A

large crowd gathered in Memorial Dr despite the threatening weather for the now traditional Eumundi walk and service for ANZAC Day. The early morning service at Verrierdale was also well attended.

There were many poignant moments with the tolling of the bell for the 20 Eumundi men lost during WWI, the wreath laying for the seven WWII Eumundi service men who gave their lives, and the playing of the Last Post.

he Australian Body Art Carnivale is a shining star in the Eumundi cosmos. Not only is it a unique event but it is Australia’s premier body art event attracting artists and visitors from around Australia. And now it is about to get even better!

I

n moving ANZAC Day commemorations locally last Monday we were reminded of the 2000 Australians who on that day 96 years ago were either killed or wounded at Gallipoli. The heroism of the men at Anzac Cove earned the young Australia respect and honour in the eyes of other countries and gratitude for the sacrifice at home.

Since then and particularly in recent years, much has been expected of Australia and its armed forces in trouble spots around the world. ANZAC Day is their special day and it is terrific to see in our midst and it seems across Australia an increased desire to understand, respect and honour being shown by young Australians.

My Street – Balkin Rd Eumundi

O

nly two houses on Balkin Rd and two on adjoining Payne St were visible when Andy and Olive Stirling bought their property on the corner in 1986.

Andy fondly recalls Olive’s desire to inspect a house they had seen advertised while they were stopped for lunch in Cooroy during a caravanning holiday.

They liked what they saw and, holiday forgotten, they negotiated a price and paid a deposit before returning to Vincentia NSW to pack.

Over the years, Andy has seen all the vacant blocks on Balkin Rd and Payne St occupied. In January this year the road was resurfaced, but some early sections remain without kerb and channelling.

friendly neighbourhood, and most days he sits on his front verandah to wave to passing drivers.

Olive passed away in July 2008. Andy reckons her decision to inspect in Balkin Rd has proven very rewarding.

Andy saw active service in WWII and at last Monday’s Eumundi ANZAC Day service he laid a wreath at Cpl Vincent Thomas O’Brien’s plaque in the WWII memorial.

n early meeting was held this month to facilitate attendance by members to the discussion on de-amalgamation scheduled in the School Hall in Napier Rd. Glen Elmes MP attended the meeting and provided members with a general update on what was happening at State level as well as some insight into the overall “Free Noosa debate.”

Cr Paul Tatton also was in attendance and provided members with an update at local government level including maintenance on Dick Caplick Park and the intersection.

An update was provided by members who attended the workshop on the Regional Development Australia Fund proposals for capital works in regional areas and how the Eumundi community and its associations could get involved and perhaps benefit from successful applications. A working party is looking at the projects that may be incorporated under this program and further updates will be provided at future meetings.

The Organising Committee chair provided an update on the forthcoming Australian Body Art Carnivale and a reminder to all members and guests wishing to participate in the Friday 13 May Masked Gallery Walk to purchase tickets online at $60 per ticket.

A free lantern making workshop will also be conducted on Saturday 7 May and those interested in participating should contact Danielle Taylor on 0403 023 802.

It was agreed by the meeting that the forthcoming Annual General Meeting will be held on the 4th Monday in May, i.e. 23 May 2011 at 5.30pm and will be held at the CWA Hall. Nomination forms for executive positions will be sent out to all members shortly.

oel Playford outlined a case for de-amalgamation based on a model of governance with a small number of councillors and a shire-wide and community-based advisory structure. The financial model presented was based on a viable cost structure for the future and managed separation costs.

In a show of hands, the audience indicated overwhelmingly support in response to prompt “Is it worth giving it a go”. The majority of the audience expressed a preference for no divisions if Council comprised six councillors.

Johanne’s message was that residents in adjacent areas to Noosa including Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale will likely face a vote on whether to join a new Noosa Council or stay with the

Sunshine Coast Regional Council if the state government changes at the next election.

Campbell Newman has indicated his support for de-amalgamating Noosa and appointing a commissioner to determine where the boundary should be. This may involve residents in adjacent areas voting.

W

e have been kept busy with a number of reported break and enters occurring in the Maroochy River area, including an unknown person unlawfully entered a house in Ocean Vista Drive whilst the occupants were watching television. The thief left empty handed after he was apparently scared off by the occupants.

An unoccupied house at Caree Court was entered by an offender through a sliding external door.

The offender in this instance made off with a large amount of property including a plasma television, a computer, jewellery and other items.

Another house in Barcrest Drive was the target for criminals the previous month.

