Notes Editor’s note ... Winter is here! And with it misty mornings, toasty fires and the overwhelming desire to stay in bed. With the recent house fire in Eerwah Vale, it’s a timely reminder though to turn off heaters and check fireplaces are cold before heading out. I’m well impressed to see our local stallies brave the cold, dark mornings to set up for market days. Is it my imagination or do the markets seem very busy? And Eumundi village feels busier every day lately? Even in the heart of winter... These stunning warm, blue days are worth getting up and out for and there’s been plenty of creative endeavours around the region. I think the local kids were itching for hinterland holiday adventures....

A HINTERLAND MOMENT

One kettle = 7 hot drinks! Even whilst at home I have retained my grey nomad habit of boiling one full kettle of water in the morning and making a pot of coffee and a thermos of tea. This provides me with hot drinks all day, giving me big savings on electricity! Babette Urban, Eumundi.

The Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade were called to an Eerwah Vale home fire on Browns Creek Rd earlier this month and soon brought the fire under control, but the house had already collapsed. Luckily, no one was in the house when the fire started, and a spokeswoman for the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service said it was one of the homeowners who discovered the fire mid-morning when they came home. Our Rural Brigade ask all locals to check your smoke alarms - you want plenty of warning…

Arts EUMUNDI WEARABLE ART COMP Wendy Roe, Eumundi Before coming to Australia 15 years ago I went to the New Zealand World of Wearable Art (WOW) show every year. I also introduced this concept into a local high school in NZ, which became part of their curriculum. So I guess you could say it’s a bit of a passion. With the success of the Friday Fashion shows at Eumundi Square it seemed an appropriate step to bring Wearable Art to The Square for this year’s Horizon Festival. Also, Eumundi is so unique with a thriving and diverse art community. I’m hoping this opportunity could

tempt some locals to take their art into a different arena! The comp is open to adults, children and art or design students. We are encouraging everybody to have a go and have fun. If it still seems a bit challenging to enter by yourself you can get together with a friend and nominate one person as the entrant. Five prize categories are: • Best Overall Design & Construction • Sustainability • Natural Dyed Creation • Best Head Piece • Best Student $250 Cash prize for winner in each category and you can enter more than one category. Entrants are required to either model their own creation or supply their own model. There’s no entry fee just register and submit by no later than 18 August. For info pack and registration details: 0413 217 422 or iloveeumundimarkets.com.

Monique Rylance has her Fleetwood Mac…. bohemian inspired boutique ‘Rock Lily Designs’ located at Eumundi Square. You were in the Navy?? Monique trained with the Royal Australian Navy as a medic, specialising in underwater medicine! Monique became a ships’ diver serving on a front line Frigate war ship ‘HMAS Sydney’ for 12 months and says her most challenging moments were diving under ships in the dead of night…though they were friendly ships… still scary stuff! Although this career was challenging and exciting for 10 years, Monique then travelled to the Sunshine Coast (12 years ago) and visited Eumundi Markets where her mind was officially blown and decided to stay! She fully explored her already keen interest in fabric, textures and designs leading to extensive travel in Asia and Europe seeking ethically made fabrics and opening her own fashion business in 2011.

Books STELLA PRIZE WINNER 2017

Judith Pattison, Doonan

I’ve followed the Stella Prize since its inception in 2013 and its short list and final winners have provided some of my most memorable reads. There are no formulas for the Prize: each book has been distinctive and unique. well; the characters and their interactions are perfect, but what stands out in the end is Abramovic’s performance and her extraordinary life, as revealed through the novel. I’ve never seen the point of much performance art and even after seeing a documentary on her work, my opinion wasn’t changed. But the artist and her work, as presented in this fictional/fact account, have made me reconsider. I’ll look at performance art through fresh eyes. This book is a great achievement for Heather Rose who was able to able to observe Abramovic’s work and research her life when she was Writer in Residence at Hobart’s Museum of Old and New Art (MoNA), providing connections to both Australia and New York. While much of the artist’s life as revealed in the book is fictional, it is based on fact. Abramovic approved the final version.

