Business L I N K E D I N : W H E R E T O S TA R T It’s a similar story for many business owners – you’ve been in the game for a while, you’re overwhelmed with responsibilities and things just aren’t doing as well as you thought. Long gone are the days of promoting your brand through word of mouth and advertising. In a technology driven world the social realm has become a powerful tool for business. But it’s a noisy and confronting marketplace, which has many people asking, “Where on earth do I start?” If you are in the business of selling your wares to other businesses (B2B) then it might be time to consider LinkedIn. With more than 500 million professionals signed on, LinkedIn’s content catapultian is colossal. The network is the number one channel for B2B marketers to distribute content and is rated as the top social network for lead generation.

However, if you are dipping your toe in the water, it can be a daunting concept and the thought of baring all on a social platform can be confronting for

How to create content that will cut through We are all on information overload these days and for this reason cutting through is more challenging than ever. The more engaged your audience is the more likely you are going to be able to convert them to doing business with you. On LinkedIn the goal is to position yourself as an expert in your field, possibly a thought leader and definitely as credible. There are different ways of telling this story. Here are a few:

Basic text posts: it feels almost old school but according to Search Engine Journal basic text posts are generating more likes, comments, and views than any other form of content on LinkedIn. This is probably because this way of posting is not really the norm anymore and doing what everyone else is doing is not going to make people sit up and notice.

Business EUMUNDI DENTIST A WA R D F I N A L I S T A well deserving Dr Sarah Rose of Eumundi Dental, was recently shortlisted for Sunshine Coast Business Women Network’s Young Business Woman of the Year. When asked what the accolade meant to her Sarah shared she was elated to be nominated as it told that her client’s appreciate the work that she’s doing for our hinterland community. Sarah expanded her dental practice last September and employed three more staff.

“To expand the dental surgery a SWOT analysis and financial projections were completed and I am constantly referring back to both of these to ensure I am addressing my weaknesses and that the business is growing to plan,” Sarah shared.

“During the build of the new premises we were able to go $60,000 under budget for fitout by managing the project internally and using reliable local tradespersons to complete the work,” Sarah explained.

She said her five year business plan involves further expansion and capital investment by hopefully purchasing another commercial property. “By achieving this we will be able to build a four chair surgery and employ another fulltime dentist or oral hygienist,” Sarah enthused. “This will also open up for specialists to visit the surgery to keep as much treatment in-house as possible and provide more essential

Underemployment is when we are working, but we need more hours of work to keep up with our cost of living expenses.

Currently our seasonal adjusted underemployment rate has stayed at 8.1%. This equates to over one million Australians who are underemployed. For your interest there are just over 12.5 million in the workforce. That translates to one in 11 people aren’t earning enough to make ends meet. This also means that many Australians are looking for more working

Sunshine Coast RDA in North Arm had blue skies and a cool breeze for the annual Open Day. The paddock carpark quickly filled with visitors keen for the action to commence. First it was the Parade of RDA horses. Some of our Saddle Club participants showed their confidence in providing the commentary of the RDA horses to the crowd.

Guy McLean performed the first of two performances of the day with his four horses in a liberty demonstration which impressed the crowds.

The second Light Horse Brigade: Woombye Troop, performed a drill, followed by gallops towards balloons which were burst using swords. Nathan Harvey, dual gold medallist at the Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi earlier this year, rode on his beautiful black stallion Dom and wowed the crowds with a freestyle dressage display to the music of Star Wars. The RDA Carriage Team demonstrated how

our wheelchair clients can access the carriage and learn to drive!

Children had plenty of activities too, with face painting, hay rides and pony rides on offer.

It was the most successful RDA Open Day ever with over 600 people in attendance.

EDCA’s next meeting in the Scout hall, Memorial Dr, on Mon 9 Sept will also be the AGM. All positions become vacant and the community is invited to attend & join this community group which manages the terraces market on Wednesdays.

Bron, Hayden, Bob & Margaret from Eumundi Rotary recently laid turf around the new slab that will receive a recycling pod later this month. Rotary will then hold info days to help the community sign up to CO EX and Envirobank.

The next Belli Community Hall Country Dance with Sunshine Swing Band will be held Sat 7 Sept, 7.30pm.

Sgt Ryan Hanlon of Eumundi Police has reported the offender responsible for a spate of break-ins around the hinterland recently, was caught last week hiding & camping on a local property.

After a foot chase and swim across a dam (unconfirmed) the man is now in custody.

New school bus stop for Doonan families

Thanks to a lot of patience and persistence, the daily school journey is about to get easier for a group of Doonan students following a successful campaign to install a new bus stop for the 5804 school bus service from Noosa to Peregian Springs.

