Medical Centre to re-open?

From the Caribbean to Theodore HUSQVARNA’S

here are encouraging signs that a community medical practice may open as early as mid-May. Eumundi has been without a doctor since Eumundi Family Medical Centre closed when the owners of the Eumundi centre and five others on the Coast went into receivership in July 2010. The medical practice has been acquired by Eumundi Combined Community Organisation Ltd (ECCO) through negotiations with the large national health services provider Healthscope as part of a campaign to restore a medical centre in Eumundi and to protect the security of past patient records. Work over several months to on-sell the Centre has proved challenging as has identifying GPs keen to work in a small town and medical centre. However, ECCO now reports that it is at an advanced stage of negotiation for premises and contracting with a local doctor to provide the GP services. Subject to finalisation of these crucial steps and satisfaction of government operating requirements, ECCO expects Eumundi Family Medical Centre to operate from mid-May. Watch this space!

allgums resident Heather Hawthorne may have been far away during the recent Queensland floods but she saw and heard of the devastation and her heart went out to those affected as if she was home at Tallgums. Heather says, “We’d all been watching the TV in horror at my workplace in the Caribbean, and my husband calling me, literally in tears, really prompted me to do something. I wanted to raise awareness and also to raise money for the victims.” Heather, an American-nowturned-Sunshine Coast resident, believes she has one of the most exciting jobs in the world. She travels part of the year on the world’s largest mega yachts (50–100m) with the rich and sometimes famous as their private massage therapist, skin care specialist and yoga instructor.

“The yachting community is full of Aussies, Kiwis and people from all over the world. With the support of a few generous sponsors, I organised a massage event. Twelve professional massage therapists from the island of St. Maarten and the yachts at the marina participated in the event. We offered massages for donation, with 100% of the proceeds going to the cause. My goal was to raise $1000. Throughout the day we gave 56 massages and raised just over $2000 and I know it will please the donors to know that the money has been given to the Rotary Club in the small community of Theodore where the Dawson River created such havoc several times for residents and the farming community.” “I was so pleased to see so many nationalities come together continued on page 4

e love our street, Elizabeth Street in Eumundi. We think it is the best street in town and here’s why. It’s close to town, has indigenous history and, according to the real estate mags, it’s the most prestigious street in Eumundi. We agree of course, and the history of the street is interesting. It was a tennis court in 1915 and the old train line ran right alongside it. We bought the land in 1994 and came here for picnics before we put the house, which originally came from Paddington in Brisbane and was built in the 1930s, on it in 1998. We wanted to live in Eumundi because it is such an awesome town to live in, full of life, happy

people and smiley faces. The thing we love the most is the everchanging views. Every day it is so beautiful, watching the stunning sunsets, the clouds rolling in and hiding the mountains and the storms and lightning shows which are just something else. We love watching the fog roll across the old cane fields in winter, the kangaroos that come to visit, and the 57 species of birds that come and go. We love the wind blowing the sugar cane and grasses across the fields, the smell of the fresh air, and lying on the water tanks watching the moon and the stars move across our clear, clear skies. We feel very blessed to live here.

Two male crew members, one American, one South African, on their only day off, drove more than an hour to the event to participate. The support from the yachting community was amazing.

Heather paid a special tribute to the Sandbar Restaurant at the Isle de Sol Marina in St Maarten, Select Charter Yachts and Charter Spa Services for sponsoring the event; all the therapists who donated their love, energy and time; and all the yachts, crew and professionals who gave generously.

