Business CHAMBER REPORT Cindy Suters, Eumundi Chamber of Commerce It was a great turnout to Chamber’s recent breakfast function hosted on Friday 12 October. Industry and Development Manager of Visit Sunshine Coast (VSC) Andrew Fairbairn was guest speaker, providing members and guests with key updates on VSC marketing campaigns for Eumundi. Highlights even included Eumundi being promoted on TV advertising during the AFL Grand Final! Andrew and the VSC Team have been working closely with Louise Formosa, the Sub Regional Panel Member representing Eumundi, and Louise has confirmed she will continue in her role for the 2018/2019 year. Other updates included the results of a recent identity workshop held in Eumundi, with professional customer strategists meeting with key business and community stakeholders to create an identity framework for the township. The workshop was sponsored by VSC. Cindy Suters (ECC Vice President) said, “The way that our community, our way of life, our personality has been encapsulated by the document is inspiring and will help to shape marketing strategies for business members as well as tourism bodies in the region.” David Perez (ECC President) shared his experience and key points from the recent all day workshop he attended for place making in the region. David stated, “Place making is a way we can capture our identity in
the physical form and is a great tool to help us as a community decide on main street revitalisation projects.” With Cr Rogerson also in attendance to meet with members and discuss local matters, John Stone introduced himself and his business, Agri Business Finance, as the new ECC Treasurer, and Joyce Turnbull also informed guests about the Rotary container refund scheme commencing in November. A number of businesses showed enthusiasm and wanted more information to become actively involved. Other key points included updates on the progression of the new chamber website and Experience Eumundi news. It was the first time new Chamber members The Store, hosted a chamber breakfast and Louise Formosa (ECC Secretary) said the set up was amazing and food and coffee brilliant. “Hugh, John, Kate and the entire team did a fantastic job - we will definitely be coming back!” Louise shared. eumundichamber.biz

Airport expansion on track The Sunshine Coast Airport expansion project has reached another milestone, with the completion of sand dredging and pumping operations. Around 1.3 million m³ of sand will form the foundation of the runway, which is on track for completion by Christmas 2020. The new longer, wider runway will enable direct access to new markets in Asia, the Pacific and many other locations nationally.
Over 200 people from local market businesses and township trading celebrated the best in the biz at the annual Eumundi Square Business Awards. Event organiser Jenny Formosa was very happy with how the evening came together. “We had great weather, Joe’s Waterhole did a wonderful job keeping everyone hydrated, beautiful dinner catered for by Sala Thai, live music by Sharon Brooks and oh yes, how could we forget… Loui dancing with a drag queen! “Plus it was yet another beautiful and fantastic set up of Eumundi Square by the Eumundi Square team,” Jenny said. “I love organising the awards, as it’s a night where we can all celebrate our achievements and shine light on the award-winning businesses that really have stood out over the last year,” Jenny shared. The Formosa family, who own and run a number of the market businesses in town, believe it’s important to recognise the growth and success of micro businesses and small businesses in Eumundi. “It’s also a wonderful night where everyone can get together, relax, celebrate and reflect on what we’ve all achieved. The night also brings together businesses with EDCA and Eumundi Chamber for a fun, casual evening under the stars,” Jenny explained. Eumundi Chamber of Commerce (ECC) gave two awards again this year with Andrew Fairbairn from Visit Sunshine Coast, Sue Mikkelsen from Tourism Noosa and Kym Sheppard from NAB acting as judges. ECC Secretary Cindy Suters said, “Every finalist deserves recognition for their business achievements and contribution to what makes Eumundi special.”

