They were open to our suggestions and the communication was always two-way. Both Kess and Anita responded promptly to our emails and telephone calls. On contentious issues they provided us with professional advice and in the circumstances the outcomes were acceptable to all participants. Just Love Eumundi!

And, in other good community news, Cr. Greg Rogerson has has earmarked $265,000 to our Caplick Park playground stage two! And, we’ll be seeing a new slippery slide plus BBQs.

What would you like to see in town as you experience Eumundi?

In n 1997 the first Sculpture by the Sea exhibition was held on the 2km Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk. 64 artists exhibited their work and an estimated 25,000 people visited. Now, some 20 years and millions of visitors later, public sculpture walks have become significant for an interactive relationship with the arts and artists and are a huge cultural tourism drawcard as well as a community benefit. Experience Eumundi has been a proud sponsor of the Eumundi Sculpture prize for the two winning works to date and would be keen to hear your views on whether there is value in extending this endeavour to a larger whole-of-town sculpture event featuring aturing a number of full size works with artists in residence, with maybe a two month duration for this activity.

Another important idea that would potentially enhance our town for residents and visitors alike would be to light up Memorial Drive. This may enliven the town at night in the style of Noosa’s Hastings Street and could add to the carnival atmosphere in summer & the cosy vibe in winter. Importantly it would positively impact our main street businesses and restaurants in the evening. What do you think? gm@eumundicco.com.au

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Cindy Suters, Vice President

J O E’ S WATER HO L E Sophie Eaton, Joe’s Waterhole Hotel manager What and where is your business? Joe’s Waterhole Hotel is a family orientated hotel offering: great a-la-carte and wholesome food with a gaming room, TAB, drive through bottle shop and, of course, cold beer. There is a lot of history and family tradition at Joe’s. This historic hotel as it stands today was once the Commercial, which was rebuilt in 1926 after a fire swept through Eumundi in 1924. In 1962 Joe Whiting took over ownership when he swapped his sugarcane farm in Maroochydore for the hotel. It became known colloquially as Joe’s Waterhole and was officially renamed in 1987. How long have you been working in Eumundi? I’ve been working at Joe’s for 34 years so I’ve grown up with the locals making me feel I’ve got an extended family. What is the best thing about working here? I love that small town closeness with only two actual owners of the hotel over the 34 years. I love that we get to do themed dress ups when we want - and everyone knows we love the themed party’s we have at Joe’s. Us girls don’t need much of an excuse. What is the worst thing you’ve found about working here? The only bad thing about working here is losing precious locals along the way. What would you like to see change in our business district? Not happy about some of our major businesses closing in Eumundi: butchers, newsagency and the community bus. Let’s hope we don’t lose any more.

The Eumundi Chamber of Commerce (ECC) exists to further the interests of businesses in our region. We do this by advocating on behalf of the business community, and hosting activities that help business owners “connect, network and grow.” A strong Chamber will help underpin the Eumundi business offer – especially when it comes to the five days each week that the markets don’t operate. Some fantastic up-coming events include the Taste of Tapas networking night at Unrefined on Thursday 30 June at Memorial Dr, Eumundi, 5.307.30pm. eumundichamber.biz/events1/ june-networking-evening. With the commencement of a new management committee we are also keen to identify what members see as priorities for the ECC over the coming year. Members are invited to answer questions to assist in formulating an action plan that

are representative of member’s needs and priorities. a) What would you like ECC to focus on that will represent the interests of businesses in Eumundi and surrounds? b) From suggestions above, which do you see as a first, second and third priority for the business community in Eumundi? c) What changes would you like to see to current activities and initiatives, ie ECC’s Website, the “7 Days in Eumundi” Brochure and Website, online member listings, access to brochure stands around town, monthly networking breakfasts, and affiliate partnerships with key organisations? Responses are welcome ‘anonymous in confidence’ to info@eumundichamber.biz or dropped off to Carol Dolan (Treasurer) at Noosa Hinterland Realty, 84 Memorial Dr.