he first meeting for 2011 was hosted by Sue & Ian from the Eumundi Business and PhotoShop. Cr Paul Tatton provided information to the group on the status of the roadworks, parking and signage as well as provided an open forum for members to contribute ideas, suggestions and provide feedback. A number of items were raised in relation to maintenance and beautification and these items will be followed up and reported on at future meetings. Being the first meeting since November there was a full agenda covering the various projects being undertaken by Chamber working parties as well as updates on the quest to provide replacement medical services, RV Friendly Town status, improved signage, businesses working together to achieve the best outcome for individual businesses as well as the Eumundi community. The Event Manager and Organising Committee Chair provided a comprehensive update on the forthcoming 2011 Australian Body Art Carnivale. The Carnivale will be held on the weekend of 13-15 May. Businesses were encouraged to extend trading hours to take advantage of the increased numbers of visitors expected over the very full weekend of competitions, music and entertainment. The Carnivale will centre in and around the Amphitheatre to allow for greater participation by spectators, more space for artists and models and provide an opportunity for the Carnivale to grow. All businesses will be provided details of the Carnivale, program, format, brochures, posters and plans for the Friday night opening function as well as the Saturday night street party. Any enquiries in relation to membership or other matters associated with the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce Inc., please email to the Secretary at ecc@eumundi.info or go online to www. eumundi.info. Question We note that Council's new Active Transport Plan 2011−2031 sets out the strategic planning for walking and cycling on the Sunshine Coast. What changes are we likely to see in our area over time from this Plan? Response The Active Transport Plan develops a strategic approach to walking and cycling for the full Sunshine Coast region detailing priorities for planning and policies. The policies will guide council actions in the future including where infrastructure is provided, improving safety and encouraging and supporting more walking and cycling. Improvements will be seen in completing the network and making connections to schools and public transport stops. Details of the changes that are likely to be seen in the Eumundi area over time are now being developed as part of the Active Transport Implementation Plan. The Implementation Plan will create a plan of actions for each local area based on adopted policies. Further details of planning for the Eumundi area will be available after the Implementation Plan is finalised.

News in brief A blueprint for financial sustainability was recently adopted by Council. The Financial Sustainability Plan contains a number of commitments intended to support long term financial sustainability and maintain its currently strong financial rating over a 10-year period. The parameters include such things as a 3.5% general rate increase target, zero increase in levies, maintenance of the current 5% discount for early payment of rates, and a 90% completion target for the annual capital works program. Flood and cyclone legal help for people affected by floods and cyclones has been developed by the Queensland legal profession to ensure affected people can easily obtain independent legal advice and information on issues that may affect them. The service can assist with issues such as insurance claims, tenancy, employment, credit, debt, fencing and family law. Visit www. floodlegalhelp.qld.gov.au. Free CPR signs are available for the first 200 pool owners who contact the office of Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes. The new pool CPR signs can be a valuable lifesaving and educational tool. The signs explain the 10 steps of the CPR process, with pictorial diagrams for quick and easy demonstration. Back to Cooroy Day on Sunday 3 April between 10am and 3pm at the Cooroy Memorial Hall is an opportunity for local residents to meet and share memories with those who travel to Cooroy from afar. Families catch up with long lost cousins, school friends unite and others just share the bond that brings past and present residents together. To book, phone 5442 5570. Cooroy VIEW Club is a friendship club that supports the Smith Family charity and holds luncheon meetings at 11am on the second Tuesday of every month except January at the Cooroy Hotel Function Rooms. Socials at friends’ homes or outings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month. New members are very welcome. Further information is available from the president, Grace Taylor, on 5471 1364 or Lal Vider on 5449 1902 or email reviere9@bigpond.com. Pest Survey Programs are scheduled by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council over the next year to control declared pests within the boundaries of the Sunshine Coast region. The programs will involve Council investigating declared pest plants on private property in accordance with the Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Act 2002, and the objectives of the former councils’ Pest Management Plans. Council will seek voluntary compliance and collaborate with landholders wherever possible to facilitate the control of declared pests. Where pests are located on a property and a pest control notice is served, information will be provided to the owner outlining the requirements of the legislation and advising of the option to develop a pest management plan for the property.

s we all know, Eumundi is famous for the markets and is also the gateway to Noosa and beyond. What appals me though is the state of each roundabout leading into our beautiful town. Every week I drive around the northern roundabout to see overgrown weeds and a deep ugly hole. There seems to be a lack of planning and care put into our roundabouts. Why is it that Noosa, Nambour, Maroochydore and Caloundra can have lovely landscaped roundabouts and we have the most unsightly ones? As a local nursery owner we

would even be willing to contribute some plants as I’m sure other nurseries would do to beautify our entrances to the town. It appears one resident near Eumundi 110 has even planted a shrub to try and make their roundabout more appealing. Whoever is in charge of these should be ashamed and should talk to the appropriate authorities and ask them to make our gateway a nicer place to drive into. Come on people of Eumundi and surrounding areas, stand up and ask why we have not got the same standard of roundabouts as others on the Sunshine Coast.

