who’s who at the zoo? You’re local real estate agent, Lisa Jones and the love for Eumundi! I love the relaxed way of life! The wonderful local businesses that are ‘Eumundi Style’, The Imperial Hotel, HumDrum coffee, Berkelouew Books, just to name a few. There is great shopping, great markets and lots of restaurants, coffee houses and beautiful parks. The community is so welcoming, diverse and passionate about the hinterland and all things bright and beautiful. I love seeing the wildlife, the pigs, goats, alpacas and horses on peoples properties. The dams with ducks and other birdlife, the kookaburras going off in the evening, not to mention the magical sunsets and the fantastic Queensland weather. Lisa Jones 0438 357 051

Notes Editor’s note ... Eumundi is feeling green and creative lately with lots of fab community projects coming together. Great news that the Eumundi Community Garden has finally been given the go-ahead to get digging (page 7), and a group of locals are bringing boomerang bags to Eumundi (page 15). Eumundi’s amazing project for musical kids – The School of Rock – is back and auditioning soon. And I’ve had so much great feedback about our hinterland studio series – which we continue this issue (page 9). I love getting a peek inside where our artisans create. Big news for the village too when the tanks for the new brewery arrived (page 6) – Eumundi getting its brew back is so close now I can taste it! We are definitely a community of go-getters – no wonder it’s such a fantastic place to live.

Celebrating our extraordinary markets | Eumundi is a Marquee destination for cultural tourists to the Sunshine Coast. Some 1.2 million visitors attend the famous Eumundi Markets each year. And, without the untiring efforts in theTerraces precinct by Eumundi District Community Association (EDCA) and Eumundi Historic Association (EHA) our markets would not have the depth and global reach that they enjoy. There is incredible co-operative funding now underway in re-developing the Terraces with a $1.4million investment for a brilliant new amenity, both for the Wenesday and Saturday markets - and for the community on non-market days. EDCA, EHA & Experience Eumundi are contributing more than one half of the funding envelope, with Sunshine Coast Council putting in the balance.

Business EUMUNDI CHAMBER AGM REPORT Louise Formosa, ECC secretary, Eumundi

The Eumundi of Chamber of Commerce (ECC) held their AGM at the Imperial’s Green Room on Thursday 25 May. The night was a great celebration of Chamber’s achievements over the last year with increased membership and income. ECC is currently working on a number of projects such as the 50 Year Naming of the Sunshine Coast event where Chamber was able to secure a $10,000 grant from Council. Chamber is also working closely with the Experience Eumundi team to create the Horizon Street Art festival in August and encouraging local business participation in these events. With lobbying Council for street upgrades, working with Noosa Tourism and Visit Sunshine Coast, as well as driving future projects including a revamp to Chamber’s brand, website and new member services, the management committee have been very busy! Cr Greg Rogerson presided as Chair for the evening, and changes to the management committee included the retirement of long standing president Andy Dudas from the

Fig Tree Eumundi, with Cindy Suters from Artisans Gallery stepping up as president, and David Perez from Villa Prestige Properties, taking on the vice president position. I will be remaining as secretary and Carol Dolan from Noosa Hinterland Realty is continuing in our much appreciated treasurer role. New president Cindy Suters stated, “the Chamber is going from strength to strength and whilst there has been quite a lot of focus on the main street, Chamber will be focusing more on improving member services and making sure Chamber works for what its members want. We are also committed to involving our members in our projects and networking initiatives as well as creating working committees so our members can become more involved in what we are doing.” Past president Andy Dudas noted, “I was very pleased with Chamber’s direction and was happy to retire given the new and invigorated interest in Chamber leadership. “I was happy to be a proud member that can still make a valuable contribution,” he shared.

SUNSHINE COAST

It was a fantastic moment for Eumundi recently when the first of five semi-trailers, decked out with equipment made in North America for the new brewery, rolled into town. Head Brewer Chris Sheehan, who is now based at the Eumundi Brewery and overseeing the instalment, said, “It was an incredibly exciting – a spine tingling moment actually - to see my brewery hopes and dreams roll into town on the back of a truck.” Now the long process of

installation begins. Specialist brewery engineers Lorne, Luke and Boyd, will be working ten hours a day, six days a week well into July to get the kit of 15 tanks, plus many other bits and pieces, up and running. By July the first brews should be going into the tanks, which will be ready to taste three weeks later. Assistant Brewer Allan Tilden will be migrating north from Sydney around the same time to join the team. “All going well, we’ll have beer in our hands in August,” Chris shared.

