THINKING OF SELLING OVER THE CHRISTMAS PERIOD? There are some little known advantages to selling over Christmas. • Interstate buyers are able to look for properties while here on holidays • Local buyers have more time up their sleeve to inspect properties they’ve had an eye on • Less properties are on the market over Christmas, meaning motivated buyers will have fewer prospects to tempt them • The festive season brings cheery buyers, they’re in a better mood to negotiate and more likely to act • If your target market is families, you can style your property so it lives and breathes the perfect family Christmas

A HINTERLAND MOMENT Editor’s note ... EUMUNDI ROTARY ANNUAL CHRISTMAS RAFFLE

Over the next fortnight you’re going to be so busy having a lovely, festive time in the village under starry nights, you won’t have time to do chores, clean the house, prep the summer garden and BBQ, or write your Christmas Cards – so I highly recommend you get it all done now. It might be worth investing in a Santa hat, or elf ears, for you and the family (and dog) as they’ll be getting a lot of use. Also, if you don’t have one already, a good picnic blanket, and basket...and perhaps a portable wine chiller too. Prepare to get festive people!

Business EUMUNDI’S NEW ECO BUSINESS HUB After two years in the planning, Project Consultant for Our Village Eumundi, Louise Formosa, has announced development applications will be submitted to Sunshine Coast Council this week. A Development Application for Stage One and a Development Application for Preliminary Approval for Stage Two will be put forward for the proposed eco-development which includes: the Highway Motors and Butter Factory sites on Memorial Dr, the old railway corridor, and the dwellings on Cook St. Working with local architect Jolyon Robinson of Robinsons Architects and landscape designers James Birrell from Design Lab, Our Village Eumundi is the combined vision of the Formosa family - Louis and Janet and their daughters Jenny and Louise - who are the long term owners and operators of Eumundi Parkside and Eumundi Square. Louise Formosa shared that she sees this development as a social focal point for the town, connecting the community and engaging them both culturally and environmentally. “Stage

One of Our Village Eumundi concentrates on reinvigorating the Highway Motors building while taking care that the development is sympathetic to the natural topography of the site and the heritage of the existing buildings and corridor,” she said. “The development incorporates a social ‘piazza’ area where locals and visitors alike can buy their locally-sourced and organic produce and visit complementary businesses such as professional advisors, health and wellbeing practitioners, or simply enjoy some ‘up-cycled’ retail therapy,” Louise explained. The project intends to incorporate environmental best practice standards such as: OSCA waste composting system, underground water storage and permaculture features. “We are setting some ambitious but achievable sustainability targets including operating ‘off the grid’ within 10 years as a result of solar energy,” Louise enthused, “We also intend to reduce mains water usage Cont’d on pg 6

COMMUNITY INFORMATION SESSION This reinterpretation of disused space will be sympathetic to the natural topography of the site and the heritage of the existing buildings and corridor. The hub will incorporate environmental best practice standards such as the OSCA composting system , underground water storage, ‘off the grid’ targets as well as permacultural features operating throughout the village. Focussed on sustainable and eco-accredited products and services, Our Village Eumundi will welcome both locals and visitors seven days a week by offering a mix of retail, office and healing space surrounded by vertical, sensory as well as native gardens, children’s creative play areas, and landscape elements that accommodate musical and visual creativity.

Join us to learn more about Our Village Eumundi – the proposed eco-accredited business hub planned for the old Highway Motors site (106, 108 and 110 Memorial Drive), the Old Butter Factory Site (124 Memorial Drive), the old railway corridor and 1&3 Cook Street. Property talk

WHY LOCAL IS BETTER We are very lucky here in the Hinterland to enjoy the peace and quiet that country living has to offer while at the same time our location allows us to take advantage of the beaches, shops and businesses of Noosa. However, when it comes to choosing an agent to sell your home, Noosa falls short. For this you will need a local hinterland agent. SO WHY IS LOCAL BETTER? We can probably narrow it down to three good reasons: SUBURB KNOWLEDGE An agent who can talk with authority about the suburb will be able to give the prospective buyer more information, hold a conversation for longer and earn the trust of a buyer. CORRECT VALUATION If an agent has sold the house across the road, the one down the street and over the back fence there is a good chance they know what price point to market the home at. An out of area agent can look up the selling prices of the homes and scroll though photos but they won’t have actually been through previously sold houses to know how they really compare to the current listing. A lack of local knowledge would also impact their ability to value correctly. For example, impending development can impact a property’s sold price. This will not be evident through web photos and sales data. HEALTHY NETWORK OF PROSPECTIVE BUYERS An agent with other listings in the suburb will meet buyers at other home opens. A buyer will often say that the property they are viewing isn’t quite right because they are looking to tick a few other boxes. A good agent will take a note of this and if your property is a match, they can make contact with the prospects and invite them to view before the house is even advertised. Bottom line, a good local agent will give you the opportunity to have your house sold quickly at a good price.

