Notes Editor’s note ... The heat has been stifling in the hinterland of late with little reprieve at night. It’s a full time endeavour just to find a cool-ish spot. Lying flat on the cool concrete under the house works – as does immersing oneself in water – but some prefer to crank up the air con 24-7. Hey, at least we haven’t been threatened by a fire at the door recently – unlike our Coolum neighbours. The local volunteer fire brigades answered the call and went to join the four day fight (see page 15). It’s a kick up the bum to remember to have a home fire plan - and a reminder to check on our older neighbours who might be sealed up in their heat box of a house. The Eumundi Brigade were amongst the wonderful locals celebrated at the recent Eumundi Australia Day Awards (see page 7). The Green is very lucky to claim many of the nominees amongst our regular contributors.

Wegner Bridge It really was terrific that my wife Lesley and I were invited to join an impromptu bridge gathering of residents at North Arm celebrating Australia Day and the new bridge upgrade. I, along with the immediate community, are very keen to see the bridge named the ‘Bill Davison Bridge’ in light of the incredible community spirit displayed by Bill and his family over a lifetime of farming and living in North Arm. Community Forum This month it was my pleasure to host the Sunshine Coast Councillor’s Divisional forum in Div 10. The majority of Eumundi community organisations were represented. They engaged in robust discussions and delivered passionate local points of view. Some of the issues raised included a streetscape upgrade for Eumundi, two pedestrian crossings in Memorial Dr, bus shelters in Napier Rd and Dick Caplick Park Dr, plus amenity issues at the entrances into the town. The standing of Eumundi as arguably our greatest tourist attraction and a major drawcard for the Coast was also a hot topic of discussion! Dick Caplick Park I am only too well aware that

there is a slide and a BBQ still to be reinstalled at Dick Caplick Park as part of Stage II of the upgrade to the park. I’m working painstakingly hard to progress this as fast as I possibly can. Market Terraces The lease documents with ECCO as the principal entity have been signed for Eumundi Market Terraces upgrade and the tender documents are now out for expressions of interest. I thank everybody concerned for their patient deliberations over the last five years. I’m looking forward to giving Eumundi the legitimate credentials to make the statement that the town is indeed a jewel in the Sunshine Coast crown! Australia Day Awards I’ve always said you can get accolades from the Prime Minister, but it pales into insignificance compared to receiving acknowledgements from your local community. So to everyone who received awards, or were nominated in the Eumundi Australia Day Awards, my heart felt congratulations and thanks for your community passion, commitment, pride and work done on behalf of your fellow residents.

COUNCIL COMES TO TOWN Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher, Experience Eumundi GM, Eumundi Each month, Sunshine Coast councilors conduct a Divisional Forum Session aimed at giving communities across the region a chance to meet all councillors face to face and discuss concerns and aspirations specific to their locality. Last Wednesday the forum was hosted at Eumundi’s Imperial Hotel and highlighted an array of community desires including pedestrian crossing access on Memorial Dr, combined with a long awaited streetscape plan. Div. 10 Cr Greg Rogerson explained, “I view the importance of the forums paramount, as they enable my fellow councilors to deem the

{ T H E G R E E N 8 February 2017

true worth of particular projects from personal community based perspectives, rather than having to rely wholly on the often parochial plea of the representative councilor.” “The Forums allow the passion of the community to be ‘run’ past all councillors and gives them a certain amount of personal engagement with community members, outside their immediate environment.” It was also an opportunity for Council to witness a united Eumundi group of organisations in attendance - looking to the very best for Eumundi - now and into the future.

