HINTERLAND MOMENT

I love that mother nature dictates how we live our lives here in the hinterland. And when you’re surrounded by bushland, native flora and fauna is always encroaching. Which also means snakes are a big part of our lives too – and boy do we grow them big here! (See page 15). I think we should put in a council grant application to run a, “Who has the biggest python living at their place?” competition – because we all think that ‘ours’ would win.

“Apparently this is where Bobby Mitchell and Pep sit on a Saturday morning waiting for Mads to open the servo. It’s the perfect size for the average bum,” they said with a laugh.

Mother nature – and life in general - throws curve balls at us no matter how rich or poor, or young or old, we are. But the one constant we all share is a great love for this little pocket of hinterland paradise in which we live. We can always open a window, stand on a veranda, sit in a garden, or go for a walk, and remind ourselves that when things get hard, we are still lucky - we live here!

Business SALA TURNS 10 Eumundi restaurant Sala Thai recently celebrated an impressive 10 years in business. Owners Jang and John Etheridge invited regular customers, local businesses and their staff to celebrate with them last Tuesday 12 March. When asked about the impressive milestone Jang shared the restaurant’s success is due to Eumundi being such a great, inclusive place. “It has been full of big challenges for us, but the support we’ve been shown by the locals is overwhelming - how lucky we are to be surrounded by this beautiful community and people,” Jang shared.

“Eumundi is John’s home town, we live locally and we are proud to follow the family tradition of owning a business in town after more than 100 years,” Jang enthused.

Jang shared she hopes to continue to offer a traditional Thai menu and, “Have activities so our customers can learn more Thai experience and Thai culture.”

Business LOCALS LOVE TO MUNCH People turned out in impressive numbers for the inaugural Munch foodie event at the Imperial Hotel. Considering the rain, it was great to see so many locals catching up for an afternoon in the village with live music, a plethora of food carts, plus Eumundi brews on tap and Aperol cocktails proving popular.

Imperial Hotel and Eumundi Brewery manager Paul Thomas said the new event was created to showcase the venue and its evolving reputation for swanky music and tasty food. Head Chef Cale Dempsey held a cooking demonstration in the afternoon.

Paul said, “We’ve 100% found our stride with a terrific team on the floor and in the bars,

creating top-notch meals in the kitchen.”

Paul shared that live music will continue to be a big focus for the hotel, especially with Eumundi muso Alice Jones now stepping into the role of booking agent for the pub full time.

She’s also been wooing some bigger acts with established fan bases to travel off the beaten track and play for us here in Eumundi,” Paul enthused.

“It’s great to see our venues full of music loving locals getting behind these exciting performers,” he said.

Paul explained the more these acts draw a crowd, the bigger the name touring acts we can entice to play here. The Imperial’s booking agent Alice Jones agreed, but stressed that

she is also super keen for the hotel to remain a place for new, Sunshine Coast artists to get a break too. Alice said Munch was a great opportunity to give an eclectic mix of artists who show a fantastic diversity of musical talent and style, such as singer/ song writer Gian and gypsy band Miranda Deutsch Duo, a trial in front of a Eumundi crowd.

Munch’s music line up also included The Palomino III. The band had played at the Green room last year in their other rockabilly band configuration called Twang, and had had the room buzzing and dancing all night long. Alice said she had to get them back ASAP. Cont’d on pg 10

Community HORSE TRAIL NETWORK COMPLETED Members of the Sunny Coast Trail Horse Riders Club joined Division 9 Cr Stephen Robinson to view and experience the completed Eumundi Conservation Park trail network near Allendale Rd, Eumundi. Cr Robinson said this trail contributed to our community’s natural and physical wellbeing and aligned with Council’s vision to be Australia’s most sustainable region. The conservation park trails are now joined and visitors can utilise a full trail network amongst the eucalypt open forest and rainforest. “Eumundi Conservation Park offers more than 15km of trails that are all linked up thanks to these recent works,” Cr Robinson explained.

“Our Council crews worked with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service to provide better drainage and to build a reliable trail surface that will remain passable, even in wet weather conditions,” he explained.

The Eumundi Conservation Park has always been popular with the region’s horse riders, including Sunny Coast Trail Horse Riders Club President

Chris Bourne. “As our club members are frequent riders in this park, I am grateful to see the trail extended thanks to this project’s completion,” Ms Bourne said.

“Previously, any wet weather inhibited us from fully enjoying this expansive park, and now we can take advantage of lengthier horseback rides,” she explained.

“I encourage more community members to visit the Eumundi Conservation Park and experience its beautiful trails, whether you’re with a horse, on a bicycle, or simply on foot,” Ms Bourne enthused.

