Council plans to enforce parking restrictions every day
T
he Sunshine Coast Regional Council is keen to work with the Eumundi community organisations and market operators to improve the availability of parking on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Important aims are to generate more traffic flow and to educate drivers not to infringe parking regulations so that their day in Eumundi remains sweet rather than a bitter pill on returning to their car after taking in the full gamut of experiences on offer in Eumundi on market days only to find a parking ticket. Recently the chairs of several community organisations and a representative of the owners of one of the markets met with Cr Paul Tatton and council staff to consider a series of measures that might be introduced to improve the traffic flow and to educate drivers not to infringe parking regulations. These included better signage, increased use of areas on the periphery of Eumundi for all day parkers and leaflets at stalls and shops in prominent positions advising parking restrictions to encourage visitors to comply with parking restrictions. Another proposal under consideration is to designate Eumundi to be a three hour area parking limit except for Cook St where off street parking is not

available to some residents, removing 30 minute areas and maintaining existing 10 minute zones, three parking areas outside the Post Office, loading zones and disabled areas. There are pros and cons with this and the Chamber is keen to better understand the views of residents and businesses on this matter. It would mean that every entrance to Eumundi would carry major signs announcing that the town has a three hour area parking limit. If this designation is applied, it is likely to be seven days a week. As from Tuesday 14 June, council parking officers plan to monitor parking restrictions in Eumundi on all days of the week. In the recent past, the officers
have visited only on Wednesdays and Saturdays. This change has been prompted to ensure turnover of available parking to make the most of the commercial opportunities for businesses in Memorial Dr from the growing number of visitors on nonmarket days. Eumundi Chamber of Commerce president Barrie Adams said we need to do everything we can to welcome visitors and being able to find a convenient parking space is part of that. “It is not appropriate that employees park all day in front of a neighbouring business, it’s directly bad for business and not helpful for community relations,” Barrie said. continued on page 7

e’ll always have a challenge balancing the constraints of size and geography of Eumundi and our lifestyle preferences which include welcoming thousands of visitors each week, mostly who arrive of necessity or preference in cars to experience the markets and increasingly the full range of experiences we have to offer visitors. It makes sense to look for clever measures to ameliorate the challenges. It’s important to appreciate the diversity of views and ideas and Eumundi Green is glad to give a hand with capturing that. y street, Omega Lane, is a “no through” lane, running off Eumundi Range Road. It’s opposite the Eumundi Vet Clinic. We can walk our horses down to the vet, because he’s so close. Our property is part of a former dairy farm. We have wonderful neighbours and we all pull together in times of need. In past years, our neighbours and our vet collected our horses and other animals when there was a fire at the back of our place. We came home from a horse show to find the fire moving down hill, so close to the house that we had one of our horse fences burnt. When we have heavy rain our creek flats and the bottom of Omega Lane goes under water. There have been some trying times with the huge amount of rain we’ve had, but our neighbours have always welcomed us to bring our horses to their place if the flood water was a threat. It’s also a bird lovers paradise here, with anything from king parrots to jabiru storks. We love our street and, no matter what, we will stay here forever.

Sunshine Coast Council plans to deliver a better road network with a 10-year $25 million capital works program, which will guide the additional sealing and replacement of gravel on existing gravel roads over the next decade. The Sunshine Coast’s 690 kilometres of gravel roads – many through the hinterland – provide vital links for commuters, and personal and business users. Community News Australia’s local Biggest Morning Teas Competition gets UGLY for pretty good cause
U
Question When our wonderful pool was opened, Council blacked out a small length of the double lines so that drivers approaching from the Tennis Club end could cross to enter the pool within the law. The blacking out has faded - please could you have it restored. Also from day one it always seemed odd to me that the entry to the pool as marked by arrows has drivers crossing to the right to park and then when leaving crossing in front of traffic entering to make an exit - seems back the front to me. Would you please provide some advice on this.
Attendees at the annual morning tea at Verrierdale Hall raised an impressive $1200 for the Queensland Cancer Council. Spokesperson Fay Wiggins said they were grateful to individuals and organisations who donated raffle prizes and food.
Rex Eggmolesse provided the entertainment at the well-attended morning tea hosted by Belli Community Hall Association. All had a wonderful time and raised $2433 for the Cancer Council.
Response Due to the fading out of the blackened out section of the small length of double lines, a request has been raised with Council to have it restored. These works should be carried out shortly. As the majority of drivers want to access a car park as close as possible to the front door of the facility, motorists entering the car park are given priority over those exiting. If we had line marked the car park so that motorists needed to drive around the car park in a clockwise direction they would have ignored this and driven the wrong way to get straight to the door. This would have created the potential for motorists exiting the car park to have a head-on collision with people performing this illegal movement.

