“After researching all of the Eumundi and surrounding area real estate agents, it became apparent that Kess Prior of Hinternoosa, sold country property with big City professionalism. We chose Kess to sell our home at Eumundi and we weren’t let down. Her honesty, humour and integrity were first to none. She was everything a real estate agent should be - she gave us amazing advice that got us a lot more for our property than we expected.”

Notes Editor’s note ... Eumundi prides itself on being an environmentally conscious, creative community. Come 1 July we get to test our mettle as the State Government ban on the use of single-use plastic bags by local businesses is enforced. The real challenge is phasing out the use of ALL plastic! Is such a thing even possible? Perhaps we start with plastic bags, then move onto takeaway cups, plastic straws and non-reusable drink bottles... challenge accepted?! Hazard of working from home...

Drag Queen Bingo was another huge success. A full house enjoyed the games and giggles. Money was raised for birthing kits destined for PNG and sponsoring a local youth to the National Youth Science Forum. Thanks to all those who joined in. The birthing kits were well supported and many were surprised to hear that 1 in every 30 deliveries ends in the death of the mother, making PNG the most dangerous place in the world to have a baby. Each kit costs only $6 and some effort in cutting sheets and packaging. We hope to send 100 this year and perhaps more. Our recent membership evening saw 14 new members signing up to join Rotary - all interested in progressing “Service above Self” and sharing the local camaraderie and community service. We are looking forward to our changeover night where we welcome a new president and directors. Thanks goes to Peter Syson, our outgoing president, and directors. Congratulations to Tania Broadbent, our incoming president, and her board. Interested in knowing more about Rotary? We meet at the CWA Hall on a Thursday night at 5.30pm.

Co-Founder and Chair of FAN, Jacqui Wilson-Smith with Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien MP (left) and Senator Zed Seselja, Assistant Minister for Science, Jobs and Innovation. Food and Agribusiness Network (FAN) has been awarded a significant financial boost with $900,000 from Food Innovation Australia Ltd (FIAL). The funding will help not-for-profit FAN with improving capabilities to engage with national and international markets and global supply chains. Peter Schutz, FIAL’s Chairman, said, “We’re delighted to go on this journey, guide and support the winners to solve common challenges, innovate, and grow the competitive advantage of their regions.” This first-of-its-kind program provides matched funding to support new and existing clusters in their quest to address a common purpose they otherwise could not solve on their own. Co-Founder and Chair of FAN, Jacqui WilsonSmith said this funding will have far reaching consequences, “FAN believes it can create a sustainable, industry-led cluster model that pivots around a collaborative approach to addressing shared challenges and opportunities. This could be replicated in other regions

around Australia and has the potential to become an Australian best-practice model for cluster development.” Sunshine Coast Council Economic Development Portfolio Cr Steven Robinson congratulated FAN on securing the funding which will contribute towards its vision of becoming Australia’s leading food and agribusiness network. “FAN has had some great success in building local connections and industry capacity and in developing the local - to international pathway of locally produced goods, working with local success stories.” FAN general manager Emma Greenhatch shared that in 2017, the food and agribusiness industry in the Sunshine Coast region was valued at $700 million, which was an increase of $30m on 2016. It also directly employs around 5,000 people. “This funding will help us with our goal to increase this to $1 billion by 2022 and see exports double to $130 million in the same period,” Ms Greenhatch said.