PREMIUM RESULTS START WITH PLANNING AND A POWERFUL SELLING STRATEGY

“We’re dedicated to preserving the Eumundi way of life, and catering for local needs while raising the bar in ecotourism.” The community is invited to attend an information session held on site from 1.15pm on Monday, 5 December. Arts N I F F IN EU MUN DI

SOR GET SET TO PERFORM!

Eumundi’s School of Arts hosted the Noosa International Film Festival (NIFF) this month. Many movie goers commented on the calibre and professionalism of this inaugural event. The Eumundi screenings had a lovely community vibe which gave cineastes, filmmakers and volunteers the chance to mingle and enjoy cake and a cuppa provided by Eumundi Rotary.

All the hard work is about to pay off for Eumundi’s School of Rock (SOR) kids. After months of practice with their Rock’n Roll tutors, the three bands are set to perform on Friday 9 December from 6-10pm, at the Eumundi School of Arts. The 19 aspiring musicians, across a range of musical disciplines, will take to the stage alongside some of the best in the business. Local songstress Katie Noonan enthused, “The hard work will culminate in a concert performing alongside myself, Jack Carty and The Band of Frequencies.”

The Eumundi World Cinema members did much of the planning and grunt work behind the scenes of the 140 local and international films screened at five venues in the Noosa region over the four day event.

Since August the students have received free, weekly tutoring from: ARIA winning, Platinum selling Katie Noonan and Darren Percival; from Band of Frequencies: guitarist/vocalist Shannon Sol Carroll, bassist/ trumpeter Owen Newcomb, pianist Andrew Szumowski; Conservitorium of Music trained drummer Alice Jones and National Jazz Award winning saxophonist and Con teacher Zac Hurren.

A RT N E WS

Shannon said the experience has really built the kid’s selfdiscipline and composure needed to perform at a real life gig. “They’ll be so nervous but determination kicks in – and they’ll have an amazing feeling of accomplishment and confidence.” As the instigator, Katie shared her motivation for forming SOR, “We have an important role in nurturing enduring cultural and arts endeavour in this region. “This provides for enhanced cultural tourism and community engagement as well as to encourage and incubate future talent to sustainable arts practice.” Tickets available through: eumundisor.eventbrite.com.au or SOR FB page.

Kids SWIM CLUB NIGHT At a recent Swim Club night, Club President, Wendy Walker was delighted to hand over a cheque for $1,077 to Sunshine Butterflies Chairman, Shaun Baker. This represented half of the funds raised by the Swim-athon. It was a great achievement for all the swimmers involved, and a worthy local charity to support. Thursday nights at the pool have been very busy, with all the children showing improvement with their times and techniques. Congratulations to Troy, Kaitlyn and Chenoa on their selection for the Wide Bay Region Relay teams to compete at the State Championships in December. This weekend, they and several

other Super Squad swimmers will be competing at the Chandler pool in Brisbane in the Long Course Medal events. Next weekend, Eumundi Club will have 17 swimmers participating in the Gympie Gold Rush Meet. Good luck to them all. The club’s committee met last week to discuss the inaugural Eumundi Swim Carnival to be hosted in March next year. We are expecting over 200 swimmers from all over the Wide Bay region to attend and would love to hear from any potential sponsors. Packages from $75 upwards are available and the club is hoping to make this a successful annual community event. eumundi@widebayswimming.org

