CWA REPORT

Hinternoosa proudly welcomes Krystal Kavanagh to the Hinternoosa team Krystal began in the Property Management industry in 2005 as an assistant property manager in a small, rural Queensland town. Her passion for real estate had her promoted, becoming a property manager and receiving a Queensland award for her contributions and efforts in 2010. Krystal then relocated to Western Australia, taking on the challenge of living in the Kimberleys, working for a large Real Estate company with a portfolio of over 1000 properties. Working in such a remote, culturally diverse area has equipped Krystal with the skills necessary to deal with a multitude of unique situations. Krystal’s experience and approach to property management is a great asset to our landlords and tenants alike at Hinternoosa.

Notes Editor’s note ... This cooler, sunny weather means gardening and renovating is happening in full swing across the hinterland as we prep for those hot, summer months. The Eumundi Fire Brigade want us burning off our garden waste now before bushfire season kicks in. A spate of break-ins reminds us that even though we know our neighbours and feel safe here in our pretty hinterland haven – removed from the rest of the Coast - it doesn’t mean we should be lulled into a sense of safety. Crime happens here too and Eumundi police ask us to please lock up our cars and houses.

HOUSES OF EUMUNDI Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre (DE) is planning an exhibition in its Wan’din’in arts space on Eumundi houses; the various styles of house, what we love about our homes, who lived in our houses long ago and even who built them. Researchers are also interested in collecting memories people have of living in Eumundi houses. DE are hoping for donations or the loan of some photos from the community. If you think you may be able to help with this project then email, phone or drop in. 5442 8762 or info@discovereumundi.com.

Their work on the Eumundi School of Arts Hall picked up the award for Alterations/Additions: Public Buildings. Brett said, “This was a renovation project of a neglected community hall including revamped toilets, bar and side entry.” “We really wanted to help give

It meant a number of queries or concerns; such as parking inspectors on market days, and Council’s budget allocation for place making could be discussed. Chamber President David Perez stated, “The member’s chat session was great and we’ve already written to Sunshine Coast Council on both these issues and we hope to have further updates for members prior to the next breakfast function.” Vice President Cindy Suters shared it was lovely to see so many members all together catching up. “I love to introduce new members.” New ECC membership take up has been steady and strong with a 22% growth over the last quarter, with three new members in the last month: Brooke Conlan from B Active Personal Training; Vicki Pain of Ray White Rural Eumundi; and Sue Campin from Eumundi Guesthouse B&B returning. eumundichamber.com.au

Community Cont’d from pg 7 Barrie told the audience that the loss of over 500,000 head of cattle is a massive hit to the industry. Many of these family farming operations have lost their core breeders which will take them years to replace. After being in drought and feeding these animals for seven years, these farmers need all the help they can get and now it’s time to give these farmers a boost with rebuilding their herd numbers. “Many farmers will have no income for at least 12 or 18 months, maybe longer, so this campaign is offering them practical support,” Barrie said.

Community M U R K Y WAT E R In a recent letter to the Green [Issue 320], Eumundi local Olivia Denmead, expressed her concern “about some pollution in the grassy drains and waterways by the public toilets and back of the market area [down Napier Rd].” “The grassy drains and pipes that lead from the back of the toilets and marketplaces travel under the road and into the creek on the opposite side, connecting alongside the dirt carpark and caravan grounds off Napier Rd. There is a very visible milky discolouration of the water, as well as many spots of very bubbly and stagnant water.” On reading the letter, concerned

Original Eumundi Market (OEM) manager Jan Ammitzboll has investigated the possibility that OEM was the culprit behind the murky water. Jan said, “Upon investigation, the pollution in fact is coming from the storm water drains leading down from Gridley St.” “As you would be aware there are several building sites in Crescent Rd at present and they may be responsible?” Jan queried. “At no time do the markets or our stallholders pour waste into the stormwater so to read this was quite distressing,” she shared. “I’m sure that council will track down the culprits and report back,” she said.