Community R E WA R D I N G S TA N D O U T HINTERLAND LOCALS Every year the Eumundi Historical Association rewards the efforts of some of our selfless locals - nominated by their community - who make our hinterland a better place. It’s an opportunity to come together, meet other wonderful locals and celebrate our hinterland home. Thump, thump, thump, go Windy’s hooves as we trot through the round yard. Windy is the wonderful horse I usually ride at lessons. Every Sunday it’s the same: wake up - little bit excited; get ready - quite excited; go - very, very excited! I love horse riding like you love chocolate cake! When I do horse riding I feel fabulous. It is so fun because you learn new things every time you go. You get to trot, walk and groom the horses. My teacher’s name is Corrine, she is very good at riding. I also have ridden a horse called Coda and he is Corrine’s horse. I do horse riding at Corrine’s new house. It is sooooooo much fun. Would you like to do horse riding?

“Wake up sleepy head!” I yelled at my tired, 15 year old brother Lachy. “It’s my birthday!” He said that he heard an annoying little sister yelling at him on her birthday. I love my family. “Is everyone awake?” asked my lovely dad. I ran into my room and got the wish list for my birthday presents. I said that I wanted to have a roll call. I shouted everyone’s names, “Ellie and Lauren!” I called. They shouted at me that they were the first ones awake. “Mum and Dad are making the cake,” said Lachy. I am so excited about my birthday. Happy hugs - Hugging My Family is my favourite book. My mum said that she wrote the book. I went to my favourite page, the feelings page. Mum

read it to me. The feelings every big family has are happy, loved and fun. What to do today I thought? Maybe swimming or even open presents. Maybe we can bake a cake together. I will draw a picture with my family. I love being with my family!

Coralie Kedzlie, RDA operations manager, North Arm

Twenty of the Sunshine Coast RDA horses spent their summer at their country retreat - Laurie’s Farm, at Verrierdale. At the farm they’ve entertained children who attended the day camps and taken many of the volunteers on trailrides, but they’ve mostly enjoyed frolicking over the hills and just being horses.

paddocks during their absence. Horse floats going to and fro This week volunteer training will from Laurie’s Farm to the Centre take place, and participants will at Monak Rd. be able to sign up for the various programs. RDA would like to thank the community and all the volunteers for their wonderful support. This organisation would not be able to operate without them all.

However, they all know that very soon it will be time to saddle up for the serious business (which is actually a lot of fun) of providing riding and carriage driving programs for those in our community who experience disability. Last week the floats and volunteers arrived at Laurie’s Farm to load them up for the journey back to the RDA Centre in North Arm. A handful of horses have stayed in Verrierdale to provide Equine Assisted Learning programs at this picturesque venue.

So often in the last month I have been standing in the shopping line, or chatting to friends, or trying to talk to my son about what he wants for dinner, and all I hear is ”it’s too hot to eat - it’s too hot to cook”. We seem to be experiencing a mighty heatwave and we still have a fair bit of summer to come, so I am always looking for ways to keep nourishing my body without having to expend too much energy. So here is a twist on the old potato salad; delicious, healthy, quick and easy to make and without long periods over a hot stove! Enjoy this salad on its own with some nice crusty bread or with barbeque meat or vegetables. We can get through this summer - we can! Ingredients

Method

• 1 kg potatoes

Firstly peel and chop potatoes into large bite sized pieces.

• 2 tblsp parsley almond pesto • 1 tblsp capers, roughly chopped • 1 lemon, rind and a little juice • 50 g spinach • 1 bunch asparagus, cut into small inch long pieces and lightly steamed • ½ red onion, thinly sliced • Handful slivered almonds • Salt and pepper

Place in cold water and bring to the boil. Gently simmer until just soft (you don’t want to overcook or potatoes will be mush - undercook it’ll be crunchy). Drain and set aside to cool. Prepare other ingredients. Once potatoes are cool fold pesto through. Amount can vary; if you have young children who don’t like “green bits” just add a small amount to get them used to it. I put in lots over mine as it adds lots of flavour.

Fold through capers, lemon rind, blanched asparagus, red onion and spinach leaves, generously season with salt and pepper and top with a handful of slivered almonds. Note: if asparagus is out of season it can be horribly expensive and some kids don’t like it, so you can substitute with green beans. However there is something delicious and decadent about fresh, still crispy asparagus spears.

