The Green Hinterland community magazine has gone over the 300 mark!

We publish 24 issues a year – every fortnight – so that’s over 12 years of publication. Pretty impressive for a community mag that’s run on the smell of an oily rag and the good will of volunteers.

Thank you to everyone past and present who has contributed their time, stories, photos and custodianship to make such a feat possible. Thanks also to the Experience Eumundi (ECCO) funds that keep the presses running and the provide a partial livelihood to the magazine’s five dedicated part-timers.

It’s apt then at this milestone that we take stock of what the Green means to the community it champions and ensure that service is still wanted. So, it’s vital that those who appreciate having a community magazine speak up.

What’s our scene?

In recent years, a destination ‘identity’ has become more important as different regions seek a connection with visitors and their positive impressions.... the way the world perceives our place. And, also the way we perceive ourselves, what we stand for, who we are ... and, why folks might want to get to know us Eumundi-ites better!

Visitors are the ultimate reason Eumundi has a commercial viability – especially with our artisan markets drawing some 1.2million people each year. But Eumundi also needs a broader definition that reflects the true depth of experience and lifestyle amenity offered by our town and its hinterland surrounds.

Refining our identity and raison d’etre is important as we move to the next phase of Eumundi living with a healthy blend of markets, unique traders, cultural events, a brilliant school and other lifestyle qualities to make sure we stay at that special sweet spot for quality living.

To this end recently we held a full day workshop with 25 local community and business leaders facilitated by Customer Frame and funded by Visit Sunshine Coast to drill down to the five hot buttons that make Eumundi special. This is what we found...

Purpose: To connect - with origin, with others, with self.

Principles: Holistic + open-hearted, with a deep sense of community.

Personality: A depth of soul that surprises + captivates all who embrace it.

Proposition: More than a place – it’s a way of being.

Presentation: Relaxed, unique + earth-aware.

So, a pretty good starting point upon which to build an identity framework and create a strategic marketing plan. A plan that will dive much deeper into how we actually communicate these messages to our audience and what communication platforms are necessary to drive visitation - whilst engaging our community in ways that preserves our piece of paradise and builds strong economic foundations for greater employment opportunities and fantastic community amenities and cultural framework. In recent weeks, I’ve really had to bite my tongue over the sentence handed down to Mason Jet Lee’s killer. Sadly, I’ve seen this happen many times before. Last week, I penned a letter to the Editor voicing my frustrations. I’ll also be raising it again this week, while I am down in Parliament.

Like most Queenslanders, I was furious last week with the injustice of the inadequate sentence handed down to Mason Jet Lee’s killer - his step-father. I’ve spent most of my working life on the front line protecting the vulnerable in our community.

Unfortunately, I have continually witnessed the failure of our revolving door justice system, the result of a generation of ‘soft on crime’ Labor Governments in this State.

I’m not surprised that children in this state face a greater risk of being murdered, and their killers spend an average of only six years in jail.

It’s unfathomable, and this

type of injustice is one of the main reasons I stood for Parliament. I want to see more being done to protect vulnerable people in our society, particularly innocent children.

There needs to be harsher penalties for grubs who commit these crimes, not only to deter offences from being committed but when they are, ensure the punishment reflects the crime and meets community expectations.

It was former Prime Minister John Howard who championed the notion that a Government’s highest priority should be the security of its citizens, unfortunately once again we’ve witnessed the Palaszczuk Labor Government fail in this regard.

With so many of Australian farms suffering through the recent drought, John Davison from Davison’s Sawmill in North Arm recently organised some of the local generous hinterland farming families to band together and collect hay bales for farmers in need including; the Templeton Family, Tony Blatch, Col Seib, Eumundi Golf Club, John Flatt, Vic Flats, Chris O’Shea and Ladewig Family.

“Seeing the images on the television was very distressing and we wanted to help those families out,” Julie Templeton explained.

I’m determined to keep fighting for the vulnerable in our community and I’m proud to be part of the Deb Frecklington LNP team that will fight for harsher penalties to deter violent crimes, punish criminals who commit them and provide a safer community for us all.

Over 2000 hay bales were collected from the Eumundi area were then sent via semitrailers to the Tamworth region of NSW. Julie shared, “Being farmers ourselves we understand the trials of farming and how hard the drought can affect families.”

