Tourism Noosa’s latest research

T

ourism Noosa uses latest visitor statistics to inform their marketing plans throughout the year. Figures for the year ending March 2012 indicate the region held up despite continuing global economic uncertainty.

Main points include: the region had just under 1.8 million visitors in the year, including domestic and international overnight visitors

and day trippers – a decrease of 4.8 per cent; domestic overnight visitors were up 7.7 per cent; visitor-nights up 21.4 per cent; domestic overnight – spending was up 4.2 per cent while international fell 10.1 per cent; visiting friends and relatives market is trending up and a preference for holidaying in Noosa is increasing – particularly people from Sydney.

In his recently published book, “The Art of Selling: Learning from the Masters about the Business of Life”, Philip Delves Broughton concludes that good salespeople are born not made; even the best have to work hard before they can expect any kind of reward. He describes successful salespeople as having three key personality traits; optimism – being able to start each day knowing more people will say no to you than yes; tenacity – to endure the negatives over a long period of time; resilience – the ability to bounce back from failure. So what to do if you’re feeling like more of a “made” rather than “born” salesperson? Here are some tips from the best in the business: ”For me the only silver bullet, that will guarantee a successful salescareer, is caring. his week we cover a few interesting snippets of news that have come out recently about Apple products. One which may impact on many people is the “discussion” around the new iPhone 5 and the size of its cable port. The current port is a 30 pin design and the new one looks like it might be a 19 pin design (much smaller). The issue with this is that an iPhone 5 will not fit in any of the millions of peripherals for the current ipods, ipads and iphones such as docking stations, music players, car kits and so on.

So far there has been no word of an adapter between old and new.

probably be many devices in which an adapter wouldn’t allow your phone to fit properly.

Other changes to Apple’s range include: the removal of Google Maps and YouTube: Apple is increasingly distancing itself from Google replacing it with their own products. Removing Google Maps has been the largest upset as it is a very good product; Apple will need to have really done its work to ensure its (alternative) offering is as good. Will Apple be upsetting a lot of people? Or will Apple lovers continue their devotion.

Councillor Rogerson update

C

ouncil started work on improvements to the public amenities at 39 Memorial Dr but wayward tree roots caused a delay due to blocked sewer pipes.

This meant that extra drainage work needed to be undertaken before we could get on with the job of making the toilets safe and accessible. Closure of the amenities is frustrating for the community and temporary toilets have been made available to minimise disruption. I have been working with the project manager to ensure that the work is completed as a matter of high priority.

I understand there is property at the top end of town in a dilapidated state that continues to be of concern for locals. I can confirm that Council is working to resolve the issue and we are looking for a positive outcome to improve not only the safety but also the aesthetics of the area.

It’s the time of year for the region’s natural wildflowers to display their beauty and a number of guided walks have been

organised across the Sunshine Coast as part of the Spring Wildflower Festival. Bookings are essential for the guided walks and are now open: www.community. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/events.

his week we digress a little from law enforcement matters to highlight the incredible personal achievement of one of your local officers in a recent extreme sports event.

Senior Constable Blair Doran competed in the North Face 100 ultra marathon (running) event held this year in the Blue Mountains of NSW on 19 May. This annual event is very prestigious on the international extreme sport circuit and entry is capped at 1000 competitors annually (this year 1001 started the race in good but cold conditions). The ultimate goal of this event “apart from finishing” is to complete the race in less than

20hrs. If you do so, your reward is a special buckle and these are highly sought after and regarded.

Blair had been training for months for this event; the first ultra marathon event of any kind that he has competed in. He finished in the remarkable time of 18 hrs 55 min 03 sec - 453rd overall to finish out of the 638 competitors who actually completed the race. By any measure this was a fantastic achievement and shows the physical and mental resolve of a fine officer that is serving your community.

Note to bad guys – don’t think that you can outrun this officer.

News in brief Noosa U3A in Tewantin presents a fascinating series of talks by Eumundi resident Michele Mycock on the Six Wives of Henry VIII. Series begins on 20 August at 9am with Catherine of Aragon.

The Doonan Service Station is reportedly moving into a portable building in September while the current building is knocked down to make way for a new service station and supermarket on the site. United head office refused to make a statement to Eumundi Green. United Service Station in Doonan confirmed the project was council appoved and going ahead but wouldn’t confirm when, although they did insinuate that work would start before Christmas.

