victim to the great clearing epidemic some time in the past and there are still stumps of huge trees in many locations. It’s still a comparatively heavily treed area though and shelters a great variety of wildlife, particularly the dreaded brush turkey! Creek Drive and the adjacent streets are very popular with walkers and dog owners as there is little traffic and a few steep hills to tackle. Great for getting fit and exercising Rover, but please keep him on a lead (and don’t forget to bring the doggy bag).

Community News Well done Francesca

Grease – the one that you want!

A

I would like to thank the residents of Eumundi and district for being so patient with the works that have been carried out at the intersection of Memorial Dr and Caplick Way. Whilst the work has suffered greatly from severe weather challenges it is but a little behind schedule and will soon be finished. The work that has been done by the workers will soon look fantastic and be pedestrian friendly when the refuges are in place but really the main work was in the preparation and drainage of a particularly challenging intersection. Special thanks goes to Joel Coates and Chris Sturgess from Sunshine Coast Council for their continued working with the community in achieving the best outcome for the community. The community had expressed quite clear views about the need to take into account pedestrian traffic needs especially school children and to balance that with vehicular needs and the need for a look and feel that matched Eumundi's green ethos. Thanks also goes to the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce and their President Barrie Adams for its leadership and support during the construction period. We ask for a continuation of that support as we resolve any teething problems with the intersection. My best wishes for improved conditions over winter which I know is an important trading period for many Eumundi businesses. Best wishes too to everyone at this weekend's Australian Body Art Carnivale.

Verrierdale Community News Congratulations Joe and Fay From the Treetops Cher and Ed Boyd Verrierdale

Fay and Joe Rimmington celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently with an afternoon tea at the Verrierdale hall with around 60 family and close friends including their best man and maid of honour.

Changing of the guard

V

errierdale Community Group has a new president, David Fingleton, who has taken on the role from outgoing president Doug Page. David, a resident of Verrierdale, said he feels a strong connection with the hall not only from having lived in the area for nearly a decade, but also because of his wife Sue’s (nee Rimmington), heritage. Sue’s parents, Joe and Fay Rimmington, and her grandparents, Frank and Esme Butler, helped build the hall. “I am looking forward to my role as president,” David said, “but I can’t do the job alone. If anyone

in the community would like to help the committee in any way by volunteering their time and skills, I would appreciate it. My email address is fingers303@bigpond. com, or phone me on 5471 0220.” Outgoing president Doug Page and his wife Donata have spent the past seven years serving the group. “I am happy to have someone such as David, with new energy, taking on the role of president,” Doug said. “The outgoing committee is pleased to be handing the hall in a refurbished condition over to the new committee.”

s it twelve months already? Our amazing Australian Body Art Carnivale is back again. Last year we decided to volunteer as helpers for we had experienced previous carnivales and thought it a great thing for Eumundi as well as just a fun time. Our roles were established as the ones to co-ordinate the People’s Choice Awards. This meant we were involved with a variety of activities: Body Art, Pavement Art, Wearable Art, Photography and Vehicle Art were all part of the two days. It also meant that we had a strong interaction with the interested public. We spent the time answering many questions and fielding comments about how great, surprising and different it all was. Over the time we met hundreds of people who were exposed to a different face of Eumundi and all thought it a fantastic

experience. While it was busy, we were energised by the fun and involvement with the whole carnivale. As the days wore on we were able to peep over our shoulders and watch the various art forms slowly grow. Colours and designs transformed people, footpaths and vehicles into so many concepts of “fantasy”. That probably was the best part, being able to see the complete development of the characters that appeared for their final presentations. We stayed around and were stunned at the numbers who joined in all events after the competitions. It seems we weren’t the only ones who thought this was a great idea for Eumundi. So yes, here we go again! We can only say, get involved; join in the activities, enjoy the competitions, parades, music and food – it will be worth the time!

