This issue was put to bed to the resounding sounds of rumbling sky and rain on the iron roof. It feels good to have rain – and the tanks have finally had a little reprieve.

It’s about this time every year that I start gardening in earnest again with hopes and dreams of bountiful crops of herbs, fruit and veggies enough to sustain the family throughout summer.

But water is still such a precious commodity and my past success has been patchy at best. But this year…!

Spring is when we get things done in the hinterland. We have energy to attack to-do lists during these beautiful, warm spring days – before we return to our sweltering summers.

This issue was made with the added challenge of the NBN going down across Eumundi and Cooroy without warning. Great when over 50% of the hinterland population work from home! We got there in the end though – as we always do. Thanks for your patience advertisers and contributors.

Principal seller and owner of real estate agencies in Dayboro and Eumundi, Vicki Pain was recently awarded number 10 principal for the Rural Network across the Australian Ray White network.

Jenny Brice, Executive Coach, Eumundi There are absolutely fabulous advantages of working from home as many of us know. If the data is correct about 52% of us living in our postcode may do just that. The average is about 33% of people work remotely, at least some part of the week.

However recent research shows that two thirds of employees are becoming disengaged when they are not physically in the workplace. This is because the relationships are often not as strong, and employees are more likely to change jobs and only do what they have to. (This may be different if you are running your own business and of course it is not all people).

The estate agent first began in Garnet St, Cooroy with a team of five staff in 1989, when it was just a sleepy town with a median house price of $70,000. Now Cooroy’s median house price has skyrocketed to $543,000 – that’s an almost eight-fold increase.

Some tech companies, like Apple, have become so concerned that working from home is stifling creativity they are encouraging “back to office days” so people connect with each other and generate ideas. Another trend employers are noticing is that people working from home, can become isolated and lonely.

Some employers are teaching remote employees how to prevent such issues from happening and helping them re-connect. Great tips on the web about this topic.

I am sure as mental health week approaches; many of us are aware that we have an epidemic of loneliness in Australia, with 20% of people saying they experience loneliness some time during each week. Interestingly there is some research looking into what impact the loss of traditional face to face meeting places like workplaces, schools and churches are impacting on our sense of belonging and community.

Working from home is on an upward trend, however like anything we need to relish the upsides and manage the downsides.

Community RECRUIT DRIVE FOR LOCAL BRIGADES To connect communities with their volunteer rural fire brigades, the QFES hosted an open day at brigade sheds across the State. At the Eumundi open day at the Napier Rd shed, First Officer Bob Ward said, “A day like this is great for getting new recruits along who may have been thinking about signing up – or checking out what’s involved.”

In the aftermath of the Peregian Beach Fire earlier this September, the Eumundi Brigade has had over 10 new recruits signing up. First

Officer Matt Tinney at the Verrierdale Brigade has also reported a swell in volunteer numbers with 12 new locals signing up for training.

Our hinterland region relies on volunteer firefighters to respond first in an emergency. But volunteers are under no obligation to turn up.

They do it out of a sense of duty and community service. This is why it’s important for a brigade to have the more volunteers the better.

CONTRIBUTING TO THE WELLNESS OF OTHERS Sophie Jansen, Year 6, ESS Ignite English Working with a fantastic multidisciplinary team and having the opportunity to meet some really interesting patients is something Libby Whyatt adores about her job.

Libby is a senior physiotherapist in a pelvic health clinic at the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Libby helps with rehabilitation of patients who have recently given birth and patients who have had pelvic surgery or suffering from cancer.

Getting to meet many friendly people and helping them on the road to recovery is a very rewarding part of Libby’s job, however, Libby is also presented with many challenges. Facing patients who have been diagnosed with cancer and some who have been given treatments that have resulted in severe side effects are some of these challenges.

Libby grew up in a small country town called Childers, just a few hours drive from Bundaberg. In high school she took on many jobs around the community including; picking mangoes and avocados, working at the local service centre, tourist information centre and art gallery - all this could even

happen in a single weekend.

