HINTERLAND MOMENTS

Community journalism is a dying breed, sensationalism has become the norm, advertorial the major content source and the local voice has become harder to hear. We are so, so lucky to have the Green. I’m told time and time again how unique we are – not just nationally but internationally! I think that’s a testament to the volunteer writers and photographers who are passionate about the written word, the captured moment, and their unique community. I have a remarkable Green team who go above and beyond every single issue to get this magazine into the hands of readers once a fortnight; proofers, inserters, deliverers, who drop everything to take up the call of the Green. My designer Lil who is in the editorial trenches with me, lovingly handles every story and photo to make them not only fit but look their best. Thanks to wonderful accounts women who take our frantic queries and crazy requests and always restore order, and the ECCO Board and General Manager; without their backing and belief in The Green, we would literally go the way of so many other departed country newspapers and magazines. Thank you so much everyone for supporting, contributing, advertising and, most importantly, reading. See you in 2017!

Business CHUCK COMES TO TOWN BARING NEW BREW When you get the call to sample three new brews from Australia’s master brewer Dr Chuck Hahn – you answer! Last Wednesday, a group of around 30 beer loving locals and industry experts had the opportunity to trial three beers-in-the-making for the new Eumundi lager craft brewery which is set to open at the Imperial Hotel early next year. International food and beverage company Lion Nathan, announced the partnership with Eumundi’s Imperial Hotel to build a micro-brewery onsite. Chuck, who is Brewmaster for Lion and the man behind many much-loved Australian brews, explained he wanted to

in favour of the more subtle ginger infused beer.

develop a unique beer that was challenging but not alienating for people and that championed regional flavours. Chuck’s two sample brews were infused with varying degrees of ginger – sourced from Eumundi’s renowned Templeton Ginger Farm. Chuck explained he was using local ingredients and wanted the flavours and aromas of the beer to slowly build with each sip. The Lion brewers were keen for feedback from the group of tasters who voted resoundingly

Also on tap for trial was a mid-strength India Pale Ale developed by Jim Hollars, Lion’s Craft Brand Ambassador. The brewers shared they were considering brewing to season and were open to experimenting with Belgium style beers infused with macadamia or even coffee.

Imperial Hotel owner Michael Arnett explained the reason behind involving locals in the initial tastings was to ensure the people of Eumundi find the new brews extremely drinkable. “It’s the locals we’re making these beers for – without locals there is no journey,” Michael explained. Chuck surmised by saying, “Wine gentrifies but beer unifies.”

EUMUNDI’S CHRISTMAS CAROLS Eumundi’s Christmas Carols were a lovely, colourful night celebrating our community and Christmas. Despite rain before and after the show, the amphitheatre was full of families.

CHAMBER REPORT Chamber has certainly had a big year! After the AGM in May, the new chamber management committee has dedicated their time to find out what businesses in town really want from their Chamber and what the priorities are. Results from a member’s survey has revealed some of the most pressing issues were: the need for a street upgrade; improved visitation to the township on non-market days; help to boost night trade; and changing the time of day for chamber functions. From this, Chamber has conducted investigations into Council’s previous plans to allocate funds to our streetscape which seem to have “fallen off the budget radar” in recent years. Chamber have more information now and is ready to lobby Council in 2017. We’ve also changed tack with our marketing of Eumundi township by focusing less on promoting businesses being open “seven days a week”, and focusing more on what visitors could experience at least one extra day of the week. To do this, we created a new campaign named “meet, make and share” to attract more

Louise Formosa, Secretary

visitors on Fridays. With over 15 businesses now participating, and brochures printed, we are well on our way in promoting this event. Special thanks to ECCO for their support and funding of the project. Chamber is also working with members and ECCO to determine the feasibility of “lighting up Eumundi” on a permanent basis throughout the year to create an even more attractive streetscape for night trade. More networking nights have been introduced which have proven to be very fun, cheerful and constructive with great member feedback. We’ve also been working on many more events and campaigns such as: 50 Year Sunshine Coast Anniversary celebrations; busking permits; Eumundi Country Music Festival; and keeping up with new membership applications which the management committee are very happy about! Chamber wishes to take this opportunity to thank all businesses in town for their support and hopes everyone has a very safe, happy and prosperous New Year! 6

Community But the standouts were the dancers this year, (including a duo from Templeton Dance Studio), especially the Dirty Dancing lift - the crowd went wild! Eumundi moments included; the head falling off Frosty the Snowman, and drag queens Melony Brests and Sal Manella leading Santa into the amphitheatre, all riding grumpy camels. Melissa said it was so much fun and so much work! But she is already thinking ahead, “I already know how I want the stage to look next year!

