READ THE GREEN ON YOUR DEVICE
One of the perks of living in the hinterland is sharing the trees with lots of beautiful, rare birds. I’ve been interrupted this edit by a cluttering of four black cockatoos. Their squawks, chattering and crunching called me from the desk into the garden pretty much every day. The attraction was a tall banksia tree. But I don’t think they’ll be frequenting for much longer. They’ve laid waste to the tree’s big brown flowers. The cockatoos crack off and feed on the Banksia serrata seedpods nestled in the flower’s bristles. But once the birds finish stripping the plant of its tasty morsels they snip off the branch! Perhaps the collective noun should be... a ravishing, or a decimation of cockatoos?! Regardless, I need to plant more banksias. This issue we celebrate many of our local artists – those that paint and those that brew.

Business RAIN OR SHINE EUMUNDI’S BEER FEST IS MIGHTY FINE For the second year, the Hinterland Craft Beer Festival in Eumundi was threatened by rain, and for the second year, no one minded a bit. With a crowd of around 3,000 descending on the town from across the Coast, if anything, the rain kept the festival fun and manageable – no huge cues for brews or food. The brewer’s talks were a highlight, as was the live music, and DJ Cleve kept happy revellers in the Outback
Brewery Bar dancing well into the night. Darker ales and IPA’s proved the festival favourites with Eumundi Brewery and Brouhaha from Maleny attracting the longest lines. Locals raved about Donnie Dark Ale and Sally IPA from new brewery at the fest, Your Mates. Moffat Beach Brewery, also first timers at the fest, also impressed with their IPA Psychotic Girl. GHOST WORKERS Jenny Brice, Executive Coach, Eumundi Have you heard the term Ghost Workers? They are invisible workers who help make the internet run smoothly and how it works is told in a new tell all book called Ghost Work. So how does it work? Imagine you have just called an Uber and an Uber driver named Steve responds. It is his first call for the day. The night before Steve has shaved off his beard and when he uses his face to check into the system it does not recognise him. His account is suspended until he can be verified. This is where the ghost worker comes in. An automatic global job alert goes out for a human to verify Steve’s face because the system was unable to. Ali, a ghost worker in India, is sitting at her kitchen table and she accepts the job. She has to confirm or deny if it is really Steve booking into work. She confirms it is Steve and within seconds he proceeds to pick you up with little time delay. Tens of thousands of workers are helping the internet function every day. Anyone sitting in front of a web browser could answer an automated request for help. They do all sorts of jobs. They flag X-rated content, transcribe audio, confirm identities like Steve’s and much more. Some people do it as a fulltime job while others supplement their income. As these ghost workers are invisible, they often earn less than legal minimums, have no labour laws to protect them and can be fired for no reason. An estimated 8% of Americans have worked in the ghost economy and the number is growing every day. Jennybrice.com.au

Business Cont’d from pg 5 Eumundi Brewery’s No Fast Moves coffee stout was also a big winner, as was the Orange Blush. Imperial manager Paul Thomas shared, “Our most popular brew on the day was our Mid Strength Pale Ale - jointly with our seasonal Cannabock - unfortunately there is very little of the Cannabock left on tap at the hotel!” he said. When asked if the festival had delivered Paul shared, “Our aim was to bring Sunshine Coast locals to the hotel and the festival.” “We also see it as the biggest event in Eumundi and we like to see our community benefit from that. In talking with some of the businesses they did get an afternoon increase in trade after the markets had finished,” he said. “Tourists of course would come if they saw the marketing that we had done, but they were not our aim,” he explained.

Community MEN’S SHED FOR EUMUNDI? It’s been over three years since the first community consultation was held at the old scout hut on Memorial Dr (beside the Aquatic Centre), to garner interest in establishing a men’s shed for Eumundi. EDCA, CWA and Rotary member and community champion, Janet Millington, is keen to get the ball rolling again. “At this point we are only at the community education stage and gaining support.” “What we need to do at this point is show the opportunity and the benefits of growing a Eumundi men’s shed,” Janet explained. Janet has invited President of the successful Coolum Men’s Shed, Warren “Wazza” Evans to speak at Rotary’s next meeting on Thursday 11 July. Visitors are invited to attend at the QCWA hall, Memorial Dr from 5.30pm. Now in its third year, the Coolum men’s shed aims to offer a place for local men a place where they can “communicate, interact and ponder life’s little problems,” as well as learn, use or rediscover skills and trades whilst they “maintain and improve their
well-being and health.” 4562’s Councillor Greg Rogerson is a great supporter of the concept and has helped establish a number of other men’s sheds in his division; Nambour and Mapleton and the ‘Woodies’ at Montville. When asked why he thinks men’s sheds are effective and what they offer the community, Cr Rogerson said participants do a lot more than, “make things with wood and metal,” they also offer a place where “mates” can help each other out mentally and physically – especially when it comes to the trials and tribulations of retirement. “When most people are asked what happens in men’s shed’s the common answer is that they tinker with bloke things like wood and metal,” he said. “In my mind men’s sheds are primarily open environments in which the masculine variety can freely express worldly problems, share a joke, make a friend or two - three or four - and be treated as an equal amongst ex-brain surgeons, tradies or blue-collard workers alike,” he enthused.

