Notes Editor’s note ...

Community magazines are a dying breed. What keeps the Green going is its volunteer contributors and the fact locals want it!

I rely on the time and community spirit of locals, (some pictured below), to share with readers their knowledge and passions.

There’s also a wonderful group of volunteers, many who have been with the Green since the beginning, who do the grunt work every issue delivering the community mag throughout the village and placing inserts into issues – so we can keep costs down.

But without a healthy readership, there’s no point. This remarkable community want real local content – not a sell or sensationalism – but to read about our community.

From myself and our little Green team, thank you so much for reading and for your support throughout the year. We’ll see you in the shiny new year mid January.

Have a great Christmas – remember to look up from the crazy and breathe in this beautiful place that we are lucky enough to live in.

Business CHAMBER REPORT Eumundi Chamber of Commerce (ECC) organised some great breakfast and evening functions this year, with guest speakers such as Andrew Fairbairn from Visit Sunshine Coast and Louise Terry from Tourism Noosa.

Thank you to The Store, The Fig Tree and the Imperial Hotel, for making these networking occasions a great experience.

A lot of work has gone into strengthening relationships with key tourism bodies for the purposes of gaining recognition for Eumundi as one of the major tourism drawcards of the region. The value to the business community in tourism not only provides direct benefits to retailers and accommodation venues but also trade services and other sectors of our local economy which is why tourism is a key focus at this time.

Working hand in hand with Experience Eumundi has also provided many benefits to members with the Eumundi Identity Workshop taking place at the Green Room, Imperial Hotel in August. The result provided businesses with a key

framework to generate content for marketing and promotion of their products and services.

I was recently appointed as a director of Tourism Noosa and I volunteer on the Visit Sunshine Coast subregional panel for Eumundi. Being on these boards allows me to contribute to the strategic direction of tourism within the region as well as providing Eumundi with a representative voice at a regional level.

The Eumundi Business Awards, hosted by one of our members, Eumundi Square was a wonderful success and with so many member businesses nominated for the Best ECC Business, it was a pleasure to see Eumundi Village Pharmacy take out this award and Eumundi Dental winning the emerging business award. Congratulations to all nominees and winners.

Community CHRISTMAS NIGHT MARKET There was plenty of sparkle at last Friday’s Night Markets. The threat of a cyclone kept most locals at home, but those who braved the rain enjoyed; Christmas lights, Santa visiting on his preferred mode of transport, an acrobatic show and plenty of tasty food. The real favourite for kids has become the colourful lights throughout the playground in Dick Caplick Park, which turns the park into a magical wonderland.

S O R K I D S H I T T H E S TA G E Eumundi’s School of Rock (SOR) celebrated another year of talented musicians teaching music to hinterland kids with their annual Christmas concert. The 20 children from grades three to eight performed to a crowd of around 200 family and friends.

Christmas is fast approaching and once again Eumundi Rotary Club hopes to offer a barrow full of goodies as a raffle prize that will bring Christmas cheer to the lucky winner and their family.

It has been a year of successes and ongoing development for Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled (RDA), North Arm. As a community-based organisation we are truly blessed to have so many wonderful volunteers from all walks of life offer their many and varied skills.

Our horses are the pivotal cog in all the work we do and it is just magic to see how they can transform each individuals' life with just a look. On so many days we have what we call “That Special Moment” when something extraordinary happens and lives are changed. It is when a non-verbal participant speaks a sentence for the first time, or when anxiety is

This year saw more growth at the Centre with the finalisation of the indoor arena watering system including the collection of rainwater into tanks, a new front awning was constructed which allows our wheelchair clients to unload and load safely undercover during wet weather and all the horse stalls have automatic waterers saving the volunteers time and energy in topping up buckets.

Our support base continues to grow too. The Eumundi community is a major supporter of RDA with The Goose Club at Joe's Waterhole, Eumundi

Showgrounds, Eumundi markets, ECCO and Eumundi Rotary, being just a few of our major sponsors.

2019 plans are in full swing already with many clients already indicating their intention to return. Our new volunteer recruitment days are set for February 5 - 8 from 9am - 12pm.

We are hoping for a good response from our community.