BIG YEAR FOR ECCO

Greg Molyneux, Eumundi Rotary President During the course of 2016, Eumundi Rotary has been hard at work making a difference within our community. Here are some examples of our work: • Conducted Pride in Work Awards night to recognise excellence in workmanship by our town’s proprietors and staff members. • Implemented an RV Pack questionnaire to determine what visitors think of our town, which in turn enabled us to provide feedback to our town’s businesses. • Provided a BBQ for Australia Day, ANZAC Day and Christmas Carols. • Volunteered car parking on nominated market days each month. • Responded in the aftermath of a house fire to assist the residents to move furniture and effects to alternative accommodation. • Participated in and officiated at both ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day activities. • Conducted a fundraiser Bush Dance in support of three animal welfare organisations.

EDCA REPORT

• Distributed a questionnaire as an insert in the Green to ask locals to identify where there are areas of need in our town and how Eumundi Rotary might be able to help. • Participated in the Great Noosa Trail Walk with a popup café and BBQ, and by moving participants’ luggage. • Eumundi State School prize presentation of Best All Round Year 6 student. • Supported the Noosa International Film Festival and the Eumundi World Cinema providing hospitality services to attendees. • Planning of a major skateboarding event to be held within our region between Mar-Aug 2017. • Planning of the annual Eumundi Rotary Long Lunch 2017. We’ve had a very fruitful year and we look forward to even closer engagement with our community in 2017. Our strong and vibrant club meets in the CWA Hall every Thursday, 6 pm. Visitors and prospective members always welcome. Merry Christmas to all.

In 2016 the carpark welcomed more than 100,000 cars carrying 300,000 visitors to our markets. This friendly and welcoming parking service generated an operating surplus that enabled donations of $60,000 to local notfor-profits and repatriated around $200,000 into community, business and cultural initiatives that included: the rickety bridge at Caplick Park Playground; Spirit of Orb sculpture; Sunshine Coast Horizon Festival; Eumundi School of Rock; Meet, Make, Share Friday animations; and the Eumundi Lights Up night markets. Carpark profits are also making a significant contribution to the 2017 Terraces $1.4million redevelopment as well as keeping our beloved Green in print, communicating Eumundi events and special activities via our popular Facebook pages websites and e-blasts. We have also made a number of changes to ensure our carpark volunteers feel as comfortable and appreciated as much possible. Our RV Stopover has proved to be a wonderful community offering for our mobile visitors and the RV Welcome Pack, supported by Rotary, has been appreciated by visitors who

Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher, GM

continually comment on how unique and hospitable our Eumundi Township is. In 2016, our Community Bus has been used mainly for Thursday community shopping trips and Full Moon Dances, but we are working on new strategies for 2017 to utilise the bus for community purposes including services that will assist the elderly, youth as well as visitors to our township. The Green, our much treasured community magazine, regularly receives compliments regarding its content, style and overall community presence. In 2016 we’ve seen an increase in advertising - which has assisted greatly in reducing subsidisation for this important voice. As of 2017, Eumundi Combined Community Organisation Ltd (ECCO) will be formally trading as Experience Eumundi. This branding focus will promote tourism and business opportunities that enhance Eumundi and region - not only as the Coast’s biggest tourist attraction, but also as a viable business community and a friendly village of great liveability. We are also undertaking trademarking of this iconic brand and logo.

Adrian Combes, President EDCA

It’s been yet again another year that’s flown by in a blink with so much happening in this wonderful town of ours. The Eumundi District Community Association (EDCA) would also like to acknowledge our amazing stallholders on our Wednesday markets on the Terraces for another great year. Without you EDCA would be unable to do its community works. Huge thanks to our ECCO representatives Louise Formosa and Paul Curtis. This year EDCA has taken custodianship of the old scout hall in Memorial Dr as our home base. As many would be aware this has given us the opportunity via a very active sub-committee to begin the works on the much-awaited community gardens.

this happen. We hope that soon, via a grant put forward by MLA Ted O’Brien, the hall will be fully air-conditioned. Work has been progressing on our current major project, the Eumundi Hamlets: an over 50s village, at 21 Memorial Dr. We hope to soon make some exciting announcements around this project. At our recent Christmas function, it was my honour to present our first ever life memberships to three of our longest standing members; Doreen Cunninton, Jack Murray and Joy Cameron. EDCA would like to wish all a very merry Xmas and a happy New Year.