Love or detest something? This is your chance to shout it from the treetops. Send up to 300 words to editor@eumundigreen.com.au

Your Say Eumundi perpetuates ANZAC remembrance I understand EHA is the driving force behind arrangements for staging this year’s ANZAC day event at Eumundi. Following a ten year absence from residing at Eumundi, I attended this year’s event and write to thank and congratulate all concerned. The entire morning was an occasion to be proud of. Having previously attended overseas, interstate and Brisbane events I can now be very proud that our little township has the resources and ability to perpetuate remembrance of men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending the freedom and living standards we enjoy today. Contributions made by volunteers to organise and conduct the commemoration immediately come to mind and no doubt there are other supporters and sponsors who can be assured of the sincere thanks I wish to convey. Alecia Downie Eumundi Uplifting Eumundi commemoration I would like to say thanks to Cherrie Orr, and her ANZAC Day committee for the solemn but uplifting service. We are indeed blessed to have such folk in our community as Air Marshal Geoff Shepherd, whose inspiring and thought provoking address was clear and succinct. The singing was first class, thanks to Melissa Isles and the Noosa Chorale, and the last post was hauntingly played by Ross Lancaster. The unsung heroes are always to be relied upon and are indeed worthy of thanks, for example the Eumundi firies and the tennis club and the financial sponsors. It is indeed wonderful to see our service attended by so many children who share in our growth and opportunity. With individual touches which are purely Eumundi, I believe we have a heartfelt and respectful celebration of what was and what is. Susie Lefevre, MC What happened to Tree Feller statue? I was so ashamed and saddened to see the statue in Eumundi. Do we know who did it? Do we know what is happening with regard to it being fixed? Centre: A local sculptor who did some repair work on the statue seven years ago assessed the damage from recent vandalism and felt it was not economically viable to do another repair job on it. The insurance payout is not enough to replace it but funding is being sought to redevelop the front of the building which will include replacing this iconic image in some way. In the meantime, a wooden crate will be built over the statue with an interpretive panel showing the history of the statue and a sign to watch this space for updates. North Arm School and Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation North Arm State School is proudly involved in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation. We are one of only three schools on the Sunshine Coast to have this wonderful program available for the children at our school. The fundamental philosophy that underpins the program is that by setting good examples and engaging children’s innate curiosity, as well as their energy and their taste buds, we can provide positive and memorable food experiences that will form the basis of positive lifelong eating habits. The program offers the kids a hands-on approach to growing, cooking and sharing. The benefits of the program extend in many areas. We would love to share our journey with the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Program with our community, so community members can offer their support by volunteering their time or assisting with donations of equipment required. Eumundi Family Medical Centre is up and running this week heralding a new era of quality community health care in Eumundi. Highly-skilled staff members, GP Dr Carlos Sanchez, Practice Manager and Practice Nurse, Suzie Dempsey and part-time Practice Nurse, Wendy Turner, will soon be joined by a trainee health administrator who will study under the auspices of the Sunshine Coast Division of General Practice. The ECCO Board has empowered the staff to provide consistent quality patient care and to work with other health professionals to restore the GP service and nurture and develop allied health care in our town. Well-known Eumundi identity, Bob Mitchell, was in the Centre as soon as appointments opened to book a first day appointment with Suzie Dempsey for Dr Sanchez. Bob said he was very pleased the GP service had been restored to the town. "I am certain it will be a great boost for the community and for the business life of Eumundi," said Bob. The Oriana Choir was featured in Eumundi Green last year highlighting the dedication of the choir and its supporters. Their focus was to raise funds for an ambitious overseas concert tour of Belgium, England, France and Wales, the highlight of which will undoubtedly be a performance at St Paul's Cathedral in London. We share their joy at their special achievement at Easter 2011 in winning seven out of the nine first places available at the annual Heritage Queensland Eisteddfod. This 118 year old festival of music attracts choirs from all over South East Queensland and Oriana was declared Champion Choir for the second time in its only five years of competing. Proud trophy winners, seven in a weekend. Just as the Australian Body Art Carnivale organising committee was about to launch its major fundraising drive for this year's Carnivale, the natural disasters which befell Queensland in the early months of 2011 took place. Out of respect for the state and national fund-raising for victims of these terrible events, major Body Art fundraising was suspended. Plan B has been community heroes, including already very busy members of the organising committee and other committees, stepping up and becoming volunteer car park attendants to supplement the revenues. Well done; ECCO salutes you! Volunteer Wendy Gill getting ready to open the gates for parking. We welcome competitors and visitors to our Australian Body Art Carnivale from one of the event's proud sponsors!

