With the promise of Cyclone Oma looming last fortnight, many hinterlanders battened down the hatches. We checked our generators, bought fuel, charged lamps, stocked the pantry with canned food (brewed beer), for the impending storm.... that never came.

What we did get, however, was huge waves that ripped into the beaches. Every Sunshine Coaster who owns a board headed to Noosa Heads with the promise of awesome swell. But the breaks were so packed with literally thousands of excited, giddy surfers, you were lucky to catch something - fun to watch though.

Written in rhyming couplets and laced with black humour, Max and Moritz (A Story of Seven Boyish Pranks) is a common children’s story which has become a cultural reference in German speaking countries.

The mischievous duo of Max and Moritz wreak havoc in the small village where they live, terrorising local residents.

A side hustle is a trendy, relatively new term, that refers to a job you can work, in addition to your more permanent job. To have a “side hustle” is becoming a part of the modern era of work.

For some it is considered a badge of honour and for others an onerous necessity.

Types of side hustles are working for Uber, owning an Air B&B, doing on line surveys for money, creating your own business on eBay or even renting out your car. If you want to get ideas for creating a side hustle check out Mr Google or perhaps the Eumundi Markets.

I was first introduced to the term by one of my client’s personal assistants who shared with me her latest side hustle. It was receiving commissions for joining women up to local sporting clubs.

A woman in her fifties, she had become recently divorced and although she had a permanent job, she was motivated to future proof her income, as she was acutely aware jobs are no longer guaranteed.

I asked her if her employer was worried at all that she was doing other jobs and she said, quite the contrary. Her boss defined her as innovative and sensible to keep her options open.

The internet and cloud technologies have created platforms that can enable more people to take advantages of side hustles.

For some it is added income, but for 10% of Australia’s workforce which is about 1.25 million Australians - they are underemployed and needing to create more opportunities and side hustles just to make ends meet. I expect there are at least two sides to every hustle.

Thanks for the emails from around the community relating to my first report as the Officer in Charge at Eumundi Police Station.

February has seen four drink drivers, three Drug Drivers and five persons caught for unlicensed/disqualified driving.

All drink drivers are concerning but none more than a female from Gympie taking the wrong turn off the highway into our community and returning a result of .313%. She was looking for the Nambour Hospital to collect a family

Police have executed a series of search warrants around the area which includes the prosecution of numerous persons on Browns Creek Rd, Eerwah Vale, who are currently before the court for producing dangerous drugs, possession of stolen property and other offences. Road Policing Unit from Nambour have issued 82 infringement notices within Eumundi Division during the month of February. This includes speed camera sites.

Handed into the station after being found by a member of the public was a motorbike bag which had fallen off a bike at some stage. If you have lost a leather bag and can name the contents and brand please come in and see us at the station as we would like to give it back to its owner.

Eumundi Markets Celebrating 40 years Later this month I am looking forward to helping celebrate a very important milestone in the local community, when the team at Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre commemorate 40 years of the iconic, world famous Eumundi Markets.

Many locals will have at least some connection with the Markets, which is renowned for its quality hand crafted arts and craft, so there’s sure to be plenty of shared stories and anecdotes when the ‘First 40 Years’ exhibition is officially launched Saturday 23 March.

Save Crimestoppers Locals may have heard the disappointing news that Crimestoppers will be shut down, after the State Government failed to commit $250,000 to keep the service running. This is a massive blow for our community. Many callers

to Crimestoppers only give information because they can do so anonymously. Tip offs from the public will now be directed straight to the police, who are already overstretched and under-resourced. Given the alarming rate of calls to Policelink that are already abandoned, this is a frightening prospect. Last year, nearly 130,000 calls were abandoned by callers who hung up when their call wasn’t answered.

As I have previously pointed out in Parliament, with the police budget down $44.6 million and police numbers down per capita, the Police Minister has been talking about new, innovative initiatives the QPS have been using to reduce the crime rate. Have Your Say On Landmark Inquiry Last month, a landmark inquiry was announced by the State Government into aged care, end-of-life and palliative care.

This is an important issue that goes beyond politics, and I am keen to hear what locals think about it. The issue of legalised voluntary assisted death is highly emotive, and not one which I will make a decision about without careful consideration of the inquiry’s findings, and the views of the community. Public submissions close on 15 April, while public hearings are expected to commence later this month.

The committee conducting the inquiry is due to present their findings to Parliament towards the end of the year. Contact me to find out how to make a submission, and to share your views. Information is also available on the Queensland Parliament’s website at parliament.qld.gov.au.

Community ORIGINAL EUMUNDI MARKETS F I R S T 4 0 Y E A R S Wendy Birrell, DE manager Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre (DE) is developing an exhibition to commemorate and celebrate the 40th year of the Eumundi Markets. DE has an extensive collection of objects, photographs and documents relating to the history of the Eumundi Markets and will use these resources to create a glimpse into the past of what has become a world famous market.