Community DIVISION 9 & 10 BUDGET ANNOUNCED

CR GREG ROGE RSON Division 10

I’m very pleased to announce that some terrific upgrades are on the cards for the Eumundi Skatepark as part of council’s 2016/17 budget. A new shade sail will be installed at the Memorial Drive facility to provide important protection from the elements, especially the sun. A pathway will also be constructed around the perimeter of the skate park that will create a link to the nearby car park. A water bubbler and additional seating will also be included in the $100,000 project. NINDERRY TRAIL As part of our commitment to provide active, healthy and safe recreation options and facilities, council will commence the second stage of a renewal of the Mount Ninderry walking trail. This

$72,000 project will involve a renewal of the old trail and installation of new directional signage. There will also be some important realignments of the trail to help address erosion issues and ensure safe travels on the track all the way to the top of Mount Ninderry. SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT You may have read a recent article that appeared in another local publication regarding one individual’s opinion about a supposed lack of council support and investment in Eumundi. I’m very keen to respond to what was written in this story however I believe it deserves a thorough and detailed reply and I am keen to put some time and thought into it. So watch this space!

C WA I N T E R N AT I O N A L D AY Eumundi State School’s guitar club and choir recently performed for the women of the Eumundi QCWA branch for their CWA International Day. This year’s chosen country was Greenland. Eumundi’s CWA president Babara Robinson explained the country of study is part of the club’s international work. Babara explained, “Eumundi branch is connected to the world body - the Associated Country Women of the World whose head office is in London and each branch nominates a country they wish to study for the year.

added, “We are lucky as the principle Mic Connors and the teachers like to encourage the students to learn about other countries.”

Sunshine Coast Council announced their 2016/17 budget spending last Thursday. Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson said the budget included projects that would shape a positive future. “Major improvements to the Eumundi Markets Terraces site, with a $650,000 part-funding contribution from council, will support some of our most popular local events and help us attract even more visitors to this outstanding tourist attraction,” Cr Rogerson said. Division 9 Councillor Steve Robinson added that this year’s Council budget focused on building Australia’s ‘Smart Region’, providing significant upgrades to core community facilities while focusing on preserving our environment. “$2.5 million [is] being spent sealing Doonan Bridge Rd, Verrierdale, [and] Council has allocated funding to improve a section of Valdora Rd, Valdora at a cost of $300,000,” Cr Robinson stated. Division 10 budget highlights: • $800,000 for landscape works at Farrell St, Yandina • $650,000 for safety works at the Eumundi Market Terraces (pictured right) • $522,000 to renew the Wegner Rd bridge, North Arm • $200,000 to construct the toilet block at Issac Moore Park, Kenilworth • $100,000 to renew the Eumundi Skate Park • $72,000 to implement stage 2 of Mount Ninderry walk trail. • $265,000 for Stage 2 of Caplick Park Playground

The country of study for next year is Nepal. “The members enjoy seeing what the students present each year,” Babara shared.

Division 9 budget highlights: • $2.5 million to seal Doonan Bridge Rd, Verrierdale • $300,000 to improve a section of Valdrora Rd, Valdora • $212,000 for improvements to the stormwater network

Sweet jobs for the picking You may have heard that Sunshine Coast Council and Moreton Bay Council have partnered with a number of organisations to promote jobs for locals this strawberry season. In what is traditionally a backpackers’ market, there is no reason why locals cannot grasp this opportunity and gain experience over the strawberry season. Jobs such as packing and quality control will all be in high demand. While it is hard work, the paying conditions are quite reasonable and the work will certainly look good on any resume. The Sweetest Job campaign is supported by Regional Development Australia, Growcom, the Queensland Strawberry Growers Association and the Food and Agribusiness Network. North Arm-Yandina Creek Road sealing I am pleased to see the newly sealed North Arm-Yandina Creek Road open. It’s the latest rural road to be sealed

as part of council’s regionwide resealing program. I would like to thank the local residents for their patience and understanding while this road was closed for construction. Around 2km of the road was bitumen sealed, from North Arm to the top of Valdora Road. The road now provides local residents and school traffic with a safer and more convenient access to the area. Mt Ninderry walking trail I was pleased to inspect the new walking trail at Mt Ninderry recently. This is a complete upgrade of the existing walking trail, to give it more interesting trail features and make the experience of walking to the top of Mt Ninderry more accessible and breathtaking. The new trail has an easier gradient, making it more suitable for everyone to climb and providing better vantage points. Council is hoping to complete this new trail and open it for locals and visitors around August.