First concept plan of the community garden which also includes a possible space for a men’s shed. Eumundi & District Community Group (EDCA) currently has a 10 year lease on the northern end of the recreational space adjacent to the old scout hall on Memorial Dr and are currently in the arduous process of establishing a community garden in the space. EDCA is waiting for infrastructure of three phase power and water by Cont’d on pg 8

During this financial year council will look to engage with the local community to find out what you love about Eumundi and what you think could be done to improve the streetscape. The feedback that you provide will help to develop an action plan for future township improvements, taking into account the huge potential of Memorial Dr and its exceedingly wide footprint. Get your thinking caps on, start to gather your ideas and be ready to share them with council when the engagement period opens. As I’ve said many times, Eumundi is a jewel in the crown of the Sunshine Coast and I’m committed to doing everything in my power as your divisional councillor to ensure that tourism and business opportunities in this great town are maximised, whilst still maintaining the historic charm and ambience for all local residents. Lucrative Lonergans Lane? Investigations are underway for the establishment of additional market spaces off Lonergan Lane. The aim of this change is to help the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce generate some additional income which could then be spent within the town for the betterment of Eumundi. Currently, the area being investigated is poorly drained with a fairly decent ‘safety risk’, in the form of protruding concrete guttering. My intention is to bring a much needed concrete pathway from Dick Caplick
Park into Lonergans Lane and establish additional market stall sites. Once again, watch this space for more details as things progress. Flying Fox first steps I recently met with a number of flying fox manufacturers and will soon be progressing a full tender document to get this fun project off the ground – pun intended! Community wishes granted! Council recently endorsed more than $590,000 in grants to community groups, clubs and organisations across the Sunshine Coast. This funding will help support a total of 103 community projects, including a couple right here in Eumundi. Congratulations to the Eumundi School of Rock which received $2,000 towards an end of semester concert as part of annual music program for young people which aims to nurture youth culture and reignite the musical roots in Eumundi! This concert will take place in August. Congratulations also to the Sunny Coast Trail Horse Riders Club Inc. which received $7,500 towards trailhead infrastructure at North Arm Rd in Eumundi State Forest. This project aims to establish a parking area for horse floats at the trailhead to improve safety and provide safer access to Eumundi Conservation Park for horse riders and other recreation users. Well done!
Council to the small shed before the obligatory carpark can be surfaced and the site becomes a functional community space. Once this happens, Janet would like to see the men’s shed established. “Very few men’s sheds have had the opportunity to access land and a structure before the establishment of a group,” she enthused. When asked what this community needs to make this happen, Cr Rogerson said, “A band of like-minded individuals, intent on providing friendship and camaraderie within their local community.”
Coolum’s impressive men’s shed was established in 2016.
Think a Eumundi men’s shed is a great idea? Want to help get the project happening? Head along this Thursday 11 July to the CWA hall (blue building), Memorial Dr, 5.30pm. Or email Janet at miltech@bigpond.com.