APOLOGY FOR HINTERLAND HOME BREAKINS Police have reported that three people were responsible for several home break-ins around the hinterland over the last couple of weeks at which the perpetrators ate the homeowner’s food, slept in beds and stole belongings. At one of the break-ins an apology note was found saying an ice addiction was to blame for the theft. At another unrelated break-in in the area police found another note that said, “I can only hope you’re insured.” Noosa Heads CIB said that the thieves were targeting unoccupied homes and

farmhouses from Belli Park to Eerwah Vale, leaving the properties ransacked and in disarray. Tools, jewellery, TV’s and clothing were taken. At one property an offender used the owner’s chainsaw to cut down a tree on the property. A 33 year-old man has now been arrested, with a 22 yearold woman helping police with enquiries. Police continue to look for another man believed to be driving a grey Mitsubishi Pajero and towing a box trailer. To assist police call PoliceLink on 131 444 or Eumundi station on 5475 2323.

The next time you’re in the world famous Eumundi Markets you’re sure to notice the new concreting works at the bottom of the terraces. This 80m by 2.9m stretch of concrete pathway was put in to improve drainage, safety and ease of access for stall holders and patrons. These works jointly funded by the Eumundi Historical Association (EHA), Eumundi & District Historical Association (EDCA) and the Eumundi Combined Community Organisation (ECCO). I’d like to extend a very big thankyou to Anthony Law and Tony Law Concreting along with their and hardworking crew who carried out these works in such a timely and efficient manner. Nowadays we’re quick to blow the horn on poor service or a bad customer experience but we’re not so forthcoming when credit is due. Well, in this instance, credit certainly is due for a job very well done by an outstanding local business. Take it to the bank I’m pleased to report that we’re getting ever closer to installing an ‘envirobank’ recycling pod at the bottom of the Eumundi Markets, in the council carpark area. I’m referring to those portable stations which enable people to recycle bottles and cans in exchange for money.

A concrete slab to accommodate the envirobank was recently poured alongside the council carpark at the bottom of the Eumundi Markets. I’d like to again thank Anthony Law and Tony Law Concreting for carrying out this work, which I paid for through my councillor discretionary funding. Given that parking is at a premium in this carpark on market days, I’m investigating options to turn one or two bays which are directly adjacent to where the pod will be placed into ‘short term’ spots, to enable people to quickly and easily access the envirobank during busy periods. B-Well and Prosper in business Owning a small to medium sized business is one of the toughest ventures that anyone can embark upon in our increasingly stressed, time poor and overwhelming world. For anyone out there who is doing it tough or even if you aren’t, I really urge you and your staff to check out a new free online portal which is now available to help you deal with the stresses of business and build better mental health. It’s called ‘B-Well and Prosper’ and it’s the first of its kind in Australia. Visit bwell.mindstar. com.au for more information.

KRCH has provided 24/7 end of life care for the past nine months, serving 30 patients ranging in age from 36 to 98. KRCH Chairperson Carol Raye explained the hospice gained accredited status in June. “This was a very significant achievement for the hospice team and ensures the ongoing, high quality care aligns with the expectations and requirements established by the National Safety & Quality Health Service Standards,” Carol explained. “We’ve worked hard to establish ourselves and prove the cottage hospice model to government [but] to date we have not been able to secure the same long term funding the six Queensland 12

hospices and outreach services already rightfully enjoy and have enjoyed for many years,” she said. Carol shared that KRCH seeks genuine partnership with government to secure the service for the community. The service offered by KRCH can be provided at about one third the cost of public hospital based palliative care. The business plan has always included a component of funding from the government. Music EUMUNDI SCHOOL OF ROCK ROAD TRIP Four years ago, Katie Noonan had an idea of starting a scholarship based program for young 4562 kids who have a passion for music - and so the Eumundi School of Rock was born. Every year this program gets bigger and better. After an audition process, 20 students from eight to 13 years of age were chosen. The kids range from; singers, keyboard, guitar, drums and there’s even a brass section. Then these lucky musicians started their one-onone lessons with some amazing award winning mentors. One of this year’s recipients, 10 year old Emma Broderick (my daughter) whose instrument of choice is the flute, shared, “Our mentors were completely amazing, they taught us different ways to listen to music, comprehend music and feel music.“ “The woodwind and brass section were lucky enough to have Zac Hurren and Dallas Frasca help learn [stage craft] to play in front of a crowd... I used to be nervous but now I feel quite comfortable playing in front of 300,” Emma said. Do you remember going on a school excursion when you were a kid? I do - it was to visit the Humes Concrete Pipe factory in Brisbane - Woo Hoo! Well these kids didn’t get to look at concrete BUT they did receive free tickets to see the School of Rock musical at the Lyric Theatre in Southbank. Plus they got to go backstage and meet the cast.