Many hours of work have gone into renovating the internals of the hall so a big thank you to Adrian and Lainie Adams for their hard work and elbow grease in making

COMMUNITY NEWS Gill Brownhill, founder of Eumundi Wildlife Centre, has been hospitalised in Nambour for three months. Missing the Centre she may have to go into respite if she is too ill to return. Gill donated the Wildlife Centre to the RSPCA in 2014. Sunshine Coast attracted a 45% increase in expenditure (to $266.5 million) by international tourists in the year to Sept 2016 - an all-time regional record.

Planning constraints of a 90 bed aged care facility at Lake Weyba is awaiting approval with Noosa Council. Concern has been raised about rezoning the designated koala habitat that adjoins Noosa National Park. The multiple dwelling retirement and special needs centre would be two storeys with meeting rooms, cafe, hairdressing salon, theatre and private dining.

Community EHA REPORT

Wendy Birrell, Manager Discover Eumundi

The Eumundi and District Historical Association (EHA) oversee the running of the Original Eumundi Markets, Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre (DE) and is trustee of the Eumundi School of Arts hall. This year ‘softfall’ surfacing was put through the Original Eumundi Markets area and many of the stall popups were replaced. Recent condition reports were done on the 100 year old buildings School of Arts (SOA) and Discover Eumundi (DE) with a plan setup to work through maintenance issues. Both buildings will be repainted in the near future and plans are underway to do major works on the toilets at the hall. This year the SOA had a large engineered beam put in above the stage to meet safety requirements to hang the beautiful, new red curtain. More beams were put in to hang lighting in the future and side curtains and a pelmet for the stage are on order. The roof and guttering of the annexe to the side of the hall was replaced and insulation added. A large shed erected at the rear of the hall allows a number of community groups much needed storage space at no charge.

DE continues to assist Eumundi’s many visitors. DE displays many of Eumundi’s businesses leaflets and restocks leaflets in locations throughout town. Many locals take advantage of the photocopying, scanning, emailing and printing services. As a Heritage Centre DE handles enquiries for town history and holds over 3,500 photos from the 1880’s - available for non-profit use. Family history enquiries - from first settlement in the late 1890’s - has increased greatly this year. DE is developing a resource kit for local primary schools when planning a visit to the Centre which will link objects, photos and information with the National Curriculum. This’ll be sent out to schools in 2017 and available to download from the DE website. The EHA is a major supporter of many Eumundi events including Australia Day Awards, ANZAC Day, Remembrance Day and Eumundi Christmas Carols. The EHA is proud to support a number of community endeavours and preserve the history of the town and the buildings in its care for future generations.

WORLD CINEMA REPORT It’s that time of the year and thoughts turn to family, sharing, gratitude, celebration, love, friendship and new beginnings. It’s no different at Eumundi World Cinema this month, where we have lots to celebrate after a very successful year. We now have a strong membership base, fabulous sponsors, many a movie highlight chosen by our highly discerning members, fabulous food and a happy vibe delivered by our beautiful members, their friends and family throughout the year. This year we purchased our own film equipment including screen, projector and speakers. This enabled us to put Eumundi on the world filmmaker map by screening two days of short films for the Noosa International Film Festival in November. We are very grateful to our loyal sponsors Starry Nights Outdoor Movies, Parti Events, Berkelouw Books, Elfi@TheNest Eumundi for their support throughout

the year with time, energy and commitment. And thanks to our “stuck like glue” hard working committee Arnold Kopff and Mick Barton - you guys rock! Thanks also to our volunteers, members and friends. You are invited to join us in 2017 for $80 (new members) or $60 (renewing members) or take out a $50 mini-me membership to catch 5 movies - we screen 11 movies from Feb until Dec. This would make a great Christmas Gift! Come along to celebrate family and friendship with us on Wed 21 December for the screening of La Famille Bélier by director Éric Lartigau at 6.40pm to end the Eumundi year of film and enjoy our festive end of year party prepared by our enigmatic chefs Johnjon Hutcheon and Mark Purcell. We wish you all a very happy Christmas and a prosperous, creative and successful New Year. eumundiworldcinema.com. 9

The Eumundi School of Arts Hall was packed with excited locals on Friday 9 December to hear Eumundi School of Rock (SOR) perform with Katie Noonan, Jack Carty and Band of Frequencies. SOR was the brain child of local muso Katie Noonan who shared that it was wonderful to see the kids shine. “It was so rewarding to see how much each student has grown in self-confidence and in their musical abilities,” Katie enthused. “It was particularly touching to observe all the teacher’s loving encouragement - we are lucky to have world class teachers - OJ, Shannon, Alice, Andrew, Zac and Ilsa - care so much about developing our young talent. “Students, parents, teachers, sponsors and volunteers - we are a richer community thanks to all of you!” Katie shared.

