Notes Editor’s note ... Print publications are under constant pressure to run news and feature ‘advertorial’ in exchange for advert backing. The Green continues to only run community content written about locals, by locals. I actually don’t know of another publication that can boast the same. This is why we continue to have such an enviable readership. Locals actually read the Green from cover to cover. We can only do this because of the backing of Experience Eumundi – which continues to fill the breach and give this community its own voice - not Noosa’s or Caloundra’s. But the heart of the Green, that keeps the mag printing, is our volunteers. The ONLY way our community magazine continues to be printed is because of the thousands of volunteer hours every year from a skeleton crew, plus an incredible team of deliverers, inserters, proofers, writers and photographers – who do it for the love of the Green. Merry Christmas hinterlanders. Enjoy the summer. Thanks for reading! ECCO thanks the volunteers who contributed over 100 hours production, collation and delivery work for the last issue of The Green Proofreading: Bronwen Pearson, Hamish Cameron, Anthony WynneHoelscher & Sacha HamiltonMacLaren.

Community CR STE PH E N ROB IN SON Division 9

It was terrific to attend the Eumundi and District Historical Association AGM for an insight into the group’s successes of the last 12 months. Congratulations to Donata Page and her hardworking committee for an outstanding year of community outcomes. I believe the importance and recognition of the Eumundi and districts history has been well-served by the efforts of EHA. The group coordinates the Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre, which has great interpretive displays with items of historical interest. It’s well worth a visit. Celebrating business success: Our region has many fantastic local businesses and it was great to see so many recognised at the 2017 Sunshine Coast Business Awards. It was an incredibly successful event, with more than 500 people in attendance and hundreds of businesses acknowledged for their success and contribution to the region. The recipients included, among others, HeliMods as Business of

the Year, Will Shrapnel of HeliMods as Outstanding Business Person of the Year and Matt Hepburn of Your Mates Brewing Co. as Young Entrepreneur of the Year. New market terraces: I know many of you will be aware of the new terraces upgrade for the Eumundi Markets, but I would like to thank everyone involved for their efforts – the end product is an outstanding result and a great example of council and the community working together.

M O - V E M B E R F O R M E N ’ S H E A LT H Cleve Holloway, Eumundi Mo-vember men had a terrific evening last Thursday in the Outback Bar celebrating a month of moustache growing. About 40 guys (and girls) enjoyed the music stylings of the Brown Trouts, enjoyed an eight hour slow cooked pork by Gav Charlton, and $5 schooners put on by the Imperial Hotel. There were a few local celebrity karaoke performances - Paul McCartney and Axl Rose got up

and sang... at least they sounded very much like them. Movember is all about creating awareness about Men’s physical and mental health and getting men talking to each other about their health issues. In particular prostate and testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. We raised $1650 for Movember, but more importantly we raised awareness about Men’s heath.

Doonan Bridge Road: I have recently met with the Doonan/ Verrierdale community on this important project. The community has raised concerns over the road design and consequently I have arranged for an independent engineering assessment to consider other options. I will keep the nearby residents posted. I would like to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas and a safe and prosperous new year. I look forward to working with you again in 2018.

NEW SIGNAGE FOR WEYBA

VOLUNTEERS THANKED More than 100 volunteers from the Noosa region celebrated the annual International Volunteer Day Brunch to say thank you to locals who donate their time to Noosa’s 300-plus community groups each year. Mayor Tony Wellington said, “Volunteering helps build social capital, and improves everyone’s lives, including the volunteers themselves. “Masses of international research has shown that volunteering is a great way to enhance personal wellbeing - so it’s the ultimate winwin activity.” noosa.qld.gov.au/volunteering.

The Friends of Lake Weyba have recently organised a chalk sign so the tight knit community can keep in touch and hear of any community events - such as the Carols by Candlelight on Friday 15 December. Weyba local Chris Van Wyk shared, “Lots of the families still walk around the block and get to meet this way, I guess the chalk board was inspired as a place for ‘analogue facebook’ just in case people don’t get to cross paths in person - plus it gives us another place to meet each other besides ’down at the tree’ or ‘at the creek

at midday for lunch.’” “This neighbourhood is a fairly unique place, these days, where foot-traffic and kids playing still have right-of-way in the streets,” Chris enthused.