Thieves also broke into two temporary office buildings and some machinery at the Northern Network Alliance site on Bunya Road North Arm. A large generator, a fridge, microwave and an assorted amount of specialised equipment was stolen. The thieves also poured diesel over the machinery and through the offices.

Anyone with any information which may assist us in apprehending these criminals is urged to contact us on 5442 8222. In some follow-up of a break and enter reported last month at North Arm, a 16-yearold youth has been charged and will appear in court shortly. Most of the property he stole has now been located.

Facing the future – a wonderful opportunity!

W

ithin the next 12 months, subject to a change of government, all of us who live in this beautiful hinterland will be faced with a clear choice – join a new Noosa Council or stay with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

Make no mistake – the Noosa independence Alliance is working hard to achieve de-amalgamation and have demonstrated that is not only possible but feasible and cost effective.

Deciding which Council area we want to be a part of will be one of the most important decisions we will be asked to make for the future of our area.

What do we want: We want Eumundi to retain its unique character and its historical buildings and feel. We want Doonan and Verrierdale to remain a beautiful and peaceful rural and rural residential area, with no ugly signage, we want to have a town

plan that reflects the values of our community and most importantly we want to have a say in the council decisions that affect us.

All of these features have been expressed by so many who live here Which option will give us the greater certainty of this? There is no doubt in my mind that our future rests with the northern end of the Sunshine Coast – sharing our communities of interest with our Noosa cousins If you share my conviction then I urge you to stand up and join the Freedom Fighters to free Noosa.

Make your views known so that we can retain the character and amenity of this beautiful part of the world, retain our strong community spirit and enhance our ability to have a strong say in what decisions are made about where we live. W must vote with our feet to become part of the new Noosa Council.

Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington has called on Federal politicians to join in partnership with the state government to fight the Asian Honey Bee pest which he says has the capacity to devastate national food production. Peter maintains that a partnership is needed to avert a potential major disaster in Queensland, and has asked that funding be put toward the matter in the state budget.

New Facebook and Twitter accounts for students were launched as part of the Human Services Portfolio’s celebration of National Youth Week. The launch of specially designed accounts will allow students access to upto-date Centrelink and Medicare information. Eumundi community bus weekly services – New! New! New! ECCO is pleased to be trialling not one but two NEW services.

Need to go to the “little” shops or just for an outing? Starting on Thursday 5 May 2011, a trial Eumundi community bus weekly service will complement the “big shops” outing in the morning. The bus will leave from the town bus stop outside Discover Eumundi Heritage & Visitors Centre at 1pm on Thursdays and terminate at the bus stop in Cooroy outside the IGA. The return will leave the same bus stop at 3.30pm.

Want to go to the Markets but can never find a park? Starting on Saturday, 7 May 2011, a trial Eumundi community bus service will leave from the bus stop outside IGA in Cooroy at 8.15am for the bus stop in Eumundi and will return at 10.30am. A complementary service will leave from the bus stop in Yandina at 9.15am for the bus stop in Eumundi returning at 11.30am.

The vexed issue of market day parking ECCO recognises that it has a clear responsibility to manage the car parks under its lease with Council. It is enabled by its constitution to undertake a wide range of other actions. However, it is not automatically responsible for providing traffic management, overflow parking or transport of people to and from overflow parking areas. These are responsibilities which it may or may not choose to take on. There is an on-going and growing issue with parking in Eumundi every day but particularly on market days. This needs a workable solution. And so ECCO is offering to partner other stakeholders in a bold attempt to address the vexed issue of parking in Eumundi on market days. We are asking the Eumundi Markets Operators Group (EMOG) and all stallholders to become part of the solution. The outcome we are aiming for is a happy shopping experience for each and every visitor to our town and respect for the local community. EMOG is being asked to arrange effective control of traffic management particularly on Napier Road.

ECCO is encouraging stallholders: ➟ to park in the dead-end roadways beyond Strawberry Fields, John Street (just east through the railway underpass on the by-pass) and in Strong Lane on the western side of the Bruce Highway opposite the Eumundi Winery. ➟NOT to use any parking within the town precinct but to make this parking available to customers of the markets.

We are aware that some stallholders use their vehicles as on-site storage and will not be able to co-operate easily. A voluntary solution will cater for this need where any change may disadvantage this small group. As its contribution to the solution, ECCO will provide transportation to and from the nominated overflow parking sites at times agreed with EMOG and provide traffic management there. If take up is significant (and we hope it will be), ECCO will hire the appropriate size coach to meet the urgency of the incoming demand at around 5am to ensure that stallholders return to their stalls in the shortest time possible.