Your Say Community bus service a winner It’s Friday night, the end of a long week. The family are home and we decide to go into Eumundi for dinner. I remember that I saw a notice about the new community bus and we phone the driver, Paul. In next to no time we are in Eumundi at our chosen restaurant. The convenience of this service is fantastic as is its contribution to road safety and responsibility. We are very happy to add to the donation box. Paul provides a friendly, professional service and there is a lot of chatter between locals. The only letdown in the Friday night experience is eateries closing too early. After a lovely Thai meal we took a walk for a coffee, but at around 8pm doors were closed. I recommend the Friday evening service to everyone who lives in the district. Phone 0488 322 323 to book. Tracey says, “Our whole family loves Eumundi Green and we can’t bear to think old copies might be pulped. “We had this idea to give them a second life by going home with a market shopper, in this case perhaps a trip to the USA! “We are a large family and we all have a chance to contribute to the re-use assembly line” she said.

ecause I am writing a book about the people who breathe life into the Eumundi Market, I have reflected for some time on the market itself. Fifteen years of visiting this unique market and now living in Eumundi and absorbing it close hand has given me an insight from an outsider’s perspective. Firstly I see it as a society within a society, its own entity with all the same problems as any society. The uniqueness of the market rests with the artistry of the local residents – nowhere have I seen such talent drawn together in one place. The ebb and flow of the market over the years sees change here and there, but the backbone of the enterprise will go on forever because of the need for locals to showcase their talent, and for great country cooks to present their gourmet culinary edibles. And as for those wise remedies, clairvoyant insights and entertainers performing regularly, what better way to serve

a community – a “win win” all round. These days it is not unusual to see school children playing an instrument. A chance for an audience, a few coins and confidence building amongst young people is a good thing. Yes, Eumundi Market is a business, and yes I’m listening to the sour echoes of an economic downturn hitting the leafy streets, but the good thing about life is that nothing stays the same. This applies to the market. However I see Eumundi Market continuing for many many years because when stall holders leave they are quickly replaced with others who breathe new life in with their new products. There is always something new to see. Tourists will always enjoy this famous market and locals will always have a passionate attachment. The old song The Carnival is Over will never ever apply to this special and magical market.

Arts Scene William Wallace as Motel with Summer Bowen as Tzeital in Fiddler on The Art, love and chocolate Indee Theatre Roof at Noosa Arts Theatre. News John Burls

Dead funny? It’s just a week away to the opening of the multi-award winning comedy Dead Funny. It’s a decade since this play was first produced and premiered at The Indee to a sellout season. In its reincarnation, the theatre is again blessed with a top-line cast featuring husband and wife team Richard and Sandy Luscombe, Debra Pitura, Marion Johnson, Sharon Ward and Lexi Kehl. In 2001-02 it picked up 15 awards including, for writer John Burls, Best Play (twice), Best New Script (twice) and Best Comedy (twice). Thankfully, it hasn’t dated in any respect and the cast plays it for laughs for all it’s worth. If you haven’t experienced a night at The Indee, this would be a good introduction. Evening performances start at 7.30pm and you’re out by 10pm. There’s a coffee shop and licensed bar and of course it’s airconditioned. Opening night tickets all $20 (includes drink and nibbles), other nights $20, concessions $18 and Sunday afternoons $18. Performances 7.30pm Fridays and Saturdays 11, 12 and 18, 19 March, and 2pm Sunday 13 and 5pm Sunday 20 March. Eumundi Timber Challenge

