music has been one of my greatest life’s loves - Listening to the morning symphonies of the birds and the summer cicada trills of the evening.” She added, “The frogs serenading of the rains, the howling wild dogs in the valleys, the gentle strum of my dad’s guitar and the warming lull of my mother’s hum.”
Jeunae describes her life’s passion as bringing art and the freedom of expression to the world through music. Her latest venture is ‘The Little Singers Nest’; guiding young ones and their mums/dads in a weekly session of song, finger play, movement and instrument exploration. “Children are often dancing before they can walk and singing before they can talk.” Jeunae shared, ”Music is imperative in the sustainability and health of a flourishing, thriving community and children know this in their cells!”
The Little Singers Nest embrace songs that are in rhythm and reflective with the seasons. It is intended for children ages 8 months to 3 years and the weekly sessions will be held at Sunspace Café, on Beddington Rd in Doonan. Facebook: Jeunae.

Eumundi (4562) is a region in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, about 110km north of Brisbane. Eumundi is in the federal electorate of Fairfax. The growing population of Eumundi was 1,924 (in the 2011 Census) with a population density of 0.37 persons per hectare.

Autumn is a lovely time of year in our region with crisper nights and warm days of blue skies, green hills and cool breezes – and with the beach just down the road, the hinterland is idyllic. There’s a constant influx of new people leaving the cities, drawn to our region’s amazing location, creative vibe and farming backbone.
Settlement of the area dates from the 1850s, with land used mainly for cattle grazing and timber-getting. Population was minimal until the early 1880s. The township of Eumundi was established in 1890, with growth through to the early 1900s, spurred by the opening of the railway line in 1891. The most significant development occurred from the post-war years. The population increased from the early 1990s as new dwellings were added. Eumundi is a rural area which includes the township. Rural land is used largely for farming.

Choosing a Real Estate Agent
A real estate agent provides advice. They take the emotion from selling and get you the very best price. And this advice needs to be sound because we’re often dealing with the biggest asset a Seller might have. Sometimes this may coincide with an emotional period in a Sellers life, for example divorce of death of a partner, possible financial pressure, all of which may be asked to be quietly absorbed in-case it influences the price achieved. We are not valuers but are often judged and employed, on the value we imply we can achieve. And that’s a tricky one, because unless we’re writing the cheque, it’s all a bit unknown. Some agents work alone, some within an office but there are a few questions as a prospective vendor you should possibly be asking your agent, and these are: “Of your last 10 ten sold properties in the area how long were they on the market, what was your appraisal, how did this differ from the sale price and can I please have the telephone number of the seller so I can call them and see how they rate your performance.” Your chosen agent will probably offer this up front. ‘The appraisal’ is the agents estimate value of sale price based on recent sales and competition on the market. Some agents will try to influence this by “buying the listing” and suggesting a higher price than they believe a buyer will pay but most sellers now have access to the internet as buyers do, and can work this out in advance. Days on market is sometimes influenced by the property, the price, the promotion of it or the presentation and this is easily explained. Imagine on acreage, before we get to whether it has a dishwasher or gas stove, the buyer has to work out whether they want timbered land, or cleared, whether it’s flat or sloped, double storey or single, brick or weather board….so it can take a bit longer than in town. Above all though is the trust factor. Will your agent work in your best interest? Do they return calls, will they work weekends and out of hours to fit in with a working buyer and will they ask for just that little bit more money from a buyer. A smooth sale is a good sale and need not be stressful. We are selling a lifestyle to an acreage buyer not just a home.