Over the past few years, Sunshine Coast Council has also improved access conditions at both the southern and western entrances to allow for better access to this bushland area.

“This project’s goal was to provide a solution for about 500 metres of trail that was notoriously wet and impassable, to horse riders and hikers.

“This section of unmade road reserve separated the north and south blocks of the park, essentially dividing the park in two,” Cr Robinson said.

Their lively Americana, rockabilly sound was perfect for energising the afternoon festival and carrying it into the early eve with a fun party vibe. The DJ crew of Cleve, Bob and Mark carried the revelers well into the night. Paul shared, “The great roll-up this year certainly inspires us to run with a Munch event next year.

“Hats off to our awesome community for embracing the event and sticking with us despite the date change,” Paul enthused.

For a restaurant to not only survive but to thrive for a decade it needs fantastic food and sensational service. Sala Thai in Memorial Drive has both of those qualities in spades and it was fantastic to be recently invited along to share their 10th birthday celebrations.

I was among around 130 of the restaurant’s regular loyal patrons at this festivity and their appreciation, admiration and respect for this fine establishment and its proprietors John and Jang Etheridge was very evident.

The Cooroy Eumundi Junior Cricket team, the Cooroy Eumundi Cougars, have just finished their 12 week season of cricket undefeated! The kids, aged eight to 10 years, played two seasons of six weeks on Friday nights, against the Coolum and Tewantin teams during the summer program.

These programs are fast packed cricket games with 90 minutes of play. They are designed for equal participation by all members.

There are only six to eight players per team, so each player gets a chance to bat, bowl and field.

They also bat in pairs and face four overs; 12 balls each.

It’s a smaller 14metre pitch with a 20-30 metre boundary.

After each over, the fielding team rotates.

The program is designed to set them up ready for Stage 1 Junior Cricket.

The Cooroy Eumundi Cougars have had great fun and have shown some great skills throughout the season, making them so enjoyable to watch. We thought they deserved some praise - well done boys!

Health EXERCISE FOR TEENS & TWEENS DURING GROWTH Brooke Conlan, personal trainer & mother-of-tween, Eumundi As our children reach their early teens and pre-teen (tween) years they will naturally experience growth spurts. This means their bodies will go through a large amount of bone growth at a rapid rate. During this time the bones will grow faster than usual stretching out the muscles and tendons making joints more unstable and susceptible to injury. As a result a child’s balance, coordination, stability and also posture, can be affected.

Growth spurts occur due to a shift in hormones and are different for boys and girls.

For this reason girls generally experience a growth spurt between 10 and 14 with the average being 12 and on average two years later for boys.

What can we do to help support their growing bodies during this time?

It is imperative to establish strong foundations - this means focusing on building the child’s core strength, correct movement patterns, incorporating balance exercises into their fitness, challenging their coordination

and promoting body awareness such as: correct posture, muscle engagement and awareness of body position and movement.

Any form of power, maximal, explosive lifting or body building should be avoided until children and young people reach physical maturity - meaning the growth plates have fully developed.

Light weights and resistance training are suitable provided the child can perform these with correct technique and form and always under supervision. Using bodyweight however is the best way to start to increase strength safely. Strength training two/ three times a week is ideal for

kids starting from ages seven and up.

If your child is suffering from growing pains (which are a normal part of growing and occur usually in the legs but can be in the arms also) there are things you can try to help alleviate the discomfort: • Applying heat packs directly to the area (personally this worked best for my child) • Rubbing the limbs to generate some heat to the area

The earlier you can incorporate physical activity into your child’s life the better. This will definitely help with both their neurological and physical development as they grow.

Babette Urban, Eumundi Let’s chat about our native birds ... A lot of hinterland locals love to attract birds to their gardens, so they can enjoy their beauty, antics, and company. The obvious way to do this is with food and water, served up with love, on a daily basis. But nature has a way of balancing the ecosystem so that it functions as it is meant to, and when humans interfere with that balance things start to go... skewwhiff. It is easier than you think to “love our birds to death”. Here are a just few reasons why: • All birds live in an environment suited to their specific needs. Water is important, and while birds can extract some moisture from their food, most birds drink water every day. They also use water for grooming.

But if the birds are attracted to your area solely for the water you provide, and come to count exclusively on the water supply in your garden, what happens when you are away and the bowl dries up?

• The health of birds will be impacted by relying on an artificial food source (seed, bread, mince) as they will not be getting the correct balance of nutrients available to them in the wild.