Community EUMUNDI CAROLS CONTINUES DESPITE RAIN Eumundi Carols went off without a hitch recently with hundreds of locals unperturbed by the odd shower and the threat of a downpour. Organiser, lead singer and Eumundi local Melissa Isles, put together a professional and entertaining evening. “This year was fantastic, it ran very smoothly, may have run a bit long, but it’s hard when you don’t have many rehearsals,” she shared.

Having now directed 10 Eumundi Christmas Carol events, Melissa confessed this one was to be her last. “It has been wonderful, and Christmas is my favourite time of the year, but it takes a lot of time to achieve such a great night,” she explained.

“My Family has been the biggest support to me through the years of creating the Eumundi Carols.

“Most of the time they were backstage making bubbles and snow, building props, costumes, helping set up and pack up... I feel now it is time to put back into my family,” Melissa said.

With so many performers working on the show, Melissa explained a lot of rehearsing goes on separately with each act given music to learn. “We occasionally come together to practice our vocals if we can manage to be available at the same time,” she said.

up to each individual performer to rehearse at home. The performers then come together for two rehearsals. “This is quite hard as most of the time we cannot get everyone together at the same time, as it’s a very busy time of year,” she said.

“So most of the time what you see on the night is our first appearance altogether so we do hope it all works - we cross our fingers a lot,” Melissa shared.

at no extra cost.

When asked why the Eumundi Carols are so special Melissa explained, “For me The Eumundi Carols is all about Community and having locals perform is extremely important to me.

“The children of this town are our future and I love to have them perform and hopefully they will have happy memories having performed at the Eumundi Carols,” Melissa shared.

“I would like to say thank you to the Community for supporting The Eumundi Carols through the years.

“You come with chairs, picnics rugs and umbrellas - prepared for anything - you have been marvellous,” Melissa enthused.

Community EDCA REPORT

The year for Eumundi & District Community Association (EDCA) started off with our Australia Day celebrations with lots of fun had by the community and our volunteers. Our stallholders have settled in well to the new terraces area on Wednesdays and the area looks fantastic.

EDCA was very happy to help Ayla Long attend the Theatre Residency week this year. The week intensive theatre camp is for students in grades nine to 12 from all over Australia.

Ayla’s comments at the end were, “I had the most amazing time there, training in physical theatre, as well as playwriting and voice control.

“Many of the people I met there I later saw at Uni auditions, and I know for sure that I will have gained innumerable contacts in the industry, including current

distinguished actors and directors who facilitated the week.”

What a wonderful gift this was.

The Scout Hall has become a very popular venue for fitness and sporting groups and for other smaller community and social groups in the area. We now have a 10-year lease on the scout hall which will greatly benefit our hall hirers and the community garden as we can now put forward plans for long term use. Yippee!

Our lobbying of Council for bus shelters at the Eumundi School bus stop looks like it’s finally worked as new shelters have been recently installed.

We look forward to another great year ahead and wish the community and our volunteers a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.

From the President’s report at the recent AGM a quote on behalf of the EHA Historical Association (EHA) management committee, “Our stewardship of this association is to ensure that not only do we meet our community obligation but that we continue as the caretakers of a heritage that endures for the next generation.”

To this end EHA has been focussing on major works at the Heritage Listed School of Arts hall which it is trustee of. This includes a major renovation and rebuild of the toilets, an attractive front deck and landscaping, upgrading of the internal and external lighting, renovation of the bar and internal painting will begin before the end of 2018.

Remembrance Day this year was the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1 and EHA again sponsored a wellattended community service which this year ended with a morning tea in the hall. EHA is a major sponsor of ANZAC Day

and the Eumundi Christmas Carols as well as the upcoming Australia Day Community Awards on Saturday 26 January.

As part of its commitment to the development of the arts in Eumundi the association oversees the calendar of exhibitions in Wan’din’in arts space at the EHA run Discover Eumundi and this year funded the commission of a number of large outdoor sculptures.

Three were native beehives sculpted from a fallen tree that were part of the local Tree Project (page 16), and one for the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended WW1.