Changing face of hinterland architecture

A style of architecture can define a region. It can also herald an era of prosperity for a town. In the past, Eumundi and its hinterland surrounds have been renowned for beautiful Queenslander architecture, with many of its houses and shops built by pioneering families such as the Arundell’s who colonised the area in the 1880’s. But the face of hinterland architecture is experiencing an exciting change that will impact on how the region and townships are perceived over the next 100 years. Three local architects at the forefront of this evolution in residential design are David Teeland of Teeland Architects, Dan Sparks of Sparks Architects and Jolyon Robinson of Robinson’s Architects. The trio are attracting accolades nationally and internationally for their exceptional designs, and as they all live and work locally, they share a vested interest in shaping this region they call home. Dan explained he was attracted to living here because of “its incredible natural beauty, passionate and community minded people, and the opportunities to build on and evolve a strong architectural tradition.” For Jolyon the region felt like his natural home, so when he returned from studying and living in various cities he embraced the opportunity to assume the mantle of the architecture firm his father Ken had worked hard establishing in the 1980’s. And for Dave, it was holidaying here as a child that always tugged at his heart. “I never wanted to leave; since then I have always wanted to live here permanently,” he shared. The architects find inspiration for their designs in the hinterland’s heritage and Dan - who spent the early years of his career working with legendary Sunshine Coast architect

Books C H A R L O T T E W O O D ’ S N AT U R A L WAY O F T H I N G S My book club has just finished discussing Charlotte Wood’s, The Natural Way of Things. (Proud to say we picked it before it won the 2016 Stella Prize!) Looks like the Stella Prize will yet again provide me with a favourite book of the year. The Natural Way of Things is a dystopian novel, set in the near future, in which 10 seemingly ordinary women are forcefully and secretly removed to an isolated and impenetrable location in the Australian outback where they are brutally and systematically reduced to a powerless state without any understanding of the reason. When one woman says she needs to know where she is, she is told, “Oh sweetie, you need to know what you are.” And that is the point. What are they? The mystery is unwound as each woman learns this for herself as delusions are swept away. Some emerge more themselves than when they went in. Although the book sounds grim, it absolutely isn’t. The writing is wonderful throughout, especially the descriptions of the landscape, the changing relationships and the power of the story itself. One of those books that takes you in from the first page and doesn’t let go even after you finally put it down. If it seems extreme at times, it helps to know the background. As Margaret Atwood- who Wood has on

occasion been compared to - says, such a dystopia involves, ”Things that really could happen but just hadn’t completely happened when the authors wrote.” This complex, multi-layered book emerged from Wood’s deep anger at what happened to girls at the Hay Institution in the 1960’s who were blamed and severely punished for their experiences of sexual abuse and assault. Wood said, “Nothing that happens in my books is anywhere near what happened to those girls.” She developed a heighted awareness of an emerging pattern of victim blaming and silencing in high profile cases. Some of these cases are alluded to in the 10 women’s histories. In her Stella Prize acceptance speech, Charlotte Wood lists some of her reasons for writing: “To make something beautiful. Why should we add grains into our diet and how do we include these interesting grains and seeds into our everyday menu? It is one thing to buy a readymade product, it’s another thing to start using the grains, flours and seeds in our regular menu rotations. Below are a few easy suggestions on how and when to use these grains. Most of them are available either as the whole grain, in a puffed form, or as a flour. Why is important to have these grains in our diet? As food becomes more refined it loses much of its nutrient content, so adding variety adds many essential nutrients back in - in an interesting and tasty way

salads, soups or with a curry. Try a traditional tabouleh with quinoa instead of bulgar wheat.

These are two of my favourite breakfast recipes that are a nice way to start the day with a healthy twist and add that extra bit of nutrition and variety. Super Grain Porridge • 1 cup oats • 1 Tbs quinoa flakes • ½ Tbs coconut sugar

In the AFL under 12’s Sunshine Coast North Interschool Grand Final, St Thomas More and Good Shepherd Lutheran College (GSLC) boys went head to head with GSLC proving the victors on the day. The girl’s grand final saw the St Andrews team play St Thomas More (A Team), with St Thomas winning the match.
At the recent Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod at The Events Centre Caloundra, Dance Form in Cooroy represented their region and competed against over 2000 young dancers – many full-time professional students – who performed on two stages over a week. The 60 dancers ranging from six to 18 years old performed in three performance troupes; junior, intermediate and senior, and all dancers came away with a highly commended. Principal dance teacher Jaymee Haack said