A non-partisan community meeting was held recently to discuss the proposed Our Village Development at the Butter Factory and old service station sites. The community were given the opportunity to offer support or raise concerns with the developer Ms Louise Formosa and town planner Ms Pam Davidson (employed by Ms Formosa) who have been working on the project for the last 18 months. Cr Greg Rogerson was also available to provide information on the Sunshine Coast Council process for such developments. The vision for the Our Village Development is an eco-hub of retail, office and healing spaces selling essential goods and services. The old, dilapidated buildings - Highway Motors and Butter Factory - the old railway corridor, and dwellings on Cook St will be renovated and reinvented along with additional creative areas including a piazza and deck.

lining Memorial Drive. The point was raised that what the town is really crying out for is smaller, more affordable, housing options. Ms Formosa assured that the developers had done extensive research into what would work best in this space for the businesses, community and market visitors. The other major concern expressed was traffic flow and the need for better infrastructure diagonally opposite the development (around the school) on Caplick Way including a footpath, bus shelter and roundabout. Longtime community advocate Joyce Turnbull said a roundabout for Caplick Way was highlighted as necessary by Council back in 2005, yet the infrastructure remains absent. Now that the Our Village developers want to revitilise this neglected space, Council are making them front much of the cost for the roundabout.

Overall the community group Cont’d on pg 18 expressed enthusiasm for seeing the rundown site at the entrance to the village developed with an eco-friendly bent that is in keeping with the community ethos. But the major concern seemed to be the building of more shops within the township when there are already many Impressive turnout for the community empty shop fronts meeting on a rainy night.

The Curra Community Hall designed by Bark Architects was awarded for Public Architecture. Australian Institute of Architects announced the winners of the 2018 Queensland Architecture Awards recently with three of our region’s architecture firms awarded for their modern take on hinterland living. Architects Lindy Atkin and Stephen Guthrie of Bark Design in Tinbeerwah, were awarded for ‘Public Architecture’ for the Curra Community Hall, at Curra near Gympie, and ‘Urban Design’ for the Beerwah Tower Green at Beerwah in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. The Queensland Architectural Awards jury acknowledged the, “process of intense community engagement,” in the awarded Curra Hall project, noting the design responded directly to its context “referencing rural character through materials and clarity of form.” The Beerwah Tower Green, complete with butterfly towers

which attract and provide a food source for the endangered Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, is part of the Sunshine Coast Council’s Beerwah Streetscape Masterplan. Stephen said the awards were a win for providing good design outcomes in regional communities, with public architecture now more valued for the positive contribution it can make including enhancing civic pride, reinvigorating spaces, providing a sense of place and bringing communities together. With the impending arrival of the plastic bag ban date, Eumundi’s Boomerang bag group met in the CWA hall last Friday afternoon for an epic sewing session. A group of around 20 women and a crew of helpful kids cut, pinned, sewed and overlocked over 100 more bags. One of the core group organisers Hayley Holloway said Eumundi Boomerang Bags has been preparing for the singleuse plastic ban for a few months by busily making bags so they have plenty to go around. “We’re supplying nine local shops at the moment and we’ve been talking to other retailers about what they’re doing and how they are preparing for 1 July,” she said.

influence to reduce it - this is my contribution,” she said.

When asked why people volunteer, Hayley shared all involved have different reasons. “For me personally it’s a sense of giving back to the community, as well as the strong environmental message this particular project addresses.

facebook @BoomerangBagsEumundi.

The group relies solely on donated fabrics and old men’s ties which are used for handles. The whole premise is to reuse and recycle to make the bags - but the group need more! Any non-stretch fabrics can be dropped off at Humdrum Espresso or the Eumundi Pharmacy. The group recently bought an overlocker for ‘gun sewer’ Gill and storage cabinets for the CWA hall with money raised from the Night Markets. Boomerang Bags plan to be out and about in Eumundi on Sunday 1 July with a stack of Boomerang Bags to give away. qldbagban.com.au