Arts Scene William Wallace as Motel with Summer Bowen as Tzeital in Fiddler on The The Noosa Longweekend Festival Indee Theatre Roof at Noosa Arts Theatre. News John Burls

I

’ve heard people say “Oh we never go to amateur theatre. We only ever go to see professional productions”. Yet many a professional actor has said the only difference between pro theatre and a top standard amateur company is that the pro actors get paid. A good example of this is the forthcoming production about the writing of the screenplay Gone with the Wind, titled Moonlight and Magnolias, opening in two weeks time at The indee. The standard is exceedingly high, with professional director Carol Burns getting the utmost out of three of the best actors on the Coast. The script is in the upper echelon and the whole production has a well-polished feel. We’re calling it the platinum season. Realising that self praise is no recommendation, I’d like you to take the test. If you don’t see any other live theatre this year – see this one and you be the judge. Moonlight and Magnolias is set over five days, when three of Hollywood’s top film makers were locked in an office trying to rewrite the screenplay of Gone With the Wind. Based on fact, it tells how producer David O Selznick closed down filming after three weeks,

because his huge investment in the movie looked like failing horribly. With fifty actors in supporting roles, four in major roles and over two thousand extras, it was costing $50,000 a day to have them sit idle while the rewrite took place. This very funny play is on at 7.30pm Friday and Saturday 27 and 28 May, and 7.30pm Friday and Saturday 3 and 4 June, plus Sunday 29 May at 2pm and Sunday 5 June at 5pm. Opening night (6.45pm to 7.30pm for drinks and nibbles) tickets all $22. Other nights $22, concessions $18, Sundays $18. Book now 5472 8200.

“This year’s literary and forum events are guaranteed to be provocative, stimulating, compelling and entertaining. “From author readings to observations of Australian culture, to sex, politics, religion and everything in between, if you’re a book lover or like to think outside the square, this year’s festival program is for you.” To view the full program of The Noosa Longweekend Festival events visit www. noosalongweekend.com. Celebrate Food Roadworks recovery party at Food@Eumundi

S

cott and Jessica Hardy of Food@ Eumundi hosted a party for traders and supporters to kick up their heels now the re-construction of the intersection is all but done. There was every expectation that it would be finished completely by now but Mother Nature had other ideas – as she has had all the way through what would have been a challenging construction project even in fine weather. The happy crowd enjoyed stunning canapés, jovial company, excellent service and great music by local Andrew Healey. There was no rain so spirits were upbeat. Scott made a thank you speech for support shown to top end traders by patrons, supporters and Council’s intersection project manager. President of the Chamber of Commerce Barrie Adams said the party was a special milestone. “It will be good to see the pedestrian refuges and signage installed so top end traders can see light at the end of the tunnel. “It has been a particularly rough couple of months for them and for the wider community. “With the improvements and the impetus from the medical centre

re-opening, I believe there’s a good chance of a prosperous winter trading period. “I urge everyone to especially consider the top end traders during this recovery period when making purchasing decisions. “I congratulate Scott and Jess for hosting this celebration and their positive approach to making the most of the opportunities ahead – I wish them and all the traders all the best and assure them of continued support from the Chamber,” Barrie said. Scott and Jess are not letting anything get in their way either when it comes to their proud record of supporting charities. They will be part of this year’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea for the Cancer Council on Thursday 26 May at 10am. Each guest will receive two mini cupcakes with berries and coulis, petite meringue with cream Chantilly and coffee of choice or tea for $15 per person with $3 of that going to the Cancer Council. There will be a lucky door prize and some quiet music. Bookings are essential by Saturday 21 May. Here’s the recipe for one of the canapés served by Scott at the roadworks recovery party:

Remove wrappers from the water and place individually on a clean damp cloth (to stop them sticking). Place a small amount of filling in the centre of each wrapper. Health and Lifestyle Stroke still a leading cause of death

S

troke remains the second leading cause of death in Australia and in 2009 caused almost twice as many deaths as breast and prostate cancer combined, according to new Australian Bureau of Statistics figures released last week. The National Stroke Foundation advises that while it was welcome news that over the last 10 years deaths from stroke had decreased by almost nine per cent, the social, economic and personal burden of this disease remained great, with one in six people likely to suffer

from stroke in their lifetime. A Know your numbers free program will be conducted at Eumundi Village Pharmacy to help locals understand their personal risk of stroke. It offers a free blood pressure and stroke risk check. Staff at the pharmacy invite customers to call any day during the week commencing 16 May and especially to join them at morning tea on Thursday, 19 May at 10am for a community catch up and to meet staff from the recently re-opened Eumundi Family Medical Centre.

