In recent years Eumundi and its hinterland has been experiencing incredible growth, as young families, professionals, retirees and tree changers move into this beautiful piece of paradise. And, because of this growth not all households are regularly getting a Green through their letterbox each fortnight.

Noosa hinterland has one of the best State primary Schools in Queensland, is close to beaches, within decent reach of Brisbane, properties are semi-rural, the scenery is lush and beautiful, the village is pretty with most amenities catered for – it is the ultimate rural region in which to raise a family.

But the 4562 region is experiencing an extreme lack of available rentals and a limited amount of properties for sale. This has meant people wanting to move into the area have had to take what they can get and compete against many other families to secure rental accommodation. The recently released Rental Vulnerability Index pinpointed Eumundi, Doonan and surrounds as highly unaffordable areas to rent in Queensland.

Noosa Hinterland Realty’s rental agent Olivia Dolan said her agency currently has no residential rentals advertised – they are gone before they become available. Ms Dolan attributes this low supply and high demand to a number of factors. “We currently have

S TA R H U N T I N G F O R C O A S T PRODUCERS & EXPERIENCES Sunshine Coast Council recently invited businesses from across the region to pitch their products and experiences to two multi-billion dollar companies - Brisbane Airport and The Star Entertainment Group - at Maroochydore RSL. The heavy hitters, who were on the Coast in search of produce, products and experiences that encapsulate Queensland, were introduced by Deputy Mayor Tim Dwyer.

Cr Dwyer shared that Queensland is experiencing the biggest growth ever in the last decade with a 330% increase.

“The opportunities are vast and we want the Sunshine Coast community to grab them with open arms,” he said. Star are embarking on their new three billion dollar venture at Queen’s Wharf in Brisbane - which will include five new hotels, 50 bars and cafes and are looking for quintissentially Qld products and experiences to offer their guests and high flyers. “We are looking for businesses willing to grow with us,” Ms Smith enthused.

by Sunshine Coast Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR). The application for the four pump station was initially lodged on 21 December 2017 but wasn’t properly lodged until 19 January 2018. Owners of the land, Raymond Charles Ladewig and wife Thelma, who also own

the Strawberry farm opposite the proposed site, consented to the Altum Constructions development application under the Planning Act 2016 by Project Urban. The application includes: a flood impact report, impact assessment report and site plans designed by Maroochydore Architecture firm Blackburne Jackson Design.

Division 9 Councillor Greg Rogerson stated that the

service station would have to be complementary to the village to gain approval. “And I would expect the development to also have a cafeteria and small convenience store,” Cr Rogerson said.

“Originally the developer had wanted to put a larger supermarket on the site but council didn’t approve of a supermarket on that site stating such a development would need

Plus there’s a finite amount of houses in this region. Ms Dolan explained whenever there’s a limited supply, owners can ask for more. “I had one property in Eerwah Vale recently have 20 applications – and that was a $500 a week property.”

Fighting for funds for our region

Prior to the election, local residents would remember that I supported a petition to provide a pedestrian access over the North Maroochy River at Seib Road - which received hundreds of signatures. Since being elected, during my regular meetings with Council and TMR, I have raised this issue a number of times and made a commitment to fight for this important project.

Earlier this year I also invited the Shadow Minister for Transport, Steve Minnikin, to the electorate to inspect the site. Concept plans have been drafted by Council and submitted to Transport and Main Roads (TMR), and I am continuing to work with both parties to secure funding for its construction. TMR have suggested that engineers need to confirm costings for the project, and I have been liaising with Cr Rogerson to progress these structural and engineering reports. While TMR have indicated it’s not on their current list of priorities, I will continue to work with council and TMR to ensure it is given the importance the community demands.

I’m aware this has been an ongoing issue for many years, and while it’s not a project I can deliver on my own overnight, I have listened to the community and will continue to fight for it.

On a regional basis, I am pleased to see the Federal Government has committed

funds for a multi-million upgrade to the Bruce Highway from Pine Rivers to Caloundra Road, as well as the longoverdue duplication of the north coast rail line. These important infrastructure projects will help slash commuter times and ease congestion across the region.

They can only proceed if the State Government contributes its share however, and with the State Budget looming, during the last sitting week, I put pressure on the government to ensure these vital congestion busting projects are delivered, asking the Transport and Main Roads Minister to confirm the funding in the Budget.