Any pesto will work, but I have used a Sicilian parsley and almond pesto for a perfect flavour combo.

Hertiage EUMUNDI TELEPHONE EXCHANGE Wendy Birrell, DE manager, Eumundi The first manual exchange was in the Eumundi Post Office built in 1918, near where the CWA hall now stands, and was a handy location to wheel mail across from the railway station nearby. In 1913 there were only two subscribers in Eumundi – AE Cook and G Etheridge’s sawmill, and by 1920 there were 10 - almost all were businesses. Considered one of the significant items in Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre (DE), the second Eumundi Telephone Exchange which was housed in the current Eumundi Post Office, had an important role for Eumundi communications from 1938 to 1977 and both men and women operated it. Men operated the night shift and there was a single bed where they slept between connecting or taking calls. Up until the late 60’s women had to leave the public service - which included working on the telephone exchange - if they married, although married women could apparently work part time and did so in the Eumundi Exchange as ‘fill-ins’. By 1975, two years before the manual exchange closed, there were 135 subscribers. On 1 July 1975 the Postmaster-

The second Eumundi Telephone Exchange on display in DE.

General’s Department (PMG) was abolished and two commissions were created – Australia Post and Telecom, which was in charge of all telephone exchanges, although some remained a while longer in Post Office buildings - like Eumundi’s did. On 31 May 1977 the Telephone Exchange stopped operation. Telephone numbers became automated and the manual numbers and party lines ceased to exist. At the time there were around 170 subscribers. More research is being done on this important part of Eumundi’s past at DE and the Centre is looking to collect memories, more information, photos or documents. We’re also keen to interview people who operated the exchange, or who had a telephone for home or business. If you can assist in upgrading this important display upgraded with audio memories, please contact DE. 5442 8762 or email info@ discovereumundi.com.

Outdoors VOLUNTEER BRIGADES COME TOGETHER TO SAVE COOLUM Some say the recent fire in Coolum was the biggest on the Sunshine Coast for a decade. We peaked at over 50 firefighting appliances in action on the fire ground at any one time and sustained firefighting efforts for four days. Three helicopters and two fixed wing aircraft were used for water bombing and fire spotting. Urban and Rural fire brigades were joined by Parks and Wildlife, police, ambulance, SES, Surf Lifesaving, businesses and community groups such as Lions in a fantastic display of community resilience. Around 900 ha of bush land was burnt adjacent to housing, industrial developments and infrastructure and not a single property was lost. Critically, no lives were lost, and apart from a few bumps and scrapes there were no serious injuries. And to top it off, the environmental damage was contained – no doubt the flush of rain we had at the end of the event will bring about much needed renewal. In the follow up, rescue groups

were heading into the burnt area to assist injured wildlife. An incredible effort! None of this would have been possible without volunteers. Without the surge-capacity of being able to call on such a large number of people – up to around 170 people each day - in a variety of roles, for four days of rolling shifts over 24 hours, the community would have been at significant risk. In addition, the environmental damage would have been far greater if the fire wasn’t contained and had spread over a greater area. I’m always banging-on to anyone within earshot, or who read the Green, that we need more volunteers. I’m not making this stuff up. This recent event has demonstrated that it is volunteers that hold our community together, particularly in times of crisis. But such crises stretch our resources, and exhaust the relative few that do stick their hand up. Identify what you care about and help – it doesn’t happen by magic. Join your local SES, volunteer

Duncan Sayers, Eumundi

at our Surf Clubs, raise money via Rotary, come and feed the troops with the Lions Club, wildlife rescue always need a hand, or, of course, join your local fire brigade. There are a number of brigades you can join in our region depending on your proximity (Google it). But it goes without saying that the Award-Winning, Eumundi fire fighters are the funniest and best looking of the lot. So, if you want more information, you’d be well placed to visit us on any Tuesday evening at 7pm in our shed on Napier Road Eumundi right next to the markets.