Our wonderful volunteers ECCO is enormously proud of its “vollies.” The volunteer groups which fulfill the role as “front-of house” ambassadors for Eumundi, at the same time, are earning valuable money to sustain the objectives of their favourite community group. They are living proof of the underpinning principle of a “hand-up” rather than a “hand-out.” They are integral to the thinking which led Eumundi as a community to seek the lease to operate the Council-owned car parks on market days and to stimulate the Eumundi and district micro-economy.

So when one of our “vollie” groups has something to celebrate, ECCO celebrates with them as a partner in their joy. Our prime asset: our best intentions The ECCO Board initiated discussions with officers of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council shortly after the board was elected in September 2010. These discussions related to developing solutions to the problem of flooding of the two Council-owned, ECCO-operated car parks adjacent to Napier Road and in-kind support which Council might be able to provide for remediation. Those discussions are ongoing.

Simultaneously, other discussions were also held with the owners of and agents for the proposed golf course east of the rail line who share much the same difficulties as ECCO for flood management. We intend to partner them in implementing the final solution.

ECCO is also seeking additional off-road all-weather parking and will consider offering a complementary shuttle bus service to users. This solution would best suit use by stallholders so as to free all car parking in the CBD area for short term parking by visitors and local residents and enable us to guarantee an appropriate level of transport to and from the Markets. We seek their respect for our town and their co-operation in solving a common problem. Currently, Strawberry Fields is subject to becoming sodden in very wet weather.

The ECCO-operated car parks are the lowest point within the Eumundi township area and are the end point for all runoff from the CBD and the northern end of the township. In addition, the Napier Rd/Albert St car park is almost flat. There is very little fall by which to drain excess water finally into the river with a significant number of obstacles to this flow all of which are beyond ECCO’s control. Major rainfall events which have been all too common over the past record year of rainfall regularly inundate the site and leave it sodden.

ECCO also commissioned its own engineer’s report in December 2010; that report was received very recently. The Board is considering it together with the engineer and will progressively implement proven solutions consistent with prudent financial management. We expect progressively to minimise the worst aspects of our common predicament to the advantage of all stakeholders in Eumundi. There is simply no single easy solution. However, the Board has received endorsement of its recommendation to its three Members, the Chamber of Commerce, EDCA and EHA, that remediation of the car parks be its priority for 2011/2012 following the extreme weather of the last summer.

elebrating Easter included a host of local activities and bumper market days. The Easter bonnet party and parade was a high spot for Eumundi State School. Scott Hardy celebrated a birthday with his nephew close by at the Imperial Hotel. Kalyb and Harry were somewhat oblivious to the importance of the win at the annual Good Friday cricket match by the Imperial Hotel over Joe’s Waterhole. Imogen Beardsley dressed a hat to be part of the Easter markets fun while Louisa Raven and Anthea Nasteski at Cocoa Chocolat won a $50 voucher awarded by the Original Eumundi Markets for the best hats by Memorial Dr traders.

s it just me or am I the only stall holder who wonders why we sign an agreement with the Market undertaking that we will trade to 1.30pm on Wednesdays and 2pm on Saturdays and our cars are not allowed in until after this time. Yet every week we see stalls being packed up early and cars come flying in around 1pm on both days, even when the market is full of customers. If anything sends a negative, disinterested message to our customers, this is it.

The sight of stall holders preparing to pack up and switching off marketing their wares is enough to signal to customers that the market is over. I don’t know about you, but I would really like the opportunity to run my business until these closing times and even later on really special and busy days such as Easter, and school holidays etc.

“Must be pack up time by now!” as early sometimes as 12noon.

I have even been up to the food area at 1pm to buy certain party foods for a weekend BBQ, only to find stalls that I wanted to buy food from packed up and half out of the market.

So can someone please tell me why we have these rules and regulations when they are blatantly ignored and no-one cares to enforce them for at least the safety of and in the best interests of our customers?

This also applies to all the market operators, some of whom advertise differing trading times.

If you are not happy being a stall holder in this wonderful market and appreciate the great opportunity you have to run your business in this beautiful location, then maybe it is time for you pack up permanently.

A native of the French Pyrenees, Jean Luc was a chef and was instrumental in setting up the traditional French cheese farm at Gympie.

Your Say Showgrounds for backpackers?

In recent times there have been many backpackers camping in their campervans around Eumundi.

It can be good for this area to promote these travellers. Why are they here? There is a lot of horticultural work available in this area. They certainly buy locally.