Libby always knew she wanted to pursue a profession that she could help contribute to the wellness of others, becoming a physiotherapist offered that for her.

Following high school, Libby studied physiotherapy at the University of Queensland and was 21 when she had graduated as a qualified physiotherapist.

Libby saw her first patient as a fully qualified physiotherapist on a medical ward at Townsville hospital. This patient was referred by Arron, the junior doctor on the ward, and later to be Libby’s husband.

Libby and Arron actually worked in many different hospitals as they travelled around the world.

They spent five months in South America and many months in Europe, the United Kingdom and Asia. Travelling seems to be something the Whyatt family loves as later, Libby, Arron and

their three children, Tom, Indigo and Harper, trekked around Australia for over a year and a half.

Before Libby and Arron set off on their journey around the world, in 2000, they worked in Nambour hospital and they always speculated that Eumundi would be a beautiful outside life style and a fantastic place to bring up their family.

Libby enjoys early morning walks and beach swims all year round with her friends and family. Libby is also a keen potter and book club member.

As much as Libby loves to do these activities her most treasured thing to do is to head off down a dirt road with her family and go camping.

Community S T E I N E R F E S T I VA L C E L E B R AT E S Hundreds of families flocked to Noosa Pengari Steiner School (NPSS) on Sunday to enjoy a wonderful and enriching day at the annual children’s festival. Set on 16 hectares in Doonan, this bright and sun filled Hinterland setting provided the perfect back drop for this vibrant, grass roots festival with an estimated 3000 festival goers attending the event.

The school also celebrated the 100 year anniversary of Waldorf education globally and embraced the international Steiner theme of Bees and Trees - which is close to the heart of NPSS. The students have been developing a living bee ecosystem over the last three years and there are now

20 European honeybee hives located around the school. The students participate in the bee husbandry required to naturally look after bees and in return sell their honey in their own micro business called Pengari Honey at the school shop.

The school’s much publicised sustainability efforts have also paid off, with waste reduction to almost zero due to the carefully positioned recycling and composting bins resulting in very little waste headed for landfill. There were even free filtered water refill stations for those that brought their own bottle!

Arts N AT I O N A L H I G H S C H O O L E X H I B I T I O N Since 1990, The National Arts Exhibition has given high achieving art students the opportunity to exhibit their artwork in professional galleries. The top year 12 student’s from across the State are selected and submitted by their art teachers to represent their schools at a national level.

Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre (BFAS) is currently exhibiting the top art students’ works from the North Coast region, stretching from Pine River to Hervey Bay, with five of the works receiving excellence awards.

Gallery coordinators Mandy McQuire and Alicia Sharples spent over nine hours hanging the extensive exhibition which features a diverse selection of creative mediums including; painting, photography, printing, sculpture, ceramics, costume design, drawing, graphic design, installation, digital media and electronic imaging. “The works show high technical skills with numerous students choosing to use a combination of traditional techniques layered with new media and technology. Its

exciting work and a glimpse into the creative minds of our next generation,” Alicia enthused.

Alicia explained the exhibition was offered to BFAS from University of Sunshine Coast Gallery. “They were unable to house it this year due to current renovations and we were so pleased to have the opportunity to hold the exhibition in our three large gallery spaces - as a result a few things were different for the regional exhibition,” she said.

Local senior art teacher Mandy McQuire at Noosa District State High School submitted a number of her high achieving student’s work. She explained the artworks are curriculum driven but this doesn’t detract from the exhibition. “The art works exhibited are incredibly diverse,

thought-provoking, and indeed, provide insight into the desires, concerns and visions that our young community members consider important if not essential to their lives now and in the future,” Mandy shared.

“Usually not all the work nominated can be shown, but this year due to the size of BFAC, we were able to show every student’s work,” Alicia enthused.