HINTERLAND’S SOUNDTRACK FOR SUMMER Eumundi singer-songwriter Tobias has been passionate about making music for most of his life. He toured with musicians in his 20s and 30s but it wasn’t his own “thing” and he wasn’t committed. But when Tobias’s best friend died five years ago it made him evaluate his life’s path. His relationship had fallen apart and just finished studying when he had an epiphany – if not now, when? “I realised I wasn’t doing what I wanted to do. I’d always wanted to be a musician full time, so I finally just did it – with the help of some friends,” Tobias explained. Now with the backing of girlfriend Jules, his family and friends, Tobias is forging a career making beautiful music full-time and loving the creative journey - though he admits it’s been hard work. “Spending a grand to get to a gig that makes $40… it’s been a rude awakening that’s for sure, but also rewarding,” Tobias said.

Tobias’ new album Alive is his second offering as a solo artist and follows the debut album, Toby Robinson. Known for his heartfelt songwriting and tender folk music, Alive heralds an evolution of sound and new approach to his craft. Tobias’ acoustic, folksy sound has developed into something more electric – a marriage he calls ‘folk-tronic’. “So you keep the acoustic themes throughout the music but add the ‘alive’ sound of electric guitars - that’s something I’ll be doing with my next songs as well,” he shared. Alive is full of elegantly crafted music that makes you want to jump into the ocean, go camping, hug your friends, run in slow-mo through a rainforest and feel… well… alive! None more so than his latest single When the Sun Comes Up (the horns are a stroke of genius; just try and not dance!) It should be the Hinterland’s 10

soundtrack this summer. Tobias enthused he’s loved touring the new songs along the east coast for the last six weeks, and is now back in the ‘hood playing a few local gigs. Tobias was based in Melbourne for the past ten years, but since touring and writing music full-time he’s returned to his Sunshine Coast base. “I always think of Eumundi as home – where we’re sitting, I got hit by a car there when I was ten so much history here.” This December, Tobias will be parking his caravan at Woodford. He agrees his music is a beautiful marriage for the festival. “I’ve been there a lot since I was 18 – playing and volunteering but I’ve never played Woodford under my own name before – and it’s reasonably hard to get into the festival now so I’m really stoked to be going.”

{ T H E G R E E N 21 December 2016

Tobias added, “Woodford is great [as it] really celebrates and support art so well - it’s a beautiful environment to be in, I think.” Tobias will be playing four shows at the Woodford Folk Festival – one solo and three with his band. He’ll also be playing at Eumundi’s Imperial Hotel on 8 Jan. youtube.com/watch?v=0LrUVE XHGS8&feature=share.

TEACHING WOODFORD TO SING For the last decade Darren Percival has been leading Woodfordians in resounding song. And, he’s as passionate about his singing workshops now as he was nine years ago. “It’s the chance for strangers to connect,” Darren explained. “One guy told me he’s been in the same job for 45 years but felt more connected to a group of strangers after singing with them for an hour than he ever had at work.” Woodford holds such a strong place in Darren’s heart. It was the festival that brought his young family to live on the Sunshine Coast five years ago. “Both of my babies were in Amanda’s belly at Woodford,” Darren shared, “Every year when we had a day off during the festival and we’d go down to Coolum or Peregian for a swim and just fell in love.

own radio program Up Close & Percival for EON Broadcasters that earned him an ACRA nomination for Best Newcomer On Air Provincial. During Woodford, Darren will be a resident coach for gatherings of the voice and heart at the Singing Place. He loves inspiring Woodfordians, using harmony to change the way they think about their voices and show the power of singing together. “Over the festival the numbers of voices swell to the hundreds – the effect of so many voices singing in unison is incredibly powerful,” he enthused. “Woodford shows you what’s possible in the world and that you can use the gifts you’ve got to spread a little ‘good’ of your own,” Darren shared, “It gets under your skin this place.” woodfordfolkfestival.com

“I’d ask my wife, ‘Is this the year we get to stay?’ and finally she said yes!” Since then the Gold album selling recording artist, gifted musician, radio presenter and vocal coach has been a regular performer on the Coast (and at Noosa Pengari Steiner School festivals) and this year, Darren had his

Books GREEN’S SUMMER READING LIST

As an antidote to the lunacy I keep seeing in our society - as reflected by our local and global politics - I’m heading for the hills and reading On Trails: An Exploration by Robert Moor. Trails help us understand our world: from biological patterns in ant trails, to pathways of information and power. And ultimately trails connect us, rather than divide us. Some hope perhaps! Duncan Sayers, Fire Brigade writer & book reviewer.