Now backpackers at Noosa are generally not encouraged to sleep in their campervans. If they camp overnight, they are harassed, there is very little entertainment for that age group, and the local

“nanny” residents just do not like any noise and just prefer to stay at home.

Why not open the Eumundi Showgrounds for these backpackers as well as RV travellers?

This stretch of road is a 60kph zone and while I appreciate that a lot of the traffic on this road is not Eumundi locals, I ask readers to slow down. I have been abused, honked at and nearly been in several accidents.

For a car coming out of Wilkes Lane, there is poor visibility due to the bend in the road. If cars are doing the speed limit of 60kph it would give us more time and make this morning venture a much safer one.

ANZAC Day reflections "This ANZAC Day I have been thinking about Australia's current military engagement in Afghanistan. Since 2002, 23 young soldiers have died, leaving behind yet again, as with those first ANZACs, wives and children, grieving parents, sisters and brothers, and friends. Several of these soldiers died from IED blasts, improvised explosive devices. This is not a traditional war, nor a traditional battle ground, and the job is all the harder for its continuous stress and being fought so close to civilians.

Australia has decided that our soldiers should be in this fight to protect against the expansion of terrorism onto our shores, still so blessedly free of this horror. We take for granted so many of the blessings of democracy, including the right to free speech and the right to vote for our governments. Just now we are seeing the peoples of countries in the Middle East fighting for these precious rights, and at the same time people having to flee their homes and villages to escape the fighting.

I hope that as a consequence of our ANZAC Day reflections, we as a nation adopt a kinder, gentler attitude towards refugees who find their way to our shores, for we could so easily be in their shoes without the soldiers of the past and the present going to war against anti-democratic forces which have emerged throughout our history."

Mothers Day Super Concert There’s great entertainment for Mothers Day this Sunday week.

If you’re thinking about a nice leisurely lunch or dinner with the family, don’t forget to include the 2pm Mothers Day Super Concert at The Indee.

Over the six years of its running there have been some mighty shows with major headliners such as Dale Pengelly and Elizabeth Hood and we’re thrilled to announce that Elizabeth is back to top this year’s bill.

Moonlight and Magnolias Moonlight and Magnolias will be opening at The Indee on Friday 27 May for two weekends. Already there have been bookings from right across the Coast for this hit comedy having its Sunshine Coast premiere season. We’re indeed fortunate to have Brett Klease, Wayne Clark, Luke Lanham and Marcia Essers to fill the roles and Carol Burns to direct.

Moonlight and Magnolias is a comedy based on fact. It’s the story of the frantic re-writing of the script of Gone with the Wind, after producer David O Selznick shut down production after just three weeks of shooting, because the rushes were so bad. ina Cooper Gallery at the top end of Eumundi recently hosted a TV crew from Channel 10’s Totally Wild program in response to an approach from the channel interested in glass blowing and Tina’s life passion.

Tina called together her network of talented glass artisans who practise their different glass making skills at her gallery. This enabled a full day of shooting for a program that will be aired in 8-12 weeks time.

Featured in the footage was Wolfgang Engel, the only glass pen maker in Australia and master of the “Lamp Work” glass making

technique. Wolfgang created an exquisite pen for the TV audience.

Carmel White, an accomplished glass bead maker and jewellery maker, also demonstrated her skills to the awe of the producers and crew.

Peter Mulcahy, an accomplished Aboriginal painter, was also in attendance demonstrating how he decorates some of Tina’s large glass vases for her “Outback” series.

Unfortunately, Tina couldn’t demonstrate her amazing glass blowing skills due to the recent demise of the Sunshine Coast Hot Glass Studio in Yandina.

The painting of stolen generation member Bob Randall depicts a parallel of Bob today and Bob with his mother in their country long ago. Jandamarra is a valued member of the team at Eumundi’s Reliance Maintenance and Landscaping and has exhibited his art at Eumundi’s Art Bank.

LEST WE FORGET EDCA was privileged to be associated with last Monday's moving Eumundi ANZAC Day community walk and service through the laying of a wreath to honour the fallen in WWI at the memorial tree for Pte A M McIntyre, through funding support for the breakfast BBQ and through members work towards the day led by vice president Cherrie Orr. Our town has a proud history with its tree memorials, the naming of the main street and the archiving of important items honouring the sacrifice of our armed forces at Discover Eumundi. Celebrate Food Thai New Year celebrations in Eumundi Sue Campin

T

he Thai New Year celebratory festival is an annual highlight of the year and is called Songkran, the water festival. This year Jang and John Etheridge of Sala Thai treated Eumundi to the delights of Songkran at their restaurant.