H

istory was made in stifling February conditions when Eumundi Tennis Club hosted the inaugural Eumundi Timber Challenge. It proved to be the mixture of laughs and competitive spirit the event was billed for. Using wooden tennis racquets and dressed in period costume, players and spectators pressed on inspiring an atmosphere of fun and frivolity in true Eumundi style. The Don Napier Trophy was contested strongly with these players triumphant: Men Singles winner Zak Davidson, runner up Jai Fitzpatrick Ladies Singles winner Sue Clarke, runner up Argi Matus Mixed Doubles winners Chris Etheridge and Jeannette Miles, runner up Mark Whisker and Rebecca Whisker It was a historic and nostalgic event. Matriarch Jan Napier was there throughout the day and awarded the winners and runner ups prizes. Local artist Bob Gammage from “Theatre of Life Artistry had been painting the tournament throughout the day. An auction was held for this outstanding piece. Jan Napier was the successful bidder. She proudly donated it back to the Eumundi Tennis Club to hang above the perpetual trophy.

he Slow Food Movement is strongly supported on the Sunshine Coast. Key principles of the movement are to protect and enjoy your community’s culinary heritage, maintain the health of your community and landscape and enjoy quality food produced in harmony with the earth and local culture. Chef Peter Wolfe and partner Shauna of Cedar Creek Farm Bush Foods are members of Slow Food Sunshine Coast Hinterland

and have kindly provided the information and recipes here. Our available local food has been greatly influenced by the recent flooding. Bunya nuts are generally available in three-year cycles: the first year provides a very abundant crop, the next provides a moderate offering, and the last year has very light cropping. This year should have been a light harvest. As it turns out, with all the rain this was a bumper year

as was witnessed at the recent Bunya Dreaming held at Baroon Pocket Dam on 28 January. Bunya nuts were traditionally eaten by indigenous people, roasted in an open fire or buried for storage where they fermented and softened. To get the nuts out, you must remove the kernels from the large cones and then cut the fibrous casing from the kernel. The recipe here for Bunya Nut Felafels really brings out the beautiful taste of these delicious

local nuts. Red Claw this year are abundant, large and delicious as can be seen from the photograph. With not much preparation they can provide quick and easy food sensations that we the local people can enjoy fresher than anyone else! The recipe here demonstrates the versatility of this local product and why they are in such demand in some of the best restaurants locally and internationally.

Mountain Pepper Red Claws Method Mince or finely grind bunya nuts in a food processor. Grate the carrot and finely chop the onion. Mix all ingredients together and season to taste. Form into small patties and shallow fry at a gentle heat until golden brown and crisp on the outside. Patties taste extra good fried in macadamia oil.

Ingredients 500 g raw Red Claw tails 200 g potato starch 1 tblsp Tasmanian mountain pepper, coarsely ground 1 tblsp sea salt Juice of 1 lime 2 kaffir lime or lemon myrtle leaves, very finely shredded 2 tblsp macadamia oil 1 tblsp Worcestershire sauce

Method Dust the tails with potato starch. Heat a dry wok. Add salt and pepper and cook until it starts to smoke. Add the oil, then immediately add the tails and stir briskly over maximum heat until they have seared. Add sliced leaves, lime juice, Worcestershire sauce and cook for 30 seconds.

Health and Lifestyle Step into better health and fitness?

A

t autumn is upon us, it is quite likely that many New Year resolutions to address health and fitness are in tatters. This summer has not helped with many outdoor activities curtailed. Often the hardest part of changing health and fitness is the very first step – getting started. Local Bethwyn Hancock’s story is an inspiration to think again about New Year resolutions. She has been attending Make a Difference Health & Fitness studio at Cooroy and has lost 20 kg and improved her muscle tone. “I’d always taken my fitness for granted when I was younger as I was a ballet dancer. However, since having children I hadn’t done any exercise at all and the scales had crept up to alarming figures” Bethwyn said. “I never would have believed that I would be the type of person to exercise five times a week, but that’s what I’m doing now - once a week with Lee in the studio as well as swimming, jogging or bike riding” she said. Local Lucy Cloonan leads exercise classes at Eumundi’s amphitheatre each Tuesday and Fri at 6am for all fitness levels. It’s a peaceful spot surrounded by the trees that make the town of Eumundi and restore the soul. Classes are also available at Yandina with crèche support. Lucy also provides personal training for individuals (or a friend can share the cost with a friend or partner). “I have been working in the fitness industry for 11 years and it is still so exciting to see people making positive changes to their health and wellbeing. We live in a busy world and most people are time poor, unfortunately our health often gets put to the bottom of the pile. Engaging a

