Notes I have a confession to make. I actually really like it when it floods. I really enjoy watching the creeks and dams break their banks and creep into back yards, under houses and block roads. And I know it’s absolutely a HUGE NO but I enjoy watching cars try and take on rushing roads as the water rises before they’re completely cut off (sorry Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade). I love how Mother Nature puts us in our place. Going to work today? Nup - roads are blocked. Using the internet? Connection’s down. Want to do the washing? No power! I love the rainy day soundtrack the frogs and birds sing. And how colourful petals and leaves paint everything like a Jackson Pollock. I do not, however, like the humidity. Everything feels damp. The smell of mould permeates up through the floor boards. And there’s a funky smell... coming from somewhere... dead possum in the wall? Insects move indoors. Vines and branches ominously grow overnight, pushing against windows, climbing verandas, creeping inside and blurring the indoor-outdoor line we hinterlanders fight to keep.

The Queensland Government will enforce a state-wide ban on single-use plastic bags from 1 July. This ban will affect all retailers from grocery stores to fashion boutiques, from convenience stores to fast food outlets – that currently use light-weight plastic bags, including HDPE plastic, biodegradable, compostable, and degradable bags. The goal of the ban is to move consumers away from single use bags and into re-usable bags. The National Retail Association has partnered with the Qld Govt to help retailers navigate the new compliance issues, find alternative bag solutions, and to help retailers manage consumer

sentiment to minimise impacts on their businesses. Fines of $6095 per offence will apply for retailers and suppliers after 1 July.

BOOMERANG BAG WORKING BEE

Businesses will need to consider alternative bag options, associated costs and impacts on the business such as: Will you provide alternative bags?; Will you charge for these? Though the law only bans plastic bags under 35 microns, retailers should consider how the ongoing use of any plastic will be perceived by the customers. Plan an end date for ordering plastic bags, start educating customers and train your team.

Why are biodegradable bags banned? A biodegradable bag is made from natural material such as cornstarch (rather than petrochemical HDPE or LDPE plastic) and is designed to break down. All existing plastic bag legislation in Australia exempts biodegradable bags from the ban where they meet the Australian Standard. However, studies have shown that biodegradable plastics bags do not break down any faster when swallowed than a ‘normal’ petrochemical plastic bag. Given the environmental impact on Qld marine life, the Govt has decided to include biodegradable bags in the ban. qldbagban.com.au/managing-the-ban-step2/

Boomerang Bags is gearing up for the impending plastic bag ban with a working bee this Fri 2 March at the CWA hall from 2-6pm. Cutters, ironers, pinners and sewers are all needed. No experience necessary. Fabric and men’s tie donations are very welcome. Drop off at Eumundi Village Pharmacy. For more information contact Hayley 0412 958 446.

Community H I N T E R L A N D S O L A R FA R M S U R PA S S I N G F I R S T Y E A R TA R G E T S Sunshine Coast Council announced last week that the Valdora Solar Farm is surpassing its targets in its first year by offsetting more than 100% of Sunshine Coast Council’s total electricity consumption and delivering almost $1 million in savings. The electricity output from the 15 megawatt hinterland solar farm – the first to be built by a local government in Australia - has been steadily increasing since July last year with recent monthly figures significantly exceeding forecasts. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the strong electricity generation from the farm during January allowed council to offset 129% of its total power consumption. “It is very encouraging to see the solar farm is on track to exceed the targeted $22m in public savings over 30 years identified in the May 2016 business case,” Mayor Jamieson said.

Music CHORALE CALLING All my life I have dreamed of joining a choir, so naturally I was excited to discover the Noosa Chorale in 2003, two minutes up the road from where I worked and a short drive from Eumundi where I still live. Little did I know that the Noosa Chorale was established in 1994, one year after I started my job.... so I was surprised to learn that it had sung and performed for a whole nine years without me! I found being part of this choir was fun, uplifting, relaxing and inspiring, not to mention the great camaraderie amongst a group of like-minded people. My first concert in June 2003 was Opera Gloria, music of Verdi and Puccini. I was thrilled to be learning and singing such magnificent music. Over the years the Noosa Chorale has sung various genres of music, performing a couple of concerts per year, usually accompanied by local orchestras. The Chorale also sings for community and special events, for example

Babette Urban, Eumundi Anzac Day, Citizenship ceremonies, the annual lighting of the Hastings St Christmas Tree, and even a Flash Mob appearance in Noosa. For ten years we have presented the popular Wassail - a Christmas concert during which we spread festive cheer and serve Christmas fare. Our next concert will be beautiful Baroque music from Handel and Bach, will be performed at The J, Noosa Junction, by the Noosa Chorale with soloists and orchestra, on Saturday 26 May, 2pm (one performance only). See noosachorale.org.au for bookings or to maybe even join?

