Students with staff and parents wearing red for Day for Daniel on parade recently. The parade included a child safety presentation. Many students also wore a bandana that they had purchased to support CanTeen. This Australian organisation for young people living with cancer is a national support organisation for 12-24 year olds who are living with cancer, and is the only organisation of its kind in Australia. Bandanas are sold to families each year at the school.

Congratulations Eumundi State School has won a major state award in the Healthy Queensland Awards in the Healthy Schools category. The award and an accompanying grant were presented yesterday at the Speaker’s Green, Parliament House to principal Mick Connors with Cr Paul Tatton in attendance. Remembrance Day 11-11-11 Veterans and community members are invited to this year’s brief community remembrance service at the Amphitheatre stage area finishing with a minute’s silence at 11am. The service will include a tribute to the 33 Australians who have been killed while serving in Afghanistan: 32 with the Australian Defence Force and one with the British Armed Forces. This service will be preceded by a dedication of new WWII memorial benches donated by members of the community and two associations. This will start at 10.15am.

The Eumundi WWII memorial is one of this year's EHA projects in fulfilment of Object 4 of its constitution, ie to support "activities and projects that provide a public benefit to the community of the township of Eumundi and the surrounding district including activities and projects relating to community welfare, public education and charitable purposes of a cultural and historic nature".

An observance of silence was adopted on the first anniversary of armistice on 11 November 1919 by allied nations, and now honours all who have served and suffered in any military conflict or peacekeeping operation.

Australia Post managing director and CEO Ahmed Fahour says, “This stamp issue has a very significant time and date sequence this year,

where one minute’s silence is observed at 11am on 11.11.11 – a sequence which only occurs every 100 years.

It is fitting to have the Remembrance Day stamps in Australia given the observance of silence was originally proposed by Melbourne journalist and World War I veteran Edward George Honey in 1919.

The final vestige of Memorial Dr as a main road was removed last week with the grinding off of the double white lines down the centre of the road in the CBD precinct courtesy of the Sunshine Coast Council. Memorial Dr was under the control of the Main Roads Dept until the by-pass was built at which time Memorial Dr became a Council controlled street. This highly symbolic change now welcomes visitors to our high street to change direction to the other side of the street overcoming previous anxiety from expectation of punishment. Please take care when turning.

n the last issue I talked about the national average of outstanding debts being 55 days, 10 days more than a few years ago. It is a problem for all businesses that do not have adequate reserves.

Reserves are built up from undrawn profits from previous years but you can adopt some useful strategies to speed up the process: 1. Offer short term discount for early settlement, eg payment in fourteen days 3% payment in 21 days 2.5% payment in thirty days 1% (don’t forget payment by credit card often attracts similar levels of merchant fees).

2. Obtain up front deposits before releasing goods if appropriate.

3. Consider debtors finance. Get paid instantly 80% of the invoice with the remaining 20% less fees, when the customer pays the debt to the bank, most banks offer this service (but probably better to leave the detail for a further article).

4. Look into debtors insurance.

5. Follow up debtors immediately if they exceed the terms and conditions; get tough, it’s your profit you are protecting. Follow up by telephone first, then email, then official letter, then into debt collection. Keep notes on comments. Avoid mates rates unless there is a cash settlement.

6. Have a print out of the business’s debtors listing showing 30, 60, 90 days. The 90 days and over should not exceed 4% of total debtors. Look at this daily. Act upon it.

7. Know your customers well, know their circumstances, talk to them constantly, and alert them to yours.

8. Don’t fall into the trap of adding admin fees or interest charges to the accounts for non-payment. It is not good psychologically from a debtor’s point of view and often leads to legal argument.

9. If an account has reached its limit, stop the credit insist on COD or cease to sell to that customer. Be tough it’s is your profit you are protecting.

Always be proactive in collecting your debtors. It is the final act which completes the process of selling goods and services and enables you to bank the profit.

A lively bunch of women gathered at Chuckles Café for a cancer morning tea to raise funds for the McGrath Breast Care Nurses who support local families experiencing breast cancer. Donations from local businesses and stall holders, hosting by Chuckles’ Louise Cavendish and generous hearts on the day resulted in $650 being raised at the morning tea.