CHRISTMAS RAIN AND SHINE Last Saturday’s festive Christmas Carols in Eumundi went ahead despite the storm brewing. Luckily the tempestuous weather held off for long enough for sparkling performances from: Eumundi State School’s Choir, Doo Wop Dolls, Eumundi Calisthenics dancers and the Cherry Ripes. Community ECCO REPORT

Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher, Eumundi

CHAMBER REPORT What an incredible year for Eumundi Chamber of Commerce (ECC)! We successfully gained three grants from Sunshine Coast Council that contributed to: Horizon Festival’s Art Street Eumundi; 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast celebrations; and funding to support Chamber operations. Between the volunteer management committee David Perez (Villa Prestige Properties), Carol Dolan (Noosa Hinterland Realty) Louise Formosa (Eko Consulting) and myself (Artisans Gallery), we estimate to have undertaken easily over 300 hours of volunteer work over this year.

2018 Board From left: Andy Dudas, Paul Curtis, Terry Lawrence, Louise Formosa, David Perez, Donata Page. Chair Terry Lawrence outlined another year of achievement for the community at the recent AGM for Eumundi Combined Community Organisation – trading as Experience Eumundi. With primary income from parking approximately 103,000 cars of visitors to our famous Markets, some $250,000 was channelled back to the Eumundi community via direct donations to carpark volunteer groups, as well as key support for community cultural events including Eumundi Art St, Earth Hour, Sunshine Coast 50 Year celebrations, Xmas in Eumundi and Eumundi School of Rock. Additionally, Experience Eumundi in association with EDCA, EHA and Council delivered the magnificent new Terraces redevelopment for enduring markets and community amenity.

The RV Stopover has experienced strong and growing numbers, which is of great benefit to Eumundi Businesses and markets – with a full house often by midday, particularly on Tuesdays and Fridays. Additionally, our beloved Green magazine, Experience Eumundi online assets and the Community Bus (now free for Thursday shopping trips for pensioners) continued their stellar work for our community. Before handing over to incoming Chair Louise Formosa, who also represents Experience Eumundi on the new Visit Sunshine Coast Destination Promotion Program, Terry thanked the tireless efforts of the Board and also the general manager and staff for a job well done. gm@eumundicco.com.au

functions have been very popular, presenting stimulating guest speakers and pertinent topics. Combined with networking, these events have lead to strong relationships and partnerships with Visit Noosa, Visit Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast Economic Development Branch, as well as beneficial introductions that are vital to the growth of our business community. Improvements to member communications are underway with the launch of a new Facebook page, and in the New Year, the development of a new branding strategy and website that will provide members with more resources. Chamber Membership has continued to grow. The number of new memberships received this year has been overwhelming, with new interest across the wider 4562. In delivering an array of events activities for the benefit of businesses and the community we are committed to improving services and returns to members whenever we can. Community EDCA REPORT

As young newlyweds Michael and Anna Stuber emigrated to Australia planning to stay for two years ...that was 35 years ago. As Michael and Anna had grown up in Germany, they knew all about Birkenstock shoes but they were yet to gain popularity in Australia. Together with their two teenaged daughters they decided to swap reef and rainforest in Cairns for surf and sunshine, on the Sunshine Coast and opened their very first Birkis Footwear market stall at Parkside Markets. Nowadays Birkis Footwear is enjoying their move to Eumundi Square.

Louise Formosa, Eumundi

Eumundi District & Community Association (EDCA) has been busy this year with a number of community projects. EDCA contributed approximately $300,000 towards the upgrade of the Terraces. The funds were raised by stallholder rents received by EDCA volunteers who manage and operate the markets on the terraces each Wednesday. A big thank you to all our stallholders for making this possible, as well as Jenny and Louis Formosa, and Lainie and James Adams for the hundreds of volunteer hours they put in each year to create this opportunity for our community. We have given the old scout hall a major facelift, with a repaint, polished floors and air conditioning recently installed. We also have new gates on the front for vehicle and pedestrian entry. EDCA has been holding their monthly meetings at the old scout hall for most of the year now and we are very pleased by the demand and interest in the weekly hiring of the hall for fitness and sporting groups