Eumundi Rotary Pride of Work Awards It was a great honour to be part of this year’s Pride of Work Awards. Congratulations to the award recipients, and to the Eumundi Rotary for recognising those who go the extra mile in their workplace. For a small community, there is a huge amount of passion amongst those who work and live here, and it was certainly inspiring to be part of an event showcasing it.

Arts OPEN HOUSE FOR A LAUGH Anywhere Theatre – a festival for any kind of performance in any kind of space – recently came to 4562 for a laugh. Despite the rain, six comedians, including Eumundi’s Anna Brennan and Carolyn Mandersloot from Gympie, performed for an audience of over 70, mostly locals. Organiser Robyn Hewitt explained, “The show supported upcoming local talent as well as bringing more experienced comics from Brisbane and interstate to the region.”

Lake Weyba local Mel Cole opened up her beautifully renovated 1950’s style home as a performance space. Mel shared, “I said yes instantly when my friend Robyn pitched her Comedy Lounge idea.”

“The concept of stand-up comedians performing in my lounge room never felt weird to me,” she said.

The evening was full of laughter and incredibly tasty food thanks to Wandering Chef and “all round legend” John Hutcheon.

“Anywhere Theatre was a

wonderful festival to get amongst, and I loved the buzz people got from the Comedy Lounge,” Mel shared.

“At one point I stood at the back of an audience of friends and interesting people and thought ‘how awesome that my house is filled with all this laughter?!’”

Mel pondered how cool it would be to get more local folks out and about and support these types of events. “They’re too good to miss out on – we need to have more local performances – anywhere and everywhere - next year!” Mel enthused.

Music SWEET SOUND OF AUGIE MARCH With their evocative and melodic new album Bootkins recently released, indie band Augie March are touring the country at the moment, hitting the big cities and making their many fans extremely happy.

Thanks to the efforts of the Imperial Hotel’s booking agent Alice Jones, Eumundi was also a stop on the band’s latest tour with around 200 Sunshine Coasters braving a cold and rainy night to swoon and sway to the soul piercing voice of Glenn Richards. Many a muso came to the concert waxing lyrical about Glenn’s incredible capacity to write poetic lyrics that cut to the heart.

A QUIET JOURNEY TO A S P E C I A L P L A C E Cheryl Webb, Eumundi Renowned pianist, producer and composer Michael Harvey has put together a collection of well-constructed original compositions for solo piano and plays them superbly on A Quiet Journey. The compositions draw on his wide range of artistic skills and the moods and emotions that he has experienced after a rich and rewarding career in music. A Quiet Journey, though a reflective title, is not necessarily an accurate description of the whole album.

There are a few bouncy, more flamboyant pieces that leave you in no doubt of what a fine technical player Michael is.

This album takes you to a special place and I just love it. It’s like putting on your favourite jumper and snuggling up to the warmth of the fire; it feels familiar. Michael has an exceptional wealth of experience in Australia and NZ having been a songwriter and composer in theatre, television, film and major events working 10

In recent years Michael took a break from playing, but his absence away from the piano has resulted in a depth and knowledge of composition and performance that confirms his place in the pantheon of Australian composers.

Kids PERFORMANCE COMP A WINNER This year the Breakthru School Music and Dance Competition, held at Sunshine Plaza, saw a record 570 primary and secondary singers, dancers and musicians participate in 49 performances in the four competition heats held to-date, with the 12 best performing acts – as voted by the public and competition judges – preparing to give it their all on the weekend in the hopes of sharing in the $30,000 prize pool.

Marimba Band; Good Shephard Lutheran College had orchestral and dance entries in both primary and secondary divisions; St Teresa’s Anglican College sent secondary dance and music entries; Noosa District State High School provided a music duo, and Eumundi State School entered their primary choir.

A few months ago, I wrote an article highlighting the incredible efforts of a very determined group of Eumundi locals. Recently, after 12 weeks of amped up training, those 20 Eumundi locals, including two very dedicated Eumundi Fitness trainers, smashed through eight kms of Spartan obstacles at Ivory Rocks in Brisbane.

By smashed through, I mean we: scaled walls, jumped barricades, kissed the dirt under barbwire, slid down mud slides, swam through neck high creeks, carried sand bags up mountains, stabbed walls with spears and dangled from near impossible angles. We worked our butts off (literally) and some even lost portions of clothing. Why? For the fun of it of course!