This year’s winner, The Museum of Modern Love by Heather Rose is no exception. A combination of fact and fiction, the novel is based on performance artist Marina Abramovic’s most celebrated work, The Artist is Present, which was held in New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 2010 over a period of 75 days with thousands attending as observers and participants. Abramovic sat in a chair, silent and unmoving for hours each day, as people were invited to sit across from her for as long as they wished. This simple act became transformative for many, resulting in enormous queues and placing an unimaginable physical and mental strain on Abramovic. The story of The Museum of Modern Love is told from the differing perspectives of a musician (the main character), a research student, an art teacher/ reviewer, a muse, a ghost (the artist’s mother) and the artist herself. This device works very

Sport DRAGON’S BACKBONE

Leo Wiles, Eumundi

The Dragons Junior Rugby Union team based in Eumundi is indeed fortunate to have a dedicated and passionate group of adults that make up the coaches and managers of the four teams who compete on a weekly basis in the Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby Union competition. This group of volunteers give up their time to ensure that all of the players at the club enjoy developing their skills in a safe and caring environment. The teams can be seen training at the Eumundi Showgrounds every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, except during school holidays, from February to late August. Matches are played from March to August on Saturday mornings at venues up and down the Sunshine Coast from Maleny to Caloundra to Noosa and all clubs in between. All the Dragons staff are appropriately accredited and never seem to tire of bringing out the best in all the players in their respective teams. They are: Under 7s coach and manager Luke Youd; Under 8’s coaches

Bryan Eaton and Alain Samarcq and managers Dan and Margo Sparks; U10’s coaches Richard Boully and Dan McGhee and manager Megan Nurse; U13’s coaches Barry Hocking and Dan Breen and manager Ross Marks. Club president Doug Toms has no hesitation in stating that without these members of the club’s volunteer staff, the Eumundi Dragons would not be able to enjoy the high esteem that they are held within the Sunshine Coast Rugby community. Go The Dragons!

Health EUMUNDI’S TOUGH MUDDERS

Sam Williams, personal trainer, Eumundi

Eumundi Fitness recently had an awesome team of 11 members complete 10km of very muddy, hilly terrain with 12 arduous obstacles in this year’s Tough Mudder competition - it was epic! There was nothing like it! Thousands of competitors from across the Coast competed in this massive fitness event at Woodford.

Each member of our team had their commitments: family, work, sickness - and even injuries to overcome - and yet they did it. The commitment to a fitness goal, the dedication it takes to stay focused, and the absolute satisfaction and sense of achievement when you have completed it is something you never thought possible. It breathes confidence and encourages self-belief - you can achieve anything in life you set your mind to.

This group of strong women also set a wonderful example for their kids, partners, friends and community. Some of the team members also used the event to raise money and awareness for Neurofibromatosis: a rare skin condition which affects only 1 in 3000. It can affect hearing, eyesight, cause cataracts, muscle wasting, and skin tumours. As trainer and team captain, I was inspired to do this challenge to raise funds after learning about a local grandmother, Wendy Walker, whose grandson Steven and daughter Lynn suffer from this awful condition. The team raised nearly $1000. The crew are already planning the next challenge. Want to join us? eumundiaquaticcentre.com.au/ gymnasium/

Health YOGA FOR KIDS

Michelle Collier, Doonan

Kid’s yoga has many benefits. Not only does it enhance flexibility and strength but also develops focus, concentration and refines balance and coordination. Yoga helps children see the beauty and light within themselves, thereby boosting their self-confidence. It allows them to feel more comfortable with their bodies, and helps them get in touch with who they are inside. A child who learns yoga, mindfulness and relaxation will be developing essential skills for a lifetime of health and wellness in mind, body and spirit. Yoga provides children with

a healthy way to express and balance their emotions. It improves posture through developing core strength, assisting students to sit comfortably for long periods of time. Yoga also helps build confidence and self-esteem, sharpens their listening skills and social and emotional learning. Above all, it involves learning how to cultivate greater selfawareness, awareness of others and the world around them, and then reaping the benefits of that awareness. It promotes a more relaxed and comfortable state of being – giving students an awareness of the present; the The first time I stepped onto a yoga mat I wasn’t sure what to expect. I sat silently peeking through squinted eyes at the other students sitting in stillness with a lit candle placed in the middle. After a few minutes the teacher spoke, “Today is the best day of your life...” Not sure what he meant, I was intrigued. He spoke with such

basic requirement for learning. Yoga (meaning union or yoke) began over 5000 years ago and is the practice of accessing and integrating all aspects of our true nature – body, mind, spirit. It is a science of inner wellbeing, not a religion. It teaches us how to remove our physical and mental problems and improve our attitude towards life. Living yoga means to aspire to live each moment, on and off the mat, centred in the calmness of the soul. passion and depth that I wanted to know more. Not long after I took a leap of faith, left my stressful job, and followed my heart’s desire. In 2015 I became a Registered Hatha Yoga Teacher. I will always be a student of yoga now and deeply grateful for the loving wisdom my teachers have shared with me.

