Notes Editor’s note ... Farming in the hinterland is still a big part of our region’s identity. However we’ve seen significant farming land divvied up for semirural housing over the decades and making ends meet has always been a challenge for most Qld farmers. But the dream of having a small working farm has a strong pull and is the reason many young families are actually now moving to our region.

Over the past three months you’ve probably noticed much action in the area of the markets known as the Terraces - as our $1.5million redevelopment gathers pace. Business H I N T E R L A N D E R S S H O W C A S E D AT R E G I O N A L F L AV O U R S Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with Visit Sunshine Coast and Food & Agribusiness Network (FAN), sponsored the Flavours of the Sunshine Coast marketing stall and menu at Brisbane’s annual Regional Flavours food and wine event. FAN general manager Emma Greenhatch said the event was an opportunity for businesses to showcase products to tens of thousands of new consumers and drive food tourism to the increasing number of farm gates. “Ultimately, [it’s] about raising awareness and we anticipate exciting new business opportunities will come about for those participating,” Emma enthused. Nine producers, including Original Eumundi Market stallholder Petra Hughes of Ten Acres farm, represented the Sunshine Coast at the event which had over 100,000 visitors.

Petra shared it was fabulous to see such an interest in regional produce. “I think Sunshine Coast producers were definitely well received - Regional Flavours has become a platform for

innovation, where producers trial, or introduce products and where visitors get an opportunity to connect with the producers and discover what’s being produced in the region,” Petra said. Ten Acres is an artisan bakery and farm that sold 350 loaves of sourdough and buckets of marmalade over the two days. Petra was also at the event as a representative for sunshinecoastregionalfood.com. au – an online food directory showcasing the Coast. “I try to promote and support [local producers] wherever I can to help create more awareness for

Sunshine Coast foods,” Petra explained. Belli Park chef and bush food champion Peter Wolfe was also at the event representing this region. Peter ran the stall’s menu hub as well as cooking a local reef fish dish on the Queensland Taste stage. Peter can also be found at the Original Eumundi Markets at his stall Cedar Creek Farm which specialises in jams, chutneys and native produce. Eumundi’s Templeton Ginger was another local farm that supported the event by supplying produce for the menu hub dishes.

Business O P E N I N G A FA R M D O O R I N T H E H I N T E R L A N D When my husband Pete and I bought our Belli Park property in 2006, it was derelict with run down eroded land. But we saw the potential of the aspect, water and location. We set up our business Hinterland Feijoas in 2007. After researching, we had bravely decided to go with a new niche crop – feijoas. A sub-tropical fruit from South America, feijoas are huge in New Zealand and I grew up with them on our family farm. We knew that we’d need to develop our own market, so aimed at having a farm gate from the start. Pete and I believed we could attract people to us by offering an organic, niche product, developing direct relationships with our customers, and growing as the market grew. We’re big on planning! The first five years were devoted to planting and growing fruit. Then five to 10 years were aimed at developing the market and our offerings, including our farm shop and Myrtle the food caravan this year. Our next five years will be consolidating our

offering, then in 15-20 year’s… semi-retirement! At first, our farm gate was basic people wandering about, buying boxes of fruit and chutneys from a table. Each year we added something; tea and coffee, gelato, mini ponies, goats, more chairs.

Eventually we decided a garage conversion was the right place for the shop, with the food van/ commercial kitchen separate. We considered lots of options all fully costed. We also listened to customer feedback.

Community L A N D C L E A R E D AT PA R K A large parcel of privately owned land that buffers the Eumundi Conservation Park (ECP) near the Eumundi Wreckers was cleared last week of native trees and vegetation. A barbed wire fence has now been erected and the area divided by lot signs. The clearing has occurred on land alongside the park’s Figbird track that linked Seib Rd to the Wreckers. When asked for comment, Cr Steve Robinson’s Division 9 office explained that it is a State owned reserve. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) confirmed it had given the owner of the neighbouring private land permission to construct a fence on the boundary between the ECP property and the private property lot 153. QPWS has also given the property owner permission to create a fire break running along the fence line of both properties. The management of firebreaks is the responsibility of the land owner (QPWS) and clearing of

native vegetation is regulated by legislation. There are exemptions for the clearing of firebreaks: clearing to establish or maintain a necessary firebreak to protect infrastructure (other than fences, roads and tracks) to a maximum width of 20m or 1.5 times the height of the tallest adjacent tree, whichever is the greater.* Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade First Officer Duncan Sayers said, “They’ve cleared about the minimum you would expect for a fire management track on their side of the fence. “The amount cleared is a tiny percentage of the overall land area in the Conservation Park, however it’s the chipping away from all sides of these natural assets that risks us waking up one day to see it all gone.” Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade said they weren’t notified of the work, and QPWS weren’t obligated to do so. *qld.gov.au/environment/land/ vegetation/exemptions