The award recipients will now feature as part of the 2020 central exhibition. “The central exhibition is the pinnacle of the program where excellence awarded artworks

KEEPING OF MEMORIES The need to collect things – which sometimes manifests into an obsession with collecting and containing – is something many can relate to. Doonan artist Penny McIntyre explores this compulsion of keepsakes in Remnants Contained - her first solo exhibition, running until Saturday 19 October in Wan’din’in arts space. “This is an exhibition for everyone, if you wish to be challenged, amused or tempted, by a wide variety of jewellery, critters in cages and remnants contained,” Penny shared. discovereumundi.com/arts-space/ calendar

Arts T I M E L E S S P L AY F O R E U M U N D I Eumundi director Analiese Long is bringing her production of the play I and You, written by Lauren Gunderson, to Eumundi this October. She spoke to the Green about her passion for theatre and what attracted her to bringing this play to life.

Why did this play resonate with you?

Playwright Lauren Gunderson is a badass! She was the most produced playwright in America in 2018. She writes fierce, strong characters - especially women.

Caroline, in I and You, played by Eumundi ex-pat actor Ayla Long, is a prickly teenager. But don’t think whining teen, Caroline is a complex young woman who has thoughts and feelings, and sass and sarcasm and she just happens to be very, very ill. In fact, she is waiting for a liver transplant that may or may not arrive before it’s too late (Australia’s transplant success rates are amongst the best but we have one of the lowest organ donation rates in the developed world, so this play carries a lot of potential positive social impacts).

At the time of the play she is too sick to go to school - and she’s a senior. You can imagine how cut off she feels from the world. Anthony, played by Abdul Salman, barges into her room with fries and a homework project that seems so tame at the start- a dissection of Walt Whitman’s use of pronouns in his masterpiece, Leaves of Grass, but it quickly delivers more than expected. Anthony is no shrinking violet either.

Gunderson writes truth into these characters - they jump off her script and need to be heard!

Anthony is complex. He likes jazz and basketball and has his share of girl problems. But completing the project together unites them in a way that you wouldn’t expect. Please come and see the play. I want to share it with everyone!

Who will this play appeal to?

Audiences 13 plus are recommended. But it is a play that will get you talking so bring everyone. Come and see it on your own and you will want to call someone and tell them about it! I can’t spoil the ending but it is David Williamsonesque in its dissection through dialogue and the final twist would make Agatha Christie pay attention!

Why is theatre still worth going to?

I recently saw The Cold Record, produced by Tex Mechs for The Horizon Festival. It was an intimate piece starring one man. The premise and the story drew every single audience member in and held us until it was done. But it didn’t stop resonating when we walked away. In fact, many didn’t walk away as the group had found that connection with each other and wanted to keep it singing.

Theatre is always different for everyone, but there is something about experiencing a story live, in the presence of others, that will move you: it’s the way to save the world. Theatre is consistently relevant because it feeds off the group energy.

I was in the audience for Qld Theatre’s Fangirls last week and one side of the audience erupted into fangirls! Just for that moment. They didn’t all know each other, but the

It is such a hum to experience theatre like that. That is why I make theatre. I want to peel back and show the everyday and allow the warmth of combined experience to resonate with a group of strangers and bind them together.

Who are the actors?

Ayla Long, Eumundi local, now Brisbane based actor, studying full time at QUT. Ayla is working on a few short films and was Assistant Director of Fantastic Mr Fox, recently staged by Little Seed Theatre Company.

STUDENTS PERFORM GOTHIC CLASSIC Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein was performed recently by year 9 students at Noosa Pengari Steiner School (NPSS) in Doonan, as part of their Gothic Literature studies with their teacher Nicholas Stagg who directed the play. The play, written by Shelley when she was 19, about a monster outcast by a cruel world, resonated with the students.

Reilly Huff gave his all as the tormented Creature, with Jazmin Joseph (Elizabeth), Kane Doherty (Dr Frankenstein), Benjamin Stewart (Delacey) supporting with passion and conviction.