Community groups keep the wheels turning in Eumundi. For the first time in a long time I was unable to attend this year’s Rotary Club of Eumundi Pride of Work Awards, due to another commitment in Kenilworth. By all reports, it was an outstanding event – not that we’d expect anything less from the Rotary club which does a stellar job running all of its events & fundraisers right throughout the year. In fact, the entire Eumundi community is absolutely first rate when it comes to planning and running events which attract people from other parts of our region and South East Queensland. I’m talking about events like the Eumundi Sculpture Prize, World Cinema, the Long Lunch, the Thai Festival, the Unearthed Exhibition and many, many more! It’s one of many elements which highlight the very strong civic pride in Eumundi. I urge everyone to make themselves familiar with the Experience Eumundi website, experienceeumundi.com.au/ events, so you can stay up-to-

date with all that’s happening in and around the town – I guarantee you’ll never be stuck for something to do! Speaking of drawcards in Eumundi, the upgraded Dick Caplick Park playground is proving quite the hit with youngsters from all corners of the Sunshine Coast! Division 10 is such a diverse area and one of my key priorities as Councillor has been to ensure that each town has its own unique point-of-difference which symbolises its character and draws visitors in from outside the area. To ensure we hit the mark in this regard with the Dick Caplick Park playground, I contributed an additional $35,000 of divisional funding. The end result is a bigger, higher and better playground which youngsters absolutely love! This great playground also contributes to making Eumundi a destination for tourists and residents, 365 days a year, rather than just the two market days of Wednesday and Saturday.

HIGH TEA FILLS HALL Sunshine Coast foodie Martin Duncan wants to return community spirit and reignite life into the wonderful old halls of the Sunshine Coast with his Scone Time events. They are a wonderful opportunity for older people, along with their carers, companions and family to establish a regular monthly social event. Recently hosted in Cooroy’s newly renovated Memorial Hall, Martin said “I was very excited to have 90 attend the inaugural Scone Time. The posies of fresh flowers, antique napery and old world tea sets along with pianist Adam Bishop, set the scene for seniors to enjoy a great cup of tea and scones over a chat with our local volunteers! It was truly magic!” sunshinecoastfoodie.com.au

Arts SECOND BEE HOUSE UNVEILED ‘Yurin was a man who didn’t like to share. He did wrong things to people and his favourite food was native honey. Yurin marked all the trees with native bee’s nests so that other families couldn’t touch his trees. Aboriginal people are very spiritual and superstitious and they wished something bad would happen to Yurin – they wished the bees would turn on him and one day the bees did swarm Yurin and he dug down into the ground to get away from them. His digging made the passage and formed Godwin Beach and Bribie. He dug deeper and deeper and stayed until the bees left. He later emerged as a crab.’ Story told by Lyndon Davis.

FUNDING NEEDED FOR FINAL EXHIBIT ION 2018 Anne Harris with Shane Christenson (right).

The second in a series of three hand carved, native bee hives was installed last week at Noosa Pengari Steiner School in Doonan. The collaborative work which represents the story of Yurin the Crab from indigenous culture, was designed by lovely local Lyndon Davis, and beautifully carved by Shane Christenson.

Its time to share the stories of collaboration, creativity, bees and trees. The exhibition will share the background and stories of the many artists involved in the project and the work created, giving legacy to the collective story. Final projects include a commissioned artwork by Shane Christensen and Jandamarra Cadd that will be placed on permanent public display, creating another home for native bees; and a video about the iconic Bunya Tree, featuring Aunty Bev Hand. The Exhibition will run at the Noosa Regional Gallery Qld from 7 December. australianculturalfund.org. au/projects/tree-placeexhibition-2018.

The hive is made from an ancient tree that was rescued from the tip by Eumundi artisan Anne Harris. The purchase of the tree, cut down in Doonan in 2015, has set Anne onto a remarkable path of collaborative workshops and exhibitions about art, the environment, indigenous culture and this hinterland place in country. The project called ‘Tree Place’ has highlighted the creative skills of many talented locals for the community to enjoy. The third Bee Hive will be ready in a few months and is another collaboration between these awesome locals using the salvaged tree. It will be installed at Eumundi State School.