Health STROKE OF GOOD FORTUNE

Dr Jo Deverill, Emergency Medicine Specialist

The Sunway Taihulight may sound like a Chinese utility vehicle, but it is actually the world’s fastest supercomputer. If you are a nerdy sort, you may know that it has a speed of 93 petaflops. A petaflop is a quadrillion calculations per second; so it is fair enough to say that the Sunway Taihulight could probably figure out the total cost of your vegetables even faster than the chatty lady at the market. However, the human brain is an order of magnitude more complex. It’s 100 billion neurones aren’t solid, like silicon chips. They are more like a sea of anemones: morphing, touching each other, extending and responding; so the brain is nuanced and mysterious, which is why it can do stuff like wondering at the appearance of a super moon, while feeling a little sad and pensive at the fact that it isn’t going to see another one for 36 years. The Sunway Taihulight doesn’t do sad and pensive. It weighs 150 tonnes and uses about the same amount of energy as the new Valdora Solar Farm will produce. Furthermore, Hannibal Lecter fans will point out that you can’t sauté it and eat it. So, you have a veritable worldbeating supercomputer between your ears and while you got yours for free, it is unbearably precious. You need to look after

it: don’t addle it with alcohol or drugs, don’t bang it against a goalpost, and take it to a brain mechanic - like me - at the first signs of trouble. Because they could be strokes. These happen when blood clots stick in blood vessels supplying the brain. It is completely reliant on a continual flow of oxygen and glucose via the blood stream. Even a tiny clot - the size of a grain of rice - can cause really weird disruptions: a clumsy hand, a lop-sided mouth, a tingling leg, a dark shadow across your vision, jumbled speech, a sense of being spun around and around (and other symptoms too numerous to list here). If you call an ambulance with a suspected stroke, emergency doctors can stick you in a scanner and refer you to a stroke expert within minutes. Prompt action from them - for instance in the form of clot-busting drugs - can restore blood supply. Finally, with

TEA AND C O M PA N Y

the help of rehab experts like occupational therapists, injured brains can recover. Now there’s a stroke of good fortune.

Having grown up in an Italian family, the importance of family and food and love is deeply seated within my soul. These three things always go hand in hand. There is no family without love and there is no love without food to share with the family - especially during the festive season. This recipe is very traditional and appears on the table only during the Christmas period. CHRISTMAS YULE LOG The Yule Log, or Tronchetto di natale, is a traditional Christmas cake that the Italians adopted from the French many decades ago. It’s very common in the Italian households during the festive season and there’s always a friendly competition to see who makes the most beautiful, best tasting one. Everyone personalises their filling and decorations. It can be filled with jam, custard, chestnut puree and cream mixed together, sweetened ricotta or just whatever is available at the time - your imagination is the limit! The shape and form however always looks like of a log. I love making this impressive cake, especially for my non-Italian friends. It always gets lots of compliments.

Ingredients

Gently fold into egg mix a little at a time until smooth and fluffy. Line square oven tray with baking paper, grease with a little oil and sprinkle with sugar. Put mix onto tray and level it out with a spatula. Put into preheated oven for 10mins.

• 150g plain flour • 150g castor sugar • 6 eggs at room temp • 2 tsp baking powder • 200ml cream • 200g dark cooking chocolate • Pinch salt Preparation Preheat oven to 180°C. Separate yolks and egg whites. Add half of the sugar to whites and whip until firm, then put aside. Add remaining sugar to the yolks and beat until thick. Fold beaten whites into yolks, a little at a time until combined. Sift flour, salt and baking powder together.

The cake is ready when top starts to turn golden. Remove cake from tray by lifting it with baking paper. Sprinkle top with sugar, then cover cake with cling wrap so it remains moist when cooling and can easily be rolled. Grate chocolate and slowly bring cream to boil over low heat. Add grated chocolate and stir until all melted. Place the pot with the cream mixture into a bowl with ice cold water and beat the mixture with an electric mixer for approx 15mins. The end result should be a dense and fluffy cream. When cake is cold, remove cling wrap and transfer onto a board.

Transfer cake onto a new piece of cling wrap as this will help you with rolling. Spread chocolate mix onto cake (leaving enough for outside covering) and then using cling wrap, gently roll cake forming a nice even roll. You may leave cling wrap on while in the fridge as this will help with keeping the shape. Place in fridge for approx 1 hour until firm. When roll is firm remove from fridge and remove cling wrap. Cut roll into two pieces, one larger and one smaller which will be used to make the branch. You may decide to cut on an angle as this will make it easier to attach together. Place the branches on serving tray. Cover outside of branch with remaining chocolate mix. Using a fork, run prongs gently over icing to make bark effect. Decorate with the Christmas cake decorations you like. This is a very impressive Christmas dessert and you can personalise it in whatever way you want.