ntil 16 June big-hearted Imperial Hotel bartender Rod Carroll will get into the fundraising spirit and battle it out to become the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland’s UGLY Bartender of the Year. UGLY stands for Understanding, Generous, Likeable You and is a fundraising competition run statewide in pubs, bars, sporting clubs and RSLs with proceeds benefiting patients and their families living with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders. Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland assistant regional community fundraiser for the Sunshine Coast Tunja Cottier said UGLY Bartender of the Year is a quirky and fun campaign that raises vital funds for a serious cause. Ms Cottier said she was grateful for the Imperial Hotel’s support and urged Eumundi locals and visitors to get behind Rod by sponsoring him at www. uglybartender.org.au, or by giving generously at the pub. The bartender who raises the most money will be crowned UGLY Bartender of the Year and awarded a trophy to display behind the bar. Regulars who supported their fundraising will not be forgotten with the winning pub awarded a celebration event to the value of $1500, and the second and third highest fundraisers will also win celebration events at their pubs worth $1000 and $750. Winners will be announced on Tuesday 21 June.

Council plans to enforce parking restrictions every day continued from page 1 “It’s a four minute walk at most on a non-market day to park in one of the car parks and stroll to work. “I appeal to business owners and staff to consider the contribution they can make by this simple change of behaviour. The new approach should have a positive impact on the local economy in these testing times.“ Barrie went on to say that market days are different and need a different approach: “The challenge here, for a village fortunate to have the most popular tourist attraction on the Sunshine Coast, is to make conditions for visitors as favourable as possible to entice them to return again and
again. We, as a community, have an obligation to help, no, to urge every visitor not to get a parking ticket by reminding and reminding them of the enforcement of restrictions.” Council statistics show that 2200 infringement notices were issued in the last year in Eumundi on Wednesdays and Saturdays with 15 per cent of these on cars with interstate number plates. The majority of those infringements were for over-staying parking times followed by infringements for parking on yellow lines. Of course consultation on these proposals is planned with residents and businesses.

e are still investigating a number of break and enters in the Maroochy River area during the past month, the latest occurring last week at a house on Ocean Vista Dr. On that occasion the offender/s gained entry to the house via a locked side door and removed a lady’s handbag containing money and identification. This is the seventh similar offence in the past two months and we are very keen to receive any information that may assist in locating the persons responsible.
On the traffic front we are still actively policing drink driving and speeding within our town on a daily basis. It is pleasing to note that the number of motorists committing these offences has decreased and this has resulted in our lowest monthly reported traffic accidents for several years. If anyone has any information regarding the above break and enter offences or any other crimes occurring in our town they are encouraged to phone the Eumundi Police Station on 5442 8222.