Music SOLDIER SONGS AND VOICES: MUSIC AS THERAPY What could be better than sitting on the veranda of The Imperial Hotel in Eumundi on a lovely autumn day, blue sky and plenty of sun, listening to three blokes playing guitar? That’s how it was recently when I dropped in on Alan Kelly passing on his musical skills to Shane Storer and Mark Osmond. Alan has taken on the Soldiers Songs and Voices for the last few months and has found it very rewarding. And some well-known Australian musicians are also getting involved, including country singer James Blundell, and folk artists Fred Smith and Kevin Bennett. Vocalist and guitarist Alan Kelly is originally from Dublin, but now lives in Doonan and sings traditional and original songs in the Irish language as well as English and French. His group,

The Barley Shakes, are well known to hinterlanders and Celtic music lovers across the Sunshine Coast. The use of the arts as therapy is not new, even in the defence forces. The Australian Army currently runs a program called ADF Arts for Recovery, Resilience, Teamwork and Skills, a four-week course for serving ADF personnel that teaches ex-soldiers how to express themselves through the visual arts, creative writing, music and drama with a performance/ presentation at the end.

and play guitar - Alan’s plan is to get his charges proficient with playing, then move them to writing lyrics with the aim of putting it all together into songs. While this is potential goal, there’s no pushing as this is a relaxing process, just getting those involved in touch with their creative side. Shane, an ex-helicopter

crewman, came from Perth where he enjoyed the fellowship of learning piano with a group, and came across Soldiers Songs and Voices on the web. He believes it is a great concept, helping with some mental issues and will be continuing his involvement. The group meet every two weeks on a Thursday around lunchtime.

The current group is about eight, and while some have had musical experience others have just had a desire to play an instrument while others wish to begin writing music. At this stage they mostly sit around

MARIMBA STUDENTS BREAKING THRU AGAIN North Arm State School (NASS) students wowed the audience at Sunshine Plaza Breakthru Music and Dance competition winning first place in the Primary Music category for the second year. The students are part of the NASS extension Marimba band and rehearse in their lunch breaks at school several times each week.

Breakthru is about celebrating creativity and there was such diversity on Saturday - rock bands, contemporary dance, hip-hop, musical numbers. The enthusiasm and energy of the children makes this such a great event. The winners received a $3000 cheque for the school and the winning students all shared in $1000 gift vouchers.

What made the win even more pleasing is that the children did it without the guidance of their music teacher and mentor, Steve Pead. Mr Pead was unable to attend the final, but the students didn’t let that deter them instead it made them even more determined to do their best and to make their teacher proud.

Marimba is a percussion instrument (like a giant xylophone) consisting of a set of wooden bars struck with mallets called knobs to produce musical tones. Resonators or pipes suspended underneath the bars amplify sound. Students at North Arm State School learn to play the Marimbas in their weekly 12

Music lessons, from Prep to Year 6. This program has been led with passion and skill, under the expertise of Mr Pead, who thrives

on creating opportunities for the students to perform in ‘real life gigs’, which they have done for the past 16 years.

Music D E D I C AT E D M U S I C I A N The Chorale and Noosa Sinfonia, performed Concertedly Baroque on 26 May at the J, with soloists from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Annika Hinrichs (soprano), Melissa Gregory (soprano), Cassandra Wright (mezzo soprano), Ronan King-Rose (tenor) and Henry Pinder (bass). Eumundi’s Trish Corben played violin at Noosa Chorale’s inaugural performance of Handel’s Messiah 24 years ago and she has missed only one classical concert by the choir since that time. “You could say I have a 99% record,” she says. “The one when I didn’t play was in 1997 and I had to go overseas to visit someone who was ill.”

Jim Fagan, Eumundi

A former leader of the Occasional Orchestra and the Sunshine Coast Choral Society Orchestra, Trish along with Chorale music director, Adrian King, formed the Noosa Sinfonia in 2007. She is an unabashed fan of the Chorale and says the quality and standard of performance has been brought to new levels by Adrian, “perhaps because he understands singing so well.”