Noosa Biosphere Ltd Chair

irstly, congratulations to EDV for their initiative in working up an EDV model for potential biosphere boundary change. UNESCO has recently advised Noosa Biosphere Ltd (not Inc.) of the timetable and this will be included in the planned community briefings to be advised shortly.

For the record, the current council established the current biosphere structure based on a model recommended by the former Noosa Shire Council. This in turn was structured on the constitution for Tourism Noosa, which had its base in a community representative model. To ensure this model was representative of community, the former council recommended bringing in the five community sector consultation boards offering residents with interests in environment, social, economics, tourism and culture continuity of representation in biosphere endeavours. A sixth board was added being education R&D. The current council took all recommendations without change and set up the operating structure under QLD Treasury rules.

by UNESCO. There is regularly mischief about appointments or decisions being at the direction of Council. Simply untrue! Council has a regulatory obligation to endorse directors as any other principal would. Office bearers are decided by the board and approved by Council for good governance.

UNESCO regards the achievements of Noosa Biosphere Reserve over the past three years to equal work by others that took up to seven years. Our projects have been recognised globally (list on website) by UNESCO and we are currently under consideration as one of the top 40 biospheres (of 570) to be used as celebratory examples for the 40th Anniversary of Man and Biosphere in November 2011. Eleven countries have sent representatives to see our model in action.

Our “learning laboratory” model is also regarded as leading a new wave of biospheres, and visitation by international students to study the Noosa Biosphere brought $500k into our economy last year and is on target to double that next year.

Books for Kids - Sunshine Coast libraries in partnership with the Salvation Army are running their annual Christmas book drive to give the gift of reading to children across the region from 1 November to 13 December. The book drive has been operating for 12 years and has provided over 4000 kids with a new book for Christmas. Donated new books are left at a Sunshine Coast

library to enable the Salvation Army to distribute these to disadvantaged families across the region in time for Santa’s yearly visit.

Question Four months to go for you as Councillor – what are your priorities for this period?

Response My goals in these last few months are very much about setting strong foundations for the future around some key areas.

I have three key priorities. The first is to ensure there is a strong foundation for the incoming divisional councillor to take the needs of Division 9 forward in the new term of council. The second is to ensure the regional Light Rail Project has developed a momentum in the broad community which will give us our best chance of success in achieving it. The third is to set a challenging vision for Council's role in building a reputation as a Creative Community.

With regard to my divisional responsibilities, my focus is on leaving clear handover notes so that the transition is seamless in terms of residents’ experiences of the new council. I will also be ensuring that any needed capital works projects are flagged for the forthcoming 2012/13 budget which will be adopted by the new council.

With regard to the light rail project, I have the portfolio of Integrated Transport, so this is my regional responsibility. To date I have been working with my colleague James Birrell and meeting with a host of business and community organisations across the coast to seek their understanding and support for this essential public transport infrastructure. Council has resolved to establish a business and community Taskforce to develop the business case for the project, and we have now appointed a highly experienced project team to drive the project. I am confident I will be leaving this essential project in good hands.

With regard to Creative Communities, councillors are shortly to have a workshop with a highly experienced and challenging facilitator, and I hope she will set the benchmark high for us to realise our full potential as a creative community. For Eumundi in particular, given its strong brand as a cultural hub, this new initiative by Council will be particularly relevant.

Your Say Eumundi Cup I was lucky enough to be one of those who attended the recent Melbourne Cup luncheon and fundraiser held at Sunny Brae in the showgrounds. The fundraiser was for the Riding For Disabled.

I am sure they would be grateful for the huge effort put in by the organisers who had a fine lunch catered for, many fun activities to participate in and screens located for all to watch the big race. It all led to a very successful day.

This was my first visit to this facility. I wondered why it had taken me so long to discover what it had to offer! The catering facilities, location and ambience for such an event were so good. Maybe I need to be more vigilant in watching for activities held there or maybe there could be more activities...

Many thanks to all who put in so much effort. I hope those who attended got their money on No Dope “owned” by Eumundi Village Pharmacy, which showed its true staying ability to take out the Eumundi Cup! Ed Boyd, Verrierdale Gold at Gold Creek Rd Just answering a question from Orna Bennett recently in My Street.

Orna asked if there was ever gold in Gold Creek after which the road is named. The answer is no; the gold in the name refers to the specific species of gum tree that was once abundant here. When it rains and the tree trunk gets wet it goes a golden colour. It was a very popular hardwood cabinet timber with the cutters in the early days and consequently is almost nonexistent in the valley now. There are still a few but they’re rare.