Community CAPSULE REVEALS HISTORICAL TREASURES There was a great community turnout at Eumundi State School (ESS) on Friday 14 September for the opening of the time capsule that was buried 25 years ago as part of the Centenary celebrations of the school.

Discover Eumundi Heritage & Visitor Centre manager Wendy Birrell said, “It was a fabulous morning of reminiscing for the many people who were able to attend the ceremony.”

A number of students and staff who had been at the original burial went along, including the 1993 School Captains Sacha Sanders and Jessica Howie, and two current teachers who were at the school back in 1993.

Community LEARNING A LOVE OF SEWING Darcy Robinson and Clio Kross - Year 6, ESS Ignite English Andi Vendy describes herself as a happy, hippy, hinterlandliving mumma. She’s a selfless, hardworking mother of two, who teaches single, Indian mothers how to sew. Andi has an established ethical clothing line, 108 dresses, in which she designs all the dresses right here on the Sunshine Coast, and then over in India the designs are transformed into gorgeous pieces of wearable art.

Inspiration for Andi’s designs includes designer Vivienne Westwood, the nature that surrounds her, and the homeless, single women in India. Andi commented, “I feel my job is special as I get to help people in India’’. This has also enabled these Indian ladies to earn a living wage to sew clothes, as usually people in India are only paid 2% of the ticket manufacturing price. Sustainable clothing is also something she has been inspired to do to help our planet. Andi stated, ‘’ I am inspired by nature and making more sustainable clothing choices to help sustain our beautiful planet.’’

Andi says she especially likes teaching young kids and teenagers, adding “It is very rewarding to teach young people to make their own clothes and to watch the creative joy they experience.”

Andi is an inspiring woman, who not only produces an ethical women’s clothing label, but also has positively changed the lives of a number of single Indian mothers.

Six years ago, Andi made the decision with her two daughters, now aged eleven and eight, to move from Melbourne to Eumundi for the lifestyle, weather and community. It is a decision “I have never regretted,’’ stated Andi. She now loves much of what the Eumundi community has to offer, including visiting the Wednesday and Saturday markets, Berkelow Books for design inspiration and Humdrum for a coffee.

My wife Kristin and I are musicians and singers with local Celtic band The Barleyshakes. Kristin’s Celtic lineage goes back as far as the 16th century in the Isle of Man, and I’m Irish through and through with a hint of Cornwall. You can’t deny your own blood roots. Irish music was like a flame to a moth for us. We just couldn’t keep away. I can stare at Celtic knot work for hours. The Irish pipes transport us to a very sacred and reflective place.

Most folk here have some sort of Irish/Scottish Celtic heritage – and even if they don’t they still seem to get the whole ‘Craic’ element. Celtic culture runs deep on the Sunshine Coast and having a Celtic festival is a great way to connect with it. Arts A R T I S T S U N I T E T O E X H I B I T TA L E N T The Tinbeerwah Art Group (TAG) held their annual art show recently with the 40 Hinterland artists exhibiting their work. Held annually since 2013 in memory of group founder Gwen Blair, organiser Jan Cook said the group were excited to show their creative endeavours to friends, family, Noosa MP Sandy Bolton and Noosa Councillor Ingrid Jackson. Many paintings were bought on the opening night, with sales continuing throughout the weekend to both locals and out of town visitors. “The weekend was a great success and raised $1100 for Katie Rose Cottage Hospice in Doonan,” Jan shared.

John Gabrielson, CEO of Katie Rose Cottage, spoke about the Hospice before declaring the Art Show officially open.

He thanked TAG for their ongoing support which has enabled the hospice to now have three rooms that are fully operational.

The TAG will also be displaying some of their paintings at the Noosa Civic Community Exhibition Space throughout October.

Coinciding with Mental Health Week, the Nature Nurtures exhibition now on display at

Wan’din’in arts space, explores the healing powers of artistic expression with nature as the inspiration for the works. A diverse compilation of artworks, including various visual and performing arts, are presented by artists who understand mental health issues from their own personal experience and who find comfort through immersion in creative expression and in nature.

Strawberries have been getting a bad wrap lately, but this easy slice will put the bounty of excess fruit to good use. You can also change the fruit in the recipe to whatever is in season. My family’s favourite combination is raspberry and peach... also be warned the version made with plums at Christmas is so good you may devour it in one sitting and hurt yourself – especially with a bit of crunchy, burnt caramelised sugar at the edges and a crusty, golden top. It’s okay to have the centre still quite moist too. I tend to double the recipe and make a big slab in an attempt to make it last a weekend. It’s a lovely dessert with ice cream, crème fraiche or custard, but also makes an especially good after-school, after the beach, top of the mountain picnic - afternoon tea.