Singers Daniella Conroy-Doust, Jaia Crowly, Jamie Short, Summer Ryan and Scarlet Glennie also showcased their talents throughout the performance under the tutelage of Jeunae Rogers. A beautifully moving dance, choreographed by Leonie Deavin, was performed by a gifted Louise Enkleman.

Eumundi School of Arts is waiting for a revival. It needs some permanent lighting and possibly a sound system before touring theatre productions will add Eumundi to their schedule.

But they are ready! Please show your support of local theatre. I received a grant from RADF to produce and direct this play, I included the Eumundi School of Arts specifically in my application as it is such a great venue that is, sadly, underutilised.

Andrea Kirwin is an Australian-Fijian Artist/Producer based on the Sunshine Coast, Australia. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Andrea perform a few times and was intrigued to learn more about her music. Andrea captivates her audience with her warm stage presence and soulful sound, weaving melodies together beautifully with such love and passion, and her style forms an earthy blend of roots/reggae/funk and soul What is your earliest memory of music, and what influences have helped to make music such an important part of your life?

Music and singing was a part of my life from a very early age.

I grew up in Townsville and my Fijian mum used to sing to me and taught me how to sing when I was very little, and I used to make up songs to sing to the animals and remember making up little songs to sing to the little fish on Magnetic Island when we went there on holidays at Picnic bay.

How long have you been creating your own music, and how did you start out your music career?

I was 21 years old studying law in Canberra when I went to my first live concert at ANU Bar in 2006 and saw Clare Bowditch and the feeding set play. That night after

the show I asked Clare questions about how old she was when she started pursuing music and I started writing original songs that night when I got back to the dorm. I was gifted a guitar for my 21st birthday from a good friend and not long after that I met George Bishop busking one day and we ended up forming the Andi and George band. I went solo after the band broke up on stage at the Woodford Folk Festival on 1 January 2009.

I shaved my head and moved to Tathra, South Coast NSW. At that time I worked lots of different jobs but I didn’t release my first album until 2013 after moving to the Sunshine Coast. I then released two more albums under my own label Peace Run Records and am currently saving for my fourth release.

Can you give us an idea of your journey as a musician so far?

My musical journey has been an

unfolding path that has led me to many places and given me so many great experiences, connections and friendships. To be a musician is a way of life.

It’s playing at people’s weddings, funerals, and everything in between.

It’s being a bridge between cultures, generations and giving of yourself and your art to your community. I am very grateful to be a part of this community here on the Sunshine Coast and I love living and performing here regularly.

Thinking back on your career so far, is there a particular moment or performance that stands out as a favourite memory?

Any time that I lose myself in the music is a highlight for me. I’ve been honoured to support some great international Artists and

played some big Festivals but it is often the intimate gigs that are my favourite. I recently took part in the Sunny Coast Muso Woodstock 50th Anniversary fundraiser in Cooran in August.

They raised $3,300 for my Fijian Family to help raise my cousin Seini’s (who passed away from Domestic Violence) 2 young children. I was so grateful for the music community here on the Coast.

The amount is determined by whether you have a slow or fast metabolism. Metabolism is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. Spinach stir fry

This is a recipe I have used and developed over 40 years. It is a great way to get spinach, and all its health benefits, into the family diet. If you know the basics, then you can take out the bacon and add mushrooms. If served with pasta go heavy on the fetta to make a creamy sauce, but if you serve it with rice go light on the fetta or substitute parmesan cheese in the bowl. I also use pine nuts or macadamia nuts to sprinkle on top. I describe how to sweat the baby spinach, but I also use a whole bunch of English spinach when plentiful. This variety needs to be steamed first and put in at the end, but before the cheese.

Serves 4.

Ingredients

Method

• 2 large bowls of baby spinach (or 2 bags from the salad section)

1. Chop onion, bacon and garlic in roughly same sized pieces.

• 3 small – medium red onions.