Your Say Intersection response Dear Marcia Cannon, Thank you for your observations regarding the process and outcome for the intersection at the “top of the town”. There are a few facts that you should be aware of that might help you have a better understanding of these matters. The funds for the intersection upgrade and other staged traffic modifications were committed to by Council in 2005 as part of an overall strategy to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow. Council’s design for the Memorial Drive intersection was a large roundabout that had several significant negative impacts on the pedestrian environment. A majority of those who participated in Council’s consultation meeting in early 2010, which was held to progress the project, agreed that the design was not suitable. After a number of modifications by Council, a small working group sponsored by the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce was nominated to continue detailed discussion with council officers. Council’s input to the resolution of the pick-up and drop area outside the school (according to Council) is limited by State Government responsibility and funding and funds for upgrades of council intersections are separate and not interchangeable. Each step of the development of the Memorial Drive intersection design has been published in Eumundi Green with public input sought, and the working group has reported periodically to the EHA general meetings. Individually each member of the working group has donated between 50 and 100 hours of their own time. While it is really useful for you to enlighten us with your considered opinion, the forum for this advice was the extensive consultation period that occurred over the last three years. While involvement is entirely optional, if you “knew” something, it was your responsibility to bring it to the attention of the Chamber of Commerce, the town’s representative in this matter. Andrew Hillhouse Eerwah Vale Councillor congratulates I wholeheartedly congratulate Central Queensland University on its recent announcement to expand the Noosa campus facilities and potentially double student numbers over the next four years. communities and productive economies is accessed by locally available education and training opportunities. I am also delighted at the appointment of the facility’s first full-time Head of Campus, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean Professor Kevin Tickle who will oversee its ambitious growth plans. The $2.5 million expansion is a welcome investment for the Noosa economy which will benefit from the fit-out construction, employment of more staff, increased range of available courses and locallytrained graduates. The Noosa campus already offers existing programs in education, nursing and music. Our regional community will benefit enormously from its expansion into tourism, law, business, arts, occupational health, speech pathology, social work and psychology. People who have a passion for learning will never cease to grow. And our community will benefit greatly from each person who takes up one of the new places on offer. Cr Debbie Blumel Chair, Regional Development Australia Sunshine Coast A body artist’s tale After competing last year at the Australian Body Art Carnivale in Eumundi, my desire to learn more about body art grew on a daily basis. Most of my nights are spent in front of the bathroom mirror painting my face or any other piece of skin making itself available: legs, arms, hands. If I’m lucky I’ll have a friend drop in for a late cuppa and with some gentle persuasion I may get them to sit still long enough to let me paint their back. This behaviour may appear quite unorthodox to some, but in my family, it’s quite a normal occurrence and nothing out of the ordinary. In fact it was one of my beautiful and talented sisters Rene McGovern who has supported me greatly in this particular field of arts. She spotted the advertisement for the Australian Body Art Carnivale in the Noosa News. We decided to jump in and give brush and sponge a go, so with our male models, $2 pots of paint and no knowledge of what body painting was all about we stepped into a world of rewarding contentment as well as excitement and inspiration. I had a BLAST! This year’s event held that same feeling of expectation and exhilaration. Even the events leading up to the carnivale were also a great adventure, such
as the day trip into Brisbane and surrounding areas with the Discover Eumundi crew, getting to paint our lovely model Simone Gardiner and have a photo shoot outside parliament house; painting Jaz Melville and Dylan Creswell for promotions along Hastings street and Mooloolaba. Eumundi and surrounding areas such as Cooroy and Tewantin have adopted me with no questions asked, a place where I feel I can belong. I just want to be an example to my two little sons of how you can be successful and prosperous doing what you love and are passionate enough about.
Nothing could possibly contain the excitement I’m feeling right now as I’ve been invited to teach at the body art awards in Melbourne next year. Painting people makes me happy. I am yet to meet a sad body paint artist and somehow I don’t think I will. Nina Megaloconomos, Tewantin

Has porn hijacked our sexuality?
I
t is puzzling to me that only when gravity has done its dastardly job on our bodies, so everything sags and superfluous frills appear where they are not wanted, that we feel comfortable about ourselves. For years, I have been saddened to observe the agonies suffered by lovely young people about their appearance, their image. In schools, “mufti” days provoke dreadful anxieties: “Will I look cool enough?” I also have puzzled as to why this seems to be more acute in recent times. I have worried about the way many of the young people I have met in my school (and more tragically, in the law office) have been duped into regarding sex as a loveless, mechanical substitute for conversation. How beautiful young girls seem willing to play the part of objects, and boys as brutes. Watching Gail Dines on the ABC’s program QandA this week
provided some answers. Author of the book Pornland, Professor Dines is in Australia to appear at the Sydney Writers Festival and promote her book. She is very critical of the way in which porn has filtered into our mainstream culture: in video images, on laptops and mobile phones. Have you ever actually listened to rap lyrics, or indeed many pop lyrics? Have you looked at advertising hoardings, leafed through magazines? It is true that soft, or even not-so-soft porn is an important tool in publicity, and as the ante is upped, we are increasingly desensitised. Gail Dines claims (sometimes shrilly) that this is not a “benign titillation” but that we are raising generations of boys on a cruel, violent porn and changing the way women and girls think about their sexuality, their bodies and their relationships. I am afraid she may be right.