Your Say Keith Field Lindsell 6 May 192522 June 2012

Keith spent the last couple of years of his life at Erowal, Maleny where he moved following the death of his wife Hessie in Buderim in April 2009. Keith and Hessie came to Eumundi in the early 1980’s. They built their dream home Lindsell Way on 11 acres in Don Napier Rd Eumundi and established a wonderful garden and orchard.

The couple relished their years at Eumundi and became immersed in the community, in the Eumundi Historical Association, the Indee Theatre, St George’s Anglican Church and the Eumundi State School.

In everything there was a passion for culture, the environment and education interwoven at every point with a love of history and a tenacious desire to record the history for those who come later. Keith and

Hessie loved literature, gardens and they much enjoyed their travel adventures in England and Europe. They hardly missed a performance of the Indee Theatre.

Whilst Hessie was unstoppable in her writing several books on the history of families in Eumundi, about Cobb and Co and St George’s, Keith’s quirky sense of humour and his adoration for Hessie and her zeal made them a memorable couple. Hessie made a remarkable contribution to the establishment and sustainability of the museum in Eumundi now known as Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre.

Her family books are a popular reference there to this day. Keith and Hessie were generous donors to community causes, they lead historical walks around the town and made sure that history at the school was never boring.

They donated a herbarium and paintings to the University of the Sunshine Coast and were rewarded with their names on the honour board at the entrance to the University. There can be no argument that Keith and Hessie left Eumundi and its surrounds much better than they found it.

ECCO Community Forum 24 May I feel compelled to write this letter because of my disappointment in the way that a question from myself at the ECCO forum on 24 May was handled. My one and only question was addressed to Ross Clarke; I asked him why he resigned from the ECCO Board. The ECCO and meeting Chair simply shut down the discussion and forbade Ross to answer. I subsequently wrote to the chair, receiving (23 July) what I consider to be a spectacularly inadequate reply; again, there was no explanation why the discussion could not take place openly, just “the question you raised was inappropriate in any forum.”

Ross is a well-known and highly respected member of the Eumundi community. I for one, and others with whom I have spoken, were appalled that such a fair-minded and hard-working individual felt that he was unable to continue his work on the ECCO Board. We who are not privy to Ross’s motives can only guess at why he left; chinese whispers create unnecessary concern.

are unquestionably entitled to total transparency from ECCO; any question from the general public should be treated in a fair, diplomatic and civilised way; forbidding the question demonstrated a profound lack of respect for me and every other concerned individual. A community organisation such as ECCO, responsible for handling a communal revenue stream from the car park has a moral obligation to be completely open and transparent. I hope that in future meetings my questions and those of any other citizen will be handled more appropriately.

umundi Beef was an enterprise that evolved out of a desire for an active lifestyle and a long-term interest in health-sustaining food, after a brush with cancer in my twenties.

My partner purchased our farm at Belli Park in early 2010 and we set about infrastructure and soil rehabilitation projects that are still in progress today. We both came from other regions of Queensland and were attracted to the Sunshine Coast hinterland having spent many holidays at the Peregian family beach house. With no farm expertise between us, we employed the services of Eumundi and Woodford saleyard owner Mike Wheeler to help us determine the property most suited to our plan of raising prime beef cattle.

Eumundi Beef is a soleownership-business and operates on a lease over the farm. As a first time farmer my learning curve (from the outset) has been steep. Biological and Biodynamic farming methods are used. My philosophy is to create healthy soil, in turn growing healthy pasture for healthy animals to thrive and produce nutrient-dense food. Our

aim is to commence the process for Demeter “in conversion” accreditation later in the year; as with nature it takes time to bring the soil into optimum condition and to get accredited status.

As a boutique operation we have the capacity to turn out pasture-fed and finished beef to feed 50 local families on a yearly basis. They’re bred, raised and finished on the property and treated with care and respect to ensure the best eatingbeef we can produce. Knowing I give my cattle a great life makes it easier to take them to slaughter.

Our breeds; Australian Lowline Angus and Murray Grey, were chosen for their carcass winning traits. Our calves are left with their mums until ten months of age to give them a good start and weaned within the herd to reduce stress. I have learnt to take time and work with the herd’s daily rhythm; then things run smoothly. Each animal has its own unique personality and a knack for making sure that farm life is never dull.

