Notes Editor’s note ... The last week has been overflowing with community spirit. The local ANZAC ceremonies at Verrierdale and Eumundi were incredibly moving and a credit to the community group volunteers who organise them every year.

A HINTERLAND MOMENT

Australia’s largest sustainable farm input company is right here on your doorstep!

It is with sadness that we say goodbye to one of the Green’s longest standing volunteer writers this issue due to health and family issues. Helen Hepburn has been a champion for our native flora and fauna and has played a huge part in making the Green ‘green.’ Thanks Helen for being an intrinsic part of the Green team. I’ll miss your contributions very much.

Delightful surprises also await those many visitors who arrive here each day, with the Meet, Make, Share Friday animation drawing a great following. And, of course, every Wednesday and Friday Eumundi also hosts its world famous artisan markets... and about our markets, we have some very good news from our recent Visitor Survey and Eumundi Markets traffic count. Here are some exciting headline numbers. (A fully annotated breakdown will be posted on www.expereinceeumundi.com.au shortly).

It’s very clear that the Eumundi Markets are robust and well loved… with a third of visitors “first timers” who are sure to spread that love. Yes, we are a town powered by our beloved markets that helps support all that other very great stuff that makes living here such a joy...

Who would have thought that this remarkable artisan market could have grown from such humble beginnings back in 1979 - when just three marketeers gamely set up their stalls around the CWA hall. Doonan Bridge Road Work on the upgrade to Doonan Bridge Rd is continuing, with construction being done in a staged approach. The section at the northern end, near Verrierdale Rd, is about 40% complete. Council is undertaking service relocations for a 900m section from Arcoona Rd, with further work due to start in July or August once land acquisitions are finalised. We are also waiting for land acquisitions to be finalised for the southern end. Thanks for your patience during the necessary road closure. Valdora Road Council is also working to upgrade Valdora Rd. This project includes rehabilitation, widening and sealing a 450m narrow section of the road, south of Celestial Court. The sealed road will consist of two 3m wide road lanes with 1m sealed shoulders on both sides of the road, significantly improving safety for motorists. Work is scheduled to be completed at the end of May. Solar farm update Construction of the solar farm at Valdora is progressing well, with approximately 98% of piles and panels now installed and the project well on track to be completed in the middle of this year. There will be more than 15,000 piles and more than 57,000 solar panels in total installed. As a point of interest, sheep and goats will be located on site to keep the grass short. When this 15 megawatt (MV) solar farm is complete, Sunshine Coast Council will become Australia’s first local government to offset 100% of its electricity consumption

from clean energy across all its facilities and operations.

Valdora solar farm New viewing areas at Mt Ninderry Mt Ninderry’s new viewing areas are not far from completion. I went along to watch a helicopter lift materials earlier in the construction phase, which was certainly something different to see. If you’ve climbed Mt Ninderry I’m sure you can appreciate why these platforms and equipment could not be carried up! I encourage you to hike to the top when work is finished for stunning views out to the Blackall Range, north to Lake Weyba and across Mt Coolum to Mooloolaba. New turnaround area Council recently completed a turnaround area on Verrierdale Forest Rd, at the entry to the Eumundi Conservation Park. This upgrade formalises the turnaround area and provides increased parking and manoeuvrability for large, long vehicles such as those towing horse floats. This came in well under budget, mainly due to the use of recycled materials.

S A F E R FA M I L I E S E V E N T Local not-for profit United Synergies is inviting Sunshine Coast locals to its ‘Take A Stand Together For Safer Families’ event on Saturday 6 May at Noosaville Lions Park, from 10am - 2pm. This free event, with workshops and live music, aims to educate and support people affected by domestic violence, and give families an opportunity to celebrate what a ‘safe family’ means. Domestic abuse impacts 1 in 3 women nationally and the Sunshine Coast region sits high in Queensland for reported incidents. The Sunshine Coast Vulnerable Persons Unit reported recently there were 56 domestic violence incidents in the Sunshine Coast district alone between Good Friday and Easter Monday this year. United Synergies’ CEO, Christopher John said that an important step in changing the prevalence of domestic and family violence is to create opportunities for safe conversations to take place that challenge the culture and attitudes that underpin violence.