Although the Thai people officially changed the New Year to 1 January in 1940, the traditional Songkran Festival is still celebrated on 13 April as a national holiday each year.

More than 120 people shared a delicious meal and a cultural

presentation of Thailand.

The evening included delightful explanations from Jang on the meaning of the ceremonies we saw and participated in. The highlights of the night were the water blessing of six community seniors and a fashion parade of traditional and modern Thai dress by beautiful ladies and adorable children.

In Thailand early on 13 April, young and old dress in new clothes and gather at the monastery belonging to their village or district (known as the Wat) to offer food to the monks and in return receive New Year blessings. In the afternoon, Buddha images are bathed as part of the Songkran ceremonies. Special religious ceremonies are held during the festival in sacred memory of the dead.

There is also much game playing and building of sand pyramids with tiny coloured flags on the riverbanks. Birds are released from cages and fish are released from bowls to receive blessings, luck and longevity. Young people pour scented water into the hands of elders and parents as a mark of respect while seeking the blessings of the older people.

Jang explained the joy she felt in being part of the Eumundi community and her pride in sharing

her culture with everyone on the night. The atmosphere was one of a close and caring community, respectful and embracing of the many cultures and experiences that make the Eumundi lifestyle so special.

The celebration of Songkran in Eumundi has been on Jang’s mind for a few years now and the success of the evening has set the scene hopefully for Songkran in Eumundi in 2012.

The following recipes have been provided by Jang Etheridge of Sala Thai.

Like all good Thai recipes some ingredients have no measurements. It’s up to the cook to practise and create the balance of flavours enjoyed by particular families and friends.

Sala Thai Noodle Salad

Ingredients Carrots julienned Thinly sliced cabbage Thinly sliced onion Thinly sliced shallots Bean sprouts Coriander chopped roughly Cooked glass noodles (250g suggested) Minced chicken already cooked and cooled (110g suggested) Method Mix the noodles, chicken and other salad ingredients in a bowl.

Dressing Lime juice Fish sauce Raw sugar Chopped chilli Method To make the dressing heat a small amount of water and the raw sugar for two minutes until the sugar is melted. Cool this mixture to room temperature. Add chopped chilli, lime juice and fish sauce and stir for about 1 minute.

Add the dressing to the salad and toss thoroughly.

Sala Thai Papaya Salad Ingredients Grated small green paw paw Grated carrots Handful grated green beans 1-2 cloves garlic Tomatoes Chilli Lime juice Fish sauce Palm sugar Peanuts

Method Mash chilli and garlic in mortar.

Mix grated paw paw, carrot and green beans together in a bowl and mix in the mashed mortar mix.

Add diced tomato, lime juice, palm sugar and fish sauce.

Place in a serving bowl and sprinkle with slightly crushed peanuts.

But why is your mouth starting to hate you? Red and swollen tender gums, increase in bleeding when brushing, and weird lumps appear.

Talk about taking the good news with the bad. Known as pregnancy gingivitis, this unpleasant condition, affecting 50 to 75 per cent of all expectant mothers, is often blamed on hormonal changes found in pregnant women. But it is not the hormones that are the culprits, but hormones responding to billions of bacteria living in your mouth. The scary thing is, growing evidence links gum infections with increased risk of premature and underweight births.

Fortunately, with the right care you can prevent this.  Follow a healthy diet. You can start caring for your baby’s teeth as soon as you find out you’re pregnant. Your baby’s teeth begin to develop between the third and sixth months, so it is important that you receive sufficient nutrients and limit sweets and carbs to avoid cavities!  Visit the dentist for a clean and a thorough check. This may help prevent most gum and dental

problems. Be sure to tell the dentist that you’re pregnant, or you suspect you might be.  If you are diagnosed with tooth or gum problems ideally try postponing treatment to the second trimester. Don’t put it off though; these dental treatments should be done to reduce the chance of painful infection. Once you reach the third trimester, it may be very difficult to lie on your back for an extended period of time. Ask your dentist if routine x-rays, usually taken during regular exams, can be postponed until after the birth.  Last of all, prevention is better than cure. If you don’t have good dental health, you can transmit organisms known as streptococci to your baby and these organisms are responsible for causing tooth decay, so if you have dental disease and you put your baby’s spoon or dummy into your mouth and then back into theirs … Yuck!

Research has shown that brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day to disrupt bacteria growth between your teeth, helps to control or prevent disease. If you notice bleeding, painful swollen gums or lumps, see your dentist.

