Notes A HINTERLAND MOMENT
WHERE TO GET YOUR GREEN… We want to get the Green into the hands of more locals who want to read it.
Editor’s note ...
You can pick up a Green…
A truly successful business or community group is one that evolves into a local meeting place – somewhere welcoming that acts as a hub for locals. A place to do a course or workshop, make something, enjoy a meal, a dance and a sing with live music... Somewhere you feel you belong. Our Hinterland can claim a number of special places like this, but last week Doonan lost one (see page 5). When passionate locals selflessly put themselves into a heartfelt endeavour, we all benefit from the community spirit it radiates.

If you’re part of a not-for-profit struggling to keep the cash flowing to fund your important works - we’ve got an offer too good to refuse! Experience Eumundi currently pays out more than $60,000 every year to volunteer groups who commit to shifts on either Wednesday or Saturday mornings to greet and assist thousands of visitors to our world famous markets as they park their car. All you need is a smile and a commitment from your group to a shift of a minimum of 2 people for up to 4 hours. It could be just one shift a month. Your group will be paid $22 per person / per hour - so if you committed to just a couple of shifts a month, the group could earn several thousand dollars each year. What’s not to like about that? Business EUMUNDI CHAMBER REPORT Chamber’s breakfast functions have become a great forum for business owners to network with others in different sectors of the economy where knowledge and opportunities can be shared. As a result of networking efforts of the management committee, Chamber has been able to build closer relationships with Sunshine Coast Council, State and Federal government as well as Visit Sunshine Coast and Noosa Tourism. As a consequence Eumundi Chamber is recognised as a key community group to connect local businesses with these stakeholders. As Eumundi is now represented as a sub region within the Visit Sunshine Coast Destination program, the marketing strategy for Chamber has entered a whole new level. The Chamber management committee were heavily involved in assisting Experience Eumundi with the Horizon festival and shortly after Chamber delivered on the 50 Year Anniversary events within the township

After a number of brainstorming sessions over chamber’s new website, the direction we intend to adopt is a strong focus on providing members with business related services, support and information. Community EUMUNDI NOOSA ROAD CONCERNS RAISED BY LOCALS W I T H D A N P U R D Y Dan Purdie MP, Member for Ninderry Locals would be well aware that I have been working closely with the Department of Transport and Main Rd (TMR) and Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) to fix the Seib Rd Bridge. In the meantime, I’ve also been approached about other safety concerns with the Eumundi Noosa Rd. Last month, I met with local resident Vonnie Burton, who gave me
a copy of a petition calling for safety upgrades to the Cash Rd intersection. I raised this issue with Council and TMR and met with TMR onsite earlier this month to look at options. The recent meeting at Cash Rd was to update a group of around 30 locals on the progress of those discussions. TMR have now committed to a
planning study to look at future upgrades of the full length of Eumundi Noosa Rd. This has been funded and will commence later this year. In the meantime, I am working closely with them to upgrade the line marking at the Cash Rd intersection to allow for a possible turning lane. I’ve also requested a speed review of the area be completed, with a view to reducing the speed from

Eumundi bin art Eumundi is looking even brighter and more colourful now thanks to a terrific new community-initiated art project. A dozen artists from the Sunshine Coast and interstate have put their talents to work on the Caplick Way underpass and the bin art panels in Memorial Drive. The works were created during last year’s Horizon Festival as a legacy cultural project for the community and a great example of how to repurpose grey utilitarian objects to become a living, breathing artistic canvas. I’d like to say a big thankyou to the Eumundi and District Community Organisation, Experience Eumundi, Eumundi Chamber of Commerce and the Eumundi Historical Association for contributing funding towards this $10,000 project. Removing invasive plants Council is set to continue its work on weeding out restricted and prohibited invasive pest plants listed in the Biosecurity Act 2014 following endorsement of the Pest Survey Program. The 12-month inspection program is designed to monitor the presence and extent of invasive plants in selected areas across
the region, including locations such as Eumundi, Doonan and Eerwah Vale. Invasive plants listed as priorities in council’s Biosecurity Plan will be targeted, including Groundsel bush, rat’s tail grasses, Parthenium and Salvinia. During the program, council officers will conduct inspections of privately owned land on properties with land size equal to or greater than 4000m2 within the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area. Officers will inspect properties to confirm the presence or absence of invasive plants, monitor the effectiveness of control measures being undertaken, collect samples and provide information and education to help property owners with controlling these invasive weeds. Farming in the future The Future of Farming will be the topic of an educational afternoon at Vertical Farm Systems in North Arm on Thursday 26 July, 1.15pm. You will hear from three guest speakers followed by an informative and delicious networking BBQ. Register via the Food and Agriculture Network.