{ T H E G R E E N 3 May 2017

“The event brings a range of community support services together with fun and family friendly activities encouraging conversations about healthy and unhealthy relationships in a safe and open environment.” “We also understand that attending an event is not for everyone but we hope that the event will prompt people to seek the resources they need, or speak out if they know someone who needs support,” he explained. On the day event goers will be able to join in: • One Million Stars to End Violence – and weave their own star as part of a global weaving project that we can all be part of to help end all forms of violence. • Rock and Water youth friendly workshop – to help manage emotions • Didgeridoo Wood Workshop – for men and boy’s only • Drumbeat music workshop • Live music – with The Floating Bridges, The Dennis Sisters and Doolie Shadforth facebook.com/UnitedSynergies

Community VERRIERDALE DAWN SERVICE The dawn ANZAC Day service saw the close community of Verrierdale congregate at the village hall for a moving and evocative ceremony, with the Noosa Chorale and the sound of bagpipes playing as the sun rose. After the service, locals lined up for the traditional sit down gunfire breakfast, which saw neighbours and strangers come together to share stories especially those behind the medals pinned to chests. The crossgenerational crowd continues to build here every year. More photos on pg 18

Community THE BOY IN THE PHOTOGRAPH 1910. In his black velvet knickerbockers suit he stood to attention and stared at someone beyond reach. Sweet innocence frozen in the moment during that wonderful period of child discovery, of knowledge absorbed and blinking eyes became accustomed to the bright sun well before corruption soured the mind. The crystal ball is blank and the rolled dice could not explain to a child’s bewildered mind the second war to end all wars. The roaring twenties short lived to be swallowed by poverty and rigors of The Great Depression their courage tested, and Time hurled him into the dark days of ‘42 with the intrepid AIF. The child with the chubby face, long curls and soft eyes would slog as sergeant, shoot prisoners because they were an excess to the wounded down through the jungle, rain, malarial mud and dysentery of New Guinea, and Tarakan, where the barge next to his copped a direct hit like the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan. Fierce as flame the sensitive mind would be cursed with guilt, war neurosis and alcoholism. And in the twilight time the crystal ball would have him collapse dramatically in the L.A. airport. Such are the joys and tragedies of life: may the child in the photograph rest in peace.

E U M U N D I ’ S A N Z A C D AY MEMORIAL SERVICE This year’s ANZAC Day Memorial Service in Eumundi was a great show of community spirit. Bob Ward gave a moving welcome, followed by The Hon Glen Elmes, MP Member for Noosa. Charlie Nelson then played a touching acoustic rendition of “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda” on the back of a ute to a riveted crowd. Returned service men and women then marched, supported by families, Cr Steve Robinson, community groups, pipe band, vintage military vehicles and school groups. The community then congregated in front of the town’s heritage post office as the Doo Wop Dolls performed Some Gave All, before the old bell tolled for the 27 local men who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. The large group then reconvened at Eumundi’s Amphitheatre to hear a poignant speech from Air Marshal Geoff Shepherd AO (Rtd), along with the Ode recited by Colonel Greg Molyneux, CSC (Rtd). Then followed The Last Post, one minutes silence to remember the fallen, and Reveille (trumpet played by Ian Denovan). The community then mingled under the trees and enjoyed ANZAC biscuits, rum and milk, and breakfast rolls courtesy of Eumundi Rotary. More photos on pg 18 and in the next issue of the Green....

Autumn Light

IN THE HINTERLAND

Delicate Love Flowers are flourishing around our yard after ex-TC Debbie’s big rains. Shanna Bignell, Belli Park. A curious Green Tree Snake visited our deck on a warm autumn day – enjoying a last hurrah before bunkering down for winter. I actually photograph a lot of snakes – my husband is a snake catcher and we’ve been caring for sick/injured reptiles for over a decade, so I get to eyeball them more frequently than the average punter and I’ve become quite comfortable getting up close and personal with them. Shanna Bignell, Belli Park.

Autumn mushrooms are abundant and popping up everywhere - especially with the lovely rain we have had recently. Annie Owens, Tinbeerwah.

Books LET’S BEE FRIENDS

Judith Pattison, Doonan

Renowned entomologist and author of award-winning The Australian Native Bee Book, Tim Heard is coming to Eumundi on Fri 19 May, School of Arts, 6.30pm, for a live panel discussion about keeping bees and a future without them. Joining Tim will be native bee expert Tobias Smith and local beekeeper and crop consultant, Chris Fuller, to discuss: global crop pollination; the two types of native bees - solitary and social bees; and introduce a working hive. $20 or $15 Concession.