EHA takes its role in the Eumundi Community very seriously and takes on responsibilities it feels are part of its reason for being in existence and thanks all those who worked with them and on their behalf this year. eumundihistoricalassn.org.

Community R O TA RY R E P O R T It was a big year for Eumundi Rotary Club. Our membership grew by 14 with 10 more people interested in joining us in our local, regional and international work. Our group continues to be cohesive and efficient, with all activities being successful both in getting help to those who need it, and in growing good working relationships and friendships within the club.

Our signature event, the Eumundi Rotary Long Lunch, has gone from strength to strength resulting in over $20,000 going to Katie Rose Cottage this year, thanks to the generosity of those who attended, and those businesses and individuals who made kind donations. Date claim 31st March for a fabulous Rock ‘n Roll themed event in 2019.

Locally we have supported other groups in providing community activities from Australia Day, ANZAC and Remembrance Day Ceremonies, The Noosa Trails Walk, Christmas Carols and St Vinnies Sleep Out. We continue to support Eumundi State School with funds for

Janet Millington, Eumundi special programs. Riding for the disabled received $1300 from our Melbourne Cup lunch.

Rotary has supported the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Men’s Mental Health while the Drought Appeal will receive all money collected from the Christmas Raffle. Finally, we brought together local ex-service personnel to a casual evening, cementing friendships and extending our network.

Internationally we brought together 120 people with ties to PNG at our Back to PNG Night.

The Garden Party, held on a beautiful local property, raised awareness and some funding for our water saving project which now has a significant $18,000 to buy and install simple but effective hand wash technology in regions suffering clean water shortages. Community K AT I E R O S E C O T TA G E H O S P I C E R E P O R T Carol Raye, Chairperson, Doonan Katie Rose Cottage Hospice in Doonan, lovingly cared for by our fabulous volunteer gardening team, our housekeeping team and our maintenance volunteers, commenced 24/7 operations in August this year. It is with a warm heart that I have witnessed the professional care and support that has been given to the guests and families of those who have been in residence in the past couple of months.

As I write this update, I advise our nursing team has cared for ten guests who have passed away at the Hospice. We sincerely thank our nursing team, our personal carers and our volunteer support team for the special way they care for, not just our guests, but importantly their families and friends. Specialist ‘end of life’ care should be available in our community when and where we need it which is why we offer this ‘free’ service to those in our community with a terminal illness.

Our op shops continue to be warmly received and generously supported by the community in Tewantin & Cooroy and in January this year we opened the new furniture op shop which also

offers a warehouse/sorting and storage facility in Noosaville.

Our newest op shop opened in August on Aerodrome Rd, Maroochydore.

BELLI HALL REPORT Belli Community Hall has had another successful year of hosting old time dances once a month, finishing with our popular New Year’s Eve dance.

Our community hall also held its annual Cancer Council fundraising event with valuable support from our wonderful locals. Belli Hall is run by a small, dedicated committee from the local Belli Park community, headed by President Neville Long.

Out-going Vice President Max is moving on and we are very sad to see him go. He has been a pillar of support to the hall for many years. A huge thank you also to our wonderful Margaret for the many, many years of

dedication and hard work as the secretary of the Belli Community Hall Association. She kept us all going - paperwork in order, the meetings under control, the dances organised, the letters answered - words are inadequate, she did such a fantastic job.

The hall has also opened its doors to weddings with original art deco architecture and rare crow’s ash dance floor being features of the hall. Meetings and dances are held monthly with dates on the hall’s website bellihall.com.au.

VERRIERDALE HALL REPORT Fay Wiggins, Verrierdale The Verrierdale Community Group have had another successful year with five Full Moon Dances, many wedding receptions and party bookings, also a play group is meeting weekly for next year, also weekly bookings for Zumba dance classes, and next year a music group will have a weekly booking too.

Community NEW SHELTERS FOR BUSY BUS STOP M E M O R I A L T R E E D A M A G E D In response to ongoing requests from local parents whose children catch one of the many buses to school along Caplick Way, Eumundi & District Community Assoc (EDCA) lobbied Council to have the shelter reinstated. The original wooden shelter was removed a couple of years ago when deemed unsafe. Last week the new double shelter was installed.