and the like. The Community Garden subcommittee received Council’s go ahead to finally build the Eumundi community garden around the old scout hall and a number of volunteers have been finalising plans and adding quite a few early additions to the garden which they are hoping to have in full bloom by next year! EDCA has also been a major contributor to community events, with $5,000 being donated to Eumundi Chamber of Commerce for the 50 Year Naming of the Sunshine Coats festivities and $7,000 being donated to Experience Eumundi to co-ordinate the Horizon event for the purposes of sponsoring the street art on a number of our bins in town and also the underpass on Caplick Way. We are now busy stocking surprise Christmas hampers for a number of families in Eumundi that are finding it tough this year, and preparing for lots of awesome fun for our Australia Day Celebrations on 26 January, so we look forward to seeing you all there!

VERRIERDALE COMMUNITY R E P O R T Faye Wiggins, Verrierdale Michael and Anna are passionate about the Birkenstock sandals they stock for ladies, men and children and pride themselves on their product knowledge. They can even repair your old and loved Birkenstocks! See them at Birkis Footwear for a quote!

The Verrierdale community group have been busy this year raising funds for the hall upgrades made possible by fundraising from the five full moon dances. This year the group hosted the Verrierdale school 100 year anniversary and has also hosted: BBQ for Australia Day; Anzac Day ceremony with gun fire breakfast; popular wedding venue; Cancer Big Morning Tea; regular tap dancing classes; { T H E G R E E N 13 December 2017

regular zumba classes. The first event at the Verrierdale Hall in 2018 will be the Australia Day BBQ on 27 January. Next year funds will go to the hall’s maintenance: much needed repairs to the front driveway and entrance to the hall including new covered drains for safer parking and access from the car park; car park extension; new chairs, plus improvements to the outdoor kitchen.

Community A W O N D E R F U L E U M U N D I R O TA RY Y E A R Janet Millington, Eumundi The club is happy to announce that all their targets were met and then some! Eumundi Branch’s efforts in the vocational avenue of service was recognised nationally. The Eumundi Rotary Long Lunch, our signature event, was highly successful. Everyone had a fabulous Carnivale Day with funds raised going to palliative care units. The splendid venue and seating were provided by the Original Eumundi Markets. We supported the Eumundi State

School and Fire Brigade with equipment and joined with other community groups in providing local events for Australia Day, 50th Anniversary of Sunshine Coast, and the wonderfully entertaining Christmas Carols. Our members supported the ANZAC and Remembrance Day celebrations in our town. Our regional action continues in Cloncurry, where we provide breakfasts at school for children who want it in a rather disadvantaged area of our state. Two members visited the school

BELLI COMMUNITY REPORT The Belli Community Hall has had another busy year with many people enjoying our Old Time Country Dances. As part of the Festival of Community Halls celebrating 50 years since the naming of the Sunshine Coast, we held a retro Dance on 5 August and on 9 September we celebrated the Hall’s 85th Birthday. We are looking forward to 2018 and another year of great Dances.

this year providing support to the P & C, linking them with additional resources. We also supported Rotary International projects. Our “Back to PNG” night showed just how many locals have family and emotional ties to our closest neighbour, and we have begun planning direct action between Eumundi and Alotau in PNG. Underlying all that is the camaraderie of our cohesive

group that works within an international organisation using our vocational skills and knowledge to put service before self locally, regionally and internationally. Cont’d on pg 22

Our yoga classes on Friday mornings are still very popular with the local ladies. We also held a very successful Biggest Afternoon Tea in June with money raised being donated to the Cancer Council. On the downside, in September our pressure pump was stolen, making it impossible for us to access water. A very kind resident

loaned us a pump so we could continue with the yoga classes and September Dance until we were able to access emergency funding from the Sunshine Coast Council to replace the pump. We would like to acknowledge and thank the Council for providing us with this emergency funding and also our local plumber Gregg and electrician Chris for their help and assistance.

