Notes Editor’s note ... We’ve had rain! Finally! Not quite enough to fill a tank, but the hinterland hills are looking a little greener. Spring is our favourite time of year to get into the garden and revitalise the veggie patch. With reports that it’s going to be a hot, dry summer I plan on planting coriander and tomatoes while the growing is good! Kids are back at school this week and with holiday makers heading home, the village is our own again. It’s a lovely time of year to enjoy where we live. A HINTERLAND MOMENT Don’t you just love living in a wonderful community like Eumundi where eclectic groups of people gather for coffee, walk their dogs, wave and chatter to each other in the streets and in the parks, or even gather for a barbecue. Although there is a lot of discussion about people becoming isolated because they are losing touch with their communities, Eumundi is one of those unique places where community is a part of the town’s DNA. Aren’t we lucky. Jenny Brice, Eumundi.

Experience Eumundi - the ECCO story
In 2008 the operation of the market car parks came back to the community via an agreement between Council and the specifically established Eumundi Combined Community Organisation Limited (ECCO), established as a not for profit company with three member associations: Eumundi and District Community Association (EDCA), Eumundi Chamber of Commerce (ECC) and Eumundi Historical Association (EHA). Two members from each are nominated as directors for the ECCO Board each year. With revenues generated from the operation of the markets car park, ECCO’s three constitutional objectives are: * Projects that benefit Eumundi and its surrounding areas, including projects that enhance community spirit and enjoyment; community amenities and wellbeing and business and markets sustainability. * To promote and encourage tourism and business opportunities that enhance Eumundi and its surrounding areas. * To operate communal activities, including the markets car park, RV Stopover facility and the Green magazine for the benefit of Eumundi. In addition to the significant annual expenditure on projects and community amenities, Experience Eumundi also distributes some $60K each year to carpark volunteer associations - giving service to many parts of the Sunshine Coast! HELPFUL HINTS Think Transferable Skills
Did you know that Australia has over 40% of its workforce in insecure work? About 25% are casuals which has been about the same since 1990. The other 15% or so is due to an increase in gig economy work like Uber, independent contractors and labour hire companies etc. This is not going to change anytime soon. One useful way of thinking about maintaining viable employment, particularly in the world of insecure work, is to list the skills you have and identify if those skills are transferable to other occupations. You may surprise yourself just how many skills you have, or it may challenge you to think what other skills you need to gain. For example, you may be a bank teller, and with technology these jobs are on the decline. However, bank tellers have a lot of skills that are transferable to other occupations. Although everyone is different, the skills that could be transferable may be analytical, communication and computer skills. When you think of employment for yourself or your children think transferable skills. Jennybrice.com.au

Community T O P TA N K S U P N O W Sunshine Coast residents not connected to the town water supply are being advised to take steps now to ensure they have adequate supplies for the upcoming warmer months. With an exceptionally dry winter continuing into spring, apart from some much-needed rain in some parts of the region in the past week, council has started to field inquiries from residents concerned about the low levels of their water tanks. It’s a repeat of the situation just over 12 months ago when many Sunshine Coast residents not connected to the town supply experienced supply issues after reacting too late to their critical water situation. This led to lengthy delays for tank refills with commercial water carriers struggling to meet demand. Local Disaster Management Group chair Mayor Mark Jamieson said with forecasts of a drier than normal summer ahead, residents who relied on their own tanks for their water needs should be taking steps

now to guarantee they wouldn’t run into problems later in the year or into 2019. “It isn’t a wise idea to just think ‘I’m okay, the rain will come’ if your tank is already at a low level,” Mayor Jamieson said. “Last year, water prices spiked due to demand brought on by too many people leaving it too late to attend to their tanks,” he warned. Any person experiencing extreme hardship due to lack of water supply should make their situation known to friends, family, neighbours, relatives or assistance agencies for support.