Markets

M a rket Spot lig ht ASIAN STREET FOOD Anna Petrides, Maggie Robertson, Bryson Rosbergen, Year 3, EES Ignite English.

Mmmmmmm!! What’s that delicious smell? It’s Malia and Channer sizzling up a storm. Spring rolls, stir fry’s and scrumptious curries are only a few of the Asian delicacies they have on offer at the Asian Street Food Stall at the world famous Eumundi Markets! Two years ago Channer and Malia grabbed the opportunity to take over the Asian food stall which had been successfully operating for the past seven years. Their love of the people and the atmosphere at the Markets enticed them to become stall owners. In order to create these tasty treats, Channer and Malia busily prepare the day before by preparing the fresh ingredients and cooking their famous sauces and curries. Times Wednesday 27 July 6.30 pm Thursday 28 July, Friday 29 July and Saturday 30 July 7.00pm Venue HPE Centre, Good Shepherd Lutheran College Tickets $18 Adults $ 13 Students/Concessions/Seniors Online Ticket Bookings Only via Flexischools.com.au

The next morning hungry customers are lining up outside their stall. They get all sorts of customers from young to old; even a dog comes by for a sniff. This stall is unique because they serve three different types of amazing Asian foods including Vietnamese, Sri Lankan and Thai. Channer himself is Sri Lankan which makes the food even more genuine. When we were interviewing Malia and Channer it was hard to concentrate with all the delicious smells wafting past our noses. Our stomachs were grumbling with hunger. These two owners put their heart and soul into their business and you can tell the passion they have towards their taste bud tantalising dishes.

Music W E A R E O N E W O R L D , O N E V O I C E , O N E H E A R T B E AT I N G Have you heard about Eumundi’s new World Music Community Choir? Held each Wednesday 6.30pm at the Imperial Hotel, it is a fantastic opportunity to join in a community activity that is fun and beneficial to your wellbeing. I chatted recently with facilitator Jo Deguara about all things choral.

For those not familiar with a choir what is involved? The choir is about fun and connection, not perfection, in a supportive and nonjudgemental space. Shower singers welcome, along with anyone who would like to be part of a group of people willing to have a go and exercise their creative flair singing many genres from African, Gospel, Yiddish, Folk, Russian, English and the occasional Pop. This will be a non-auditioned acapella

choir open to all ages and levels of musicality. What is your choir background? For a while now I have felt it would be great for Eumundi to have its own community choir. I am a local and have been for 12 years, and sing and conduct all over the coast but never here in town. I thought it was high time! I began singing 12 years ago when a girlfriend dragged me along to a choir. I had no idea of what to expect from a world music choir but was hooked pretty much from the first day on. I loved the African songs, harmonies, language and rhythm and was surprised at how easy it was to sing in Zulu, Swahili or any number of foreign languages. It wasn’t long before I realised how fabulous I felt from singing - physically, mentally and emotionally and it became obvious to me something special happens on many levels to a human when they sing, particularly together as a group. So, after a couple of years I decided to learn how to facilitate a choir and have been doing so ever since.

What goes on in a typical choir gathering? A choir session goes for two hours. We begin with rapport building exercises to integrate and meld the group, followed by gentle physical and vocal exercises and a simple song. Left/ right brain balancing exercises are incorporated as singing is a whole body activity. I encourage new people to listen to and try out the different sections as I teach them (bass, tenor, alto, soprano) within the choir to find where they feel they fit in with most ease vocally. You can join anytime however a weekly commitment will definitely enhance your personal experience and overall sound of the group. Why would you encourage people to join the choir? Choirs are for many things. This one is about building community, friendships, sharing heart and song. Already we have a lovely rapport among the group. None of us have ever met before and we are all locals! Singing as a group is said to be extremely beneficial to health with heartbeats and breathing

