Notes Editor’s note ... It’s around this time of year that we pat ourselves on the back and think we’re pretty lucky to be living in such a beautiful place where we can spend the day at the beach and return to a lush hinterland home at night.

EUMUNDI VILLAGE PHARMACY

A HINTERLAND MOMENT

I’ve met a few people lately who say they live in the hinterland not for the summers but the springs and autumns. Now that our week of winter is over and we’re all back in our thongs, we’ve been getting back into the garden. My head is full of dreams about bumper vegetable crops – I’m determined to never buy another lettuce and grow enough tomatoes this year to make my own sauce - before the summer heat (or torrential rains) hits.

SACHA HAMILTON-MACL AREN editor@eumundigreen.com.au PO Box 482, Eumundi 4562 ECCO thanks the volunteers who contributed over 100 hours production, collation and delivery work for the last issue of The Green Proofreading: Bronwen Pearson, Hamish Cameron, Anthony WynneHoelscher & Sacha HamiltonMacLaren.

I pass this roadstall to come into Eumundi. I so miss the stalls that were scattered around years ago. Perhaps more people with excess produce could be encouraged to pop it outside on footpath with a donation tin? I love to find some homegrown produce locally - which means it is in season! Business F O O D I N N O VAT I O N A N D C O L L A B O R AT I O N Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher A very enthusiastic group of more than 60 growers, processors and other lovers of all things food and sustainability gathered at Eumundi’s Green Room on the 26 July for a halfday workshop on Innovation & Collaboration. Presented by FAN (Food and Agriculture Network), Acland Brierty from the Spirit House delivered an entertaining case study of his and his family’s ‘destination’ restaurant innovations. Helen Lewis from Picots Farm talked about holistic beef farming and the frustrations, but also the delights, in challenging the traditional supply chain model. Industrial designer Neil Davidson presented a thought provoking talk on problem solving through design-led thinking and finally, Kim McCosker, owner of 4-Ingredients series of cookbooks shared examples of how collaborating with locals can double the success factor.

like-minded folk with a mission for success – were facilitated by Jacqui Wilson-Smith, FAN Director and Head of Innovation at Gourmet Garden. It quickly became clear that to transform a good idea into an innovation, you need to work out from the get go who you need collaborate with both within and outside of your business. Collective collaboration can double or triple our capacity, to not only solve problems, but also pre-empt problems not yet dreamt of! As Raymond Belbin said, “Nobody’s perfect – but a team can be”.

CHAMBER NETWORKING NIGHT Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher More than 20 members of the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce gathered at the Imperial Hotel’s Green Room last Thursday evening for the first of a new series of Chamber After Five Business Networking Mixers. The Imperial’s chef Andrew Strange prepared a delicious selection of Asian inspired canapés, before regaling guests with amusing stories of his chef’s life journey (including a two year stint as personal chef to the Rolling Stones for their Voodoo Lounge world tour!). Vice President of Chamber, and MC Cindy Suters from Artisans Gallery introduced a new inclusion to Chamber’s networking program, a Member’s Spotlight featuring new members in attendance, where they were able to give other attendees a quick snippet of their business and opportunities for collaboration with other ECC members. As General Manager of Eumundi Combined Community Organisation (ECCO), I spoke

Workshops about interactive innovation and collaboration -

about the array of cultural activities that Eumundi has secured as part of September’s whole of coast Horizon Festival for Arts and Culture. ECCO Chair Louise Formosa outlined expectations for whole of town improvements and preferred Sunshine Coast Council budget priorities to ensure Eumundi’s community amenity is upgraded and beautified in line with its status as a tourism hub and “jewel” of the hinterland. Cindy went on to explain that Chamber has a number of initiatives underway to attract visitors and locals on nonmarket days including the new whole of town Eumundi Culture Fridays. Chamber is also investigating upgrading Memorial Dr around unique street lighting and animation to attract more diners into town after dark. Part of the night was dedicated to businessto-business networking and feedback to guide Chamber’s priorities.