Paid Work over 50 Jenny Brice, Eumundi Australians are putting retirement on the back burner. For some it is a financial imperative, for others it’s choice. Did you know that 20% intend to retire over 70, and 50% between 65 and 69? To ensure this age group gets what they want, they need to plan and know their greatest asset is experience. They are a group with many transferable skills. What are becoming popular options? Silverpreneurs: These are people over 50 starting their own businesses. You may not be aware that in Australia one third of entrepreneurs are over 55? They are starting successful businesses in a variety of fields, specifically service work and accommodation. Is this something worth considering? Restart: Are you wanting to get back into the workforce? Retirement may not be in your vocabulary. Did you know that the Government is providing a financial incentive of up to $10,000 (GST inclusive) to encourage businesses to hire and retain mature workers 50 years and over. Payments are made by employment services providers to businesses over six months. Employers can negotiate how often they receive the payments. Employers may also be able to receive a kickstart payment of up to 40 per cent of the total amount after four weeks of the job starting. Check out ‘Restart’ on the internet for details. Phased retirement: Are you wanting to reduce your work hours? Sometimes it is just a matter of asking. Flexible work arrangements are becoming more popular for all age groups. E U M U N D I R O TA RY B A N K I N G O N COMMUNITY SUPPORT Businesses, clubs and groups are being encouraged to follow the example of Eumundi Rotary to ensure proceeds of the Container Refund Scheme are kept local. Ninderry MP Dan Purdie said as part of the scheme people can exchange eligible empty containers for a 10c refund at authorised Container Refund Points, or at donation points set up by a local charity or group.
Photo: Alain Bouvier The month of November will again see men across the Coast grow a moustache to raise awareness about men’s health – particularly prostate and testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Movember was launched in Eumundi at the Imperial Hotel’s Outback Bar last Thursday night, with a group of around 45 men (and women) supporting the cause with the promise to procure a moustache throughout the month, raise funds, and talk to each other about their health. Local doctor Carloz Sanchez spoke to the group about his passion to prevent illness by having checkups and living well, not just curing it. Co-organiser Jack McKenzie explained the purpose of the event is not really about raising money, but more about the conversations Movember encourages between mates. “When we started this event in Eumundi a few years back, I was asked if I’d ever had my prostate checked? – I hadn’t! – but now I do every year when Movember rolls around,” he shared. Co-organiser Michael ‘Civa’ Ciavarelli is proud to be part of an inclusive community of men who aren’t afraid to talk testies – or anything else that might be on their mind. “If you’re struggling, tell a friend. Eumundi Rotary President Tania Broadbent said the Club has registered as a local donation point in conjunction with Envirobank, and are hoping the local community will donate their eligible containers rather than exchanging them for a refund. “By donating your eligible containers at our local donation points we keep the 10c refund per container, which means we can reinvest that money into local charities and projects,” Tania said. “This is a great initiative of Eumundi Rotary, who have an excellent track record in supporting the local community, and I strongly encourage anyone looking for a way to get involved to get in touch,” Dan said. “Eumundi has a very proud
legacy of showcasing its environmental leadership, and this is a great opportunity to ensure the community benefits from this ever-growing ecoconsciousness,” he said. Janet Millington, Eumundi A breathtaking sunset in Eumundi was shared by 120 guests at the Rotary Garden Party to raise awareness and funds for Rotary’s Papua New Guinea (PNG) humanitarian projects. The event was held at the beautiful home and garden of Anne and Anthony Everingham and raised $3,200 for PNG projects. Anne Everingham was also the artist who made and donated a raffle prize of a sterling silver necklace, with onyx and etched resin decoration. The sunset was glorious, the music very pleasant and the food delicious. Guests were invited to view the home full of art works made by talented family members, stroll through the garden, lounge on cool shaded verandas or sit with friends at elegantly set tables. Funds raised on the day will go towards providing more birthing kits for expectant mothers in PNG. This is proving to be a very positive initiative as it encourages women in remote villages to make contact with a midwife within reach, receive the kit and consequently be given a consultation and arrangement for an experienced woman to be with the mother when she delivers. This is reducing the shocking death toll of both mothers and babies in PNG. Just a small $6 kit can save one or two lives!
Eumundi Police 5442 8222 Also supporting the fact that small things can make huge differences in PNG, local inventor Stuart Mason demonstrated how his simple invention can provide life-saving sanitation in schools with no, or only one, tap. Stuart came up with the idea when travelling and working in countries with no running water and where children had to carry water for long distances, meaning they could not attend school. He also realised that dirty hands increased the instances of disease. His device reduces the need for a large volume of water, aiding more of the 900 million school children worldwide who have had limited access to water and therefore increased instances of disease. Guests lined up to demonstrate how just one litre of water can wash 50 pairs of sticky hands. Eumundi and other local Rotary branches are working together to roll out these ingenious devices in hundreds of schools in PNG. To see Stuart’s device in action visit facebook.com/spatap
Three males - 23 years-old from Cooroibah; 21 years-old from Pomona; and 19 years-old from Cootharaba - were arrested on 31 October near a stolen car at a Cooroy property that was linked to two separate break and enters and a fraud offence. Police were notified of a burglary offence with a Black VW Golf stolen from Crescent
Rd, Eumundi. Items stolen from the property, that was reportedly occupied at the time of the break-in, included vehicle keys and wallets containing cash and bank cards. This was the vehicle later located in Kimberley Crt, Cooroy. Some stolen property was also located on the patio at Lake Flat Rd, Cootharaba.
R E M E M B R A N C E D AY S E R V I C E This year is the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1 and in 1918 when word that the war had ceased reached Eumundi, like many other towns, church bells were rung to celebrate. At Eumundi’s Remembrance Day Service on Sunday 11 November, the church bell at Discover Eumundi will be rung 11 times to commemorate the anniversary. Meet at the McIntyre Memorial Tree (opposite the Eumundi Post Office) from 10.30am for a 10.45am start to the service. All who attend the short service are welcome to come across the road to the Eumundi School of Arts for a morning tea sponsored by the Eumundi Historical Association, which will be on the new Daphne Greer Landing at the front of the hall. The WW1 Roll of Honour will also being on display at on the wall to the right of the stage.