Gabriel Poole - shared, “We are lucky in that there is a wonderful history of good architecture here in the region to draw upon.” David agreed, “We are inspired by both local and international architecture, however our focus is on contemporary design that has a timeless quality and responds to the local lifestyle and climate.” As work becomes more mobile, giving people the freedom to choose where they live, there’s a growing influx of urbanites in search of a simpler life with a beautiful view. Explaining the demand for modern architecture in the hinterland, Jolyon stated that many of his clients already know about his work before even moving to the region. “Prior to even making contact they have already done their research into architecture and know the aesthetic they like.” David also believes this increased appreciation for good architecture will see the region embrace new designs that suit the local environment and lifestyle with greater confidence. Access to architecture worldwide also impacts on the influences of these local architects. Dan explained that with such a digitally connected world, regional architects’ inspiration can come from further afield. “Computer modelling of both design and climatic conditions as well as fabrication is also rapidly evolving, and this is inevitably changing the way we, as
‘regional’ architects, not only explore and test ideas, but also position ourselves amongst a larger global architectural conscience,” Dan shared. Although Dan, Dave and Jolyon all have individual styles, they share a love of elegant design, all use building materials in novel ways, and share common building constraints: sloping blocks, hot summers, flooding, making the most of a view, designing around trees and site access. But Jolyon explained it’s these challenges that provide the impetus to come up with exciting creative solutions. Dan also views impediments as an opportunity to find “innovative and beautiful design outcomes.” And Dave feels his biggest challenge is “finding a language for the building that is right for its place that speaks of and to the land... whilst addressing the various climatic and topographic conditions, and, of course, meeting the clients brief!” Their clients are generally interested in innovative, sustainable architecture. But where former eco-design was about a building disappearing into the landscape, the architecture of Sparks, Teeland and Robinson adds to the view, like a sculpture rising out of a ridge or appearing in a clearing of dense bush. Their designs are elegantly simple constructs that connect the indoors with the outdoors. David’s latest project is for a Tinbeerwah property at the top of a range that looks out to the ocean. The house is designed 15

Jolyon was keen to instil a pared back elegance for his residential projects on Caplick Way in Eumundi and found inspiration in South East Asian design and modern architecture, but with a nod to the Queenslander ‘Avonlea’ that stood on the property previously. Dan Spark’s tent house project in Verrierdale, which has attracted the attention of Grand Designs Australia, embraces his interest in South East Asian and South American design and eco architecture. The three men are good friends and share a comradery, often inspiring and celebrating each other’s achievements. David surmised, “I like to think that we, collectively, work hard at raising the bar for the architecture of the region – which is no small task given the calibre of our architectural heritage and the quality of architects who have understandably chosen the Sunshine Coast within which to

It is both encouraging and inspiring to see the work that Dan and Jolyon are creating as it is a testament to this,” David shared. It might be mites? The Belli Park Rural Fire Service was established in the 1970s to help protect the Belli Park and surrounding areas from bushfires. At its peak, there were about 15 active members with a great number of support volunteers. Currently, although we have a fantastic support team, we have just four active members to fight fires. We need more help from the community and would love to talk to any men and women who would like to help. As part of being a member of the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services family, you will be given access to a wide range of training to ensure you know how to operate in a safe manner. There is 4WD training, chainsaw training, First Aid training as well as ongoing training on how to fight a fire. The Belli Park RFS has a long history of not just helping the local community, but also
helping out across Queensland and the rest of Australia. The Fire Brigade has helped in Innisfail, Sydney, Kingaroy, Bundaberg, Yeppoon and The Gap, just to name a few. We are holding a breakfast BBQ on Sunday the 12 June from 7:30am till 10am at the station on the EumundiKenilworth Road. Please come along and meet the team, learn how to protect your own property and learn what it’s like to be a volunteer firefighter. It turns out that my property is not the only one that has recently been bombarded with the dreaded fowl mites! Many of my customers, with just a few chickens, have experienced the same itchy dilemma this past summer. If you walk into the coop or pick up a chook and come away feeling like little bugs are crawling on you, then you probably also have mites. There was an outbreak of mites across the Sunshine Coast this summer, and these little guys are spread by wild birds. There are different types of mites with the most common in our area being the Red Mite (comes out at night) and the Northern Fowl Mite (black/brown). The mites that move around in the daytime are the brown fowl mites, also known as Northern Fowl Mites. They are so irritating for chickens that it can send them off the lay and make them unwell. The mites are about the size of a pin prick, so very hard to see, but when full of blood they turn brown and can be seen with the naked eye. Once these brown creatures get onto you the chances are very high that your home, car and anywhere else you have ventured, will also become infested. You will then need to flea bomb or use a lot of fly spray to eradicate them. Plan of Attack