Note from the Mayor How did you travel around our healthy, smart, creative region today? I know there are many thousands of Sunshine Coast residents and visitors who would love to use public transport more often, and ease the traffic on our roads, if better travel options were available. The Sunshine Coast is Australia’s fifth largest council, servicing a growing population and we require a far superior public transport system to the one we have. Providing an efficient public transport service is the responsibility of the State Government, and we will be asking our newly elected State MPs to get 100% behind a better public transport system for our region. As part of the transport solution, council is advocating for a light rail system and, to make it happen, is prepared to contribute $100 million funded by our Transport Levy. This matches Gold Coast and Moreton councils’ contributions which led to them receiving State and Federal Government funding for their new rail infrastructure, as did Ipswich City Council for its Springfield rail connection.

A bridge in honour of Bill Bill Davison was an outstanding, community minded local who sadly passed away early this year. As a tribute to Bill’s lifetime of community service, council is naming the Bill Davison Bridge on Wegner Road in his honour. New signage will soon be installed at either end of the recently opened bridge, built to improve safety and minimise flood risks.

Operational works permits I am aware farmers – not in flood prone areas – from time to time need to move dirt and dig out dams. I believe that if this is the norm, not the exception in regard to their farming practices, they should not need to apply and pay for an Operational Works Permit. Under the current Planning Scheme, a fee-based Operational Works Permit is needed to excavate more than 150 cubic metres, and less in some instances. Without a permit, farmers and contractors risk a fine. With this in mind, I am meeting with council’s planning staff to discuss a possible amendment to the Planning Scheme. Thanks to the local earth moving contractors who brought this issue to my attention.

The grants program has the Coast covered If you’re passionate about growing your community, protecting the environment, supporting the arts or if you just love the festive season, check out council’s far reaching grants program. It’s there to make life on the Coast even better and each year council grants support one off projects, events and activities. The program also supports NFP organisations who provide key services, and individuals representing our region. For more information visit council’s website, or contact a grants officer on 5420 8616 to discuss your project.

Terrific terraces

Eumundi residents Greg L’Estrange and Jenny Brice are the Sunshine Coast’s 1000th Land for Wildlife partnership landholders, ensuring a home for local wildlife on their property. The Land for Wildlife Program, founded in Victoria in 1981, is one of Australia’s most successful private land conservation programs. Council delivers the largest program in Queensland, collectively protecting and restoring 8272 ha of habitat across the region. Greg and Jenny have been working with Landcare volunteers and officers transforming the former farming property into a natural haven. By reducing pesticides and carefully planting to attract birds and koala, they have created an invaluable wildlife corridor with adjoining Land for Wildlife properties. Visit council’s website to find out how you can become involved in the Land for Wildlife program.

Mt Ninderry trail news Grab a drink, the kids and the family dog and follow the new signs to very top of Mt Ninderry for stunning views of the Blackall Range, north to Lake Weyba and across Mt Coolum to Mooloolaba. With the growing popularity of this trail, council is planning new interpretive signage, new amenities and car-parking. Dogs on leads are permitted but all doggydo must be taken with you.

The $1.4 million refurbishment – jointly funded by Eumundi Combined Community Organisation (Experience Eumundi), the Eumundi and District Community Association, Eumundi Historical Association and council has absolutely transformed the terraces into a safer, more people friendly environment for stall holders and market goers. An additional $14,000 from the Division 10 Discretionary Fund made it possible to install drinking fountains on the terraces and a tap at the amphitheatre. Check it all out – lighting, new landscaping, gardens, seating and the fabulous stalls – at the Christmas night markets from 5-9pm on Friday 15 and 22 December. A footbridge at Seib Road

This Christmas

Council is exploring a new, safe way across the North Maroochy River at Eumundi for walkers, cyclists and horseriders.

Think of others

The current bridge on the busy Eumundi – Noosa Road is for motor vehicles and managed by Queensland Transport and Main Roads. Council has formally approached DTMR proposing an alternative crossing point off Seib Road, a possible concept design and a cost share if postelection support and State funding is available. There’s a way to go, but what a great alternative this would be for everyone who loves our great outdoors.

It’s just great to see the Eumundi Market stallholders back on the terraces as busy as ever. The crowds are back too, and soon summer holiday makers will add to the numbers enjoying one of the Coast’s best market experiences.