Undernourishment can lead to a number of complications such as susceptibility to disease and a magnified spread of disease; vitamin and calcium deficiency

causing foot/leg paralysis and poor bone and feather development; an increased risk of severely impeding the bird’s ability to fly; a reduction of life expectancy; and poorly developed babies who will not survive • Furthermore, with steady artificial feeding overpopulation will occur resulting in competition for limited nesting sites, and the smaller and less aggressive species will be driven away • Artificially fed birds may become dependent on humans and lose their fear of predators, endangering their lives on a daily basis

But it’s not all bad news. You can still enjoy the birds in your area without upsetting the balance of nature. By all means provide fresh water, as long as other local water sources (dams, creeks) are also available. Plant bird attracting trees, shrubs and flowering natives. Ensure you have a catfree environment. If you must give them a little treat, then make sure it is just that …. a very small treat. Then sit back, relax, and enjoy all the visitors to your garden - even those

If you’re reading this Eumundi Green you live in a very special area. Not only because you get such a nice magazine, but also because of the monster sized snakes we get in this region. The biggest Browns and Red Bellies I have ever caught have almost all come out of this hinterland area and they’re certainly bigger here than anywhere else on the Coast.

You may be wondering why?

This area is very wide spread and with so much bushland around there’s plenty of food for them to gorge themselves on. This translates to native snakes growing very big. The picture of the massive Red Belly (bottom) was taken in Doonan in March earlier this year. It was six foot, two inches long and so chunky! An absolutely beautiful animal. This is why they are my favourite snake. It was a very, very well-fed snake!

So I’m pretty tall. These snakes are massive! You may not like it but you all hold the records for having the biggest snakes around.

Farm animal therapy Animal therapy is not such a strange concept nowadays.

We see dogs used in many situations, such as for assistance dogs, and more recently for autism, anxiety, depression, dementia, PTSD and loneliness. Other animals, such as horses (Equine Therapy), are also becoming more well known as a form of therapy. What is it about animals that can give many a sense of calmness, happiness and a feeling of security?

There is a hypothesis that indicates that human survival was partly dependent on animals in the environment signalling safety or threat.

Wilson’s Biophilia hypothesis indicates that; “if we see animals at rest or in a peaceful state, this may signal to us safety, security and feelings of wellbeing”. (Wilson 1984)

personally find that sitting with my goats and sheep while they lie down and chew their cud is the most relaxing time. I may sit down feeling stressed but end up feeling refreshed and happier after about 10 minutes.

More research is being undertaken on this topic and some findings have shown that it can reduce blood pressure and cholesterol, assist with chronic pain, psychological disorders, autism, ADHD and PTSD. “A study finds that animals may significantly increase positive social behaviours in children who have an autism spectrum disorder.” huffingtonpost.com

President Jill Brownlee explained, “We had our first sale from our propagation shed in December and it was a great success with lots of support from locals and keen gardeners across the region.“ “These plants are propagated from the Noosa Botanic Gardens, or from members’ private gardens, and are all suitable for this region,” she said.

Proceeds from the sale will be reinvested back into the gardens and related projects of the NBGF.

Letters EUMUNDI BUS DRIVER HAD ENOUGH I have employment with a local Eumundi school bus service, namely Noosa Valley Buslines as a School Bus Driver. This is an open letter to Eumundi Green regarding the dangers and poor maintenance of overhanging old wood and general tree branches, across two busy arterial roads: Dean Rd - joining with Stutzholts Rd, and Verrierdale Rd, that make up my school bus run.

I had the recent experience of making contact in the bus with a low hanging branch that was unnoticeable - as it blended in with the background trees.

Fortunately, 50 metres back down the road, I picked up some children, so my speed moving away and up the road towards the fallen branch was

Now, this branch that had snapped down as a consequence, [hit] my windscreen scratching the side mirror, partially the top half of the windscreen, and the roof line, as well as along the side of the bus. Bus owners take a dim view of drivers returning their buses damaged, but Andrew the owner, is familiar with the roads in question, and has been onto Council a number of times with little being done.

The cracking sound alarmed both Craig and Emily, who came running out of their adjacent house, to see what all the noise was about and saw my predicament.

Thankfully with three pulling on a tree (In that moment we were unofficially Council Tree Removal Contractors), the whole branch snapped at the base and crashed down like a falling tree does. We continued dragging it right back off the road, then took some photos and a video and talked about the dangers of dead wood, and overhanging trees, along the afore-mentioned roads.

When I finished my run, I returned to that spot. The tree was still hanging down within my reach, so I tugged on the lowest bunch of leaves. With that, it half fell down, right across the road with a cracking sound, over what is a very busy bit of road - but