Schools The Sound-space Wendy McMahon, teacher

W

hat is that beautiful sound I can hear in the playground? It all began with an idea to integrate many of the subjects that the children in Class 3 at Noosa Pengari Steiner School were learning. It was decided to build a sound-space for the benefit and enjoyment of all the students.

After studying the childrens’ designs, it was decided to use the theme of a Rainbow Serpent as it honoured the custodians of the land and was a common theme in many traditions – including Hindu mythology and the Old Testament.

The children were involved in all stages of the project. Some of their learnings were: having a budget – the children had to keep a tally

of expenses; the use of recycled and donated materials; the environment and sustainability; measuring tasks (the marimbas of the serpent were to be made of timber and plastic piping). We learned about resonance and how to set up a safe workspace. We also learnt many practical things such as: leverage – the large rock of the serpent’s head had to be moved manually and mixing and pouring concrete.

Perhaps even more importantly, we learned how to work as a team.

We found that we can do “our bit” by not wasting or polluting our environment; amazing things can happen when we work as part of a wonderful community.

Community Kids RDA Saddle Club on show in North Arm Swimming champ Troy

E

umundi aquatic centre regular, Troy Carlson competed recently in Sydney at the Australian Schools Swimming Champs.

Even though Troy competes in the ten year boys age group, he is just nine. He came home with impressive silver and bronze medals and a new personal-best.

Troy is ranked fifth in Australia and second in QLD.

The Riding Develops Abilities (RDA) Saddle Club’s open day in North Arm recently, included; a horse parade, carriage driving demonstration, hippotherapy (which is a physio session utilising the movement of the horse to affect change in the client), a group ride demonstration by some members of Noosa District High School, a dressage demonstration and Saddle Club. There was also a horseshoe throwing competition and guess the weight of horses, Trigger and Ollie. Amazing gourmet food and lots fun.

ome of the riders from the Sunshine Coast BMX club recently attended the Southern Zone Championships held in Gympie.

It was a great day with several riders winning trophies as well as the right to carry a number plate on their bikes for their placing in Southern Queensland.

For a small club the Sunshine Coast BMX club put in a strong showing: Eumundi local Kaden Cornwell-Smith (plate 101 middle row far right) – his first race meet.

Our sprockets were: Harrison Price, Aiden Lauriston, Kaden CornwellSmith. Some notable mentions

were: Tinbeerwah local Harry Bush who took out first and second place in his respective classes; others included a second and third from Hayden Jansen (middle back row), Kevin Mathie (far left middle row), Mitch Blinco (second from left middle row) and Dirk Winter (second from left back row).

We’re excited to have former world-ranked Dirk Winter return to the sport after time off.

Our strong results mean some riders have qualified for the Queensland “ID” squad to develop their skills; they now start training for the Queensland titles in Cairns late September.

Dragons Rugby Players still deliver the goods with determination and team spirit that rivals the competition out there on the Sunshine Coast Rugby Ladder. Made of the “good stuff”, they’re lean, clean, fighting machines.

While the Under 7s and 8s manage to hold their own, the Under 11s continue to play well, in good spirits and bond together. They lead by example and their comradeship towards each other and the little ones is an outstanding example of their character and show what great adults they will become.

What a be-fitting compliment to the coaches and parents involved in the club.

I

started my patchworking life 32 years ago when there was little knowledge of “how to” in Australia.

My love began to take over my life when I started to design my own patterns on the... yes, you guessed it ... “kitchen table”!

There was little available in the way of patterns, books or tools locally; if I was in need of these things then so must others be, I decided. My business has been built on things that were not available in the market place.

Also I’ve been teaching the art of patchwork in Australia for just about the same time; these days I live in Eumundi but travel the world.

With much trepidation, in May 2009, I launched my patterns in the US (I’ve never looked back); that trip led to fabulous opportunities with global distributors taking up my designs and I signed a book contract with one of the biggest US publishing companies. The following year,

we won the “Export Business of the Year” for the Sunshine Coast – I still pinch myself about that.

By Christmas Eve 2011, I had a contract to design my own fabric with another US company - oh what a Christmas present!