The old wooden shelter on Napier Rd is currently also being replaced. EDCA member Louise Formosa said, “The group approached Council after the community expressed concern for the kids standing out there in the sun and the rain!”

“We’ve also been trying to get shelters for the other end of town in front of the pool and opposite,” she said.

Sadly, one of Eumundi’s majestic Trees of Tribute recently lost a large limb. The McIntyre Memorial tree was inspected by Members of the Eumundi Historical Association management committee; Donata Page and Michael Carney, as well as Discover Eumundi Heritage & Visitor Centre manager Wendy Birrell, who are caretakers of the Memorial Dr trees. Wendy said they then contacted Sunshine Coast Council arborists who arrived very quickly to assess the damage. “I spoke to the tree

lopper who cut up the limb that fell and chipped and removed it and he said that Council were going to come and assess the damage,” Wendy explained.

There is currently no update regarding the health of the tree.

Celebrating our 90th year this year, Eumundi Branch has been a consistent donator of funds to the QCWA Rural Crisis Fund over the years and has supported the current Drought Appeal. The State President for 2017/18 Joy Coulson, a member of Eumundi Branch, worked tirelessly with a dedicated CWA team to distribute funds for stock feed and to struggling Qld families in the dry, which reached crisis point this year. We are all very pleased to have Joy return to Branch activities next year after her very successful term “at the top.”

We began evening meetings in April. These meetings aimed to provide a contact point where women can share ideas, concerns and resources. Next year we will base our Busy Chicks meetings on the Country Kitchens initiative which was created by QCWA and given large support from the State Government.

Each month we will demonstrate a recipe from the Country Kitchens Cook Book, discuss one of the five areas to address for good health and learn from participants their concerns and needs to increase the health and wellbeing of their family.

We will share samples of other recipes

with a cuppa, develop weekly menu plans and share ideas for school and holiday lunches. If your New Year’s resolution is for improved health we will provide gentle, cost effective support beginning on the 4th Tuesday in February.

Last year we put effort into the well-loved building and making it more accessible to community groups. Next year, with our new and returning members, the Branch hopes to expand its activities and connection with its community.

QCWA members wish to take this opportunity to thank the Original Eumundi Markets for their continued support and to the Eumundi Historic Association for their continuing assistance in matters that benefit our iconic hall.

Arts L O C A L S S H O W C A S E D AT C H R I S T M A S P O T T E RY M A R K E T Over the last couple of years, the ceramic studio behind the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre, has established itself as the place in the hinterland where potters and artists can congregate and learn ceramic skills.

Teacher and facilitator Julie Wall organised for many of the hinterland potters, who base themselves at the studio, to showcase their work at the

inaugural Christmas Pottery Market last Saturday. Eumundi’s ceramic artists Julie Field with her equine pieces and Billie Sivek with her earthy tableware, were both selling their artworks. Instagram favourite Madeline King proved very popular with her Earth Darlings hand built, colourful treasures too. The

turnout of people was in the hundreds, all looking for special, locally handmade presents.

The Eumundi Schools of Arts is a gorgeous old building, which sadly hasn’t seen much action in the last few years. This is all about to change, as Little Seed Theatre Company stages its first show for 2019 at the grand old dame.

Working on this show has already proved to be an exciting new challenge, as the cast features an animalistic assortment of quirky characters.

Rehearsals have been spent inspiring the cast to commit to the absurdity of playing animals.

The Fantastic Mr Fox, based on the much-loved story by Roald Dahl, promises to be an outing for the whole family. Comprising a cast of young actors from across the coast, the show stars Eumundi local Oscar Long as Mr Fox himself. Rehearsals have kicked off, with the cast diligently learning their lines for the January performance.

Our fabulous wardrobe mistress Leona Seib, also a Eumundi resident, is once again creating the incredible costumes which brings the story to life.

Little Seed is known as a platform that encourages young people to explore their passion for all aspects of the performing arts – a fact I can attest to. Being a student there for six years, I have been offered innumerable opportunities to grow as a performer. And I’m excited to be Assistant Director for this show which allows me to work alongside my longtime mentor and friend Johanna Wallace, as well as my brother, Oscar.

