Notes

A HINTERLAND MOMENT Editor’s note ... “To have the legal side of separation managed in such a professional and diligent manner was a weight lifted off me, allowing me to spend more valuable and precious time with my beautiful son…”

Beautiful bushwalking weather in the hinterland at the moment and we’re lucky enough to have the Eumundi Conservation Park nearby. I love walking early while the wallabies are still on the track and the bush is still covered in autumn mist. It turns the forest into something magical – and when the sun breaks through the trees with shards of light, the birds celebrate the day with a resounding chorus. And everything is put into perspective.

‘An Evening with Australian Native Bees’ at Eumundi’s School of Arts Hall on Friday 19 May was a sold out event, attracting a diverse cross section of the community and bee enthusiasts from across the Coast. The engaging guest speakers - entomologist ecologist Tim Heard, native bee expert Prof Tobias Smith, and crop consultant and beekeeper Chris Fuller - gave insight into their passion and profession. Tim Heard, author of The Australian Native Bee Book, shared his insight into native species, while Tobias discussed the situation in global crop pollination and the role bees can play in addressing it. Local apiarist Chris discussed his use of native bees in macadamia farming. Evening highlights were the panel discussion and the hive demonstration. The event was organised through the Sunshine Hinterland Writers and Readers Fund (SHWRF) championed by Arts Eumundi Culture (ACE), who also held the very successful ‘Evening with Birds’ last year. Event organiser and SHWRF executor Judith Pattison attributed the evening’s success to the volunteers. “We had a great team which made it really enjoyable, including the Eumundi Book Club who helped with promotion and on the night,” she said.

“What’s more, the presentations were excellent - the images magical,” Judith enthused. “The collaboration section of the event appealed to the whole audience - it is well worth repeating for other future writers.” Chair of the Eumundi Historical Association Donata Page said of the event, “Judi and her Eumundi book club continue to choose subjects for their events that appeal to a broad demographic in the hinterland that hasn’t really been catered to previously – but really who’s not interested in birds and bees!” Tobias Smith said, “It was a lot of fun, and I had a great time - I’m not one for puns, but I really felt buzzed by the end of the night!” The intention of SHWRF is to make the best of Australian literature accessible to communities in the area, through a range of activities such as author events, panel discussions and smaller activities such as writing workshops.

Community MECHANIC CLASSES FOR TEENS

NEW FIRE TRUCK FOR EUMUNDI The Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade volunteers were given the keys to their new fire truck last Thursday at the Pacey St shed.

With two teenage boys on the brink of getting their L’s and P’s, Liz Battersby of Eumundi was keen for her sons to learn some basic auto mechanics and become familiar with what is ‘under the bonnet’ of their vehicles. “Many teens have just no idea, and after seeing a Facebook post about a young lady filling her engine up with petrol because she really had no idea where the petrol went, I thought other teens might be interested too,” Liz explained. “Also, many teens are not always eager to learn from their parents and would benefit from someone more knowledgeable than me,” she shared. Liz said this where local

mechanic and Eumundi State School dad Brady Jansen from Eumundi Automotive stepped in. “I approached him with this Under the Bonnet workshop idea and he was incredibly helpful and willing to give of his time for free.” On a recent Tuesday night, Brady taught a group of local teenagers from Noosa District State High School and St Teresa’s College a few basics like tyre changing, checking oil, tyre pressure and under bonnet fluid levels. Brady said, “It was great to see the enthusiasm and interest in learning how to look after their vehicles.” Brady felt the workshop had

merit as it gave the teens some auto independence. “Plus when their out on the roads, they’ll have the skills to maintain their cars,” he explained. “And if something does goes wrong they’ll know how to fix it or understand if they need to go to a mechanic before things get serious.” The workshop with Brady at his Low St garage was so successful that Liz and Brady are keen to hold them on a regular monthly basis - especially if funding can be secured. If you’re interested in signing your teens up contact: Liz 0409 972 196 or Eumundi Automotive 5442 7478.