Our office is based in Cooroy and we specialise in properties for sale and rent in and around Cooroy, Eumundi, Doonan and the Hinterland region and more recently have expanded our services to the coastal suburbs of Tewantin down to Peregian Beach. I’ve been with Hinternoosa as a Sales Consultant for six years and three years ago was fortunate enough to become a Partner in the business. Murray and Lyndal Brown opened Hinternoosa in 1989 and the business now consists of nine Sales Consultants, two Property Managers and four administrative support staff (the cement that keeps us all together).

Join a Wildower Festival walk

What is the best thing about working there?

In late winter and early spring the Coast’s wildowers burst into a stunning array of sizes, shapes and colours. Explore these natural beauties as part of the Sunshine Coast Wildower Festival from August 21 – September 3. Visit Council's website for the Festival program, including guided walks between Bribie Island and Noosa.

That no two days are ever the same. I love the interactions I have with the ever changing clients. It’s such a pleasure to be able to assist people to move on to the next chapter of their lives. At times the circumstances can be sad or difficult but the outcome is usually positive and it gives me a great sense of satisfaction to be part of that process. It’s also a privilege to be invited into such stunning homes and acreage properties. I am constantly in awe of the way people create their homes.

Seniors Week - it's on for young and old This Seniors Week, August 13 – 21, Council is celebrating with activities and events across the region. Mayor Mark Jamieson is launching a special high tea and Sunshine Coast Libraries have an exciting line-up of activities and workshops guaranteed to keep you young or young at heart! Check out Council's website and Council’s library website for details.

The exhibition features painting, photography, lino-print, digital print, mixed media, illustration and textiles. Visit Council’s gallery website for details.

Dispose of old mattresses for free Did you know you can discard up to three old mattresses for no charge at Council’s resource recovery facilities? At no cost you can also dispose of unwanted whitegoods including non-degassed fridges, gas bottles, e-waste, scrap metals, domestic quantities of oil and pesticides and other recyclables. Visit Council’s website for details.

Council meetings

What is the worst thing you’ve found about working here? Honestly it’s probably very hard for any successful agent to strike a healthy work/home life balance and I’m a self-confessed workaholic. In saying that, if I didn’t enjoy what I do so much I wouldn’t push myself so hard - so it all works out in the end. What would you like to see change in the business districts in the region? I live and work in Eumundi so I would love to have access to a supermarket. It would be wonderful if we could encourage new business to town. Eumundi is such a fabulous town with a special vibe - I wouldn’t live anywhere else now! hinternoosa.com.au.

Thanks to this caller, we were alerted to this activity and proceeded straight to

the residence. My partner and I were able to catch this person red-handed with the stolen property. We were able to charge him and send him to court for committing burglary. If this member of the community had not called police then this offence would have been completed. Maybe we would have caught up with the offender at a later date, but I am pretty sure that the owner of the items being loaded into that car would have never seen them again. This incident reinforces the fact that you can make a big difference by being alert and contacting police when you witness something out of the ordinary, something suspicious, something just doesn’t seem right.

W H

This week whilst conducting patrols, my partner and I received information via police communications that a member of the public had reported a male acting suspiciously outside a residence in Eerwah Vale. Something about the scene just didn’t feel right to the caller so they contacted police - just in case there was something unlawful about the situation they had witnessed. Unbeknown to the caller at the time, they had just witnessed a male cutting the padlocked gate to the residency. The male had then driven his unregistered and uninsured vehicle into the property, which he was driving without a licence, and proceeded to a shed on the property where he commenced filling his vehicle with the home owners property valued at thousands of dollars which he was planning on stealing.