This year has been exciting too as we’ve opened an office in the US; a dream come true. My life is very fast and funfilled; I would not change it for the world. I have a fabulous team that supports me and keeps me grounded and helps make things happen. Next, I’m heading off in September to teach in Switzerland, The Netherlands and Norway and then it’s on to Houston Texas where my first range of fabric will be released.

he Noosa branch of the Embroiderers Guild is holding a free exhibition of their work.

“Stitched Delights” can be viewed at the Harbourside Gallery, Noosa Marina from 10 am–4 pm Monday to Saturday, and Sunday 9 am-3 pm until 31 August.

Embroiderer Jenny Adin-Christie, who trained with the Royal School of Needlework, recently shared her

knowledge of this ancient art with members of the Guild and inspired the exhibition.

his weekend sees the launch of the 17th annual season of Comedy & Consomme at The Indee; four dinner shows and two non-dining matinees for top value.

Two of the comedies are brand new; In Harold Parsley’s Wake and The Daffodils are both having their premiere while the third offering is the multi-award winning The Cupboard Was Bare.

In Harold Parsley’s Wake is set in the Morticia Tearooms (wakes catered for) where three sisters and a cousin come together to remember Harold their mildmannered museum curator brother whose only vice was “a flutter at the TAB”. However it is soon revealed that he has a lovechild by a bubble-dancer and that he is deeply in debt to the mob for gambling.

The Daffodils is about a

husband and wife-plot to thwart their married daughter’s plan to live with them after a split with her husband.

The Cupboard Was Bare is a comedy with deep emotional engagement, about two losers becoming winners through a small boy who’s having his eighth birthday.

The Comedy & Consomme package is a night of laughs and a three-course winter dinner all served up in a warm friendly atmosphere. The licensed bar will be open.

The dinner menu includes: a choice of pumpkin or roasted capsicum soup; Thai chicken curry or beef stroganoff or vegetable curry (on order); to finish: tea or coffee and pavlova with fresh fruit or chocolate mudcake with raspberry coulis or passionfruit cheesecake.

In praise of HiIlary Mantel and bringing up the bodies Judy Pattison

I

should declare my bias up front and say that Hillary Mantel is probably my favourite author. She is certainly my most frequently recommended. I have read a number of her books and have admired and enjoyed each immensely; even though they are all very different.

My favourite is Beyond Black about a beleaguered, workingclass, English psychic. When Mantel won the 2009 Booker prize for Wolf Hall, a historical novel based on the life of Thomas Cromwell, an advisor to Henry VIII, I felt somehow vindicated for my longstanding devotion. When we were asked to nominate a book for the Eumundi Book Club’s reading list, Bring Up the Bodies was at the top of my list.

Bring up the Bodies is a sequel to Wolf Hall. It is the story of

Anne Boleyn seamlessly built on the events of the previous novel and managing to enliven that well-worn story. However it is the character of Cromwell in both novels that dominates and engages; he emerges as exactly what was needed for this period of upheaval and transition in English history: pragmatic, capable, mostly humane and free of theological dogma.

As in all her work, Mantel’s use of language is stunning.

She manages to make the dialogue seem contemporary and accessible without being too modern. I didn’t want this novel to end. Fortunately a third volume is promised.

Even though each can be read on its own I suggest reading Wolf Hall first. You can’t have too much Hillary Mantel!

Where is your studio?

My studio is a located in the former patio of my house in Mapleton on the Blackall Range. The room was enclosed and originally used by my husband as his art studio.

What do you like about this space?

It’s a space dedicated as my studio - quite separate from the rest of the house with enough wall space for a small gallery.

What do you create here?

I have been a watercolourist since 2008 and enjoy painting landscapes, buildings, flowers and more recently portraits.

When do you paint and how often?

Ideally, I would love to paint every day but try to paint most afternoons.

What inspires you?

I am a member of the Blackall Range Visual Artists group and gain much inspiration from this group of proactive artists that meet weekly. I also find inspiration and resource material from subjects found in nature.

Chocolate and hazelnut tarts

Honey and vanilla cupcakes Makes 20

Cakes 200g unsalted butter, softened 1 ¾ cup castor sugar 4 Eggs 2 ¾ cups flour (can use gluten free flour) 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup milk (luke warm – tepid) Vanilla honey 1 cup honey 1vanilla bean split lengthways and seeds scraped Method Have all ingredients standing by because once cooking begins you shouldn’t leave the stove.