There were, however, stories that old local historian Stan Tutt wrote about a bushranger sitting in wait on Eerwah and holding up the gold coach from Gympie as it made its way back to Brisbane along the section of Browns Creek Rd which joins Gold Creek Rd. A little local history there for you Orna.

pirit House Chef Katrina Ryan in conjunction with Slow Food Noosa visited Eumundi State School to promote the benefits and taste sensations of eating locally grown produce (usually straight from the garden) to the plate.

Both year seven classes contributed to the preparation and cooking of the food grown in the school gardens. They enjoyed

a menu that consisted of roasted pumpkin and potato with rosemary; chicken stir fry with turmeric, celery, chilli, onions, tomatoes, cabbage, silverbeet and viet mint; and salad of lettuce, fennel, parsley, dried dates, sunflower seeds and haloumi.

All of the produce bar four ingredients were grown in the school gardens.

Student learning is significantly enhanced through the use of Information and Communication Technologies in all classrooms. The school has a well equipped library which incorporates a computer lab, interactive whiteboards and digital technologies. A healthy lifestyle is encouraged through specialist physical education lessons, an active sports program and a healthy choices tuckshop menu.

elebration of this year’s Halloween got off to an early start with “an absolute scream” zombie walk in Caplick Way on Sunday 30 October. The next evening more than 120 kids and accompanying adults joined in the fun at 13 Cook St. On Caplick Way another 40 kids and families dressed up for “Trick or Treating”. One host said, “It was a great night, so good to see so many locals taking part in such a fun celebration!”

“Blended with olive oil, this is a potato dish kissed by the sun – once mastered you’ll be able to hypnotise chickens. Moist and delicious, cooked and shelled broad beans can be added in season,” – Max.

hef Max Porter of Food of No Fixed Address created a great treat for supporters of Eumundi Green’s Melbourne Cup lunch, who enjoyed a successful fundraising event for Riding for

the Disabled at Sunnybrae at Eumundi Showgrounds. For those who missed the feast, and those who would like to enjoy it again, Max has kindly shared some of his recipes with us.

Ingredients 6–8 Dutch Cream potatoes, scrubbed (Desiree, Pontiac or other waxy potatoes may be used) 100ml sherry, red wine or white wine vinegar 300ml virgin olive oil ½ bunch green shallots, finely sliced 1 bunch Italian or flat leaf parsley, chopped Seasoning Shown here served with Dutch carrots

Add chopped shallots and parsley.

Taste for seasoning and add more olive oil if needed.

The potatoes should be moist with the slight taste of vinegar.

Serve warm.

Max suggests, “The next day, make leftovers into little patty cakes. Bind with some beaten egg and potato flour, lightly flour them and pan fry. Serve with tomato pickle.”

Method Place the potatoes, skin on, in a saucepan, cover with water and add salt to taste.

Bring to the boil and simmer until you can put a knife easily through them. Drain, rest for 5 minutes.

Mash potatoes roughly with vinegar and olive oil, leaving skins on.

“Cooking, like anything that is worth doing, is a matter of little things done well!” – Max.

Buttermilk chicken Max says, “The secret to Southern fried chicken – buttermilk –will add the tenderness that makes this recipe memorable.”

Ingredients 1kg free-range chicken wings 600ml buttermilk 4 tblsp garlic powder 4 tblsp onion powder 2 tblsp sea salt 2 tblsp ground white pepper 2 cups plain flour 1 egg, beaten 200ml macadamia oil 2 tblsp butter Method The night before or the morning of the day you will be cooking the chicken, prepare it by removing the tips of the wings.

Cut each wing in half.

Mix the buttermilk with half the garlic and onion powders and salt and pepper, add the chicken wings and mix through.

Cover and place in the fridge to soak for 8 hours.

Drain the chicken and put aside to come to room temperature; reserve some of the buttermilk.

Preheat oven to 170C. Sieve the flour with the remaining spices and add a beaten egg to the buttermilk.

Dip the chicken pieces in the mix and dredge in the seasoned flour.

Max’s tip: “Mostly I add the seasoned flour to a paper bag and add half the chicken at a time and shake to coat, ‘shake and bake’”.