Misconceptions about martial arts Si-hing Kim Raddon

Y

ou have to be physically strong and flexible to be good at defending yourself … We have seen martial arts movies containing muscle-bound fighters who smash through defences and execute incredibly difficult jumping, spinning backkicks! That’s fine if you’re an actor or a great athlete, but most of us are just mere mortals. Some martial arts require strength and flexibility, but this

is not the case with Wing Chun. In fact, effectiveness in Wing Chun does not require either strength or flexibility. The use of brute strength goes against the fundamental principles of Wing Chun, which is based on the use of skill. Wing Chun exponents learn to execute force (strike) without brute strength. That means a small person skilled in Wing Chun can learn to effectively defend against a larger, stronger opponent.

Cambroon Bridge closure

I

f you have been stopped in the street recently by a Frenchman asking if he could take your photo, likely it was local Alain Bouvier collecting images for an ABC Open project. Alain, a chef and photographer, has made Eumundi home with partner Alice Johns. Following six years as a chef on land and boats in French Polynesia and New Zealand, Alain fell in love with Australia while working on charter boats out of Hervey Bay. A search for employment sponsorship brought him to the Sunshine Coast. Eumundi seems to have synchronicity for Alain who met Alice, who runs an organic cotton clothing company, in Berkelouw’s Café. When they started to look for a place to set up home together, Alain laughs and says he “won”. The truth is they both found what they wanted in Eumundi. “We really like what we found here; we both have sustainable visions but didn’t think we’d find something sustainable to live in. “But we’ve been very fortunate,” Alain says of their “sustainable house”. “In Eumundi, we’ve really been able to live and eat organically more than in other places.” Alain’s passion for photography started in his student days in Marseille when he worked in film, in black and white. “It was expensive and I had to make a choice; when you’re young you have to drop things and I was trained as a chef.” Pragmatism won until an unfortunate incident gave Alain the opportunity to reignite his passion. “I broke my leg kite-surfing and as I recovered I wondered if I should keep going with it,”

he says. “I was a bit scared and instead of buying new kite equipment I bought a camera and started photography again.” Cameras of course had moved on and Alain soon transferred his knowledge of film into the digital format, and about a year ago decided he would make his living from photography. “I’m passionate about music too,” he says, “and some of my first photographic work was as a contributor to Tsunami magazine. I like to photograph live music and do promo work for musicians, but it’s hard to make a living as a music photographer.” Alain is building a portfolio of business work while his “day job” pays the bills and as a chef, food is a natural photographic genre for him. Alongside his commercial work he enjoys personal projects and finds photography is a good way to express his feelings. Participation in the ABC Open Portrait of a Stranger was a recent project. “I found doing that interesting and constructive,” he says. “I’m a shy person and I realised I had an issue when people say no. Now I can approach people with the camera as a kind of shield, and I learned to be more persuasive.” Alain will be putting that learning and his persuasive skills into practice as a volunteer photographer for Eumundi Green at the Body Art Carnivale. So when you’re at the event this weekend, if Alain asks for a photo be sure to give him your best side and smile. ABC Open is open to everyone and Portrait of a Stranger and other projects can be viewed on www.open.abc.net.au/projects. You can view Alain’s work on his blog www.alainbouvier.wordpress. com.