personal trainer is a commitment to improve your health and wellbeing, it is great for your motivation and, believe it or not, exercise can be fun! One size doesn’t fit all, everyone needs something different and that is what personal training is all about” Lucy said. If personal training is ruled out because of budget, a group exercise class is a great way to get fit whilst meeting other people. Class participants often comment that group exercise classes feel like personal training in a group environment, everyone is given something to suit their needs and health issues are taken into account. Maybe yoga at Anahata Yoga Temple Eumundi is of interest. Donna Thordarson teaches a balanced vibrant Vinyasa (flowing) style of yoga to energise, rejuvenate and calm, helping with weight management and improved tone, stretch and strengthening of the body.

Community Spotlight Paul takes it all off … for Leukaemia Caroline Arnett

R

oughly six years ago, Paul Ayres and his family eagerly began their new lives here in Eumundi. His thoughtful neighbour suggested that he might like a cold beer down at the pub and introduced him to Friday afternoons at Joe’s Waterhole, where all the regulars soon became his good mates. Kev Simms is one of the mates who recently roped Paul into doing something seriously confronting. At 2pm on 12 March, Paul and Kev, backed by the lively support of Uncle Bob’s Jug Band in the back room of Joe’s Waterhole, have courageously agreed to shave off their cherished long locks, beards and all, to help raise money for Leukaemia research. They are urging as many people as possible to join them at Joe’s for a laugh and to show generous support for The World’s Greatest Shave. Paul Ayres left the UK in 1989 as a highly qualified, third generation City & Guilds Master Painter after his father taught him everything he knew about his craft.

“Dad hates my ponytail,” says Paul, “he’ll be so glad when it’s gone. He jokes that I left the UK in ’89 with a crew cut as a man, and came back as a boy.” As a qualified teacher, Paul enjoys passing on the knowledge of his trade which includes marbling, graining, trompe l’oeil, French polishing and many other

specialised effects. Most days on the Coast you can find him working with builders, architects and private clients painting houses. With little prompting, he’ll proudly offer photographs of the work he was appointed to do on Richard Branson’s Makepeace Island. On his earlier travels in Holland, he met his beautiful Dutch wife

Saskia and was stricken by an incurable case of love at first sight. They worked and travelled for 8 years of their 19-year marriage and now proudly proclaim that Eumundi is “forever home”. Paul and Saskia appreciate the beauty of Australia. “Here the light is brighter making the colours more vibrant, instead of shades of grey,” explains Paul. “There’s a sense of freedom here created from the vast spaces that European cities so often lack.” They share “paradise” with their four children, Shane (11); Charlie (9), Joshua (7) and Gerra (6). Paul confesses that his children are trees huggers. He believes that children can be given too much these days. “My kids are much happier running around chasing lizards.” Most weekends they’ll be at the beach, fishing or camping, “We live in paradise, so we’ve got to show them paradise,” Paul says. Paul encourages you to join him at his “office”, Joe’s Waterhole, to witness 21 years of growth fall to the floor for a very worthy cause.

Gill and Col, one of Eumundi's finest couples Gill and Col Brownhill run the Eumundi Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre at 1411 Eumundi Noosa Rd, rescuing injured birds and animals and caring for them day and night until they can be returned to the wild. They started their amazing work well over a decade ago. Each year we make a donation to the centre to help with the running costs. All the operational costs are financed almost entirely from the community and Gill and Col themselves. They are supported by 17 volunteers one of whom has been assisting the Centre by applying for deductible gift recipient (DGR) status for the Centre's trust so that it can receive tax deductible gifts and hopefully develop a sound financial base for years to come. If this is supported, the Trust will launch an appeal for funding to secure the Centre's long term operations. The Brownhills have noticed a big influx of young kookaburra "guests" this summer, a direct result of falls from nests. The flooding causes damage to white ant nests which have become a common nest for kookaburras. Figbirds have also been particularly affected.