Set the chicken pieces aside.

Heat a heavy skillet and when hot add the oil and butter until it starts to sizzle.

Add the chicken pieces without overfilling the pan.

Cook until the chicken is golden brown, then turn and repeat.

Remove the pieces when golden all over, and repeat with remaining chicken.

Place on a wire rack on a tray and finish cooking in the oven for 10-15 minutes to remove excess oil and cook the chicken through.

Remove and rest for 5 minutes.

Serve.

Green, green beans of home Ingredients 500g crisp green beans, topped ½ cup crumbled macadamia nuts, lightly toasted 2 tblsp honey 2 tblsp Dijon mustard 3 tblsp lemon juice 3 tblsp white wine vinegar 150ml macadamia oil Fresh thyme leaves Seasoning

Method Bring lightly salted water to the boil in a saucepan, add beans and cook until tender.

Refresh in iced water. Meanwhile make the dressing with the honey, mustard, lemon juice, vinegar and oil, and put in a large bowl.

Drain the beans. For better presentation, pull the beans apart.

Toss beans through the dressing and serve.

elbourne Cup festivities were buoyant but with a bit more caution for betting than last year reported. Pero and Karen Nasteski hosted a party at their home in Verrierdale complete with a “replica� of The Bird Cage from Melbourne.

A large crowd gathered at picturesque Sunny Brae at the Showgrounds for the luncheon Eumundi Green hosted as a fund raiser for the Sunshine Coast Riding for Disabled. Over $2700 was raised by sponsorship, meal tickets, calcutta, raffles and donations.

T

wo weeks to the opening of Up Eumundi Road and Here Comes Kev Again. The cast has been beavering away for the past month and they’re now at the honing their skills stage.

Bookings have been coming in really well and as to what tables are left, is a day-to-day thing; so the way to go is to call the theatre, ask and reserve.

To have a show that’s lasted and grown for 16 years is a major achievement, due in no small way to its reputation as a top fun evening. And frankly what’s not to like? You get two hours of virtually non-stop laughter, an excellent buffet-style dinner, a moderately priced bar and the dinner and show price is still only $38 a head. Get a group of eight or more together and it will reduce by $2 a ticket.

Dinner shows are at 6.30 for 7pm on Friday and Saturday 25 and 26 November, and Thursday,

Friday and Saturday 1, 2 and 3 December. There are also two non-dining matinees, 2pm Sunday 27 November and Sunday 4 December. Tickets are $18.

At these prices it proves our point: the bills might be going up but you can still afford to laugh.

Next year’s shows are pretty much in place, just a tad of juggling and there’s heaps of information on our all-new, alldancing, all-singing, website, www.eumundilivetheatre.com.

With the recent visit of Her Majesty the Queen and the revival of the ongoing (albeit minor) push for a republic, our production scheduled for next March should touch a few nerves. Titled Happy Birthday Mr President, it’s a comedy that looks at the distrust between the media and the government and the manipulation of the public by both. It will be The Indee’s first major production for the year.

Young theatre makers go gothic

A

Sunshine Coast based theatre group has re-energised the traditional fairytale through creating what they call a gothic fairytale, just in time for Christmas. They’ve also tapped into the old music hall style of theatre known as vaudeville, shaping the show into 12 stand alone acts that in combination tell a gripping tale called Epiphany.

Working with experienced youth theatre directors Mary Eggleston and Sue Davis the young people who hail from Caloundra to Cooroy and rehearse in Eumundi CWA hall have created characters drawn from circus, vaudeville and freak shows. Writer/director Sue Davis has taken their content and cleverly shaped it to tell the tale of young Queenie D, an Alice in Wonderland type character who is drawn into a fantastical new world

that exists beyond the mirror.

The young people have also been exploring new media and old, creating digital puppets using iPad Apps as well as those based on more traditional forms.

Epiphany will be staged in the Black Box theatre at the Sunshine Coast Arts Incubator Project in Nambour with performances at 7pm on Friday 25 November and 2pm and 7pm on Saturday 26 November. The show includes some mature themes and is recommended for audiences 14 years and over. In the Spotlight Eumundi community leader takes Biosphere chair Verrierdale to be taken into the Noosa Biosphere:

CQUniversity Noosa senior lecturer Dr Sue Davis has been nominated as chair of the Noosa Biosphere Ltd governance board, succeeding inaugural chair Michael Donovan. She is excited about taking on this significant community role which she says involves close partnerships with industry, environment and community groups, Council, universities, United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and others.