Books WOMEN AND POWER
Judith Pattison, Doonan
The Eumundi Book club is half way through its foray into feminist literature and we’re enjoying the journey! One of our discoveries is just how rich and varied the choices are. Something for everyone. From historical biography: Romantic Outlaws: The Extraordinary Lives of Mary Wollstonecraft and Her Daughter Mary Shelley (Charlotte Gordon), to modern Australian crime fiction: An Isolated Incident (Emily Maguire) to the 1980’s classic, The Colour Purple (Alice Walker). We’ve also included two recent and celebrated titles, Women and Power: A Manifesto, by Oxford Classics Don, Mary Beard, and Bad Feminist by well-known (including as a guest on Q and A) black American academic and social commentator, Roxanne Gay. They may seem very different on the surface, but on closer inspection have much in common. Both were written before the ‘MeToo” movement and recent events have validated their theories. Both make complex ideas accessible and relatable; both use their own experiences to make the personal political with humour. Beard uses her impeccable qualifications to trace the origins of female silencing back to its earliest examples in Greek and Roman antiquity up to the present including her own experiences with Twitter, by taking “the long view on the culturally awkward relationship between the voice of women and the public sphere of speech-making, debate and comment.” She wants us to do more than merely recognise misogyny, but more importantly, to explain it and to find effective solutions. The Guardian’s Rachel Cook said, “In tracing the roots of misogyny to Athens and Rome, Mary Beard has produced
a modern feminist classic.” As a bonus, it’s a beautiful little book, well worth owning. In Bad Feminist, a series of essays on modern culture and life (including the mad world of Scrabble competition!) Roxanne Gay bravely examines her own contradictions, “I’m trying to lead in a small imperfect way; raising my voice as a bad feminist offering insights into our culture and how we consume it. I call for more inclusive measures for literary excellence… and the limits of “diversity”. Gay says, “These essays, like feminism, are flawed, but they come from a genuine place… The more I write, the more I put myself out into the world as a bad feminist but, I hope, a good woman” There is much to entertain and enlighten in these two excellent books coming from such different perspectives.

Arts I N S P I R AT I O N U N D E R F O O T Local Doonan artist Fiona Groom explores the world of dirt and leaves with her latest exhibition entitled Unearth at The Butter Factory Arts Centre in Cooroy, opening 27 July at 6pm. Fiona is known for her expressive paintings that capture an animal’s personality,
but recently has found inspiration underfoot. “Leaf litter is full of hidden surprises under the rocks and inside the fallen logs is a hidden world of animals living a life that’s all about survival, camouflage and adaptation.”
Fiona explains this collection as a snapshot of that life. “A reminder of what can be lost if we don’t preserve our gardens and bushland.” “The deeper the leaf litter and decaying plant matter, the more diverse life can be found - cicadas tunnel into the soil to finish growing - and above them on the surface ants, spiders, centipedes all crawl around
looking for food. “It is these basic inhabitants that are the foundation of all life in our forests, therefore keeping natural bush land is vital - without this simple layer of leaf and dirt hundreds of species will not survive and the diversity of animal life that we know will not be present,” Fiona said. fmgfionagroomvisualartist.com
PERFORMING ARTS ON OFFER This Friday a feast of performing arts will be on offer at the Noosa Alive festival and Doonan’s Johanne Wright can’t wait. Johanne, who has been the event’s Director since December 2013, shared she loves the festival’s uniqueness. “The surprise performers and speakers who dazzle, wow and create magic for all who come to attend.“ Over the last six years Johanne has enjoyed helping the careers of local talent and 10