This has been a particularly busy year for insects at our place. The long dry period, followed by remnants of Cyclone Debbie, brought out a plague of the bitey kind. Invisible little busy bodies invaded our house looking for fresh blood. We tried every possible repellent and antiitch remedy. So amusing to our native Australian friends of the human variety! At the same time, I noticed some long standing little creatures busily making homes in the cane furniture on the porch. I had assumed these were native stingless bees. But a quick reference to Tim Heard’s The Australian Native Bee Book showed they were probably little wasps. Fascinating to watch at any rate, and it turns out they are pollinators too. I seem to have come late to the Australian native bee fascination, but I’m beginning to understand what makes them so popular. I bought the book after an interview with Tim Heard I saw on the ABC. Although there are many proponents of Australian native bees, many of whom are referenced in this comprehensive book, Tim is the rock star of the Australian native bee world. He is an entomologist with a long professional and personal interest/obsession with the little creatures. It’s easy to see why The Australian Native Bee Book won a

Tickets available at Berkelouw Bookstore.

Whitley Award for Australian Zoological Literature in 2016. The book expertly manages the difficult job of appealing to a wider audience with a general interest in environmental issues such as pollination and food security and not much knowledge of bees, whether native stingless (meliponini) or honey bees (apini), while providing practical and detailed information for hive owners. ‘Part one: Understanding bees’, provides an overview of bee biology, evolution, etc.; ‘Part two: Keeping Stingless hives’, gives all the practical information anyone

would require and ‘Part three: Bees for pollination’, describes exactly that. The book is packed with easily accessible and fascinating information. The overall layout and beautiful illustrations are perfect, beginning with the foldout front cover which announces, “Let the learning begin”. Whether you live in a neighbourhood or on acreage, The Australian Native Bee Book should be part of your home library.

Kids ESS ANZAC MEMORIAL This year Eumundi State School held its ANZAC Memorial Service at the School Hall instead of under the tree canopy in town. Eumundi’s Bob Ward officiated and Colonel Greg Molyneux, CSC (Ret) spoke to the children of the ANZAC Spirit that continues to inspire and shape our nation’s sensibilities and ethos. He shared his belief the ANZAC attributes that should continue to inspire are: courage, tenacity, mateship, pride in country and humour.

Greg shared the yearly commemoration is important to him personally because he’s proud of his military service; it gives him an opportunity to remember those that served and an occasion to celebrate the ANZAC attributes as part of daily life. Two representatives from each class laid a wreath in front of a cross and flag, and the school choir made the service all the more moving.

Sport EUMUNDI SWIM CHAMPIONS Proof that Eumundi “punches well above its weight” was provided last week at the National Age Championships. This year the venue was the Chandler Aquatic Centre in Brisbane, but Eumundi was again represented by Troy Carlson and Kaitlyn Walker. These two dedicated, unassuming and outstanding athletes represented themselves, their families and the Eumundi Swim Club with pride. Their efforts moved Eumundi to 63rd in the National Rankings! Congratulations to coach Adrian Williams, whose support, ethos and expertise is clearly bearing fruit for the whole club. We are privileged to have him guiding 14year old Troy who excelled and earned Silver Medals in the 100m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle, and made the final in the 200m Butterfly as well as swimming in the 100m and 200m Freestyle events.

Alasdair Scott, Eumundi

Qualifying for the Nationals is an achievement in itself, and Kaitlyn showed courage to overcome her hampered preparations to finish 15th overall in her 100m butterfly. Both swimmers deserve huge plaudits for the way they conducted themselves at training and carnivals, encouraging and motivating all the younger swimmers around them. Queensland showed its strength accumulating 829 points, with their nearest rival Victoria having 219 points. This highlights that the Queensland State Championships are the most competitive in Australia. So, Eumundi with a dozen State level swimmers, and a number of younger swimmers

on the way through is right up there. Last year Adrian developed a link between Eumundi and the Cheltenham Club in Melbourne, with some of their squad visiting for a training camp last winter. Some of the swimmers were re-acquainted at Chandler, and plans are afoot for a group from Eumundi to travel to Cheltenham this year. It is just this sort of connection which makes swimming at Eumundi a little bit special. The National Age Championships brought the swim season 2016/17 to a close. For Troy, Kaitlyn and Adrian, what a way to finish! Way to go Eumundi!