Community HALLOWEEN IN EUMUNDI Whether you’re for or against the American tradition of trickor-treating, there’s no denying the trend is growing here in Eumundi. Every year more parents are acquiescing and buying costumes and Halloween paraphernalia. This year saw Memorial Dr, Dick Caplick Park, The Imperial Hotel and the streets of the 110 Housing Estate inundated with ghouls and goblins keen for candy (aka lollies) and a scary encounter. The mood on the streets was jovial, with families stopping to catch up and admire costume efforts. The accessory of choice was a baby (or miniature) goat, with four spotted on the streets. The homes that go to the effort to dress their house and themselves and supply literally hundreds of children with a spectacle – or even just a lolly - is greatly appreciated by the local families. WHILE WE LIVE WE GROW
Marlie Conlan Year 4, ESS Ignite English I take my spotting position on my front deck. It allows me to look out over my small but nature-filled property and spot the many different types of wonders. I place my book that contains the secrets to identifying every Australian bird in its usual spot on the table. My spying glass enlarges the flying miracles of the sky. I watch a magnificent king parrot gliding to his family’s treetop home and fling my book open to note his appearance. He proudly puffs out his vibrant red chest and whistles to announce his glorious presence. My attention is drawn to another beautiful sound echoing through the trees. I ready my spying glass once again to spot the sound’s awe-inspiring creator. A big, black shape soars out from the trees accompanied by an ear-piercing cry. I do not need my trusty book to identify
this bird, for this is my favourite bird…the black cockatoo. I frequently spot this bird as it soars through the air like a black, feathered kite heading for the tall pine trees that are in my backyard.
I am so fortunate that my very own hinterland home provides me with my private birdwatching sanctuary filled with so many unique and diverse feathered species.

RUGBY SEASON WRAP UP As the year starts to come to an end, the Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union Club can look back on a fantastic year with the promise of an even better 2019. Since the end of matches, the members of the club have enjoyed their Presentation Lunch at the Imperial Hotel, hosted a Reptile Show and free BBQ at the Eumundi Showgrounds, and finally an unveiling of the club’s new honour board followed by a viewing of the 3rd Bledisloe Cup match in their clubrooms.

This would involve dedicated recycling (cans, bottles, cardboard, plastics, etc.) and improvements to how food waste especially after home game, camping or events would be dealt with to benefit the environment. Long term projects include improving ground lighting, tiered seating and field drainage. Christmas is fast approaching and once again Eumundi Rotary Club hopes to offer a barrow full of goodies as a raffle prize that will bring Christmas cheer to the lucky winner and their family.
The club is anticipating entering at least five teams - U6’s to U10’s - in the Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby Union Competition next year, with a possible sixth team should we be able to get an U13 Girls 7’s team up and running. This would mean a 25% to 40% increase in player numbers should all go according to plan. The level of community sponsorship was up by 25% - an increase that is greatly appreciated as it enables the club to continue one of the best family oriented junior sporting experiences for our children in the northern Sunshine Coast hinterland.