Bits and Pieces DID YOU KNOW?

Some facts from the 2010 campaign from Clean up Australia, Qld

T

he top five rubbish items were small paper, polystyrene pieces, cigarette butts, bottle caps and lips and plastic bags. Around 97,500 Queenslanders worked across 1340 registered sites. Roadways were the most polluted areas averaging twice the number of rubbish items per site than any other location. Plastic was the most common rubbish item found in Queensland, making up 30% of all rubbish, a slight increase from 28% in 2009. Cigarette butts accounted for 9% of all rubbish collected from sites in Queensland, down from 24% in 2008 and 17% in 2009.

hat is eco fashion all about? At the top end of the fashion industry some designers are now producing carbon neutral ranges, and installing solar power to factories, which is a good start. But, day-to-day, the most important thing we can do is reduce landfill and our consumption of new clothes. Consider rubbish tips full of cheap hardly worn “plastic” (polyester/nylon) clothes that take years to break down. Some great ways to do your bit are:  Mend clothes – put on a patch of funky fabric, and take hems up or down to extend the life of your clothes.  Look for market stalls making (adults and kids) clothes from recycled fabrics.  Opp shops or Yandina markets are great for 2nd hand clothes.

 When buying new clothes look for natural fibres that will break down once they are disposed of, and better quality items that will last.  If you don’t have time to trawl through the opp shops on the Coast, try pre-loved fashion outlets in Eumundi I’ve found two favourite pieces at Tree of Cotton behind the Christmas shop which I will wear and treasure for years to come. Bernadette collects “the best of” second-hand clothes.  When you clean out your wardrobe, make the effort to take stuff to a charity shop, don’t bin it.

When taking a shower I often use a little of the shampoo I have used on my hair to lather my body proper. Imagine the shock when yesterday I read what was written on the bottle: “For extra volume and body.” No wonder it is so hard to keep my weight under control. Leanne’s green thumb Tibouchina – plant of the week Tibouchinas are an evergreen plant that is native to Brazil. They grow well in warm to cool temperate regions of Australia, enjoying sunny to partly shaded positions with light friable soil and plenty of moisture during the growing season. There are many different varieties of tibouchinas, purples, pinks and white, growing from 60cm to 4m. Alstonville grows to approximately 4m with purple flowers, Kathleen is a pink flowering form that grows the same height and Noelene which flowers profusely through winter has masses of deep pink flowers gradually fading to white. Chameleon is a dense fast growing shrub 1.5–2 m flowering in spring and autumn with sporadic flushes throughout the year. The flowers open white with a slight mauve blush changing to mauve and then to deep pink over several days. Jazzie flowers in heavy masses of purple flowers with white centre eyes and white stamens. Jazzie performs all year round and prefers full sun or semi-shade growing to 1.5m. Jules is a rounded shrub to 1m, deep green leaves and large rich purple blooms en masse in autumn and early winter. Groovy Baby which grows to 60cm with a spread of 80cm is suited to pots, borders, rockeries or garden beds and has striking long lasting vibrant purple flowers throughout winter. Tibouchinas are virtually pest free and need little maintenance. Pruning for shape after flowering is recommended and fertilising regularly with a slow release fertiliser. We have all of these varieties at the Garden Centre.

ustainability on the Coast has taken a leap forward as Council has agreed to invest $2.2M over the next two years into three spearhead energy projects to help achieve key targets set in the Sunshine Coast Energy Transition Plan:  to be carbon-neutral as an organisation by 2020  to reduce crude oil-based fuel use by five per cent per year  to stimulate regional production of renewable energy into the grid of 40-megawatt capacity by 2015 and 100-megawatt capacity by 2020. The three projects, identified in the plan include a clean energy and solar implementation program, a sustainable biodiesel project, and energy efficiency measures across Council’s buildings and facilities. Environment Portfolio Councillor Keryn Jones said Council’s fuel and electricity costs in 2009/10 amounted to $13.2M and those costs are predicted to rise into the future.