Pre-heat oven to 170C. Line the tin with muffin papers.

Cream the butter and sugar Add eggs, one at a time mixing well after each one Add the sifted flour and baking powder and vanilla Add milk and slowly stir in.

Spoon the batter into tins and bake for 15mins then check if ready Meanwhile bring the honey, vanilla bean and seeds to asimmer over a low heat.

When the cakes are out of the oven spoon the warm honey over the top of the cakes.

When cooled, ice with your favourite icing or serve warm with fresh cream and strawberries

Ingredients 1 large pre-baked tart shell or use individual ones (made or bought) 500ml cream 600g dark chocolate 100g white chocolate 1 tsp cinnamon 300g roasted hazelnuts (optional) Method Put the dark and white chocolate pieces in a bowl with the cinnamon.

Over a low heat bring cream to boil Pour over the chocolate and stir until all the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth.

Roughly chop the hazelnuts, sprinkle most into the tart shell and save some to decorate the top.

Carefully pour the chocolate mixture into the tart shell. Put it into the fridge to set.

Serve with your favourite icecream or cream and berries.

Eumundi Heritage Eumundi Post Office Bronwen Emery

T

he first Eumundi postal service opened in 1891 on 1 January in Arundells’ general store. It was in the spot next to the Commercial hotel (now Joe’s Waterhole) that currently houses shops. The Post Office then moved to the former Railway Station in 1904, with a Mrs Beddington as postmistress.

It moved back to Arundell’s store and then back to the Railway station in 1911. The stationmaster at the time Mr Neil also had the job of postmaster.

Then in 1912 a new Post Office was built beside the Country Women’s Association Hall. Locals considered this a much handier location as it was easier to wheel the mail from the railway station.

It operated from that spot until the present building was erected.

The postmaster at that time was Mr Webster who had come to Eumundi from Eidsvold and lived

in the house behind the present Post Office. He organised the building of the new Post Office in 1936 but retired before it was completed. The first Postmaster was Mr Connellan.

The telephone was connected in 1909 and the line connected Eumundi to Brisbane and Gympie. By 1913 there was a Public Telephone and two other telephones operating. The telephone exchange operated from the Post Office until it became automated in 1977 and the equipment was donated to the Eumundi Museum (now Discover Eumundi). The Post Office is an integral part of every small community and continues to provide a very necessary service to Eumundi residents. The well maintained building is another piece of our fascinating and wellpreserved local history.

Return of the railway gates

Eumundi local Reg Sharp remembers when these railway gates were taken away from the station for repairs in the early 90s. Recently they were returned to the village. Reg says now all we need is the signal box with its brass levers and glass lights to reappear! They mysteriously vanished after a just as mysterious fire that burnt the station down in the mid 90s. Reg has his suspicions it was the squatters in the storage shed.

hiropractic is a form of natural health care that focuses on the relationship between your spine and your central nervous system.

COPD is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, a condition that affects about 1 in 5 Australians over 40 years old and often causes breathlessness. Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are types of COPD.

ith this warm weather we have had an influx of baby birds in the last fortnight.

Often they take a tumble from their nest or are abandoned by mum. If you do find a baby bird, particularly if it is featherless, keep it warm and bring it to us or call 5442 8057.

Recently Kon gave us a great story on the Plover bird (issue 150) and the picture here is of a new arrival we have just rescued that is barely a few days old found in an abandoned nest. Plover birds nest on the ground not in trees. We have had some bluefaced honey eaters as well and are nursing them back to health.

overgrown trees or hedges. But we urge you to avoid cutting these in order to allow nesting birds to breed safely. It’s especially important this year as the wet and cold weather in the early part of the winter may mean that some species have bred later than normal and are still using their nests and feeding their young.

Nature Notes and Outdoors Restless Flycatcher Helen Hepburn

A

t first glance you might think this small bird is a Willie Wagtail, but as soon as it calls with its chirring sound, one realises one’s error.

The Restless Flycatcher (Myiagra inquita) is not a common visitor to our garden but appears at the same time each year as part of a migration.

I know this little bird as a Scissor Grinder but it is also called a Dish Washer “for some reason”.

