Notes Editor’s note ...
A HINTERLAND MOMENT
You’re right. In the scheme of things it’s not that cold – But! – for a tropical hinterland, ocean loving, outdoorsy people, who are used to blistering sun, long days and salty swims - it’s cold! Isn’t it wonderful? Hearty meals, warm brews, comforting doonas and snuggly clothes are so good for nurturing the soul. But if you can brave taking the ugg boots and cable knit jumper off, there’s an amazing assortment of creative endeavours waiting outside. Many of our nature loving contributors had a blast at the Garden Expo (p16 - 17). Also this issue it’s the Arts that have spilled out onto extra pages (p9 - 12). We’re in the middle of the Noosa Long Weekend, which (so far) has been a fab fest of performance to get immersed in. And (I tell myself) going out does make coming home to those uggs, cuppa and fireplace all the more tantilising… it’ll be hot and sunny again before we know it.

Passed away peacefully aged 87. John was born a Kentish man but emigrated to Australia aged 20 and worked in many guises all over the country before settling in Eumundi. He is best known locally as the principal of the former Eumundi Properties. John bought and sold most of the properties in and around Eumundi; some many times over. He was a loveable rogue, known for his cheeky laugh and sayings. ‘Bumping’ was his term for connecting with people. He always had time for a chat and farewelled all with a smile and “See you when the whips are crackin” or “Mind the Motors”.

What and where is your business? What do you offer? French & Vintage is a pop-up shop in Emerald St, Cooroy, until the first week in August. We offer lovely French and English antiques and vintage wares - although if something from any country is old, beautiful and affordable we’ll snap it up. How long have you been in business? We’ve been in the antiques industry for almost 30 years, selling in the UK, Canberra, Sydney and on the Coast. We had a retail shop called Continuum in Eumundi for five years, but we sold that business, rebranded as French & Vintage, and started again. So far, so good! What is the best thing about your business? The best thing is that we travel to Europe once or twice a year, shopping for lovely things, sightseeing and having a great time. The unexpected best thing is the number of our regular customers who have become personal friends. What is the worst thing you’ve found about working here? The paperwork... hate the paperwork. Also, the distinct lack of sympathy from friends and
customers when we tell them we’re going shopping in Paris again. Hey, it’s work! What would you like to see change in the business district? Years ago we heard of a suggestion to beautify the Eumundi markets precinct by building permanent stands –much like the open-sided buildings you see in historic market towns in Europe. But these ones were to have plants across their roofs so they’d be naturally insulated from the heat and cold - and beautiful to boot. Whatever became of that suggestion? The Markets precinct is pretty dull on non-market days, and a few permanent fixtures like this would look lovely for us all every day. frenchandvintage.biz

Throughout the six month lead up time in the preparation of Council’s 2016/17, Stage 2 of the upgrade to Dick Caplick Park was firmly entrenched in the officers submissions. Apparently though in finalising the budget, Council’s Parks and Gardens Department modified their submission to reallocate the Dick Caplick Park Stage 2 upgrade funding into the 2017/2018 year. Unfortunately this seemingly prudent decision wasn’t conveyed to me as Divisional Councillor and so I apologise to you for letting this oversight slip through the cracks. To rectify this, I will be putting forward Divisional funding to replace the electric BBQ areas that were removed as part of Stage 1 works. I will also be funding the replacement of a ‘youbeaut’ slippery slide in the very popular children’s playground. I’ve made this a matter of priority so I look forward to having these works carried out in the very near future. There have been some questions raised in the community about the Eumundi Skate Park and why it received funding in this year’s budget for various upgrades. Under Council’s capital works program, proposed projects are assessed against a number of criteria relating to things like social and economic benefits, demand, environmental impacts and risk. The skate park scored highly against these criteria and
was therefore allocated funding. To summarise, the proposed upgrades were deemed to provide important benefits like attracting more people to town to use them and giving local youngsters recreational opportunities. There were other important considerations that necessitated these works like ensuring the skate park was compliant with safety standards – which I’m sure everybody will agree is vital for a skate park facility. A couple of years ago the bus shelter on Caplick Way was removed due to lack of use and poor condition. The shelter had a termite infestation and was very much worse for wear. It has recently come to my attention that Council and the State Govt’s Main Roads Dept now wish to remove the only other bus shelter in town on Napier Rd, due to lack of use and poor state of repair. After discussions with Eumundi State School Principal, Michael Connors, the shelter will be retained for students who catch the bus, or wait for their parents. I have also reached out to Michael Carney – Chairperson for the Foundation Arts & Culture Eumundi – to discuss their possible involvement in the design of an artistic new shelter for Napier Rd and the possible inclusion of a similar designed shelter for Caplick Way. I’m very open to your suggestions and comments on this.