Community EHA REPORT

Wendy Birrell, Discover Eumundi manager

The Eumundi and District Historical Association (EHA) can be proud of its many achievements for the community in 2017. EHA oversees the running of Discover Eumundi (DE) and encouraged their volunteers to learn new skills, as well as the centre’s involvement in the Standards Program where all aspects of the DE operations were scrutinised and a plan of action developed to address weak areas. In a bid to reduce the running costs of lighting, the power systems were refurbished and solar panels added. As Trustees of Eumundi School of Arts, the association committed major funding for the hall which included the replacement of the annex roof with insulation added. Guttering and downpipes on the annex were renewed and the veranda decking was replaced, as well as the treads and railings on the stairs. The most dramatic change has been on the stage of the hall, with the walls being lined, lights and power upgraded, and stage curtains installed. Again, as part of a drive to reduce costs, solar panels have been installed on the small northern roof of the hall to fit with Heritage Listing guidelines where solar panels are not to be visible from the street. The next stage of upgrades will be a total rebuild of the toilet area, due to start late December and be

completed by mid-February 2018. Other work on the hall is also in the pipeline. As owners of the Original Eumundi Markets, EHA made an enormous contribution to the refurbishment of what are called the “Terraces” area of the market, after a number of years in negotiations with Sunshine Coast Council. In 2017, EHA again organised and provided funding for the community Australia Day Awards, ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day commemorations, and is the main sponsor of the Eumundi Christmas Carols.

C WA R E P O R T

This year was big for Queensland CWA with its 95th Anniversary and our little town was just 5 years later establishing a branch in Eumundi 90 years ago. So, as well as the ongoing projects the group supports, this year a lot of effort went into the hall. The whole building has been cleaned top to bottom. The timber floor was resurfaced with help from the Original Eumundi Markets. The new toilets with baby change table has really freshened up the hall, and with the kiddie gates repaired it is hoped that mothers can use the facility more easily. The hall is rented on an hourly basis for those providing services to the community, but use is free for not for profit organisations. The CWA looks forward to more use of the hall and to its regular meetings every Tuesday at 9.30am. All are welcome to drop in for a cuppa, a chat, work on crafts or supporting our wider community with activities such as; • Making significant donations each year to the Public Rural Crisis Fund which distributes

help to Qld regional and rural families in crisis. • Providing support to local individuals and families in need. • Supporting other organisations that respond to the needs of Qld families in drought, sickness, fire and flood. • Providing two bursaries each year for outback students to attend the Brisbane Conservatory of Music and become members of the Qld Youth Orchestra. • Working with Eumundi State School in the nationwide International Day each year that fosters greater understanding of other cultures. Our Anniversary tea towels are Russian linen and sell for $12 each. They make a lovely memento of our iconic building and ninety years of service. For more information about QCWA Eumundi call President Dell Ford 0476 165 001. Hall bookings 0402 062 465.

EHA president Donata Page, in her end of year report, stated that, “Our stewardship of this association is to ensure that not only do we meet our community obligation, but that we continue as the caretakers of a heritage that endures for the next generation.”

SHOWGROUND REPORT The Eumundi Showgrounds has had an eventful year with lots of community members utilising the grounds. Our Annual Horse Show had a smaller attendance this year due to the Nationals being held on the same day at Caboolture, but those that attended had a great day.

Books A D V E N T U R I N G I N S P I R AT I O N Lonely Planet has been producing travel guides for well over forty years. They have mainly been focused on destinations: where to travel, what to see and where to stay stock standard stuff. This book is different. This is a book of inspiration. There are many ways to explore this world and Lonely Planet’s Atlas of Adventure covers 150 countries and what adventure sports can be done while you’re there. The reader can access the book either alphabetically by country or by chosen adventure (eg: land sailing in Argentina). There’s a huge section on Australia, which has also been broken down into its states. There are easy adventures such as tramping in New Zealand and harder adventures such as surfing the longest left hander in the world in Peru, to the outright wacky like volcano boarding in Nicaragua or riding with eagle hunters in Mongolia. The best way to use this book is a guide for ideas; with a little research you will probably find a travel company that specialises

So, if mountain biking in Azerbaijan or kite surfing in Sri Lanka or even walking through Wales is your kinda thing, have a read of this book; it will give you inspiration to help you set your goals. Since reading this book my goal is to take the family to the world’s largest cave system in Vietnam, Son Doong. It takes about four days to trek through the cave, which is large enough to encompass the whole of Manhattan and fly a 747 through. My biggest hurdle is to convince the family to follow me on this adventure. But we’re a pretty adventurous bunch so it shouldn’t be too hard...

