Notes Editor’s note ...

The Green is colloquial, creative and genuine. It is a community service – and is a big reason why Eumundi and the hinterland has the ‘creative and green vibe’ that it does. You can break it down into three main areas: Community / Nature/ Creativity. The Green doesn’t print free advertorial, just real community content focusing entirely on the hinterland region and its people. The Green is unique – there’s nothing else like it! Most publications have to give in to advertorial pressures but the Green is different. It highlights the talents and assets of its unique community. We don’t cover an event in Caloundra or Brisbane. Because of the community constraints regarding content and advertising – coupled with being subsidised by ECCO – the Green can do what so many small publications fail to – survive. Since taking on the Green I’ve seen many local magazines and community papers fold. They can’t compete with the immediacy of online news and don’t have the resources to cover everything. So the Green’s focus has become more about longer features written by locals. Instead of trying to compete with the big media beasts we slow it down and allow readers to take their time with the Green rather than throw it away after half an hour. Independent magazine publishing is a dying art form... a dying craft. Yet people are still drawn to holding a magazine in their hands. But what was once a necessity to gain info has become a luxury when time is a precious commodity. Through the Green, with my small team and army of volunteers, we’re keeping this wonderful craft of community magazine publishing alive. Head to page 17 for more information about this community magazine and the reader survey we’ll be running in August.

The issue of proposed ‘pay’ parking in Maroochydore and Mooloolaba is certainly a topical one at the moment and it’s a proposed change that I don’t support. While Council has held community consultation sessions and included small sections on ‘Pay Parking’ within its Integrated Transport Strategy document, I feel people need to REALLY understand what paid parking potentially entails. Firstly, if multi-deck, ‘pay’ car parks were constructed at Mooloolaba and or Maroochydore, this would automatically mandate that all existing on-street parking within a ½ -3/4 kilometre radius would also become ‘pay’ parking. The Mooloolaba and Maroochydore CBDs would also have NO ‘free parking’. Avid proponents of ‘pay’ parking often espouse that the driving force behind the push is it’ll encourage more people to use public transport. My problem with this is that our current public transport setup on the Sunshine Coast is nowhere near good enough to replace the genuine need for people to travel by car to these regions. This is particularly the case for residents who need to commute from hinterland areas, where public transport is abysmal. The great advantages in

residing and holidaying on the Coast include the ease of getting around and the relaxed lifestyle without the expense of a big city. This sets our region apart. I certainly acknowledge the genuine need for additional car parking facilities at busy centres in order to cater for the current and future demands, and with high land prices I believe the utilisation of multideck parking facilities is the only realistic way Council can provide relatively cost-effective parking solutions. For all of those wondering where we’ll get the money to construct a multideck carpark The Mooloolaba Master plan for Landscaping and Foreshore Public Realm funding is in the order of 40 million dollars plus. This would fund 2 x 800 space car parks. Whilst I’m not advocating stopping the foreshore master planning, I am questioning why some expect revenue from the car parking, yet we don’t expect anything from our multi-million dollar landscaping project - and nor should we. On-street parking should remain ‘regulated’ or ‘timed’, as I believe this existing system encourages turnover of spaces, whilst also allowing people reasonable periods of free parking.

EU NOOSA RD REVIEW FUNDED Following months of lobbying and meetings with local residents, Member for Ninderry Dan Purdie has welcomed news of a $200,000 commitment to carry out a planning study and speed limit review for Eumundi Noosa Rd. Mr Purdie said he had held meetings with local residents and TMR to discuss a number of safety concerns with the road and recently relaunched a petition to call for an urgent safety review after meeting a group of residents onsite. “This is a great outcome for the local residents, and I thank them

for their support of the petition and our campaign to improve the safety of this busy arterial road.” “This is a positive step forward in our ongoing campaign to see this long overdue infrastructure upgrade project delivered for the community,” Mr Purdie said. Mr Purdie said he would continue lobbying to ensure that further safety upgrades identified in the planning study, which is expected to be completed next year, are funded.

Last Tuesday, trainer and assessor Richard put a group of his students to work at Eumundi’s School of Arts preparing and planting up the

It was the smiles on their faces at the end that made it all worth it. Even now, all these years on, I still make sure that I am there to listen and applaud the new class that has taken on the difficult instruments, just to see at the end their beaming faces. The Noosa Pengari Children’s Festival is a phenomenal day to share with the family or to meet other talented and beautiful people. There’s so many things to do, for everyone! I know this year I will be splurging on the homemade cakes from the families and creating my very own tie dye shirt. While my friends, especially the younger ones, are trying to convince me to run around and build all different kinds of things with the scrap wood, or help them scavenger hunt through the sand to get the biggest and prettiest

crystals before everyone else, I will be taking the time out of my day to relax, drink tea and listen to the wonderful and talented musicians before waiting for my name to be called out among the winners of the raffle. Maybe I’ll win a trip to the Gold Coast, or a skydiving ticket? Maybe you just want to meet up with friends. This is the place to be, drink tea and the entry is free; what’s there to lose? Can’t wait to see you all there.