Michelle is offering two weekly kid’s yoga classes (ages 5-7 & 8-12) at Eumundi State School. Classes will begin on the first Tuesday in Term Three, cost $10 per class and will be for the duration of each term. Any questions: 0424 875 342. mindfulyoganoosa.com.au. They have not only taught me the physical benefits of yoga: improve flexibility and build strength, but have also instilled in me that love, joy, peace and heartfelt gratitude are all attainable. I seek to help students thrive in life by nurturing the body, mind and spirit, allowing students to step off the mat feeling refreshed, nourished and balanced.

Hearty chicken pot pie Sacha HMcL, Eumundi

One of the best things about winter has to be hearty, comfort food. I love making soups, stews and pies this time of year – let alone a pudding or crumble. This chicken pot pie recipe was taught to me by my first share housemate. This pie has become a winter staple for my family (it lasts for two meals), and it’s fab for rustic dinner parties (making your own short crust pastry takes the pie to a whole new level). If you double the recipe you can make mini pies too using muffin tins. These freeze really well for work lunches or emergency meals. This recipe was never written down (until now) so isn’t an exact science. Add more or less as you see fit. Serve with steamed or roasted winter veggies – roast pumpkin is a scrummy pairing – and gravy. Ingredients • 3 free range chicken breasts, diced (can also mix in thigh) • 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced • ½ small turmeric root, thinly sliced (optional) • small bunch of thyme, finely chopped • 1 stick celery, sliced (optional) • 2 carrots, sliced • 2 leeks, thinly sliced • 8 large button mushrooms, sliced • 3 cups good quality chicken stock • 2 tblsp plain (wholemeal) flour • Pinch white pepper • Pinch of sea salt • Corn from a cooked cob (optional)

• Nob of butter • Olive oil • 3 sheets of puff pastry (make your own if you want to be fancy) • 1 egg, beaten Method Defrost (make) pastry, keeping covered with a tea towel so it doesn’t dry out. Preheat oven to 180 ° C. In a large, heavy based pot fry diced leek with some of the butter and a splash of olive oil. Once glassy and beginning to golden, remove from pot. Add another splash of olive oil (if needed), then cook diced chicken. Once coloured on one side, turn and add thyme, garlic and turmeric (optional). Once chicken is cooked through, add

celery, carrots and mushrooms. When chicken begins to colour, add cooked leek and stir through. Pour chicken stock over ingredients until just covering (you may have stock left over). Once bubbling, turn heat down to a simmer and season with white pepper and sea salt. Allow to simmer for approx. five mins before adding 1 tblsp flour. Stir to thicken and remove any lumps – if sauce is still quite thin, add more flour and stir in – if too thick add any extra stock. Remove from the heat to cool slightly. Grease a pie dish with butter (you can also use a small baking dish), then cover with a sheet of pastry – right up to the rim leaving a decent edge. Cut

pieces off the second sheet to fill any spaces. Using a pastry brush (or fork), spread a little egg mix along pastry rim. Pour chicken mixture into pie case. Place the third sheet of pastry over the top. Twist the pastry lid and case together right around the edge, then cut two slits into the lid. Use any leftover pastry to decorate the top, then paint lid with egg mix. Place in the oven at the bottom to cook. After 15 mins, turn the pie and check the lid isn’t burning - reduce heat if need be. Check again after ten mins, then every five. Once the top is beautifully golden, serve with winter vegetables and gravy.

Living JOBS OF THE FUTURE

Jenny Brice, Eumundi

When looking to the future, Australia’s job market is looking a little like Marilyn Monroe’s hourglass figure – lots of jobs at the top and at the bottom, with slim pickings in between. Jobs that support the rich will expand: event managers, personal assistants, masseuses, personal chefs, personal trainers, children tutors, pet care. Middle level jobs such as loan officer, receptionists, paralegal, retail sales, taxi drivers and chauffeurs, journalists and fast food chefs will likely disappear. The top three growth industries by 2025 are likely to be those working with new technologies. Also health care and social assistance and aged care are expected to be huge. But Nano technology is a huge growth industry, employing over one million people in the USA since 2000. Other growth industries include: • Psychology • Professional, scientific and technical services • Renewables - employing both scientists and technicians. • Space technology • Digital marketing • Education and training • New technology trainers • Fill the gap apprentices There will also be many new jobs created that look nothing like those that exist today. These roles are not replacing old ones but are novel, requiring skills and training that have no precedents. An example of this is artificial intelligence (AI). Any idea when the idea of AI first started? It isn’t a new concept - its storytelling roots go as far back as Greek antiquity. But in the modern era Alan Turing, British mathematician and WWII