Spring time announces the arrival of the Koel, also known as the Cooeebird or Rainbird. The Koel either enchants or annoys with its incessant “cooee” or “ko-el” for hours at a time, day or night. Being of the cuckoo family, the Koel will lay its one egg in the nest of other birds, mainly larger honeyeaters, friarbirds, mudlarks (peewees), and orioles. The young Koel ejects its nest mates and is raised by its foster parents. Koels are migratory and will leave our area again around March. Music S AT U R D AY N I G H T L I V E For a small country town, Eumundi punches well above its weight when it comes to music. The village has always drawn incredible musicians here because locals are passionate music lovers – coupled with the fact that we have fantastic venues that can cater to all kinds of acts. Last Saturday was no exception with The Imperial Hotel booking Triple J fave Mojo Juju. It was risky to back booking the young, politically charged Mojo for Eumundi, but the risk paid off with the night pulling a great
crowd locally and from across the Coast. Also on offer last Saturday was the band extravaganza that is Rockestra. After months of rehearsing an impressive playlist that stretched through the 70’s and 80’s, the 12 piece supergroup with two drummers, three singers and a brass section, filled the Eumundi School of Arts Hall with cranking good music that pulled a crowd of over 200 people. When you walk through the twinkling village on a warm,
clear Saturday night and see crowds of happy people spilling out of our venues, hear great music wafting down the main street and see restaurants filled with laughing patrons, it’s hard not to love where we live.

MUSICAL DRIVE-IN The next screening of Eumundi Drive-in features classic musical Grease on Saturday 24 November and Sunday 25 November, at Eumundi Showgrounds, Black Stump Rd (off Memorial Dr) with gates open from 5.30pm. What Is Tantra?
Menopause came upon me like a cold bucket of water – early, before I was “ready”, before I even knew what was happening. At 38, I was “perimenopausal”, the period approaching menopause, and by 45 I was totally through it. Like many transitions in a woman’s journey, things happened to my body that left me surprised, confused, despondent and sexually feeling like I just wanted to be “put out to pasture”. At least one third of a woman’s life will be spent as a menopausal woman; for some it will be half her life. For those who sail through this transition, it is a time of celebrating their newfound freedom with no risk of pregnancy and increased joy of sex. Sadly, this is not the case for many women I speak to. For most who are clearly approaching, or in menopause, there is a groan at the word sex and an accompanied feeling of resignation that her
body is a lost cause. But what if having fulfilling intimacy is not dependent on libido? Is it possible to have pain free intercourse even when hormones have changed the inner workings of a woman? The answer does not lie in the over too fast, conventional sex. Nor need it lie in hormone replacement - if that is not a woman’s choice. It lies in engaging a whole different approach to sexuality.
There are so many misconceptions about Tantra. Tantric sex is a slow form of intercourse that increases intimacy and creates a mindbody connection which enables you to reach new heights of pleasure and tap into your sexual energy for creative use in other areas of your life. Tantra works for menopausal women as their bodies are naturally entering a more tantric - or slower - stage in life, which is focused on creative and spiritual energy. It helps women trust their perfectly functioning bodies and embrace the natural changes taking place. A lot of menopausal women also suffer from anxiety due to the

Kirstie Henning Last month your local Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade held their Annual General Meeting, with all officer and management positions were up for grabs. Our previous First Officer Duncan Sayers had to step aside due to work and study commitments, leaving us a very big hole to fill.
Humphrey, my calf, was pulled off his mother at a very young age (under two weeks). Unfortunately, being born a male on a dairy farm means there is a 97% chance Humphrey will be no use as he can’t make milk, and there is only the need for one bull per 30 head of cows. So what happens to Humphrey? Chances are he gets sent away to a manufacturing plant that makes dog food. This scenario is common practice in the dairy industry in Australia. Over the last five years I have rescued and hand raised around 12 dairy bull calves. If you have enough land and you think you would like to do this here are some tips: 1. Check with your Council and DAFF regulations about whether you can own cattle and how many you can own per hectare. 2. Adult cattle drink a lot of water so you need access to either town water, bore water, tank water or a dam.
3. The first four weeks of these little guys life is very fragile. Many nights I have sat up with an ill calf, trying to feed it electrolytes just so it will make it through to the next day. This means you need time on your hands day and night until they are eating well and are healthy. 4. It isn’t cheap raising a calf, but it is well worth it. A good quality milk formula for one calf, from a few weeks to around 3 months old, will cost around $120. You need a special calf milk feeding bottle, calf muesli and you may require treatment by a vet if they get an infection or the runs! 5. I castrate my bull calves at about one month old. They then become steers and are much more friendly and it is easier to find good homes for them once they are weaned off the bottle.