Little Seed’s team of young creatives are also responsible for building the sets and props for the show – a job which takes hours of elbow grease, but one which we have eagerly taken on board. And Eumundi local Nathaniel Knight will be showcasing his lighting skills.

A wildly extravagant affair, The Fantastic Mr Fox is not to be missed. With a talented cast ranging from nine to 17 year olds – some who are seasoned performers, others stepping onto the stage for the first time – it is a tribute to the Little Seed team that they can bring together such polished productions.

Arts TREE PLACE FINAL EXHIBITION

Hundreds of people gathered at the Noosa Regional Gallery to celebrate and honour the inspiration from an ancient tree that fell on the Noosa Eumundi Rd. Part of the trunk of this tree was saved and has gone back into the community.

This Tree Place exhibition is the finale of three and a half years of workshops, collaborations, installations and community exhibitions. The universal reach of our connection to trees and the healing and knowledge that this brings, is far reaching and accessible to all, no matter what your background, age, or beliefs.

26 artists, some from the hinterland, or across Queensland, share their tree inspired stories in this collaborative exhibition.

A huge variety of different artwork are on show, each one as uniquely different as is each of our identites and connection to place. For some this is the story of the cultural significance of the iconic Bunya tree, for others it is the photographic story of forest bathing, textiles, divination, bones from country, poetry,

wood fired ceramics, installations and for the wood artisans it is the wood that has spoken to them.

The local artists; Amanda Cole, Gus McDiarmid, Anika Annels, Anne Harris, Jeff Fraser, Melissa Stannard, Noosa Pengari Steiner School, Ross Annels, Scott P Jones, Shane Christensen, Lyndon Davis, Jandamarra Cadd and Tamsin Kerr, all attended the opening. Guest speaker Jandamarra Cadd shared wisdom of connection, and Lyndon Davis shared the stories of Gubbi Gubbi as he welcomed the crowd to country.

The legacy that this tree leaves our community with, is three native bee hives at various locations around Eumundi and Doonan, and the seeds that have been planted.

As we approach Christmas we remember the seed of tolerance for all cultures and views, non-judgement and open mindedness. And the seed of resilience and courage that holds the traditional cultural and first nations people, nurturing, growing and sharing its seeds keeping knowledge alive. We also honour the Bunya tree as we enter into the Bunya harvest a time when traditionally people gathered and shared food, sorted business and honoured mother earth.

While all of these drowning deaths are preventable, it is the 50% that occur in home swimming pools where your immediate action can make a difference. Home pool fencing and effective supervision can reduce drowning deaths.

Royal Life Saving has developed a home pool safety checklist that allows pool owners to conduct a self-assessment of the home pool and its surrounds to ensure it is safe and minimises the risk of young children drowning. If unsure, pool owners should also consider getting a professional assessment of their pool’s compliance.

Rethink wrapping Avoid single-use, plastic-coated wrapping paper. Instead, choose paper without a plastic backing (it’s often thicker and looks more like craft paper). Keep and reuse wrapping paper where possible.

Tie gifts with twine or ribbons that can be reused, rather than covering them with sticky tape or using foil bows that often come wrapped in singleuse plastic packaging. Wrap gifts in reusable fabric, or in a Boomerang bag, and tie them with ribbons.

Make gift sets Avoid giving gifts encased in single-use plastic packaging and try making your own. Buy small things then package them up together in reusable wrapping - which becomes part of the gift. Books, socks, soaps and gourmet food, can all be made into gift sets and packaged in a canvas bag, Boomerang bag, cotton or silk scarf, or wicker basket.

Avoid single-use tableware Plastic plates and cutlery are very convenient for picnics and parties, (obviously out for a plastic-free Christmas), but even paper plates and napkins come wrapped in single-use plastic.

To eliminate plastic wrapping from your table setting entirely, choose reusable cotton or linen napkins that can be washed afterwards, and borrow, rent or hit the Op shops for any extra cutlery and glassware needed for festivities.

Upgrade crackers Many Christmas crackers have a throw-away plastic toy inside that gets discarded as soon

as the meal is over. A more sustainable cracker is a home-made one. You can source empty cracker sets or templates online.