Mid-week, classes participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime event when they listened to Feathers for Phoebe written by Rod Clement. Zoe, a Year 5 student, read the story as
the lower school classes watched a visual presentation on the big screen. The Prep classes participated in their sports day at the end of the week that included ball games, sprints, novelty races, long jump and high jump. Prep has spent the term learning about different means of transport with the emphasis on travelling safely. During Education Week they brought their bikes to school and showed their riding skills as well as completing their drivers licence including a reverse park and using a roundabout.

he markets’ creative talents were once again well represented at last month’s Body Art Carnivale, not least among the prize winners.
Kat Farrar – runner up Airbrush and People’s Choice and runner up Face Painting
Julie Gardner of The Silk Gallery, an established entrant and previous joint winner of the Wearable Art competition, applied her formidable fabric art and design skills to recycled materials to take the winner’s award.
Brian Tisdall – winner Pavement Art
Kat Farrar of Katz Tatz at the Eumundi Markets, a competitor since the first carnivale and a previous winner of the airbrush body art category, took advantage of a whole body canvas with her airbrush tattooing skills to take the runners up award in two categories this year.
Artist Brian Tisdall again delighted the crowds and impressed the judges with his magical 3D pavement art to take the winner’s award. Brian was instrumental in bringing pavement art to Eumundi and his creations amaze market visitors.
Travelling Scholarships Barack Obama's address to both Houses of the British Parliament on 26 May included "...The grandson of a Kenyan who served as a cook in the British Army stands before you today as President of the United States..." This is a most powerful statement of what is possible. Both Sophia Laryea and Keren Leiman were presented with a travelling scholarship of $400 by EHA at its most recent General Meeting to recognise their high achievement in modern dance and contemporary ballet respectively. Both will put this towards the next step in achieving their goal of an international career in dance. From Eumundi to the world stage is clearly within their grasp. Sophia Laryea is a very talented 16 year old Eumundi State School graduate who is realising her dream to be a dancer. She is the only Australian who has been accepted into the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre on Broadway, New York. Chosen through a world wide selection to attend their seven week Summer Intensive, Professional Division, Sophia will be studying their prestigious modern dance techniques. Doonan's own Keren Leiman has been chosen via word-wide audition to dance in the American Ballet Theatre School Summer Intensive in New York. At its conclusion, Sophia Keren will then head to The Netherlands to dance contemporary ballet with the Lareya Nederlands Dans Theater. heatre goers and the theatre fraternity were shocked and greatly saddened by the death of actor Alan Ball. Alan had entertained Coast audiences for the past thirty years. His first forays into theatre were with Noosa Arts in the beginning of the 80s and his first role was in South Pacific. Over the next fifteen years he appeared in comedies, dramas and musicals as a prominent actor-singer on the Noosa Arts stage. In 1994 he became a foundation member of The Independent Theatre and his first role with the new company was in the very first production at the School of Arts Hall Theatre in Eumundi. He played Sir Thomas Moore in a ground breaking production of A Man For All Seasons. Since then he has appeared in countless major full-length plays such as The Sunshine Boys, Death of a Salesman, Veronica’s Room and Deathtrap. Alan appeared in nearly all 15 Up Eumundi Road revues, dozens of one-act plays and got a special kick out of working with the Youth Theatre, appearing in pantomimes and Children’s Classics. His passing is a huge loss. The theatre will hold a tribute night in August. The Hans Christian Andersen youth theatre project will
commence with the beginning of the next school term on Monday 11 July. The Indee is looking to enroll four more young actors in the secondary school age group and three in the primary school bracket, to take part in the September school holiday Children’s Classics season. Hans Christian Andersen is a production based on some of his best loved stories, including The Little Match Girl, Thumbelina, The Ugly Duckling, The King’s New Clothes, The Little Mermaid and The Red Shoes. Children taking part will also be offered appearances in Cinderella in January. Call Carol for details on 5472 8200.

nto just its fifth week of operation the Eumundi Family Medical Centre is growing and receiving great positive feedback from our community. Practice manager Suzie Dempsey said the patient register has increased weekly and has grown to at least three times its opening numbers. Some patients have said it is “like going to the doctor years ago when they talked to you and not a computer”. Particular positive feedback has
been received about Dr Carlos’s thorough, holistic approach that considers all options, allowing patients to make informed decisions with the medical team about their health management. The centre is currently open Monday, Wednesday and Friday add for GP appointments and the team is confident that with continuing growth of patient numbers it will be open full-time within two months.
As well the common reasons to visit the doctor, did you know the Eumundi Family Medical Centre also provides the following services: Free health checks for 45-49 year olds and free annual checks for over 75s Comprehensive medical assessments Immunisations and advice Healthy kids checks Wellness checks for men and women Skin checks with a Dermatoscope Microsuction for ears – the latest technique Diabetes checks Asthma care

