HINTERLAND MOMENTS
Last week’s fires in Peregian were close to home with most of us having friends and family evacuated from the area. Our local brigades; Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale, Belli Park and Tinbeerwah, all sent crews into the line of fire. This wasn’t a grass fire or house alight, but a storm of roaring flames and sparks that threatened whole communities and moved through bush with a veracious appetite. Without these volunteer crews there is no doubt more homes and lives would’ve been lost and who knows where the fire would’ve spread to. I’ve heard tell of our volunteer brigade members calmly lining David Low Way as a wall of fire bared down on them, with the order to not let the fire cross. The fire didn’t pass and did not breach the 4562 region. Our volunteer brigades truly are heroes who fought for their neighbouring communities and kept us safe. The real take away from the Peregian fire is in these current drought conditions, it can happen anywhere – take hold fast – and this is just the start of the fire season! If you don’t have a fire plan – make one. Talk to your kids about it so if it happens everyone stays calm and knows what to do.

However, when making decisions about what you agree to or download, it may be worth considering what your data may be used for now or in the future before you push the button.

Community NEW EUMUNDI RECYCLING POD Eumundi recycling has found a new drop-off spot in the heart of town at 20-56 Napier Rd, Eumundi. Open 24/7, the container takes accepted bottles, cans and certain paper drink cups for recycling. It has orange recycle bags on each side. People take these and fill them with their recyclables. Each bag takes approx 50 items. Plastic lids must be removed to get refunds. People then join by registering with CO EX. They are then given a C1 number which is their rego/ID. They then sign up to Envirobank that they are placing recyclables in an Envirobank POD. This becomes an App on their phone. At the POD site they
open their Envirobank App and scan the barcode on the bag they are depositing. Within a few days the value of their bag is deposited into their account. The other option is people attach a Rotary tag available at the POD. These funds then go to Rotary Eumundi to use on projects in the area. Rotary organiser Bron Innes said, “It sounds complicated - and it is - until people learn and adapt! I liken it to internet banking - everyone hated it to start but now it is a very easy fact of life.” “It’s been a long haul but I really feel it is such an asset to the town,” she enthused.
EUMUNDI AG SHOW LIVES TO SEE A N O T H E R Y E A R Wendy Domin, Eumundi The Eumundi Agricultural Show will be held on Saturday 28 September due to some fantastic volunteers who have stepped up to make sure that it goes ahead. Unfortunately the committee for the grounds has a very small number of people that run the show every year and this year two of our five committee were unable to commit to running the show. When the news got out some of the wonderful people who normally are participants of the Show have stepped up and are going to make sure it is on this year. Every year the riders need their points from as many of the country shows as they can to enable them to compete at the Royal Show and if our small shows are unable to be run then the opportunity to gain the points becomes very difficult.

As I write this, our dedicated and hard-working firies and other emergency services have been working around the clock to contain bushfires that threatened communities to the south-east of Eumundi, including Peregian Springs, Peregian Breeze, Peregian Beach, and Weyba Downs. What started out as a grass fire very quickly escalated into an emergency situation that destroyed one home, damaged property and devastated hectares of bushland and wildlife habitats, not to mention the heavy toll on native wildlife, and the emotional trauma to those involved.
As we continue to count the costs in the days and weeks to come, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of all of the emergency services who worked tirelessly to control the fire and ensure the safety of residents. If it wasn’t for their quick and coordinated efforts when the fire broke out, the damage and destruction, and the impact on our local communities, would have been much worse. We owe them all a huge debt of gratitude. From the firies, police and other emergency service personnel on the front line, to the countless volunteers who helped out at the local
BOOMERANG BAGS EUMUNDI Eumundi Boomerang Bags is a grass roots, community driven movement formed in 2017 by six locals that aimed to eradicate plastic bag usage in our community. At bi-monthly sewing bees volunteers of all ages and all walks of life from across our region, would get together in the CWA hall to make re-useable bags using donated recycled materials from the community. These fabric bags were then given to locals and shops and, on occasion, sold at the markets to buy supplies like cotton, op-shop ties (biscuits) and service machines.