Music EUMUNDI ROCKS OUT THE SCHOOL YEAR On Sunday 3 December, the Eumundi School of Arts was absolutely rocking for the Eumundi School of Rock end of year concert, featuring the cream of the crop of this year’s scholarship program. Following on from the hugely successful 2016 inaugural program, this year’s graduating young rockers took their groove to the hinterland in fine style! The brainchild of five time ARIA award-winning local songstress Katie Noonan, Eumundi School of Rock saw twenty students aged from eight to thirteen undertake more than three months of auditions, tutoring and mentoring. All absolutely free thanks not only to ticket sales from the show, but also from greatly appreciated grant funding and in-kind support. Major financial support this year came from Experience Eumundi, Australian Government Regional Arts Funding and Tourism Noosa.

with legendary Australian singer Abby Dobson (Leonard’s Bride) and, of course, Katie Noonan. A special moment was when four lucky students - Claire, Shayla, Grace and Zion performed on stage with Abby for a pitch perfect rendition of her APRA song of the year hit Even When I’m Sleeping. This was actually Grace’s very first

time singing on stage - with the woman who made the song famous! Other highlights included the awarding of an amazing YAMA-NUI studio recording package prize, plus seven Music at Noosa vouchers for our hardest working and most improved students, and one special top award for overall most improved - a Yamaha PSREW30 keyboard - going to Juliette Samarcq. Katie Noonan shared, “Eumundi School of Rock provides a unique opportunity, at no cost to the

student, to develop their musical skills and learn stagecraft under the tutorship of top professionals - and step up and truly perform to a real audience as part of a genuine rock band.” “I think our wonderful School of Rock teachers found the program just as rewarding, as we witnessed our young protégés hit their high notes in such a brilliant concert performance.” “It was an inspiring afternoon of awesome music!”

Craft SLIME TIME Slime is great for stretching, squidging, farting and blowing bubbles. Eumundi State School grade five kids took a few of the slimes from The Slime Book for a test run. They followed the recipes easily and had a lot of fun getting the colours and consistencies right.

These superior slimes are the incredible reason why we have fun here at school. The marvel we made was a slime called “fake snot”. It was easy but took a while. In the rest of the time we made bubble slime – now that was fun! Eli, Jett, Lachlan, Keanu

We made all different types of slime such as Glow-in-the-dark, stretchy, fluffy, unicorn, bubble and fake snot. Our group made stretchy slime. We took turns in the steps of making the slime. At the beginning it was really stretchy. We saw the bubble slime made huge bubbles, so we wanted to try. But after blowing some bubbles it lost its stretch. The glow in the dark was our favourite because it glowed and was soft and stretchy. Nuala, Ceana,Charlotte, Molly.

E GLOW-IN-THE-DARK SLIM TIME: 10 minutes DIFFICULTY: Easy WARNING: Non-edible & may stain INGREDIENTS:

Glow in the dark slime is like putty slime. As well as glowing it also made great fart noises. The downfall was it took ages to charge. It’s easy to make since there aren’t many ingredients needed. This slime was our favourite. Rhys, Dash, Gus.

18

• ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda • 120ml (4 fl oz) warm water • 140ml (5 fl oz) • glow-in-the-dark poster paint • eyewash – MUST contain boric acid and sodium borate (available from Eumundi Phar mac y) 1. Squirt plenty of glow-in-thedark poster paint into a bowl containing bicarbonate of soda, water, and glue. 2. Stir in the paint and add eyewash, bit by bit. When the slime stops sticking to the bowl, it’s almost ready.

{ T H E G R E E N 13 December 2017

3. Switch off the light and mix your slime with your hands. This slime works best when it’s still gloopy. Don’t forget to wash your hands when you’ve finished playing! You’ll need to charge up your slime so you can see it in the dark. Shine a torch on it to get it glowing brightly.