After constant rescheduling, Eumundi State School’s annual, compulsory Cross Country was finally held with the kids riled up for running action. Principle Mick Connors was impressed that all children were willing to give a go and earn points for their school sport’s house. Cedar house claimed a surprise victory this year stealing glory from Banksia house after many years at the top ranking. Troy Carlson (far left) at the National Age Championships.

RUGBY’S A GIRLS GAME The Eumundi Dragons are entering an exciting era of Rugby 7’s girl’s rugby. The recent Gold medal victory of the Australian women’s rugby team at the Rio Olympic has Rugby 7’s as the hot new sport for girls and young women across the country. The Eumundi Dragons want to be part of this movement! As a kid, Rugby was not available for girls in schools or at club level, so my passion was for touch football. I was really delighted to hear that several of the Gold medal winning Australian women’s rugby players were also Australian touch football representatives. It was pleasing to see that

Kim Thompson Coach Girls 7’s, Eumundi

those athletic talents can be transferred over to Women’s Rugby - which is now played at a worldwide level opening up so many amazing opportunities like going to the Olympics! My 10 year old daughter competed in her first rugby carnival last year through a school carnival on the Sunshine Coast and she loved it. She thoroughly enjoy the comradery, teamwork and using her individual skills to contribute to a team. She learned many new skills and her confidence and self-belief just went from strength to strength. With some great coaching, she felt really proud that she could do a sport that was (previously) 13

just meant for boys. I would encourage girls to have a go and try something empowering and new. You can make some great new friends and you never know where your talents lie and what opportunities can come out of it. You might even get to go to the Olympics one day! The Eumundi Dragons are working towards having an U12’s and U14’s girl’s teams in this season’s Sunshine Coast competition. If your daughter is looking for a sport with excitement, skill and team work, then come down to the Eumundi Showgrounds this Thursday from 4pm, or contact me for more information on 0403 292 842.

Eat

Poached seafood with lemongrass, coconut, turmeric and thai basil Annette Fear, Doonan I love this recipe. Why? It’s full of delicious seafood which is one of my favourite things to eat. It showcases local seafood which we have in abundance and most of us can grow the aromatics in the recipes. You can’t kill lemongrass, turmeric, kaffir lime leaves and galangal with an axe - and if the possums (damn them) don’t get my chilli I always have loads of them on hand too. It’s a delicious, fragrant soup that’s rich and creamy – perfect for autumn in the hinterland. Ingredients

• 2 tblsp fresh lime juice

• 250 g white fish fillets

• 1/3 cup Thai basil leaves

• 4 large green prawns, peeled & deveined

Method

• 200 g squid or cuttlefish, cleaned & scored • 2 garlic cloves • 2 tblsp coriander root, washed • ½ tsp white peppercorns • 2 tblsp fresh turmeric, finely chopped or 1 tsp powder • 1 small hot chilli, chopped with seeds • 1 tblsp veg oil • 500 ml coconut milk • 1-2 tblsp fish sauce • 2 tblsp palm sugar • 2 lemongrass stalks, sliced • 5 pieces galangal, thinly sliced • 2 long red chillies, split & seeds removed • 4 kaffir lime leaves

Cut fish into large bite-sized pieces. Cut prawns in half horizontally and cut squid into large, bite-sized triangles. Set aside. Crush garlic, coriander root, peppercorns, turmeric and chilli in a mortar and pestle to make a smooth paste. Heat oil to low in a wok and fry paste for about 10 secs. Add coconut milk, fish sauce, palm sugar, lemongrass, galangal, chilli and lime leaves. Increase heat and bring to the boil. Add all seafood. Simmer gently for about four minutes, stirring a little if needed. When seafood is just cooked, add lime juice. Check for seasoning and stir in Thai basil before serving.

Annette Fear is the head cooking school chef at Spirit House in Yandina, along with co-owner and founder Helen Brierty. Their latest cookbook Spirit House Cookbook has just been released nationally.