R O TA RY G I V E S S H A D E Eumundi Rotary recently presented the Eumundi State School Enviro Centre garden with a $2500 cheque to assist with the purchase of a sun shade. The shelter is needed to provide shade and a safe place for Science & Permaculture teacher Jon Gemmell and the school children to store seedlings as pests have been eating them. This will enhance the learning of propagation skills and the joy of growing a bountiful vegetable garden and orchard. Principal Mick Connors said the shelter has now been ordered but will take around a month to be delivered to the

school. “With the assistance of Janet Millington and Greg Molyneux, Rotary have been very supportive,” Mr Connors shared.

Community EUMUNDI POLICE UPDATE Sgt Brooke Flood, Eumundi Police 5442 8222 We recently farewelled our fabulous Administration Officer Fiona ‘Fi’ Crothers. Fi is starting a new adventure with her husband Dave in South Australia. We were all very sad to loose Fi after serving Eumundi for the past four years, but wish her and Dave all the best. Liz Martin will be temporarily filling this position until it has been permanently filled. This will require a change to our usual office hours. The station office hours are now 8am-4pm Tuesday, Friday and every second Wednesday. As always, if you require urgent police assistance for serious matters call 000 - police are ALWAYS available in these situations. On 8 July, a 46 year old Maroochydore man was intercepted on Cresent Road, Eumundi for an random breath test. The man provided a breath alcohol concentration of 0.138%. He was immediately

suspended from driving and issued with a Notice to Appear in Noosa Heads Magistrates court. On the July 15, a 28 year old Nambour man was intercepted on Duke Rd, Doonan for a random breath test. The man provided a breath alcohol concentration of 0.123%. He was immediately suspended from driving and issued with a Notice to Appear in Nambour Magistrates court. Between the 26 June and 7 July, a 40ft green and blue coloured shipping container was removed from a property at Eumundi-Noosa Rd, Doonan. E U M U N D I C WA A G M Eumundi Branch of the Qld CWA held their Annual General Meeting (AGM) last Tuesday 18 July. The event was well attended by local, regional and state branch members. The AGM highlighted to members and visitors just how relevant CWA is in rural and regional Qld today. The President’s report listed the activities of our branch in providing: a meeting place for local groups; participation in State events; our craft project; and a $10,000 donation to provide bursaries to two rural students for the Rural Youth Orchestra. State President and Eumundi Branch member Joy Coulton congratulated our Branch including the efforts of Babara Robinson - on the success of our international study of Nepal. The quality and quantity (346 entries) indicated how relevant the knowledge was to ESS students. Next year Germany will be the country of study. The big surprise was that our President Dell Ford was given the CWA Full Service Badge, awarded to long serving and huge contributors to CWA causes. Dell has been a member for 47 years, holding positions at State, Regional and Branch levels. She was caught off guard by the announcement, having had no idea of the high esteem in which she is held, and was overcome as members cheered a woman who has done so much for Qlders.

Once again, our Eumundi Branch made a donation to support this work which is very much in line with their own objectives. Mari Wen announced the plans for the branch to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of CWA in Eumundi. The luncheon for 50 guests will be held on 14 November and the ladies have been working on a facelift of their much loved Hall in anticipation of the event. Discover Eumundi will work with the group to build up a pictorial history of the organisation leading up to the Anniversary. CWA is a significant force in regional and rural Qld and the ladies welcome new members, young and old, who would like to make a difference, share companionship and contribute to the community. Meeting times are listed in the Green calendar and visitors are always welcome at meetings. Mari Wen ensures the goodies look as good as they taste.

The Eumundi Dragons recently purchased a new marquee for their home games with funds from Cr Rogerson from Div 10 of the Sunshine Coast Council. Belli Park Community Hall is In the 2016 Census, the median age of people in Doonan was 45 years. Children aged 0 - 14 years made up 20% of the population, and people aged 65 years and over made up 17%. 59% were married and 11% were either divorced or separated, with 12.6% listed as in a de facto relationship. 29% were attending an educational institution. Of these, 36% were in primary school, 28% in secondary and 14% in a tertiary or technical institution. The most common ancestries in Doonan were: English 32%, Australian 24%, Scottish 10%, Irish 9% and German 4.5%. 52% of people had both parents born in Australia and 27% of people had both parents born overseas. Of people aged 15 years and over, 79% did unpaid domestic work, 29% provided care for children and 10% assisted for family members or others due to a disability, long term illness or problems related to old age. In the year before the Census, 24.0% of people did voluntary work through an organisation or a group. Of people who did unpaid domestic work, 29.8% worked 5 to 14 hours, 17%