For expectant and new parents everywhere Q: I’m two months pregnant now. When will my baby move? A: With any luck, right after he finishes school and before he goes to university. Q: What is the most reliable method to determine a baby’s sex? A: Childbirth. Q: My wife is five months pregnant and so moody that sometimes she’s borderline irrational. A: So what’s your question? Q: Do I have to have a baby shower?

fter a long and hot wet season the nutrients in our soils may be leeched to lower levels, away from access for the new winter crops. There are a couple of ways to replace them. One is by adding nutrients to the top. Time to put out the rich compost you have been making from all that summer growth, and maybe some manures. The other is to plant things with extra-long roots to bring

Then you can have a dream season of the European veggies that are hard to grow here through the wet. Next wet season remember to keep your soil well covered with mulch or green manure crops so they do not become leeched. Ms Greenthumbs

Environment and Outdoors Launch of FarmFLOW project

Leanne’s Green Thumb Lovely lavenders Lavenders appreciate full sun. Grow them in shade and they grow out towards the sunlight, and they like a well-drained soil. They don’t like wet feet. They don't need a lot of fertiliser but some dolomite in spring and autumn helps, and add some potassium to intensify the colour and strengthen the stems. These plants develop a good root system, so they don't need too much water. As lavender plants age, bushes can become woody. When pruning it's important to retain the green foliage and don’t cut back into the old wood. The flower spikes of lavender are used for floral arrangements and the pale purple buds are perfect for potpourri. The plant's oils are used as an antiseptic and are now commonly used in aromatherapy. Lavender is a great plant for pots and tubs. You can also use them around the garden as a hedge or mass plant them as a feature. Lavenders are really versatile plants. There are many different lavenders available from French, Spanish, Italian through to the beautiful “Ruffles’” range which we now have available at the Garden Centre. 791 Eumundi-Noosa Rd Doonan

A new road to recycling

S

unshine Coast Council is driving a new approach to utilising old asphalt and gravel road base that was previously trucked into landfills or spoil sites for disposal. Previously unwanted road material is recycled by incorporating it into local gravel and sealed road maintenance and construction operations. Whilst the costs to Council are minimal, there are numerous benefits including keeping concrete and asphalt debris out of landfills, saving landfill space, and

reduction of pollution involved in trucking material from around the Coast to various sites. During the initial stages of pavement failure rectification work, Council’s bobcat profiling machines chop up the defective road base and spit this material out as a rough road gravel base, which is then transported to one of council’s stockpile sites and blended with small amounts of 2.5 grade gravel ready for placement onto roads in hinterland and urban areas in predetermined amounts.

Levy revenue will continue to be allocated to the acquisition of environmentally significant lands, major initiatives and catalyst projects, and community grants, incentives and partnerships. Last financial year, Council acquired 110 hectares for conservation reserves

and has progressed negotiations for acquisition of a further 213 hectares for conservation. In partnership with 10 private landholders, through Voluntary Conservation Agreements, an additional 137 hectares towards biodiversity conservation has been contributed. Nature Notes Bush walks Koala Bushland Park Claudia Glass www.sunshinecoastbushwalks.com

A

s the cooler weather approaches, Eumundi Green is pleased to assist with the discovery of what our beautiful area has to offer in regard to nature walks. There is a bounty of shorter bushwalks to enjoy. These walks are great for parents who would like to share the wonders of nature and our beautiful environment with their young children. Many of these walks include picnic areas, playgrounds and BBQ facilities, great for a family day out. Hidden away in Nambour is Koala Bushland Park (off Bade Street, Nambour). This is a pleasant walk through gum forest, with some steeper sections. There is a picnic area, toilet facilities and playground along the way. The walk is 2km return. Access in a car is by turning into Bade Street from Howard Street Nambour. Park on the side of the road after the first house, near the rock wall.

There is a small sign just at the start of the trail. 1. Enter the trail next to the Koala Bushland Park sign. Follow this trail up a steep hill ignoring the track off to the right opposite the picnic table. 2. This brings you out at a playground and picnic area. Walk through the picnic area past the toilets and back into the forest. 3. Take the first track off to the right. At the “No Through Track, Private Property” sign, the trail turns right and continues along until reaching an intersection. 4. Turn left and walk down, returning to the car.