In the Spotlight A day in the life of a Eumundi mum Fran Maguire

W

hen I arrive at Gridley Homestead at the northern end of Eumundi, Sandy Page is full of happy energy as she cleans the windows ready for a full house of weekend guests.

Some of us might wonder at the wisdom of a working mother of two small children taking on running a B&B, but Sandy says the arrangement is ideal for her, partner Damien Ryan and children, Sophia, 6, and Finlay, 3.

Moving into the graceful Queenslander that is Gridley Homestead has been the completion of a circle for Sandy.

Her origins are in Nambour and her parents, who were cane farmers and owned the cane farm along Memorial Dr, still live at Dunethin.

She says when they viewed the house she had tears in her eyes.

“I looked from the back verandah across the fields and said ‘That’s mum and dad’s farm’.

“I’m as close to home as I could be, almost at mum and dad’s house.”

Sandy left the Sunshine Coast as soon as she could, first for Brisbane, then later overseas for three years, which included teaching in Britain.

On a trip home she met Damien and they set off overseas together

for three more years working and travelling, Sophia and Finlay arrived following their return.

“When you have kids it puts life in perspective,” Sandy says. “Our extended family and roots are here; that’s all so important.”

So what about the wisdom of living on the job in a B&B with a young family?

“Before we came here Damien was working more than 50 hours a week as head chef at the Spirit House and I didn’t want to continue working full-time as a teacher,” Sandy says.

She now works one day a week teaching at Matthew Flinders College, an outlet she finds important when working so close to family.

“It’s not hard to mix time with children working at home – if a guest needs me I can pop out from being with the kids and then back to top up the love tank!

“It’s been a great move for us, to live in this beautiful property and not to have to work full time.

“I love old Queenslanders and being among the energy of the families that have lived here.”

Sandy says Eumundi is a great town for kids.

“They can ride their bikes, we take the dog for a walk and we’ve made great friends.

“We’d never have had all of that in a bigger town.”

Sandy and her family support community events whenever they can.

“That’s important – if you want things like the outdoor cinema you have to support them.

“Our kids will love the Body Art Carnivale. It’s great to be able to expose them to art and music, the markets; it all makes them more rounded.”

Sandy is a recently appointed director on the inaugural board of

the Eumundi Historical Foundation (EHF), a community organisation that’s important to her.

“My kids love Discover Eumundi and I want to make sure we hold on to that. It’s so important it continues and ensures local schools have that resource.

“One of my passions is that, and history being done well in the national curriculum.”

They are safe hands then for our heritage, the busy ones of educator, B&B owner and mum, Sandy Page.

y mum is a real stickler for breakfast. Our everyday breakfast is always enormous..... fruit, weetbix, eggs, yoghurt. If my mum would stay long enough in bed, I would make her an omelette with juice and fruit with “push down” coffee.

My omelette is very simple and probably just like everyone else’s but this is what I do: Ingredients 2 eggs pinch parsley shake of thyme and marjoram black pepper grated carrot, zucchini, sliced

mushrooms, onion and chopped tomato dob of butter.

Method Separate egg whites from yolks.

Beat yolks, add parsley, thyme, marjoram and pepper.

Beat egg whites till very stiff.

Add vegies and mix all together.

Heat an omelette pan slowly and melt butter.

Pour in the mixture and allow it to set over a gentle heat.

Turn very carefully and brown on the other side.

Serve with fresh juice, toast and coffee.

Heliconias

There are so many wonderful heliconias which are versatile and lend themselves to landscaping, from the dwarf Jamaican which grows 75cm to Hot Rio Nights which grows up to 5m and many others in between.

Psittacorums which are a member of the heliconia family, grow from 1.5–2m and produce gorgeous coloured flowers which are great for floral displays in the house. Cut flowers last for up to four weeks.

Rostrata is another terrific landscaping heliconia which is often referred to as Parrot's Beak.

Red Holiday also known as Red Xmas is great for pots as it only grows 1.2m.

Its striking red and white flowers in winter are a welcome warmth of colour at this time of year.

Yellow Xmas grows up to 2m and flowers a little later than Red Xmas.

Most heliconias appreciate full sun to a part-shaded position and are helpful in creating a tropical theme in the garden.

Call for Council to reject piggery application

A

petition with over 200 signatures of Mary Valley residents has been presented to Gympie Regional Council urging Council to reject an application for a free-range piggery in the range of 400 standards pig units (approximately 558 pigs) proposed for Sterling Rd, Upper Kandanga.