Books BOOKER IS BACK The Booker’s back! The 2019 shortlist has been decided and the winner will be announced on 14 October. Once, this would have been an obscure announcement only of interest to a few, and usually only when the winner was announced, but there seems to be plenty of interest for this one. Perhaps it’s the return of Atwood and Rushdie? In case there are readers who haven’t heard of it, I’m talking about the Booker Prize for Fiction (formerly known as the Booker–McConnell Prize (1969–2001) and then the Man Booker Prize (2002–2019). It is, “widely recognised as the supreme literary award of the year, open to writers of any nationality for the best original novel written in the English language and published in the United Kingdom.” The six novels shortlisted are: • The Testaments by Margaret Atwood, which is a sort of sequel to The Handmaids Tale; • Girl Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo; • An Orchestra of Minorities by Chigozie Obioma; • 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World by Elif Shafak; • Ducks, Newburyport by Lucy Ellmann • Quichotte by Salman Rushdie. Both Rushdie and Atwood are previous winners; the others -
NEW BOOK CLUB We are quite a new book club based in Eumundi and would like our community to know about us. We started back in June but unfortunately the person who was instrumental in creating the group returned to Victoria soon after, so, we are still in our infancy and want to keep it going. We need readers! Why a Book Club you may ask? A book club appeals to a variety of people from all walks of life in our community. Books also give us the opportunity of going to another place, situation or a learning venue without leaving the comfort of our own home. A book club allows us to get together not only to discuss books but to make new likeminded friends and at the same

In an age when the bulk of texts are digital and linked to social media and best sellers are non-fiction, mysteries, and popular culture: do the Booker and literary prizes like it matter? Some critics suggest that they are the last bastions against the assault on the novel. Writer and literary critic Will Self said, “Literary fiction used to be central to the culture. No more: in the digital age, not only is the physical book in decline, but the very idea of ‘difficult’ reading is being challenged. The future of the serious novel is as a specialised interest.” If all this sounds a bit snobby - ignore it! You can have a perfectly good literary life without the Booker and - a warning - once you get interested, you’re hooked. While the Booker could be seen as just a grand commercial exercise on one level, on another, it provides a fascinating insight into the history and culture of modern literature: writers and critics, played out in an international setting full of politics, intrigue and skulduggery. Not unlike international cricket or tennis! If you’re interested, I recommend the Booker Wikipedia entry which includes its full history including all the winners and countries of origin.
Margaret Willis, Eumundi time encourages us to open up to new ideas. Personally, reading has always been a major part of my life, making sure I spend some time each day with my nose in a book. I live in the local Eumundi area with my adult family, my spare time is taken up doing many and varied projects for the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Services. Heritage JOAN’S HOUSE

In Memory of Joan Keehn, born in Sunny Brae Hospital (now the Eumundi Showgrounds) on 16 March 1928. Joan lived in number 65 Memorial Dr, for many years, where she peacefully passed away on 30 July this year, aged 91. Many Eumundi residents will remember Joan sitting up on her enclosed veranda watching the world go by or walking into town to do some shopping - often stopping for a rest in later years and always ready for a chat.
to get her out of the house for a few days and painted the inside of the house, but other than that sprucing up, little of the house has changed over the years. Many of Eumundi’s early houses still remain today, some have changed little like number 65, some have been remodelled, added onto and modernised.
Joan Lait was 19 when she married Irwin (known as Ike) Keehn in 1947. They bought the Memorial Dr house in 1952. They then brought up five children there, with Ike unfortunately dying in 1975, leaving Joan and her youngest son Noel, at the time 11, still living in the house. In 2019 the extended family is now 17 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. This fairly simple Queenslander style house next to the Eumundi School of Arts hall and the one next door to it at number 67 (now Robinson’s Architects), were built by the same builder, somewhere between 1910 and 1920. Joan’s husband Ike carted logs in his truck for Harry Hume in his early work life, then developed his own business, and in later life worked for the railways. Joan, besides the very busy job of child raising also did the cleaning of the School of Arts hall for many years and was heavily involved in the Share and Care group that met at the CWA hall. She was also involved in Meals on Wheels until about the age of 80. For her 80th birthday her beloved family managed