They are a widespread species found across many areas of the mainland other than desert areas. Like most birds, they have a variety of calls. It is about the size of a Willy Wagtail but in the sunshine a distinct dark blue gloss can be seen on the feathers rather than the plain black of a Wagtail. Instead of black under the chin, the Flycatcher has a buff coloured area extending down the chest.

Restless Flycatchers take most of their food on the ground but

also do a fabulous job of eating insects especially spiders from around flyscreens, windows and eaves. Every household should have one on the “payroll”.

I watched this little bird from the kitchen as it hovered around the back of the house alighting briefly on a veranda chair to eat what it had found then back again for more. Sadly it was only here for about 10 days before moving on.

Sunshine Coast Koala Summit identifies steps to save

T

he Sunshine Coast Koala Summit last week brought together expert scientists, government representatives and community stakeholders to identify actions to conserve wild koala populations on the Coast and form the basis of a regional Koala Management Plan. Spokesperson for the organising committee Carolyn Beaton said, “There was no question that everybody was on the same page, with a desire to create positive change to avert koala extinction.”

The following actions were perceived as priorities for the council:  All available data (koala hospital records, community generated sighting data, regional eco system mapping) needs to be compiled centrally and assessed, to provide an accurate snapshot of the koala situation in the region;  Gaps in our knowledge – likely to be in respect to koala distribution, abundance and health – need to be filled by completion of comprehensive field assessments;  Advice of koala research scientists is needed in drafting of effective Koala Strategy;  Pilot koala recovery projects should be trialled within the Sunshine Coast region, with Noosa National Park to be one of the focal points; Thursday 16 August 2012

 Action is needed with state and federal governments, business and industry, special interest and expert groups, and the broader community, for project support;  Move now, with current resources, to fix koala mortality hotspots and reduce casualties.

The economic value of the koala was underlined by Sunshine Coast Destination CEO, Steve Cooper, who referred to recent research which said that the region’s flora and fauna, and the koala in particular, was a consistent driver of overseas tourism to the region. The Summit organisers are presently working on a detailed report to present to Mayor Mark Jamieson and councillors.

Small-eyed winter snakes Kon Hepers

A

couple of weeks ago on one of those really cold mornings, we lifted up the dog’s blanket just in front of the garage door. We weren’t too careful about it and the last thing we expected to find with the temperature down to four degrees, was a snake. Initially it was annoyed at being uncovered but did not persist and headed off for the rockery.

At first we thought it was a young Red-bellied Black Snake Pseudechis porphyriacus but a good look at the photograph (and a second opinion) made us sure that it was a Small-eyed Snake Cryptophis (formerly Rhinoplocephalus) nigrescens.

Both of course, they are dangerous but Small-eyed Snakes don’t grow to the size of the Red-bellied Black Snakes and deliver a smaller dose of venom in their bite. It was lucky that we shook out the blanket before the dog settled on it. Snake handlers at the recent Noosa Festival told us that a bite on the nose, lips or toes from even a small snake could have been fatal. A number of close calls and one death have been recorded for bites on humans.

Eastern Small-eyed Snakes are secretive and nocturnal and because of the red colouration on their flanks are often mistaken for Red-bellied Black Snakes. Up the eastern coast, they range across a wide variety of habitats, feeding mainly on lizards. They are live-

bearing with average litters of four to five young. “Our” snake was about 600 mm long, a little over half the maximum reached by this species. Red-bellied Black Snakes are more solid, muscular snakes and reach 2m in length.

Coming across snakes and lizards in winter is unexpected but should not be, it’s really not that unusual. When hiking in the Border Ranges on a cold July day we saw big Red-bellied Black Snakes and Burton’s Snakelizards (Lialis burtonis) on many sunny patches of the bush track.

It is commonly held that reptiles hibernate in the cold months; that’s not strictly correct: they are cold-blooded (ectothermic) relying on their environment for temperature regulation and activity; also a state of dormancy (brumation) occurs in cold and unfavourable conditions during which their metabolic rate is depressed, little food is required but they are not unconscious.

Some Australian marsupials and echidnas also hibernate in cold conditions; they lower their metabolic processes like breathing, heart rate and body temperature and become “unconscious”.

So if there is a warm spell or some sunny period even in winter, they can take advantage of it to be out and about.

