A HINTERLAND MOMENT
ROTARY AT WORK IN OUR COMMUNITY
Editor’s note ... One of the best parts of the job is getting to meet some of the remarkable people and over the last fortnight myself, and volunteer writer/ photographer Leo, have met some incredibly interesting and inspiring locals.
Supporting the Great Noosa Trail Walk Our club was proud to help with a wonderful community event. We served refreshment on Day 1 and handled 600 bags on each of the 3 stages, ensuring participants had what they needed where they needed it.
I’ve also spent much of the last fortnight climbing hills and exploring gardens. Hinterlanders have been flourishing outdoors and we’ve pages stuffed full of content to prove it!
Congratulations to the organisers and the participants.

Market carparking For the ever-increasing number of tourists that visit the Eumundi Markets, parking also becomes an increasing problem. To this end I have been having discussions with ECCO regarding new avenues for additional overspill car parking for Saturday’s and Wednesday’s markets. Council’s depot site located at 5 Don Napier Rd alongside the Eumundi Golf Driving Range seemed a good possible option to alleviate this issue. Council is going to undertake slashing a portion of this site closest to the Eumundi Noosa Rd and we’ll be installing appropriate crossover pipes for ease of access and egress from the site. Whilst this site has only grass covering I believe it will be a good fix for the parking issue, as it is only likely to be needed on market days when the weather is fine and visitor numbers are at their highest. Market terraces Whilst I probably sound like a broken record with regards to telling you the market terrace upgrade is imminent, once again I’m here to let you know that we’re nearly there! Engineers, landscape architects and community organisations EHA, EDCA, ECCO and council are finally
zeroing in and we expect to have this out for tender before Christmas. Discussion is still forthcoming on the best time for construction to take place, where all parties will be taking into account Eumundi Market patronage and seasonal climatic conditions. I’m listening Not too many Development Applications which come before Council are easy decisions – such as the recent Maroochy Sands, Bunnings Coolum or Aria Breeze. I take my role and responsibility extremely seriously and endeavour, to the best of my ability, to make informed, educated decisions which are in the best interests of the majority of the Sunshine Coast Community. Rest assured I read every single email and even the odd Youtube clip that concerned residents send me and I understand the angst displayed by some people and the ploy by others to make me aware of their perceived backing of a development. Please be assured that I will always consider your thoughts both positive and negative when debating and finally making my decision after the debate at each Ordinary Council Meeting, when the final decision is ultimately made.
COMMUNITY NEWS The night markets at The Eumundi Markets are back this December with art and craft stalls, music, street performers, fire shows, free outdoor movies, plus an abundance of delicious food from all corners of the globe. Community L O N E S TA R H A R R I S O N To me, there’s not much that smells as good as a happy horse nose deep in hay enjoying the afternoon sun. It’s a hypnotic sweet scent of summer grass and sunshine that can catapult me back to childhood and days of travelling through the bush as fast as my stockhorse Gunsynd would take me. I took this journey through time again last week after joining teenage horse champion Harrison Bergman and his parents Dale and Duane at their leafy front paddock in Eerwah Vale. I was lucky enough to see firsthand the chemistry between Harrison and his two favourite horses: Roses For This Cowgirl, (paddock name Tiffy), and unbroken three year-old filly Sheeza Special Touch, (nicknamed Soxie), before his trip to Fort Worth Texas to help prepare World Champion horses for the USA’s World Show. Mum Dale shared, “Harry can be found here four hours a day; caring, rugging, feeding, mucking - and of course working them.” “If he’s not working, I often find him snoring on the back of a horse or playing cards up there – Soxie is as wide as a table,” laughed Dale, a former Pony Club Chief Instructor who said horses are in her son’s blood. To say the Bergman’s are horsey is an understatement. Already at 16 Harrison has clocked up ownership of 21 steeds and has

been riding since the age of one. Harrison, who has twice been nominated for Eumundi’s Australia Day Awards, and took the prize this year in recognition of his dedication and countless achievements as a Paint Horse Association of Australia (PHAA) Youth Competitor. However two years ago, Harry was struck down with Chondromalacia patellae, an injury to the cartilage, which covers the back of the kneecap, acquired from long standing overuse. Dale explained, “He’d just won State Youth Champion and won a big plasma TV - he’d gone upstairs and was running PlayStation through it - but then Harry found he couldn’t walk much less ride.” “We couldn’t even get the jodhpurs off him for a week because he was in too much pain to undress, let alone move,” she shared. Whenever Harry rode, part of his cartilage would break off and float around behind his kneecap leaving him in agony. Cont’d on pg 18