developing cultural partnerships between regional, national and international cultural organisations. “I am very excited and proud to be part of this, in my last year as President,” Johanne enthused. Johanne said there are 14 premiere performances this year – one of which features another two Doonan locals, singer Katie Noonan and saxophonist Zac Hurren. The pair are performing as part of Katie Noonan’s Elixir with Michael Leunig and string quartet Gratitude and Grief.
Kids R A I N B O W S TA R G R E E T I N G C A R D Hejira Convery & Ajuna Joyce, Eumundi Make time for some craft and creation with this kid-friendly project. You’ll need: • White cardboard • Coloured paper • Pencil • Gluestick • Scissors • Glitter Step 1: Make a greeting card by cutting out a rectangle of cardboard, folding it in half and gluing coloured paper inside.
Step 2: Cut out five squares of coloured paper (red, orange, yellow, green and blue). Pile the paper pieces on top of one another and draw a large star on the top sheet. Step 3: Keep the paper pieces together and cut out the star shape (careful, scissors are sharp). Remove the top star from the stack and cut the edges off the remaining pieces of coloured paper to make a smaller star.
“To have the legal side of separation managed in such a professional and diligent manner was a weight lifted off me, allowing me to spend more valuable and precious time with my beautiful son…” DARREN, DOONAN.
Step 4: Keep removing sheets of paper and cutting away the star shape until you have five different-sized stars in five different colours. Clay and sticks are moulded to form bodies of all shapes and sizes; costumes of leaves create a range of characters, and eyes of berries bring them into existence. These are the main ingredients that transform these objects from nature to evolve into a fierce monster, a midnight warrior and all other kinds of wild creatures. They are watching you with deep, passionate eyes unlike our own. They always were and always are my woodland

creatures. The joy of creating these beings is like nothing in the world matters to me. Oh the games you can play, the fun you can have - is there anything better? Play like this cannot be found in city or town backyards, only in our hinterland backyards where nature abounds. A mixture of ingredients provided by nature and play brings my woodland creatures to life with fierce intensity. To me it is like a force of nature or magic at work, or maybe it is just my imagination. A warrior with a warm, kind
heart and wisdom held behind intelligent eyes. Coffee monsters and magnificent vultures battle battalions of these warriors who are protecting their master. Every one of them is a different character that was originally held in nature’s precious folds. If your nature-filled hinterland backyard provides these mystical character ingredients to you, this too can become your exclusive toyshop. This is my awesome weekend in the hinterland filled with fun, creativity and imagination.

INTRO TO HORSES RDA Sunshine Coast in North Arm is offering able bodied kids aged from eight years-old the chance to learn about horses and gain some basic riding skills. Ready Set Trot is an inclusive Saturday program starting on 28 July. Bookings admin@scrda.org.au
A retired school teacher, Doug, who has been a part of the small and mighty Eumundi based rugby club since 2008, said, “When you paid for your child to play Rugby at your local club you didn’t just pay for affiliation fees, (with the SCRU, QRU and ARU), a club strip or field equipment.” • You pay for your child to develop resilience - not to give up even when the going gets tough, both physically and mentally. • You pay for your child to develop strong friendships, some of which may last a lifetime. • You pay for the chance to be taught by fantastic coaches who will teach your child that Rugby is not just about the skills of the game but also
Leo Wiles , Eumundi
about the ups and downs of life. • You pay for your child to be disciplined, not just by the coaches but also by the match officials and the laws of the game as well. • You pay for your child to learn to take care of his/her body and to develop awareness that exercise is part of a healthy lifestyle. • You pay for your child to learn to work with others in a team situation and to respect others, even match officials and those with whom you are competing with. • You pay for your child to make achievable goals and work towards accomplishing them. Related to this is the ability to deal with disappointments and the strategies needed to pick one’s self back up and reset for the task ahead. • You pay for your child to be
made aware that champions are not created overnight. To be a future Red or Wallaby takes hours and hours, indeed years, of hard work and dedication. • You pay for your child to be made aware that not all future Wallabies or All Blacks made junior representative teams U12s to U18s. Wallaby great, John Eales did not even play for his school’s first XV! • You pay for your child to be outside running around and having a break from the screen. Don’t know about you but investing in your child’s future health and wellbeing sounds like pretty good value to me. Oh, I forgot to mention that Rugby gives your child the opportunity to look pretty cool with a mouthguard, footy boots and headgear. Just like the guys on TV!

Health FITNESS AND FUN FOR LOCAL KIDS
Brooke Conlon, Eumundi
This school holidays local children had the chance to join my four day kid’s boot camp program. The aim was teaching kids how to work as a team, motivate each other and have fun while moving their bodies and learning new skills. It featured lots of games, strength workouts, circuit training and workouts - all of which challenged the children’s balance and coordination, cardio fitness and overall strength. The kids loved working as a team and motivating others to keep pushing themselves. Kids that participated were aged five to 12 years and it was wonderful to see all the children - no matter their size, age or ability - just giving it a go! Popular workouts were the tyre flipping work out (where they shouted the house down encouraging their team mates) and warm up games which kept the sessions entertaining. Nine year- old Kobe Bowman from Doonan shared, “I loved the boot camp because it was fun and it challenged me to work
harder!” Kobe’s little brother, six year-old Taj said he loved the games. Others enjoyed the tyre flipping and the ‘positive spirit and energy’ that the kids brought to the sessions. Kids bootcamps are run in Eumundi by Brooke Conlan of B Active Personal Training & Group Fitness and occur during most school holidays. Look out for more holiday bootcamps leading up to the next school holidays or register your interest by contacting Brooke. Currently a kids ZUU Chimps program is being developed to run over a 6 week period. This program will be aimed at two age groups – 5-10 years and 11-16 years. bactiveforlife@gmail.com