Help to keep Noosa River healthy

N

oosa and District Landcare is calling the local community to get involved in their catchmentwide study of Lake Cootharaba, Kin Kin Creek and Upper Noosa River. Water quality monitoring and sediment sampling will be some of the tasks that are part of the Cootharaba Community Erosion Awareness Project and community members will be provided with training, resources and support. Throughout the duration of the project, consultation and information workshops are being held for public and open debate over significant local issues. A key outcome of this project will be a deeper understanding

of Lake Cootharaba’s role in keeping the Noosa River healthy, as it is acting as a deposition ground for sediment and nutrient accumulation from the surrounding areas. Information attained will be analysed using the latest technology by a University of the Sunshine Coast honours student at the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology in Sydney and will be used to date lake sediments to within 3–5 years and identify significant erosion processes in the catchment. To get involved, keep abreast of dates of community meetings or donate your time, please visit www.noosalandcare.org.

E

aster bunnies and chocolate are now a distant memory but it is timely to consider our native bilbies, a ready-made replacement for traditional bunnies: just as cute, big ears, soft and cuddly. Australia had two bilbies, one of those, the lesser bilby, is already extinct. The Greater Bilby (Macrotis lagotis) was once found over the greater part of the arid grasslands of Australia but is now endangered, with its range reduced to the Tanami desert and surrounds with a small population in Queensland’s Channel Country. Introduced foxes and cats are largely responsible. Bilbies, the largest members of the bandicoot family, are omnivorous and dig up grubs and arthropods as well as seeds and tubers. They are strictly nocturnal and dig burrows up to 2 metres deep. As marsupials they have pouches but these face backwards so they don’t fill up with sand or soil when digging. They breed all year round and usually have two young in a litter. Bilbies’ large ears give them excellent hearing as well as assisting with cooling. When they first emerge from their hollows, the ears are actually floppy (see photo) and only become raised when the animal becomes active (see photo of Dawn Fraser with

Lester bilby making a presentation at Good Shepherd Lutheran College for students to learn more about the plight of the bilby). The bilby is the national symbol for endangered species and the Queensland Parks & Wildlife Dept. runs a breeding and release program at Charleville. We were allowed into the room where the pregnant females are housed in communal boxes. We’ve handled many native animals (and rabbits) and found the blue-grey fur of bilbies by far the softest of all. When weaned, the next step for the captive-bred bilbies is to a 25 square kilometre safe area near Cunnamulla, before release into the wild. The upkeep of this area with its 20km of cat- and fox-proof fence was partly funded by an Easter Bilby campaign.

few weeks back I mentioned how pleased I was with the iPad and I’m happy to say the sentiment remains the same. They are very versatile and for those who haven’t had a good look at one, or not had a chance to look at the kinds of “apps” (programs or software) you can purchase or download free, I’m going to give you just a sniff of the kinds of stuff that is available that I’m using. Flipboard – turns Twitter, Facebook, news websites and a range of other online media (which you select) into a magazine-style format for simple and beautiful browsing with your finger – the only place I go for news now. Evernote – type notes, sync with your PC, phone and the web, email notes and web pages direct to Evernote. Sounds simple but its very powerful and the app I use most.

Air video – stream all your videos stored on your PC to your iPad via WIFI in your home. Combined with the HDMI connector, plug it into your TV and you have full access to your video library on your PC. Supports video formats like DivX/ xVid which the iPad player doesn’t. FlyToMap GPS HD – a GPS mapping/tracking program which uses Google maps as well as downloadable terrain and marine maps. I’m using it to record GPS markers when fishing offshore, then using the waypoint feature to find my way back there again. Discover and Music Hunter – two apps that help you find music you might like based on other music. Very clever and intuitive, you can get lost for hours finding new music. So much more to come! Some more suggestions soon. If you have a problem or a question phone or drop an email.

International Museum Day The theme for International Museum Day Wednesday 18 May, 2011 is Museum and Memory. Museums preserve memories and tell stories. They have objects that are fundamental to the memory of the communities we live in. These objects are the expression of our natural and cultural heritage. From Wednesday 18 May we ask you to visit Discover Eumundi and view our many displays relating to Eumundi’s heritage. Shipping tags will be available for you to write down any memories our collection brings up. These will be attached to a small rotary clothes line for all visitors to the centre to see and read and will then become part of Discover Eumundi.