David Broderick, Eumundi School of Rock Parent, Doonan

I would like to put out a special thanks to the legends from the School of Rock musical for organising this and making this excursion really special. On the way home from Brisbane, the chatter in the back seat of the car was about performing on the stage of the Lyric Theatre. These kids had such a great time watching the performance of the younger members of the cast, I think it may have inspired some of them in ways we can’t imagine. I know my daughter Emma woke up the next morning with her arms swinging about, she had dreamt she was the conductor standing above the orchestra pit. “School of Rock has not only taught me so much about music but also built up confidence and belief in myself,” Emma said. It is only weeks to go now until the Eumundi School of Rock big performance and they get to channel all the inspiration and stage craft they learnt on the excursion into practice. Last week the kids had their first band rehearsal. I was lucky enough to be there and these kids were into the groove straight away. Myself - I can’t wait to see the end result of these 20 students on Saturday 24 August. Also performing at this concert is five times Aria Award winning and seven platinum selling artist, Katie Noonan, along with the incredible local band Mufassa and the Pride, as well

as the Eumundi School of Rock Showband which is seven of the program’s past students invited back for the night.

Outdoors V E R R I E R D A L E T R E E P L A N T I N G D AY The hinterland took part in the National Tree Day event on Sunday 28 July with a planting at the Doonan Creek Environmental Reserve, near Doonan Bridge Rd, Verrierdale. 355 volunteers - 196 adults and 159 kids - from across the Coast joined the Bush Care volunteers to plant around 3000 native trees, shrubs and groundcovers on the day. The majority of the reserve (252ha) was acquired through Sunshine Coast Council’s environment levy land acquisition program in 2013, creating a total protected area of 334 hectares of diverse habitat, ranging from iconic coastal health, scribbly gum forest to melaleuca wetlands. Within the Doonan Creek Environmental Reserve Management Plan, it was identified that the area of pasture within the reserve is to be reduced through replanting for offsets and community revegetation projects.

Sunshine Coast Council Senior Community Conservation Officer, Wendy Cliff explained the native species planted were selected in line with the Doonan Creek Environmental Reserve Management Plan with the aim of enhancing existing biodiversity values and improving the overall resilience of vegetation. “When revegetating we look at what vegetation communities and species previously occurred there and use that information to drive our species selection,” she explained. “When undertaking revegetation in this Reserve we also consider the requirements of koalas and include food trees like Eucalyptus microcorys, E. tereticornis and E.propinqua when tree planting,” Wendy shared. If you’re interested in joining Bush Care you can attend the next planting event, or volunteer with your school or business. sunhinecoast.qld.gov.au/bushcare.

Emerson Rogers, Year 3, ESS Ignite English

The slippery, moist moss that covers the fallen tree trunk, felt cool under my feet. Balancing carefully, I looked at the clear blue water below. Knowing that the water was cold, I was careful not to slip in. The feeling of relief, as I approached the end of the log, soon vanished when I heard my brother approaching from behind. You can guess what happened next! The last thing I felt was his hands on my back before I fell in. I hit the water with a splash. As I surfaced and wiped the water from my eyes, I saw my brother laughing hysterically. The icy water took my breath away and gave me goose bumps. I quickly climbed back on the log determined to make him pay for pushing me in. I knew it wouldn’t be as cold the second time I got in, so I cannonballed off the log back into the cool Booloumba Creek water. I tried to convince my brother that it was not that cold and it was great fun in the creek. Finally, my convincing worked and in he jumped. We had great fun, but he agreed with me that the water was freezing.

surface for the creek’s water to flow over and for me to walk on as I wade through the water. I can also sometimes see catfish in the water. When I spot their orange bodies, I take the opportunity to try and jump on one, but I always fail as they are too fast for me.

The waters of Booloumba Creek are always crystal clear. It is so clear that I can see the rocky bottom that provides a smooth

I love our visits to Booloumba Creek. Such as refreshing place to visit and swim on a hot day.