We should bear that in mind and be cautious at all times.

Gardening Get your garden in shape for spring Cath Manuel

ith spring almost upon us now’s a great time to prepare your garden to grow all those delicious summer foods.

There are a few simple things you need to do to have your garden (and soil) in great shape for warm season plants – I believe in feeding the soil not the plants. If your soil is well fed and balanced then the plants will have the opportunity to uptake the nutrients and moisture they need.

Here are a few ways to get your garden in shape: ❦ Make sure the garden has enough sunlight hours; about 6 hours a day in our climate. ❦ Remove any old mulch covering the area and also remove any weeds or unwanted plants. Test the soil’s pH levels and make any necessary adjustments. ❦ If the plants removed are not invasive or have no seed heads then the stems and leaves can be chopped and dropped onto the soil surface; sprinkle some rock minerals or blood ‘n bone over the chopped plants. ❦ Add a good amount of organic matter – compost, mushroom compost, rotted animal manures, chook poo, green garden prunings, lawn clippings (not too much) chicken manure pellets or any other organic matter. ❦ Water well and then cover with

a good layer of mulch. ❦ Leave the area to rest for a few weeks and if there’s no rain give the garden another water each week. Kate, can we box this out?

After the resting period the soil should be packed with earthworms and other microbes – all working hard to create perfect soil. Now you can start planting veggie seedlings, sowing seeds or planting a few perennial herbs to grow beautifully throughout spring and summer. Aaahhh, warm sunny days ahead, enjoy!

Here at North Arm we take pride in growing many different herbs such as; basil, parsley, mint, thyme, sage, chives and many more. Some herbs are grown from seeds we collected last year. We then plant them, care for them, and then they are harvested. We pick them as we need them for cooking in our kitchen, so they are very fresh.

Some of the most memorable herbs dishes have been; lemon grass cordial, herb breads, and basil and coriander pesto – which

we put on homemade pasta.

We use herbs in nearly everything we cook. One of our favourite herbs is basil because we love the flavour and freshness and it makes a pretty garnish. We use it in Italian dishes. It is also very easy to grow and we grow lots of varieties. We also add herbs to salads for extra flavour and interest. We grow medicinal herbs such as; lavender for insect bites and relaxation, aloe vera for bites and burns, comfrey for sore bones and bruises.

Herbs look pretty and are a brilliant addition to our garden.

Now is a good time to plant them.

Coastal menace on the run

A

erial surveys of coastal areas from Fraser Island to South Stradbroke Island have helped biosecurity officers zero-in on infestations of the pest-plant Bitou bush.

Biosecurity Queensland’s invasive plants and animals officer Lyn Willsher said between late April and June this year almost all areas in Queensland where Bitou bush was known to occur had been surveyed by experienced field teams.

“Each identified infestation was successfully destroyed and locations were mapped so they

could be re-inspected in the future.

“The multi-agency approach is showing excellent results with a significant reduction of infestation…over the past two decades.”

Bitou bush is a very persistent weed; it is a bright green perennial shrub that can climb up to five m and has yellow chrysanthemumlike flowers on short stalks. It has the potential to replace native beachside vegetation destroying wildlife habitat.

Marie’s piece of paradise Revellers at the recent full moon dance at Verrierdale Hall being entertained by Barksdale Brass Band. Other bands on the night were Dub Marine and Mitzi.

Funds raised at the dance are being directed to a renovation project at the hall.

Getting rid of pesky plastic bags in Eumundi Thanks to all the businesses who participated in the Experience Eumundi survey about the use of non-recyclable plastic bag use in Eumundi. The stats so far are promising, with Eumundi looking like a very environmentally aware town.

avid and I recently took advantage of the experimental flights from the Sunshine Coast to Auckland to catch up with our son and his family on the North Island.

They live on a farm on the outskirts of the town of Dannevirke which is mid-way between the towns of Wellington and Napier. It has a Danish name and a Viking warrior as you enter the town because it

was founded by a group of Danes, Norwegian and Swedish settlers and like Eumundi was a timber town now given over to sheep and dairy farming. Its most famous son was the former Premier of Queensland, Sir Joh BjelkePeterson. The photographs are of our five-year-old twin grandsons (Taj and Eden) and our grand daughter (Aja) age 3 years.