Arts WHEN THE QUEENSLAND BALLET CAME T O T O W N Analiese Long You had to be fast to secure your seat to an Evening with Queensland Ballet as part of the Noosa Long Weekend Festival (NLWF). Both shows sold out quickly and the audience was suitably treated to a spectacular show. In an intimate Q and A, Li Cunxin deftly explained the rise and rise of the company since his appointment as artistic director three years ago. He has been part of the transformation that has seen subscriptions to the ballet increase from 1700 to 7000 in that time. Surely some of the impetus has come from the new works being presented. The new show Strictly Gershwin sold out last year and will have a return season by popular demand. Their innovative programming constantly includes new works and collaborations with international dancers and choreographers. The touring company presented three pieces at NLWF; two as ensemble and one pas de deux. The standout for my night was the first piece, Cadence, Interrupted, with music by

Ólafur Arnalds and choreography by Amy Hollingsworth. This piece was magnificent from the very first shaft of light examining the dancers as a still, energetic mass. The dancing was frenetic and often angular but so full of impulse and emotion. Amy’s choreography had principal dancers’ movements dictated by the group in the style of marionettes. At times it was pure, heart-wrenching tragedy, beautiful and always so emotive. Cont’d on p18

Arts ENGAGING COMMUNITY ART PROJECT

A RT N E WS

For Eumundi artists and art teachers Zoe Martin and Michael Ciavarella, the constant cycle of chores and heavy responsibility of providing for the family has provided the inspiration for their next creative collaboration entitled The Iron Cage Project: Sharing daily experiences through art. The duo, who previously worked on the successful international Matchbox Project, wanted to create a community art initiative that shines a light on daily duties – good and bad – and gets people talking and involved. When asked why they both felt compelled to create this interactive work, Zoe said, “We need to talk to each other about the repetitive things that sometimes get us down.” She added, “Sharing thoughts and feelings creatively can lead to constructive change.” Civa and Zoe both feel very strongly about using art to engage people and help maintain a healthy creative community. “Reflective writing and art are tangible ways to express personal and social issues, and a constructive way of healing them,” Zoe explained.

Expressions of interest are invited at Artisans Gallery Eumundi from local artisans interested in exhibiting works for inclusion in the Spring Showcase, commencing Wednesday 31 August. Both 2D and 3D works are welcome. artisanseumundi.com. The Vaudeville Affair will be staged on 5 & 6 Aug, 7.30pm at Eumundi’s School of Arts. Dress up in 1920’s attire. 18+ event. Tickets $45 ticketebo. com.au/thedoowopdolls or 03 9005 7750. Zoe and Michael will be holding workshops at the Eumundi Markets for The Iron Cage Project on Saturday 13, 20, 27 August. People will be asked to write down on a shirt their anonymous thoughts and feelings about chores like: washing, emptying the rubbish, dishes; or the weight of being responsible: paying the mortgage, servicing the car, keeping everyone’s schedule, ferrying kids, providing for the family. They are calling upon the community to help create this sculptural artwork. Bring along a white business shirt or old birdcage to donate. They will then be turned into works of art to be exhibited as a sculptural installation later in September.

Sport K I N G S O F M O U N TA I N P R I M A RY R E L AY S Eumundi State School sent five teams to the annual King of the Mountain to compete in the Primary 700m lap relays. While not gaining a podium place, Eumundi showed plenty of depth in their runners finishing 12th and 25th in the girl’s race and finishing 8th, 10th and 11th in the boys. Quite an achievement when you consider there were at least 32 girls teams and over 40 boys teams. It was a great spectacle with brothers Rhys and Liam Pepper, and Henry Long all sprinting down the finishing straight at the same time. All Eumundi runners performed well but a special mention to year 2 Kiani Baker and year 3 Kip Byrne who both filled in at the last moment. Both were able to match the pace of competitors four years their

senior. Kiani is the youngest ever girl to represent Eumundi. Congratulations to Amali S, Amali O, Alfie and Wil, who competed in the Prince and Princess of the Mountain on Saturday afternoon. The tough 3.4km race through the National Park and up part of Mount Pomona was a real challenge for all 60 competitors. The quartet did the school proud with both Amalis finishing together and picking up 2nd place medals in their age group as well as finishing in the top ten overall, completing the course in 21 minutes.