Arts H E A LT H Y C R O C H E T H A B I T Now we’re deep in the throes of winter and with the promise of another cold snap on the way, crafty hinterlanders start hankering to dig out their knitting needles or crochet hooks and snuggle up on the lounge by the fire – no one more so than Jen Gralike (aka Jammade). The Eerwah Vale local and mumma of three is crochet crazy and completely mad about making pretty things especially 50’s, 60’s and 70’s fashion and home décor. Jen’s mum taught her to knit when she was just eight and she then taught herself to crochet 12 years ago. “I love turning a ball of yarn into something amazing, a work of art,” Jen shared. Since then her prolific crochet habit has had her stitching pretty much everything you can imagine. “I love to design and write new patterns, to bring new ideas to life - and resurrect old patterns - sometimes giving them a modern twist.”
and that’s my most popular pattern online. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever crocheted? Trust me, you don’t want to know - but the second craziest thing I’ve crocheted is a spare tyre cover for my husband Pete’s 4WD. Luckily he didn’t complain. What have you crocheted that you are most proud of? Everything I made for my wedding - decorations and even my wedding dress. The dress took me six weeks but it was worth the effort! jammade.com
She sells her original patterns and occasionally her handmade treasures on her website. So, cup of tea in hand, and over the clacking of knitting needles, the Green asked Jen to share a little more insight into her passion for stitching. Photo: Leo Wiles
Who taught you to crochet? I tried to find a teacher but that didn’t work for me so I bought a book and taught myself. I admit there was some swearing involved but it wasn’t long until I was addicted. What’s your favourite thing to crochet? Doilies! Yes, they’re old fashioned but I love making them and turn them into rugs and other interesting things. How do you come up with your patterns? Necessity is the mother of all invention they say, and it is usually the case with my patterns. If I can’t find a pattern I want, I’ll make one up. I do get requests for different things and sometimes that inspires me to create. That’s how the stripy elephant came into existence

Songstress Melissa Isles is renowned in Eumundi for performing at local community events – either solo or with her harmonising trio the Doo Wop Dolls. Melissa has been on the Sunshine Coast for 24 years and her husband Carl’s family has been here in Eumundi for 40 years. “When I first saw Eumundi I thought it was a gorgeous town. “My mother-in-law had a stall at the markets selling her hand made raffia hats and home grown strawberries and honey. I then had a job at one of the stalls selling t-shirts,” Melissa said. “The town really grew on me and I decided I wanted to also bring my children up here.”

Foundation Chair, Michael Carney explained, “having experts in the world of birds as eminent as these three and Henry Nix, being a local, seemed the perfect combination for a celebratory event like this.
former Sunshine Hinterland Writers Centre (SHWC) called for a subject that would have wide appeal to the residents of the Sunshine Hinterland. “Whether they are serious birdwatchers or merely back yard enthusiasts, people in the Sunshine Hinterland are enamoured of their birds. It’s almost a condition of residence,” he said. The establishment of the Foundation’s Sunshine Hinterland Writers and Readers Fund (SHWR) was the result of a timely collaboration between the Foundation and the SHWC. The Centre was best known

for the Reality Bites non-fiction Literary Festival, as well as a continuing program of popular events and workshops. When the SHWC officially wound up in early 2016, it transferred its assets, under its rules of association, to the Foundation for Culture and Art (Eumundi) as an organisation with similar objectives. Michael noted, “A new Sunshine Hinterland Writers and Readers Fund has now been set up with the money transferred to the Foundation from the SHWC. The objectives of the SHWR Fund are: “to promote Australian literature, enhance the skills of and provide resources, information and literary activities for writers and readers in the Sunshine Hinterland area”. As well, the Board of the Foundation welcomes the appointment of Judi Pattison, a former member of the SHWC as a Director. Judi will be looking after literary activities for us”, he said.