TO OPEN OR EXCLUSIVE LIST? The more Agents on the job, the more exposure, the quicker the Sale right?... Well it all sounds good in theory, so why doesn’t it work? Put in simple terms, open listing is the appointment of multiple agents. Whoever sells the property receives the commission. Exclusive listing, as the name would suggest is the appointment of one exclusive agent, usually for a term of 90 days. The key benefit to listing your property exclusively is control. By being 100% committed to backing one agent you will have one point of contact with that one agent who in turn is 100% committed to selling your property and getting you the best result in the current market. In my experience open listed properties don’t receive sufficient attention from agents, even if there’s only a few because no one is individually responsible for getting the property sold. It is also important to remember that agents earn their income through sales, not listings. Like all business people, real estate agents dedicate time where they’re most likely to gain. They have the greatest chance of success with an exclusive listing. Lastly, there are a limited number of buyers searching for property at any given time. The number of agents you have is not going to change that. Ultimately you will achieve a higher price for your property with an exclusive agent as they have complete control over negotiations with the entire group of interested buyers. Just make sure the agent you choose has good communication skills!

Arts E U M U N D I F I L M M A K E R S C R E E N I N G AT N I F F Journalist and filmmaker Megan Kinninment will be flying the flag for Eumundi at the inaugural Noosa International Film Festival (NIFF) this November with her documentary Making Maude. Having only moved to Eumundi earlier this year, Megan was thrilled to find NIFF in its infancy and have her first documentary short included in this year’s program. “It’s a great opportunity,” she shared, “Festivals really bring people together and are wonderful for networking with likeminded movie lovers.”
Megan’s documentary Making Maude shines a light on Lismore local Michael Gates, who took the drag queen scene by storm in Sydney in the 1990s with his flamboyant sculptured polystyrene wigs that inspired the wigs used in the movie, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Gates left his country home for the strobe lights of Sydney’s gay scene where, after discovering he was HIV positive and meeting his first drag queen, he made the life-changing decision to become a drag queen himself.
of one of Sydney’s iconic drag legends.
A reporter and producer for ABC Sunshine Coast, Megan came to filmmaking as a second career later in life after 25 years as a news journalist in Northern NSW. For Megan, making short documentaries are “passion projects” and the perfect vehicle for exploring the stories of people facing a crossroad in their lives. “I’m intrigued by people living outside the norm and choosing the creative path less travelled - it takes a lot of courage to follow your creativity,” Megan explained.
Megan met Michael at film school and was inspired to tell his story. “It has been a privilege to be entrusted with the story
Making Maude has already received high praise and accolades.
“Michael Gates, aka Maude Boate, is one of those extraordinary hidden talents to be found in regional Australia,” she shared. Megan finds the collaboration between the director and subject a beautiful process and relationship of trust. “And making a movie is such an allconsuming investment in time and energy – once you start you get further and further in,” Megan explained.
“It was exciting as a new filmmaker to be selected for the St Kilda Film Festival, but to then be invited to Palm Springs International Shortfest was completely unexpected,” she shared. Making Maude will screen in the short film session 2 (mixed genres) on Saturday 5 November, 1.30pm at the J Theatre, Noosa. niff.com.au/niffshorts-films/niff-shorts-2. The documentary will also be screened as part of a Best of Makers series on the new ABC iview arts channel going live on 1st December.

Kids MAMMOTH JOURNEY Five months ago, we began a mammoth journey: this journey being the process that was our Year Eight projects. In Steiner schools, the Year Eight project is an opportunity to discover ourselves through creativity and individuality; ranging in topics from building a bookshelf from scratch, publishing an innovative novel, documenting foreign travels through extreme sports, displaying the evolution of women in collage form, and recreating historic Renaissance artwork. The project is to create an ‘artefact’ with your skills; one you can be proud of in years to come. This is what Noosa Pengari Steiner School’s Year Eight Class of 2016 accomplished.

interest they wanted to expand into a long-term experience. Our projects were a journey of selfdiscovery that brought us both obstacles and surprises, that shaped us as growing teenagers and gave us a chance to express ourselves in ways we wouldn’t have otherwise been able to. Some of us spent the bulk of the project time writing, filming or researching, while others carved wood, painted, or sewed. At the end of this journey, we were
able to present our Artefact in front of an audience of family, classmates, students and teachers. This built our selfconfidence and helped us to see how far we had progressed, from an idea to a reality. What else can we achieve? The next challenge will be our Year Twelve project. We are excited to see what this next chapter in life will bring.

