HELPFUL HINTS Employee monitoring

Jenny Brice, Executive Coach, Eumundi The monitoring of employees is on the rise in Australian workplaces. I see it everywhere as I work with businesses. Simple things like logging in times and keystrokes are being measured on a regular basis. However, there are many more non-traditional ways of monitoring employees in the pipeline.

According to US research, people are becoming more comfortable being monitored about work activities but less comfortable with personal data. In 2018 46% of large companies in America were monitoring their employees, up from 30% in 2015. The graph (see above) shows what they are tracking.

Clearly there are many legal, social and privacy issues associated with monitoring employees and there are also some benefits.

One consideration is who owns the data and who can it be onforwarded to? Another is how can data collection help employees in the workplace? For example, some warehouses ask employees to wear belts to track if their back is getting strained to prevent damage before it happens. Whatever your views on these new technologies, have no doubt that Employee Monitoring is becoming big business. *Data source. SHRM

Community HUMDRUM GIVES DIGNITY Humdrum espresso are a collection point for Share The Dignity again this April. A collection box is now set up in store where people can donate unopened packets of tampons, pads and other toiletries. Humdrum owner Pam explained she and co-owner daughter Keisha are really passionate about the cause. “Toiletries and sanitary products are a basic human need that everyone should have access to,” she explained.

Joyce Turnbull, Eumundi Andrew’s Anglican College waited on patrons and provided kitchen hand services to support the beautiful food by chef Cale Dempsey of the Imperial Hotel. Auctions and raffles swelled the income and created some fun with Melony Brests the auctioneer. Elvis impersonator Mark Andrew wowed the crowd. The Rock ‘n Roll Boys soon had keen dancers on their toes supported by the Doo Wop Dolls.

Eumundi Rotary Club’s annual signature fundraiser Eumundi Rotary Long Lunch held on the last Sunday of March was an outstanding success with 300 patrons gathered under the iconic trees of the Original Eumundi Markets, many in rock ‘n roll friendly outfits keen to have fun and to support the provision of palliative nursing care at Katie Rose Cottage Hospice.

Collaboration between 100+ community volunteers ensured an afternoon of rock ‘n roll entertainment and dancing, fine food and wine, lending support for a cause close to the heart of Hinterland residents. Students from hospitality classes at St Theresa’s Catholic College and St

Proposed Eumundi service station update The development of a four pump service station at the southern access, at 10 Memorial Dr has been approved by Sunshine Coast Council and the Department of Transport & Main Roads. Cr Rogerson said that as part of the approval the building design must complement Eumundi’s heritage character and have extensive landscaping on the verge.

The application was lodged on 19 January. Owners of the land, Raymond Charles Ladewig and wife Thelma, who also own the Strawberry farm opposite the proposed site, consented to the Altum Constructions development application under the Planning Act 2016 by Project Urban.

The application included: a flood impact report, impact assessment report and sight plans designed by Maroochydore Architecture firm Blackburne Jackson Design.

Sarah Langford: I don’t think Eumundi needs another service station, it needs a newsagency back!

Shona Kenrick: Be nice to see some sort of bus service around here and some bus stops that we all pay for anyway.

Melody McCaul: This will really by-pass a lot of tourists and people on road trips from the main street. I often get customers mentioning

that they stopped for petrol unexpectedly and really enjoyed their stroll through town checking out and supporting all the little local shops.

Robby Friend: If Eumundi really, really, really needs a new servo, perhaps [then in] a better location and let the locals own it as a co-operative.

Best is large amounts of small shares, so the less affluent might be able to afford shares too. That way the money stays

in the town and not off to big business elsewhere. Just a thought!

Katherine Hartshorne: Yes it’s not what most of us would have had in mind for Eumundi, but spare a thought for the people who live directly opposite this development. Imagine having petrol pumps just across the road - the increased traffic, noise and smell. I really feel for them, but maybe the strawberry farm [owners] own those houses as well?

Sue Molloy: Have to laugh [at] “to complement Eumundi’s Heritage.” We lost that ages ago.

Charlie Mitchell: Is this just the start now? Makes me sad.

Monique Outteridge: Oh no! How horrid. I moved to Eumundi because it didn’t have a big servo or supermarket.

The Verrierdale and Cooroy Halls were full of concerned locals from across the Coast, including facebook group Flight Path Forum, last Thursday night and Saturday morning respectively, when Sunshine Coast Council, Airservices Australia (ASA) and Sunshine Coast Airport, conducted ‘drop-in’ information sessions about the proposed airspace and flight path designs.

Concern was expressed about the proposed flights over the Verrierdale, Yandina Creek, Peregian, Castaways Beach areas.