2. Heat oil in large fry pan or wok with a lid.

• 1 - 3 garlic cloves • 1 tblsp olive oil • 6 short bacon rashers • ½ pot of fetta. I prefer the goat’s fetta, but any silky fetta is fine. The amount can vary with the richness or creaminess desired.

Remember fetta is really salty and so is the bacon.

• ¼ cup of water to steam the leaves.

3. Add onions and brown.

4. When onions are starting to brown and become transparent, add the bacon and toss them around together.

5. Add garlic and toss until onions brown.

7. Wait until the leaves are soft but still a vibrant green and toss till ingredients are evenly distributed.

8. Turn off heat and dollop fetta on top to heat - but not completely melt.

9. Put lid on while serving the rice or pasta.

10. The mixture keeps well and can be reheated as a side dish at another meal.

6. Put in the water and quickly top the mixture with the leaves and place the lid on.

This Global Climate Strike was also held in around 150 countries worldwide.

Now I don’t want to get into a climate change argument with anybody but come on we do have to agree that there are better alternatives to energy than burning fossil fuels! Clean energy like the sun, wind and

water. That’s what we could be using instead of digging up ancient coal and oil.

The Global Climate Strike has been organised by students and young people all over the planet to show that they want a future for themselves and future generations. They are imploring to adults over the world to join with them to stand together and let politicians know that they want: “no new coal, oil or gas projects; 100% renewable energy generation and exports by 2030: and funding for a just transition and job creation for all fossil fuel industry workers

and communities.” (Source ABC News).

Around 3000 people gathered at Cotton Tree for the march and it was a great vibe with people of all ages. We are very lucky to be living here on the Sunshine Coast with all this beautiful sunshine and our proactive Sunshine Coast and Noosa Councils. The Sunshine Coast Council’s vision is to become, “Australia’s most sustainable region: Healthy.

Smart. Creative.” and the fact that the new Solar Farm is “making us the first local government in Australia to

offset 100% of our electricity consumption across all our facilities and operations.”* Noosa Council too professes to be committed to the environment and sustainable.

Giselle Hollick, Year 4, ESS Ignite English Bang! Bang! Bang! The hammer struck the pegs that were put into the ground to support the frame of my shelter for the night.

Now was the time to secure the cover to the frame. Struggling to get it over the top, this was not as easy as I first thought it would be. Finally! I achieved my goal and the shelter stood tall in my backyard – the setting up was now done!

I watched the sun fall and the moon rise. It reached time to go to bed. I excitedly completed my final preparations for my backyard adventure. Crawling into my sleeping bag I realised that my feet were about to freeze, this is one aspect of my preparation I neglected. Running back inside, I grabbed some leggings and socks. Venturing back to the tent, I was relieved that my feet were saved from the cold. I struggled back into my sleeping bag, ready to go to sleep. I was starting to drift off to sleep, relaxed by the silence of the night, however, this was not to last.

The quietness of the night was disturbed by a thumping against the tent. My heart started to pound, I didn’t want to look outside

to discover the source of the sound. I bravely got up and peered out the tent to discover the maker of the noise - a cane toad!

Disgusting! Thankfully it jumped away without any assistance from me. I glanced up to notice the stars sparkling in the black night sky. Cont’d on pg 18

My latest songs that I am writing for my 4th album are more vulnerable than every before.

Music has saved my life in the past and has helped me through somes dark times. I am taking my time in putting together my next album and also working with a producer from LA for the first time, which I’m looking forward to! The meaning and message behind all of my music is one of authenticity, belonging and connection.

I will never forget that gig and the energy of everyone in the room who came together to support my family.

Who are your favourite musicians and who inspires or influences your musical style?

I look up to Tracy Chapman, Rodriguez, Lior, Katie Noonan, Kate Ceberano and Clare Bowditch. I’ve always admired their music, and attitude to having a career in the Music Industry. My style is ever changing but my influences would be John Mayer, Eric Clapton and Bebel Gilberto.