Trish’s partner in life as well as music is oboe player Ronald Webb. They met, as you would expect, through playing in Coast orchestras. Ronald came to Noosa from Wellington in 1994 following his retirement from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra after 33 years, 27 of which he was principal oboe. He has played professionally in the U.K., Europe, Spain, the U.S. and in Australia with the Sydney,

Trish was again in the violin section of the Noosa Sinfonia for the Chorale’s Baroque concert and said the choir did a “fantastic job of what was some very hard music.” She gained a Bachelor of Music degree at Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and was a member of the Australian Youth Orchestra for three years. She taught violin and viola and directed string groups in Melbourne and Adelaide before moving to Noosa in 1992.

Queensland and St Andrew’s Symphony Orchestras. “I first became involved in 1996 when Leonard Spira asked me to join his Occasional Orchestra and we accompanied the Chorale.” Ronald played in the Baroque concert and when asked what he thought of the Chorale’s work, he said he “enjoyed it very much. They do put their heart and soul into things, don’t they?”

The Eumundi Book Club has been meeting for nearly ten years. Supported by Berkelouw Books, it has held several successful open book club nights. Although its membership has changed somewhat, the format (each member chooses a book and leads the discussion around it) remains the same and the book club continues to thrive. Leela Rottman is the current book club coordinator. I asked her about her experience as a member and coordinator. What brought you to the Eumundi book club? I was in another book club before, on the Coast. The coordinator was very good. She looked after and inspired everyone. There was one person with dementia who came and was encouraged to remain. However, the venue was a very uninspiring RSL hall, and the conversation didn’t really engage me. They were probably a bit put off by the whole oxygen tanks thing, which I need to have but can be hard for people to see past sometimes. It was a good supportive group, but it wasn’t enough of a challenge for me. I wanted to be with people who love very good books and know what they are. Somebody told me about this book club and I remember how I liked the rules for the group: Read the book! Read the book! Let us know if you can’t come! The first novel was great Amnesia by Peter Carey. I really enjoyed it and I loved the discussion that followed. The intelligent comments were a bit intimidating, but so enjoyable. The venue at Berkelouw’s was lovely and accommodating. We were surrounded by all these old books and wooden bookshelves and I thought I was exactly where I wanted to be. I had found my home.

What do you think you’ve gained from running the book club? Something to keep me occupied in this world, because with my current state of health I don’t have a lot of responsibility. It allows me to be functional about something, gives a sense of responsibility. To have one function and do it as well as I can. I’ve learnt a lot about other people’s tastes and interests. I think the main thing is to keep learning. I have a lot of trouble admitting I don’t know things and I’ve dropped that. I’m happy to learn from others. We have a lot of knowledgeable, intelligent people in the group with different experiences. I want to absorb and learn. Your favourite book/books? For book club, probably, Eleanor Ferrante’s, My Brilliant Friend. Everyone became engaged. There was so much to discuss about the book and the writer. The Natural way of Things, by Charlotte Wood is another book, which I loved, that everyone had definite opinions about. Lots of good discussion!

B O O K S WA P L O C AT I O N S The hinterland has two book swap locations: Affogato Gelato & Coffee, Memorial Dr, Eumundi, has a shelf of used books ready for reading; and Hinterland Feijoas in Belli Park, open every Saturday, and has a few drawers full of books for swapping.

Outdoors L I V I N G B A C K YA R D Rats! Rats have always been on the unwanted list on our property. They are thought of as a pest as they attract snakes and chew through wires in your ceiling. However, I have somehow just inherited three domestic pet rats and now have them living inside my house! So what is it about pet rats that make them such good pets? I am only on day four of owning these little furry creatures and I am already in love. “The girls” seek attention from me and try and get out of their cage for a cuddle. I own a lot of different types of animals, and most don’t mind a cuddle here and there, but these rats have serious affection in their genes. It turns out that rats are quite smart and they are also very playful which makes them more interesting than free to air TV. Caring for rats does take time and commitment just like any other pet. However, so far I have found them easier to