It was around 18 months ago when Doonan resident Darren Cousins asked for help to get the existing bus stop on Wattlebird Pl relocated to Valley Dr and finally, Translink has given Buslink the green light to relocate the bus stop. This is a great outcome for those families and I am pleased to see Buslink and Translink taking on board community feedback and remaining responsive to local needs. A special thanks to Darren for championing this issue on behalf of local families.

Marquees prove popular Over the past few weeks, I’ve been dropping off new marquees to some of our local

clubs and schools. The Eumundi Dragons and Eumundi State School were two of the latest recipients. If you are a member of a not-for-profit group with a need for a marquee, let me know, as I hope to place another order in the new year.

Eumundi School of Rock There are only a few more sleeps until we celebrate what has developed into one of the Coast’s most favourite annual events, the Eumundi School of Rock. I am proud to be a sponsor of this year, which provides a valuable opportunity for some of our up and coming musicians from local schools to perform in an authentic rock concert. Under the guidance and mentorship of the highly awarded and incredibly talented Katie Noonan, these students will hit the stage on Saturday night in what is sure to be an aweinspiring concert. I wish all the young performers all the very best, and look forward to being part of such an amazing event.

In memory of former resident Bob Loudon’s love of Eumundi, his friends, family and local community groups, have donated a new seat at Dick Caplick Park, near the service station (aka Bob’s Servo) that he managed for 24 years. Bob’s stepdaughter Jenny Formosa said Bob was a one of Eumundi’s larger than life characters. “He would always be one of the first to put his hand in his pocket to help out any group in town who were fundraising for whatever cause,” she said.

Books REMEMBERING TONI MORRISON Judith Pattison, Doonan The recent death of Nobel prize winning American writer and academic, Toni Morrison, came as a shock to me and, of course, I’m not alone. She was such an important feature on the cultural and literary landscape that we couldn’t imagine her absence. It seems there are individuals that we expect to continue forever, and in a way they do.

While she leaves a void in her place - especially at a time when racism and social injustice threaten to overwhelm us - she’s also left a powerful legacy of ideas and words to sustain us. No one explained the devastation and impact of slavery in America and the world as well as she did through the power of those beautifully written yet terrible stories and images.

Although they were painful to read, Beloved and The Bluest Eye taught me more about the devasting and ongoing impacts of slavery on a people and a country than any other source.

“Slavery splits a person into a fragmented figure. The identity, consisting of painful memories and unspeakable past, denied and kept at bay, becomes a ’self that is no self.’

“To heal and humanize, one must constitute it in a language, reorganize the painful events and retell the painful memories.”

Also, “If you’re going to hold

someone down, you’re going to have to hold on by the other end of the chain. You are confined by your own repression.” So very appropriate in many places right now. Beloved, Jazz and Paradise form a trilogy telling the story of black slaves in America that is as true as written history. There is much more to say about Toni Morrison, and the analysis will go on, but she is her own best storyteller: Some more of her words...

“Word-work is sublime … because it is generative; it makes meaning that secures our difference, our human difference — the way in which we are like no other life.”

“I think all good art is political.

None of the best writing, the best thoughts have been anything other than that.”

M A R AT H O N R A C E FOR RUN CLUB At the recent Sunshine Coast Marathon 14 amazing locals, who had been training hard (and often in the dark) for the last two months to get race ready, ran from 2km to 10km races and joined thousands of other participants at Alexandra Headlands.

Many of the Eumundi Run Club members were completely new to the sport achieving their first 5km on the day of the event. The runners had to find time to train each week in their busy lives as parents, 12

business owners...as well as training on their own. Eumundi trainer Samantha Williams said, “The group found that having a running goal and training with

Sport E S S TA K E O N T H E M O U N TA I N This year Eumundi State School (ESS) was represented by four relay teams: two boy’s teams and two girl’s teams, that competed in the annual King of the Mountain (KOM) primary school relay event. Held at the base of Mount Cooroora in Pomona, teams were made up of four runners who each ran a lap of 700m around Stan Topper Park.

Competing in the event there were a total of 24 girl’s teams and 28 boy’s teams from all over the Sunshine Coast. The ESS athletes were

outstanding and competed with a great show of determination and sportsmanship in each of the races - they should all be very proud of themselves! Many thanks to each participant for all of the training and preparation leading up to race day, as well as parents for getting them there and cheering everyone on.