It’s about supporting and encouraging each other to do our best. Netball is a great sport and I encourage many others to play.

The Noosa Netball Carnival in Tewantin began on a Sunday morning in a flurry of bright coloured uniforms, representing the different netball teams. The carnival has grown since it started four years ago from 48 teams to 70. Girls and boys came from as far as the Gold Coast, Hervey Bay and Fraser Island. This year Eumundi State School had three teams representing Eumundi. I am lucky enough to be in the grade 6 Eumundi Starlights team. Each player has their own responsibility, their own job. Living TEA PURVEYER PUTS DOWN ROOTS IN DOONAN With a background in Natural Health Science, a passion for herbal medicine and a slight obsession with tea, Doonan local Lee Sutherland has become quite the tea connoiseur. She now concocts her own wild grown, organic, herbal tea mixes at home and is a purveyor of tea with her Little Wildling Co. products that she sells online and at the pop-up shop Luxe Life in Eumundi. But Lee’s teas are not for your average nanna! With hand blended concoctions called I am Goddess, and I Need a Moment, her blends are mixed with the rule breakers and dreamers in mind! The Green met with Lee at her Hinterland home to find out why she’s so passionate about tea. Q: What is it about tea that you’ve made it your life’s passion? I studied Natural Health Science (herbal medicine and nutrition) pretty much straight out of high school so obviously that was a huge influence, but I think my passion started many years before that growing up in country WA. My primary school only had 50 kids in total and since we were in the middle of nowhere we often had aboriginal elders come in to show us all of the things growing in the bush and how to make “magic” potions! Once I finished school my older sister encouraged me to try the course as I was always interested in health and helping people so it just progressed from there! I did plenty of detours before I actually started Little Wildling Co though, including three years

working in Marketing and PR at Universal Music, then as a Talent Manager working with people in the entertainment and health industry. Somewhere along the way I felt the pull to go back to the health world so I studied at night after work to become a personal trainer, created my first business fitnessinthecity. com.au on the side, and from that I was lucky enough to work with brands and the media with that hat on. I’m not exactly sure how it happened, but I imaged up Little Wildling Co and what I wanted in the product and it just went from there!

Q: When did you start mixing your own brews? I first started to make medicinal teas when I was 19 years old in my first year of college - I think it was a hormone blend

I wanted to create a beautiful organic range that still felt luxe enough to want to display on your shelves and not hidden in the back of your cupboard. Something with health benefits, but tasted delicious to give you a little bit of health in every sip!

Living I was also super shocked to see that my favourite store blend had artificial flavour and preservatives in there. So I thought I’d use my knowledge and try to create a new platform that would speak to a wider range of people - not just the people who already knew the benefits of having a moment for a cup of tea in a busy day. So I use social media to give the brand a voice and make it more of a lifestyle extension to encourage people to chill, slow down, and have a cup of tea with health benefits in every sip! Q: You have a background in Natural Science - has that helped with concocting your blends? Absolutely! Anyone can create teas, but I think there’s a responsibility to have knowledge and respect of the herbs you’re using. I have a few easy drinking staples in the range like organic Peppermint or Jasmine Green tea, or even the “I Am Golden” turmeric latte, but then blends like “I Am A Goddess” has been formulated for skin and beauty and “I Need A Moment” is like Valium in a teapot - I definitely used my herbal medicine knowledge for those. Q: How are your teas different from other herbal blends? We are very environmentally conscious as a company and by 2019 everything will be 100% sustainable and bio-degradable. We’ve just released beautiful black glass jars with our floral design printed direct on the bottle so you can either get our pouches as refills or up-cycle and use the jars to store flour, nuts etc. We use alternatives to bubble wrap when sending out online orders and in September our gorgeous new tea bag range will be out. These tea bags are unlike any others out there (no plastic, glue or baddies in them) as they’re made from plant material (but still look oh so pretty!), I’m really proud of them. While I love the whole experience around making a cup of tea from our loose leaf range (yes we have tea strainers too!), I get that sometimes you get busy and just need to speed up the process - so it helps people to make a healthy choice and not have that second or third cup of coffee! Q: What is it about living in Doonan that made you relocate here from Sydney? I just fell in love instantly with the area - I’m not sure if it’s the open space, the trees, the kookaburras ... there is something very special about this place! We came here almost by accident when me, my hubby and two bubs decided to pack up and leave Sydney after 12 years. First we tried looking in Byron Bay, but it was a chance day trip to see our house in Doonan after never having visited the area before which sealed the deal! We have space for a veggie and herb garden, three crazy chickens ... now we can’t imagine leaving!