CR GREG ROGE RSON Division 10 Food For Thought ... Well, you’d have been hard pressed missing the recent coverage and criticism council has copped regarding its actions at the verge garden in Buderim. I’m going to put forward a few extremely pertinent points regarding this issue, which many people either don’t seem to be aware of, or simply refuse to acknowledge. Firstly, road reserve is road reserve, regardless of whether it is in a quiet street in Buderim with low traffic and pedestrian flows or a main collector road in Maroochydore, Eumundi - or wherever. Road reserve is there for pedestrian paths, roads, drainage and enabling various utilities such as water, sewerage and electricity. Council has an obligation to encourage our community to improve the look of our region, but we also have an obligation to protect you - our residents - from safety hazards and potential litigation. In light of this, council offered

free permits to all landowners in the vicinity of this urban food street. The purpose of these permits was to ensure things like driveway access and lines of sight for people in cars entering and exiting the properties, as well as safe movements for pedestrians and cyclists within the road reserve. In 99% of cases where a landowner cooperates with Council and signs one of these free permits, they don’t incur any extra financial charges from their home insurance provider. The reason for this is that insurance companies feel secure that if a homeowner has signed a permit with council, the road reserve area in question will have been thoroughly checked and cleared for potential safety risks and monitored accordingly. The overwhelming majority of residents who’ve worked with council and obtained one of these permits have been extremely happy with the outcome. So it baffles me as to why the landowner in this instance refused to work with

us. If somebody was injured in any way because their lines of sight were impeded on this road reserve where the fruit trees were situated in Buderim, council would be squarely in the firing line and could be heavily sued by the injured party. You, as ratepayers of the Sunshine Coast, would have been required to stump up (no pun intended!) for court and liability costs. That is why we were legally obligated to ensure the landowner in this instance, worked with us and signed a FREE permit to ensure that no costing would be incurred by Council if an incident occurred on the road reserve. Council was simply trying to ensure our legal obligations were covered and hence protecting you as a ratepayer. What is so unreasonable about this? If the landowner had worked with us, we could have had a very different outcome to the one we saw last week. By the way, negotiations regarding this have occurred over the last eight months!

Creative hinterland studios M I C H E L L E J O N E S – T I M B E R E N G R AV E R Where is your creative space? My backyard studio is in a reclaimed shipping container in Eumundi.

Why do you enjoy working there? I have been in the corporate world for 30 years, so to be able to be so creative - in my own studio that my husband built for me - I can’t tell you how truly happy it makes me every day! Even though we’ve lived in the Eumundi area for about 15 years, since starting my business, Red Peg Laser, and being at the markets collaborating on projects with local artists, I am meeting so many wonderful people.

Does where you work influence what you create? Eumundi itself is a big influence on my work. There are so many wonderfully creative people here and I find it really inspiring. I have had creative ideas locked inside my head for years so the chance to put them to good use is amazing.

What is it about wood that you’re so passionate about? I love working with timber – I love the smell. Even when I make numerous pieces the same, they are all slightly different because of the texture and the grain of the timber that I’m using.

Where do you sell your work? I have a stall at the Original Eumundi Markets. My online shop will be live in a few weeks. redpeglaser.com.au or michelle@redpeglaser.com.au. Photos: Sacha HMcL.

MINDFULNESS PHOTOGRAPHY Katie Johnston, Eumundi After hearing about mindfulness photography on a recent trip I made a promise to myself I would try it when I got home - I didn’t count the Grand Canyon, Giant Red Wood Forest, Yosemite and the Canadian landscape as a fair start. After happily snapping the stunning scenery, I got home and it was back to demands of normality. It wasn’t long until I started feeling heavy again. I was missing the aliveness I felt on holidays. Now was a perfect time to start my challenge. At first I thought of a list of beautiful places I could go to start my mindfulness photography project until I realised that wasn’t the point. I charged my camera and went into my backyard. I sat there for a while thinking of all the jobs I could see that needed to be done. But eventually I took a few deep breaths and made an intention to see beauty. My world transformed before my eyes. I could see vibrant greens and deep browns like I had never seen before. I saw sparkling

skies, fluffy clouds and glistening water. I watched a leaf catch its first raindrop. I saw ants and little critters soldiering through their day. I heard the birds, the wind, the water and felt the sun and the clouds on my skin. I started taking photos. I got up close to things I have never noticed. I saw how alive it was and I felt open. Then sat up on my veranda and watched it all work together as my backyard. The heaviness lifted and was replaced with an immense sense of wonder, gratitude and love. A simple 30-minute exercise had re-energised me. It was a gift and one I’d like to share. Join me at Eumundi Wellness & Massage for a free tutorial on mindfulness photography. Sunday 18 June, 10.30am - 11.30pm. Bring a camera phone or a camera (the quality of the photo isn’t the point). Everyone welcome. eumundiwellness.com