Treasurer, and Eumundi sparky Jeff Friendship coming on board as the new Chairperson. Eumundi Rural Fire is always looking for passionate locals who want to help out their community in emergency situations. Volunteering with the brigade is very rewarding for the individual and great for our village.

Outdoors FIRST AID GARDENING After a few weeks of crazy storms and wild weather, those of us fortunate enough to still have our gardens intact are seeing a burst of new life as the combination of plenty of rain and warmer weather accelerates growth and lush development of pretty much everything in the garden. This also means plenty of weeds popping up amongst the cultivated vegetation. This is where I tend to get really excited as a medical herbalist who sees these plants not just as another chore in the garden, but as an abundance of food and medicine.

Top or Blue Billy Goat Weed is used when we get bitten by ants and ticks by just crushing the leaves and flower, adding a bit of spit and rubbing it on the bite. There are so many valuable weeds growing in every garden that almost everyone will have something that can be used either as a food or medicine. We can also add to this repertoire by planting a few cultivated plants specifically for use in first aid situations. Comfrey is invaluable for sprains and strains and broken bones, not to mention a great fertilizer! Yarrow will stop bleeding from an open wound and has been used by soldiers in many wars to pack wounds and prevent haemorrhages. Calendula flowers can be dried and made into an ointment with antibacterial, antifungal and wound healing properties.
There are so many common garden weeds that can be used for everyday ailments with just a little know how and preparation. Those pesky farmers friends make a great tea for assisting with blood sugar regulation and as a potent antioxidant. I use them for premenstrual sugar cravings by adding a handful of leaves to a teapot and infusing them for 15 minutes then drinking 3-4 cups over a few days. The Gotu Kola that creeps in between the grass and ground cover is a memory and longevity tonic and assists in wound healing. A few leaves can be added to salads and in Asia it is popular as a cold drink. The Dandelion leaves are great for the kidneys and the roots beneficial for the liver and even the ‘false dandelion’ or Cat’s Ear roots can be used as an antifungal treatment. The Blue

THANK YOU EUMUNDI & COOROY Jan, John, Brian Porter and family Steph, Abbey and Zali would like to thank everyone for their expression of respect on the passing of our son, brother, brother in law and uncle, Doug Porter, on August 19, and for their attendance at the Memorial Celebration at Buderim Lawn Cemetery and Gardens on Friday Aug 31, and afterwards at the Maroochy RSL. In particular we would like to express our appreciation to Tania and John Broadbent of Eumundi Village Pharmacy, and also their staff, for their friendship and their support of Doug over many years. Doug always expressed great affec tion for those at his workplace, and generally too for the Eumundi people whom he met professionally and socially. Many shared his interests and became friends. In earlier years Doug received the same support from Robert Bosworth and the staff of The Cooroy Guardian Pharmacy, with whom he kept in contact, as well as the Noosa Junction Pharmacy where Doug worked when first returning home in 2001.
As a family we appreciate the support we also received from Eumundi and Cooroy through the respect shown at the Celebration. In particular we make mention of the staff and teachers of Noosa District High and Cooroy Primary. Doug’s schooling seems such a long time ago and their presence and kind thoughts touched us deeply. We all remember Doug over his 48 years as a lively guy with a uniquely ‘Doug’ sense of mischief and humour which he took with him into both his social and his professional life, even in the face of the considerable difficulties that living with Cystic Fibrosis presented. His many friends and associates will, like his family, miss him dearly. On his and our own behalf we thank you all and wish wellness and happiness for you and your families.