Thanks to teachers, Alasdair Scott and Bonnie Baker, and all the parents for their valued support with the teams. Also, a huge thank you to Jan Ammitzboll and the Original Eumundi Markets. They have been sponsoring our teams in the event since 2004 by paying for the team shirts. It is a great motivational factor for school running club students who train for a few months before the event each year.

Health BOXING CLEVER “Live everyday as if it were your last, because someday you’re going to be right.” That prophesy has come true for Muhammad Ali, the world’s greatest boxer. But he lived the last three decades of his life very differently from his glory years. Ali had Parkinson’s disease, suffering tremors, stiffness and slowness of his movements. Its early onset - at 42 - is likely to have been caused by the multiple blows that Ali’s brain sustained over two decades in the ring. We think of the brain as resembling the head of a cauliflower, with its gyri and sulci (hills and valleys) mimicking florets. But the brain’s texture is quite different: it is the consistency of jelly. If you were to pick a fresh one up - even with great care - your fingers would leave imprints. It is amazing to think that we knock this thing around with apparent impunity: falling off skateboards, cracking our heads against kitchen cupboards, even (like Ali) deliberately punching its bony

Jo Deverill, Emergency Medicine Specialist container with all our might. For the most part, the brain seems to withstand the abuse. This is because the human skull has evolved to take the impact of running head first into a very hard surface (say the head of another human from a different tribe, competing for meat, or a rugby ball). The brain isn’t just pressed up against the inside: it is insulated by a layer of cerebrospinal fluid, floating like a goldfish in a bowl. So it takes a lot to damage it: either the skull has to break, or the brain has to have the hell shaken out of it, or the impact has to be so severe that the brain recoils and hits the opposite side of the skull (a contracoup injury). Even then, bruised and shaken, the brain repairs itself. But it is very vulnerable during this period of recovery. Even if a second injury is minor, it can be devastating (the so-called Second Impact Syndrome). Increasingly, evidence from autopsy specimens shows that repeated hits can cause degenerative conditions like

ADVER TORIAL

Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. So we need to look after our brains very carefully. After concussion, sports players should be pulled off the field, followed by a graded return to activity. Kids need a minimum of 14 days off from contact sports. When it comes to head injuries, don’t live every day as if it were your last. That’s just plain wrongheaded.

Eat Jatz crackers are a favourite in the Arnotts range and this recipe has been around since the early 1960s when Morrow’s factory in Brisbane amalgamated with Arnotts. I think this recipe was on the side of a packet in those days and my family has regularly made it, and varied it, but this is the basic, simple version for you to try. You can use the original, peppered or fat free version. Ingredients • Packet Jatz Crackers (crushed) • 4 rashers of bacon (chopped) • 1 green capsicum (chopped) • 2 small finely chopped onions • 2 eggs

and combine with beaten eggs, milk and seasonings. Press into slab tin, then sprinkle with cheese. Bake in a moderate oven till golden - approx 25mins. Cut into squares for a great nibble with drinks or a substantial after school snack. Freezes well.

• 1/4 cup milk • Salt and Pepper • 1 tsp dry mustard

60’s Savoury slice Valda Andrews

• 1 cup grated cheese (matured) Method Fry up bacon, onion and capsicum till soft. Add to crushed crackers

Outdoors WORKING WITH THE MOON In last month’s article [issue 247] I spoke of how a majority of biodynamic and organic growers worldwide attach importance to working with the cycles of the moon. This practice has come down to us from ancient agricultural traditions and retains its relevance today. The moon has a powerful influence on the whole watery (fluid) element of the earth - all the way from its molten core to its moistureladen atmosphere. Brian Keats, who has been producing the Biodynamic Astro calendar for 29 years now, likens this to a giant moisture membrane surrounding the earth, constantly changing shape and intensity according to the position of the moon. At new moon for example, because the moon is on the

Rob Birse, Biodynamic gardener

same side of the earth as the sun, the gravitational effects of these two heavenly bodies add together, so generally we get the highest tides of the months at new moon. I say generally because there are other moon cycles which can mitigate against this. I’ll go on to explain these cycles later, but just to reinforce the power of these combined gravitational effects, scientists speak of a phenomenon known as earth tides, whereby a bulge of up to 20cm can be measured on the earth’s surface on the side facing the moon and sun! No wonder we poor watery human beings experience the effects of these full moon/new moon events! The sun travels north to the Tropic of Cancer for its winter solstice and returns to the Tropic of Capricorn in