steoporosis is a condition in which the bones become fragile and brittle, leading to a higher risk of fractures than in normal bone. Osteoporosis occurs when bones lose minerals, such as calcium, more quickly than the body can replace them, leading to a loss of bone thickness (bone mass or density). As a result, bones become thinner and less dense, so that even a minor bump or accident can cause serious fractures. Every 5–6 minutes, someone is admitted to an Australian hospital with an osteoporotic fracture. This is expected to rise to every 3–4 minutes by the year 2021, as the population ages and the number of osteoporotic fractures increase.
One in two women and one in three men over 60 years will have an osteoporotic fracture in Australia. About 50 per cent of people with one fracture due to osteoporosis will have another. Women are at a greater risk of developing osteoporosis than men, mainly due to the rapid decline in oestrogen levels after menopause. However, certain risk factors such as a family history of osteoporosis, corticosteroid use, early menopause, reduced calcium intake and low levels of vitamin D can increase age related bone loss. You can take action to minimise your risk of developing osteoporosis and a first fracture by giving your body adequate calcium, vitamin D and doing some form of regular exercise.

T
he name Eumundi Green has a two-pronged meaning. On one hand the newspaper promotes an ethic of environmental care. On the other hand the “Eumundi Green” is a place where locals gather, talk, debate and participate in community life. This community spirit can be found in the intention amongst many locals to support local people and local businesses, and to consume
and promote local products and produce. This also goes for local businesses supporting each other and the community in Eumundi and district. Jon McMahon is our local butcher and is a third generation butcher extraordinaire! Jon has been in the business for thirty years, in Brisbane and Maleny before Eumundi. His philosophy on good meats and produce is
Duck with creamy butterbean puree Ingredients 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp chopped fresh sage 2 x 440g cans butter beans (drained) 5 tbsp sour cream Grated zest of one orange 6 duck breasts or marylands 4 finely chopped shallots 1 small wine glass port or sweet sherry Juice of 2 oranges 1/3 cup beef consommé Murray River salt flakes 3 tbsp orange jelly or orange marmalade Steamed green beans Method Preheat oven to 180C. Place duck breasts on an oven tray skin side up. Season well with Murray River salt flakes and bake for approximately 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and rest.
For the puree, whizz beans in processor with sour cream, chopped sage and orange zest. Set puree aside. For the sauce, cook shallots in oil for 2-3 minutes until soft. Add the port and cook until liquid has almost evaporated. Add orange juice, reduce by half, stir in consommé and cook for a further minute. Add orange jelly or marmalade, season with salt and pepper and cook, stirring for about 3 minutes until well reduced. Heat the BBQ or a large nonstick frying pan and, when hot, add the duck skin side down. Cook for 3-4 minutes until starting to crisp. Turn and cook for another 3-4 minutes until duck is cooked. Heat the puree gently then place some on each plate. Add duck and pour over the sauce. Serve with green beans.
simple: support local, only the best, always maintain standards. Jon’s healthy complexion comes from 4am starts and often 6pm finishes. As he is so busy during the day, he finds ways to support the community within the hours he is in the village. Jon tries to source locally wherever he can. When asked to select a local food product to feature here, amongst the many options Jon

Sit the meat skinside upwards in the tray and make slits into the lamb for the remaining garlic and rosemary. Add chunks of onion around the lamb. Cover with 2 layers of foil and fold the edges over to make a good seal. Place the tray on the top oven shelf and instantly turn the heat down to 160C. Leave to slow roast for 2½ to 3½ hours. Remove lamb with the garlic to a hot plate and serve with mint jelly or sauce or red currant jelly.

points to local organic poultry as supreme. Officially, the term “organic poultry” relates to birds that have freely grazed at their leisure on only organic feed. The breast meat tells it all – organic poultry is not dry or rubbery when you bite in but is juicy and pulls away in strings. Ducks in particular are a local specialty. The following duck recipe from Jon must be tried to be believed.
beat in eggs one at a time. Melt the chocolate in a bowl placed over a pot of boiling water and cool before adding to mixture. Add flour and stir until smooth. Add finely chopped or blended chillies. Bake in a greased tin on 160C for about 1½ hours or until cooked. The mixture will rise and develop a crust. For icing, melt 200ml chocolate, cool and add 200ml cream.