“These projects will enable council to not only reduce its costs, but more importantly its carbon emissions and reliance on oil into the future,” Cr Jones said. “Sustainability is about providing what we need today without compromising tomorrow – putting systems in place now means that we can limit the impact we are currently having as well as protecting our society, environment or economy into the future.” Economic Development Portfolio Councillor Lew Brennan said that as the largest organisational entity in the region, Council is able to lead the charge in developing the Coast’s alternative energy market. “We recently put a call out to companies who were interested in supplying energy alternatives,” Cr Brennan said. “Through this process, Council identified 56 potential companies who are interested in supplying services in the area of energy conservation and generation.”

Nature Notes Marine cone shells

O

n Coolum Beach we picked up a bleached and broken sea shell. There was enough shape and colour left to allow identification as a cone shell and the triangular markings placed it in the “textile” branch of the cone family of molluscs. There are about 400 species of cones world-wide ranging from 6 mm to more than 200 mm in length, from light and fragile to solid and heavy, some common with non-descript markings and others rare and beautifully decorated and worth thousands of dollars. Cones can be divided into three groups based on feeding methods. One group feeds on marine worms and other small organisms (vermivorous), a second group feeds on other shellfish (molluscivorous) and the third group eats fish (piscivorous). Just like land snails, marine molluscs have a sort of sandingbelt of teeth called radulae, but in the cone family there is an extension to the oesophagus called a proposcis, in the tip of which is a specially modified tooth connected to a venom gland. This tooth is used to “harpoon” prey and inject a powerful neurotoxin. The shell we found was a Textile Cone (Conus textile), a sand-flat dweller probably washed down

Kon Hepers from up north. It is a member of the second group which hunts other sea snails, kills them, sucks them out of their protective shell then digests them in the proboscis/oesophagus. This species is dangerous, and a large specimen, as pictured, could cause death in humans. The really dangerous ones are the third group which produce a venom perhaps more powerful than the taipan. In their under-sea environment, where everything quickly eats everything, it is necessary that when they “harpoon” a passing fish, death has to be instantaneous and within crawling range otherwise they would always be beaten to their prey by faster-moving rivals. Still roughly cone-shaped, these shells have a wide flaring lip to allow ingestion of fish often longer than the shell itself. The largest and most notorious of this group is the Geographer Cone (Conus geographus), which has been responsible for a number of deaths and its venom was the suspected murder weapon in a society murder investigation in Sydney in the early 1960s. Currently there is renewed research into cone shell venom in the quest for possible medical applications.

The gardens stand to benefit from the generosity of a private donor with a love of the arts and gardens and a desire to see one of the region’s hidden treasures more widely recognised and enjoyed. An anonymous bequest of $200,000 enabled the establishment of the program that will see the creation of a Stone Sculpture Walk within the gardens over the coming years. Budding sculptors currently have the opportunity to enter the new Noosa Stone Sculpture Bequest program, with applications open until 31 March 2011. The bequest will be awarded biennially and will

Computer Coop Nathan Woodcock

T

his week is part three of our journey through your computer and today we discuss hard drives. Many people think of the hard drive as the actual computer itself, the whole case or box. Actually, the hard drive is inside your computer and is what all of your data is stored on. Windows, pictures, emails, documents, music – all of this is stored on your hard drive. Hard drives have ever-increasing capacities which are measured in Gigabytes (GB). Where a computer that is three years old may have a 160 GB hard drive, a standard computer today would likely have at least 500 GB and often 1000 GB or more. Consumer hard drives are made

up of one or more “platters”, or spinning discs, a bit like a record player. The platters spin at speeds from 5400 rpm, usually 7200 rpm in normal PCs and up to 15000 rpm in high-end hard drives. A small mechanical arm moves across the platters magnetically reading information from them. They are very precise, fragile mechanical devices, and with this in mind you might be more forgiving the next time one fails, and understand why backing up is so important. For a whole gallery of images of hard drives and their internals, follow this link – http://tinyurl. com/47rzkss. If you have a problem or a question phone or drop an email.

