Notes Editor’s note ... You sure are a busy region – hard to keep up with all of your goings-on – let alone fit a fortnight’s worth of happenings into one issue. Designer Lil and I have tried to highlight as many as possible but there’s just sooo many good photos and not enough room. The only thing missing from the Eumundi hinterland over the last fortnight was rain – bar one dramatic shower on the Friday during the Eumundi State School Fair. I’m thinking we may have to have a rainmaking festival. Perhaps call in a Shaman, or get Tiddalik to laugh, or invite Wuluwaid (the rain God of Arnhem Land) to come down for a holiday. We need rain. Tanks are empty and the ground is dry…perfect bushfire conditions…

The Terraces - our $1.5million redevelopment is about to open! The quality of workmanship by local builder Toobella Homes is fantastic as is the level of architectural detail by Guymer Bailey. This major work will be home for our famous EDCA and EHA markets (on Wednesdays and Saturdays respectively), and provide a wonderful public space for our community on non-market days, with lovely gardens, dwell space and opportunities for other community events from time to time. The funding for this major work is being shared between Sunshine Coast Council, EHA, EDCA and Experience Eumundi and we are looking forward to welcoming visitors to this beautiful The Terraces re-development nears completion space for many years to come.

TECHNOLOGY YOU NEED TO KNOW AS A HINTERLAND BUSINESS
Around 150 Eumundi locals and business owners turned out for the exclusive evening launch of the Imperial Hotel’s Eumundi Brewery recently. The re-opening of the once thriving craft brewery was much anticipated with festive patrons trying both the new Eumundi Lager and mid-strength Eumundi Pale Ale. Head Brewer Chris Sheehan said this is just the beginning for the brews. “Our first Eumundi Brewery lager brew and pale ale brew came out right where we wanted them to, and we’re excited to share them.”
Sunshine Coast Council’s is holding a ‘Technology You Need To Know as a Hinterland Business’ workshop on Thursday 14 September, Maleny Community Centre, 12.30 – 4.30pm. Hear from local businesses who have already ‘gone digital’ and local specialist Yvette Adams from the Creative Collective. Whether you run accommodation, are a restaurateur, retailer or other business owner, this is designed to help hinterlanders learn more about available technology and how to implement it into their businesses. $50 with bookings essential.
Both beer brews are now on tap in the hotel, direct from the tanks in the brewery. Cont’d on pg 18

Council has contributed $669,000 towards this $1.45 million project with the balance being paid equally by Eumundi Combined Community Organisation (Experience Eumundi), Eumundi and District Community Association (EDCA) and Eumundi Historical Association (EHA). In addition to this, I’ve contributed $14,000 in divisional funding for the installation of a number of drinking fountains within the new terrace area, and a much needed tap for the amphitheatre. The new terraces will be safer and enable better accessibility. There’ll be new and improved lighting, better drainage, new retaining walls, garden areas and refurbished seating. The overall layout of the new terraces has been designed to better suit the market stalls. This has been a terrific effort by Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher, the General Manager of Experience
Eumundi (ECCO), EDCA, EHA, Council , local construction company Toobella Homes, landscape designers Guymer Bailey Architects, and structural engineers Callaghan and Toth - who all worked together on what has been an at times a challenging project. I’d also like to wholeheartedly thank existing stall vendors who’ve been so supportive and patient despite having to relocate while these works have been in progress. I’m really excited for all of them to move back into this new revitalised space! Horizon Festival It was great to be part of this year’s Horizon Festival and judge the busking competition in Dick Caplick Park. This was just one of a host of amazing events staged in Eumundi right across the weekend, including the Eumundi Art St, a Wearable Art competition, the Eumundi School of Rock and the Tastes of Eumundi. This year’s Horizon Festival was enormous, with more than 300 events staged right around the Sunshine Coast.
C O LT O N C O A L M I N E F I G H T COMES TO EUMUNDI Last Wednesday over 100 people from across the Sunshine Coast came together in Eumundi to discuss the potential impact of the New Hope Colton Coal Mine. The meeting held in the School of Arts Hall, was hosted by the Great Sandy Strait Saviours Speakers (GSSSS) who are concerned that this new open cut coal mine near
the Mary River poses a huge threat to the World Heritage listed Great Sandy Strait, the health of our waterways (and the animals living in them), plus the livelihood of 4000 locals. The mine has been approved by the State Govt without an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Cont’d on pg 7