Arts SCHOOL OF ROCK BACK FOR 2017

M AT C H B O X S H O W I N E U M U N D I

Lani Kenzler, Noosaville Following the incredible success of the inaugural program last year, Eumundi School of Rock returns for 2017 with a brilliant performance and learning experience for budding local rock stars. With professional mentoring and development, 20 scholarship students at primary and junior secondary school level will get good at their musical craft and form proper rock bands - playing an end of year gig in December. Program founder Katie Noonan explained, “Eumundi School of Rock provides a unique opportunity - at no cost to the student – to develop their musical skills and learn stagecraft under the tutorship of top professionals, and step up and truly perform to a real audience as part of a genuine rock band.” “We see incredible outcomes for students including selfesteem, stagecraft, musicianship and teamwork as part of a

performing Rock Band,” Katie shared. Students from grades three to eight either living in, or attending schools within the 4562, 4561 or 4563 postcode districts are welcome to apply. The 2017 program kicks off on 12 June and applications close by 21st July. Audition kits are available by emailing eumundirockschool@gmail.com or go to the Eumundi School of Rock Facebook page.

The Matchbox Show ceramics collection will be on display at Wan’din’in arts space at Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre from Saturday 1 July until Sunday 16 July. The collection forms part of the Australasian and International Conference for wood fired and other ceramic arts ‘Smoke on the Water’, coming to Cooroy and the hinterland on 28 June. View hundreds of small ceramic artworks created by many artisans from Australia and overseas, all displayed in matchboxes. Miniature in size but elaborate in concept and execution, these artworks

collectively make a powerful statement. Creator Michael ‘Civa’ Ciavarella explained the vision he had to start this unique and collaborative exhibition was to help keep ceramic art alive and kicking. “My obligation is to help people expand and grow as a community through art, creating and sharing the sense of identity and belonging.” The exhibition will open on Saturday 1 July, 10am. Civa will be giving a curator’s talk in on Friday 14 July, 11am. All welcome but please RSVP to info@discovereumundi.com.

Successful scholarship winners will be announced at the School of Rock launch event on 26 August as part of the upcoming Horizon Festival of Culture and Arts.

HOBBY HORSE RIDING The Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled hosted a dressage and trail competition in North Arm recently and topped off the day with the Coast’s first Hobby Horse Event. Judges from Equestrian Queensland assessed impulsion, rhythm and execution of required movements performed by both junior and senior competitors. While the competition was light hearted and friendly, there is a serious side to competitive hobby horse events as it provides a simple and easy way for people - young and old - to engage in physical and social activities.

Preparing for an event, Hobby Horse riders need to develop rhythm and spatial awareness in a similar way that other horse riders do. Sport EUMUNDI NETBALL CLUB “Welcome back Eumundi Netball Club,” called the announcer at last year’s opening parade of the Noosa Netball junior competition. Amongst the 40 or so netball teams assembled on court, stood three new teams from Eumundi, beaming with pride and enthusiasm. The Eumundi Netball Club it seems, had been taking a “break” - perhaps like a netballer does when she sits out for a quarter - having a welldeserved rest in order to come back energised and fresh. So, although the kids in these three teams might not have known, they were now part of a club with a long and rich history of community support. When I arrived in the district a few years ago I was keen to see my two daughters play the fabulous team sport that I’d enjoyed my whole life. It only took a few conversations with some long-time locals to see that I was mistaken in thinking there was no local netball club. We just needed to bring it back to the court after its rest.

Fiona Bastow, coach, Eumundi

How it all began … 26 years ago, two Eumundi mums - Judi Britten and Marlene Ramsey - had daughters who were keen to play netball, but back then there was no club and no history to draw upon. So, in 1991 the Eumundi Netball Club was born with Marlene as coach and Judi manager. Their daughters, along with six other Year six girls from Eumundi State School played each Saturday in their school uniform (Marlene is pictured below with this team). Community support grew with Joe’s Waterhole and Eumundi Community & District Association (EDCA) providing financial support for the club. Eumundi Netball Club became large and successful. At its peak there were six teams - all of which made the Grand Final in that year.

the club in 2011, then Jude and I worked together to get it going again in 2016. There have been many families involved along the way, volunteering their time in all sorts of ways. Currently the club has four teachers and mums coaching - as well as one dad too. Also, it’s not just Eumundi daughters on court nowadays; two of our local sons have joined in too. So, although the Eumundi Netball Club looks a little different than it used to, it’s the same strong club kept alive by a sense of family and community.