P R E PA R I N G Y O U R H O M E F O R B U S H F I R E S E A S O N Preparation for bushfire season should be a year-round task, but here are some tips to help make preparations to protect your home and family. If you do live in a bushfire zone, organise a bushfire plan with your family and make sure everyone knows what it is, where they need to go if they get separated and what items they can grab quickly if they are forced to evacuate. If families take the time to make the necessary preparations they will have a better chance to keep their home and family safe this bushfire season.

1. Trees and plants provide fire fuel. Remove build-up of dead branches, bark or shrubs. 2. When planting a garden, plant trees away from the house so limbs and branches don’t hang over your roof and drop leaves in gutters. These ignite quickly. 3. Clean leaves from your roof, gutters and downpipes. 4. Remove all flammable material that’s within 20 metres of your property, including flammable liquids and newspapers or cardboard that you have stockpiled for recycling. 15

No-one wants to be impacted by a bushfire. Often there is nothing that can be done to stop damage, but if you follow the preceding tips you will have at least given your place every chance of surviving if a bushfire is in your area.

• Portable battery radios to listen to news updates.

There are also a number of items that can help in a bushfire situation:

• A quality high-pressure firefighting pump to help with small spot fires and to water your garden/foliage on your property in preparation.

• Purchase a small power generator. During a bushfire, power and water may be cut off and this often happens in advance.

{ T H E G R E E N 8 February 2017

• Good quality torches and long life batteries are imperative. • Packed bag with fresh clothes which can be carried easily.

than most of us and not focused on the stresses of everyday life that we face.

In the company of animals If you have a pet, or had a pet in the past, you may remember a time when you felt down in the dumps and your pet was by your side. Did it seem like your pet knew what you were going through? Domesticated animals have an amazing calming effect on us humans, as well as the ability to sense emotions. They are more connected to nature

Being in an animal’s presence can calm and soothe your nerves, relieve feelings of sadness and increase levels of dopamine (a hormone linked to happiness and wellbeing). In hospitals and therapy clinics, animals have been shown to help with anxiety, depression, mental illness and autism. They are also proving successful in aged care facilities helping with decreasing loneliness and increasing mobility. When animals are used for therapeutic medical purposes it is called Animal-Assisted Therapy or PetTherapy. Whether it is a fluffy cat or a feathered friend, they can put a smile on our dial and bring out the best in us. I have visited corporate offices with my farm animals for some fun therapy. The change in the office vibe, once the staff see animals, is dramatic and rewarding. Cont’d on pg 18

Kim Morris, Bushland Conservation Management, Eumundi Attracting wildlife to your garden can be fascinating and bring so much joy. Planting hardy native species that grow in your area endemically will provide shelter and nutrition for local wildlife. Native grasses when left to seed, provide food for small birds such as finches, and native marsupials. Flowering shrubs of different foliage, such as spiky leaves, create a safe haven for smaller birds to flit in out of and feel secure. Nectar feeding birds love Grevilleas, Callistemon and Melaleuca species and so will any gliders and possums.

exotics that can be toxic to pets and wildlife and become a part of an urban wildlife corridor! Laying a couple of logs, stick piles or rocks and mulch all act as habitat and a safe haven for reptiles, frogs and small marsupials. Habitat loss has seen bushland lose many hollow dwellings in old trees, so supplying wildlife nest boxes can help restore balance.

Lilly Pillys are a common, easily sourced native garden plant, but they are so loved by wildlife, providing food from the leaves, flowers and fruit as well as creating habitat with their dense foliage. If you have the space, try some local wattles and Eucalypt species too. Remove invasive

Keep with your New Year tness resolution About four years ago we had an incredibly dry and hot spring ending up with a cyclone and terrible weather in January. Many people will remember the event.

reaction and once the button is pushed it’s very hard to stop. I understand this myself as I also have a response when a bowl of corn chips is put in front of me!