In 1629 the ship Batavia was wrecked on the reefs off the WA coast. Most of the ship’s 340 souls survived but a band of mutineers decided to eke out the salvaged food and water rations by slaughtering men, women and children in the most brutal way. Why did it happen? I took a peek and, as expected, FitzSimons’ scholarship and easy, entertaining style clarify the background to this little known disaster.

With the desultory state of world politics and the advent of a Trumpist “post truth” world, I’m looking forward to getting my teeth into a new biog about a great Australian period of political discourse and vision. Over the summer months I’ll be taking on (and those are the right words!) Annie Proulx’s 700 word “environmental epic” Barkskins. Proulx has written so many powerful and memorable books, including The Shipping News and Brokeback Mountain and the subject is so timely, that I decided it was worth the effort. No reading in bed with this one! Judith Pattison, book reviewer.

This summer I’m reading When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. This is a graceful work of non-fiction: reflections on mortality by a trainee neurosurgeon, diagnosed with terminal cancer as a young father. Deeply moving, insightful and lifeaffirming. Jo Deverill, Health writer.

GOMA KIDS ON TOUR Young visitors to Cooroy Butter Factory can experience the hands-on Gabori Sisters: Gathering by the Sea project from Tuesday 3 – Wed 11 January 2017 (closed Monday 9 January), as part of the Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) regional tour. The project invites children to discover the creatures that inhabit the waters around the artists’ homeland of Bentinck Island in Qld’s Gulf of Carpentaria.

Horses are the most magnificent creatures on the planet. They’re so elegant and playful. Could they be the secret to unlocking your mind? Maybe! Riding a horse is so magical. When I’m riding my strong steed I feel like I’m the Queen of the World, Master of the Universe, Ruler of the Galaxy - there is nothing better! I love galloping on the soft, lush green grass. The cold, powerful wind hits my face as I zoom around the big, fat barrels. “Yes!” I scream as I canter across the finish line. A wide grin spreads across my face. I love to zoom above the tall jumps over and over and over again! I clutch tightly onto the reins as my body shivers with delight. Could this possibly be the best feeling in the world? Once I get absolutely exhausted I jump off and pack up all the gear. Sometimes, because I’m so tired I almost forget to feed my horse. I feel a

little nudging nip on my hip and realise I must never forget my precious pony. As you can see horses ABSOLUTELY ROCK MY WORLD!

Have you ever caught a big barrel? Barrels are waves where the bright blue water crashes over your head. Sometimes you feel like you’re going through a tremendous tunnel with the sun gazing through the roof. When you get out of the barrel you feel triumphant, successful and victorious. I love going to Bluey’s Beach in NSW because there are big waves and I love catching 4 foot barrels on my foam blue surfboard. Not only do I like catching waves, but I also like swimming at the beach,

SWIM CLUB NIGHT At a recent Swim Club night, Club President Wendy Walker was delighted to hand over a cheque for $1,077 to Sunshine Butterflies Chairman, Shaun Baker. This represented half of the funds raised by the Swim-athon. It was a great achievement for all the swimmers involved, and a worthy local charity to support. Health THE GIFT OF GIVING

Dr Jo Deverill, Emergency Medicine Specialist

This year I went to my mother-in-law’s 15th birthday party. But before you question my maths, or call the police, I should explain further. It wasn’t all of my mother-in-law that had the birthday. Just a very important bit of her. And perhaps it wasn’t a birthday as such ... more of an anniversary of the start of a second life. Still confused? Okay, I’ll explain more. My mother-in-law is a very impressive woman called Barb. Barb’s mother died when she was in her mid-40s. At the time the exact cause was something of a mystery - something to do with her kidneys - because in those days scans and biopsies and medical specialists were in short supply, especially for a hardworking family from country New South Wales. It wasn’t until Barb was in her early 20s, and heavily pregnant with her second baby, that she herself became gravely unwell with a frightening condition called pre-eclampsia. This is a syndrome of rampant high blood

pressure, a killer for mothers and unborn babies alike. Against the odds both Barb and her baby survived after a heroic caesarean section performed by a country doctor. In the aftermath, the doctors made another very serious diagnosis. Barb had polycystic kidney disease, a hereditary condition that would slowly destroy her kidneys, until they failed. It was now clear that this had been her mother’s fate. Nobody could say how long Barb had until her kidneys packed in, but it would likely be a decade or so, and then it seemed that the only realistic