Division 10
Dragons Rugby As the curtain comes down on the winter football codes, it’s always a great pleasure to be invited along to end-of-season events for clubs within my division. I must admit that the Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union Club’s awards presentation is one of my favourites to attend! I’m always blown away by the professionalism and care Dragons club officials have for their players. Every youngster from every team at this year’s event received an individual spoken tribute from their coach and you could see before your eyes just how proud and special this made each and every one of them feel! As a father of two girls whose lives have been greatly enriched by involvement in sport, I can’t overstate its value in children’s development. Good coaching and management is essential to creating the right environment in which kids can reap all the social, cultural, emotional and physical benefits of playing sport and the Eumundi Dragons are certainly doing it right! Lonergan Lane We’re currently looking at options to release a number of sites within Lonergan Ln to enable the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce to derive some income to support the town through business initiatives. While nothing is across the line as yet, council staff are investigating this in earnest
and in my view, it’s a proposal which has great merit. Pack-up parking I was recently approached by the Original Eumundi Markets coordinator to consider allowing stall operators to solely utilise the short-term car parking bays in front of the OEM office during market pack-up times. Whilst this may sound reasonable in theory, it’s my view and the view of council parking officers that trying to manage and regulate this in reality wouldn’t be feasible or practical. I am however looking into other options within the market precinct to create smoother pack-up periods for stall holders and I’m happy to hear from anyone who’d like to put forward suggestions. Flying Fox Council is currently investigating costs and construction methods for a flying fox to be installed from the Caplick Way underpass to the Dick Caplick Park playground. I think this would be another terrific tourist drawcard for Eumundi, particularly on nonmarket days! A big thankyou to Louise Formosa who came up with this great idea! Rockestra By popular demand, Rockestra will return on Saturday November 3 at the Eumundi School of Arts. BELLI HALL AGM REPORT Stephanie Abood, Belli Hall Secretary At our recent meeting, we elected our new Committee. Neville Long remains our President, Kevin Conlan is our new Vice President, Stephanie Abood takes over as Secretary and Peter Habermehl re-elected as Treasurer. Max Mortimer and Margaret Long have both retired from their positions. Our Hall was constructed in 1932 on land donated by Mr Sam Kelly, who was a local landowner and Chairman of the Maroochy Shire Council. The Hall has been used continuously by the community and today our small Band of Volunteer Members still manage and maintain the Hall for community use. We urge local members of the Belli community to come along to our meetings and meet your neighbours and give us a hand to keep
this Hall open and available for the Community’s use. Meeting dates can be found on the Belli Community Hall’s Facebook page or email our Secretary at bellihall@gmail.com. Our Association is now looking forward to the year ahead with more Old Time Dances planned for 2019. We are hoping to start our Learn to Dance classes again in October, so please let us know if you are interested. Our new website bellihall.com.au is nearly ready to go and more information will be available at this site.

Arts EXPLORE THE WORLD FROM EUMUNDI Noosa International Film Festival comes to Eumundi School of Arts Hall on Sunday 28 October for three screening sessions. The first session comprises eight short films themed around Stories We Tell – a diverse mix of storytelling celebrating diversity. One of the key shorts was written, directed and produced by local filmmaker Tasha Lawton and gives the audience an insight into the Eumundi School of Rock. Tasha said the film features some of our extremely talented local kids striving to earn the chance to be taught by the best local musicians. “Usually in a band, there are one or two stars [but] Eumundi School of Rock is different – everyone’s a star and integral to the performance,” Tasha shared. “It was a pleasure watching them grow through the process gaining confidence and working on their stage craft skills. The program gives kids who can’t afford lessons the opportunity to shine.” she said. The second session is dedicated to Planet Earth and features nine shorts. These incredible films explore different takes on our beautiful planet. Exquisite time release photography in Alive brings the Canadian Rockies to life, presenting their stunning diversity and spectacular northern lights, all set to hauntingly beautiful music. Iceland showcases this amazing country from the air, giving you
a sense of the fragile, majestic beauty of icebergs through to stunning lakes and waterfalls offset by a vivid green vista. Equally mesmerizing is Antarctica – The First Dance
which presents the first ever dance film actually shot in the coldest place on earth. But while these films might give you shivers down your spine for their chilling beauty, in Namibia you are transported to warmer climes as a filmmaker and photographer travel over 3,000km in seven days. During this week they take in breathtaking scenes of wild animals and the happiness of simple village living, through the thought-provoking beauty of sculptural dead trees in a dried out water hole, through to the more industrialised cities.

Tickets $19 plus booking fee for a standard session entry. Festival passes to attend multiple screenings are also available at discounted prices. niff.com.au.