then also apply a powder for more immediate action on the mites. Do not let chooks back into coop. 2. Straight after treating the chooks, treat your house, car or anywhere you think you are getting bitten (usually red welts will come up and be itchy). Don’t go back inside for at least an hour. 3. On the same morning put on old clothes, cover yourself in insect repellent, and clean out the entire coop and nesting boxes. Bag up the contents and tie off each bag tightly. DO NOT put on your garden. 4. Hose out coop, preferably with a water blaster, and let it dry. 5. Immediately remove all clothing and place into a bucket with disinfectant and go straight to the shower without stopping anywhere on the way inside the house and wash hair. 6. When coop is reasonably dry use a specific spray or powder that will expel mites and put over all surfaces in the coop and nesting boxes. 7. After one hour relay the substrate (flooring material) and nesting box. Your chooks can now come back inside. 8. Here is the really important part and a bit annoying! Repeat this process exactly ten days later to stop the lifecycle of the mites. To prevent further outbreaks keep up a weekly maintenance plan. This may include using a mite powder on each chook weekly, and the coop, or a natural alternative. Citychicks.com.au

G R E AT N O O S A T R A I L WA L K The Great Noosa Trail Walk will be held on 1, 2, and 3 October this year and bookings are now open. There is a 150 walker limit for the three day Noosa Hinterland walk to maintain a friendly, communal atmosphere. The trail traverses the country towns of Cooroy, Kin Kin, Cooran and Pomona via a series of dedicated walking trails through farmlands, natural forests and spectacular lookouts of the hinterland through to the ocean. Trail guides will be on the route providing information

Spiders have many methods for capturing their prey of (mainly) insects and other arthropods. The most familiar one to us is to weave a large circular web which snares flying insects that blunder into the sticky silken threads. Other spiders capture their prey by running it down with blistering speed. Pouncing from ambush, spitting venom, diving in water and swinging sticky threads are some of the other techniques, depending on species. To us, the most amazing is the Net-casting Spider (Deinopis sp) which has taken the use of capture webs from a passive to an aggressive tactic. It does not sit in a web as, for example, the Golden Orb weavers do, waiting for prey, often for several days, open to attack by birds, wasps and other predators. Instead, it extrudes silk from its abdomen and shapes it into a small but neat and strong, rectangular cast-net. It then waits inside shelter, ready to cast. When a prey item comes within the target zone it throws the net, entangles the victim, immobilises it with venom, then proceeds to feed on the victim’s internal tissue. When expecting a target to approach a predetermined “kill zone”, military snipers are trained to” zero in” on that point in advance, improving the chances of a clean hit. Netcasting Spiders use the same tactic, selecting a small pebble or leaf as a range indicator. As soon as a target crosses or touches the indicator, (comes into the cross-hairs, so to speak) the net is cast with a high probability of success. Net-casting Spiders have a further weapon in their hunt for prey – brilliant night-vision.
They are nocturnal hunters thus it benefits them to concentrate prevailing light in the most efficient way. These spiders have simple, not complex eyes, with the two rear eyes extremely large, letting in what light is available. Their night vision is far superior to that of owls and cats, in fact it is probably the best of any creature. To enhance this even more, every night they manufacture a light-sensitive membrane within their eyes, which they destroy at dawn.

These hunters have a body length of about 18 mm (males) and 25 mm (females) with a distinctive hump. They have very long legs. We have had one on our arm, neck and inside our shirt with no attempt to bite observed. Our specimen appeared to be quite placid but we would never encourage anybody to handle any spider. All spiders are venomous to a greater or lesser degree depending upon species.