The brigade has a number of open days coming up on Wed 4 and Sat 10 June. The crew will be discussing bushfire preparation, and the community are invited to come and check out the new truck.

Arts

Creative hinterland studios MEL LUMB – CERAMICIST Where is your creative space? I live with my family on a small hobby farm in Eumundi. I share a large shed with my husband who is currently building his first boat - so it’s a little crazy in there at times.

Why do you enjoy working there? It’s such a spectacular location… the scenery… the wildlife. We’re at the base of Cooroy Mountain and I honestly think there’s something magic about this place. We have quite a few animals here too, so I get to visit them throughout the day.

Does where you work influence what you create? The influence of my environment has been massive. I’m more tuned in to nature here than I ever was living in Sydney. So I find plenty of inspiration in the surrounding beauty. And it’s just so peaceful here, it’s conducive to creativity. When I first moved to Eumundi I worked in corporate - I’ve now given that away completely.

What is it about ceramics and the wheel that you’re so passionate about? It’s my meditation. When I’m on the wheel I zone out from everything except what I’m making in that moment. Plus the tactile nature of working with clay is so good. It’s physical, messy and a little unpredictable. It’s also extremely rewarding. It’s the first job I’ve ever had where I receive such beautiful feedback from people and are enjoying having my pieces in their homes.

Photos thanks to David Lumb.

Where do you exhibit? Where your work is available to buy? I’m currently exhibiting at Coastal Artisans, Peregian Beach. Sadly they’ll be closing next month as Brenda is planning a move to Tassie. But my work will soon be with the lovely Bec at Circa 70 in Mooloolaba and I also sell online. I’m planning on also having the occasional studio sale here at home too. mellumb.com.au

Heritage MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES AUSTRALIA CONFERENCE Wendy Birrell, Manager Discover Eumundi I was fortunate enough to attend a recent Museums and Galleries conference held in Brisbane thanks to a bursary through Council. Day one was geared towards regional and remote museums, starting with the creative director from Kids in Museums, a UK based charity that has a 20 point manifesto which came about from a feeling that museums are not always friendly places to visit, with do not touch signs and little thought of visitor comfort. Since 2005, Kids in Museums have been assisting museums to be more family friendly.

we currently do well and which we can improve on. Here are a couple of the 20: No 3: Share stories with each other & listen - families can be experts too; No 14: Please touch! as often as you can. Everyone finds real objects awesome. Direct kids to things that can be handled, teach respect and explain why others can’t. There were lots of take home ideas that I hope to be able to implement at DE over time. For those interested in finding out more about Kids in Museums, go to kidsinmuseums.org.uk.

The manifesto was created from 1000s of museum visitor comments made by families, children and teenagers. All of the 20 ideas are low cost or no cost, and many are small changes with big impact. The document is inspirational and we at Discover Eumundi (DE) will soon be looking through this document to see what aspects

One of the major competitions of the Cooroy Community Bowls Club, The High Rollers, had their end of season presentation night at the Hub in Cooroy. The top two teams for the season played off for the Terry Silver Memorial Cup. After a huge struggle, the Bushrangers - John Luttmer, John Ison and Russell Butler (from Cooroy) - defeated the Carlton Kings: Brow Hayes, Lloyd Scott and Nick Steward (from Eumundi). The Underwaters took out third place, with the BC’s taking out the Wooden Spoon award in fourth.

(a misnomer!) commences from September and is a night time game. When you join in with us, you don’t need a uniform or your own equipment, and we don’t impose strict rules - we just have a good time. Annual membership is $10 and then pay as you play. For further information call Russell 5447 7716.

Eumundi Swim Club’s AGM, presentation and break-up were combined recently to celebrate another outstanding season. Kaitlyn Walker and Troy Carlson’s success at the National Age Championships in Brisbane last month were the culmination of their dedication and excellence over the last twelve months. Both had been recognized as Wide Bay Champions in butterfly, but above all the medals, coach Adrian Williams drew attention to the character shown by Troy in gaining a silver medal in 50m freestyle the day after a disappointing result in the 200m butterfly.