Considerations for livestock Fencing and Shade/Shelter

The thought of owning acreage and getting livestock is exciting and many of us have rushed into purchasing animals without being fully prepared. Here are some tips so you can be better prepared for their arrival. Legalities Your local Council and DAFF have regulations that determine if you are allowed livestock and how many livestock you can have on your property. Visit their websites or call them for more information. You are also required by law to have a Property Indentification Code (PIC) number which is obtained online. Water It is quite surprising how much water livestock can drink. Research each species on the internet and determine their average consumption in our summer heat. Cattle drink an enormous amount of water. If you are limited to only tank water this may help you reach a decision on how many livestock you wish to own.

Most animals are escape artists, especially goats. Put up the correct fencing for the type of animals you wish to own. Four strand fencing may be suitable for large cattle but it is not suitable for sheep, goats, pigs or small cattle. Electric fencing can work well and help to keep out foxes and wild dogs. Ensure each paddock has shade and also a shelter if you intend on having pigs, goats, alpacas or horses. Moving Livestock Consider how you will manage your livestock if they are not tame. They will need worming regularly and if you intend to move them into different paddocks then thought into how you will do this is important. Having a separate small fenced off yard within your paddocks can make this easier. animalfarmsunshinecoast.com

He explained that for many people the anxiety of going onto a jobsite for the first time can be overwhelming. “It might be they don’t believe they can do it, don’t know the tools, or terminology... by doing these onsite jobs they actually get to see how it works.”

Rosy explained that she had

found the program through a lot of searching and chose it over Tafe because it’s more personalised and more humbling. “Being taught by knowledgeable and passionate teachers has been awesome too - I’m going to be sad to leave,” she shared. Richard believes that horticulture makes a wonderful profession for people who might be struggling with more mainstream work because it gets them back to the earth. “They see things grow and it makes them feel part of the world - connected of the earth. “It gives them that confidence and happiness... It’s amazing to see them blossom,” he enthused. Richard also recently volunteered his time to build the new School of Arts stairs and entertainment decks at the front of the building. He took inspiration from the original double entrance staircase he’d seen in photographs and the heritage centre. The addition of the new garden beds finished the renovation. The course aims to provide long term support and continues to monitor graduates even after they find work. “We pace our training to each student and work with them closely, making sure they build their confidence,” Richard said.

22 year-old Rosy has been a student with the program for six months and said she’d loved it. “I found it a little bit harder at school, but now that I am learning again it’s a lot easier because I’m really passionate about nature.”

“New people join and leave constantly – the people who are leaving the course help those that are starting. Then, as they progress through and build their confidence, they take over the lead role – this gives them experience in a supervisory role too.”

“You have to adapt the whole time, as well as learn how to present for a job, be at work on time, they might need help with maths or learn how to read analogue time,” Richard said.

Amount of Land Research and talk to people that own livestock about how many animals you could successfully run during our dry seasons without having to purchase feed. In our winter months the grass doesn’t really grow and it can soon be bare dirt if too many animals are grazing on it. Rotating paddocks is a great way to reduce worm loads and let paddocks recover and regrow.

The students mostly find the course through The Salvation Army or support groups for the unemployed. Richard explained the program has had a 100% success rate. “Over the last two years we’ve had three intakes of students with 30 students in each group and they’ve all found work.

Letters Cont’d from pg 6 Trains can take you to a lot of places but for Bruce it was only the beginning of his journey to becoming a journalist. After eight years of working with Queensland Rail, Bruce decided that he didn’t want to do this forever. So, following a journalism degree, he began working at the ABC. Bruce said it is the best thing he has ever done as it has given him so many opportunities. Bruce’s job has taken him to Sydney Olympics, Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games and a variety of different sporting events. He also reported on the Sunshine Coast Lightning netball team in their very special first year that saw them win the championship. Bruce also has an interest in military history and has researched World War One, World War Two and the Vietnamese Long Tan battlefields. In 2013, he was the only Australian journalist selected for a scholarship with the University of Hawaii which took him to New York, Sendai in Japan and Chendu in China. During this time Bruce learnt about disasters in these locations and

interviewed affected people. Bruce has met with Australian rugby union players while flying in a Blackhawk helicopter, Prime Ministers and has even been in the State of Origin dressing rooms.

He loves doing live coverage on cyclones and flood disasters and said the most satisfaction he has had in his job is interviewing those affected by these events and helping them through telling their stories. Bruce’s first boss told him that when you enter a studio always assume that the microphone is on to avoid saying anything inappropriate. Luckily he has never sworn on air, but he has had a few embarrassing moments when he forgot to remember this Golden rule. Bruce also recalls being the first reporter at the Sydney Olympics to interview two swimmers after a significant gold medal swimming race, however, the recording failed. But fortunately for Bruce, they let him do it again! While Bruce has a great career being a journalist, his next dream job would be to become a battle field tour guide.