Children up to 14 years made up 20% of the population and people aged 65 years and over made up 17%. Of people in Eerwah Vale, 50% were married, 16% in a de facto marriage, and 19% were either divorced or separated. 30% of people were attending an educational institution. Of these, 31% were in primary school, 16% in secondary school and 7% in a tertiary or technical institution. Cont’d from pg 6 Originally the size of the Colton mine was going to be larger, but the Govt refused the application and required an EIS be done. Colton then revised the mine size to just under the size required for the EIS. Speaker Dr Tanzi Smith explained to the audience that her main concern with the opencut mine (the coal is dug out in a big hole instead of tunnelled out deeper underground) is the billion litres of contaminated waste water every year that will be dumped directly into the Mary River. Dr Smith showed how this water then flows into the Great Sandy Strait marine waters off Fraser Island and then down into the Noosa waterways.

I hope everyone in the division reads the column this week. Share it with your friends, neighbours and everyone you know! Our community has been targeted by thieves and it is imperative that as a community we remain vigilant to ensure that our community is not targeted again. Sometime between 8am and 3pm on Thursday 24 August, a home in Viewland Dr, Doonan was broken into. Usually thieves breaking into houses take small items and cash so they can easily and quickly dispose of the items and reduce attention to themselves. In this case however, the thieves have stolen a large amount of property: televisions, electrical items, jewellery, tools, cash and cameras. This means the thieves had time and they had transport. A commonly used method by these thieves is to knock on doors and scope out to see if
anyone is home. If someone answers the door they will pretend to be looking for something, maybe a lost pet, directions or looking for a person. If no one answers the door, that’s when they break in and take everything they can get their dirty mitts on. In this case, the good news is the thieves have been caught. They are a pair from Brisbane who have broken into numerous residences around Noosa using this method. This is the first time our community has been targeted by this group. Be vigilant. If you see a suspicious vehicle, call police. If you have a person randomly knock on your door, call police. If you see any suspicious activity, call police. I would rather take 1,000 phone calls which turn out to be nothing than have another house broken into!
The most common responses for religion were no religion 42%, not stated 16%, Anglican 12%, Catholic 7% and Uniting Church 6%. The median weekly personal income for people aged 15 years and over in Eerwah Vale was $549.

that once the resources are exhausted, Colton is under no obligation to regenerate the area but can leave the hole in the ground. Local musicians performed a satirical song written about the issue to lighten the evening, before a panel discussion of the night’s speakers. GSSSS concluded the meeting with a call for an EIS to be done before the mine proceeds.

The Wearable Art Competition, held at Eumundi Square recently, was full of amazing talent and enjoyed by around 100 people. The level of skill and creativity was astounding, merging the stories of sustainability, creativity and community. Over 50 entrants came from all over the state to showcase their work, highlights included students from the East Coast TAFE, Eumundi State School and the Maleny River School. Included in the Show was a fashion parade of local Artisan Designer Labels, including Lara Stone Attire, Gosyma and Lilla by Fia, showing the beauty and versatility of sustainable clothing and the commitment of the community of the Sunshine Coast to really take action about environment. It was a fantastic morning, judges included the acclaimed artist Jandamarra Cadd and textile icon Janet De Boer.
The Australian independent women’s fashion label San Nizet has ebbed, flowed and been reinvented over the last 30 years, but the essence has remained the same‌contemporary with an edgy on trend eclectic style, beautifully cut and always from quality fabric. Sandra Nizette who is the designer and manufacturer of the label has moved between fashion and education all of her working life and now enjoys working from her shop on the Napier street frontage at Eumundi Square for the last two and a half years.