They will have no doubt been inspired by the medal haul Troy Carlson earned at the recent National Age Championships in Darwin. Last week, several of the club’s

Super Squad swimmers were presented with their Swim Queensland certificates and reward packs in recognition of achieving Junior Excellence qualifying times. Well done to Troy, Kaitlyn, Chenoa, Abbie, Mitchell, Pippa, Liam and Amali. Club nights are held every Thursday, starting at 5.45pm and new members are always welcome. eumundi@ widebayswimming.org.

Health OFF LEGS
Dr Jo Deverill, Emergency Medicine Specialist
About 4 million years ago, our ancestors came down from the trees and started walking on two feet. One of the unintended consequences was the emergence of emergency medicine specialists like me. Because - as anyone who has had half a bottle of tequila in one session will tell you bipedal locomotion is inherently unstable, and generates accidents, which keep people like me gainfully employed. In those bold steps, early hominids doubled the height of their centre of gravity, and halved the number of their support structures i.e. legs. The predictable results can be found - sprawled - on the pavement after pub closing hours, carpeted floors of nursing homes, and muddy soccer fields (especially when Argentina is playing). Humans fall. And when they fall they break. Wrists, hips, collar bones - and occasionally heads. Most animals sensibly stick to four legs, and those that do venture onto two, balance themselves with a gyrating tail or
a flap of a wing. It is amazing that humans stay as upright as they do. One of the main reasons is the humble ankle joint. In most animals, ankles are straightforward to-and-fro hinges. But in humans, they pivot inwards and outwards too, enabling us to negotiate rocky hill climbs, execute nifty dance manoeuvres, and punt scrunched-up paper balls into waste paper bins on the far side of the office. Evolutionary genius. But this extra flexibility, and the extra weight it carries, makes the ankle the most injured part of our anatomy. It is stabilised by stretchy ligaments either side, which act like bungees, holding the foot to the leg by elastic force. But when overstretched - usually when their owner places weight on an inverted ankle joint these ligaments fray and bruise and voila: the sprained ankle. Pull them any harder, and they can break off a chunk of bone to which
they are attached (a particularly nasty sprain called an avulsion fracture). So if you can’t bear weight, see a doctor, who will organise an X-ray. Sprained ankles can take you off legs for days. Contrary to popular opinion, RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) doesn’t make them recover much faster. The best advice is to gradually remobilise, and if your ankle is particularly special, see a sports physio. Or you can just wait another 4 million years: by then we may have evolved an even better version. Or reverted to four legs.

Pecking order – a simple stare can say so much! There is no nonsense when it comes to chicken pecking order. In small flocks one hen will rule the roost unless you have a rooster. There is nothing set in stone as to what determines head chook, but research suggests that it tends to be the healthiest and most dominant that sits at the top of the hierarchy. “Bok, bok, bok!” said Nancy the head chook to the rest of her submissive friends. ”I have found a tasty treat and you should all come over.” The other girls race over but before they get a taste head chook Nancy gives a deathly stare. “Back off gals or I will peck you. I am the boss and I go first. If there is any left you can have some.” The other chooks wait for Nancy to finish and then they squabble over the measly leftovers. The establishment of the pecking order will be most obvious when hens begin to lay. At this age the hierarchy happens very quickly and may be a very docile agreement or a very nasty battle. If there is a rooster present, then 99% of the time he’ll be the boss. If you think your backyard laying hens don’t have a pecking order you’re wrong. Your head chook has the others under her wing and they obey her at all times.
If your hens are always fighting and pecking then there are some girls who aren’t following the orders of the head hen and the rest of the hierarchy. Chickens have a comprehensive system of communication with over 200 sounds, body language and telepathy - a simple stare can say so much. Minimise Pecking Order Problems • Ensure there is plenty of room for free ranging. • Place feeders in the middle of an area rather than to a side or corner and use more than one. • Get a rooster (10-12 hens per rooster - check your Council regulations first). • Increase your flock as larger groups (10-12 hens) tend to have less issues. • Have one nesting box per four chickens. The pecking order doesn’t stop at the head chook. There is a deputy head and subordinates right down to the lowest grade chook in small groups. citychicks.com.au

Outdoors SCULPTURAL GARDEN ON SHOW
Garden designer Cheryl Boyd and husband Bob opened their garden at Stringy Bark Cottage in Verrierdale to visitors recently, with a turnout of over 1400 people over the weekend. 25 years in the making, the garden’s sculptural installations, inspired by the work of Edna Walling, were the highlight for the crowds – as were the homemade cakes served for morning tea. Over $20,000 was raised for the No
Broiler Farm Cooroy group. Cheryl said, “Fine weather and a worthy cause ensured it was wonderful success.” “This money will assist in the ongoing legal battle for the No Broiler Farm Cooroy group,” she explained. Cheryl would like to thank the volunteers and friends who worked tirelessly all weekend, along with her generous sponsors.