Arts New mural for vibrant Eumundi cont’d from pg 9 “We got to talking with John and then the concept came to fruition,” Paul shared. John Murray went on to explain that Jack Mackenzie from the bottleshop is a huge dog lover and knows all the dogs that come through the drive through with their owners. “He has a wall of dog pics and is always there with a smacko for the regular dogs - so
it was a very good fit!” John enthused. An established artist, John travels between his homes and studios in Eumundi and Lightning Ridge (on the Qld border near St George and Cunnamulla) with his photographer wife Viki. “Lightning Ridge is my outback and longterm creative home - and the location of my commercial gallery, which also represents my wife Viki’s work,” he explained. “It is on the edge of the outback, and more remote places that inspire my art are accessible from there easily,” he shared.
Photos: Sacha HMcL John Murray’s mural entitled Jack’s Dogs features John’s pooch.
John is fascinated by the Australian outback and his paintings are reflective of that. “My work has two main themes: realistic portrayals of inland Australia and bush life;
and using animals (like emus) to portray quirky and larrikin human traits and observations,” he said. In 2003 the creative couple started escaping from the extremely hot, outback summers to the Noosa hinterland. They fell in love with the beauty of the area - particularly the township and community of Eumundi. “Though the geography and climate are at polar opposites the two communities have that same feel and attraction, with people being positive, friendly, welcoming - and slightly eclectic - so we fit in quite well,” John shared. “We are now lucky enough to have a dual lifestyle, spending equal amounts of time in both equally great communities,” he said. Jack Mackenzie shared that the Imperial Hotel staff love the end result and pub visitors are loving the new addition. “The feedback has been so amazing we’re going to nominate it for the Australian Street Art Awards,” Jack enthused. johnmurrayart.com.au

Health TYPES OF MASSAGE Massage is one of the oldest healing traditions. Ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Chinese, Koreans and Indians believed in the therapeutic properties and used massage to treat a variety of ailments and promote relaxation. Massage therapy is the practice of manipulating a person’s muscles and soft tissue through a variety of techniques in order to reduce pain and improve well-being and health. It is a form of manual therapy that includes effleurage, holding, moving, applying pressure and stretching muscles, tendons ligaments and fascia for increased range of motion, reduction in pain and increased mobility. Massage gives deep relaxation and calmness because during a treatment the release endorphins occurs - this is the neurotransmitters that produce feelings of wellbeing. Levels of stress or hormones such as adrenalin, cortisol or norepinephrine, are also reduced. Studies show that high levels

Types of massage Remedial Massage focuses on improving specific problems dealing with pain and soft tissue injuries, tendonitis, inflammation, neck, back and shoulder pain, rotator cuff injuries, frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel, hip and knee injuries, sciatic pain etc. using specific stretching, massage and mobilisation techniques. Sports Massage enhances athletic performance, helps with warm up, recovery, rehabilitation and pre and post training to reduce risk of injury. Deep Tissue Massage gets down to the deeper layers of muscle, tendons, fibres, fascia - connective tissue and helps release chronic patterns of tension in the body through a variety of techniques. EUMUNDI VILLAGE PHARMACY
The Busy Chicks shared a cosy evening in June in the CWA hall kitchen baking bread, making candles, creating boro stitch bookmarks and finishing the evening with a hearty meal of hot crusty bread with pumpkin soup, followed by a desert of bread and lashings of lemon butter. If you would like to share some of that delicious cosiness with your loved ones, here are the simple, yet delicious recipes we made. Rustic Bread Makes one loaf Ingredients • 3 cups bread flour (plus extra for kneading) • 1 ½ cups lukewarm water • ½ tsp yeast • ½ tsp salt Method Preheat oven to 60°C. In an ovenproof bowl, combine bread flour with yeast, then add lukewarm (if the water is too hot the dough won’t rise) water. Cover bowl with a tea towel
and place in the oven to rise for approx. two hours. Turn oven off while bowl is inside the oven. Once dough has risen remove from oven.
• 50g chopped butter
Preheat the oven to 190°C.
• ¼ cup lemon juice.
Place dough onto a floured surface and knead a little.
Method
Place the kneaded dough in a baking paper lined oven proof dish and bake for 30 minutes at 190°C till golden brown. Lemon Butter Makes approx. 1 cup Ingredients
• 1 lightly whisked egg • 2 tsp finely grated lemon rind
In a small saucepan combine all ingredients. Gently stir over a low heat till mixture boils and thickens. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool. Once set, serve with freshly baked bread and a cuppa – yum!
• ½ cup sugar