Lizette Phillips, a resident representing the local community said, “The piggery proposal on the 53ha property does not meet a number of the conditions of Council’s intensive animal industry code including separation buffers required from neighbours, waterways like Mitchell Creek and Kandanga Creek, and protecting ecologically significant areas.

“Not all neighbouring homes were included in the initial application. The separation buffer for a dwelling on surrounding

property required by the council assessment criteria is 500m and the size of the site is to be not less that 100ha.

“The closest neighbour is about 22m and was not included in the initial application. Three other neighbours are all within a 500m radius of the proposed site. ” Save the Mary River Coordinating Group president Glenda Pickersgill also expressed concerns about the risk of contamination from surface runoff entering Mitchell and Kandanga Creeks, recently mapped by state government as wetland management areas.

“The application has not even acknowledged Mitchell Creek as a waterway despite it being identified on the Gympie Council Overlay map and the separation buffers are not able to be met,” she said.

ealth-conscious Australians may soon be swapping lettuce for watercress.

Mounting evidence shows watercress may combat certain types of cancer and food scientists at the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation are determined to find the most nutritious methods of preparing and cooking the leaves.

The cancer-fighting capability of watercress, a member of the brassica family, is due to the high levels of phytochemicals known as isothiocyanates (ITCs). These are the same disease-fighting components found in broccoli and cabbage.

Watercress has had a place on tables in Asia and Europe for

centuries. Even Socrates was convinced of the health promoting abilities of the vegetable. He built his first hospital next to natural springs growing watercress so he could easily reap the benefits of this potent food. “As a fresh salad vegetable it is cool when first experienced and then hot when chewed,” he said.

he humble sweet potato is getting a makeover with Queensland scientists researching varieties with new colours, tastes and shapes tailored for Queensland growers and consumers alike.

Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) research horticulturist Russell McCrystal said, “The sweet potatoes we are developing are visually exciting with a mix of purple, red, orange and white skin and flesh,” Mr McCrystal said.

“You can buy the purple and white varieties at the supermarket at the moment, but they make up a very small percentage of the market and are only available for a short period each year.

“The new varieties we’re working on are based on these current varieties. They will be of a more consistent shape and will be available year round.

enerally speaking, the Australian bird species with the greatest distribution range are the ones with black and white plumage, with many being found in all parts of our continent. We have seen Willie Wagtails at water holes many days’ drive into the desert and Magpies and Pied Butcherbirds in the northern tropics and at Uluru. Magpie-larks (Peewees) are everywhere as well.

The black and white pattern makes excellent camouflage in our strong sunlight and speckled shade.

On our property, four related species, Grey and Pied Butcherbirds, Magpies and Currawongs are always present, hunting for worms and insects on the lawn or raiding our few fruit trees.

The Butcherbirds are the greatest characters. We hear the grey ones (Cracticus torquatus) in the trees on the eastern side while the black-and-white (Pied) ones (Cracticus nigrogularis) frequent the western side. They rarely trespass on each other’s territory but when they do it results in a raucous squabble. Yet both species delight us with melodious singing with unsurpassed clarity of

tone. Maybe the Pied Butcherbird has a slightly greater repertoire.

Common ground is our lawn and back patio at breakfast time. We watch them as they collect spiders off our sliding door channels and hunt insects on the lawn and in flight. Again, the Pied Butcherbirds seem to be more aggressive and definitely more aerobatic. When, to our disgust, they spear a small lizard, they live up to their name and hang their catch on a twig for future consumption, just like butchers hang meat in a coldroom. They don’t seem to raid each other’s larder.

Butcherbirds are smaller than their cousins the Magpies and have strong beaks with a sharp hook on the end. Nesting takes place in late winter and the young ones have a brownish colour until they mature.

The two species are most easily told apart, not by their overall colouring (that can look alike depending on the light) but by looking at the throat feathers. The Pied Butcherbird’s are jet-black whereas the Grey’s throats are white. In fact the Pied’s specific name, nigrogularis, means blackthroated.

umundi Photo Club members selected Kevin Bridger’s photo of his brother’s family dog Maddy at Humpty Doo in the NT for their April theme “Having Fun”. They thought Maddy certainly was, though they weren’t sure about the toy! Kevin took his photo using a Nikon D300 with lens AF Nikkor 18-200mm f3.5-5.6G at 1/50 f5.6, ISO400 and spot metering.

Alain Bouvier showed members the slide show he presented at the recent Pecha Kucha Night at Nambour with the theme Love, Life, Loss. Alain also talked about his submission to the ABC Open project to photograph a stranger and, as a follow-on, the club’s May

theme is “Portrait of a Stranger”.