The Lieutenant by Kate Grenville is the beautifully woven tale of Daniel Rooke, a young English Lieutenant who makes the journey as astronomer and science man of The First Fleet in 1787. Rooke, who prefers to isolate himself from the rest of the Red Coats and their convict charges, sets up an observatory overlooking the harbour. Inevitably it is he who is befriended by some of the local Aboriginal people. He considers it his role to document and learn as much of the local language as he can and a friendship forms between himself and a young girl, Tagaran. As the story plays out he must choose to follow 12

orders or be true to his own moral compass, recently awakened. The book was inspired by the 1790 notebooks of William Dawes, a true officer of the First Fleet, who recorded the Aboriginal language of Sydney through his conversations with a young Gadigal woman. The success of the story, of course, rests on the characters Grenville has brought to life. Rooke is a solitary child who stands out from his peers as a brilliant mathematician and travels from one side of the world to the other before he finds his place in it. The Lieutenant is not just a sympathetic tale of a man

searching for himself, nor is it a battle report of the British invasion of Australia. It is an insight into how things could have happened all those years ago. Coincidently, I read the book during NAIDOC Week and caught a conversation Richard Fidler had with Karen Menzies, a lecturer at Newcastle University. She spoke of the impact and insight William Dawes’ notebooks have given researchers into a language that is vastly complex and in danger of being lost in modern society. N.B. I have been cheating for some months now. When I say I’ve read a book I use the term loosely. Bolinda audio is my enabler and all I needed was my library card number to begin what has been an amazing reigniting of my affair with reading.

One of my favorite things in the world is matcha flavour - “maht-ch” means green tea in Japanese. In fact, anything matcha makes me happy. I first encountered matcha while growing up in Japan so the flavour brings back many memories of childhood. When I found this recipe recently I couldn’t resist making it. I added the sesame seeds and coconut cream, and switched agave for rice syrup and maple syrup… and then of course added some extra matcha! The fact that green tea is also a superfood is an added benefit. Recently at Sunspace I’ve been playing with superfoods in drinks as well - matcha latte, golden milk, pink macca, and golden smoothie. Matcha made in heaven! Ingredients

Sport EUMUNDI SUPER SQUAD School holidays for teenagers conjures up thoughts of sleepins and generally taking it easy. But not for the Eumundi Super Squad swimmers, who spent as many hours in the water as they did their beds last week. Coach Adrian Williams had organised a special training ‘Hell Week’ for his squad and they were joined by a squad from Cheltenham Swim Club in Melbourne. “Challenges and friendships are what swimming is all about and this week has exceeded expectations,” Adrian commented. The Victorians arrived on Sunday and were billeted out amongst the Eumundi Club families. By the end of day one they had all swum 12.1km and really bonded following some team building activities organised by Cheltenham coach Jerome Elliott - and the commonality of sharing the pain!
Alasdair Smith
Over the week, they completed nine gruelling sessions, including some gym work and a final Saturday morning session of 10km to clock up a total of 51km. Between swims, the group showed they could “play” just as hard as they worked in the pool: stand up paddle boarding on the Noosa River, walking through Noosa National Park and swimming at Kondalilla Falls, Laser Tag, exploring the Eumundi Markets and Hastings St formed part of their hectic schedule. The Cheltenham swimmers were an enormous credit to their club and are welcome back at Eumundi anytime.

Getting the squad swim fit was one of the objectives for the week, but one of the immeasurable benefits was the new friendships formed. Sore limbs and muscles will soon be forgotten, whilst the motivation to improve, the sense of

over the week, whether it be accommodating swimmers, running a taxi service, or cooking up breakfast at the pool. The final word has to be congratulations to an amazing group of young people, whose exemplary behaviour, dedication, teamwork and sense of fun was worth losing sleep for!