Kim Johnston

rates synchronising when a group of people sing together - something magical indeed! Learning harmonies, different languages and singing uses different parts of the brain. People find jobs, babysitters, handymen, dog sitters, love, friends, their sanity and themselves at choir. Most of all they find their voice and how to be meaningfully intimate with other humans in a platonic sense. Serious life skills! For those who may be hesitant about their voices and coming to choir, what would you say? Ah well, you don’t have to be able to sing to join! Sadly, the most common thing I hear from people is “I can’t sing”. People are so frightened of sounding bad or believe they do sound bad, they never ever give themselves a chance at finding out or changing that or of experiencing the unique joy of singing. The joy you feel from singing at choir that you take home has a ripple effect into the world, to your family and so on ... help spread the joy! 0403 841 856

Books FOR LOVE OF BIRDS

Judith Pattison in conversation with Henry Nix

The Foundation for Culture and the Arts (Eumundi) is set to launch its Sunshine Hinterland Writers and Readers Fund with a glorious treat for bird enthusiasts. An Evening with Australian Birds will include renowned biologist and author, Tim Low, in conversation with Professor Emeritus (ANU) and scientist, Henry Nix, as well as a slide show: Personalities of Australian Birds, by award-winning photographer (Glimpses of Australian birdlife) Raoul Slater. I spoke to Henry Nix about the upcoming event and his lifelong interest in Australian birds. Henry, and his wife Katharine, retired after forty years in Canberra, to their home state of Queensland in 2010. After a long and illustrious career in environmental science, including an Order of Australia for his contributions to environmental science, Henry has turned some of his vast knowledge and interest to his own back yard, six acres at Ninderry as he had also done in Canberra. What is the standard record for Birdlife Australia? The standard record for Birdlife Australia involves a 20 minute count of a two hectare site. I’ve used this method for decades. I do a daily count from my front deck that averages twenty-five to thirty species - but on one day exceeded forty species. This is the highest such count I’ve recorded anywhere in the world, which is why I call our six acre block ‘Birds Central’. There is a central core of resident breeding species as well as autumn and spring migrants with some overwintering and some remaining to breed over summer.” What are the main species visiting Ninderry Palms? My survey points overlook three primary habitats: eucalyptus open forest to the SE; grassland (horse paddock) to the south and closed forest/rainforest to Duncan’s pick: I’m currently trying to read the literary Everest that is James Joyce’s Ulysses. I found my copy in our second-hand section. But of course, one book is never enough - Joyce references Homer’s Odyssey and Shakespeare’s Hamlet amongst other things, and guess what? I found those in our second-hand section also. In a vulnerable moment I later found Joyce’s Dublin - an Illustrated commentary, by Rosanna Negrotti. Crikey - three books to read! So my staff pick for Berkelouw Books is our entire

the north; hence the healthy bird list. The main species are larger Honeyeaters: bluefaced, noisy miner, noisy friarbird and Lewins; and predatory species: Laughing kookaburra, pied and grey butcher birds, pied currawong and torresian crows. No doubt this is part of the explanation for the noticeable drop in the smallest bird species: finches, thornbills, scrubwrens. Mature palms and fig trees support figbirds and orioles as well as fruit eating pigeons. The only resident exotic species is the spotted turtle dove. Over the years what increase or decline of any particular birds? In the six years we have been here, I’ve recorded a significant decrease in migratory speciesall the Cuckoos: brush, fantailed, horsfield bronze, shining bronze, little bronze and lesser declines in koels and channel

bills, the rollers (dollar birds) and bee-eaters. This may be more to do with the over-wintering habitats in North Queensland and New Guinea than local factors. Most importantly, the smallest bush species: thornbills, gerygones, red-browed and double-barred finches, scrub wrens and fairy wrens, are still present but much reduced. Favourite bird to watch? My favourite bird to watch is the striated pardalote, commonly known as a chip chip, that burrows into earth banks to nest. This is one small bird that seems to be doing well everywhere. We have constructed two very large hanging baskets, filled with coconut peat (fine grade) and planted with ground cover species. Within hours of installation, pardalotes were drilling away into the basket and they are in continuous use. When did this passion for Australian birds begin? I’ve had a wide interest in the natural world since early childhood, but birds have always been at the forefront. I wanted to be a naturalist but no such training existed at