FIGHTING DIABETES Diabetes causes more deaths each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined, and having diabetes nearly doubles your chance of having a heart attack. Being overweight is a risk factor for developing this disease, but other risk factors such as family history, ethnicity and age also play a role. Unfortunately, too many people disregard the other risk factors for diabetes and think that weight is the only risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Most overweight people never develop type 2 diabetes, and many people with type 2 diabetes are at a normal weight or only moderately overweight. In type 2 diabetes, many people have no symptoms at all, while other signs can go unnoticed being seen as part of “getting older”. Therefore, by the time symptoms are noticed, complications of diabetes may already be present.

treatment would be dialysis. This was still a rarity in the 1980s. And while dialysis is a life-saver, it is a hell of an effort to keep going. As well as being a busy mum, Barb was a primary school teacher in a tough town. Her kidneys failed. But she kept going. And it was indeed a hell of an effort.

match. It was transplanted into Barb in October 2001 and their wonderful new lives began, and continue to this day. Xmas is a time for giving. Life is the ultimate gift. Find out more about organ donation at donatelife.gov.au.

And then, in an act of love, bravery, selflessness - but most of all common sense - Barb’s cousin Jan offered her second kidney. They were a good

The fight against type 2 diabetes is about to be boosted with a major trial of diabetes screening in community pharmacies. The trial will get underway in the next few weeks and will see 363 randomly selected pharmacies across Australia test the effectiveness of different approaches in diabetes detection. Patients will be aged 35-74 years, without diabetes or impaired blood sugar control and will not have been tested for diabetes in the previous 12 months. Minister for Health & Aged Care Sussan Ley said that under the trial, early detection would help determine if someone could develop diabetes within the next five years. The trial involves three alternative models of screening the general population to detect risk, aid diagnosis and enable earlier interventions to prevent diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes usually develops in adults over 45, but is becoming increasingly common earlier and in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, plus those with a family history. The prevalence of diabetes is currently in excess of 4%, and growing quickly. It’s estimated that there are four undiagnosed cases for every five diagnosed cases. According to a recent study published in the journal Diabetes Care, screening for Type 2 diabetes and early treatment could be beneficial specifically by reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease or death. The trial aims to expand programs that seek to improve clinical outcomes for consumers and/or extend the role of pharmacists in the delivery of primary healthcare services through community pharmacy. Living VILLAGE PROJECT LAUNCHED

Louise Formosa speaking to locals at the Our Village launch.

Louise Formosa’s vision for the rundown buildings and land at the top of Memorial Drive is an evocative one: an eco-hub of retail, offices and healing spaces embraced by the community. Essential goods and services like a butcher, grocery store, deli and newsagency on offer, but with an environmentally conscious twist. The dilapidated site - which encompasses Highway Motors, Butter Factory, the old railway corridor, and dwellings on Cook St – lovingly renovated and reinvented nestled amongst native gardens, with children having fun in the creative play areas, people enjoying fresh food and drinks out on the deck, or mingling in the piazza, the sound of a babbling stream and live music filling the village oasis. Louise explained, “When my Dad rang me and suggested we, as a family, looked at purchasing the site, I thought he was joking! “The constraints [are] overwhelming - not to mention the negative history - but I couldn’t shake the idea Dad shared with me.

Cr Rogerson addressing the crowd at the launch.

“What I used to see as an ugly site, I now see as useful foundations to build something beautiful,” she shared. For the last two years as project consultant, Louise has been working closely with Eumundi architect Jolyon Robinson of Robinson Architects and landscape designer James Birrell of Design Lab, to bring her and

her family’s vision to fruition. Jolyon explained he was hooked the moment Louise described the concept to him “I think that it’s commendable - the buildings will serve new purposes to their former incarnations so there will be a familiarity - but also a freshness.” “It’s really about place making - a place that will bring people together,” Jolyon shared. Louise also feels passionately that environmental values are at the heart of this development

and has planned for it to include waste composting, underground water storage and permaculture features. “We are setting some ambitious sustainability targets including operating ‘off the grid’ within ten years as a result of solar energy, and reducing mains water usage by 25% in five years,” she explained. “We’re dedicated to preserving the Eumundi way of life, and catering for local needs while raising the bar in ecotourism.” At the project’s recent community information session on site, the feedback from the 60 plus locals was enthusiastic and positive - though many remain sceptical the development will happen. Considering the community has seen a number of proposals fail to get up on the site over the last six years, it’s understandable. But the Formosa’s remain resolute, and given their track record of developing business sites in town, they actually know what they’re up against. The Formosa family who include - Louis and Janet and their two daughters Jenny and Louise - are the long term owners and operators of Eumundi Parkside and Eumundi Square. At the launch Cr Greg Rogerson also gave his full backing to the Our Village venture and expressed a great enthusiasm in seeing the blocks finally live up to their potential and invigorate the township. Louise enthused, “This town has so much unrealised potential to offer to its community, the region and visitors to our area.”