Actually, if you asked any of these athletes why they decided to do the 12 week Spartan Challenge, they would give completely different answers. The diversity of this group was huge with ages ranging from 21 to 50 plus.

We all had completely different fitness levels and most of us had never competed in an event like this ever before. What everyone

did have in common though was sheer drive and determination to commit, to train hard and to give it a crack!

The day kick-started with a two and a half hour bus ride. Unlike our usual training banter about sore glutes and who’s kids slept well last night, talk on the prerace bus was more about super serious precautionary issues: the best way to strap an ankle; best ointment for sore muscles; all-over body spray for sore muscles; best oil for post-race relaxation; and how to not put on a compression top while in a moving vehicle. After about 23

toilet stops, we arrived as true Eumundians should – the wrong way in and straight through the race on the Imperial Hotel courtesy bus. Boom! Eumundi is here! Not only were we the coolest looking compression gear models around, we were actually the biggest group to compete in the 9000-participant race! What an incredible effort from a small hinterland town!

After three hours of brutal fun, we all crossed that finish line together. We were covered in dirt, completely exhausted and hanging for those much anticipated words from Head

The Dressage Queensland Para Equestrian Committee have been conducting these events to find the next generation of Paralympic athletes. Events have recently been held in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast, but the Sunshine Coast was the largest yet with six riders attending together with families and supporters.

International Dressage Judge, Sue Bright, facilitated the day with explanations and information about Para Equestrian sport and competition opportunities and processes. Sue explained the classification system for people who experienced physical disability and discussed the options of the Special Olympics program for riders with other challenges such as Autism, as

It was a great opportunity for the riders to ride for such an accomplished judge and a stepping stone for their training.

At first they were nervous and felt they were being judged. It was great for them to put the nerves aside as they realised that they were just there to ride and to learn.

Heaven! However, there is no rest for these legends as there’s a new 12 week challenge beginning in June. You’ll see many locals embarking on a new training regime which will see them roll out onto the Sunshine Coast Marathon event this August. What an incredible way to keep our community fit and healthy, as well as build upon this strong community spirit that makes Eumundi such a brilliant place to live.

Health F L U VA C C I N E S H O R TA G E H I T S H O M E Queensland Health has reported an increase in demand for free flu vaccines across the State this year, with 45 per cent more flu vaccinations administered than at the same time last year.

Administration has released 9.6 million doses of flu vaccine into Australia across both the public sector and the private market.

In 2017, 8.3 million doses were released.

Eumundi Pharmacist Tania Watson said this is the first year the Eumundi Village Pharmacy has offered flu vaccinations, but believed there are more people wanting the vaccine because of the record flu season last year.

“We are running low on the flu vaccine with only 20 shots left for this season,” Ms Watson explained. “But initially having more vaccine would mean risking the medicine going out of date.”

Last Wednesday the Pharmacy Guild announced they had secured an additional 800,000 flu vaccines from overseas for the Australian market and these will be made available through June and July. But Ms Watson said she won’t be getting more vaccines for Eumundi. “You really want to be vaccinated before the season – by late May really. By mid-June everyone should be done.

Not everyone has hours to stand around the stove cooking their evening meal. Sometimes we need to make a meal that is quick, easy, delicious and nutritious.

This dish is a variation on a Caribbean rice dish that a friend of mine made for me recently. In the original dish, the rice is cooked in coconut milk. However this meal is perfect for using up left overs. We had made curry the night before and had lots of left over rice. I decided to experiment. I love meals that are easy to prepare and that use ingredients that I hold in my pantry, but presented in a unique way. This is delicious on its own for lunch or dinner, although I sometimes add a simple chicken dish cooked with herbs, garlic, and tomatoes for my meat eating family members. Enjoy, let nothing go to waste.

Ingredients • 1 red onion, chopped • 2 small green peppers, sliced • 1 tsp garlic, crushed • 1 tsp Italian herbs • ½ tsp smoked paprika • 1 cup coconut chips • 3 cups cooked rice

• Generous squeeze of lime juice Method Heat a small amount of oil and fry off onion and green peppers until soft.

Add garlic, herbs, paprika, coconut, rice and toss until well combined.

Bushcare: what does it mean?

Bushcare is another term for ecological restoration.

The Society for Ecological Restoration International defines ecological restoration as “the process of assisting the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded, damaged, or destroyed”. This is part of the South East Queensland Ecological Restoration Framework that many Bushcare groups and organisations use in SEQ, including Eumundi Bushcare Group.