Thank you to everyone who came along to our open day tree planting in June. About 100 trees, shrubs, grasses and ferns were planted by locals. Picabeen palms, tree ferns and pretty native shrubs will help enhance the aesthetics of Eumundi’s Sunken Garden on Pacey St. It truly is a special place. There was such a wonderful group of people of all ages at the event which shows that Eumundi has a strong community vibe.
My heart pounded in my chest as my eyes darted around trying to determine where we were. Showing the map to my parents, we felt the challenge that faced us. The markings on the map were not replicated in our surroundings, and to make matters worse we had accidently got the wrong maps. This orienteering was going be our most confronting task. Most people would cringe at the thought of being lost in the muddy forest surrounded by rough terrain, dense bush and wildlife of all kinds. But for my family and I, this was adrenaline junky heaven. Our day began with us all being determined and ready for our orienteering action in Pomona. Orienteering is a sport where you find markers that earn you points. You can do it on bikes or by foot. Each marker
EUMUNDI BUSHCARE GROUP
rewards you with 10 points. Once we had our map issue sorted, we were excited to get on the track. We rode our bikes to a tranquil place where we could discuss what marker we would hit first. We used the railway as our guideline to work out where we were. Cont’d on pg 18

We had lovely coffee made by Terri with the Deadly Espresso on Walkabout mobile coffee van, which is a SevGen social enterprise based in Eumundi at the Pavilion market site. We also had yummy cakes and finished the planting with a sausage sizzle cooked up by our Sunshine Coast Council bushcare officer Brendan Stephen. We also had lots of fun sculpting tree faces with clay! It was so much fun and was amazing to see the individual artistic creations. Thank you to Jane Welsh for providing the clay and teaching me a new word – Ephemeral. And this was ephemeral tree art at its best! As soon as we got (yet more) rain in the following days the faces were washed away. Luckily, we captured the beautiful morning when

the Sunken Garden was transformed into an ephemeral art exhibition. Sunday 28 July is National Tree Day and Sunshine Coast Council will be hosting a tree planting at Doonan Creek Environmental Reserve in Verrierdale from 8.30am. Eumundi Bushcare Group won’t be holding our regular working bee on that day as we’ll all be at this planting. Our next working bee will be Sunday 25 August. New recruits or curious onlookers welcome.
Letters NOTICES
EUM UND I WAT ER POL LUT ION I have lived in Eumundi for five years and I walk my dog down Napier Rd, down past the Original and Square Market areas, three to four times a week. I have noticed over the years some pollution in the grassy drains and water ways by the public toilet s and back of market area, but this in the last few weeks it’s been the worse I have ever seen. The grassy drains and pipes that lead from the back of the toilet s and marketplaces travel under the road and into the creek on the opposite side, connecting alongside the dirt carpark and caravan grounds off Napier Rd. There is a very visible milky discoloration of the water, as well as many spots of very bubbly and stagnant water. You can see in one of my photos where the chemical water is coming from and you can clearly see in
Wanted! Experienced beekeeper to help manage 13 healthy beehives. Located off Eumundi Range Rd. Please phone or text Sandra on 0410 521 301
another photo where that milky water enters the clean creek water. I cannot tell where the drains are coming from, it could be a number of areas around or in the markets and central town. I have emailed Sunshine Coast Council and asked them to assess the situation, find its source and to stop any more pollution entering the nearby local creek. Olivia Denmead, Eumundi.

reviews for other age groups as well! Nice work Eve! Regards, Cooroy mum (name withheld so as not to embarrass teen).
I wanted to thank you for the great reviews written in the last issue of the Green [319]. The teen book reviewer, Eve Petrides, did a fantastic job of reviewing three books that are suitable and relevant to kids her own age. It helped me out tremendously when trying to purchase something appropriately ‘interesting’ for my daughter. It can be quite a challenge to get the right book, for the right age, that also sparks their imagination - so thank you. I would also love to see some
THE END
EWC had run its course: we couldn’t attract enough members this year to make the film society financially
sustainable. Our last screening was our 60th, so our finalé was a significant milestone in itself. I’d like to thank the Green again for your constant support over EWC’s five and a half year lifespan. We may not have had sufficient numbers at the end to keep going, but those people that did attend were supportive and encouraging. And by stopping halfway through the year, we have enough funds to give everyone half of their yearly subscription back - leaving no outstanding debts. Very kindest regards, Arnold Kopff, Eumundi World Cinema director.

Our first successful marker sparked a fire in our bellies. Our journey was not an easy one. A massive puddle that covered the whole path emerged and I underestimated the depth of it. Thanks to dad, he hoisted me out and we continued the trek. Ninety minutes was all we had to complete the task. Any time after would result in a 10 point deduction per minute that was overtime. With only one second overtime, we checked in and our mission was a success! Phew! Orienteering, another activity to be discovered in our hinterland.