Many photos and information goes right back to the beginning of the market including the first receipt book which records the market starting on Saturday 24 March 1979 around the Eumundi CWA hall with three stalls and eight visitors (not counting stallholder’s family members).

I’m an omnivore when it comes to reading. Everything from junk food to vegetarian. As a child I devoured science fiction/fantasy comic books along with the classic girl’s books like the Nancy Drew mysteries, Anne of Green Gables and Little Women. I liked books about girls’ lives - ones I could imagine myself in. Nancy Drew and her little red roadster (still wondering where my roadster is!) and Jo in Little Women. I’m the same today. I read the literary prize listers because, although not always perfect, they represent the evolving standard of modern literature. A bit like the Olympics, I guess.

I also read a wide range of nonfiction; and I’m still a fan of ‘popular’ books about women escaping abusive relationships as in Sleeping with the Enemy and Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies. I still like science fiction/ fantasy (Stephen King, Neil Gaiman); psychological thrillers (Nicci French) and the unique style of Kate Atkinson who manages to, “occupy that rare cultural sweet spot wherein she scoops up awards for artistic excellence while also reliably hitting the best-seller lists.”

This is the challenge - and it is probably the place most fiction writers aim for - even the listers.

But no matter how intriguing the story, I just can’t read through bad writing: writing that gets in the way of itself or the story.

So, I was interested to read a recent article by Stella Prize winner (An Isolated Incident) Emily McGuire entitled What is a good book, and should we care? [Guardian, 9 February] in which she talks about the divide between serious writing read by people who read reviews and go to book clubs, and the ‘snobbery’ and ‘denigration’ towards other types of writing: popular fiction. I can agree to a certain extent, but that has not been my experience.

Sport DRAGONS JUNIOR RUGBY CLUB As the dawn broke the Eastern sky over Coolum on Saturday 16 February an intrepid group of young Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union players and their parents climbed the heights of Mt Coolum in one of the club’s annual pre-season activities.

Approximately 20 members took part in the exercise and totally enjoyed the experience.

The views from the top were breathtaking!

Group challenges like this one gives the kids a shared experience and a sense of achievement by doing something that takes a bit of effort. They have to work together to achieve a team goal.

The climb to the top and back which took approximately 45 minutes sharpened their appetites for the free barbeque breakfast of bacon and egg rolls and juice, which was provided by the club, at the picnic and playground area adjacent to the Coolum Beach SLSC. This First 40 Years exhibition looks at the OEM which has been running continuously for 40 years, still under a not for profit company the Original Eumundi Markets Ltd which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Eumundi and District Historical Association (EHA).

Our job was to go to areas impacted by flooding and assist the home-owner in ‘mucking out’ their property. This involved pulling, or dragging, entire home contents out – including carpets - onto the footpath for the army to then dispose of.

I can assure you this was not an easy task. The relentless humidity and 40° plus temperatures were intense. My volunteers didn’t stop all day and it’s a credit to their home brigades how they worked and mixed with each other.

Outdoors NEW ENVIRONMENT GRANTS OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS Noosa Council has approved a new Environment Grants Program to support local conservation projects and the not-for-profit groups that deliver them.

Mayor Tony Wellington said that previously grants with an environmental focus were mixed in with our other community grants. “We have now determined to separate the two grant streams, with environment grants to be funded from the Environment Levy,” Mr Wellington explained.

The program offers one-off project grants of up to $30,000

annually, plus organisational grants to help environment groups cover their operating costs. In addition, new multiyear grants will support major projects that align with Council’s strategic environment goals.

“Large-scale, strategic environmental projects may span a number of years [as] achieving environmental wins is often painstaking, incremental work, Mr Wellington said.

Lake Macdonald Dam is one of several dams across South East Queensland which is about to be upgraded as part of Seqwater’s Dam Improvement Program.

This is the first major upgrade of Lake Macdonald Dam since the wall was raised in 1980.

RESEARCHING RETIREE TRANSPO RT I was reading a Eumundi Green [Issue 308] recently and there was an article about the income and expenses of your organisation, including information about a community bus and how that will in future be coordinated through a taxi service. I was in a waiting room when I read the article.

The reason is that my Mum lives in the Whitsunday region and I have spoken to people in that area about aged people’s subsidised transport and I would like to show them your example. I will also be sending them the details from the Noosa Council site regarding their subsidy of taxi’s once a week to shopping centres for over 60’s.

I have only found out what is available by doing online research and following through with written editorial as I have needed solutions. Many of our oldest people don’t have the resources and the skills to be able to do that and the difficulty to get around and be as independent as possible will only become a bigger issue in the future. I believe wholeheartedly in repeating things as many times as is possible, some of it will stick in the right spot more times than if you didn’t do it?