Ecological Restoration is needed when we want to return a natural area to its previous state. If an area has been degraded for a long time the process will be complex and take a long time.

If the area has some native vegetation and some weed species then the weeds can be removed and the site can be allowed to regenerate with some assistance. This is the approach that we are using in the bushland surrounding Eumundi’s Sunken Garden.

When weed species are removed it allows space for natives to pop up. Hopefully native seeds will be laying in the soil (the seedbank) waiting for a disturbance and extra light. Otherwise seeds can be brought in via animals, either in their poop or stuck to their fur, or by wind.

Sometimes this type of natural regeneration is not enough on its own to bring the area back to its former glory. This is when revegetation can help.

Revegetation is usually used

to describe planting trees in an area. It is always best to select plants that are native to the area being planted. Even better still to use plants from the local Landcare that have collected seed in your area.

Sometimes it is good to leave some weed species on the site for a while rather than taking away large amounts of habitat and food. For example, lantana is a wonderful safe haven for many bird species and small mammals. Often the seedbank under lantana is full of natives (and weeds). We have left wild tobacco plants, another weed, on our property for a while now for the parrots and pigeons (we will remove them one day!). They love the tobacco fruit! There are many natives coming up around these weeds, eventually taking over the same role. This process is called succession.

We’re blessed to live an area of incredible natural and scenic beauty; ask any local and we’ll all have our own favourite hidden gem - that special place that so few seem to have discovered or explored. Well there’s one such place that belongs to all of us and it’s a true local treasure yet it remains underexplored or poorly understood by many - locals and visitors alike. That place is the Noosa Botanic Gardens on the shores of Lake Macdonald.

The gardens are around five kilometres north of Cooroy, up Lake Macdonald Dr. Covering around eight hectares they are on what was once farmland.

The land was resumed by Council in the late 1950’s to become part of the catchment for Lake Macdonald, the main water supply for our region.

The actual site of the garden suffered a mixed fate over the years. For quite some time it was a local dumping ground for everything from rubbish to car bodies before local resident Ida Duncan approached council for permission to clear the site.

The request was granted and Ida and a group of dedicated locals set about clearing the area of weeds and rubbish before development of the gardens formally started in 1987. In 1990 the Noosa Botanic Gardens officially opened to the public.

Today the gardens are breathtakingly beautiful, serene and tranquil in equal measure. Rolling lawns abound, as do deeply shaded

tropical groves, flowering walks and a multitude of places to picnic or just stop and take a deep breath. An awesome feature of the gardens is the Greek-style amphitheatre overlooking the lake; its incredible acoustics making it a wonderful performance space.

Of course the gardens also feature a phenomenal diversity of plants and wildlife; you’ll find plant and animal lovers can lose themselves for hours. So what keeps these gardens going? The gardens are administered by Noosa Council who provide funding and staff for the hard yakka maintenance, but it’s the work of a small group of dedicated volunteers that really makes the gardens hum. The Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens may be small in number but their work is just incredible.

Cont’d from pg 17 They conduct regular maintenance through the gardens, host guided walks and work tirelessly to raise funds for projects such as their new propagation facility that will grow plants to sell for fundraising through their various events and for planting back into the gardens.

The Friends will soon be stepping things up a gear or two, and plan to introduce a regular series of talks and workshops on a range of topics. Topics from plants and gardening, to sustainability and environment, to indigenous culture and land-use and lots more are on the drawing board.

If you want a taste of the gardens you can visit anytime, seven days a week, but two upcoming events are excellent opportunities to make a day of it.

On 15 July the Friends will host a guided winter walk through the gardens, a great way to learn more about their beauty and history.

On September 2nd the Friends flagship event will be on - their annual Fathers Day Plant Fair.

This is a brilliant way to spend the day browsing through an

enormous range of stalls from a host of plant growers and all manner of garden and outdoor lifestyle businesses. There’ll also be talks, entertainment and great food.

The Friends can’t do any of the things they do without community support, so you can help them in any number of ways. If you become a paid Friends supporter you’ll be plugged into upcoming events and receive discounts on plants, plus have preferential booking access and discounts on paid workshops. You might want to take it to the next level and volunteer in our nursery or in the gardens - which is an awesome way to meet like-minded folk, learn a little and maybe share your skills and be a part of this wonderful place. Remember, these are our gardens, your gardens! Much of what happens at Lake Macdonald can only do so because of local’s support.