QLD GARDEN SHOW KEEPS GROWING

Kirstie Henning, North Arm

care for than guinea pigs, mice and birds. One of the huge positives is you can toilet train them. This means you can have a poop tray. Clean it out each day and there is hardly any smell. Their diet needs consist of some dry foods, or a rat mix, along with some fresh fruit and vegetables. Feeding time is fun as they will come and choose their favourite food out of your hand and they will hold the food in their hands while they nibble. So cute! As rats can be food for snakes, they either need to be kept inside or if outside in a snake proof enclosure with plenty of hiding places to get out of the cold weather in winter. Domestic rats can live for 3 to 4 years on average and they do require the company of at least one other rat (of the same sex or you will end up with hundreds!). I rate these little critters highly for people that want an easy to care for and fun pet. animalfarmsunshinecoast.com

Outdoors W I L D L I F E C E N T R E U P D AT E How time flies and the season’s change. We are just starting to witness the taste of winter; autumn has finally bid farewell. At the Wildlife Centre we have finally seen a drop in our patient admissions. All spring babies

Vicki Toomey, Eumundi

have now left us, with the last of the breeding season babies making their way in the wild. Our naughty Red Neck Wallaby joeys have been moved onto larger pastures and are grazing further afield from the Centre. Below is a picture of Evie and Todd just before they departed.

We are still seeing a few Rainbow lorikeets in care, recovering from their mystery illness of Lorikeet Paralysis Syndrome, but mostly now it is quieter on the bird front. Soon we will see more possum babies come through. History shows us we can predict

seasons for different babies. Time now affords us a chance to recuperate at the Centre and catch our breath. We plan to revamp aviaries for the oncoming spring months, where new patients will come in aplenty once again. Until then, we embrace the calm and less hectic time that winter brings.

Cr Rogerson responded saying it is fair and reasonable for Council to expect contribution for the roundabout, but as part of public infrastructure Council would contribute – an unspecified amount.

“Providing carefully considered designs to benefit regional communities is something which is very close to our hearts,” Stephen said.

Resident and school parent Tenielle Williams said the area was already horrible at school drop off and the school was continuing to grow. Eumundi Ward St resident Helen Woolway expressed concern about increased vehicle traffic on Ward and Cook streets. Ms Davidson explained that the roundabout on Caplick way would help traffic flow and school traffic safety. Eumundi local Anthony Everingham expressed concern about market parking and how the new development would manage traffic so locals could access the shops in the development. He also expressed reservations about the impact on the natural beauty of the town. Ms Formosa said parking for locals at the Hub on market days was still a work in progress. In regard to clearing the greenery along the railway corridor she assured, “We won’t be chopping all the trees down at once, but we will be phasing out the weed

Lindy shared that Bark’s approach always starts with identifying and then highlighting the location’s key features. “It’s something we really enjoy as we always aim for site specific design solutions which contribute to the region’s unique sense of place,” she said. “As locals, this aspect of our practice is particularly satisfying as we are leaving an architectural legacy which benefits our own community” she explained. Other local firms receiving commendations were David Teeland of Teeland Architecture in Doonan, for the Tinbeerwah House design; and Jolyon Robinson of Robinson Architects for the Avonlea house in Eumundi.

Architects render of the Our Village Piazza. variables over time and replacing with natives.”

These award-winning projects will now be considered for the National Architecture Awards, announced in November.

Eumundi Historical Association Chair Donata Page said she had great reservations about the project being called “Our Village” when the whole township is our village. Ms Formosa replied, “We don’t see this hub as having borders. We want to encourage businesses to embrace this environment and we’d be happy for everyone to embrace this hub.”

Avonlea House in Eumundi, designed by Robinson Architects, was commended.

The period for comment on the proposed development Cnr Memorial Dr and Cook St closes on 22 June. Written submissions can be sent to mail@sunshinecoast.qil.gov.au.

Teeland Architects received a commendation at the AIA 2018 Queensland Architecture Awards for their Tinbeerwah House.