Also screening is feature film, Living In The Future’s Past. It’s beautifully photographed and presented by Academy Award Winner Jeff Bridges, who presents an original take on who we are, where we came from and why we think and act the way we do, weaving evolution, ecology and what some are calling the end of nature into a thoroughly engrossing story.

The Sunshine Coast Natural Dyers Interest Group (SCNDIG) was founded by Jenai Hooke from Alchemist Inside, a woman whose passion for natural dyeing, and especially indigo, is always apparent when you meet her. The tell-tale blue tinge of the residue dye can often be seen on her nails and hands. This community group now has over 150 members from around the coast, holding monthly meetings where knowledge is shared and natural dyeing skills are developed. This year, the group are excited to bring the work of some of the talented members together in an exhibition entitled Botanical Colourings at Wand’din’in Art Space in Eumundi. Using a selection of local plants combined with exotic and favourite dyes from other regions and countries, the work showcases the creative possibilities. There are textiles, tapestries, garments, jewellery, unique
sculptured birds, cloaks that have been infused with healing plants, and also includes dyed paper. There are highlights from local fashion designer Lara Stone whose beautiful leaf printed garments have been photographed by Alieta Belle. PAT B A R K E R T E L L S O F B R U TA L S I L E N C E The final book choice for the Eumundi book club in its year of feminist reading is The Silence of the Girls, the latest book from Pat Barker, author of the Booker Prize winning Ghost Road. It’s the story of the Iliad as told from the perspective of the young Queen of Lyrnessus, Briseis, who’s taken as Achilles’s prize; a reward for mass murder. As Briseis said, “Great Achilles. Brilliant Achilles, shining Achilles, godlike Achilles…how the epithets pile up, we never called him any of those things; we called him the butcher.” This is a beautifully written but brutal tale, as much for the total unthinking annihilation of women, children and the weak as for their complete lack of voice in any of it, regardless of their positions before. There is no possibility of a resistance of any kind to encourage the reader. Women are shown as chattels without agency. Even the highest born have no value except as breeders, workers and tokens of power for the men who own them. They literally do not speak except when

spoken to, hence the title of the book. They can only mitigate their circumstances with secret support for each other and manipulation where possible. Briseis is the real hero of this story, but it is to Barker’s credit that Achilles emerges as more than just a monster. He follows a code of honour and is adored by his followers. His prowess as a warrior is clear, but he is also trapped, a product of his warrior society (toxic masculinity!) and his lineage - a mortal and a goddess - which traps him between worlds. There are moving scenes in which he cries like a child for his lost mother and the sea, and he is capable of kindness.
Judith Pattison, Doonan
Women and Power traces the origins of female silencing back to its earliest examples in Greek and Roman antiquity up to the present. By giving female characters such as Briseis the voice they’ve traditionally been denied, readers glean a different version of events - which is the purpose of feminist writing. It’s been a good year for it.
But in the end Briseis proves to be the stronger. Her courage, intelligence and awareness of the needs of others are what we know make viable civilisations possible. This book is part of the current re-examination of the role of women and men in our world. Several of the books we read this year connect to it: Mary Beard’s

What you mightn’t know is that Caleb Noble isn’t just a gun landscape gardener - the 22-year-old is also an Australian Ironman champ, ranked in the world’s top three for his age group (18 – 24). Having won the Port Macquarie Ironman event in May, Caleb qualified for the biggest stage there is in his sport: the 2018 Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawai’i.
thrashing limbs of his competitors, a 180km bike ride buffeted by energy sapping crosswinds and a marathon-length 42.2km run under a scorching sun - a course last year’s champion conquered in just over eight hours. “I train every day, seven days a week,” Caleb shared. “Roughly 20-25km swimming, 450-600km on the bike and 80-110km running per week.”
Grateful to the Eumundi community and his workplace for their support as he prepares for the gruelling race, Caleb is mindful of not letting himself be overawed. Even so, he isn’t going to Hawai’i’s big island just to make up the numbers. “(To win) first time at a World Championships would be unreal. I am going to leave nothing behind and enjoy every minute.”
Hamish Cameron, Eumundi No matter where he comes in the field, Caleb insists he’ll be back pruning and mulching at the Imperial the week after the event. If you see him while enjoying a tipple, make sure you give him a well-earned – but gentle – pat on the back. To follow Caleb live on his World Championship quest on October 13, go to ap.ironman.com
To ensure Caleb gets a crack at the iconic event, the Imperial Hotel has generously stepped in with sponsorship. “He’s so very humble about his standing as one of the top ironmen in Australia,” says Paul Thomas, the Imperial’s Manager. “The dedication he has to training – after a full day’s work tending to gardens – is truly impressive”. That dedication is sorely needed, considering Caleb faces an arduous 3.8km swim through the