As a parent, it is great to hear the focus on the development of our swimmers not just as athletes, but as sportsmen and sportswomen. Swimmers from Under seven to 15 plus were awarded Most Improved and Age Champion on the basis of points accumulated over the season for personal bests and participation. Club Champions this season were Mitchell Warren and Sylvie Scott. Adrian commented on the bright future for the club, with a number of younger swimmers coming through and training in the State Development Squad, alongside the Super Squad.

The inaugural Eumundi Swim carnival held in March was a major highlight and the teamwork, commitment and effort of all the parents involved was commended. Outgoing president Wendy Walker was thanked for the leadership she had shown and new president Angela James is excited about the year ahead with such a great group of kids and parents to share it with. Squads are back in training and new members are welcome to come along to the pool or eumundi@ widebayswimming.org.au. Swim Club will re-start in October.

Health RESTORE YOUR CORE

Samantha Williams, Trainer & Gym Manager, Eumundi

More than ever, we as women and mums need to know about the importance of strengthening our core - the body’s powerhouse. But not the way you might think! Eumundi Fitness at Eumundi Aquatic Centre presented their first free seminar for women in the Eumundi community. As a personal trainer and mum, I know the importance of having the core strong and stable before getting back into exercise post birth. I’m passionate about supporting women to be at their optimal health. So our first seminar had to be “How to Restore Your Core” with special guest Dr Alice Mackenzie from Alchemy in Motion Physiotherapy. Alice spoke of how women must learn to activate their core before and after having children by first activating the pelvic floor muscles. Without this activation and awareness we can actually be doing more harm than good - especially during exercise. During the morning Alice demonstrated how to activate the pelvic muscles effectively, why we need to do this at all stages, and how to incorporate this activation into exercise and everyday life. We learnt some practical pilates exercises using this activation awareness, with the dos and don’ts of core activation such as always activate your core from the pelvic floor upwards - start by breathing in and out. Then gently bring the pelvic floor muscles up to encourage your body to activate the core in the correct way, preventing a pushing down effect which can further weaken your pelvic floor. Our attendees left feeling empowered. By understanding our core, how it truly works, and as women learn how important

the pelvic floor muscles are to our rehabilitation after child birth, we can become stronger, fitter and more in tune with our bodies. We can learn how to prevent injury, prolapse and much more by doing this activation correctly. The morning was a great success and this is the first of many health, fitness and wellness seminars that we intend to hold every month for our community at Eumundi Fitness. 0407 747 807.

N AT U R A L V S C O M M E R C I A L F E E D F O R D O G S A N D C AT S – PA R T 2 A few weeks ago (Issue 267), I outlined some pros and cons of feeding a commercial, unnatural diet to dogs and cats versus a natural diet. The major positives towards a natural diet were relating to teeth cleaning when gnawing on bones and the improvement of skin ailments. If you search the internet you will come across many testimonials from pet owners of the benefits they have experienced when switching to a natural diet. The switch from commercial to natural isn’t just a matter of cutting out tinned food or dog rolls and giving them bones. There are other items they require to get a balanced and healthy diet, particularly in regard to dogs. Just like we are advised to see a dietician for the correct dietary advice, the same goes for dogs and cats. An animal nutritionist, or vet, can guide you down the right path to ensure optimum wellbeing for your pet. Although cats can live on meat and raw bones alone, dogs do require a little bit extra to supplement their protein intake. For example; in the wild, dogs feed on animal carcasses and these can contain pre-digested or partially digested vegetable matter in the stomachs. As we all know, there are lots of vitamins and minerals in vegetables, as well as fibre, that assist with good health. When feeding a natural diet to a dog it is also important to include raw or semi-cooked chemical-

free vegetables to mimic their natural feeding patterns. There are food items dogs and cats must not eat, so it pays to familiarise yourself with these. Your table scraps can be put to good use when you own a dog or two! There are so many nutritional supplements on the market for pets. Many are probably highly beneficial, but they can really attack your wallet. What are my favourite and more affordable supplements? Kelp as a dry powder (meal) or a liquid and brewer’s yeast. A wellstructured natural eating plan may see your dog or cat thrive and save you money on vet bills in the long-run! You should seek professional veterinary advice if your animal is unwell or underweight and seek advice from a qualified Animal Nutritionist when switching to an all-natural diet. poultreepark.com