ASA wind data information states residents in Yandina Creek and Verrierdale between 1000-2000ft on the approach flight path for runway 13, could experience noise impact of up to 75 decibels when directly underneath the flightpath.

Residents in Weyba Downs would experience 67 decibels from aircraft at 2000-3000 feet if directly under the path.

Castaways Residents Association lobby group, want the proposed ‘Green’ flight path scrapped in favour of the ‘yellow’ path crossing Noosa North Shore and reportedly Eumundi/ Tinbeerwah instead.

EUMUNDI POLICE UPDATE Sgt Ryan Hanlon, Eumundi Police 5442 8222 In the month of March we caught three persons drink driving, one drug driving and a total of 86 tickets were issued

by Road Policing Unit (Traffic Branch) and Eumundi Police Station. Eumundi police have also charged three offenders with unlicensed driving and one with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle for hooning offences around town. It is great to see that the number of drink drivers have been reduced, but three is still too many. During the month of March there were a few property and business break and enters/burglary offences committed. If there is any suspicious vehicles seen in your area, we encourage you to report them to the police via POLICELINK on 131 444.

It has been reported from the school zone controllers to police

that speeding cars are still a problem around our Eumundi School area. Please slow down for the safety of the children. It is also a concern seeing children under the age of 12 walking or riding great distances to school without adult supervision. Please make sure school children under 12 are supervised at all times before and after school and when school resumes after Easter.

Eumundi Police station has a new number due to some phone line troubles. The old number is now diverted through to the new number but if everyone could now write down the new number, 5475 2323 and put it on your fridge.

School Principal Francis Klugman explained all Steiner schools engage in seasonal festivals and its been part of the Doonan school’s ethos for 20 odd years.

“At Pengari we celebrate the season of Autumn and show this gratitude through a gathering of nature’s bounty,” he said.

“Seasonal Festivals offer

an important means for our students to connect with the various rhythms and systems in the natural world, building a strong sense of connectedness and understanding,” he explained.

Arts VESSELS EXHIBITION OPENING Ephemeral artist Katrin Terton’s new multi-sensory exhibition entitled The vessel, opened at the Butter Factory in Cooroy last Friday. The pieces encourage viewers to ponder vessels and the infinite ways in which we fill them. “From the literal or poetic, to metaphysical container for our emotions and ideas,” Katrin shared.

“The theme of the exhibition explores the ‘Vessel’ as a container holding something. Whether that might be of a physical quality or intangible like space, emotions or thoughts is what the audience is invited to reflect on,” she explained.

“The subject is examined literally as well as metaphorically, investigating the vessel as a solid object containing and releasing materials, the heart as a vessel holding emotions and the mind as a vessel carrying thoughts,” Katrin said.

Katrin’s son Tim Terton launched the exhibition with a contemporary movement performance suspended from the roof with a fabric swing.

Sport CAPOEIRA COMES TO EUMUNDI Personal Trainer and Martial Arts Coach Snow ‘Trovão’ Bridson is bringing Capoeira to Eumundi this May. Snow explained he was encouraged to come to Eumundi due to local interest and because our community...”is known for its culture and it’s acceptance of diverse cultural practices.”

Capoeira, is a type of dancefighting, it’s a martial art but is infused with Afro-Brazilian culture and traditions that are inseparable to the sport.

It combines Taekwondo with acrobatics and gymnastics, performed to afro drumming.

“Music is inseparable to capoeira - it’s in the songs and rhythms played that we use to pass on the philosophies and the culture born in Brazil,” he said.

The Noosa and Hinterland Netball season was officially launched recently at the Tewantin courts with the traditional Team March Past.

The 48 teams in eight divisions, displayed their team spirit by creating colourful banners, costumes and chants that reflect their team names. Noosa District Netball President, Bev Bullivant, explained the march past has always been a big part of netball in the past but that associations are struggling to keep the colourful tradition alive. “It’s [becoming] difficult to continue, mainly due to time restraints and the business of people’s lives,” she explained.

“The tradition started in our association around 38 years ago and we have no intention of stopping now!” she enthused.

Ayurveda, originating in India, is an ancient traditional health practice and philosophy thought to date back more than 5000 years ago and predates written records. These layers stretch like a hammock from the tailbone at the back, to the pubic bone in front. A woman’s pelvic floor muscles support her bladder, womb (uterus) and bowel (colon).

The urine tube (front passage), the vagina and the back passage all pass through the pelvic floor muscles. Your pelvic floor muscles help you to control your bladder and bowel. It is vital to keep your pelvic floor muscles strong.