You could also break with tradition (shock horror) and replace them entirely with a small tabletop present and homemade paper crowns.

Get the kids to pick and write out daggy jokes to roll up and tie with string or ribbon. You can put one on every table setting – or have a joke lucky dip!

Choose natural tinsel and trees Instead of draping tinsel or plastic berries across your mantelpiece, try to source the ‘real thing’ this year. Most garden nurseries sell fresh ivy or mistletoe. Or go Australiana and choose a banksia, or some branches. There’s a myriad of ideas on Pinterest.

Plastic free decorations If you already have plastic Christmas tree decorations, then keep them and use them – but don’t buy any new ones. Some beautiful alternatives to plastic are; antique glass baubles, rustic metal stars, enamelledtin ornaments, felt decorations, carved wooden decorations, strings of wooden beads, carved or stamped clay decorations, edible decorations (hung on Christmas Eve).

Make paper decorations Making paper decorations and paper chains is a fun, affordable and inherently eco-friendly way to avoid buying plastic decorations and a nice way to involve the kids (see page 20).

There are lots of online tutorials

and you just need; tissue paper, glue, a pair of scissors and a little (a lot of) patience. But if making them yourself doesn’t appeal, you can buy pre-made paper decorations that will fold down flat after Christmas for reuse the following year.

Make a wreath Invite friends and family over, get some champagne or mulled wine on the go, put some Christmas music on, and turn wreath-making into part of the festivities. Use scented materials like pine needles, cinnamon sticks and dried orange slices to make your wreath smell as good as it looks. Again, there are plenty of tutorials online if you need inspiration.

Ban plastic when prepping food When preparing food ahead of time or to take to another house, store meals in glass or enamel containers. To keep food fresh, use beeswax wraps (sold at the markets and shops along Memorial Dr) rather than plastic wrap.

Over summer you’ll find Boomerang Bags Eumundi in most shops along Memorial Dr and some discerning Eumundi market stalls. If you can’t see them – ask! They’re sometimes kept under the counter.

With January just around the corner, many of us find it difficult to believe that the Coolum Fires occurred almost two years ago in January 2017.

fires experienced repeated thumbs up, and horn blasts from oncoming traffic. Crews moving around Bundaberg were also constantly thanked on the street.

Following those fires many local Brigades organised community Prepare Act Survive presentations, at which local residents were encouraged to go home and discuss their family’s Bushfire Survival Plan.

It’s a message worth repeating here. Make a plan in advance, so that everybody in the household understands what to do when fires threaten.

One Bundaberg volunteer when asked, “what can we do to thank you guys?” gave a great response. She answered, “Work with us, go home and plan in advance how to keep your family safe.”

In recent months local Brigades have been deployed to fires as far west as Kingaroy, and as far north as the Deepwater fires between Agnes Waters and Bundaberg. Crews returning in convoy from the Agnes Waters

During those recent fires, everybody would have seen and heard the Watch & Act, and Emergency warnings being broadcast. It is important to always listen for the warning’s location. END OF YEAR REPORT – EUMUNDI FIRE BRIGADE As we approach the end of 2018, we are very much ready for a break. Although our patch has been spared any big fires this year, most of you are aware Central Queensland has had some unprecedented weather and fire conditions and some members from Eumundi were sent to lend a hand.

Throughout the year we have also sent strike teams to; Cairns, Atherton Tablelands, Kingaroy and Woolooga.

2018 has seen a changing of the guard in Eumundi. We have had a few members retire or move on this year - John Kennedy has been with the brigade for over 15 years and has decided to hang up his fire boots from active duty. Thank you, John.

With movements in and out of the Brigade we are always on the lookout for new members and people who would like to help the community. We hold regular meetings and training at the Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade on Napier Rd. You can’t miss it. It’s the one with the graffiti art of Brigade volunteer Jess Sayers on the side.