HOW OLD IS OLD? Susa Wynne-Hoelscher, Pilates Instructor Joseph Pilates nailed it when he said, “If, at the age of 30, you are stiff and out of shape, you are old. If, at 60, you are supple and strong, you are young.” Your age is just the number of times you’ve celebrated your birth … on the other hand, your body tells your real story. The hallmarks of your true age are your muscle tone and strength, flexibility, agility and balance. Fortunately, Pilates addresses these areas in a low impact way, and as it’s a functional exercise these benefits carry into your daily life so that “living” becomes easy. Pilates is the true anti-aging exercise, reversing the common signs of ageing. There’s no need to resign ourselves to joint aches and injuries, sore backs, stiff hips, headaches and neck pain. So is it time to start reversing this? Pilates is anti-aging because it’s
a resistance exercise – it builds bone density. It strengthens and tones muscles creating a strong, toned body. It lengthens tight muscles and improves flexibility so you can move freely and easily. You will discover your core – and this will assist EVERYTHING - but especially your agility and balance. It also addresses cardio health and fat burning by burning off excess adrenaline and cortisol, reducing stress, and releasing endorphins so you’ll feel fabulous, not just look fabulous. And you get to do most of it lying down! I often hear, “I’ve never been able to touch my toes” or “my balance has always been a real problem”. Well there’s no reason why you can’t be doing things you never even thought you could. It could just be the most fun you’ve had lying down with a bunch of strangers! So be fit - live happy!
Winter is a perfect time for Pilates... We do it inside - so your body W heat will be warming the room by the second exercise! It builds your immune system (fewer colds for you!) and eliminates joint and muscle aches and pains. It releases endorphins... and, you even get to wrap your feet in cosy socks as you exercise. Most importantly, you’ll be fit and well to fight off the winter chills. PLUS don’t forget SUMMER bodies are made in WINTER!! Live Happy.

Outdoors QLD GARDEN EXPO - FUN FOR K I D S Amber Grimley I got to meet the wonderful crazy Costa the Garden Gnome (aka Costa Georgiadis from ABC’s Gardening Australia) at the Qld Garden Expo last weekend. This amazing man is passionate about all things gardening - especially compost. Kids joined in the fun at Costa’s Compost Academy learning all about what goes into our bins and what we can put into our compost. His catch cry of the day was, “Rot or not!” and the kids had fun yelling out whether garbage pieces would rot or not. Dirtgirl was also there to say hi.
digging for spuds, dressing scarecrows, potting up plants, hiding in the Night Garden, patting animals, gem fossicking, eating ice cream and even more! Of course there was also plenty of garden fun for the adults too. Make sure you go to the Expo next year, take the whole family and go for the whole three days.
EUMUNDI FIRE REPORT We have had a couple of house fires in town lately. It’s easy to blame winter: fires might be ignited by the usual suspects such as heaters and candles. However fires can start for all sorts of reasons - not always obvious, let alone predictable. Sometimes it doesn’t matter how vigilant you are. For this reason the best thing you can do to protect yourselves from house fires is to make sure the smoke alarms are working in your house. This won’t stop your home from burning down, but it will make sure that anyone that is inside a house that starts to burn is awake and has a chance of getting out. Remember, anything with a pulse cannot be replaced. So protect what is vital - the rest is just stuff.
There was no lack of fun for the kids with many activities like:
N AT I O N A L T R E E D AY Planet Ark is encouraging Australians to join the country’s biggest nature care initiative and tree planting event by embracing their inner green thumbs for Schools Tree Day on Friday 29 July or National Tree Day on Sunday 31 July. green-minded individuals to help protect Australia’s unique natural environment. Join a local site run in the community or even register to plant in your own backyard, courtyard or balcony garden. Last year nearly 300,000 people took part at over 3,500 sites across the country, planting more than 1.2 million native trees, shrubs and edibles and helping to green urban areas.
but this is a great test that the smoke sensor itself is working. Don’t remove the battery or beat it into submission with your broom. One day that annoying blast of sound might be the difference between standing on the footpath calling triple zero, or a final trip in a white van. Smoke alarms will give you a fighting chance, and could save your life and those of your housemates and beloved pets. Take the time to check - you want these things to work. Meanwhile, from these recent fires emerged wonderful community support. Neighbours helping out, food donations collected, help provided through volunteered labour and trailers to move salvaged possessions, and even donated accommodation. Election time provides fertile ground for petty arguments and cynicism, but my faith in grass-roots community action and support was restored this week. You know who you are ... thank you all!
Smoke alarms can be tested with the test button on the bottom - use a broom handle if you like. Depending on type, this will make sure it is wired up and/or the battery is working. If you can’t remember when you last replaced the alarm’s battery do it now. Meanwhile set a regular annual date (April Fools day, financial new year, birthday etc) and replace the battery on each anniversary, and give it a dust and clean while you’re at it. You might moan when toast burns in the kitchen Photo: Duncan Sayers and the alarm goes off,