“Many thanks for your time, expertise, support and mentoring … Please know that what you do, is far beyond legal advice and makes a significant positive difference to ones life!” DI, SUNSHINE BEACH.

We will help you with: • parenting arrangements • financial support for you and your children • property arrangements on separation • obtaining a divorce We are located in Noosaville but will happily travel from Gympie to Caloundra to meet with our clients.

We offer an initial FREE half hour consultation.

The club has had a couple of rests over its history, each time revived by mums wanting their daughters to play. Jude Cettou and Chrissie Cook re-established

Living BOOMERANG BAGS FOR EUMUNDI Most locals try to remember to bring their own bags and reduce waste as much as possible, but how many of us head off to the shops and realise half way there that we’ve forgotten the stash of reusable bags - again?! Well rather than feeling terrible about taking yet another singleuse plastic bag for your vegies we’ve come up with a solution – an exciting community project: Boomerang Bags Eumundi! Worldwide, around 1 million plastic bags are used every minute. Currently, only 5% of single-use plastic bags are actually recycled. Roughly 50% is buried in landfills, a small proportion is made into durable goods, and the remaining is “unaccounted for” – lost in the environment where it ultimately washes out to sea through drains and waterways. 50% of the world’s plastic goes into items

only used once: coffee cups, straws, bottles and bags. Our little team of volunteers are keen to help change our community’s habits when it comes to using plastic bags. We will be sewing reusable carry bags from up-cycled fabric, then leave them in a couple of pick up stations around town. You can grab one when you’re shopping in town and you’ve forgotten your reusable bag. All we ask is that you return it to one of the boomerang bag pick up spots next time you are coming past - so that others can use them too!

Alice Jones, Eumundi

We need your help We are forming a network of keen locals who will cut, sew, donate, or help in other ways. All sewing skill levels are welcome.

What we need

• Clean, strong fabrics with no stretch: cottons, linens, calico (old pillow cases or sheets as long as they are clean and unmarked) • Mens ties - any fabric • Thread - plain cotton or poly/ cotton on reels • You! - anyone who wants to help. If you have donations of any of the above, a couple of local businesses have kindly offered to be drop off points. If you have a large amount of items to donate, please email us first.

Drop off points for donations:

• Humdrum Café • Eumundi Pharmacy • Eumundi Coffee Stall (on market days) • Eumundi State School Office

We will be holding regular sewing groups in town, but will also have jobs (like cutting) and sewing packs for people to do at home as well. To register your interest, skills or donations, please join our Facebook group: Boomerang Bags Eumundi or BoomerangBagsEumundi@ hotmail.com.

Health WINTER WORK OUT - HOW TO S TAY M O T I VAT E D !

Be Fit Pilates

Brooke Conlan, Personal trainer, Eumundi So, the colder months have arrived and getting out of bed to start your morning workout is getting harder and harder ... What can you do to stay motivated through the chilly mornings and stay on track? Firstly, being prepared is still the key when it comes to keeping motivated with your fitness program. Even more so in winter! Have everything laid out ready to launch out of bed to get dressed and organised. No one wants to be fumbling around looking for their favourite running shorts in the cold ... If you are starting early prepare your breakfast the night before. Enjoy the time of day! Mornings are the best part of the day; you catch the sunrise, hear the birds chirping, and if you’re lucky you may be up before the rest of the household - so peace and quiet is a bonus! Don’t let the cool mornings deter you; take this time to focus on you and what your intentions are for the day. Set a goal - goals help keep you focused and you are more likely to stay committed if you are working towards something. You may decide to train for an event, increase your running distance, increase your muscle strength or

Dance into shape for winter get to the top of that mountain in record time. Whatever your goal may be, however big or small, a goal is a goal and every day you stay committed is progress! Grab a buddy - if you are struggling to keep focused in winter ask a friend or your trainer to motivate you each day and keep you accountable. A quick message or word of encouragement can be all it takes for you to say, “Hey, I am going to nail this today!” If you are still finding it hard to commit, then a personal trainer or group fitness class may be the way to go. Working out with other like-minded people may be all the motivation you need. Good luck, stay strong - and embrace the cold! 0408 077 699