codebreaker, is widely credited as being one of the first people to come up with the idea of machines that think in 1950. The rise of the personal computer in the ‘80s sparked even more interest in machines that think. Chinese investors are now pouring money into AI focused startups and the Chinese government has signalled a commitment to seeing the country’s AI industry thrive by pledging to invest about $15 billion by 2018. An AI job of the future could be empathy trainers who will teach AI systems to show compassion or appropriate levels of emotions. Another possibility is algorithm forensics analysts responsible for holding any algorithm accountable for its results. For example, if the algorithm chose a certain person for a job and they did not work out, the Forensic Analysis would work out how the algorithm went wrong. Also a future AI job will be language tone trainers who teach machines (like Apple’s Siri) to detect different inferences in voices and react appropriately. Yahoo engineers have developed an algorithm that can detect sarcasm on social media and websites with an accuracy of at least 80%. Another job will be machine relations manager who will be responsible for algorithms that perform well. It’s a whole new world out there and it’s important to keep informed. jennybrice.com.au 15

N E W WA R N I N G S TAT I O N S F O R HINTERLAND Noosa Council has awarded a $200,000 contract to build five new flood warning stations in the Noosa hinterland. The new stations will provide real-time creek height and rainfall data from sites in Cooroy, Lake Macdonald, Pomona and Kin Kin. Council’s Local Disaster Management Group selected the sites in consultation with the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) and Main Roads. The stations are solar-powered and built to withstand high winds, heavy rain, floodwater and earthquakes. They use radio signals to transmit creek height and rainfall information. Disaster Management Coordinator Alan Rogers said the new stations would be invaluable tools. “Council’s hydrologist will be able to translate the data that the flood gauges provide into useful information to help us predict when flooding will close roads, and for how long,” he said.

1. Age: Breeds will stop laying at different ages. Hybrid chooks, such as the Isa Brown, will generally stop from 18 months. A purebred may lay for five years or more. 2. Diet: Loads of veggies may seem like a good idea but sometimes it can reduce egg production. A layer food has the exact portions of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Save the treats for afternoons so your hens fill up on their layer food first. 3. Season: Hybrid hens are bred to lay all year. Purebreds have a natural instinct to reduce laying - or even stop laying - during winter when daylight hours are shorter. 4. Moulting: Losing feathers is a normal annual process. It can be stressful as it takes a lot of nutrients to regrow new feathers. Purebreds will usually stop laying during this time and put all their

energy into feather production. 5. Location: Chickens can decide to lay elsewhere, other than the beautiful nesting box you have prepared for them. If they run free range throughout the day you may need to go on an egg hunt to find the rogue nest. 6. Parasites: Lice, mites and worms can cause discomfort and anaemia. This can lead to fewer eggs, stop laying and even cause death. 7. Health: Unwell chooks stop laying because of minimal feed and water intake. 8. Stress: This can be caused by the pecking order, a dog, children chasing them, frequent loud noises, parasites, unsuitable perches, nesting areas that aren’t ideal or anything else that a chook would deem to be not desirable.

COMMUNITY GARDEN Let’s get digging! Last year, the EDCA Community Garden Sub Committee was formed and began the task of designing a community garden within the area leased to EDCA by SCRC. After many fortnightly meetings, the group managed to come up with an initial concept plan prepared by Janet and Mick Millington, with plenty of design help from other members of the group such as Georgie Brachold, Anja Morgan, Bridget Bygott, Brian Jane, Georgia Brown, and Billy Mizzi. The team took their plans

16

Louise Formosa & Anja Morgan, Eumundi

to EDCA and were supported in taking the plans to Council for landlord’s consent. In September last year they submitted the plans which had to be distributed to a number of different departments in Council for comment. On 9 June, Louise Formosa received written confirmation that the community garden proposal had been approved on the proviso that a number of conditions were met including

9. Theft: Do you have a thief in the area? I’m not talking a human thief (although possible) but crows, kookaburras, goannas etc. All of these creatures love eggs, and once they know where the eggs are, they will return at a set time every day. Look for broken shells or stand guard and observe. 10. Egg Eater: Once a chook discovers how tasty an egg is, they may turn into a full-on egg eater. When feeding chooks egg shell as a calcium source, always grind up so it no longer looks like an egg. poultreepark.com

matters such as entry variations and car parking layout. We have centred our garden design around accessibility, community inclusion and fostering relationships between people with disabilities, different cultures and different generations. There will be great opportunities for our community to share, learn and connect here. Cont’d on pg 18