he team at Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre is preparing for the opening of a remarkable exhibition by photographer Kim Guthrie. Titled EXTRAordinary, the collection of images is described by the artist as “an honest depiction of the beauty in everyday life”. Manager of Discover Eumundi Wendy Birrell says the exhibition is inspirational in celebrating the raw simplicity and “realness” of everyday Australians. “As a social commentary, the EXTRAordinary exhibition is a great fit displayed amongst Eumundi’s heritage collection,” Wendy says. “Kim has created these images as a wonderful antidote to the airbrushed, blemish free, sanitary illusion of perfection and beauty so often seen in photographs fed to the masses.” This fascinating and quirky collection highlights the commonplace or stereotypical characters from an oftenoverlooked side of Australian culture. “It’s real Aussies photographed

in their everyday environments just doing what they do. “And while Kim photographed far and wide in sourcing subjects for the exhibition, the fact that he is based in nearby Cooroy means a good number of images are of Sunshine Coast faces,” she says. To coincide with the exhibition, Discover Eumundi will present a slide show of Kim’s previously unshown images of characters from the Eumundi environment. Kim Guthrie’s self-published photographic books will be for sale at Discover Eumundi for the duration of the exhibition. The exhibition will be on display from Thursday 3 March until Thursday 28 April, with the official opening taking place on Thursday 10 March at 5.30pm. Those interested in attending the official opening are invited to contact Discover Eumundi on 5442 8762. Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre – Corner of Gridley & Memorial Drive, Eumundi. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 10am – 3pm, Saturday 9am – 3pm, Sunday 10am – 2pm.

Methodist Church Centenary We are still looking for events, people and memories that were connected to this building over the last 100 years. For example do you remember Sunday School picnics? A much looked forward to event, the games, the picnic food with special treats, people having fun, not normally part of the “Going to Church” experience in those days! In Eumundi it was a great occasion to have a day out and get together with friends and neighbours. Then there was the choir (photo above), a group of mixed generations and sexes drawn together by a love of music and an outlet to express it. If you can help with any photos or stories please contact us at Discover Eumundi. We would love to celebrate the centenary by sharing our rich history. You can also e-mail us: manager@discovereumundi.com.au or phone 5442 8762.

Locals Home and Abroad An unexpected 20th wedding anniversary adventure Joyce Jackway do love an adventure, especially the spontaneous and unplanned kind. Mind you we did have other plans for our anniversary celebrations. We booked a trip to Hamilton Island for our special 3 February date but Cyclone Yasi had other plans. I shed a few tears but after a good cup of tea with a dear friend I rang my husband and announced we should go on an adventure anyway! I could feel him cringe at the other end of the phone. “Okay” came the reply. Thursday morning 3 February arrived, what a special day! The car was packed with a tent, esky, thermos, bikini, camera and of course husband. At the gate the car turned a sharp left – we headed south, past the Yandina exit, past the Caboolture exit, over the Gateway and forever onwards. The drive was long with loads of roadworks due to the flood damage – but our spirits were extra high. We drove on to Girraween National Park but alas more flooding meant the road was closed into the park so we decided to keep going. We finally arrived at the Celtic Standing Stones at Glen Innes with our

faithful thermos. At the end of town we turned and found a wonderful tree-lined drive and a piece of heaven at the back of a town not well known for its tourism draw: rocks to climb, a little waterfall, a short walk, peace and tranquillity, kangaroos and wild blackberries to pick, the whistling of birds at sundown and the love of my life. The next day we set off fossicking, we talked like teenagers and laughed all day trying our luck for a sliver of sapphire or two at the river. The afternoon called for a drive towards the coast and we wound our way to Ballina. We visited Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads where I was in heaven yet again – it was the local market day with treasures at the garage sales in town. A quick jump off the bridge (don’t tell the kids) and some delicious fish and chips and we headed to Currumbin Rock and a little walk at Springbrook National Park. The only place that can top this day off is home so we decided to do it – we arrived home to three ecstatic kids and a very surprised grandpa and smile and grin at each other.