World environment day

World Environment Day (WED) was on the 5 June. WED was introduced back in the ‘70s by the United Nations to encourage worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. The Sunshine Coast hosts a WED Festival every year, now at Cotton Tree. It is always so inspiring to be amongst like-minded people, sharing news, ideas, beliefs, music and food. This year the festival was beautiful, vibrant, warm, happy and plastic free! Yes, it seems to be an environmental concern on everyone’s lips at the moment: let’s reduce our plastic use and save the oceans! It was great to see so many amazing local people doing their best to educate us all on the current environmental issues. If you haven’t yet watched ABC’s War on Waste, you really should. It’s on iView so you can’t miss it! Craig Reucassel has no qualms about getting down and dirty and showing

us where our waste ends up and the impact that our consumer choices have on the environment. We all need to see this. With plastic such a hot topic, coming up next month is Plastic Free July. This started in WA in 2011 and is now taking the country by storm and hopefully the World! Quite simply, Plastic Free July is all about refusing single use plastic: plastic bags, plastic cutlery, coffee cups etc. If you want to play a part, head to plasticfreejuly.com to accept the challenge! We are so lucky to have Eumundi Markets as a plastic free market. It all starts at home. Eumundi Bushcare Group’s next working bee will be Sunday 25 June, 8.30 to 11am. Remember we have a plastic free morning tea at the end with lovely homemade goodies to share. This month we will be talking about how to say no to single use plastic for Plastic Free July. See you there!

Found this approx. six foot python slithering around our house today and thought it might be good to share - warning residents now that winter is here and snakes are coming out to keep warm. It looks like he’d just had a feed too and was on his way back to his hiding place, a down-pipe on an adjoining unit! I know carpet pythons aren’t dangerous, but others could be slithering around! Outdoors GREEN WASTE RECYCLING BENEFITS

Australia’s largest sustainable farm input company is right here on your doorstep!

QLD GARDEN EXPO Each year Australians send 4 million tonnes of food to landfill. That’s $8 billion worth of fresh food, leftovers, packaged and long-life products, drinks, frozen food and takeaways. Australians discard up to 20% of the food they purchase. That equates to 1 out of every 5 bags of groceries. An estimated 20-40% of fruit and vegetables are rejected before they reach shop shelves, mostly because they don’t match supermarkets and consumers high cosmetic standards. Our decisions can help make a difference.

Why reducing landfill important? Food waste impacts our environment. If green waste is added to your household rubbish bin, it is dumped in landfill. In landfill organic material decomposes without oxygen (anaerobically). This process produces odorous gases and methane, which has a global warming potential 25 times greater than carbon dioxide. $8 BILLION WASTED EVERY YEAR • $2.67 billion of fresh food = 33% • $2.18 billion of leftovers = 27% • $1.17 billion of packaged and long-life products = 15% • $727 million of drinks = 9% • $727 million of frozen food = 9% • $566 million of takeaways = 7% WHY IS IT WASTED? • We cook too much food • Food is mistakenly thrown out before the use-by/best before date • We forget about leftovers in the fridge/freezer

Organic waste in landfill also produces leachate, a liquid that’s created as material decomposes. This leachate must be carefully managed as it contains harmful substances that can pollute groundwater and waterways. If green waste is composted, it’s a natural process of decomposition using oxygen (aerobically) that is good for the environment. It produces useful materials that can be put back into the earth to improve soil. Green waste is put back to earth, enriching the soil and helping to grow healthy crops and pastures that produce food for everyone. Composting supports beneficial organisms that live in the soil.

Queensland Garden Expo at the Nambour Showgrounds this 7 - 9 July is a three day celebration of gardening. Attracting over 35000 green thumbs, the event showcases the best of subtropical gardening with; lectures & demos, display gardens, over 360 exhibits including 55 nurseries, a giant kitchen garden, cooking stage, free children’s activities, plus great food and entertainment. qldgardenexpo.com.au

INSP ECT ORS MAK ING LIFE MIS ERA BLE Two days after cyclone Debbie hit the Coast, knocking out power to most for at least two days - a traum atic and testing experience for many - a friend of mine was ende avouring to pick up heavy battery backup supply equip ment from Eumundi Markets in an attempt to save their fridge contents, and run a water pump for essential water supply. Being a Saturday and the first day of the schoo l holidays, there were absolutely no parks anywhere near where the heavy equipment was. My friend parked in a disabled parking spot for no more than 20 seconds while someone loaded the equipment, but within that time two parking inspectors appe ared and gave them a $243 ticket - no questions asked . The driver was in the driver’s seat at all times and the engin e was running. The inspectors were told the driver was leaving immediately. After talking to market stallholder s, customers and management, I discovered that these overz ealous inspectors are making life miserable for all, are putting customers off and potentially ruining the marke t’s future prospects. The term (rabid) revenue collec tion springs to mind. If SCRC are trying to destroy the Eumu ndi Markets they are going the right way about it. How abou t some compassion and sensibility SCRC? Do other readers have a story on these parking inspectors they wish to relate to The Green and perhaps to Cr Rogerson? Mark Jones, Doonan.