N atu re N otes S E C R E T L I F E O F S I LV E R F I S H Insects make up well over 80% of the world’s animal species. These are just the ones known to science, but there are many more waiting to be described or even discovered. That is because so many of them are tiny, cryptic or insignificant. The ones that come to our notice are the ones that are large, venomous, scary or harmful to our crops and other goods. But many of the tiny species have such alien anatomies and grotesque lifestyles that they are worth a really close look. One such order of insects is the Thysanura – the tassel-tails. They are shaped like a fish and have silvery scales which led to the common name of silverfish. But they definitely don’t swim - although they prefer moist places. They’re also extremely difficult to catch by hand: they are very quick, can change direction rapidly and flatten their bodies to avoid being gripped. They are also very small and their scales make them extremely slippery. Silverfish - Ctenolepisma longicaudata, meaning combscaled with long tails - are amongst the most ancient of insects. Their fossil remains go

Kon Hepers, Eumundi

way back to the Silurian period in the Paleozoic era some 400 million years ago. They do not have wings and never have. Other wingless insects such as fleas have at least one winged ancestor showing up in the fossil record – not so the silverfish. At the tapered down tail end of their abdomen they have three filament-like appendages called cerci used as sensory organs. The pair of cerci on either side has been adapted by some other arthropods into strong pincers used for attack and defence and to subdue prey. Earwigs and centipedes are good examples. Silverfish are completely defenceless and harmless. That is, harmless in terms of biting or stinging but more than capable of harming our belongings. At the broader end their heads are equipped with chewing mouth-parts and their diet is composed of mainly dextrin in starchy foods and adhesives such as book-binding glue, paper, wallpaper, carpet and some textiles. They produce a special enzyme to digest cellulose. Although only up to 25mm in length and almost

blind (some don’t have eyes at all), they can do considerable damage and are declared household pests. You can find them at the back of bookshelves, in boxes of old photographs, in dark corners of the garage - wherever the vacuum cleaner isn’t used too much. They often get trapped in the empty bathtub which is the one place where you can catch them. Outside the house their habitat is under bark and leaf mould, although we have never seen any in the wild. Silverfish can live for a few years and can go a year without eating. We think they make up for it when the going is good. They can reproduce before they are mature and have this weird courtship ritual. When boy meets girl they remain head to head for about 30 minutes. Then the boy suddenly runs away, hotly pursued by the girl. When she catches up (he probably fakes being lame) they remain side by side while he produces little

I saw this huge, colourful moth in our patio. It has a wingspan of about 10cm. Unfortunately, after doing some research, I’ve discovered it’s a Fruit-piercing Moth (Eudocima fullonia), an exotic species and a major agricultural pest. These moths feed at night by penetrating the skin of ripe or ripening fruit with their strong proboscis and sucking the juice. I have no idea if these moths are common or not, but it’s the first time I’ve ever seen one. Shanna Bignell, Belli Park.

bundles of sperm which the girl picks up, then lays her eggs on the ground. The emerging young (called nymphs) are tiny replicas of the adults. As they grow they moult many times to accommodate the increases in size. When a silverfish needs to “remoisturise” its body, it has the ability to absorb water through the walls of its rectum and so “drinks” with its bottom. Quite unbecoming! Silverfish are an example of the huge variety of insects with amazing lifestyles that are intricate and interesting and always worth a closer look. *For this article we referenced Michelle Gleeson’s excellent book Miniature Lives. Michelle is co-founder of Bugs Ed, an educational company that presents hands-on insect workshops to schools and other organisations.

Kids marquee and local artists are running activities focussed on Landcare for the land and water of the Noosa Biosphere. There’s a catch and release Bass fishing competition at Mary River Cod Park with great prizes.

Where do you find your inspiration? My grandma, Jan, inspired me as she was always cooking and knitting and doing craft. She was the person who taught me all of these things. I was never a very academic so I would spend most of my time creating instead.

Have you ever seen a fairy? Fairies usually disappear when humans come into the garden but, when I was little, in my garden just before the sun set, I glimpsed two out of the corner of my eye...

Throughout the day a free boat trip will taxi across the lake from the Gardens to the Cod Park hatchery. The Amphitheatre will showcase

Cont’d from page 16 The team had a celebratory drink at the Imperial last Friday and visited the site last Sunday to start mapping out the future gardens and working on the next steps to make the dream come alive. We need to properly measure out the site, mark out our first garden beds and stage the design carefully so that we can start building a dream garden. Fortnightly working bees at the Scout Hut site will now

resume every second Sunday of the month from 10am. We’re excited now to get our hands dirty make the dream a reality - come and play with us!