that time. The closest I could get to the broadest possible grounding in geology, soils, botany and zoology was the Diploma in Agriculture at Gatton College and then the Degree in Agricultural Science at University of QLD. I was also a foundation member of the Canberra Ornithologists Group in the mid 60’s, later a committee member and President in the 70’s and my garden bird record charts became the primer for the Canberra Garden Bird Charts, that now provide invaluable information on the distribution and abundance of birdlife in Canberra and the ACT. I asked him about Low’s book, Where Song Began: Australia’s birds and how they changed the world. Australian Birds are unique, despite carryover of common names brought from Europe such as magpie, robin, chough, flycatcher, lark, finch and so on. Just how unique is now apparent, thanks to truly ground breaking research in genetics and evolutionary analysis. It is a great story and Tim Low brings it to life. It’s a book I wish I had written.

You never know what hidden gems you might find, and it won’t break the bank. Claudia’s pick: Britt-Marie was Here by Fredrik Backman is the author of the much loved A Man Called Ove. Zany and full-of-heart, Britt-Marie Was Here is a novel about love and second chances, and about the unexpected friendships we make that teach us who we really are and the things we are capable of doing. Kylie’s pick: I have waited four years for 11

The City of Mirrors - this final instalment in the trilogy by Justin Cronin which began with The Passage and continued with The Twelve. A dystopian thriller of epic proportions following the lives of vastly different characters and their quest for survival against the terrifying blood sucking Dracs. Not your typical vampire slaying story though, there is realism, depth and humanity to the story. It didn’t take long to get reacquainted with everyone

and the storyline and I am not wasting another minute to find out how this saga plays out. Steven’s pick: If you’ve ever wanted to read a book about the workings of the human brain written by a neuroscientist who also dabbles in stand-up comedy, The Idiot Brain by Dean Burnett is the one to try. berkelouw.com.au/stores/ eumundi

Kids IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT ME - I T I S A B O U T U S Siona Howard From the minute my husband and I decided that we wanted to conceive a baby, life took me on a mysterious ride of emotions. My young and naïve mind believed that it would be easy to fall pregnant, raise children and maintain a fabulous level of health, sanity, organisation and competency in all areas of my life! I figured that people had been doing this for centuries. How hard could it be right? Ha! What book was I reading? Fifteen years later, I find myself still married and a mother of two incredible daughters. As I look back at my younger self, I realise just how much I have changed. This journey of family life thus far, has actually had a profound effect on me. Amidst the days of depletion and confusion, I realise the wonderful values I am gaining from my role. This moment of clarity teaches me the importance of growth in life. I surrender to that fact that

I am constantly learning. That is what I am here. I can feel just how much I have softened internally. This softening could now be my greatest strength. Perhaps I still am fabulously healthy, sane, organised and competent… just in a different way. Reflecting on my role as a Mother invites me to look at the different personalities, expectations and perceptions of my family and I suddenly remember that it’s not just about me. It is about “us”. Although we are all uniquely individual, our family is its own entity and is equally as important as each member. Just like a cake, the flour is not the same as the eggs, however when blended together with all the ingredients, they help to create something really special. In saying that, the cake will not bake itself. We have to mix it, work with it and create it! Happy baking! inspirationalsanctuary.com.au

Health COUGHS IN CHILDREN As anyone with children can ascertain, as soon as the cooler months are upon us the sniffling season begins. Childhood coughs are a common symptom, and whilst most should not raise undue concern, they can be disruptive and distressing for both the child and their family. It is common for parents to request the assistance of the pharmacist to recommend a suitable cough mixture to soothe the cough. In 2009 the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia conducted a comprehensive review of the medical literature relating to the safety and efficacy of cough and cold medicines under the age of 12 years. The review included a variety of medicines including cough suppressants, expectorants, mucolytics and antihistamines. It concluded that there were potential risks associated with these products for children especially in those under six years and only limited evidence for efficacy. On this basis the TGA advised consumers that:

Tania Watson, Pharmacist

- Children under six should not be given medicine to treat cough and cold symptoms. - Children six-11 should only be given medicine to treat cough and cold symptoms on the advice of a pharmacist, doctor or nurse. As a result of this advice many parents have turned to remedies that are considered to be more “natural” and to which the TGA recommendations do not apply. Herbal medicines have been used to treat coughs since ancient times, however many have not been tested in children. Ivy leaf extract (Hendra helix) however has had some positive trial results and is used in chesty or productive coughs. It has been shown to be an effective and well tolerated treatment for children. The compounds in ivy leaf open the airways, thin mucous and ultimately relieve the cough.

create a physical barrier, or other substances that may promote mucous secretion, reduce irritability and relieve coughing.

BUS STOPS FOR FREE HEARING TESTS

Other non-medicinal strategies can also be of assistance such as rest and hydration, humidifying the air, and steam inhalations with or without essential oils such as eucalyptus. If the child is under two years of age, and the cough is accompanied by a high fever or the child appears to be experiencing difficulty breathing then medical advice should be sought. Parents should be alert to changes in colour, especially blueish hues, along with any unusual breathing noises such as “whooping” noises.

For dry coughs: herbs such as marshmallow root, liquorice root, Iceland moss and lime flowers contain mucilage which

Key lime syrup cake

Valda Andrews

This is quite a large fine textured cake, rather like a pound cake or a sand cake. It is encrusted with roasted pecan nuts and roasted macadamia nuts on top. The lime syrup is poured over when it comes out of the oven and decorated with lime slices that have been boiled in the syrup. I find that these slices are a bit bitter after freezing so generally discard them before I freeze left over cake. Key limes have quite a strong flavour but I use the common lime that is readily available around the Sunshine Coast. This cake freezes well in slices and warms well in the microwave. When I made this one for a luncheon I served it with fresh cream and a bowl of fresh passionfruit pulp. Ingredients

• 1 cup milk

Method

• 100 g pecan nuts, roasted and ground

• 2 tblsp chopped macadamia nuts roasted

Preheat oven to 180°C.

• 250 g butter

• 2 tblsp sugar

• 2 cups caster sugar

Syrup glaze

• Zest of 4 limes

• Juice of 4 limes (1/2 cup)

• 5 large eggs

• 3/4 cup sugar

• 3 cups SR flour

• 2 whole limes

• 100 g ground almonds

• 2 tblsp shredded coconut

Butter a fluted ring tin (approx. 24cm) quite generously. Sprinkle with pecan nuts. Cream butter and sugar with lime zest. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add sifted flour lightly, ground almonds, and milk alternately. Mix gently.

Place in prepared tin and sprinkle macadamia nuts and sugar on top. Bake for 70 mins. To make glaze, whisk lime juice and sugar together and bring to the boil making sure that the sugar is dissolved. Slice limes very thinly and allow to simmer gently. Unmould cake, pour over syrup and decorate with the lime slices. Sprinkle with coconut and dust with icing sugar. Enjoy.

Outdoors EUMUNDI FIRE REPORT The Eumundi Fire Brigade has been busy lately. We have attended a number of incidents ranging from a large protracted wildfire event in Reesville near Maleny, a number of small, local grass and scrub fires, hazard reduction burns for local landowners and National Parks, and to top it off assisted the Cooroy Auxilliary Brigade with the rescue of a horse that got stuck in a dam. We attended a scrub fire last week, even after all the recent rainfall – a reminder that the country can be deceptively dry at this time of year. Back at the depot, our brigade has been busy with training. The wellbeing of our firefighters is of

primary concern, so a number of brigade members have received a high level of First Aid training to align with the unique risks that occur when fighting bushfires. Importantly, these are good life skills for our members to have.

is a cock-a-doodle-doo for you?