Christmas is coming and the goslings are getting fat at Jennifer Donnelly’s Eumundi Goose Farm. “It’s the first goose farm in Queensland”, said Jennifer proudly; before adding, “that’s probably because so much work goes into hand rearing the dress table birds.” Aside from tending to them morning and night, once hatched from a clutch of 14 she raises the goslings under a heat lamp then into the chick box until at four weeks the fledglings are taken under the wing of the existing flock. “It really is a labour of love,” she explained. A point punctuated by a mother goose marching her gaggle past us and under the wire into the adjoining property where most hinterland locals, myself included, stop to watch them bathe on the neighbour’s pond. “They certainly add to the environment”, she said of the birds that return home at dusk. It is here, under shelter and behind the chicken wire, they are safest from marauding wild dogs and foxes, although not the curious pythons that have to be regularly rehoused. Glancing around it is hard to believe that it all happened by chance five years ago when two geese waddled up from down the road. After a fox took them, Jennifer, a solicitor dealing with criminal and family litigation, went out and bought three others. However, while she was away at work her husband Roy left the pen open and they too were taken by a fox. “As punishment I went out and bought a gaggle of 26 goslings”, she smiled. “That was three years ago and Roy hasn’t left the pen open again!”

land. It may have started out as a hobby but now, with over 100 goslings being processed in Toowoomba this November, Jennifer is emphatic that this year’s yield proves she is a primary food producer and not a hobbyist. With each 16 week-old bird reaching 2-3kg and each free-range organic hand reared kilo weighing in at $40 her passion has certainly paid off. With breeds including the heavy-set Toulouse homebodies, Emden, Orland and the docile and friendly Pilgrim geese, Jennifer is quick to point out that being a “rich, full flavoured meat” makes goose “the most beautiful meat in the world”. “It’s taken a long time to get to this point”, Jennifer shared, as she sat out under the palm fronds watching her flock come and go on the lush

“My chicken won’t stand up and I think she has lost the use of her legs.” This is a classic symptom of a neurotoxin produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. The lethal toxin causes Botulism and paralyses the nervous system usually starting with the legs, then the neck, followed by the throat muscles. Unfortunately, it is usually untreatable and leads to death within a day or two. Common places this bacteria will thrive is in old foods, carcasses and dams (with dead vegetation around edges). 1. Check your feed regularly and immediately throw away wet or damp food. Commercial feed is often sold in bags that are not waterproof (even though they look it!). Clumps of food in the bag or strange, smelly feed should never be fed to poultry. Buy commercial feed from a place that would have a high turnover of food. 2. Store feed in a waterproof container and make sure it is stored in a COOL, dry place out of direct sunlight.

4. Compost showing signs of mould on items such as fruit, vegetables and bread should not be accessible to poultry. Only let them access compost piles once the contents have broken down and nearly invisible (eg: after three months to be safe). 5. In dry weather vegetation around a dam can die off and leach the toxin into the water. Restrict access to dams if this occurs. 6. Remove any dead birds, mice or other animals immediately so they are not pecked at. If you suspect botulism then keep your healthy flock in a restricted area where you know none of the above are accessible. Separate any birds showing symptoms by placing them in a cage in a cool place. Do not force feed food or water as they may have problems swallowing anything. Using a product that detoxes can reduce the symptoms but seek advice from a professional in avian care as soon as possible. citychicks.com.au

3. Poultry love your kitchen scraps and it is great that they don’t go to waste. However, don’t feed items that you wouldn’t eat yourself. Old, mouldy food is a

It is all about understanding the process. The home garden should be the ultimate wellness tool for yourself and your family, so I trust these tips will push your food producing passion. Cell strength with silica The second player in the cell-strengthening duo is silica. This mineral is actually the second most abundant mineral on the planet and the clay and sand component of your soil is made from silica. However, recent research has revealed that there is a major silica drought amidst this abundance. Chlorinated water and our neglect of soil biology has effected silica availability. Most soil tests reveal a screaming shortage and this can have a major impact as silica is important for plant resilience. Silica is the building block for phloem and xylem the nutrient pathways around the plant - so the uptake of all nutrients has a silica link. Silica determines stem strength,