Why did you take this voluntary role when you seem to have a very busy work and cultural life already?

You know what they say… want a job done, ask a busy person. I was on the cultural board for the biosphere from 2008-2010 and stepped back this year to work on some other projects. I stayed involved through working on the “Green Love” Pecha Kucha Night and doing children’s activities for Biosphere Day. When the opportunity arose to apply for a position on the governance board I thought this offered me a different way of working with and for the community. I believe this is a special part of the world that we live in and I am very interested in how we can look after it and share our learning through creative means. I have also been fortunate enough to meet many of the people involved in the biosphere over the past few years and enjoy feeling connected to the community and the place that I live in.

Tell us a bit more about this please.

The UNESCO biosphere program is all about sustainable human interaction in the environment, so I am keen to look at the human interaction aspects and the features of a healthy community living within a healthy environment.

The signs as you drive into Noosa already say it pretty well: “Noosa Biosphere - A celebration of community and environment”.

You know that Noosa Biosphere Reserve has written to community organisations in Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale inviting them to consider applying to UNESCO to form an extended boundary to the current Noosa Biosphere. The invitation seems to be falling on deaf ears in some quarters due to the timing in the year and the imminent Council elections. Any thoughts on this?

Tell us about your connection with Eumundi - what do you think about Eumundi’s arts reputation?

I live with my husband and son on six acres just outside Eumundi. We bought the block 10 years ago and have been gradually reforesting it.

It is a beautiful location and we just love living here. Eumundi has so much to offer with the markets, galleries, restaurants, Live at Joe’s and of course Berkelouw’s. There are many creative people who live around here and are drawn to this place so there’s a lot happening arts wise for a small town.

A

t a time when the aeroplane is in the news, I ask, how does an aeroplane actually fly? In 1939, German engineer Ernst Heinkel had the answer. The huge fans on the wings suck in cold air at the front. This air gets drawn into the chamber where it’s mixed with fuel and burnt to create hot gases. It’s these gases that drive the fan around and are then forced out of the back of the engine. This drives the aeroplane forward. However, most of the forward speed and thrust of the plane is made by the air that passes around the engine. Give it a try QANTAS – it really works.

Changing of the guard ECCO Ltd held its Annual General Meeting on Friday 21 October 2011 at the CWA Hall.

Each AGM is another milestone for ECCO as the effort for one year is completed and a new set of ideas coupled with a new set of challenges are faced.

The ECCO constitution requires that the two longest serving directors should step down.

However, they are allowed to offer themselves for reappointment. This was not necessary in this watershed year with the longest serving director Louis Formosa and chair Sam Scanlon not seeking to serve again. Sue Langdon had already stood aside when leaving Eumundi in mid-year.

So somewhat unusually the Board has new faces and new blood with the appointment of three new directors who have not served before. Ross Clarke joins Peter Wolfe as the EHA Inc nominees, Cherrie Orr joins Bob Loudon as the EDCA Inc nominees and Maree Thomson, following a period as Sue Langdon's alternate, joins new chair Barrie Adams as the nominees of the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce:

He also thanked all of the now significant (for Eumundi) number of part-time staff which ECCO employs in its businesses. Very special acknowledgement was made to stalwarts Joyce Turnbull and John Mc Callum for the drive, energy and vision which they had contributed to the work of ECCO in 2010-2011 particularly in establishing and nurturing perhaps ECCO's most significant project to date, the Eumundi Family Medical Centre.

E

very Aussie home needs a lemon tree. Those who have one know the value but how do you store those precious lemons between seasons? Get yourself a container and some dry sand, place lemons not touching and cover with a layer of sand. Then make another layer, covering with sand and so on and store in a dry place so they will last for months. Another way is to pick lemons leaving some of the stalk, rub glycerine on them and wrap individually in foil.

Why go to all that fuss?

Because lemons have so many functions in the kitchen, throughout the house and in beauty products! Slices of lemon make cold water or tea so refreshing over summer.

will remove the fish smell from washing up water after a fish meal and clean a kettle if boiled and left in overnight. Lemon juice will remove perspiration stains in woollens, revive patent leather and make milky cream easier to beat. The juice will reduce stains on kitchen benches if left over night, and added in equal parts to glycerine will soothe dishpan hands when rubbed into wet skin.