In my garden I found this perfect, intact exoskeleton – each minute detail can still be seen on the discarded shell, right down to the fine hairs on the legs which can also be seen on the live grasshopper. They may be considered garden pests, but I can’t help being in awe at the beauty and perfection of nature. Regardless of our opinions, they are an important part of the ecosystem. N atu re N otes ANTECHINUS IDENTITY Kon Hepers, Eumundi

Australia’s largest sustainable farm input company is right here on your doorstep!

We used to have two species of antechinus in this area – the Brown Antechinus (Antechinus stuarti) and the Yellow-footed Antechinus (A flavipes). Then taxonomists decided that in this area the Brown was not a Brown, but a subspecies named Subtropical Antechinus (A subtropicus). At our place two years ago an antechinus trapped itself in a bucket containing some water which gave us a good photo opportunity. These little creatures are so swift and agile that it is close to impossible to get a photo out in their native habitat and, besides, they are nocturnal.

Antechinus.

We had previously seen antechinus in our house when one Christmas a female decided that our kitchen provided a safe environment wherein to abandon her thirteen babies. Mainly from their yellow feet we identified them as the yellow-footed species (that is what “flavipes” means). When we looked more closely at the images of the one trapped in the bucket something did not quite fit with previous photos of the yellow-footed species. There seemed to be a minor difference. Taxonomists at Queensland Museum informed us that they had named a “new” species of antechinus found in the Brisbane area as Antechinus mysticus. Previously it was thought to just be a slightly different yellow-footed antechinus. They were most interested in our little captive and told us that this was the first recording of A. mysticus outside of Brisbane. Full marks to us! So we are always hopeful that there are more species yet to be discovered. In the last few weeks some little creature has been scampering all over our house, even climbing into the back of our lounge and scrabbling around when we are sitting there watching TV. We caught a glimpse a couple of times and thought it could be a small rat, a large mouse or an antechinus. It never nibbled at any of our food packets in the pantry so we provisionally excluded rat. Mice also nibble at food. When running around in the house they stick close to the walls, unlike this creature which races through the middle of the room. This was probably not a mouse. Then we were lucky. The little critter jumped/ fell into one of those clear plastic storage boxes in our garage. This was our chance for a close look and a photo, even though it never stayed still and kept on trying to jump out but could not quite make it. But we could clearly see that its tail was shorter than its head/body length and had some longer hairs right at the tip. Mice and rats have a smooth tail longer than their head/body. So … antechinus. But what species? The giveaway were the “daggy” non-rounded ears, the

long hairs at the tip of its tail and bright yellow feet – Yellow-footed Antechinus! And the final conclusive evidence: the droppings are not like the little mouse pellets but rather like sticky little dead caterpillars. In Australia there are about a dozen species of antechinus, plus dozens of species that are very similar in looks and behaviour. They belong to a large family of native marsupials called dasyurids (meaning: with straggly-haired tails) containing over 70 mainly mouse-sized animals but also including the cat-sized quolls and the large Tasmanian Devil. Antechinus means “Hedgehog-like”, a very poor translation. They are vicious little carnivores whose main diet is insects. Females do not have a “regular” pouch but have a flap which gives the young some shelter as they get dragged along holding on to her nipples. Mortality rate is very high. If a baby drops off, it dies. As they get a bit older the young ones fight furiously with one another, sometimes to the death. Every year, directly after breeding, all the mature males die from stress caused by this frenetic activity. Please be careful when setting mouse traps lest you catch harmless little natives. We only use live traps so that natives can be released. Our little captive was released into the bush unharmed. 17