The standout result this year was in the girl’s division, where one of the Eumundi teams finished in first place winning convincingly by 25 seconds. This team was made up of Lexi S, Lucy O, Sophie J and Lily S. Our

other team of girls also finished very strongly, crossing the finish line in seventh place. Well done to Georgia B, Kiani B, Leila R and Eavan F. Our boys’ teams were also impressive, they finished seventh (Jimi L, Zach H, Harper W and Ben B) and eighth (Lui B, Rhys L, Willoughby S and Jack S) respectively. Congratulations to all of the dedicated Eumundi students who took part.

Lastly, a huge thank you again to the Original Eumundi Markets for sponsoring our four teams and supplying them each with a running shirt to make them

look the part during the race.

Thanks also to Kita L and Sue J for taking some great photos before, during and after the event. Thank you also to Rob L for helping secure team numbers to shirts as well as Libby W who collected entry fees, assisted in handing out team shirts, and making the last minute dash to purchase some additional safety pins to help get team numbers on shirts. Eumundi State Schoolers Milli and Lachlan recently represented Queensland at the Australian National Karate tournament in Launceston, Tasmania. They were part of a team of kids and adults who train at Sunshine Coast Martial Arts in Noosaville.

Individual kata under 10 years and fourth in the Individual Kumite eight-nine years. Milli has been training for two years and has a green belt. She came fourth in the Individual Kata under 11 years and also competed in the under 11 years Kumite.

Lachlan, who has been training for six years and is a blue belt, came fourth in the Team Kata and he came third in the

Milli shared, “Representing Queensland and competing at the Nationals was fun, I like competing and had trained

hard, so I was ready to do the best I could.“ “Going on the plane and being together with the rest of the team for four days was really good. We all cheered each other on, by the end of the day I had a very croaky voice,” she said.

Queensland’s final medal tally was; 13 Gold medals, 16 Silver medals, 32 Bronze medals.

Keeping a cow for milking Can your dream of owning a milking cow be turned into reality, or is it better to remain as a dream? The thought of a fresh glass of raw milk each morning can certainly be a big push to race out and buy a miking cow. Pasteurised milk we buy from the shop has lost most of its nutritional value and enzymes meaning it is more a source of fat than anything else. Unfortunately it is illegal to sell raw milk so the only way to have access to it is to own your own cow. Here are some facts to consider before taking that leap.

Firstly, you must legally be able to own livestock so this means being in the right rural zoning and having enough acreage (cows are herd animals and need the company of another cow). Secondly, cows, particularly when lactating, have specific dietary requirements to keep them healthy. Good pasture, minerals, extra protein sources and water are necessities. The third point is a major one that may sway your decision. A cow must give birth to a calf annually to keep producing milk (this also means access to a bull or artificial insemination).

Yes calves are cute, but consideration into when you will pull the calf off the mum and what you will do with the calves once they grow up, particularly if they are bulls, are very important considerations.

You can usually get six to 10 months of milk production from a single cow depending on your

practises. The other two to six months she must rest to get ready to give birth to her next calf and then feed the calf. Once the calf is born it remains on mum for approximately three months until weaned.

This is a commitment you must stick to each and every day.

Choosing a specific breed of cow can determine milk production. Certain breeds are renowned for milking such as Jerseys and Guernseys. Although other breeds can be milked, they may not be as productive.

B O TA N I C GARDENS P L A N T FA I R Now in its fifth year, the free Father’s Day Plant Fair at Noosa Botanic Gardens, Lake MacDonald, will be held on Sunday 1 September, 9am - 3pm.

Organised by Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens volunteers, the day has grown from seven stallholders in 2015, to this year’s 30 exhibitors and is expecting to attract over 3,000 visitors.

There will be diverse stallholders, plus Noosa Arts & Crafts Association will also be holding a range of $5 workshops. This year will include new exhibitors; Permaculture Noosa, Acres Nursery, Witjuti Grub Bushtucker Nursery, First Food Co. and Lost Gardens.

Meg Bastow, Year 4, ESS Ignite English Entering a world full of colour and beautiful smells, my eyes darted around this magnificent place. I spotted flowers that burst with brilliant colours. Trees lunged over me like a giant wave with leaves that danced in the breeze. Wandering along the path, my neck strained as I looked right, left and up, then down. Suddenly, I stopped as a sign blocked my way. Curious, I strolled closer to this sign to see what the words read. Could it tell me something about this sensational secret garden?

I was able to make out the words as vines curled around them making it difficult to see, Eumundi Sunken Garden. This garden had all of the colours of the rainbow, greens, blues, pinks and purples. Interested, intrigued and involved by all that surrounded me, my attention was drawn to a ruby red flower with emerald green leaves. Logs covered with brilliant green moss as soft as carpet lay on the ground.