In the Spotlight Breathing new life into Topliss Tarts Caroline Arnett

indy Bonwick and partner Richard Marchant are a winning team, a small business success story in fact, due to their ability to re-create themselves and deliver quality products that people want. We look back 32 years to when the Eumundi Markets was just two weeks old. Lindy had decided to try her hand at cooking and baked some macadamia cookies to sell at her new stall along with some plants, herbs and produce grown on the farm at Cooloolabin. Lindy’s daughter Melane (now a qualified chef), and son Carl are also involved, brought up as “market kids” enjoying their colourful family life. As the markets became increasingly popular with tourists they realised that they needed to evolve into something else to reap the benefits. Being a vegetarian, Lindy saw an obvious gap in the market for delicious quality vegetarian food that was almost impossible to buy elsewhere. It was then they found a commercial kitchen for sale on a nearby property and Richard’s

numerous building skills were put to good use relocating it. More recently Lindy and Richard have been keen to expand their horizons so they began to look at various café sites. It wasn’t long before they stumbled upon Topliss Tarts for sale at the Old Railway Station within the markets and immediately saw it as a green light. “It was perfect,”
Eumundi & District Community Assn Inc
Lindy says enthusiastically. “I have the kitchen setup here at Cooloolabin, the passion for cooking good food that’s healthy and the passion for looking after people who are a bit different, namely gluten intolerant and vegetarians.” In their two months of operation, stall holders and customers have praised them
with very positive feedback. Lindy asserts, “I’m endeavouring to improve the recipes where possible and to use only fresh, quality ingredients from local stores and the markets.” With her son Carl doing a brilliant job of running the existing street side stall while the business is still in transition, there are no definite plans yet for its future. This is his time in rehab from a devastating accident that happened six months ago, when his hand was severed while working at his trade as a cabinetmaker. After 10 hours in surgery his hand was reattached and with regular physiotherapy his recovery is slow but increasingly positive. Lindy begins her day at 3.00am with her brain working overtime thinking of how she can improve things, her passion driving her thoughts. “I’m very determined,” she says proudly. “I love the people too. Every Saturday morning I drive down the hill to the markets in the dark and I feel the excitement… EVERY Saturday… I turn up with my smile on.”

Bits and Pieces
Did you know? Did you know this about blood? World Blood Donors Day is 14 June O negative is known as the universal blood type as it is the only one which can be given to all patients regardless of their blood type Australia needs 26,000 blood donations every week
Our partner Eumundi Chamber of Commerce
The majority of donated blood goes to people with cancer, and some to people who have suffered traumatic accidents or burns or who undergo surgery
The Eumundi Chamber of Commerce was formed in 1955 and is now in its 56th year of representing business in the town. It is a vital and most important organisation for Eumundi. There have been patches of the "thick" and the "thin," of great and of little activity during this extended period. The current Chamber is undergoing a transformation into a period of sustained vibrancy with strong and growing membership, very capable leadership, a strong support team and a planned innovative vision for the future. All this is occurring within highly competitive retail and tourism sectors, a very high dollar and against a backdrop of the toughest economic conditions since the Great Depression complicated by confidence-sapping discussion of new federal taxes. The Chamber now runs the Australian Body Art Carnivale which attracted 15,000 enthusiastic visitors and potential customers to Eumundi town and market businesses this year and which last year generated the equivalent of $500,000 plus in advertising Eumundi as a destination. Events are the life blood of tourism.
All blood components have a short shelf life, creating the need for regular blood donations More blood donors are needed in winter when colds and flu can prevent many people from giving blood

hen planning what to do, it is important to select the “greenest” option. Doing things locally is good because you cut down on fuel usage. Encourage local businesses and attractions that have made a commitment to reducing carbon emissions, supplying local fresh produce and who have energy efficiencies and offsets. When you are persuaded by a green approach, tell the business that is why you chose them. If you are forthright, then perhaps tell the competitors why they were overlooked. If you do choose to travel further, you can still apply the same basic selection principles Thursday 9 June 2011
and ensure too that the fair trade aspect is considered and that your tourist dollar builds wealth in communities. Many tourists now also decide that rather than bringing souvenirs home to remember the trip by, they do something in and for the community they visit, so their trip is remembered by clean water, some education, some medical supplies or something that benefits the places they have been. Australians have long been known for these random acts of kindness and in the coming years a reputation for lending a helping hand will go a long way to preparing for peace.