Health C O M B AT M E N TA L I L L N E S S WITH LIFESTYLE With mental health issues now the most common reason for patient visits, Dr Sam Manger, President of the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine (ASLM) and GP at Ochre Medical Centre is advocating for a “lifestyle medicine” approach.
Dr Manger said his own experience as a GP mirrors the health system’s findings that show patient presentation for mental health issues has reached an all-time high. According to the latest Health of the Nation report released by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners this month, mental health is the most prominent concern facing Australian GPs for the second consecutive year, having surpassed respiratory problems. Doctors are now treating psychological issues, such as depression, mood disorders and anxiety, more than any other condition, with 50% of the 1500 frontline GPs surveyed expressing concern for the future. Dr Manger explained, “Psychological illness is very complex and can stem from a myriad of causes, such as early life trauma, domestic violence, bullying, and relationship breakdowns, and can’t be treated lightly,” he said. Dr Manger also runs a lifestyle metabolic clinic for mental health patients at the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service, where he – along with an experienced psychiatric team – are conducting research into the physical and psychological outcomes in those undergoing a lifestyle medicine approach on top of their usual care. He says there is a great opportunity to create evidence-based treatment programs that include lifestyle medicine interventions, which simultaneously improve
physical, psychological and social outcomes. “People with mental illness may be hesitant to present to GPs for help for a variety of reasons, such as feelings of shame, guilt, hopelessness, and embarrassment, or because of a misunderstanding of mental health conditions and the risk factors,” he said. “For people in these situations, it’s important that they familiarise themselves with lifestyle therapies that can improve their mental health, such as nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management and healthy relationships,” Dr Manger explained.
Four Benefits of a Lifestyle Approach 1. Lifestyle therapies work Healthy diets can help 1 in 3 people with depression. In major depression disorders, 32% of people with moderate to severe depression may get better on a healthy diet alone. In addition, exercise can be just as effective as psychological or pharmacological treatments, which is particularly true for conditions such as depression and anxiety. According to Dr Manger, sleep disorders, social isolation and a lack of vocation are also very common in people with severe mental illness and improving these areas can have profoundly positive effects. Cont’d on pg 14 13
{ T H E G R E E N 10 October 2018
Health Cont’d from pg 13 2. Nutrition Sleep and exercise benefit a patient’s physical health. The same lifestyle therapies – nutrition, exercise, healthy relationships, stress management and quality sleep – can result in reversal of coronary artery disease (CAD), reduction in cardiac arrests and stroke incidences, and significant reductions in glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) in people with diabetes. Intensive lifestyle treatments can also prevent cancer occurrence and slow progression in patients with dementia. 3. Improve life expectancy People with severe mental illness can have a reduction in life expectancy of around 15-20 years. This is largely because of
chronic physical disease, such as metabolic and cardiovascular disease, which lifestyle medicine is particularly effective at treating.

While the cause(s) for mental illnesses are multi-factorial and sometimes unknown, there are certain factors that can increase an individual’s risk of developing a mental health disorder, and these are not all too dissimilar from the modifiable risk factors that contribute to chronic diseases – lack of physical activity, poor eating habits, excessive tobacco or alcohol use, lack of social support, environmental factors, and socioeconomic factors, among others.