Anyone can submit work to the ABC Open project and more information can be found at www.open.abc. net.au.

Members are invited to suggest photographic topics for future meetings so they can share learning and experience.

Body Art Carnivale history The inaugural Australian Body Art Carnivale of 2007 was 15 months of planning, 35 volunteers and 30 artists… with one huge storm that caused flooding and closed roads the day before the opening! The Eumundi catch phrase of “come rain, hail or shine, we are open and operating,” still prevailed! Some events had to be modified but artists from all over the country converged and “live” canvasses came alive as works of art. There was even a masked ball!

In 2008 the Carnivale expanded to incorporate wearable art which added vibrancy and creativity aplenty with recycled materials.

The 2010 program started off with a gallery walk on the Friday night and had additional categories of vehicle art and pavement art. With plenty of entertainment and a street party in between it was deemed a great success as this year is shaping up to be.

ecently we visited our daughter who lives up in the Hollywood Hills, overlooking down-town LA and adjacent to Griffith Park, LA’s city parklands.

Griffith Park is huge – at 4210 acres in area it is close on three times London’s Hyde Park and New York’s Central Park put together. But it is very different, and apart from a few notable structures could be described as a wilderness area. No manicured lawns here – the steep terrain consists of wide and deep canyons, the slopes covered in an impenetrable hard scrub community collectively called chaparral. One of the plants has bright red berries (holly berry) after which the Hollywood area is named.

The bottom edges of the park contain a golf course, an immense children’s play area and the LA Zoo. Wide, well-maintained tracks skirt the canyons and lead upslope to the major features, the most recognised of which is the famous Hollywood sign with its 15 metre high letters erected in 1923 by some clever real estate people.

We were impressed by how well the compressed gravel tracks were used by hundreds of walkers mainly heading up to the LA Observatory, a major LA landmark opened in 1935. It provides extensive views of the city below.

The observatory was seriously threatened by a wildfire in 2007, which was particularly intense due to the stands of Australian Blue

Horse riders also use the tracks while cars and other vehicles are not permitted but have access to the observatory by sealed road.

We are always looking for critters and noted that Griffith Park is home to many species of birds, including woodpeckers and condors, but our favourites were the flocks of tiny humming birds, no bigger than cicadas, which have adapted to feeding on nectar from the many Eucalypts. They are much too small and quick to photograph with our point-andclick. Also present are squirrels, bobcats, raccoons, mule deer and skunks. Coyotes are everywhere when you haven’t got your camera and a sign in the park warns of some more dangerous inhabitants – rattlesnakes and mountain lions.

And it wouldn’t be Hollywood if there wasn’t a film shoot happening in the park somewhere.

But best of all is the coffee shop at the end of the tracks, one of the very few in LA who know how to make a good cappuccino.

his week I was all excited to tell you more about the iPad, how you can use it, and some of the great apps you might like to take a look at. But I’ve decided to cover something else because of the volume of calls I’m getting about it this past month, so we’ll talk more about the iPad next fortnight.

Some time ago I mentioned the Windows Support Centre scam, where a technician rings you and claims to be from the support centre, allowing you to believe they are from Microsoft (they don’t specifically say “Microsoft”).

They remotely access your PC and claim to repair it and charge you anything from $150 to $200 for it. This scam, and variations of it, seems to be on the rise on the Sunshine Coast as I am getting

half a dozen calls a week from people who have been called or who have given their credit card details away. Remember, nobody should ever be cold calling you to fix your PC and you should never give anyone you don’t know remote access to your PC. Not even your ISP (Bigpond, Optus etc) will do this. If you have been scammed, there is not much you can do. The scammers are usually pretty careful about what they say, so in effect what you do agree to in the end is for a technician to remotely access your PC and do some “support”. If you are still unsure, take their number and ring a reputable IT Technician for advice.

D

arran and I spent a gorgeous week in March on the Pacific Dawn with two of our great friends Cory and Leanne Elliot from Brisbane. As well as the great entertainment on board we enjoyed stops at Noumea, Lifou and Vila.

We got married in Vila with Leanne and Cory as our bridesmaid and best man, so it was lovely to visit again. I also loved Lifou – a beautiful unspoilt island that oozes tropical charm.

We were lucky to have some beautiful days and calm seas the whole way and we spent lots of time soaking up the tranquillity as well as enjoying the nightlife!

I even managed to squeeze in a few minutes on the top deck to catch up on the local news in the Eumundi Green.

The trip was a much needed break that recharged our batteries ready for all the excitement of the Australian Body Art Carnivale coming up from 13 to 15 May!