Environment and Outdoors Council progress with alternative transport
Leanne’s Green Thumb Winter colours
A
We’re fortunate to have colourful flowers through our winter, not least the gorgeous poinsettias flowering at present and providing splashes of cheerful colour. The flowers of Euphorbia pulcherrima (poinsettia) are in fact quite small, the colour being being provided by the single or double scarlet bracts. Through modern hybridisation techniques we are now able to select from a wide range of bract colours including cream, apricot, pink and lemon alongside traditional red. So as well as adding vibrancy to our winter gardens, poinsettias can be used to bring a range of colours into the house. To use poinsettias as cut flowers place stems in hot water immediately after cutting to clear the latex. Leave them standing in the water until it has cooled. Poinsettias have a rounded growth habit and need selective pruning to prevent their becoming become leggy and straggly. After flowering has finished they can be cut right back, and within a few weeks fresh new shoots will appear again. We have many different flowering poinsettias at the Garden Centre at present, so why not pop in and see us to pick up your own stunning bit of colour.
t a special budget meeting recently, Sunshine Coast Council endorsed a 10-year $59 million pathways and pedestrian facility capital works program focused on the construction of new and upgraded pathways and pedestrian facilities. In the 2011/12 financial year Council intends to spend in excess of $6.2 million on pathways, pedestrian facilities and construction of key local pathway

ne of the more inconspicuous plant species on our property is the Banana Bush. There is only one on our 4ha of bushland. It’s a straggly bush about 2m tall and we’ve walked past it almost daily without noticing it. But then, in spring it flowered for the first time in ten years and certainly caught our attention. The profuse white, five-petalled blossoms, about 25mm across, look like little fringed propellers not unlike Star Jasmine and are equally sweetly scented. Until a few years ago, the species was known by the botanical name of Ervatamia angustisepala and just when we had managed to memorise that, the plant was renamed Tabernaemontana pandacaqui. Calling it “Banana Bush” is much easier. In autumn, the Banana Bush bears small, paired, miniature banana-like seed capsules (fruits), bright orange-yellow when fully ripe, from which the plant gets its common name. The encased seeds are wrapped in a red tissuelike material. The green parts of the Banana Bush exude a milky sap when damaged. It is related to the
highly toxic Oleander, containing similar enzymes and alkaloids, and all parts of the plant must be regarded as seriously poisonous. The Banana Bush is often found on forest margins from mid-NSW into northern Queensland and the Pacific Islands. The name should not be confused with Bush Banana, Marsdenia australis, a vine yielding a banana-like bushtucker. Fortunately, the ranges of these plants do not overlap as the latter only grows in the more arid regions of Central Australia. Note: the plant on our place did not set fruit at all. The photograph is from a bush on a neighbour’s property.

umundi photo club members selected this photo by Ian Johnson for their May theme, “portrait of a stranger.” Ian said these two four year olds had just met for the first time and appeared to be sharing a “secret”. The two girls are cousins and the grandchildren of Ian and Robin, Ajuna Devine (left) and Izzy Wilson.
Ian took the image near the beach at Crescent Heads in January at 7.30pm with a Nikon D90, using an 18-105 lens, flash -0.7, aperture priority setting at F8, ISO 200. The Eumundi photo club meets on the first Tuesday of each month, 7pm in the Imperial Bistro. New members of all levels of interest and ability are very welcome.

A
new exhibition, Colours of the Carnivale, at Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre from Saturday 11 June will showcase the colour and creativity that is the Australian Body Art Carnivale. The 2011 Photographic Awards in both the photo print and digital categories will be announced and presented by Cr Paul Tatton on Saturday 11 June at 11am. Discover Eumundi manager Wendy Birrell says the exhibition will feature all the entries and winning images from this year’s Australian Body Art Carnivale photographic competition. “There’s no doubt that the event is a photographer’s dream, and it’s evident by the high calibre of entries in this year’s photographic competitions,” Wendy said. “We’ll put together a comprehensive album of prints as well as a digital display of images from the whole carnivale including images of wearable art, pavement art, car bonnet art and the masked gallery walk and street parade – from this year and past years. “Aside from the impressive photographs on display, there will also be examples of body paints and tools, along with some of the incredible wearable art garments and car bonnet art. “A number of images from this year’s and past Body Art

Colours of the Carnivale opens Saturday 11 June, and will be in the old police cells exhibition space at Discover Eumundi until Monday 8 August 2011.
egular long-time readers would be familiar with my occasional backup backup backup! reminders, and I think it’s time for another, based on the number of customers with lost data we’ve had recently. Remember this – if you have any data stored in only one place, such as your computer, external hard drive or flash drive, then you don’t have a backup. Many people come to us with an external hard drive they call their backup drive, but it’s the only thing they keep the data on – that’s not a backup. Backing up is simple. Work out what you want backed up (docs, pictures, music, emails, accounting software is a good start), buy a cheap little 500gb
hard drive and use one of the many free backup programs to automate your backup, or at least reduce it to a single click to start. Many hard drives come with backup software included. Of the freely downloadable stuff, I use Cobian Backup (Google it). It’s pretty simple to set up, can be scheduled to run automatically, and copies the files directly so you don’t need special software to recover the data, and can send you an email every time so you know all is ok. You can find a whole lot more at http://download.cnet. com/windows/backup-software/, just skip past the sponsored results. If you have a problem or a question phone or drop an email.