Eumundi is famous for its street performers. And busking has a rich history in these parts. Many a famous musician kick started their careers on a street corner in Eumundi with the hope of a good day’s pay accumulating in the old guitar case. So it was natural to include this ancient and honourable art as a special event at Art St – Horizon. Some of our region’s best buskers were in fine form in front of hard-marking adjudicators including Di Mills, Julie Hauritz, Cr Greg Rogeson and Eb & Flo - as they strutted their stuff in the street heats and finals in the
Bunker in a quest to discover our favourite street performer.
mention goes to the incredible dancer Conor Curran.
Finalists were the incredible Mum of 9 kids, Marama; Jaz McKenzie (15 years old but performed like a seasoned pro!); Grade Fiver Matilda Malone; and People’s Choice Rosey McKenzie – also just 11 years old. Special
Marama was deserving winner and received gigs at the Imperial Hotel valued at $750. All finalists also performed professionally at Tastes of Eumundi the following day.

SCHOOL OF ROCK IN SESSION FOR 2017 A great crowd of local families braved an out-of-theordinary cold night for the announcement of this year’s 20 scholarships for kids in grades three to eight and across a range of musical disciplines, for the 2017 Eumundi School of Rock (ESOR) program. The night of music at the Eumundi amphitheatre also included the North Arm State School Marimba Band; Thump; the Eumundi School of Rock Showband; and local Triple J star Alya. Last year’s inaugural ESOR program saw nineteen students aged from eight to thirteen years undertake more than three months of training
and mentoring from the School of Rock teachers. The musical program was the brainchild of multi awardwinning Doonan singer Katie Noonan who said the level of musical talent in the local community was astounding. “We have seen incredible outcomes for students including: improved self-esteem, stagecraft, musicianship and teamwork – all in a fun and supportive environment.” “I think our wonderful School of Rock teachers found the program just as rewarding and it is great to see them return along with some new faces,” Katie shared.

Kids CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL The Noosa Pengari Steiner School in Doonan always creates a beautiful children’s festival that showcases the lovely school grounds and school ethos - and this year was no exception. Along with lovely children’s craft - such as flower garland making, dream catcher weaving and wood working - there was an abundance of wholesome, tasty home cooked food. Local musos Band of Frequencies entertained a big crowd of happy families. The funky chai tent for the older kids and adults - with tasty, chai and musical entertainment – was a real highlight too.

Sport E U MU NDI NETBALL CLUB’ S SE A SON Fiona Bastow, Eumundi Eumundi Netball Club’s unofficial motto of “fun, fitness, friends and family” was well and truly upheld at its end-of-season celebration on the Noosa River foreshore recently. After a long and busy season it seemed both parents and players were ready to relax and enjoyed catching up over a sausage sizzle. Players were thrilled to receive a trophy, a first for many, acknowledging their terrific sportsmanship and development throughout the year. Season wrap-up. Our Year 6 team, Eumundi Storm, did a great job in making it to the semi-finals. The Starlights and Lightning just missed out on the finals in their divisions, but both teams finished the season on a high with nail-biting, nerve-wracking close games. The club’s youngest team, the Eumundi Flames who play in a non-competitive division, came along in “leaps and bounds” (pun intended!) while smiling throughout the whole season! In addition to the weekly competition, two teams of over 10 year-olds participated in a one day carnival held in July, playing against teams from as far as Gympie and Caboolture. This was a new experience for our players and they did well
in keeping up their energy and efforts over many games throughout the day. This year we’ve been fortunate in receiving generous support from EDCA and Eumundi Rotary. The sponsorship has allowed us to purchase new equipment, trophies and has helped with registration costs. Our families and volunteers have also continued to provide their support in many ways from coaching, to managing, to being canteen and BBQ extraordinaires! So after a well-deserved rest over summer, Eumundi netball friends and families can look forward to another season of fun and fitness in 2018!

live happy!
Nine weeks ago, a team of local women from the Eumundi Run for Fun group set out to achieve some exciting personal goals. The runners, ranging from beginners through to experienced, entered this year’s Sunshine Coast Marathon in Mooloolaba on Sunday 20 August. We had three members complete their first 5km race, one their first 2km, and four members entered the 10km race. For some members this was about discovering what running was about, and what their bodies could do. For others it was smashing their Personal Best time and testing their limits. But the lovely bonus was a great sense of comradery and support from each other. As

their coach, there was something very special about seeing each member cross the finish line for their respective races.