N atu re N otes MUD PUDDLERS Kon Hepers Just outside our back door there is a shallow depression in our lawn. When it rains this becomes a puddle and after a number of birds have trampled around in it we have a mud puddle, an obvious food source to be exploited. First up is a pair of Peewees correctly named Magpielarks but not related to either magpies or larks. They paddle about for hours picking up small insects and worms. Now and then they fly up to a nearby branch to sing their delight in an antiphonal duet, each bird responding to the other while beating time with their wings and spreading their tails. Part of their call sounds just like “knee deep” and that reminds them it’s time to wade in the puddle again. It’s obvious why down south they are known as Mudlarks although we have also observed them in the most arid parts of this country. When they walk they jerk their heads backwards and forwards in rhythm, just like some of the little wooden toys that small kids have. In the bird world there is no such thing as having a resource to yourself. A pair of Pied Currawongs which spend most of the day loitering outside our
Currawong in puddle
Magpie lark
window looking for spiders swoops in and takes over. We see them standing still in the mud apparently listening for worm activity, every so often pulling a worm (sometimes quite large) from beneath the puddle and adjoining lawn. These birds are well equipped for this with strong beaks and infinite patience and don’t really like sharing the pool. Snapping at their heels but careful to skirt around the solid fringes of the mud puddle is Willie Wagtail. This little freeloader is harvesting the legion of insects stirred up by the others without getting his own feet wet and dirty. He is a solitary bird who turns up here every winter and often hitches a ride on our wheelbarrow. Willie wagtails do something a bit strange with their eyebrows. Usually they are stark white on a black face, the next instant they are not visible. It depends on
EUMUNDI COMMUNITY GARDEN U P D AT E Anja Morgan
the bird’s age, gender, status and particularly mood. Often a Pied Butcherbird sits on the back of a chair and watches proceedings but never takes part. Occasionally it picks up a grasshopper from further down the lawn. Suddenly all the birds take off in a flurry. Next-doors’ magpies have swooped in and claimed the puddle as part of their territory. There are always three of them, two parents and a grown chick which we watched being reared last summer. They don’t seem too interested in the mud puddle but don’t want the other birds there either. They are especially vindictive towards the Magpie-larks and use their superior speed to hunt and attack them in flight. Having upset the equilibrium they go back next door and within minutes the Peewees and Wagtail are back. The Currawongs make themselves scarce for a couple of hours. It is interesting that all five of these bird species are “pied”; it is an old English word for blackand-white. It seems to be a very
effective camouflage adaptation and we have observed that when perched in dappled shade the birds are nearly invisible, even when you hear them calling and note where they landed. The stark black-and-white is equally effective in open areas with strong sunlight where the outline of the birds is broken up by glare. That is probably why Willie Wagtails are found all over Australia, (except Tas) and we have found them foraging in every Australian desert where they somehow have access to water. Magpie-larks also thrive in the arid outback country while Magpies and Butcherbirds have a very wide distribution. Conversely, Pied Currawongs, being primarily forest birds range down the East Coast in a wide strip. Right up North they are jet black. Many more of our Australian bird species, ranging from penguins to cormorants to Jabirus, are black-and-white (pied). There is a large flock of water-loving Magpie Geese in the area and we hope they don’t discover our little mud puddle any time soon.
Plans are coming along for the design of the community gardens area and a big thank you to Mick and Janet Millington for helping measure up everything on site and coming up with our base plans for us to create some garden magic! What a great day out at the Queensland Garden Expo! Wow! We are busting at the seams to get busy building garden beds after finding even more enthusiasm and inspiration from the show. We tracked down Costa Georgiadis from Gardening Australia (ABC) who has made a firm commitment to open the garden when we’re ready! Exciting times ahead for the Eumundi community and we can’t wait to get through all this planning and designing and talking so we can get down and dirty to be continued! 17

INA DEQ UAT E PAR KIN G SIGN AGE Just a suggestion in regards to parking in Eumu ndi - the signage is inadequate. I parked outside Pearl s for Girls this morning. The only parking sign is right along towards the pub which I looked at as I vacated the car. A BIG 2HR sign stands out boldly, so I thought to myself, “Ok, I have two hours” and off I went. I made sure I was back at my car well within those two hours, only to find, low and behold a $60 parking ticket! I walked further along the road to check the sign and hidden at the top (not seen from along the road) is this! One sign with the top half hidden by building guttering and not seen 1/2 a dozen car spaces away and the bottom half in BOLD. There are posts all the way along there and yet only one half hidden sign. What point is there for half an hour parking on a market day and two hour for every other day when the place is empt y? It make s absolutely no sense. NOT a good way to encourage peop le to come to Eumundi, that’s for sure. Pamela McInnarney, Eumundi