Sport D R A G O N S C E L E B R AT E S E A S O N E N D September sees the Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union Club wrap up their tenth very successful, terrific season. This year the club experienced a steady growth in player numbers and was able to nominate four teams in the Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby Union competition. In 2020 the club fully expects to nominate at least five teams; U6’s, U7’s, U8’s, U9/10’s and U11’s. At their recent AGM the members re-elected the following executives; President Doug Toms , Vice President Will Vine , Secretary Andrew Hillhouse and Treasurer Luke Youd.

Health B U R N T R E AT M E N T With summer just around the corner and the bushfire crisis still unfolding, it is timely to discuss the different types of burns that can occur and how to treat and manage this type of wound if you or someone else is unfortunate enough to be burnt. Burns can be caused by not only flames but also ultraviolet (UV) radiation, hot liquids, electricity, lightning and certain chemicals. All burns require immediate first aid treatment.
T hree Levels of Burns • Superficial – these burns cause damage to the first or top layer of skin only. The burn site will be red and painful. • Partial thickness – these burns cause damage to the first and second skin layers. The burn site will be red, peeling, blistered and swelling with clear or yellow-coloured fluid leaking from the skin. The burn site is very painful. • Full thickness – involves damage to both the first and

Very deep burns may damage the underlying muscle or bone. The nerve endings are generally destroyed and so there is little or no pain at the site of the full-thickness burn. • However, surrounding partial thickness burns will be very painful. Immediate first aid for burns is important and aims to stop the burning process and cool the burn wound. Firstly: • Remove the person from danger and further injury. • Hold the burn under cold running water for 20 minutes. Cold water has been shown to reduce the area and depth of a burn. It should be applied as soon as possible as the benefits reduce if cold treatment is delayed beyond 30 minutes. Immersion in cold water or wet towels can be used if cold running water is not available.

• Keep the unburnt areas of the body dry and warm to avoid hypothermia, particularly important if a large area is burnt.

Hydrogels that contain antibacterial ingredients such as melaleuca or honey have an added advantage of preventing infection.
• Chemicals, such as acids and alkalis, must be washed off with running water for at least 20 minutes but take care not to splash the chemicals onto unaffected skin or other people. A cool shower is ideal. Continue cooling for 1-2 hours. It is important to note what has caused the burn as hospital or emergency staff will require this information. • Dial triple “000” for any burn over 10% of the total body surface for adults or 5% of the body surface of children. After first aid has been administered, wound management of the burn may be required. A burn that is smaller than 3cm in diameter and has not blistered can be dressed with a moist protective dressing. PLIGHT OF THE VERRIERDALE KANGAROOS Ed Boyd, Verrierdale It’s Spring again and with that comes all the exciting activities of our local flora and fauna that begin the rebirth of the next generation. In Verrierdale it also means the local kangaroo population gets active as they move across their territory. Sadly, this means images like seen in these photos are an unwelcome sight for many locals. Craig Daly lives near a busy part of Verrierdale Rd that is well used by cars - and kangaroos! It is an area where the roos commonly cross from one section of their territory to another. It is distressing for Craig to find another kangaroo carcass outside his house at the start of the day. Our plea is for users of the road to be very aware of the ‘other’ road users and take care when travelling through the area – especially at dusk and dawn this spring. He really hopes he doesn’t have to remove any more of his dead ‘friends’ when he heads off to work.
I raced down the back stairs into my garden. I screeched to a stop so quickly I almost tripped over my own feet. It was enormous! It stretched from tree to tree. Tiny little pieces of silk-like strands bound together by sticky slime. Millions of tiny little threads made intricate patterns. The dew from the evening rain rested upon the patterns created by this delicate web. The droplets were glistening diamonds decorating the web. The sunlight, which was behind the web, sent waves of glowing rays that made the web sparkle even more. Eight enormous legs unfurled across the stunning web, distracting me from nature’s diamond necklace. I would have run into this creature and its web, if I had not halted. Many black eyes were
staring at me cunningly, as if the spider was preparing to pounce. However, the beauty of what this spider had created made me feel safe and not threatened. Cont’d on pg 18