Duncan Sayers has stepped down from the position of First Officer. Duncan helped drive the Eumundi brigade into a position of envy from our other brigades because we’re now very active and have a great response rate when called to help. Duncan is still an

Anya Morgan, Eumundi Wow! What a year behind the scenes! With approval from Council to build the community gardens around the Scout Hall, we then had to wait for Council to grant EDCA a new lease, and it’s for 10 years, so we are very happy!! The fruit orchard had settled in now, our composting bays are working well, our storage unit is nearly full already and we’ve only just started! We have also been working on ways for the community gardens to generate their own income and there is no better way than by earning funds doing what we love so we submitted a tender to ECCO to maintain the gardens and landscaping for the new terraces and with many thanks to ECCO,

I have recently taken on the role of First Officer at the Verrierdale Fire Brigade and it’s been quite a challenging experience, but the brigade is hopefully starting to show the benefits of a fresh approach. We have also had quite a few of our reliable volunteers retire over the past year with membership dropping to 12 so we are now looking for the new generation of local firefighters.

We have attended only a few wildfires so far this year and that is down to the community being aware and not being complacent with regard to burning off on their property. My thanks to those that took the small amount of time it takes to organise a fire permit with us.

The Verrierdale area has been spared from large wildfires for a while now and we need to be aware of the large fuel loads

starting to appear in the area.

The Brigade is more than happy to come and have a look at ways to mitigate risks to property.

Verrierdale trains every fourth Saturday of the month from 2pm and is always looking for new members. We are all volunteers, and we all have busy lives, so the more people we have in the Brigade the easier it is for us all to support our community. So, if you think you might like to help out come down and have a look.

BELLI BRIGADE REPORT Belli Park Rural Fire Brigade is on the look out for new recruits in 2019. With new people coming and going from Belli, we want to make sure that the new residents know we do have a local community organisation that they can join and meet some of their neighbours. Additionally, once you join and you wish to be a firefighter, we’ll give you a couple of months of basic training before sending you out on the fireground, we call it FMS, which stands for Firefighter Minimum Skills. A range of skills for example, fire safety and bushfire behaviour, first aid, how to operate the equipment - this

Currently, we have 10 active recruits, ranging in age from 16 to 70+. Age is not a barrier, however, sometimes the work can be physical. You don’t need to be super-fit, just able to drag hoses around. Most of our recruits work outside the Belli area, so Monday to Friday we can sometimes struggle to get a crew together.

Outdoors VERRIERDALE TRAIL NETWORK B E G I N S Alex Watson, Verrierdale Residents of Verrierdale are set to benefit from recreational trails for walking, mountain biking and horse riding. The first stage of a Verrierdale Trail Network (VTN) got underway this week on private property at the southern end of Doonan Bridge Rd. The trail network is the result of years of planning by the Yandina Creek Progress Assoc. (YCPA) to create a local trail network for non-motorised recreation. Thanks to support from the Australian Government under the Stronger Communities Program, the YCPA has received funding for the creation of the trail network. Verrierdale residents will be able to get safe, off-road access to lovely bushland trails to enjoy nature in environmentally responsible activities – walking, running,

mountain biking and horse riding.

Stage 1, the Doonan Bridge Rd Trail, is the first part of what we hope will eventually be a trail network extending up the length of Doonan Bridge Rd and including sections in the Doonan Creek Environmental Reserve, then along the verge of Doonan Bridge Rd North.

There is already an informal link to the Doonan Bridge Rd section to trails south and west along Zgrajewski Rd. The first stage of the VTN at the southern end of Doonan Bridge Rd will allow parking spaces for cars and horse floats, grading of the trail including wet weather enhancements and drainage and signage.

HINTERLAND WEEKEND: HORSE RIDING Isabella Hogg, Year 4, ESS Ignite English We race the wind with incredible speed and courage. My legs clench tight as we build up speed dodging thick tree trunks as we go. I hold back to a canter as a fence comes up before us.

I stroke her glistening mane as she flies over the fence like it was no challenge. Now in a field of luscious green grass, urging her on she locks her neck, nothing can stop her now. Endless possibilities arise as we fly over fallen branches and trees.

I slow my trustworthy horse Gidget down to a walk and relax in the green, healthy nature.

Flowers are blooming all around and the trees are covered in beautiful dark green leaves.

A refreshing breeze blows in my face as I begin a slow trot.