December for the summer solstice. The moon does its own traverse of the Tropics, however this is every 27.5 days. This is known as its Ascending/ Descending cycle because just as the sun appears lower in the northern sky in our winter, so the moon appears lower, or to have descended, as it approaches its northern most limit. Both the sun and moon appear to be rising higher or ascending as they head south again. It is easy to imagine how when the moon is fully ascended at its most southerly point that its effects on plant sap flow and consequent leaf growth will be much stronger. This effect falls away as it heads north with consequent easing of plant growth and sap flow. This Descending period is a much kinder time to prune

I told the plumber (Gary) about the monitor and once he’d sawn through the pipe and removed a section he shone a torch down but couldn’t see anything, so we assumed the lizard had managed too free itself. Gary relayed a ghastly story from a house in Pomona. A young chap complained about smelly water from the water tank. The metal tank was at a low level after a dry spell. Well … inside the tank was a huge dead carpet snake that had fallen in and drowned. Seemed that the snake had squeezed in through

plants as they tend to bleed less and a better time to transplant seedlings as they have a chance to develop stronger roots before the flush of leaf growth. The other cycle to impact on the strength of moon forces is the Apogee/Perigee cycle. The moon’s orbit around the earth is elliptical, not circular, so at one point in its orbit (Apogee) it is furthest from the earth and at Perigee it is closest. Coincidences, or near coincidences of these cycles with that of the full/new moon cycle can result in dramatic increases in strength of the moon forces, resulting in major weather or tide events. It is rewarding to tune into these cycles and observe the outcomes in the world around us. Happy Gardening.

A H E A LT H WA R N I N G F O R P E O P L E W I T H WAT E R TA N K S Helen Hepburn In the attached first photo, you can see a large monitor lizard basking in the last rays of sunshine on our roof about 15 months ago. Also on the roof was a much smaller monitor lizard that had been spreadeagled on our solar panels on the same day. About an hour after I took the photo, I was taking our afternoon cuppa out the front to also enjoy the last of the autumn sunshine. As I reached the downpipe close to the house I could hear the scratching of claws going down the downpipe. I realised it was the smaller of the monitor lizards. Oh No! There was little I could do but phone for a plumber. They were closing for the night and came first thing the next morning. Meanwhile I had gone into town to buy a leaf guard to have the plumber attach it to the downpipe. This was the only downpipe on our house without a leaf guard and was on our “to do” list.

GARDENING

the broken sieve on the tank and couldn’t escape. Oh, I feel all queasy just thinking about it! Meanwhile our story hadn’t ended. About a month later after heavy rains, I went outside to check our in-ground tank only to find a dead monitor lizard with all the fresh rainwater washing over it in the sieve. It had been lying all those weeks in the piping. Oh No! Poor monitor! There was also a health issue for us as well! A quick call to the Council for advice on treating the tank water, resulted in my rushing to town to buy a large container of chorine which was duly poured into the 15,000 gallon water tank. I boiled all our drinking water for several weeks, but the smell of chlorine every shower time was enough to make me remember what had happened.

Monitor lizard basking in the sunshine.

My message to everyone on tank water is to install a leaf guard on every downpipe that is used for drinking. Also regularly check your sieve is in good order. Overhanging trees and shrubs are also a problem as they allow many creatures onto the roof.