As we are all aware fire season is now well and truly upon us. In the last few weeks we have seen fires in Noosa, North Arm, Belli and Eerwah, and also big destructive fires in the Gold Coast and Ispwich areas. Even Brisbane has not remained unscathed as they have had multiple fires in the previous weeks alone. Our Brigade has sent members on strike teams to Kingaroy, Bundaberg and the Gold Coast in the last week and will be sending crews off as the season dictates. So looking at this and into the coming summer you can see that we will be in for a busy fire season. The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted that is will be a long, dry hot summer with severe to extreme fire conditions. How can you be prepared so as we do not have to turn up at your place. Create your own fire breaks around your boundaries, your house and infrastructure. Clean your gutters. Service any firefighting gear you already have such as pumps and hoses.

The recent fires saw an enormous response from local community fire brigades, regular fire fighters and amazing amount of support people. It was amazing to see the rapid turn out. I am proud to say that the Verrierdale Rural Fire Brigade also played its part in defending people’s homes and other assets. All three vehicles turned out and were some of the first on scene. The initial call said that six homes were under threat. The situation deteriorated so very quickly and the rest is, as they say ... history. Make sure they work now before you need them. Make sure you can get a fire truck near your house. Create your own bushfire preparedness plan. This includes knowing what essentials are necessary to take in case of emergency evacuations, and where you plan to go. Plan now, so that you are prepared and know what to do when needed.

We had eight members out for most of the night and all were prepared to back up the next day and go out again. Of the eight, two were new to the brigade and were seeing their first big wild fire. Thursday night we had six members out patrolling the fire area making sure there we no flare ups. Not the most exciting fire work, but quite important. Again, three new members out helping out.

Silently, I backed away, so I would not frighten it, then I turned, and sprinted. Up the stairs, through the lounge, down the hall until I reached my room and my camera so I could capture the beauty of the spider and its web. I did not want to miss taking a photo of this being and its creation. I rushed back to the web only to find the spider was gone! The culprit was standing there. I ran towards him and retrieved the stick from his hands, but the damage had been done. The spider had fled and the amazing web destroyed, however, I still have the image in my mind.
This year is predicted to be one of the worst fire seasons that we will experience, so please be careful doing any work that could cause fire. The picture shows what can happen when slashing a paddock, unfortunately for this property owner, a new tractor is now required.
Firefighters Fay Wiggins, Andrew Woitowitz, Craig Daly, Jonno McLaughlin (newbie), Ned Nolan (newbie), Andy Harler (newbie), and Sunny James who came up from Caloundra. Also, now might be a good time to come and say hello at a training day. We are always looking for new members. All of us are time poor, and the more people we have the easier it becomes to fight fires. Come down and say g’day, we train every fourth Saturday. Remember, as well, to get a permit for a fire. It’s easy to do, just contact the fire warden and he will help get it done. All I ask is that you contact him on the Fire Warden number 0468 424 298, not his personal number, and leave a message.
We have been spending the last few months preparing for the fire season and training new volunteers, we are always looking for more volunteers, so if interested, contact our First Officer Steve Lake, on the number below. What will help us all, is for your property to be prepared for the bushfire season.