N AT U R A L V S C O M M E R C I A L F E E D F O R D O G S A N D C AT S : PA R T 1 Walk into a supermarket animal feed aisle or visit a vet surgery and see the mountains of tinned and dry feed for animals. It is hugely popular when feeding our furry friends and it is what has been drummed into us as the right, balanced diet for our dogs and cats. However, there are many questions that arise when we consider these unnatural feeds. Dogs are basically like wolves and have evolved into our domestic environment. If we look back at their wild diet, they were eating small animals like rats, birds and feasting on carcasses that were already dead. They gnawed on bones and even consumed some vegetable matter that was in the stomach of other animals. The commercial feed most of us use nowadays has some positives but it also has negatives that we all should consider if we want what is best for our pets. Firstly, the commercial feed fits into one of these categories; dry or processed and in a tin/roll or similar. Secondly, these feeds can last a long time on the shelf so what preservatives are we feeding? Thirdly, it is

so processed that the dogs and cats do not get to chew off a bone and this has consequences. Commercial feed is a quick, easy and what appears to be an affordable solution for us busy folk, but is it the best solution and is it really cheaper in the long run?

or underweight and seek advice from a qualified Animal Nutritionist when switching to an all natural diet. poultreepark.com

Teeth cleaning is essential for the health of your dogs and cats and unfortunately commercial feeds do not provide this. Our cats and dogs need to eat meat off the bones and consume some raw bones. You may be spending quite a bit of money each year to have your animals’ teeth cleaned when their diet could take care of this for you. You may have animals that have itchy problematic skin. Many things could cause this but it is a known fact that the diet plays a major role in this ailment. A lot of people that have switched to a natural diet have eliminated these skin problems. This is just a very brief overview and more will follow in Part 2 in a month’s time … Disclaimer: You should seek professional veterinary advice if your animal is unwell

NEW TRUCK FOR BELLI BRIGADE The Belli Park Rural Fire Brigade recently received a shiny new firefighting truck to help protect local properties. Nigel Terrell from QFES Caloundra said, “Belli Park 51 is worth over $200,000 and it shows QFES continued support for the community of Belli Park.” First Officer, Rick Mannington shared, “We are excited to have such a state of the art piece of equipment and we now have a number of months to learn how to use the new equipment before the fire season starts later in the year.”

Here are two photos of a cluster of micro bats having a snooze. These bats decided to roost behind one of my outdoor speakers. I had forgotten they were there and put on some INXS before realising. Quickly turned off the music to find six trembling figures wedged there...needless to say, they never came back. Greg Davison, Doonan. 16

What's in the Spotlight

Due to family commitments, this sadly will be my last Nature Notes. I started many years ago; my first article was in Nov 2006! It was about Squirrel gliders. Amazingly I still have the copy of that ‘Green.’ Originally I thought Nature Notes would be a one off thing, but ended up doing it all those years...

Discover the Coast’s hidden treasures

The purpose was to help people understand and often empathise with the natural world we humans so dominate. Not all wildlife is soft, cute and cuddly. Quite often it is hairy, fast moving and has eight legs, or is long and scaly. The last five weeks has seen me travelling back and forth to Nambour Hospital visiting my husband - and even those trips gave me a chance for some wildlife spotting. Flying across the highway near Yandina was a jabiru one morning… not to mention several flocks of the large flock pigeons that are as big as crows flying overhead. What amazes me is the determined and powerful flight of these birds. I’d love someone to tell me how these flocks decide where they will feed and the fact that trees are fruiting. I guess that also fits in with how water birds know that rivers many hundreds of miles away are in flood. Another wonderful sight was a wedgetailed eagle very close to Nambour Hospital. The sheer number of dead animals on the road was also a very powerful reminder of the impact of “us” being here.

Local museums and heritage sites will open their doors for a weekend of discovery on May 6 and 7. Pencil the Heritage Discovery Weekend into your diary to learn more about our region’s history. Enter the sele competition to win some great prizes. More details via council's website.

Have your say today!

There are many people I’d like to thank for helping with Nature Notes over the years including Paul Lloyd, Christine Hartley and John Jeffreys. But far and away the person I’d like to thank is Kon Hepers for his wonderful Nature Notes contributions every month for several years now. Kon really saved the day for me as I think one runs dry after a couple of years. Kon brought a whole new perspective as his topics range includes insects etc. You have been amazing Kon. Thank you. I hope we can continue to enjoy your Nature Notes for a long while yet! It’s really hard to create a segment that is factually correct and can be very time intensive to cross reference every statement. We certainly don’t want “fake news.” I’m also gratified to see other people sending in wildlife photographs and contributing their wildlife moments to the Eumundi Green. Thanks everyone for reading my Notes …