Makes approx. 20 pieces Ingredients

Method

• 185 g (1 ½ cups) plain flour

1. Set oven to 180°C (350°F).

• 1 ½ tsp baking powder + ½ tsp extra

2. Grease an oven dish with butter.

• 125 g butter chilled & diced

3. Combine flour and baking powder in a large bowl, then rub in the butter with fingertips. Once it resembles bread crumbs stir in both sugars.

• 115 g (1/2 cup) soft brown sugar • 115 g (1/2 cup) castor sugar • A punnet of strawberries, tops removed and diced in half *or a can of peaches & 100 g of raspberries or blueberries (fresh or frozen) * or plums deseeded and halved • 2 tsp natural vanilla extract • 1 egg lightly beaten • 185 ml (3/4 cup) milk

4. Press half the mix onto the base of the dish (I use a bit over half because the base is so yummy) and press down evenly with fingertips to make it compact.

5. Lay fruit over the top. If adding raspberries or blueberries, sprinkle evenly onto the base.

6. To the remaining half of the mix add vanilla, extra baking powder, egg and milk. Stir 13

mix together to combine but some lumps are fine.

7. Pour the mix evenly over the fruit and bake for about an hour until set and golden on top. I like to bake until the edges are quite dark. It adds a burnt caramel flavour.

8. Cool in the tray, then cut into squares to serve warm straight away with custard or ice cream as dessert. Or serve cool as afternoon tea.

• If using fresh peaches or plums, score skin, then blanch in boiling water for 10-20 seconds. Refresh in icy cold water to stop them cooking. Use a paring knife to cut a slit in the top of the peach, tuck the knife under the skin and peel it off. Cut the fruit in half and remove pip.

Fraser island creeper Now before I talk about the Fraser Island Creeper, I’d just like to say that I’m not entirely sure that the vine in these pictures is definitely Tecomanthe hillii!

I’ve heard it on the Tecomanthe vine that this could very well be the North Queensland form or a Papua New Guinean species, which are both often mistaken for the Fraser Island Creeper.

The Fraser Island Creeper, Tecomanthe hillii, is a beautiful native rainforest vine that grows well here on the Sunshine Coast.

It has lovely large pink trumpet flowers that look like fairy sleeping bags! In spring this vine goes off with flowers forming in clusters all along the vine. When they fall, the area under the vine is covered in a blanket of pink, making it perfect for a pergola.

I also noticed that the native stingless bees were loving these flowers this time.

As the name suggests it does occur on Fraser Island in

rainforest, often near water, in sandy soils. It also occurs in a few very small populations on the Sunshine Coast, and in the Cooloola area in the Great Sandy National Park. Unfortunately, in the wild this species is listed as near threatened. Another form of this species occurs in Far North Queensland, Tecomanthe sp. or “Roaring Meg”. This one may well be very closely related to the PNG species, thus creating confusion when trying to identify your Fraser Island Creeper! If anybody reading this has any information about these species I’d love to hear from you! I really would love to have the true Tecomanthe hillii and see it flowering throughout Eumundi in years to come.

Help gather information about the vulnerable birds with large beaks and distinctive red tail feathers, such as where they feed and their numbers. They have a distinctive call and feed on Allocasuarina trees. Accurate records of these cockatoos help our understanding about how they live locally and move around the shire.

Hi to all you gardeners out there who are wanting to know what ever happened to the Eumundi Community Garden Group! We are still here but have been laying a bit low waiting for Council to give us an extension on our lease for the Garden grounds.

Well, a ten year extension has been granted, so now we have time to put in place the plans we had for the Garden. Firstly, we want to thank the guys from Sunshine Coast Tilt Trays, Steff Graef and Neil for his amazing free delivery of the

storage container last Friday to the Garden. Also Sally Ross has kindly donated a beautiful cumquat tree and a bay tree to the garden group.

Spring has sprung and we’re keen to get a few more interested gardeners to join us. We’ll be holding a working bee and a meeting for all interested on Sunday 30 September, 9am - 1pm, to fertilize and mulch up fruit trees and discuss the plans we have for the following months.