If you would like to join this walk on Thursday 23 June and discover more about Eumundi and its lovely old buildings please come to Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre just before 1pm. The walk will take about an hour and a half and end back at Discover Eumundi for afternoon tea. The walk is free but we would appreciate a gold coin donation and feedback on our new leaflet.

ow that Eumundi and Noosa are where we lay head on pillow each night, I look back on my various “homes”. Having been born in Budapest and spending my childhood there, then moving to Mexico and spending most of my adult life in San Francisco, it has always been a hard for me to answer the question, “Where is home?” It seems to be more complex than a geographical place. This all came to the fore when I found out that Julius and I were going to my birthplace in Hungary – I was ecstatic. Showing my family and childhood friends my little son is a very special opportunity. And it was. However, I did not find the place or people as I had it stored in my memory. Many things have changed since I was back there even just five years ago. When I was growing up there it was a communist country – never hard core, thanks to the western influence from bordering Austria. Life was comfortable for all people. But it is very different now. The economy has taken a 180 degree turn, and it has become a more capitalist minded place than most capitalist countries. People are measured by their wealth. The middle class does not exist, as people are either below the poverty line or shamefully rich. Some of the houses I visited flaunted outdoor swimming pools with palm trees around them (you’d have to travel at least 1000 miles south to see one in nature) and unmarked marble floors in garages. Social services are scarce. It is very sad and unfamiliar to the comfy, community-minded place I grew up in.
The saddest part was not to have my parents any more and therefore not to be able to introduce them to the offspring. The closest physical connection I ever came to it was in my cousin’s house. Her daughter (now over 30) pulled out a recognisable over-30-years-old, still intact, toy kitchen set from her closet, and asked me: “Do you remember that?” Of course I did. I was almost in tears seeing a most treasured Christmas gift from many years ago, and it was heartwarming to see Julius play with what my mum had bought for me so long ago. This was a moment of feeling home. Flying back to my new residence filled me with happiness. I’ve only lived in Australia for less than two years, but was happy to realise that I was coming home. This is home now, where we are raising our beautiful son Julius in a happy place, where people are smiling, the sun is shining, the ocean awaits and education and healthcare are wonderful and accessible to all. Home is where the heart is.

fter Eumundi State School purchased three table tennis tables for its new hall, sports teacher Gary Kiorgaard started lunchtime games. He soon noticed that Joseph (right) and Dom Benzie seemed to have a real natural talent at the game which encouraged him to ask Roger Wheller from Noosa Table Tennis Club along to the school to run coaching sessions with students. Gary said Roger coached his own daughter to be Queensland Under 18 Champion and had also
coached Gary’s son to a third place in the Queensland Under 16 Team event a number of years ago. “I particularly pointed out Joseph and Dom and he agreed that they had real potential,” Gary said. “We decided to enter them as a team in the Queensland Primary Schools Team Championships.” After a number of training sessions with Roger the brothers competed in the championships last month winning bronze medals for third place. Gary said what is particularly remarkable is that Dom is only in grade 4.

As a proud sponsor of the Show & Shine competition at this year's Body Art Carnivale, Experience Eumundi congratulates the winner Peter Davidson. The show of already painted vehicles of all sorts created much interest, particularly Rod Tickle's vehicle which won the people's choice award. Hundreds of visitors inspected our vibrant promotional tent during the Body Art Carnivale. Volunteers on the stand promoted local businesses and attractions and handed brochures to interested visitors. Luke Tavis of Noosaville won the duck draw of a night's accommodation generously donated by Joe and Chris Russell of Musavale Lodge B & B. Luke has just recently moved from South Australia chasing "the weather". It was great to welcome locals to the tent as well, all impressed by the vibrant professional Experience Eumundi look and great service. We are preparing to despatch our first e-newsletter as part of our Experience Eumundi marketing campaign to encourage people to spend more, experience more and return if not a local to the town very soon to continue the experience. If you would like your email added to the free subscription list to catch all the news please email editor@eumundigreen.com.au with the heading Experience Eumundi.