worked 15 to 29 hours and 12% worked 30 hours or more. Of the families in Doonan, 47% were couple families with children, 43% were couple families without children and 9% were one parent families. In Doonan, 90% of private dwellings were occupied and 10% were unoccupied. Of occupied private dwellings in Doonan, 99% were separate houses, 0.8% were semidetached, row or terrace houses, townhouses etc; none were flats or apartments. Of private dwellings 3% had 1 bedroom, 6% had 2 bedrooms and 34% had 3 bedrooms. The average number of bedrooms was 3.6. The average household size was 3 people. 37% of homes were owned outright, 47% were owned with a mortgage and 13% were rented. The Eumundi School of Rock Showband have been rehearsing hard every week since the 20 June at the Imperial Hotel’s Bunker. These kids, who come from schools across the region, were part of last year’s Eumundi School of Rock program. The group are preparing for their next big gig as part of the Horizon festival where they’ll launch this year’s SOR students.

Kids ESS MARKET IS THE BUSINESS It’s a big day on the Eumundi State School calendar and after weeks of preparation, creating market business plans, brainstorming, sourcing and pricing stock, Year six students were open for business last Thursday. Principle Mick Connors explained the Open for Business learning program gives children insight into starting a market stall/ micro business. Mick shared that this year the focus was on learning experiences and fun activities with Year sixers showcasing skills to their peers. The morning was a wonderful success with ‘customers’ (children from other years) having to choose how to spend their money. There were many highlights such as: Funky Farm, The Rubik’s Gang, Dream Catcher Fun, Bookworm City, Zentangle, The Bike Guy, and Shoot-a-Goal. But the standout had to be the free Know-It-All Knowledge Stall, “Come with a question and we answer it!” Food stalls were big hits too with most selling out of stock.

Sport EQUESTRIAN MANE EVENT Celebrate with the community at the inaugural Sunshine Coast Mane Event at the Sunshine Coast RDA Equestrian Centre, 2 Monak Rd, North Arm, on Sunday 30 July, 8.30am to 5pm. Operations Manager Coralie Kedzlie said the day will be a fantastic opportunity for some old fashioned family fun in the country. “We have put together a very full program of entertainment, food, displays and demonstrations with lots of activities and fun things to do.” Coralie shared. We never seem to be able to keep up with the tissue supply in our house at this time of year, due to the seemingly endless round of runny noses. So why when we have a cold do we seem to produce so much mucus? Mucus is made by the mucosal glands that line the body’s respiratory tract, which include the nose, the throat and the lungs. When people sneeze, mucus comes out from the mucosal glands lining the nasal passages. Only a very small amount of mucus is produced in the sinuses. The respiratory tract produces more than a litre of mucus a day, and when things are working properly, your body is pretty good at getting rid of it. The mucus in your nose, is moved to the back of the nasal passages and then into the throat by tiny hairs on nasal cells called cilia. From there, you swallow it. Mucus acts as a sort of flypaper, trapping unwanted substances like bacteria and dust before they can get into the body. Mucus is sticky and thick, as it needs to have a viscosity to it that will trap things. However, mucus is more than just sticky goo. It also contains antibodies that help the body recognise

invaders like bacteria and viruses, enzymes that kill the invaders it traps, protein to make the mucus gooey and stringy and very inhospitable, and a variety of cells. It is a common misconception that yellow or green mucus is a sign that you have an infection. However the yellow or green hue isn’t due to bacteria. When you have a cold, your immune system sends white blood cells called neutrophils to the area. These cells contain a greenishcoloured enzyme, and in large numbers they can turn the mucus the same colour. It is possible to have perfectly clear mucus and have an ear or sinus infection. However if you do have an infection, you will also likely have other symptoms, such as congestion, fever, and pressure in your face, overlying the sinuses. The three most common reasons for extra mucus are the

common cold, sinusitis (infection or inflammation of the air filled spaces inside the face bones), and hayfever. Each of these conditions causes the lining of the nose to swell up, and to produce extra mucus to flush away infection, irritants or allergens. Both the swelling and extra mucus lead to nasal congestion. This is when the narrowed passages increase the effort of breathing through the nose. Another common misconception that is often reported is that milk increases the production of mucus when you have a cold. A 2005 review of studies concluded that there was no link between milk consumption and mucus production or asthma. In one study, participants infected with the common cold virus reported symptoms of increased mucus production after drinking milk, but when their mucus production was actually measured there was no statistical difference. In another study, there was no difference in the sensation experienced between drinking soy milk and cow’s milk. This doesn’t mean