A Development Application for the Formosa family’s proposed Our Village Eumundi ecodevelopment has been submitted to Sunshine Coast Council and is awaiting approval, along with and an application for operational works for Stage 1, and the Development Application for preliminary approval for Stage 2. The Formosa hope to begin work on the Our Village site in 2017.

Outdoors COMMUNITY GARDEN EDCA’s Community Garden Sub Committee has been working hard all year to raise funds, gather ideas and encourage volunteers to turn our plans for a community garden at the old Scout Hall into reality. After holding a public meeting onsite many months ago, it was obvious that the Eumundi community had a lot of energy and passion for this project and since then, the volunteers have been working hard to deliver. A lot of planning went into the design phase of the garden and the conceptual plan has been with Council now for six weeks as we wait to see if they will give us formal support for the project. We’re hoping to get a decision in the next couple of weeks. Playgroup have been very helpful with the new design which incorporates a new play area for children. The design has also focused on

accessibility to all members of the community of different abilities, interests and priorities. It was important to us that everyone has the opportunity to join in and look after our gardens together whilst meeting new people, or familiar faces whilst creating something beautiful. A number of our wonderful team members such as Anja, Bridget and Brian have become quite frustrated in the “council process” and just want to get their hands in the earth, which is completely understandable. We’ve made some small inroads, such as planting out the citrus orchard, but there is so much more we want to do but aren’t allowed just yet … We are a determined bunch though, and we’re hoping that by this time next year the gardens might actually be built! Bring on 2017… we’re ready!

EUMUNDI RURAL FIRE BRIGADE – T H E Y E A R T H AT WA S Duncan Sayers Your Rural Fire Brigade has had a busy year: structure fires, wildfire, storm damage, and community awareness programs – a bit of everything. We kicked off this fire season with a run of callouts. Fortunately we’ve had some success with recruiting this year. This has been followed up with lots of training. So a long period of rebuilding the brigade over the last couple of years is really paying off. We have been able to respond to 100% of our emergency callouts, on top of a number of hazard reduction burns. Unfortunately we are still being called out to too many planned fires that don’t have a permit. A permit ensures that the planned fire is known when a 000 call comes in to report it. If there’s no permit, it is assumed that the fire is an emergency and brigades respond. We recently had a call to a fire near the Eumundi show grounds. Because the 000 caller correctly gave the location of the fire as near a house, Red Trucks were responded for property protection, plus Eumundi sent two trucks and the Maroochy River Brigade was

EUMUNDI BUSHCARE GROUP Amber Grimley Eumundi Bushcare Group currently has a small number of dedicated volunteers who have met up on the fourth Sunday of the month for two years now. In that period of time we have tackled lots of Fishbone fern, Umbrella Trees, Mickey Mouse Plants, Camphor Laurels and Cocas Palms; had a tree planting; installed wildlife nest boxes; won an Eumundi Australia Day Award; and had our first Bush Kindy Experience. A massive thank you to our regular volunteers: Kim Morris, Gwenda Young, Iris Mulvenney, and also to the Bushland Conservation Management crew who have all helped remove weeds. We will continue our love and dedication of this small but very special piece of Eumundi and hope that we can inspire others to join us. We also hope that we have inspired others to stop and take a look around in their own little piece of the Coast. What natives do you have growing? What about the weeds? And what about the fungi, birds, marsupials and little critters in your yard?

the fourth Sunday of the month, 9.30am to 12pm, always with morning tea provided. I would also like to add that Eumundi Bushcare Group is supported by the Sunshine Coast Council through the Community Nature Conservation Program. This program has over 40 groups on the Sunshine Coast where volunteers can undertake bush restoration, learn new skills, make new friends, stay healthy and connect with nature. In 2017 we plan on having more tree plantings, more family interactive days, more Bush Kindy days, and hopefully some workshops. If you are interested in any of these events or would like to volunteer with us please email amberpusscat@hotmail. com or find us on Facebook: Eumundi Bushcare Group. Have a fabulous native festive season and we’ll see you in the New Year. Happy Growing!