Outdoors M O U N T T I N B E E R WA H , T E WA N T I N Mount Tinbeerwah in the Tewantin National Park has spectacular 360° panoramic views over Noosa and the Pacific Ocean. Allow about 45mins walking time for the 1km track. Beyond the first lookout the track climbs to the fire tower lookout perched 265m above sea level - an additional 300m walk. On a good day the volcanic plugs of the Glass House Mountains can be seen in the distance to the south. Go late afternoon for the beautiful sunsets. The park preserves diverse landscapes and wildlife: rainforest, open eucalypt forest and wallum remnants between Noosa and Cooroy provide important refuge for native wildlife including echindas,

swamp wallabies and wallum froglets. There are countless species of birds including the characteristic eastern whip bird and black cockatoo.

Mount Tinbeerwah day-use area has toilets, a tap and picnic tables. The walk has wheelchair and pram access to the first lookout point.

Directions:

Nearby:

6km west of Tewantin on the Noosa Cooroy Rd, turn north onto Mount Tinbeerwah Rd (signposted). Follow the road for 3km (some of which is graded), to the carpark. From there, follow the track up across the granite boulders to the top. Watch for the drop off to the west, which is used by assailers.

Tewantin National Park located west of Tewantin has two recreational areas—Mount Tinbeerwah and Wooroi day-use areas. Tracks in the Wooroi area pass through tall forests, rainforest gullies and semi-heath areas. Mountain bike riders have several trails to choose from that vary in length and difficulty. Most are suitable for beginners with moderate fitness.

Facilities: Abseiling and rock-climbing is permitted for experienced and suitably equipped people.

Outdoors FIRE REPORT

Duncan Sayers, Eumundi

This year has seen a variety of challenges for the Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade. Our 2016 fire season ran right through into early 2017. It was a really busy period for us and other brigades in the area, culminating in the major fire near Coolum. Our fire season only finished with the coming of Cyclone Debbie at the end of March. We thought the rain would give us a break. Instead we were out helping the SES fill sandbags, and working with our chainsaws clearing up the resultant storm damage. Then the rain stopped. What followed was a very dry winter, bringing heightened fire danger ratings and raised alert levels for the brigade. We dodged a bullet in our immediate brigade area, with no major bushfire incidents to speak of. However, we were called on to support firefighting efforts outside our area, with a particularly busy time associated with the Caloundra fire in August. Importantly the recruitment and rebuilding efforts of the brigade have paid off. Even with key personnel being unavailable during some busy

periods, our trucks were crewed and responded every time we have been called, maintaining a 100% turnout rate. This has been our greatest achievement. Together we have built a robust, resilient brigade – one that the community can rely on to be there when we are needed in emergencies. Moreover, we have a fantastic tight-knit microcommunity of our own, in the volunteer women and men that make up our crew. We not only have each other’s backs doing our job on the fire-ground, but we look after each other more broadly – the essence of a strong community. We still need more volunteers, as do many of the brigades, SES groups and other community organisations in our area. My advice for what it’s worth: perhaps as a newyear’s resolution, explore your interests and find a volunteer group to hang out with next year. I have experienced firsthand that volunteering returns so much more than you give. You’ve got nothing to lose other than a bit of your time. What we gain as individuals, and as a community, is priceless.

COMMUNITY GARDEN Louise Formosa, Eumundi Wow what a year the Community Garden has had! It felt like it took so long to get approval from Council, but we didn’t give up and we can now get a move on! There have been a few amazing volunteers we would like to thank from the outset as without them the project would never have got through very frustrating times!!! Anja Morgan, what a legend - she has never given up on securing a site for a community garden in Eumundi for over 20 years... Then there is Brian Jane, our strong, reliable garden and fence builder extraordinaire, this man never stops! Gwenda is our busy beaver who has an inspiring passion for gardens and is so lovely to be around and extremely helpful every step of the way. Billy Mizzi knows more about fungi and soil bacteria than any of us and has huge plans to make

sure these guys live happily ever after in our garden. There are a number of other volunteers who have turned up either to our second Sunday of the month working bees or who have contributed at our fortnightly planning meetings and we can’t thank you all enough for your efforts. This year was very slow for us all but the foundations are there, next year we will all be a lot busier and hoping as many of our fellow community volunteers can join in so the gardens will be up and running and full of life by Christmas next year. Thank you to everyone for your support, we are a very happy bunch of green thumbs who are very excited about our new venture.