When not chasing bushfires we also have an artistic side. Our brigade was called upon to keep the grass green for the recent unveiling of the sculpture prize, watering the newly laid turf with our fire truck. We also provided the venue for a fantastic stencil art workshop organised by the Generator Art Gallery. With a bit of creativity, our brigade shed being right in the middle of town - could be a fantastic community resource. Get in touch if you have ideas on how to put it to good use. Meanwhile, new members are always welcome. We meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of every month at 7pm. Pop in and say g’day.

have their spurs (long spikey nail at the back of the foot) trimmed. Even a tame and friendly rooster may attack if he feels you are threatening his flock. Benefit 3: Chicks! When you hear a “cock-adoodle-doo” at 3am in the morning you most likely will think that you would like to do something nasty to the culprit. At times we have a few roosters onsite and they definitely can start up well before sunrise. However, I am quite fond of the farm noises and attuned to them so it doesn’t wake me. Luckily my neighbours are too! There are benefits to owning a rooster, but before you even contemplate it you need to check with your local Council to ensure you are allowed to have one on your property. Benefit 1: Hot! Roosters are the most stunning looking chickens. Their amazing plumage usually consists of long feathers, really bright colours and large red combs and wattles. Benefit 2: Protection!

Roosters will be very alert and they will constantly check the surrounds for any signs of danger or particularly yummy treats for the hens. If you fancy breeding some offspring then you will need a rooster to fertilise the eggs. A broody hen will sit on the eggs for 21 days or more until they hatch. She will then raise them herself over the watchful eye of the rooster. Benefit 4: No More Tantrums! The pecking order amongst the hens can get quite nasty if some aren’t obeying the head chook. A rooster can sort out the pecking order and make a peaceful home in a matter of days. Looking at these benefits it may seem all thumbs up to roosters if you can have them legally. If you are planning on buying one then I would recommend getting one that is mature so that you know what his personality is like from day one. If you get them young some can be really nasty and will constantly attack you when you enter the coop. Each breed has certain general characteristics but you can never be sure how they will turn out once they get their girls under their wing. P.S. A small rooster does not mean a small, quiet crow! N atu re N otes SUNSHINE COAST EMUS Whenever I think of emus, I have an image of them wandering the inland areas of our vast country. Driving along Emu Creek Rd and passing Emu Mountain, I started to wonder whether it was possible that there had once been emus in that location. Now that I am slightly in the loop, I can definitely say that YES … there really were emus on the Sunshine Coast and for that matter within the last few decades. My neighbours remember emus in paddocks along the road from Yandina to Coolum. It would seem small flocks roamed these forests and wallum areas (coastal heaths) till quite recently. Sadly, all our local Coastal emus are gone - however I understand a small population still exists on Bribie Island. The thing that is of interest to me though are the plants that co-existed with emus and used them as vectors for seed and fruit dispersal. Plants and animals always co-evolve, so the lack of emus could ultimately contribute to the loss of bio diversity in our remaining areas of wallum. Many fruits can only germinate once they have been through the

Natu re No tes Ph oto Helen Hepburn

intestines of certain animals or birds. The gut bacteria dissolve the flesh off the fruits and the seeds are thus eliminated all ready and prepped. Yes, those poo bombs really are useful! Another little known fact is that there were once emus on Kangaroo Island, King Island and Tasmania and even possibly Flinders Island. All disappeared (exterminated) shortly after settlement by the early sealers, settlers and the early farmers who killed them for food and also their eggs. Last but not least, the altered land uses and fire regimes saw them all gone by the mid1800s. The King Island emus were half the size of existing mainland ones. The Tasmanian emus were of similar size to mainland birds but are still regarded as a sub-species. Vale to these missing emus. Our islands, our Sunshine Coast are the poorer for their loss.

We have had some lovely visitors on the dam recently. I thought they were wanting a sea change and enjoying our beautiful countryside but someone then told me that their mother used to have pelicans on the dam in Winton when she was growing up. Jeanette Grevett, Eerwah Vale.

Change the Entitlements? I absolutely agree. If a pension isn’t an entitlement then neither is theirs. They [politicians] keep telling us that paying us an aged pension isn’t sustainable. And on the point of markets on three days a week, as an artist and former stall holder for seven years, I fail to see how it is possible to make all your own stuff and have a stall on three days of the week.