In 2017 we will meet up again on

preparing to send two trucks in support. This is the sort of chain of events a non-permitted fire can trigger. Remember we are volunteers! There is no excuse for not knowing the permit system (Google it). If you have a problem, give the brigade a ring and we’ll try and resolve any issues. Meanwhile, we’re always on the lookout for more volunteers. We’re at the brigade shed on Napier Rd every Tuesday, 7pm. We seem to be attracting our latest batch of recruits from out of area (Doonan, Verrierdale even as far as Perigian and Noosa). Recruiting from inside the town area speeds up response times. As a matter of pride Eumundi, step up to support yourself. 20

N atu re N otes BIRD MIGRANTS In our area spring and early summer is definitely the best time of year for bird-watching. The place is alive with sound and activity. It starts soon after 4am with various males calling and singing to proclaim ownership of their territory, and attract the ladies. First up are usually the tiny and colourful Eastern Striated Pardalotes with their repetitive, “chip chip chip”. They put out a lot of volume for such a small bird. A Kookaburra chorus is next with several families claiming our place as theirs. All that chuckling may be cute but it isn’t funny at four o’clock in the a.m. Now starts a tangled chorus from many of the other resident species. Before breakfast there are also some other matters to sort out: just who is entitled to feed in the nectar laden Calliandra bush? That leads to constant squabbles but in the end the Little Wattle Birds win out, probably because they are larger than most of the other honeyeaters and have a loud throaty call. Parts of that call sound exactly like “Go back, Go back” which led to my visiting mother-in-law accusing me of having trained them in preparation for her stay with us. Some birds are nasty to certain other species which on the face of it doesn’t make sense because they do not compete for nesting territory, food resource, or even a favourite perch. They are just bigger and more aggressive. Magpies at our place hate the placid Barshouldered Doves and we have observed them knocking a dove out of the air. Same with the Currawongs but they hate the Peewees. But the best part of early spring is the return of the migrants. We welcome them because they announce that summer is on its way. They are so vocal and persistent; once they arrive they out-call all of the resident birds. That is something that happens with migratory species: they make up in sound what they lack in numbers. It actually starts so early at night that even the Pardalotes are still asleep. In fact those

Kon Hepers ringing “cooee” calls often go on all night and day. It means the Cuckoo clan has lobbed in. That’s the Koel back down from “up North” which might be tropical northern Australia or Papua New Guinea or even further up into tropical Asia. Close on their tail-feathers, but larger and even more raucous, and thankfully not as persistent at night are the Channel-billed Cuckoos which we have heard described as “mutant Kookaburras”. Not a bad description of the birds but their call cannot be described.

Fan-tailed Cuckoo

It sounds like there are a few footy matches being played on our property with the umpires/referees using those “pea-whistles” and definitely whistle-happy. We know it’s the Fan-tailed Cuckoos, also back from further North but probably only from Far North Queensland. They too have no respect for bed-time and will go on half the night. Has next door’s dog nicked off again? The owner must really want him back judging by his continuous whistling. It’s a double note call, the second note higher than the first. We use the same call for our dog. If the dog can’t hear that, it is either deaf or a mile away. Actually - we know that this is the call of the Shining Bronze Cuckoo. From up in the tall trees comes a very different whistle, a bit like someone practising the scales on a very loud instrument with around ten clear descending notes and 100 decibels. This is the Brush Cuckoo, the third one of our visiting group of small cuckoos. The genus name for some of these smaller cuckoos is Cakomantis which means “Prophet of Doom”. We don’t buy that; we are glad to hear them. Note that none of our Australian cuckoos actually call “cuckoo”. Only the European Common Cuckoo does that and only for about four months of the year when visiting Europe for breeding and never during the eight months it spends in Africa. One theory is that our cuckoos 21

Channel-billed Cuckoo call so much to either entice or frighten other birds to leave their nest, giving the stealthy female cuckoo a chance to sneak in and deposit her one egg. Getting someone else to rear the kids is pretty smart. The practice is called parasitising and all five of the migratory cuckoos use this ploy. Aside from the cuckoo clan, possibly the earliest migratory arrivals is a pair of Forest Kingfishers. They nest in the same termite mound every year and hurl themselves like flashing blue darts at all our other birds, large or small. We’ll be glad when they head North again in March. Not to forget the Spangled Drongos. Four pairs return from wherever they go and get busy squabbling noisily over nest sites, but end up in the same ones every year. Their call is a unique metallic chatter. The very last to arrive is a

{ T H E G R E E N 21 December 2016

pair of Dollar Birds. This species is dependent on tree hollows for breeding. By the time they arrive all the hollows and nest boxes have been claimed and successful breeding is unlikely. That is probably why populations of these birds have very much declined recently and the species is locally endangered. They don’t stay long. Then in early autumn the birdcalls diminish to signal that the exodus has begun. They leave in (about) reverse order. Fortunately our migratory birds don’t know our human ways. They might never come back. If they are hunted in another country, as many are, does that make them refugees? If they came by boat instead of flying in from PNG and the islands, would we try to stop them, turn them back or keep them in cages?