Eat Ingredients 800g beef brisket 4 x red asian shallots (or 2 large onions) 1 x 5cm piece of ginger 4 x garlic cloves 1 - 2 chilli (to taste) 1 bunch coriander 1 tsp ground tumeric 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tblsp curry powder Olive oil 3 x med potatoes, chopped into your preferred size. 1 x 400g tin cocount milk 3/4 cup desiccated coconut 2 limes Basmati rice to serve Lime to serve
This is a fusion of a few recipes. It all happened when I was trying to find something to cook with beef brisket – a cheaper cut of beef. I found it easiest to use the slow cooker to cook the brisket until it’s soft enough to shred apart. You can do this ahead of time if you want. The rest is pretty quick and easy to throw together. It’s also really nice being able to use all those gorgeous limes that are just falling off my trees at the moment.
Add the coconut milk and half a tin of water plus some salt and pepper. Bring to the boil and then reduce to simmer for a further 15 minutes or until reduced slightly. While curry is simmering, gently toast desiccated coconut in a small fry pan. Whiz in the food processor and add to your sauce.
Method
Finally, adjust seasoning and chop remaining coriander.
Chop one onion roughly into wedges and place in the base of your slow cooker.
Lil Staff, Cooroy
Heat oil in fry pan or large saucepan. On a low heat cook the paste for about 15 minutes or until just golden. Keep stirring so it doesn’t stick. I add my potatoes in with the paste so that they can partially cook, otherwise you may need to parboil/steam them.
Natural yoghurt to serve Heat oil in frying pan. Season brisket and brown on both sides.
My Easy Beef Rendang
Peel a fresh onion, roughly chop and place in a food processor with the ginger, garlic, coriander stalks, chilli, tumeric, cinnamon and curry powder. Whiz into a paste.
Place browned brisket on top. Cook on low for 6-8 hours - or until tender and easy to shred. Shred while hot. Compost your onions - unless you have another use for them.
If you have excess, add some to the sauce and leave some for garnish. Add some lime zest and juice of 1 or 2 limes and stir through curry. As I serve the curry I give it another good squeeze of lime in each bowl (because we love lime!). Serve with cooked basmati rice, natural or greek yoghurt and extra lime wedges.

During a moult it is important to up the protein in the diet and ensure there is calcium available to peck at (e.g. fine shell grit). You can also purchase minerals that go into the water from pet shops and rural stores that are specifically for chickens.
Getting chooks back on the lay Sometimes our hens will stop laying for periods during the year. There are many factors that can affect laying and this can be out of our control. Sometimes we can help get them back on the lay. Purebred chickens will go through an annual moult.
It is natural for them to stop laying during this time as their bodies use a lot of nutrients and protein to regrow new feathers. However, many crossbred (hybrid) chickens, such as Isa browns, keep laying during this time. They can lay consistently

All welcome. Eumundi designer Brett Grimley from Ecolibrium Designs is holding a Sustainable Living Spaces talk at the Yandina Community Garden, 41 Farrell St, Sat 21 July, 9-11am. Learn about financial & environmental sustainability. yandinacommunitygardens.com.au Sunshine Coast Council’s tip shop has reopened under the new name Reviva, with local resident Lucy Yule managing. Not-for-profit RRA partners with local community groups to salvage and up-cycle goods that would otherwise go to landfill. It also provides education and training opportunities. 16
Ensuring a hens diet is 80% commercial chicken feed and 20% free ranging and scraps will improve laying ability. Feeding carbohydrate scraps - such as bread, pasta and potato - can stop chickens eating enough of their layer food and this can stop them laying. It can also cause them to lose weight and crave for carbs! They may become noisy. Sometimes you might think your hens aren’t laying but after carefully looking into it they actually are! Sometimes they have moved where they lay and are hiding the eggs. It is also common for crows or other
animals to eat the eggs and they remember where to find them and at what time every day. Why hens may stop laying • Moulting - losing feathers and growing new ones takes a lot of energy • Diet - if nutrients aren’t balanced it can affect laying as well as dehydration • Weather - very hot weather can cause stress and may stop hens laying • Length of days - daylight hours are very short in winter which can reduce or stop laying • Stress - can cause laying to stop e.g. new arrivals to flock, dogs, loud noises etc. • Illness - if a chicken becomes unwell or underweight they can stop laying