people don’t experience the sensation, but rather that there is no actual increase in mucus production. The sensation could be due to the texture and viscosity of milk. So is blowing our nose the best way of controlling excess mucus? The current evidence indicates that blowing your nose to reduce the build-up of mucus is the best advice, however it is important to do it correctly. It is in this department that our footballers have something to teach us. You will often see them on the football field doing the onefinger-one-nostril salute. This is actually the correct method. Very high pressures are generated in the nasal cavities when both nostrils are blown at the same time, which could aggravate bronchial infections. The mucous in your nose contains bacteria, so if you close both nostrils while blowing, the mucous is more likely to go deeper into the nasal cavities than onto the tissue. Blow only one nostril at a time. If you do it correctly, all you’ll hear is a rush of air, not a honk.

Health YOUNG WOMEN GET ACTIVE PROGRAM Noosa Council are currently researching what sorts of activities young women between 18 and 24 would be keen to take part in to get out and active. Council is developing a new low-cost program next year aimed at young women who are struggling to stay active. Council Community Development Officer Amanda Tie said, “Statistics tell us that for a range of reasons including work, family and study, young women don’t get enough physical activity.” Ms Tie explained the Noosa region currently has no physical activity programs specifically tailored to young women. Council has received a $10,000 grant from State Government’s Get Out, Get Active program to fill that gap. “Local gym staff [told] us women of this age group are also under-represented among their members,” Ms Tie said.

I have been a strict vegetarian for almost 20 years. However, I gave birth to a ravenous meat eater. Over the last few years as he’s grown I’ve had to do lots of adjusting with menu planning. There have been times when the idea of cooking two separate meals, one for the vegetarians and one for the meat eaters, just seemed ridiculous. So I’ve learnt to plan meals that can be vegetarian, but with a meat addition. My strict vego principles have softened, but my love of vegetables and vegetarian meals - and my belief in the health benefits of this choice for me and the planet - remains. I know for many households menu planning for fussy eaters, and different dietary requirements for different family members, can be a struggle. My solution is finding meals where different ingredients can be added or subtracted without losing the integrity of the dish. Here’s to compromise, trying new things and healthy balanced eating. Method

Ingredients • 2 tblsp olive oil

• 120 gm roast capsicum, torn

1. Finely chop onion and garlic.

• 1 Spanish onion, finely chopped

• ½ eggplant, diced and fried in oil until soft

• 1 garlic clove, finely chopped

• 1 tblsp coarsely chopped oregano

2. Heat oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat, add onion and garlic, and sauté until just tender (2-3 minutes).

• 100 ml dry white wine • 250 ml (1 cup) vegetable stock

• 1 tblsp thyme, chopped • 1 tblsp parsley, chopped

• 400 gm can tomatoes

• 2 tsp sugar

• 800 gm canned white beans, drained, rinsed

• Salt & pepper

5. Stir beans, capsicum and cooked eggplant into tomato mixture, simmer to warm through. 6. Stir in oregano, thyme and parsley and season.

3. Deglaze pan wine and reduce by half (1min).

7. Spoon hot white bean, capsicum and oregano over cooked couscous.

4. Add stock, tomato, sugar then simmer for 15-20 mins, or until thickened.

• Land Zoning – Is your proposition an allowable activity? Use Council zoning maps to check. • Road access - Factors that limit visitor access means you can’t have a farm gate. We already had a turning lane off our main road, plus a shop, and eco-resort, so new commercial activity precedents were already in place. Visibility on a main road may be great but not if people can’t safely turn onto your property! Our road also has bitumen. Dirt roads equal dust, maintenance, and no hire car access! • Community Amenity - How will your business affect your neighbours? Will it add or detract from their lifestyle? Think about how noise, traffic, or events, will affect them. We already had commercial activity on our street, but our farm gate added another element - luckily our neighbour’s love us - no need to go in to Eumundi for coffee now! We also stock organic basics at lower than retail prices as a community service: eggs, milk, bread, cheese, cleaning products, soap, even toilet paper! • Aspect and water availability - both for growing produce and visitor appeal. People will want to sit and enjoy a lovely view or garden.

If you have a farm gate you’re letting people into your lives. If you are not open to this then it’s not the right path for you. • Develop as many income streams as possible. • You need to be determined, multi-skilled and passionate to grow something, make something and then sell it! • The business must reflect your values – this is super important in a farm gate as you are literally inviting people into your home! • Be adaptable as nothing stays the same long. Change with the trends. • Make your intentions clear – we intend visitors to feel at home and part of our family. This is the feedback we get, so we know our intentions are reflected perfectly.