RAINY

I thought it rained in Sydney, but nothing compares to the deluges here in the A WET WEATHER COMPILATION hinterland. 100m - BAM - just like that! The upside is that the tanks are full... the FOR HINTERLANDERS down side though is watching the neighbour’s newly dressed driveway slithering its way down the mountain.

DAYS

All of this rain got me thinking... what Eumundi needs is a concept album! I’m calling it Rainy Days. Now most songs with the ‘rainy’ theme are often songs of love and loss and are more often than not, in a Minor key just to add to the general feeling of sadness, but some go against that grain. Here are my top four. 1. Raining in My Heart Buddy Holly 1959 A song of longing and loss. Right from the intro, the string parts are pizzicato representing the droplets of rain, and then of course the pristine vocal of Buddy pokes through the clouds just like the sun would. A wonderful example of how we viewed the world of music in the 50’s with sadness encased in a silver lining.

Health F I T N E S S WA R R I O R S There’s something brewing other than beer in Eumundi. There’s been a recent shift in energy, a changing of focus, a lifting of spirits - you can feel it in the air on any given day ... It’s locals in workout gear! You’ve all seen it – they’re out in force on our streets and it’s awesome! If you’ve driven past the hall on a weekday morning you would have most likely noticed a group of well assembled, incredibly ripped athletes slaying through

reps like pros! That might be a slight exaggeration, but not too far from the truth. The slaying begins with a warm up, which normally involves conversations about who’s got tight glutes, whose kid kept them up last night, Edna’s hips and how did everyone pull up from yesterday’s sesh? This is followed with around 45 minutes of grinding the hell out of a session that never seems to end! “One more - last one - almost there!” shouts our trainer Sam.

These words do not mean anything; these are lies, complete and utter corrupt versions of encouragement! But it works brilliantly every time. See, what we are all hanging out to hear are the words, “Let’s stretch!” This is 100% confirmation that you have made it. The grinding, the exertion - it was all worth it and you now have permission to collapse. It sounds intense... that’s because it kinda is - in a fun way though.

stereotype of a ‘mum and dad’ training group; we may not be ripped athletes, but we know how to give it our all. We are all different fitness levels but we all give 100%. There’s something about a group session that makes you raise the bar, motivates and pushes you. It’s not competition - it’s purely noticing the determination of the group, forcing yourself to keep going and encouraging your mates next to you.

Cont’d from page 13 See the main thing that’s brewing in town isn’t the ever so sexy workout gear - it’s the invaluable comradery. The spirit of community, the mateship and the solid support network that continues to grow at sessions like these. For some locals these classes have been nonetheless life changing - physically and

emotionally - and it has honestly been one of the most heartwarming and inspiring things to be part of. This month about 20 Eumundi locals are embarking on a new 12 week Fitness Warrior challenge – one that will push us right out of our comfort zones and onto the path of the Spartan Australia Race in

Brisbane this April. It will be this fusion of comradery; our own determination and the expertise of Head Trainer Samantha Williams that will see us all cross that finish line together. I’m fairly certain that after completing the 23 obstacles of the arduous course that those most anticipated words, “let’s stretch” will sound like absolute heaven and the ache will be

outweighed by an immense feeling of accomplishment and pride for all involved. It has honestly been such a joy to photograph these local legends and share this amazing gig with the rest of Eumundi! Part of the proceeds from the Eumundi Fitness 12 week Fitness Warrior Challenge will be going to the children’s charity Forget-Me-Not Foundation.

Living W H AT I S T H E G I G E C O N O M Y ? Jenny Brice, Eumundi The gig economy is a new way of working. You obtain work by going online or via an App. Uber (the ride sharing company) or Deliveroo (restaurant food delivered to your door) are good examples of this. The gig economy is also a term used to describe when casual or contract workers have more than one employer. For example a person may clean a house in the morning, work at a shop in the afternoon and edit documents of an evening. It is called the gig economy because people go from one “gig” to another. These people are called giggers. This changing nature of work provides more flexibility and less security. This expression is a relatively new term that came into usage after the financial crisis of 2008. The percentage of Australians currently obtaining regular work via a gig platform today is 5% - or about 80,000 people - and it is anticipated to grow exponentially. Casual employees make up 22.6% of the workforce in Australia. In the past two years, the number of people who say they work two jobs jumped 36% to 600,000. The number who work three jobs rocketed 50% to 52,000. But when you’re a gigger you need to know how to protect yourself and take as much personal responsibility for your future as you can. Check current legal entitlements. Staff who work in casual employment have recently won the right to request permanent employment if they work regular hours over a year. Employers can refuse the request on reasonable grounds. Permanent employees have entitlements casuals don’t, like

sick leave and notice periods. Understand your superannuation entitlements. Check if the correct amount is being put into your superannuation funds. Millions of dollars are lost by not following this through. Keep informed about potential changes. Countries such as the United Kingdom are investigating legislative changes to protect workers from potential exploitation in the gig economy. Seek financial advice. Consider insurance options and mortgage options in advance. If you need assistance seek help quickly. Everything takes time. If offered permanent work, weigh up all the pros and cons before deciding. If unexpected unemployment occurs, don’t do it alone. Family, friends and community can help. I recently have witnessed first-hand what friends and organisations like Rotary can do to help people in our community. They just do it quietly and with no fanfare. What a great community we live in. abs.gov.au/ausstats *This is my experience. Do not consider this legal advice.