Well, during that time we took pity on a medium sized monitor lizard that lived in our area as she appeared to be doing it tough and becoming emaciated. I started giving her a few chicken necks as a suitable food supplement and ended up calling her Dora. She was never aggressive and only ever stayed out on the lawn and would soon scuttle off if we approached her.

Lace monitors such as these are real scavengers and will take food i.e. meat - either dead or alive, so a bite from one could lead to a nasty infection. I wouldn’t like to be scratched by their claws either! Occasionally people feed left-overs to these lizards at picnic spots and monitors have chased children and grown-ups alike and it can be a very scary and life changing encounter.

However, last year Dora was joined by another much larger lizard and soon the situation was somewhat out of control as the other monitor would rush onto our back patio whenever it saw us in the yard or heard our screen door click and on several occasions I had to protect myself with a broom or rake to make good my escape.

Fortunately I haven’t seen either of the monitors since the arrival of spring and in the event one does turn up, I definitely will NOT be feeding it. Every animal has a place in our environment but these lizards need to be respected and I would NOT encourage these lizards by feeding them.

If I was inside the house it would climb up our fly screen. A neighbour also had an alarming situation when a large monitor rushed her as she was on her way to the clothes line. Luckily she had the clothes basket with her and was able to shoo it off. I think monitors (also sharks and crocodiles) have an inbuilt food response brain

Footnote: A large monitor lizard was recently seen by our neighbours raiding a brush turkey nest in their yard. The male turkey soon showed up and after quite a commotion the monitor withdrew. Please slow down and watch out for wildlife on the roads. Please keep those birdbaths clean and filled during these hot, dry times.

Letters Cont’d from pg 16 Tough men turn into gentle giants and women get the return of their childhood giggles. As well as being a team building exercise it can also increase work productivity for the remainder of the day. After a hard day at work, patting a dog, riding a horse, feeding the chickens or smiling at a goldfish can take your mind off work matters. Your mind shifts to a more relaxed state reasonably quickly and prepares you for your home life. It is not uncommon to find me sitting in my paddock, alone, surrounded by goats and sheep after a long working day. I have a very strong bond with all of

my farm animals, as I have raised them from orphaned babies, and they see me as their mother or master. They all have names and respond to them. Most will have a turn at coming to me for a pat and cuddle and then many will lie down next to me (or tap me to make sure I am still alive!). This is my form of relaxation and I love it!

LITT ERE D WHI TEG OOD S As a long term resident of Eumundi Range Road, my husband and I were very upset to see the lookout littered with White Goods, ie Large Fridge and Washing Machine. Also thrown on the ground was what looked like frames with steel springs. The Rubbish Bin had also been sprayed with black paint.

If you don’t have animals at home you can still connect with animals in nature. Sitting outside and watching the wild birds go about their evening routine can be as relaxing as stroking a cat. allanimaltherapy.com.au

I understand that this may not be able to be mentioned in this edition but perhaps the next in the issue it could be. We all take care and pride in our homes in the area and it saddens me to see people treating it with disrespect. Regards, Margaret Scott, Eumundi.

Cont’d from pg 8 After lunch the Rural Fire Brigade gave the kids a chance to cool off. The highlight was the annual cane toad races. 15 heats, semis and a final eventually saw Ross Ehrenburg crowned the proud owner of the winner! The ‘toad buster’ kids did a great job in keeping the livestock under control. Cr Stephen Robinson was on hand to acknowledge the newly completed Verrierdale Hall entrance and safe pathway from the carpark, which was made possible with a SCRC major grant and funds raised by the VCG.

This handsome bird has taken up residence on our property on Eumundi Range Rd waking us and the dog in the early hours. The owner could contact me on 0408 702 324 or Michael on 0488 727 826. Thanks, Alison, Eumundi