So if you don’t have one, think about following the great Aussie tradition and putting a lemon tree outside the back door, in the ground or in a pot.

Dwarf varieties are available for small gardens and balconies and by espaliering the branches you can have your tree and still retain the space for other things.

Frangipani rust

Frangipanis are just starting to leaf up now and with the rise in humidity it won’t be long before we see signs of rust appearing on the underside of the leaves.

With the new product Rust Rid, frangipani rust can be managed easily, both as a preventative and also a curative. As a preventative, mix 12ml Rust Rid to 10 litres of water in a watering can with a rosette on the nozzle and used as a soil drench around the root system of the tree. This treatment should be done prior to the appearance of any rust. Should there be any signs of rust this treatment also works as a curative and the same management program should be applied. Affected leaves can be removed, bagged and binned leaving all new growth clean and healthy with no signs of rust present.

Repeat application monthly for four months in total and a fifth if humidity is high. This will ensure keeping the unsightly rust at bay... Call in for your Rust Rid systematic fungicide.

Division 9 Councillor Vivien Griffin said ensuring the safety and welfare of local residents and the amenity of the area was Council’s top priority when reviewing the development application.

“Quarrying operations of the magnitude proposed for Yandina Creek presented significant lifestyle and logistical issues for surrounding residents, including heavy vehicle movements, noise,

dust, vibration and general safety,” she said.

“The information provided by the applicant was found to be insufficient when determining whether impacts resulting from the proposed quarry could be satisfactorily minimised so as not to impact negatively on the local area.”

“Council has received 5306 submissions from locals since this development was first lodged in 2009 and the overwhelming majority of these strongly objected to the proposed quarry,” she said.

Nature Notes and Outdoors Good snake, bad snake Kon Hepers

T

here really are no bad snakes – snakes just go about their business if left alone. Of course, you don’t want them in the house or near the kids.

Down in our summer creek we occasionally see a fairly dark, striped snake. We know it’s a harmless Keelback or Freshwater Snake, Tropidonophis mairii. The scientific name for the genus means “keeled snake” and refers to the noticeable raised rib or keel in the centre of the dorsal (back) scales. Unfortunately this species is another one of the snakes wrongly accused of being a deadly “Night Tiger” and killed on sight. (Night Tigers are actually Brown Tree snakes). Instead of killing these reptiles we should be encouraging them as they are the only Australian snake that can and does eat cane toads and survive. This is due to preadaptation: these snakes are comparatively recent arrivals in Australia and their ancestors had already evolved with and adapted to toads in Asia, unlike our other native snakes which were here much earlier and evolved in the absence of the introduced toads.

These snakes are common in our area and frequent dams, creeks and wetlands. They grow to close on a metre in length and are egg layers. Their main food items are small fish, frogs and toads, even tadpoles. As an interesting aside, tests show that for some reason the young females can swim faster than the males.

Keelbacks are in double

jeopardy; they are also commonly mistaken and killed, not only for the “Night Tiger” but also for the highly venomous Rough-scaled Snake, Tropidechis carinatus (meaning keeled snake with keels), which also has mid-ribbed scales and stripes. To tell them apart you have to have a close look at the scales on their ventral (belly) side – not recommended unless you are an expert snake handler.

Luckily these dangerous snakes are not so common and inhabit more remote wet sclerophyll and rainforest areas, generally at higher elevations. We’ve only seen them up on the Blackall Range. They also grow to about a metre in length and prey mostly on small mammals and frogs. This species is viviparous (produces live young). Rough-scales are the snakes that frighten us most. They are both diurnal and nocturnal and, unlike other dangerous snakes, they frequently climb up into shrubbery and we hate the thought of coming literally face to face with one, especially at night.

A friend up on Mount Nebo thought he saw a Keelback going into his house. He couldn’t find it but wasn’t worried. A month later he found it coiled up on the top shelf in his wardrobe. It was a Rough-scaled Snake! He was lucky.

In all cases: if not certain of the identity, treat the snake with great caution.

Animal traps set in Eumundi area Fran Maguire

R

esidents of the Eumundi Range Road area experienced a distressing incident last week when their family dog was caught in a council-set animal trap laid on a neighbour’s property next to a burnt cattle carcass.