The great bridge controversy Fran Maguire

From the beach to the pool

W

hich came first? It has been an ongoing controversy since the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the smaller but similar Tyne Bridge in the UK were opened in the early years of the last century. Many bridges cross the River Tyne in the north-east of England and the most well-known are those that span Tyneside where the river narrows between the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the town of Gateshead. The oldest of these is the High Level Bridge opened in 1849 to link the south of England with Newcastle and Scotland by train. Needing to span the Tyne gorge, it towers above the other bridges at 112 feet (34 metres) and still carries the East Coast main line between England and Scotland. Nestling in its shadow is the quaint Swing Bridge, opened in June 1876 to the traffic of the time and providing a boost to local trade. It replaced the earlier fixed George Bridge and allowed large vessels to move upriver. It is still an important road crossing but with the movement of trade to lower down the Tyne, these days it rarely “swings”. The newest addition to the Tyneside bridges is the tilting Gateshead Millennium Bridge for pedestrians and cyclists that links the regenerated waterfronts of

Newcastle and Gateshead. Opened to the public in September 2001, the bridge had is first hydraulic “tilt” in June that year, and is now part of the cultural centre of Gateshead quayside. While there is no opera house, Tyneside now has an iconic building on that quayside in The Sage Gateshead music centre, designed by Fosters and Partners, and sometimes likened to a slug. The most famous of the Tyneside crossings, the Tyne Bridge, a smaller version of our famous Sydney bridge and a subject of the controversy, was opened in 1928 by King George V and was once on the route of the A1, Great North Road, linking the south of England with Scotland. The Sydney Harbour Bridge was opened later, in 1934, so the Tyne Bridge did indeed “come first”. However, records show that the tender and contract for Sydney Harbour Bridge were submitted in March 1924 and that its design was put forward before that date. The tender and contract for the Tyne Bridge were not submitted until December 1924 and some records claim that its designers, Mott, Hay and Anderson, “based it on the Sydney Harbour Bridge”. So, dear readers, which bridge came first?

The young lifesavers from Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club visit the pool annually for their 24-hour swim-a-thon fundraiser for the club’s cadets. Rod said the pool staff look after them very well and they hoped to make $2000 from the swim-a-thon and a collection stall at the Original Eumundi Markets.

Working together with Discover Eumundi, the marketing committee will promote all Eumundi businesses and the diverse range of experiences visitors to Eumundi can enjoy. We aim to encourage people to spend more, experience more and return to the town to continue the experience. As well as promoting Eumundi as a diverse and cultural destination, we will continue building our visitor database asking people to leave their card or details and enter the draw for an accommodation package, kindly donated by Musavale Lodge. We’d like to encourage Eumundi business owners and the Eumundi community to visit the information stand during the weekend to see first hand Experience Eumundi in action. Experience Eumundi proudly sponsor Show and Shine in the Canecutters Forecourt on Sunday 15 May.

Locals Home and Abroad Eumundi Green around the world Doug and Debra Palmen, Continuum Antiques

W

e have been on our first buying trip to the UK and France for this year, and we had lot of fun with our buying going really well. We took a photo of Doug taking a break in the middle of the Newark Antiques Fair, which with 4000 stands is the biggest antiques fair in the world and full of interesting things. The photo here is a week later and several hundred kilometres south at the Montsoreau Puce (flea market) which is on the Loire River in France. It’s meant to be a 7am

start at the Puce, but that actually means the stall holders turn up at 7am. Then there is catching up to be done, coffee to be had, the day’s baguette supplies to be bought, another cigarette to be smoked, arm-waving arguments that need to be adjudicated by everyone else, and then double-cheek kissing to make up. Then they start to think about setting up their stalls. By 9am most stall holders have their act together, but by the time we left at 11am some were still putting their things out. Running markets

in France is a far more relaxed and casual affair than in Eumundi. Lucky Doug had Eumundi Green to keep him occupied while he waited for the Puce to start. We now have 3 tonnes of new stock from England, France and Belgium that will arrive over the next month. For the moment we have brought back a great deal of beautiful and unique English, French, Italian, American and Scandinavian vintage jewellery. The stock is moving fast so we’re putting a new piece out every day.