The Coolum to Cooloola continuous National Park Strategy has been in the planning for the past 25 years. Mayor Tony Wellington said the $3.5 million cost to purchase this timber forest lease from HQ plantations would see Noosa Parks Association, Noosa Council and Queensland’s Department of Environment and Science each contributing one third. The land investment between Tewantin, Cooroy, Pomona and Boreen Point will see the Tewantin National Park increase dramatically in size. Noosa Parks said this will double the size of the Park to over 5000 hectares, and physically join it with
HINTERLAND TRAIL
Cooloola National Park. Mayor Wellington said, “Over the next five years HQ plantations will take away the plantation wood, then Noosa will be moving in to rehabilitate with seed stock.” The Mayor shared that this was the first time a pine forest would be rehabilitated to natural land in Queensland. The new section of National Park will now be released in stages. Some will go straight to National Park and the whole parcel will be park within 10 years. There are also patches of remnant rainforest that has never been logged or felled Mayor Wellington said.
Tickets are now on sale for this year’s Great Noosa Trail Walk from 29 Sept to 30 Oct. The trail traverses the country towns of Cooroy, Kin Kin, Cooran and Pomona via a series of dedicated walking trails through farmlands, natural forests and spectacular lookouts of the hinterland through to the ocean. Walkers can take in the hinterland landscape, local cafes and antique shops on the route. A reasonable level of walking fitness is required, but this is not a race - plenty of time is
allowed to complete each day’s walk. Trail guides will be on the route providing assistance and information about the history and landscape. Camping accommodation is provided in camping grounds in Kin Kin and Cooran or at numerous guest houses. A shuttle bus transfers camping gear – plus weary walkers if need be. Places are limited to 150 walkers and sells out every year. greatnoosatrailwalk.com.au
Mayor Wellington said connective corridors are increasingly vital for biodiversity and the big winners would be the region’s flora and fauna – particularly Noosa’s koalas.

Letters SERIAL INTRUDERS IN DOONAN
KINDNESS OF HINTERLANDERS
At least three male intruders entered our Parkdale Ave property on 3 July at around 3.30am. My husband and I were on holidays when my 18 year-old daughter rang me crying in fear because she was hiding, waiting for the police to arrive, watching two guys standing outside the back door while a third man walked around our house. The dogs, security lights and the TV on in the house didn’t deter them. I’ve never felt so helpless to be so far away while my 18 year-old was frightened for her life - not knowing what these guys were going to do. Our back yard is not fully fenced and they were able to get away when police arrived, but before police got there she could hear them talking and our dogs were barking but they were fenced in a different area unable to access where the intruders were. My daughter could make out figures in the dark but not any facial features as the men had their backs to her. One had a baseball cap on backwards. If anyone saw or heard anything around 3.30am on 3 July please let local police know. This is the third time we have had intruders at our property - my daughter is very shaken up by the ordeal. We now live in fear every time we hear our dogs bark thinking they are coming back. These people need to be caught!
Words cannot describe our appreciation of the help and kindness people showed our family recently. We were towing our horse through Doonan with our kids in the car on our way to our trainer’s house when our car filled with smoke and caught fire on Sunrise Rd. Passers-by stopped without hesitation to help our kids and get our horse from the float. They even helped us roll our float away from the car. They kept everyone calm, direc ted traffic until the fire brigade got there. A gentleman stopped straight away who lived down the street and helped us in every way, staying with us to the end. I don’t know your name
but you were amazing. Thank you from the bottom of our heart. Guys from a passing removal truck closed the road and direc ted traffic. A huge thanks to the fire brigade, police, tow truck driver and all the people who stopped and offered to give us a hand. We are all safe. A special mention to Lara Krattinga for floating William home and helping us get to safety, Jess and Kerry for taking our family home, Sue for caring for my mum and little girl, and Angie who stayed with my distressed oldest daughter. You are all angels and our family cannot thank you all enough. Hourigan Family, Doonan xx