GARDENING FOR KIDS Gardening for kids and babies is fun and rewarding. It’s great to see their little faces light up when they pluck a juicy homegrown strawberry that they helped grow. Or watch the bugs, bees and butterflies buzzing around their own little garden. Container gardening is great for kids. They can help plant, sow, water and harvest. Give them their own gloves, tools, harvest basket and gumboots. Using recycled containers for growing plants is great as kids have a wonderful imagination and will love planting into an old teapot! Gumboots, boots, old tins, wheelbarrows, handbags; anything

you can find. The quirkier the better! What about an old toaster? Kid friendly plants for containers include strawberries (of course), edible flowers such as Jolly Jumpups, cherry tomatoes, blueberries, beans, peas, and of course any flowers. Even babies will enjoy watching the little garden. It’s a sensory delight. Sight, touch, smell, feel, and the sound of buzzing bees will surely delight even the grumpiest of bubs. And it is now proven that we should let kids and babies literally eat dirt! Anyone for mud pies? 16

N atu re N otes HARLEQUIN BUGS Outside the Noosa Library is a large Cotton Hibiscus Bush. On the under-side rib of one of its “leathery” leaves we noticed an insect sitting on about fifty small, round eggs. Next time we passed by the eggs had hatched and on a nearby leaf was a cluster of small brightly coloured beetle-like insects. These were Hibiscus Harlequin Bugs, also called Cotton Hibiscus Bugs and a few other names relating to the fact that their main food sources are members of the Malvaceae family which includes all Hibiscus, as well as commercially grown cotton (Gossypium species). Harlequin relates to the coloured, checkered outfit worn by the traditional pantomime character. Hibiscus Bugs, Tectocoris diopthalmus, are true bugs (not beetles) in that they obtain their food by sucking sap from young shoots and blossoms, using their piercing mouth-parts like hypodermic syringes. (Beetles have chewing mouth-parts and actually eat their preferred leaves rather than just sucking the sap). Beetles and Bugs often look alike but represent different orders in the class “insecta” and are not very closely related.

Males have a bright metallic red-blue-green colouration. The “hatchlings” which are known as nymphs at this stage look similar to the males, but as the nymphs mature the females in the batch will lose that bright colouration and look like “Mum” dressed in orange. The bright colouration serves to let predators know that this potential prey is extremely distasteful. In fact they are members of the Stink Bug group and the warning should also alert humans to the obnoxious odour produced by these insects when annoyed. Females actually guard their eggs until the young have all hatched and assembled on a near-by leaf prior to dispersing among the foliage. Cotton Hibiscus Bugs can be a minor pest in gardens and more so in commercial cotton plantations. Their sap-sucking activities causes dropping of flower heads and have been shown to introduce fungi into the plants. The species is distributed throughout Eastern Australia.
All of the citrus trees we planted at our first Community Garden Working Bee are obviously loving their new home. They stand straight and vibrant with their green glossy leaves and sweet zing fragrant flowers. There are lime, mandarin, lemon and orange trees, as well as four passionfruit vines along the front fence and a coffee and pawpaw closer to the Hut. Herbs are now appearing at their feet too.
creating chaos, before another vortex formed in the opposite direction - and so it continued and many hands turned the water without ceasing for the required hour. Afterwards, we cast the magic mixture - flicking, spraying and anointing the earth to awaken her forces and begin the process of transforming this little piece of land in Eumundi Town into a rich, bountiful and vibrant garden.
We spread magic all around the land on that fine day - the Sunday before the Spring Equinox - using She Oak to flick the Biodynamic 500 Preparation we had lovingly mixed and stirred all around the Community Garden site. Everyone joined in. Everyone rejoiced!
Join us when we make the compost bays in November or bring your favourite herb to plant amongst the citrus garden or a rug to lie upon and watch it grow.
Rob Birse, our Biodynamic Farming Guide, kindly gave a handful of the cosmic homeopathic concentrate, unearthed and emptied from the cow horns that had laid in the earth, transforming, through the winter. We mixed the magic mix with water in a copper pot, stirring the said way, according to Rudolf Steiner. We mixed, making a strong vortex in one direction only to completely break it,

STO LEN FRE E RAN GE EGG S My daughters sell any extra eggs we get from our chickens on Saturday mornings at our roadside stall, along Eumundi Range Rd. It’s a self-service, honesty system and we have done this for years. It is very rare that someone will steal eggs or money. However, on Saturday morning 8th of October, some dishonest individual stole a whole esky with eight dozen free range eggs inside. The money that my daughters make pays for their chook’s food, and a little extra for their savings. Please dob in the thief [to the police] if you know who they are.