Unfortunately, many women feel the pressure of getting back into shape post birth. This, however, is not always the best course to take. Our bodies take months even up to 12 months - to fully recover from child birth. If we do not pay attention to our pelvic floor rehabilitation post birth, we may experience much more serious issues later on, even years later.

Women of all ages need to have strong pelvic floor muscles.

Pelvic floor muscles can be made weaker by: • not keeping them active; • being pregnant and having babies; • constipation;

Your bladder may not empty the way it should if you stop and start your stream more often than that.

How Do I Strengthen My Pelvic Floor Muscles?

Squeeze and draw in the muscles around your back passage and your vagina at the same time. Lift them UP inside.

You should have a sense of “lift” each time you squeeze your pelvic floor muscles. Try to hold them strong and tight as you count to 8. Now, let them go and relax. You should have a distinct feeling of “letting go”.

Repeat “squeeze and lift” and let go. It is best to rest for about 8 seconds in between each lift up of the muscles. If you can’t hold for eight, just hold for as long as you can. Repeat this “squeeze and lift” as many times as you can, up to a limit of eight to 12 squeezes. Try to do three sets of eight to 12 squeezes each, with a rest in between. Do this whole training plan (three sets of eight to 12 squeezes) each day while lying down, sitting or standing.

While doing pelvic floor muscle training: keep breathing; only squeeze and lift; do NOT tighten your buttocks; and keep your thighs relaxed.

The first thing to do is to find out which muscles you need to train. Sit or lie down with the muscles of your thighs, buttocks and stomach relaxed. Squeeze the ring of muscle around the back passage as if you are trying to stop passing wind. Now relax this muscle. Squeeze and let go a couple of times until you are sure you have found the right muscles. Try not to squeeze your buttocks. When sitting on the toilet to empty your bladder, try to stop the stream of urine, then start it again. Do this to learn which muscles are the right ones to use – but only once a week.

It’s important to remember before returning to exercise to see a physiotherapist who specialises in women’s health.

They can then do an accurate assessment on your current pelvic floor strength and, if need be, prescribe exercises to further strengthen your pelvic floor or work through other issues, such as incontinence. Without this professional assessment you may be doing more harm than good by rushing back into exercise before your body is ready.

You should also gradually return to cardio vascular exercises and strengthening exercises.

Always seek a qualified fitness professional who is trained in and familiar with appropriate exercises for post-natal clients.

Your fitness professional should suggest supported positions for strength training such as single leg lifts on a swiss ball, then gradually increase the load along with a focus on pelvic floor activation.

Also focusing on exhaling on the more difficult phase of movement during each exercise can help to focus on pelvic floor activation.

Outdoors I A M A WAT E R D R A G O N I’m an extremely special animal as I come from a very ancient line of lizards. Water Dragons have been around for about the same time as crocodiles around 20 million years! We are protected too, so do be nice to us please.

Many of my family and friends live in this area, maybe some of us are in your garden? Water Dragons like being near water and like to climb around in trees and overhanging branches. This is called an arboreal lifestyle … is this something like your tree change? I sometimes come down to bask on rocks or logs in filtered sun, and to find food.

I am a fast runner and a strong climber as I have powerful legs and claws. When I run it is usually on four legs, but when I want to go really fast I arch up and lift my front legs off the ground - you should see me go! I have a long muscly tail for swimming. And a real bonus is if I lose my tail I can even grow a new one!

I can eat underwater and hold my breath for up to an hour or more. I can even sleep underwater with my nostrils protruding like a crocodile.

Water Dragons are omnivorous, meaning that I eat almost anything from insects to small rodents, small birds, eggs, fish and other invertebrates. I have a sticky tongue to strike my prey with, and I hang on to them with my sharp teeth. When I grew into an adult I ate lots more vegetable matter, which became about half of my diet. I am good at finding my own food, so I don’t need any human help in that respect.

Unfortunately, I have predators so I have to keep a keen lookout for carnivorous birds, snakes, cats, dogs and foxes. My method of communication with my rivals is to bob my head, inflate my throat pouches, wave my arms, and do push-ups.

I might look scary to some as

I have a large angular head and spiky spines all the way down my body, two-thirds of which is my tail. But I am not dangerous and would never try to hurt you. In fact, I would probably run away and hide long before you realise I’m there. I have patterns on my body that give me great camouflage in grass and leaves. I like to shed my skin regularly, and I do it by immersing my entire body in water and wriggling around madly to peel it off.

We breed during spring, laying six to 18 eggs in burrows in sand or soft soil, and covering the nest with loose debris.

The heat of the sun warms the nest to incubate the eggs, and the sex of the hatchlings is determined by the temperature of the nest site.