Outdoors L I V I N G B A C K YA R D Simple Chicken Keeping

Keeping chickens can be simple, clean, low cost and enjoyable for the whole family. The key is to get the set up right before you purchase your chooks and to choose the right breed for your set up and family. KEY POINTS Selection of the Coop – Select or build a coop that is low maintenance and easy to access for cleaning and egg collecting. You can get heaps of ideas from the internet. Check dimensions of any coop you order online carefully, as some say they are suitable for 6 chickens but only suitable for two guinea pigs! Timber coops look great but they will need more maintenance and treatments for lice and mites. Position of the Perch – Never position perches over the top of another perch or over the top of the laying boxes. If you spend time planning where the chickens poop will fall at night there will be less mess to clean up each morning. A drop-through floor works great, as long as the draught factor isn’t a concern at night, and you still need to clean the poop that does fall through at least weekly. Place lime under the poop area to reduce smell. Drinkers and Feeders – The main things to consider with this equipment is that it needs to stay dry, clean and away from other wildlife. You can make your own or purchase special feeders and drinkers made especially for chickens. Some have rain guards, float systems and other features that reduce mess and contamination. Avoid getting the chicken feed on the ground

Kirstie Henning

as it will attract mice and rats and if it gets wet then get ready for a disgusting smell! Chicken Run/Fencing – If you intend on going away on short trips then consider an enclosed run off your coop. If it is snake, dog and fox proof then you can go away and not have to worry about locking them up at night. Substrate/Flooring Material – Most Council’s require a deep litter system in the coop. This means about 15cm of dry matter that works as an absorbent for odours but also a little compost system that actually enhances beneficial bugs and limits the bad, smelly ones. I use organic sugar cane mulch or my special wood shavings that deter lice and mites and add lime one a week. Using a concrete base is the best option but it is also the most expensive. Every month clean out the substrate, disinfect, hose and dry before replacing it. BEST EGG LAYING HERITAGE BREEDS • Plymouth Rocks • Pekin Bantams (if you want small cuddly chooks that also lay) • Barnevelders • Rhode Island Reds • Australorps

Letters Cont’d from pg 9 The dancers from the Jette Parker Young Artist program and choreographer Hollingsworth deserve full kudos for this piece. According to Doonan local Joanne Wright, the Noosa Long Weekend is a big family event. She has every reason to think of it that way in her third year as President. In an appealing twist she met Founding member, David Williamson, whilst on holiday in Myanmar four years ago. He convinced her not to retire from the workforce but take the President’s position where she has continued the legacy. NLW is the only not for profit group in Noosa running a festival and they have stayed firm after losing a major sponsor just a few years ago. The numbers show how popular

the event really is, with 3000 people taking to Hastings St for the official opening Carnivale Parade on the Friday night. Festival Ambassador, Damien Anthony Rossi, of the Sunday Mail and Seven’s Great South East was bubbling with support for the festival. Even with the dubious weather forecast we get to experience International, National and, importantly, local talent. They really have tried to bring everything here amid cries of ‘Come out and Play! Enjoy Winter!’ The festival has kick-started some careers but also helps to support our locals. Festival Director, Ian Mackeller, insists that production crew are all local for these events and I certainly saw some familiar Eumundi faces around all weekend!

FAV O U R I T E V I S I T O R S After reading For the Love of Birds [The Green 247], I was inspired to share an experience of my own. Approximately 11 years ago when we first moved onto our three and a half acres in Eerwah Vale, a pair of rollers [dollarbirds: Eurystomus orientalis], would visit our place each year to nest in a hollow eucalypt. Their only competitors for the hollow were a pair of galahs. On one occasion I was working on the chook house when the same pair of rollers fell into the grass, no more than eight metres from where I was standing. They immediately flew approximately 12 metres up into the small gum tree from whence they fell, then to my surprise, they locked beaks and helically

fell, once again, with wings outstretched, to the ground. This happened at least three times with no obvious harm to the birds. I can only assume this to be part of their mating ritual. They were certainly a pleasure to watch rolling in flight. As for free falling – I only witnessed this the once. I haven’t seen the rollers for many years now. In regards to a favourite bird of mine to visit our place: it would have to be the spangled drongo. Once a year a small flock of about six birds would spend most of the day close to our house and appear to be teaching their young, as they would selec t just a few trees and continuously fly from one to the other – and then disappear for many months. John and Canning Woods, Eerwah Vale.