Running is not about winning a race, it’s about challenging yourself, getting out of your comfort zone, gaining more self-confidence to achieve new dreams and most importantly about friendship and making the most of every minute and second of life! Running really is for everyone and all runners are welcome to join the Eumundi Run for Fun club. We meet each Sunday and continue to challenge, uplift and support one another towards the next chapter in our running journey!

Smoked beef brisket slider Brisket is one of the more difficult cuts of meat to master but the flavour is, I think, really worth it and one of the best cuts you can get from a bovine. I love to champion brisket at Bohemian Bungalow. To prepare the beef for these sliders you just need three ingredients – that’s it. It takes a while to make but it’s really easy to assemble. Serve on a grilled milk or brioche bun with rocket, smoked button mushrooms and new potatoes with fresh herbs and garlic. Finish with red cabbage pickle and horseradish aioli.
Ned Nolan, Chef, Eumundi
Method Bring brisket to room temperature, then generously season all surfaces with coarse black pepper and sea salt. Smoke for 8-10 hours (or more depending on brisket size). Keep temperature steady at 120°C. Keep water bath in smoker (or BBQ with a closed lid) for added moisture. After around 6 hours you can wrap in foil if desired colour is reached and rest for around 1 hour. Cut small buns in half, rub with olive oil and grill on the BBQ (or in a grill pan) until golden. Carve and enjoy.

Amber Grimley, Eumundi
Tree hugger competition winners Thank you to everyone that entered our Tree Hugger competition. We need to stop thinking about ourselves and start thinking about our children and their children’s future. The time for being greedy consumers is over. Let’s look after the trees we have left and plant more. More trees for the future. More trees for our koalas, all animals, our children. Trees are life so keep hugging those trees! Eumundi Bushcare Group would like to thank Barung Landcare and Sauers Produce and Garden Centre for their generous donations. Congratulations to the following people: Category 1: Most Impressive Tree Hugger Rebecca Kavanagh - Native Fig at Brisbane Botanic Gardens Trees are our life, they help us breathe and give us shade, and we can make heaps of things out of wood like houses, tables, photo frames, cooking spoons. Lots of animals live in trees. We should look after trees and plant new ones.
Eco designer Brett Grimley and his wife Amber will be opening their house in Eumundi for Sustainable House Day on Sunday 17 September from 10am to 4pm. This national event encourages people to see and learn how they can live sustainably and help the environment through good home design. All visitors to Sustainable House Day must register to attend at: sustainablehouseday.com to obtain open house addresses.

Maree Harding – Native tree in Eumundi Conservation Park We love trees! Trees are the air that we breathe, they are the roots in the earth which joins us all as one. Without our trees there is nothing. To me, trees are life and are to be cared for and enjoyed. Maree wins a Noosa’s Native Plants book by Stephanie Haslam. Category 3: Smallest Tree Hugger Hejira Convery – Camphor Laurel Ajuna says: I love trees because kookaburras sit in them and I like hearing them laughing in the morning. And trees look very beautiful with fairy lights in them.

Business Cont’d from pg 5 We’ll now start looking at our first seasonal beer - a Ginger Pale Ale - which should be a heap of fun partnering with local ginger growers,” Chris shared. At the opening Chris and Eumundi brewer Allan Tilden took small groups down onto the new brewery floor, amongst the tanks, to share their brewing process and give insight into the upcoming brewery tours penned for October. Imperial Hotel manager Paul Thomas said it’s exciting to be able to share an authentic craft brewery experience with patrons. “Visitors to the hotel can watch the brewers at work and see where the brewing takes place,” Paul said.