However, the most important recent finding about this forgotten mineral relates to plant immunity. We now understand that plants have a dynamic immune system that helps them fight against insects and disease. The stronger the plant’s immune system, the less the need for chemical intervention. Feel free to call the Nutritech Solutions help line: 5472 9926, if you require further guidance. N atu re N otes SURPRISE VISITOR Last week, just before coming in for the evening, my husband discovered a very large snake entwined in bird netting close to our drive and only metres from our house. The snake had not been there earlier as I had been watering that spot. Several weeks ago, I had draped the netting around some newly planted mondo grass and ferns to keep brush turkeys and bandicoots out till the plants had established. Kon Hepers had recently written a comprehensive Nature Notes on venomous snakes in our Eumundi “Green”, yet somehow this snake didn’t quite fit with what I had read - though he did say that brown snakes are variable in both size and colouring. I phoned Kon and he kindly came down and quickly established that it was indeed a brown snake. The head of the snake was exposed, but the neck of the snake was firmly entwined as the snake had rolled several times in its efforts to free itself. The brown snakes I knew well from my NSW farm days in the country were much darker and more slender. Kon and I quickly agreed that we should call for help and phoned “The Snake Catcher” from the Sunshine Coast. Matt arrived just on dark and we soon realised that, to safely free the snake, he would have to take it away to get extra help to hold it down and carefully cut the netting away. He said he would release the snake in a secluded place well away from habitation the next day.

drier areas rather than our rainforest area. I would always expect a red bellied black, carpet or the smaller tree snakes to be regulars in our area. However, Matt said that due to the hot and dry weather he had received many call outs for all types of snakes as they have been looking for water. Yes, we had to pay to have Matt come out, but it was worth every cent. Killing the snake was not an option for any of us. Please remember snakes are a protected species in any event. The phone number for The Snake Catchers is: 0409 536 000. I would suggest everyone write this number down … as, like us … these situations arrive when least expected. *The other issue to say here and now is the one of the bird netting. I think it’s a very dangerous product to use in the garden either draped on the ground as mine was, or engulfing fruit trees as flying foxes and other fauna can become entangled and die a slow and horrible death. I have now removed the bird netting and replaced it with some wire mesh. Also the plastic mesh I buy by the roll from a large hardware store will be much more wildlife friendly.

COMMUNITY GARDEN The Eumundi Community Garden got the go ahead a year ago by Council, under the wings of Eumundi & District Community Assoc. (EDCA), and the small team have practiced patience a’plenty as dialogues with other Community Groups sharing the space have been productive. Designs have been drawn up (and redrawn!), surveyors have determined boundaries, countless meetings have been held and more! The work has built invaluable friendships and prepared the fertile soil for all of the dream seeds and visioning to begin to grow. It was most rewarding to plant the citrus orchard and spread the BD500 over the land. It was loads of fun raising money serving sausages at Bunnings. Thank you to: Anja for your gathered treasures, contacts and knowledge; Brian for your steadfast support; Georgie and Janet for your skills and hours of drawings and

The community gardeners will gather to construct a three bay compost system. The group will meet on Sun 27 Nov, from 8am – 12pm, and the last Sundays of the month in Jan and Feb. It would be wonderful to have some more caring hands on board as we really start to get down and dirty! BYO: hat, sunscreen, water, sustenance to share, spade and any herbs from your garden patch you have an abundance of. You are warmly invited and welcome to come along. The group will also hold the last meeting for the year at the Imperial on Friday 2 December. Bridget: 0402 142 030 or Anja: 0401 641 270.

Letters Cont’d from pg 14 However, her 90 breeding birds with names like Scully, Dolly and Charlie, won’t end up as confit in a crockpot. “We’re not eating them!”, she said emphatically of these select birds that mate for life, which in their case can be up to 25 years. When I asked why she hadn’t opted for chickens Jennifer answered thick and fast; “Unlike chickens, geese don’t smell or cause dust, being vegetarian they graze and don’t scratch. And they make excellent

weeders”. Not only do they keep the weeds down they fertilise as they go! They are also to my mind excellent watch dogs hissing as they do when I come too close to their offspring or straw nests. But best of all, Jennifer said watching these elegant, playful and protective waterfowl has all the meditative benefits of a fish tank. ”It’s so restful, I call it bird therapy.”