ARE GUINEA PIGS GOOD PETS? Kirstie Henning, All Animal Therapy, North Arm Officially known as Cavies (Cavy), these little rodents are popular pets as they are cute, docile and come in all different colours. They seem to be in demand in Queensland because we can’t have rabbits as pets and they are attractive to families with young children as there is a perception they are easy to care for. What is involved with keeping guinea pigs and are they right for you?

cage you will need to clean up poop and wet patches every day and a full clean weekly. If they are on the grass then it is best to have a moveable cage so they can be put on fresh grass every day. Their cage needs to be predator-proof so they are safe from snakes and other animals. Clipping their nails, checking their teeth and treating them for worms and mites is also required.

Like owning any animal, it is best to understand what is involved before getting guinea pigs as they are a commitment and have certain requirements to keep them happy and healthy. Guinea Pigs can live up to 8 years and live in social groups, so you need to own more than one. They are a prey species and spend a lot of the time hiding away in long grasses out of sight. They can scare easily if they are in an environment with loud noises and other animals such as dogs. Being heat sensitive means they can struggle in our summer and will need extra attention on very hot days.

Even though these little critters are wonderful to own they do require time and attention every day. Contact the Sunshine Coast registered charity to adopt a rescued guinea pig.

Guinea pigs need access to long grass all of the time or a good quality hay. They must have Vitamin C and if they do not get enough they will get scurvy which can be fatal. Providing cut up fruit and vegetables every day is recommended. Cavies can be a bit messy as they do not go to the toilet in one spot. If you keep them in a

Outdoors NEWS FROM THE WILDLIFE CENTRE Eumundi Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (EWRC) manager Vicki Toomey has been working at the Centre with founder Gill Brownhill for around fifteen years and drives from the Glass House Mountains twice a week to help the hinterland’s sick and injured fauna. Jenny explained that on average, EWRC has 50 possums, many other marsupials and around 200 birds – with this number tripling in Spring. The Centre takes injured animals 24 hours a day, seven days a week. At the moment the Centre has a number of orphaned broods of baby Pacific Black ducklings, Kookaburras, rainbow lorikeets and lots of Figbirds. The animals are brought in by concerned

hinterland locals are seen by the RSPCA vet (who visits the Centre twice a week). They’re are kept in incubators or small cages until they’ve healed enough to go into a larger aviary with more of their breed. The ten acre wildlife refuge includes nine flight aviaries, 18 small aviaries, nine possum houses and two large intensive care buildings. Vicki said one of her favourite moments is getting to release the animals back into the wild knowing they’ve done everything they can to give the animal another chance of survival. The carers try to release the animals at the same place they were found. Photos cont’d on pg 18 Tawny Frogmouth Owl

NOTICES

2. Here Comes The Rain Again The Eurythmics 1984 This wonderful example of 80’s synth driven pop also employs the use of ‘pizzicato’ style synth sounds to mimic the rain drops and then that wonderful voice of Annie Lennox lets us know who’s boss.

Charles Walter George passed away peacefully with his family present in his home at Belli Park on 30 January at 91 years. Charles is survived by his four children and seven grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and community. Forever in our hearts.

3. Have You Ever Seen The Rain Creedence Clearwater 1971 Shock, horror! This song is in a Major or ‘happy’ key and starts with that easy acoustic guitar strum that was the hallmark of the ‘west coast’ sound. But this happy vibe quickly gives rise to the dark, intense lyrics of loss of innocence. It has become a classic and worthy of inclusion.

Seeking volunteers Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled (RDA) in North Arm is always looking for more volunteers to assist nearly 200 children and adults with a disability. A desire to help others and a few spare hours each week is all you need. No previous experience needed as full training and mentoring given. sunshinecoastrda.com or 5447 6604

Baby Fig Birds that fell out of a tree.

4. It’s Raining Again Supertramp 1982 Happy major key again and this time it’s constructed as if in a round in the refrain. It’s the repetition that gives you a good sense of comfort and it’s easy to recall. Then that comfort goes with the development into the bridge. It’s simple but effective and a great song to accompany a glass of your favourite as the rain never lets up.