During a sleepless night listening to the cries of a dog in distress, they thought their dog had been killed by wild dogs. The next morning they received a call from a council ranger who had released their dog from a trap and taken him to the night Emergency Veterinary Hospital at Chancellor Park following a call from the property owner.

The residents, who asked not to be named, said their dog was stressed and had a badly swollen paw and that it had been a terrible experience for both them and their pet. They added that they know dogs should stay on their owners’ property but when animal carcasses are not buried it encourages domestic as well as wild dogs. They are in the process of reassessing their fencing and said they would hate for any other

family and pets to go through what they have.

The dog’s owners have contacted Council to enquire why they had not been advised of traps on their neighbour’s property.

A council spokesperson told Eumundi Green that traps are laid when residents have complained about attacks on domestic animals and livestock on a regular basis.

Council had received complaints from a resident in the area that several of their animals had been killed by wild dogs. A council officer recently monitored activities at a site in the area for several days as part of an extensive risk assessment that is undertaken at each site of complaint, following which traps are laid if considered necessary. The spokesperson said all residents should be aware of the need to protect domestic animals and livestock with appropriate enclosures and fences where practical; to reduce the availability of food left in the open that might attract wild dogs and report to Council incidents with wild dogs and foxes.

I

t has been a really bad snake season this year, with worse to come. Dogs and cats are being bitten from the beaches to the rural townships. If you can get to help in time they can pull through…just as Eddy “the wonder dog” had done so many times in the past.

But sadly Eddy’s luck ran out this week after six bites over the last few years, she didn’t survive the seventh.

She passed away beside her mate of nearly seven years and

with fond farewells from other family members, Katie and Molly.

Eddy was a great mate, a great security system and a lot of fun.

She was loving and faithful till the last moment, sharing work and play with her family.

If Eddy could send a message we think she would say, “Keep your eyes out for snakes but also look out for symptoms of bites in your pets. Ask your vet as to what to watch for and best wishes to all our best mates this snake season.”

he Draft Sunshine Coast Council Reconciliation Action Plan 2011–2016 has been endorsed for community consultation until 16 November. The plan has a fiveyear implementation timeframe to provide actions that are aimed at enhancing relationships, enriching respect and creating opportunities in Council’s information, facilities, services and programs.

“Council developed the draft plan in consultation with traditional owners, elders, respected community members, government and the broader community, whilst adhering to the conditions set by Reconciliation Australia,” Cr Jenny McKay said.

Doonan youth’s ballet training pays off

T

im Terton was initially engaged as an understudy for the recent Queensland Ballet production of King Arthur and The Tales of Camelot. He was then given his own role in the cast and performed as Sir Percival, a Knight of the Round Table, for the entire Brisbane season.

It was Tim’s first professional performance and a wonderful achievement for the 18-year-old after just two years of full time ballet training.

Tim danced at Fierce Studios

in Noosa during his high school years, before switching to full time dance training in Caloundra 2010 and then joining the pre professional dance stream at Queensland Dance School of Excellence (QDSE) in Brisbane and also attending some Queensland Ballet Professional Year classes.

He will continue his training as a student of Queensland Ballet’s Professional Year program in 2012 and might be seen in further Queensland Ballet productions during that time.

his week we revisit a couple of useful tips in relation to printers. Everyone is always upset about the cost of the refills for their inkjet or laserjet toner, but there are ways to minimise this and reduce your refill rate. The first is not to buy the cheapest printer.

The cheap printers, even lasers, particularly ones under $100, make their cost back with the refills. An $80 laser printer may only have a toner size (yield) of 1500 pages and cost $120 per cartridge, whereas a $250 laser may have a 5000 page yield and cost $120 per cartridge. I’ve just priced some printers for a client and they paid $299 for a black

and white laser printer which may seem a lot, but the cartridge holds a whopping 8000 page yield and generic brand cartridges are $70! Before they even finish their first cartridge they are ahead financially of the person who paid $80 for their printer.

The second tip is to check with online no-name/generic cartridge suppliers and see the cost of new cartridges, or call your local ink/ toner refill shop to find out how much to refill cartridges for the printer you intend to purchase.

This way there are no nasty surprises. Have a think before you make your next printer purchase!