Securing more green space It’s been a great year for our Land Acquisition Program, with a record 9 properties, equating to 405 hectares of land, secured during the 2017/18 nancial year. These strange but beautiful looking poultry are commonly used on farms to control ticks and send out warning signals when there are predators around. I recently raised three guinea fowl from keets (chicks) and thought I would share my experience. I raised my keets in a glass brooder box with a heat lamp. I picked up each one several times a day so that they would be tame (hahaha!). Every time I opened the door they would get frantic and nearly jump out of the box. I had been warned not to let them escape as I would never get them back. At four weeks old they moved to a chicken coop with a door at one end so that I could easily replace their food and water each day. They stayed in the coop for the next three months so that they always come back to perch in the vicinity. The day arrived where I let them out. On the first day they started to explore their surrounds around their coop. That night was the big test where would they perch? At my place or next door! Luckily my plan had worked and they perched above their coop high up in a tree. Every morning

they come back to visit their brooder outside my front door and call me. They even knock on the door! After two weeks of free ranging they have not left my farm but have definitely extended their territory.
T ips • Place the brooder close to where you eventually want them to perch. They seem to have an amazing memory! • Ensure the coop is large enough to accommodate them for three months bearing in mind their full size. Make sure the access door will not enable them to fly out when you are doing their food and water. • The coop should be near the trees you want them to perch in once you release them. It should be away from your house and the neighbours. Guinea fowl will make loud noises when there is any predator or anything unfamiliar near them. • Hand raising them sounds like a good idea but they are not like chickens. They are very flighty and once released are very hard to catch. animalfarmsunshinecoast.com

CLASSIC FRUIT TREES Adam Woodhams, Lake Weyba Every year in summer and autumn some of the most popular fruits we see fresh are the ones that are typically grown in cooler climates – stone-fruits, such as peaches and plums, and that great joy of autumn, the apples. Typically, these deciduous trees are grown in cold and frosty regions as they need what are described by the professionals as ‘chill-hours’. Now this doesn’t mean time spent meditating with your fruit trees while your Sacred Earth faves playlist gently strums away. It’s all about the number of hours a tree is exposed to temperatures below 8 to 10˚C, as these hours are required to initiate flower and fruit set. Characteristically an apple or peach tree needs around 700 hours of these temperatures. Simple fact is that doesn’t happen around our sub-tropical hinterland region. This doesn’t mean however that you can’t grow these old favourites in our region as there are now fantastic varieties that are known as low-chill, sub-tropical or tropical varieties. But first off, why would you plant one of these deciduous fruiting trees, beyond the obvious reward of delicious, fresh fruits? When I give talks on sustainability I often use the stone-fruits as a prime example of a simple yet brilliant sustainable planting. This is something our grandparents knew, but to them it was just plain old common-sense. Here’s why.
an abundance of leaves for the compost, and then in winter they let the warming sun stream through when you want it the most. Add to that the fact that an established apple or stone-fruit requires virtually zero-maintenance and you have a seriously awesome, smart and sustainable choice for your garden.

getting to know the local landscape by using the plants that grow in the surrounds is such an engaging way to learn.
Many retailers now only carry fruit trees during what they deem as ‘the season’, which is generally spring. As a horticulturist this baffles me somewhat as there is no reason for them not to be stocked year-round. Nonetheless, seek-out plants that are clearly labelled as low-chill, subtropical or tropical and you’ll be on the right track. If you are having trouble locating them in a nursery then you’ll find there are some very good fruit tree growers online, such as Daleys, who will ship an enormous range of plants to our area.
This type of hands-on learning makes you aware of seasons, cycles and keeps your eye tuned to the natural surrounds, in case you find a new foraging location ready for the harvesting. The passion for creating items to be worn or for our homes that aren’t coloured with toxic chemicals also underpins the members desire to learn - by making these small changes to the way that we live, we can all help share the positive message of how we can make a difference and build community. facebook.com/botanicalcolourings
Some of the varieties to look out for in apples are Tropical Golden Dorset (yellow-gold fruit), ‘Tropic Sweet’ (red with yellow markings) and ‘Tropical Anna’ (red with patches of yellow). Do pay attention to the label with regards to pollination as some apples like company – another apple variety to assist with fruit production. This isn’t a necessity but can improve harvests quite dramatically - you’ll generally find the preferred partners listed on the label. Others to consider are a
newish peach variety called ‘Angel’. It’s an unusual ‘flat’ peach that only needs around 150 chill hours, easily doable in our region. And you’ll also find other peaches and nectarines sold without fancy names simply as ‘low-chill’ varieties. And if you think you don’t have space for one of these classic deciduous fruit trees think again! Many are now grafted onto dwarf root-stock meaning that instead of reaching 4 or 5m+ they may only be 2 to 3m in height with some varieties even suitable for large pots.
